3 theatre city par excellence NL / Theater zit vervlochten in het DNA van deze stad. Al jaren profileert Maastricht zich als euregionale toneelstad par excellence. Een verhevigd moment in de continue stroom van voorstellingen is het Maastricht Toneelstad Festival, dat in zijn vijfde editie aansluit bij het thema van de OISTAT conferentie, Theatre of the senses. Naast markante grote zaalvoorstellingen, waarin het scenografische aspect een cruciale rol speelt, zijn er verrassende locatieprojecten die scherp inzoomen op de thematiek. Tevens wens ik u attent te maken op twee bijzondere primeurs: de première van de overzichtstentoonstelling van het oeuvre van Jan Versweyveld, huisscenograaf van Toneelgroep Amsterdam, en de boekpresentatie over het maakproces van END. Een voorstelling van all-roundkunstenaar Kris Verdonck, die u kunt zien op 22 april. De jubileum editie van het Maastricht Toneelstad Festival is in zijn kwali tatieve en avontuurlijke verknoping van het motief en in zijn rijk palet aan producties, projecten en euregionale of landelijke premières, een must voor iedere theaterliefhebber. Theatre of the senses NL / Soms kom je in een ruimte die je betovert. Vroeger was dat gevoel vaak voorbehouden aan het bezoek van een kerk, een museum, een paleis, soms ook het theater. Tegenwoordig zijn er pretparken, virtuele ruimten en steeds meer de stad als theatrale ruimte. Theaterma kers trekken de schouwburg uit en gaan de leegstaande fabrieken of volle winkels in om het publiek te betoveren. In die context is niet langer alleen de taal maar zijn vooral ook de fysieke ruimte, beeld en geluid drager van de voorstelling. 4 OISTAT CONFERENTIE april maastricht NL / Van 19 t/m 23 april organiseert de Jekerstudio van de Toneelacademie Maastricht de internationale OISTAT conferentie Theatre of the Senses, Innovation and Excellence in Performance Design Today. OISTAT is dé wereldorganisatie die zich bezig houdt met expertisevergroting en uitwisseling op het vlak van scenografie, theatertechniek en theaterarchitectuur. De education-committee van OISTAT houdt haar 2-jaarlijkse wereldconferentie in Maastricht. De Toneelacademie treedt op als gastheer en organisator en besteed in het programma speciale aandacht aan recente ontwikkelingen in het Nederlandse en Vlaamse theater: het zogenaamde ervaringstheater (theatre of the senses). Dries Verhoeven en Roos van Geffen zijn onder andere twee in Maastricht opgeleide makers die met hun projecten nationaal en internationaal doorbreken en die beiden met hun voorstellingen te zien zijn tijdens de OISTAT conferentie. 6 JAN VERSWEYVELD (1958) NL / Scenograaf, lichtontwerper en fotograaf Jan Versweyveld volgde een grafische kunstopleiding. Hij behoort met Ivo van Hove tot de oprichters van de Vlaamse theatergroepen Akt/ Vertikaal en Toneelproducties De Tijd, in de 80er jaren opvallende theatergroepen in de lage landen. In 1990 werd Jan Versweyveld vaste scenograaf van het Zuidelijk Toneel in Eindhoven. Deze functie verruilde hij in 2001 voor hoofd scenografie en vormgeving van Toneelgroep Amsterdam. Sinds 2005 manifesteert hij zich ook als fotograaf. Jan Versweyveld ontwerpt toneelbeeld en belichting voor theaterproducties in Europa en de Verenigde Staten. Naast zijn samenwerking met Ivo van Hove en Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker werkte hij met tal van internationale regisseurs zoals Johan Simons en Pierre Audi. The branches huge. The rain is coming down harder and harder in here. Dries Verhoeven (1976, Oosterhout) NL / Studeerde theatervormgeving aan de Academie Beeldende Kunsten in Maastricht ( ). Met zijn onderscheidende vorm van installatie-theater wist hij zich in korte tijd te vestigen in Nederland en Europa. Vaak worden toeschouwers direct bij zijn voorstellingen betrokken. Ze kijken vanuit een installatie naar de buitenwereld of hebben persoonlijk contact met een performer. Zo beleven zij de werkelijkheid op een poëtische, verwarrende of indringende manier. Dries Verhoeven werd onderscheiden met diverse theaterprijzen, waaronder in 2009 de Young Directors Award op de Salzburger Festspiele. Zittend aan een tafeltje met een typemachine had zij bijzondere en vaak openhartige ontmoetingen. Die ontmoetingen vormen het uitgangspunt van Vangst, een voorstelling over de diepste menselijke drijfveren. Ook in Maastricht verzamelt zij de angsten en verlangens van het publiek, voorafgaand aan de voorstelling. Met haar minutieus gechoreografeerde bewegingstaal neemt Van Geffen de toeschouwer mee naar diepere lagen van het bewustzijn en het geheugen. Een ontroerende en poëtische ervaring, waar het persoonlijke universeel wordt. Artistiek leider Arie de Mol pakt het stuk 60 jaar later weer op, overtuigd van zijn actualiteit en zeggingskracht in het Nederland van nu. De bezetenen laat ons de keuzes en twijfels van een jonge generatie in chaotische tijden zien. Niet gericht op het zoeken naar gezamenlijke oplossingen danst iedereen weifelend op de puinhopen van wat ooit een wereldbeeld was. EN / De bezetenen (1953) is Albert Camus theatrical adaptation of Dostojewski s novel Demons, an apt portrait of the demise of the conscience of a group of young revolutionaries. 20 EEN A QUESTION ABOUT THE DESIGN OF FLOw MY TEARS VRAAG OMTRENT DE VORMGEVING VAN FLOW MY TEARS column NTGent / Toneelgroep Amsterdam ism Thalia Theater Hamburg Tartuffe NL / Wat nou als het decor van Flow My Tears een strak pop-podium zou zijn? Zou het dezelfde voorstelling zijn? Als je naast een beeldscherm met een bizonschedel een gigantische Nederlandse vlag hangt, boven de wand van een slechtgetekende blokhut, wat voegt dat dan toe? Kan een voorstelling bestaan zonder vormgeving? Moeten voorstelling en decor in elkaars verlengde liggen, mogen ze tegenkleuren? Ik kan me Flow My Tears niet voorstellen zonder zijn dubbelzinnig decor. De rommelige maar tevens strakke vormgeving zegt toch juist wat de voorstelling verzwijgt? Is het de droom waar de Ojibwe Indianen over spreken? Past deze wonderbaarlijke vormgeving bij dit wonderbaarlijke verhaal? Of moet ik mij dit niet afvragen maar genieten van het resultaat? EN / What if the decor of Flow My Tears would be a rock stage? Would it be the same show? If you put up a Dutch flag next to a TV screen displaying a buffalo skull, above the wall of a badly drawn log cabin, what does it mean? Can a performance exist without design? Do show and stage have to be aligned or are they allowed to oppose each other? I cannot imagine Flow My Tears without its ambiguous setting. The messy but sleek design exactly says what the performance conceals, doesn t it? Could it be the dream of which the Ojibwe Indians speak? Does this wonderful design fit this wonderful story? Een groteske echo van een tijd die gedomineerd wordt door een angst voor verandering en een hang naar het vertrouwde. Gotscheff, een van de meest vooraanstaande acteursregisseurs van Duitsland, stelde een topcast samen voor deze voorstelling. EN / Exactly 350 years ago, Molière created an uproar in Paris with Tartuffe, a piece with which he openly attacked the then prevailing Catholic fanaticism. In a production that holds the middle between a manic comedy and a pitchblack nightmare, director Dimiter Gotscheff resurrects the famous piece by Moliere. A grotesque echo of a time dominated by a fear of change and a hankering for the familiar. Gotscheff, one of the most prominent directors of Germany, assembled a top cast for this performance.
