2 M a r t h a J. H a v e m a n h e t f e n o m e e n v a n d e s c h a a l De werkgroep Qua Art- Qua Science heeft zich met deze uitgave laten inspireren door het landelijke project Nanopodium. De Commissie Maatschappelijke Dialoog Nanotechnologie, initiatiefnemer van Nanopodium, bood vier kunstenaars de gelegenheid om een aantal maanden met nanowetenschappers van gedachten te wisselen in hun laboratoria. Uit deze interactie zijn ideeën en concepten voortgekomen die uiteindelijk hebben geleid tot opmerkelijke projecten die u in het komende programma van Qua Art- Qua Science worden aangeboden. Bijzondere bijkomstigheid is dat dit project samen valt met de opening van het MESA+ NanoLab aan de Universiteit Twente. Het werd opnieuw duidelijk dat wetenschap en kunst zich dezelfde fundamentele vragen stellen maar andersoortige oplossingen zoeken. Hun verhouding tot de wereld vormt de verbindende overeenkomst. Juist in het grensgebied van die beide disciplines worden vragen over de omgang met complexiteit, de nieuwe ordening tussen natuur en cultuur, mens en technologie begrepen, verbeeld, voelbaar gemaakt en soms zelfs beantwoord. Wat is hiervan de betekenis? Is hier sprake van een oppervlakkige kennismaking tussen van oorsprong gescheiden professies of kunnen ze elkaar juist inspireren. In vorige programma s hebben wij u hopelijk al van deze inspiratie overtuigd. Echter, in de hier beschreven projecten is sprake van een gerichte samenwerking om mogelijke overeenkomstige doelen te bereiken. Vragen en antwoorden zijn bij elkaar gebracht in persoonlijke beschrijvingen van de vier betrokken kunstenaars. Het totale project is door Lucien Hanssen begeleid, hij heeft alle kunstenaars op de voet gevolgd en de processen in zijn artikel helder beschreven. Voor ons als werkgroep, was het belangrijk om dit alles inzichtelijk te maken door middel van deze uitgave. Merijn Bolink is de kunstenaar die bij MESA+ zijn project uitvoerde. Hij zal als eerste verslag doen van zijn onderzoek in een bijeenkomst van Qua Art - Qua Science. Het tweede kunstenaarsduo, Taconis Stolk en Sietske Sips (WLFR), komt eind januari met een presentatie en een tentoonstelling. Koert van Mensvoort zal eveneens zijn spraakmakende onderzoek (NOS Journaal 25 oktober 2010) naar de NANO Supermarkt presenteren. Merijn Bolink schept dingen die nog niet eerder bestonden, omdat hij ze uit een soort nieuwsgierigheid in het echt wil kunnen bekijken. Dat bekende hij mij in 2004 tijdens een tentoonstelling die plaats vond bij Art Twente. In zijn project Transcendente Nano Kandelaars -het fenomeen van de schaal- maakt hij uiteindelijk iets zichtbaar wat absoluut niet te zien is. Is dit een overstijging van zijn eigen kunnen of toont hij hiermee aan dat kunstenaars in staat zijn de wetenschap te verruimen? Dit heeft vorm gekregen in een aantal fascinerende en inspirerende trajecten van artistiek onderzoek, die hebben geleid tot de kunstwerken die in deze uitgave zijn beschreven en afgebeeld. Wij danken alle deelnemende kunstenaars, wetenschappers en schrijvers die dit in nauwe samenwerking met ons mogelijk hebben gemaakt. Martha J. 3 M a r t h a J. H a v e m a n T h e p h e n e m e n o n o f s c a l e For this issue the Qua Art-Qua Science working group found its inspiration in the national project of Nanopodium. The Committee for Social Dialogue and Nanotechnology, initiator of Nanopodium, gave four artists the opportunity to interact for a few months with nanoscientists in their laboratories. This has led to several ideas and concepts which, in turn, have resulted in some remarkable projects that will be presented to you in the coming Qua Art-Qua Science programme. A special incidental circumstance is that this project coincides with the opening of the MESA+NanoLab at Twente University. Once again it became clear that art and science ask the same fundamental questions, but search for different solutions. Their relation to untitled 2005, window, attaché case (Grand Piano made from both ). the world forms the linking similarity. It is in that grey area between the two disciplines that questions about dealing with complexity, the new order between nature and culture, man and technology are understood, visualised, made tangible and sometimes even answered. What is the significance of this? Is it just a matter of a superficial contact between two fundamentally different professions or are they actually able to inspire each other? In our previous programmes we have, hopefully, been able to convince you of this mutual inspiration. However, in the projects described here the aim is a specific collaboration in order to achieve possibly similar goals. Questions and answers have been compiled in personal descriptions by the four artists concerned. The whole project was headed by Lucien Hanssen who followed all the artists closely and gave a clear description of the processes in his article. It was important for us as a working group to provide an insight into all this by means of this publication. Merijn Bolink is the artist who carried out his project at MESA+. He will be the first to give a report of his research during a Qua Art-Qua Science meeting. At the end of January the second pair of artists, Taconis Stolk and Sietske Sips (WLFR), will give a presentation and show their work. Koert van Mensvoort will also be presenting his speech-making research (NOS news 25 okt.2010) into the NANO Supermarkt. Merijn Bolink creates things that have never existed before because he is curious to see them in real life. He admitted this to me in 2004 during an exhibition at Art Twente. In the end, in his project of Transcendental Nano Candlesticks - the phenomenon of scale he makes something visible that cannot possibly be seen. Does he transcend himself here or is he showing us that art can broaden the outlook of science? All this has been given shape in a number of fascinating and inspiring projects of artistic research which have resulted in the works of art described and shown in this issue. Vragen die niet alleen door wetenschappers en technologen kunnen worden beantwoord. Vanwege de impact die resultaten uit het nano-onderzoek gaan krijgen, is het belangrijk al in een vroeg stadium als samenleving hierover na te denken. Welke rol kan kunst hierbij vervullen? Kunst is in staat om sociale, culturele en morele dilemma s uit de taboesfeer te halen door deze op spraakmakende en zelfs confronterende wijze in beeld te brengen. Kunst kan een werkelijkheid weerspiegelen die nog maar pas werkelijkheid is geworden of nog moet worden. Kunst kan woorden vinden voor ervaringen waarvoor nog nauwelijks woorden bestaan. Artistiek onderzoek Het project De Kunst van Nanotechnologie maakt gebruik van de gezamenlijkheid van twee vormen van wereldbeschouwing: wetenschap en kunst. Deze complementariteit leidt tot een completer en rijker besef van mogelijke maatschappelijke betekenissen van innovaties uit het nano-onderzoek. De verbeelding welke voortkomt uit dit artistiek onderzoek bezit een zekere gelaagdheid die beter in staat is het dubbelfictieve karakter van een opkomende technologie uit te drukken. Veel nanotoepassingen zijn immers nog science fiction en hun maatschappelijke impact social fiction. Wetenschappers en kunstenaars werken vanuit een fundamentele nieuwsgierigheid naar het begrijpen van de wereld om ons heen. Een andere belangrijke eigenschap van beide, naast nieuwsgierigheid, is opmerkzaamheid. Zij merken dingen op die anderen niet zien of inzien. Vervolgens wordt dat inzicht gebruikt en uitgewerkt in een wetenschappelijk experiment of een concept voor een kunstwerk. In dit construeren van voorstellingsvormen trekken wetenschap en kunst meer gezamenlijk op dan dat zij uiteenlopen. Ze verschillen in hun referentiekaders, methoden en doelstellingen, maar in hun verhouding tot de wereld ligt de verbindende overeenkomst. Deze verbinding is de plaats waar vragen over een nieuwe ordening tussen natuur en technologie bij uitstek kunnen worden verbeeld, invoelbaar en verstaanbaar gemaakt. Gedurende enkele recente maanden hebben kunstenaars meegelopen in de nanolaboratoria van het Institute for Molecules and Materials in Nijmegen, het MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology in Enschede en het Center for Nano Materials in Eindhoven. Voor het artistiek onderzoek is het belangrijk dat het onderzoekslab openstaat voor de werkwijzen van een kunstenaar. Van de kunstenaar vraagt het een open houding naar het nano-onderzoek. In het project gaat het niet om de kunst in traditionele zin die zich richt op een beeldende output of het verbeelden van nanowetenschap en nanotechnologie in kunstzinnige impressies. Het uitgangs- Onder deze daken in het centrum van Sienna gaat een wereld schuil die we wellicht kunnen bedenken, maar nooit werkelijk zullen kennen. 5 L u c i e n H a n s s e n l o o k i n g a t t h e u n s e e a b l e Nanotechnology raises many new questions about human and world concepts, about societal relationships and about science itself. Questions that can not be answered by scientists and technologists alone. Because of the impact that nanoresearch results will have, it is important as society to think about this at an early stage. Which role can art play in this respect? Art is able to draw out social, cultural and moral dilemmas from a taboo sphere and visualize these in a controversial, even confronting manner. Art can depict a reality that has just become a reality or still has to. Art can find words to experiences for which words barely exist. Artistic research The project The Art of Nanotechnology uses the togetherness of two types of world views: sciences and arts. This complementarity leads to a fuller and richer understanding of possible societal meanings of innovations from nanoresearch. The imagination which comes from artistic research has a layered configuration that is more capable to express the double fictive nature of an emerging technology. Many nano applications are still science fiction and their societal impact social fiction. Scientists and artists work from a basic curiosity to understand the world around us. Another important feature of both, in addition to curiosity, is attentiveness. They see things that others can not see or understand. This insight can be used in developing a scientific experiment or a concept for an artwork. In this representation of realities, science and art are pulling more together than they diverge. They differ in their frames of reference, methods and objectives, but there is a similarity in how they connect to the world. Science searches for the general and the understandable, art searches for aesthetic quality and general empathy. This connection is an outstanding place where questions about a new order of nature and technology can be depicted, empathized and understood. For several recent months, artists have walked around the nano laboratories of the Institute for Molecules and Materials in Nijmegen, the MESA + Institute for Nanotechnology in Enschede and the Center for Nanomaterials in Eindhoven. For artistic research it is important that the research lab is open to the practice of an artist. For the artist it asks an open attitude toward the nanoresearch. The project is not about art in the traditional sense, focusing on a visual output or the representation of nanoscience and nanotechnology into artistic impressions. The starting point is a work of art, whether or not on a nano scale, sketchy or conceptual that makes societal implications of nano applications visible and negotiable. Looking At the beginning of the artistic research two questions raised. Can anything on nano scale be manipulated to make a sensory experience on a human scale possible? And what does looking at the nano scale mean, what are we looking at? It is a mediated and controlled observation. Therefore, we should beware of a uniform interpretation of the nano scale caused by imposed conventions. Familiar habits, we must dare to let go. To get through the heart of things on a nano scale we may even need an alternative observation system than our usual senses. An artist has no proof, like a scientist, but makes a statement through a work of art. A question here is whether a work of art without textual explanation can provide a good picture of the nano scale, the leap from meters to nanometers. Partly this will depend on the stage where the work is exhibited. In addition, text can also be part of the work itself, referring to conceptual art. 6 L u c i e n H a n s s e n punt is om een kunstwerk te maken, al of niet op nanoschaal, schetsmatig of conceptueel dat maatschappelijke gevolgen van nanotoepassingen zichtbaar en bespreekbaar maakt. Kijken Bij de start van artistiek onderzoek rezen er voor de kunstenaars twee vragen. Is er iets op nanoschaal te manipuleren dat een sensorische waarneming op een menselijke schaal mogelijk maakt? En wat is het kijken van kunstenaars naar de nanoschaal, waar kijken zij naar? Het is immers een gestuurde waarneming. Daarbij moeten we oppassen voor een eenduidige interpretatie van de nanoschaal door opgelegde conventies. Vertrouwde gewoontes moeten we durven los te laten. Misschien hebben we zelfs een ander waarnemingssysteem nodig dan onze gebruikelijke zintuigen om tot de kern van dingen op de nanoschaal door te kunnen dringen. Kunstenaars hebben geen bewijzen, zoals wetenschappers, maar zij doen uitspraken middels het werk. Een vraag hierbij is of een kunstwerk zonder tekstuele uitleg een goed beeld kan geven van de nanoschaal, van de sprong van meter naar nanometer. Deels zal dit afhangen van het podium waar het werk wordt geëxposeerd. Daarnaast kan tekst ook een onderdeel van het kunstwerk zelf zijn, refererend naar conceptuele kunst. Conceptuele kunst gaat over poëtisering van betekenis en niet over rationalisering van kunstbegrip. De esthetiek is hier niet weg, maar de esthetiek is complexer geworden: de esthetiek van concepten. Dergelijke ideeën kunnen ook als gids worden gebruikt. En kunnen worden vertaald naar die zaken en die dingen waarin de kunstenaars eigen kennis en expertise inbrengen. Artistiek onderzoek ontwikkelt iets dat er eerst niet was, waarna het een eigen leven mag leiden los van de artistiek onderzoeker. Een kunstwerk is pas geslaagd als het op eigen benen kan staan. Magnetische geurstoffen Nanowetenschappers manipuleren op een nanoschaal zodanig dat dit fundamentele consequenties heeft op een macroschaal, voor fysische, chemische of biologische eigenschappen van het nieuwe molecuul of het nieuwe materiaal. Taco Stolk en Sietske Sips hebben het concept opgepakt van het materiaal als kunstwerk. Een andere manier van ontwerptechnisch denken als het ware. Denken over eigenschappen van materialen en achterliggende principes, kan leiden tot een nieuwe esthetische ervaring die op macroschaal is waar te nemen. Beide kunstenaars zijn met hun Nijmeegse onderzoekspartners gaan zoeken naar combinaties van twee of meer verschillende eigenschappen van materie die gezamenlijk tot een nieuwe sensorische belevenis leiden. Het nieuwe moet op een menselijke schaal verbeeldingskracht krijgen, iets vreemds doen of een onverwachte sensatie geven - los van een direct praktisch nut. Tegelijkertijd daagden zij de nano-onderzoekers uit om eigen combinaties te bedenken. De kunstenaars willen vanuit hun artistiek onderzoek magnetische geurstoffen maken. Samen met de Nijmeegse nanowetenschappers en de juiste grondstoffen, kobaltoxide waaraan geurstoffen kunnen worden gekoppeld, is hier aan gewerkt. Magnetische geurstoffen als een nieuwe tastbare sensorische ervaring. Een stukje extended reality als het ware. Met de magnetische geurstoffen willen ze laten zien wat er kan met nanotechnologie op een menselijke schaal en tegelijkertijd ons iets gewaar laten worden dat haast tegen-intuïtief is. Als er voldoende nieuwe stof klaar is, willen ze in een ruimtelijke opstelling bezoekers iets van die nieuwe sensatie laten ondergaan. 7 L u c i e n H a n s s e n Conceptual art is about poetizing meaning and not about rationalizing art. Aesthetics is not gone, but has become complex: the aesthetics of concepts. Such ideas can also be used as a guide. They can be translated into those matters and those subjects where the artist s own knowledge and expertise come in. Artistic research develops something that was not there before, after which it may have a life of its own apart from the artistic researcher. Magnetic fragrances Nanoscientists manipulate on nano scale in such a way that it has fundamental consequences on macro scale in physical, chemical or biological properties of the new molecule or the new material. Taco Stolk and Sietske Sips have picked up the concept of material as a work of art. A new way of thinking in technical design, so to speak. Thinking about underlying principles and properties of materials, can lead to a new aesthetic experience that can be observed on a macro scale. These two artists with their research partners in Nijmegen, look for combinations of two or more different properties of matter which together can lead to a new sensory experience. The new experience must have imaginative power on a human scale, do something strange or give an unexpected sensation - apart from direct practical use. At the same time they challenged the nanoresearchers to invent their own combinations. Starting from their artistic research, both artists want to make magnetic fragrances. Together with the Nijmegen nanoscientists and the right elements, cobalt oxide to which fragrances can be linked, they worked to this. Magnetic fragrances as a new tangible sensory experience. A piece of extended reality so to speak. With the magnetic fragrance they want to show us what nanotechnology can perform on a human scale and at the same time let us experience something that is almost counter-intuitive. If enough of the new material is ready, they want to let visitors undergo something of this new sensation through a spatial installation. The artists qualify this experience as real surrealism. Nano candlestick Merijn Bolink in his work focuses on the physical reality of matter and the appearance of it. And how he as an artist can change this. For the practical implementation of his work in Enschede, he took two identical copper candlesticks. One candlestick he wants to make as large as possible. From the other he sawed a tiny slice and brought it into the setup of the nanoresearchers, allowing a layer of copper atoms in the image of a nano candlestick to precipitate on a wafer. The rest of the slice was put back into the candlestick. Individual atoms belong to his working field in Enschede. Is something still what it is if you make an exposure of it? Now that he got the chance to accomplish this on a nano scale, that question gets for him a new almost transcendent dimension. For the artist the remarkable fact exits that at this level the same central question arises as in his macro sculptures: the origin of the material. Also here, he is fascinated by the temporary state of an object and the endless journey of its building blocks - now individual copper atoms. To him it is important that the work he creates gets a visually recognizable form, which is coupled to the nano scale and serves as a vehicle for the viewer to enter into the deeper meaning of the work. Besides the nano candlestick, the second one has been cut into tiny pieces and send by letter at locations around the world which link on a geographical map in a candlestick form. He surrenders to the scale, but always in combination with the actual existence of atoms. A scale as widest as possible he realizes with the world candlestick, as smallest as possible with the nano candlestick. The phenemenon of scale - The art of Nanotechnology 9

8 L u c i e n H a n s s e n Nanokandelaar Merijn Bolink richt zich in zijn werk op de fysieke werkelijkheid van materie en de verschijningsvorm ervan. En in hoeverre hij die als kunstenaar kan veranderen. Voor de praktische uitvoering van zijn werk in Enschede bij Mesa+ is hij uitgegaan van twee identieke koperen kandelaars. De éne kandelaar wil hij zo groot mogelijk maken. Van de andere zaagde hij een plakje dat in de apparatuur van de Enschedese nano-onderzoekers is gebracht, waardoor een laagje koperatomen in de afbeelding van een nanokandelaar op een wafer kon neerslaan. De rest van het plakje is weer teruggebracht in de kandelaar. Individuele atomen behoren in Enschede tot zijn werkterrein. Is iets nog wat het is als je er een afbeelding van maakt? Nu hij de kans heeft gekregen dit ook op nanoschaal te verwezenlijken, heeft deze vraag voor hem een nieuwe, haast transcendente dimensie gekregen. Opmerkelijk gegeven hierbij voor de kunstenaar is dat op dit niveau dezelfde kwestie zich voor kan doen die in zijn macrosculpturen centraal staat: de oorsprong van het materiaal. Ook hier is hij gefascineerd door de tijdelijke toestand van een object en de eindeloze reis van de bouwstenen ervan nu afzonderlijke koperatomen. Voor hem is het belangrijk dat het werk dat hij maakt een visueel herkenbare vorm heeft, waaraan de nanoschaal is gekoppeld en als vehikel dient voor de beschouwer om tot de diepere betekenis van het werk te komen. Naast de nanokandelaar is er de tweede kandelaar die in heel kleine stukjes is gezaagd en per briefpost verspreid over de wereld naar locaties waarvan de verbindingen op een geografische kaart een wereldkandelaar vormen. Hij geeft zich over aan de schaal, maar telkens in combinatie met de werkelijke aanwezigheid van atomen. Een zo groot mogelijke schaal realiseert hij met de wereldkandelaar en een zo klein mogelijke met de nanokandelaar. Nano Supermarket Kunstenaar Koert van Mensvoort is in zijn gesprekken met de Eindhovense nanowetenschappers op zoek gegaan naar edgy nanoproducten. Dagelijkse producten die geen science fiction zijn, maar wel degelijk science faction. Producten die wellicht zullen blijven, die door ons worden gedomesticeerd, en op hun beurt onze manier van leven zullen veranderen. Die gewenning kan snel gaan. Wat eerst edgy of freaky was, is morgen gewoon en vertrouwd. Met zijn werk in het Eindhovense nanolaboratorium begeeft hij zich op het tussengebied van de relatie mens en technologie. Next Nature noemt hij deze door mensen en technologie veroorzaakte nieuwe natuur. Vanuit zijn next nature concept biedt de kunstenaar een platform voor een manier van kijken naar de wereld. Kunst ziet hij als een vorm van maatschappelijk commentaar. Hij wil verbeelding geven aan die wereld waarin we morgen leven. De waarde van zijn project zit niet in het spectaculaire, maar in het uitdrukking geven aan hoe wij nu denken over onze next natures. Daarnaast werkt hij aan een podium om het geheel te presenteren: de Nano Supermarket als expositieruimte. De supermarkt is een plaats waar consumenten haast vanzelf in contact komen met nieuwe producten en trends. Samen met een aantal collega s wordt gewerkt aan een SRV-bus, waarin de nanoproducten worden tentoongesteld. In de combinatie van het nostalgische van de SRV-bus en het futuristische van de edgy producten ligt de kracht om ons te verhouden tot het nieuwe van de nanotechnologie en een mogelijkheid om deze next nature voor bezoekers aansprekend te verbeelden. Verbinden De kunstenaars hebben laten zien dat de weg naar kunst niet smaak, maar inzicht is. Nanowetenschappers doorbreken bestaande ordeningen en taboes. Kunstenaars dagen uit verder te denken, buiten de toepassingen om. Denken in toepassingen is kwetsbaar, omdat er een bedoeling achter zit die de blik vernauwt. 9 L u c i e n H a n s s e n Nano Supermarket Artist Koert van Mensvoort looked in his conversations with the Eindhoven nano scientists for edgy nano products. Daily products that are not science fiction, but really science faction. Products which are likely to stay, they will get domesticated and in turn will change our way of life. Such dependence can be swift. What once was edgy or freaky, is tomorrow ordinary and familiar. With his work in the Eindhoven nano laboratory he embarks upon the intermediate area of the relationship between people and technology. Next Nature, he names this new nature created by man and technology. From his next nature concept the artist provides a platform for a way of looking at the world. He sees art as a form of societal commentary. He wants to depict that world we live in tomorrow. The value of his project lies not in spectacular imagination, but in expression of how we think about our next natures. He is also working on a stage to present the new products: the Nano Supermarket as an exhibition space. The supermarket is a place where consumers almost automatically come into contact with new products and trends. Together with some colleagues he is working on a bus, where the nano products will be on display. The combination of the nostalgia of the bus and the perspective of the edgy products, renders a strong vehicle to visitors to relate to the novelty of nanotechnology as an opportunity for appealing imagination of this next nature. Connections The artists have shown that the way to art is not appreciation, but understanding. Nanoscientists break through existing orders and taboos. Artists challenge them to think further beyond applications. Thinking in applications is vulnerable due to the intrinsic intent which narrows the gaze. One may look no further and miss important things. Many nanoscientists as do artists work at two levels: finding verity and finding beauty. Participants in the project the Art of Nanotechnology are actually the connection between those two levels. Therefore it does matter to affirm this connection and not to fall back on one of the two and again to think in the classic opposition between sciences and arts. The key question in the artistic research of Sietske Sips and Taco Stolk is about how nanotechnology implicates new forms of aesthetics. They searched for new forms, new characteristics of aesthetics which provide a sensory experience on a human scale, as they are the direct result of actions or structures on a nano scale. The Art of Nanotechnology has presented Merijn Bolink an additional almost transcendent dimension, since it was possible for him to manipulate the fundaments of matter on an atomic scale in the project. For Koert van Mensvoort the main question is not can we use technology on a nano scale, but how can we handle this new nanotechnology. In our attempts to overcome nature, we always cause a next nature which just might be as wild and unpredictable. Beginning conversations Art and science seek other types of solutions, but often draw the same questions. The project The Art of Nanotechnology has spurred a new way of cooperation between the two domains. A cooperation that is not based on differences, but on agreements. This complementarity wants to interpret the world in terms of explanation and experience. The Art of Nanotechnology reveals - and empathizes - how humans relate to the nano scale. For many of us this scale goes beyond our powers of imagination. The project will take us from this scale in a perceivable way to think about possible applications of nanotechnology in our own environment. For the artists, it is important that this occurs with an open mind and without prejudices and vested stances. The phenemenon of scale - The art of Nanotechnology 11

10 L u c i e n H a n s s e n over het hoofd. Veel nanowetenschappers werken net als kunstenaars op twee niveaus: dat van waarheidsvinding en dat van schoonheidsvinding. De deelnemers in het project de Kunst van Nanotechnologie vormen feitelijk de verbinding tussen die twee niveau s. Het is interessant om die verbinding te laten bestaan en niet terug te vallen op één van de twee en wederom te denken in de klassieke tegenstelling tussen wetenschap en kunst. De kernvraag in het artistiek onderzoek van Sietske Sips en Taco Stolk gaat over hoe nanotechnologie nieuwe vormen van esthetiek impliceert. Zij zijn op zoek gegaan naar nieuwe vormen, nieuwe karakteristieken van esthetiek die op een menselijke schaal een sensorische beleving geven, terwijl ze het directe gevolg zijn van constructies of handelingen op een nanoschaal. De Kunst van Nanotechnologie heeft voor Merijn Bolink een extra haast transcendente dimensie gekregen, omdat het voor hem in dit project mogelijk is geweest de fundamenten van de materie op atomaire schaal te manipuleren. Voor Koert van Mensvoort is de belangrijkste vraag niet het feit dat en hoe we technologie op een nanoschaal kunnen bedrijven, maar hoe wij omgaan met die nieuwe nanotechnologie. In onze pogingen de natuur te overwinnen, veroorzaken we altijd weer een next nature die misschien wel net zo wild en onvoorspelbaar is. Beginnende conversaties Kunst en wetenschap zoeken andersoortige oplossingen, maar stellen vaak dezelfde vragen. Het project De Kunst van Nanotechnologie heeft een aanzet gegeven tot een nieuwe manier van samenwerken tussen beide domeinen. Een samenwerking die niet is gebaseerd op verschillen, maar op overeenkomsten. Een complementariteit die de wereld wil duiden in termen van verklaarbaarheid en van beleefbaarheid. De Kunst van Nanotechnologie laat zien en maakt invoelbaar - hoe wij mensen ons verhouden tot de nanoschaal. Een schaal waarvan velen zich nog geen enkele voorstelling kunnen maken. Het project wil ons vanuit die schaal op een inlevende manier laten nadenken over mogelijke toepassingen van nanotechnologie in onze eigen leefwereld. Voor de kunstenaars is het belangrijk dat dit met een open blik en zonder vooroordelen en ingenomen standpunten gebeurt. Bij iedere nieuwe ontwikkeling op elk gebied zijn altijd kunstenaars betrokken. Veel van ons denken is beïnvloed door hun werk en ideeën. Artistiek onderzoek werkt vanuit een visionair concept én realiteitszin; artistiek onderzoek verbeeldt door te belichamen. Het project wil laten zien dat de samenwerking tussen kunstenaars en wetenschappers nieuwe beelden en betekenissen genereert die betekenisvol en bruikbaar zijn in de maatschappelijke dialoog over nanotechnologie. De resultaten van het artistiek onderzoek, zoals weergegeven in de volgende hoofdstukken, zijn daarmee ook te beschouwen als beginnende conversaties over de gecompliceerde en tegelijkertijd zoekende en aftastende manieren waarop een samenleving omgaat met technologische verandering. Lucien Hanssen Curriculum Vitae Lucien Hanssen (1960) studeerde biologie en wetenschapscommunicatie en is gepromoveerd in maatschappelijke sturing van technologie. In 1998 is hij Deining Maatschappelijke Communicatie & Governance gestart. Dit onderzoeksbureau houdt zich op een vernieuwende wijze bezig met communicatie over en sturing van innovaties uit wetenschap en technologie en de betekenis van dit wetenschappelijk en technologisch handelen voor mens en omgeving. Hierbij ligt de focus op het ontwikkelen van methodieken voor maatschappelijke participatie en op een taal die deze onderwerpen niet alleen bespreekbaar maar ook invoelbaar maakt. Artistic research arises from a visionary concept and a sense for reality. Artistic research represents by embodying. The project has shown that cooperation between artists and scientists generates new depictions and meanings that are significant and useful in a societal dialogue on nanotechnology. The results of artistic research, as shown in the following chapters, can be regarded as beginning conversations about the complicated and messy, and at the same time searching and exploring ways in which a society deals with technological change. Lucien Hanssen Curriculum Vitae Lucien Hanssen is director of Deining Societal Communication & Governance, a research bureau which is primarily concerned with innovations in science and technology and their implications for society and the human environment. The bureau s focus is on scientific uncertainties as they affect policy decisions, and the development of methods which can promote and facilitate public consultation and participation. Alongside his work with Deining, Lucien lectures in policy strategies and communications at the universities of Twente, Wageningen and Nijmegen, where he is also engaged in various academic research projects. Mijn beelden (sculpturen, installaties etc.) zijn meestal gemaakt van hun onderwerp zelf en zijn ondanks allerlei ingrepen in fysieke zin identiek aan hun oorsprong. Ze bestaan uit appels en schoenen, uit dieren, bloemen, boeken, auto s etc. Zelden gebruik ik standaard expressiematerialen. De uitnodiging om samen met nanowetenschappers kunst te maken op atomair niveau nam ik dankbaar aan: het stelde mij in staat echt dicht bij de bouwstenen van mijn bronnen te komen en aan de basis te sleutelen. Behalve dat is het ook fantastisch om in de voorhoede te worden opgesteld: wereldwijd zijn er nauwelijks kunstenaars met nanotechnologie bezig 1, en in Nederland zijn we mogelijk de eersten, in elk geval pioniers. Historici kunnen in de toekomst vermelden dat er in Nature Sucks, 2006, hout, 90 x 95 x 50 cm, coll. Kunstenaar 2010 in Nederland kunstenaars met nanotechnologie bezig waren. Nanokunst heeft natuurlijk vele valkuilen. Het fenomeen van de schaal zal andere betekenislagen enorm in de weg staan. Een ander lastig aspect is, dat als gevolg van de maat, elk kunstwerk onzichtbaar zal zijn, tenzij het uit grote hoeveelheden deeltjes bestaat die tegelijkertijd kunnen worden geproduceerd of tenzij het kunstwerk met een elektronenmicroscoop bekeken wordt, waardoor het resultaat zal bestaan uit een interpretatie van de atomaire werkelijkheid ervan. Beide problemen heb ik niet helemaal of zelfs helemaal niet weten op te lossen. Mijn collegakunstenaars Koert, Taco en Sietske hebben met anders gekozen uitgangspunten deze problematiek slim weten te omzeilen, waar ik natuurlijk wel een beetje jaloers op ben. Ik denk echter dat onze verschillende werkwijzen elkaar uiteindelijk heel goed konden aanvullen. Tijdens een lange brainstorm kwamen allerlei wilde en minder wilde ideeën tot stand: tot tekst gevormde DNA moleculen, nanosculpturen afkomstig van een gouden tientje, inkt met gelabelde inktbolletjes, ideeën voor nano licht- en geluidsexperimenten, Grey Goo -video s over oncontroleerbare, zelfreplicerende nanostructuren die alles afbreken, etc. 1 Op internet wordt heel veel nano-art genoemd, er zijn zelfs nano-art competities, maar doorgaans komt daar geen kunstenaar aan te pas en betreft het fraai bewerkte plaatjes van nanostructuren. 14 Het fenomeen van de schaal - De kunst van Nanotechnologie

My pieces are usually made from their own subject matter and despite various interventions they are physically identical to their origin. Pieces consist of apples and shoes, animals, flowers, books, cars, etc. I rarely use regular artists materials. The invitation to make art at the atomic level with nanoscientists, I accepted thankfully. Now I finally could approach the very building blocks of the sources and even manipulate them! It is also great to be able to operate as a pioneer pretty much: worldwide very few artists work with nanotechnology 1, let alone in the Netherlands, we might be the first. Historians in the future will state that in 2010 in the Netherlands at least some artists were working with nanotechnology. Making nano art involves a lot of risks. The phenomenon of scale could very easily overrule all other layers of content in the works. Another problem might be that due to the size each structure will be invisible, unless large quantities of particles can be produced at once, or, unless the artwork is observed with an atomic force microscope, producing an interpretation of the atomic artwork on a screen. These two problems I couldn t elimininate really. My fellow artists Koert, Taco and Sietske started from different levels and cleverly managed to exclude these problems, which I obviously am jealous of. However, I think our different approaches did complement each other very well. During the eleborate brainstorm all sorts of wild and less wild ideas evolved: text shaped DNA molecules, nano-sculptures from an antique golden coin, labeled ink balls, ideas for nano light- and sound experiments, Grey Goo videos on uncontrollable self-replicating nanostructures destroying everything, etc. After a visit to MESA+, UT s Nanolab, I decided to focus on one of the technical installations used to create and investigate new materials. It is a pretty large, very costly and complex system developped to stack and process elements in layers of only a few atoms thick. Surprisingly, I was allowed to bring my own really dirty- materials into the system. I decided to look for a pair of inseparable objects, a sort of pendant, one half of which would be the source for the nano sculpture, leaving the other half for another sculpture in a dimension far away from the lab. I also wanted my source to date from another era, long before my birth. An antique object has a kind of time depth that tells something about the temporal existence of things and the time in which we now z.t. 2004, edited prunusbranch, 50 x 25 x 5 cm 1 Lots of nano-art can be found on internet, even nano art competitions, but generally there are no artists involved. 14 M e r i j n B o l i n k Na een bezoek aan MESA+, het nanolab van de Universiteit Twente besloot ik me te richten op één van de opstellingen waarmee nieuwe materialen gemaakt worden: een kamervullende, zeer kostbare en complexe installatie waarmee elementen in lagen van (maar) enkele atomen dikte kunnen worden gestapeld en bewerkt. Het bleek tot mijn verbazing dat ik ook mijn eigen, verre van steriele, materialen mocht introduceren in het systeem. Ik besloot twee voorwerpen te zoeken, onlosmakelijk met elkaar verbonden, een soort pendant, waarvan de ene helft de bron zou zijn voor een nanobeeld en de andere helft voor een ander beeld, in een dimensie ver buiten het lab. Ik wilde ook dat mijn bron uit een andere tijd zou stammen, van lang voor mijn geboorte. Een antiek voorwerp heeft een soort tijd-diepte die iets zegt over het tijdelijke bestaan van alles en over het tijdperk waarin we ons nu bevinden waar zoiets als een nanolab mogelijk is. De zoektocht duurde zoals gewoonlijk lang. Op een antiekmarkt vond ik uiteindelijk een paar Belgische koperen kandelaars uit Dit was de juiste bron: een als zodanig bedoeld paar, antiek, goed van vorm en kleur, van zeer geschikt materiaal en niet onbelangrijk: vervaardigd om kaarsen te dragen en daarmee als oer-lichtbron te fungeren. En licht is nu precies wat in de nanowereld ontbreekt: in de nanowereld is het altijd donker. Belgische koperen kandelaars, ca Kandelaar A belandde in het nanolab. Josée Kleibeuker, promovenda bij Dave Blank en mijn trouwe bondgenote in het hele proces, had alles onderzocht op haalbaarheid en dat zorgvuldig voorbereid. Er werd een stukje uit de kandelaar genomen, dat werd beschoten met een laserkanon² waarna de weggeschoten atomen op een plaatje silicium landden. Dat plakje atomen werd vervolgens met een ionenbeamer verder bewerkt in een steriele ruimte. Vishwas Gadgil bestuurde daar met uiterste precisie de apparatuur. Gehuld in witte pakken keken we gedrieën naar het resultaat. De fase in deze cleanroom was voor mij het hoogtepunt van dit nanokunstproject. Op een beeldscherm kon ik live zien hoe in het laagje van mijn eigen antieke kandelaar-atomen het reliëf van mijn kandelaar ontstond. Het doemde in enkele minuten op, zoals het beeld op een polaroidfoto 3. Ik meende op dit sublieme moment iets te zien wat niet voor mensen bestemd is en het deed me denken aan momenten waarop ik voor het eerst 2 Tijdens deze laserbehandeling bereiken atomen een temperatuur van ca º C waardoor ze tijdelijk een plasma vormen. 3 Het wonderlijke is dat ook het kijken zelf weer sporen achterlaat op de afbeelding: de elektronenmicroscoop vuurt continu ionen af op het te bekijken onderwerp waardoor er atomen van het object wegketsen en er een afdruk ontstaat. 16 Het fenomeen van de schaal - De kunst van Nanotechnologie

On an antique market I finally found a couple of Belgian, brass candlesticks dating from This was the perfect source: two objects intended as pairs, antique, good of color and shape, made of suitable material and, in fact, made to carry candles and thereby referring to light. And light is what is missing in the nano world: it s always dark over there. Candlestick A was introduced in the Nanolab. Josée Kleibeuker, PhD student with Dave Blank and my loyal ally in the whole process, had tested everything for feasibility and carefully prepared the process. An excerpt from the candlestick was separated and shot upon with a strong laser 2 after which the atoms landed on a silicon mini wafer. The wafer with the special atoms was then further processed with an ion beamer in a sterile environment. The phase in this socalled clean room was the highlight of this nano art project to me. Vishwas Gadgil controlled the equipment with utmost precision and we were all dressed in white suits. On a screen I witnessed live images showing my own antique copper atoms being shaped into the relief of the candlestick 3. It loomed in a few minutes, like the image on a polaroid. This sublime moment I experienced as seeing something humans are not supposed to see. It reminded me of the moment when I observed the sun through a large telescope. Candlestick B we cut in 144 numbered pieces. Each piece was sent by mail to a carefully chosen address somewhere in the world, accompanied with a text and a link to a weblog: theworldasadrawingpad.blogspot. com. All 144 addresses together form the contours of the antique candlestick, but then as a huge drawing with a size of 2000 x 6000 km, seen from space. The recipients could trash the piece or keep it. In both cases each piece would stay within its 50 km radius, saving the drawing for several decades. Conclusion I would like to describe this project as a collective attempt to produce a transcendent experience. Both the nano and the giant candlestick are part of the physical world, consist of atoms, have dimensions and a place in time, but they remain invisible to us, unless they are mentally reconstructed. At times I manage to reconstruct them in mind, connecting both ends of a spectrum, something I tend to describe as Chandelier component with laser treatment marks and silicon wafer: nanochandelier support 3 Watching through an electron microscope, ironically, leaves traces on the image one observes: continuously firing electron ions on the subject will kick atoms out and leaves a trace. 16 M e r i j n B o l i n k door een grote telescoop naar de zon keek of voor het eerst vloeibaar stikstof zag, zo koud dat het weer leek te koken. Kandelaar B werd in 144 genummerde stukjes gezaagd. Elk stukje werd per post naar een zorgvuldig gekozen adres ergens in de wereld gestuurd met een korte begeleidende tekst en een link naar een weblog: theworldasadrawingpad.blogspot.com. De 144 adressen vormen samen weer de contouren van de antieke kandelaar met een afmeting van 2000 x 6000 kilometer: een reuzentekening. De ontvangers mochten het materiaal meteen weggooien of bewaren, in beide gevallen zal het in een straal van 50 km een eindbestemming vinden en de tekening in stand houden. Conclusie In feite zou ik dit project willen omschrijven als een poging tot het gemeenschappelijk produceren en delen van een transcendente ervaring 4. Zowel de nanokandelaar als de reuzenkandelaar maken deel uit van de fysieke wereld, bestaan uit atomen, hebben afmetingen en een plaats in de tijd, maar zijn voor ons onzichtbaar. Ze zullen telkens opnieuw in gedachten moeten worden gereconstrueerd. Soms lukt dat even en worden de beide uiteinden van een spectrum tastbaar, wat ik een transcendente observatie zou willen noemen. Ik voel me dan licht en met het universum verbonden, veroorzaakt door een paar antieke kandelaars zonder kaarsen nota bene... Met heel veel dank aan: Dave Blank, Vishwas J.
