5 JVSLG Introduction The Groningen esearch Institute for the Study of ulture (Instituut voor ultuurwetenschappelijk Onderzoek Groningen (IOG)) is a research institute embedded in the Faculty of rts of the University of Groningen. ll members of the institute are affiliated with this faculty and do research in the fields of history and theory of literature, film/tv, theatre, music, visual arts and architecture, as well as journalism, political, socio-economic, cultural and intellectual history and international relations. IOG participates in a number of esearch Schools, to wit the Graduate School Humanities (GSH), the Netherlands esearch School for Medieval Studies (NSMS), the Netherlands esearch School for conomic and Social History (NW osthumus Institute) and the Dutch National Graduate School in lassical Studies (OIKOS). Being recently (s of september 2010) appointed as the director of IOG, it is my pleasure to present the annual report. It summarizes the institute s activities, which, as in previous years, were focused upon three fields, namely, (i) strengthening internationalisation, (ii) institutionalising pivotal research activities, and (iii) extending external funds. s to the most important changes and events in 2010, IOG first of all wishes to thank rof. Dr. Herman Hoen who has lead the institute in his own solid manner over the past three years. In December 2010, still under the responsibility of rofessor Hoen, a (eer eviewing ommittee) presided by rof. dr...m. erts (adboud University Nijmegen) officially assessed the research quality of the IOG. Without any doubt the most significant result of this assessment was the recommendation of the to find a more efficient structure for the IOG-organization. For some years now IOG has been split up into three groups of researchers, organized more or less according to discipline. ach of these are in their turn subdivided into smaller, thematically organized units. These three umbrella programs/groups were assessed as well as the Institute as a whole according to the S (Standard valuation rotocol). The somewhat paradoxical conclusion was that whereas the research climate within the IOG as a whole can be considered dynamic and of a reasonably and almost acceptably high level (assessed with a 3 to 4 score on a scale of 5), the individual researchers proved to have hardly any identification with the three umbrella groups and its subgroups. Improving the organizational structure may result in an enhancement of international visibility especially of the more excellent research programs within the Institute and in a greater decisiveness in acquiring external funds for innovating projects. Due to the complex, vast and also very diffuse field of research within this part of the Faculty of rts we, however, foresee that such a reorganization might take quite an effort. In consultation with the IOG dvisory Board discussions about possible scenarios for reorganization were started. number of IOG staff members have been successful in external fund raising again this last year. I confine myself here to some examples. Together with other members of the Faculty dr..h.m. de Baets obtained funding from the oyal Netherlands cademy of rts and Sciences for twelve student assistants (called cademy ssistants), four of whom were allocated to De Baets s NWO project on the history of censorship. rof. dr..j. Korthals ltes, obtained a replacement grant for completing a book on thos and the negotiation of values (sept august 2010). rof. dr. M. Spek, collected from SNS-eaelfonds for designing a website and a course on ultuurlandschappen van Noord-Nederland (North Netherland cultured landscapes). Some of IOG s staff members were promoted into honored positions, e.g. rofessor dr. lasdair MacDonald, who was appointed Honorary rofessorial esearch Fellow at the University of Glasgow. Other staff members were laureled with prestigious prizes, e.g. Dr. S. arlevliet received a raemium-rasmianum as an award for her hd thesis of outstanding quality in the humanities and social sciences. Finally, our staff members orga- 3

6 JVSLG 2010 nized a large number of international and national conferences, workshops and symposiums; one of which I would like to highlight here, namely the conference organized by Dr. J. Herman on Globalisation and onflict in September For a list of all of the mentioned activities above, see the appendix at the end of this report. It is the intention of IOG to continue to working along the lines of the aforementioned initiatives. 15 JVSLG esearch rofile and esearch Groups esearch at IOG is characterised by its interdisciplinary nature, which means that the research groups are organised in such a way as to encourage links both synchronic and diachronic between them. esearch at IOG focuses on the study of cultural processes, their various manifestations and discussion of these subjects in urope, the regions of the astern Mediterranean Basin, the merican continent (read: Mexico, United States, and anada), and a recent development several sian countries. The research area covers the period from Babylonian civilisation (c B) to the present. The following periods may be distinguished: a) Hellenistic civilisation (3rd century B to the early-oman imperial period) and the history of the astern Mediterranean Basin, and of the period between the oman mpire and the transition from Late ntiquity to the arly Middle ges. b) The Middle ges, with the emphasis on the Late Middle ges/arly Modern Times ( ). c) The Fin de Siècle and the Belle Époque (c ), and linked to this, the socalled Long Nineteenth entury ( ). d) The period from the old War to the present, with the emphasis on the period from World War II to the present. esearchers at IOG represent not just many periods, but many disciplines as well: the history and theory of literature, film/tv, theatre, music, the visual arts and architecture, research into the artistic media and into the history and theory of artistic policy-making and organisation, journalism, and political, socio-economic, cultural and intellectual history, etc. esearch is organised into three multi-disciplinary research groups, all of which to varying degrees relate to the core theme of ultural hange. The three main research groups are olitics, Media and Nation-building, ultures and Identity and Society and the rts 4.1 olitics, Media and Nation-building s soon as society becomes organised and in particular hierarchical, power must be manifested publicly in order to maintain and legitimise itself. ll authority structures seeking to maintain their position must use arguments to convince the public of the natural and independent character of the socio-political, socio-economic and cultural constructs to which all belong. very social context, local, national or international, has its own politicoadministrative instruments and organisations, and distinguishes itself through its own political culture and political history. The central question for this research is how authority structures deal with the increasingly interwoven social trends towards globalisation on the one hand and the tendency among certain groups to emphasise a desire for individuality or autonomy on the other. It is not only the politico-administrative organisation that plays a role in political organisation and culture (including the delineation of different administrative responsibilities); socio-economic factors in particular help determine political behaviour (the political culture ). The research focuses on political culture and its history in the abovementioned areas (local, national and international). The notion of political culture embraces the two following domains of historical research: what definitions have been given in the course of time to the domain of the political ( das olitische ) and what linguistic, argumentative, organisational and rhetorical strategies have been adopted in order to define the domain of the political? Self-evidently, the media have importantly contributed to this, especially in more recent times. 13

The concept media is here to be interpreted in the broadest sense of the word as textual and visual material (both fictional and non-fictional), as ritual, ceremonial entries, courtly and popular festivals, demonstrations spontaneous or otherwise, as well as modern means of communication such as daily newspapers, radio, television and the Internet. In modern times they have become inseparable. very age has its own preferred media when it comes to processes of identity formation, regionalisation, living in multicultural societies, etc. esearch into representation by the various media is important to uncover not only the intentions of interested parties, but the prevailing norms, values and spheres of interest as well. In other words, media do not just have an instrumental function, they also have an illustrative and above all a guiding or even manipulative one, in the sense that they not only reflect reality but can also generate it.
