19 Definities Nanomateriaal: Minstens 50% van de (primaire) deeltjes waaruit het materiaal is opgebouwd heeft een grootte tussen 1 en 100 nanometer Deze nanodeeltjes hebben de neiging om hecht (aggregaten) of minder hecht (agglomeraten) samen te klonteren tot grotere eenheden Primair deeltje Agglomeraten Aggregaten Geagglomereerde aggregaten 19

20 EC aanbeveling voor definitie van Nanomaterialen Nanomaterial is defined as: a natural, incidental or manufactured material containing particles, in an unbound state or as an aggregate or as an agglomerate and where, for 50 % or more of the particles in the number size distribution, one or more external dimensions is in the size range 1 nm-100 nm. In specific cases and where warranted by concerns for the environment, health, safety or competitiveness the number size distribution threshold of 50 % may be replaced by a threshold between 1 and 50 %. 21 Cosmetica (EU Regulation 1223/2009) nanomaterial: an insoluble or biopersistant and intentionally manufactured material with one or more external dimensions, or an internal structure, on the scale from 1 to 100 nm A selection of ingredients should be evaluated by the SCCS 1, including nanomaterials (selection by DG SANCO 2 ) Nanoparticles may only be used when notified before placing on the market (at the EC registry, at least 6 months in advance) In case cosmetics products contain nanomaterials this should be indicated in the list of ingredients on the label Adaptation of definition if needed 1 Scientific Committee voor Consumer Safety 2 EU Directorate-General for Health and Consumers (Santé & Consommateurs) 21

22 Food labelling (EU Regulation 1169/2011) engineered nanomaterial : any intentionally produced material that has one or more dimensions of the order of 100 nm or less or that is composed of discrete functional parts, either internally or at the surface, many of which have one or more dimensions of the order of 100 nm or less, including structures, agglomerates or aggregates, which may have a size above the order of 100 nm but retain properties that are characteristic of the nanoscale - Clearly indicated in the list of ingredients, followed by (nano) Adaptation of definition if needed 22

23 Biocidal products (EU 528/2012) Wording of the EC Recommendation incorporated in new Regulation Nanomaterial is defined as: a natural, incidental or manufactured material containing particles, in an unbound state or as an aggregate or as an agglomerate and where, for 50 % or more of the particles in the number size distribution, one or more external dimensions is in the size range 1 nm-100 nm.
