4 DESIGNERS EDWARD VAN VLIET Edward van Vliet is de onafhankelijke en ambitieuze designstudio van destination designer Edward van Vliet. Edward van Vliet behoort tot de generatie hedendaagse Nederlandse ontwerpers die al tientallen jaren overal ter wereld voor sensatie zorgen. 25 DESIGNERS BOB MANDERS De gebouwen van architect Bob Manders karakteriseren zich door de tastbaarheid van materialen, de veranderbaarheid van ruimten, de zichtlijnen, de grote hoeveelheden bergruimte en de doordachte functionaliteit. De uitdrukking en sfeer zijn warm, non-uniform en non-conformistisch. Manders kijkt steeds verder dan waar de blik normalerwijs zou rusten: zijn minimalistische leefomgevingen blijken niet kaal, maar juist bijzonder rijk te zijn doordat de focus op precies een ander punt ligt dan wat de gebruiker in eerste instantie logisch lijkt. Een gebouw lijkt heel simpel, totdat je ziet dat er juist geen kolom staat waar je hem eigenlijk had verwacht. Een kamer lijkt leeg, totdat een taatswand wordt omgedraaid en er een enorme boekenkast verschijnt. Na zijn studie Bouwkunde in Delft, waar hij afstudeert met een eervolle vermelding, wordt Bob Manders aangenomen op de Architectural Association te Londen, een prestigieuze opleiding waar enkele door Manders erg gewaardeerde architecten studeerden, zoals Zaha Hadid, Pawson en Silvestrin. Gedurende deze opleidingen ontwikkelt Manders een sterk eigen visie op een allesomvattende architectuur van de leefomgeving. Hij raakt sterk geïnteresseerd in de integratie van kwalitatieve architectuur met binnenhuisarchitectuur, landschapsarchitectuur en stedenbouw. Totaalarchitectuur. Wanneer je je hand op een deurkruk legt, is het eerste contact met de achterliggende ruimte al gelegd. Deurbeslag is voor een architect de eerste mogelijkheid om mensen daadwerkelijk contact te laten maken met een gebouw of ruimte. Om de gebruikers het ontwerp echt te laten voelen. Het deurbeslag dient daarbij als een visitekaartje voor de stijl of levenshouding die in het gebouw of de ruimte erachter heerst. Manders filosofie is om het dagelijkse leven te verrijken door te ontwerpen voor alle zes de zintuigen en door een projectievlak te creëren voor bewoners, natuur en omgeving. Een gebouw moet je kunnen voelen, horen, ruiken, zien en proeven... En begrijpen... Een deur is daarin een perfecte drager en specifiek het deurbeslag een perfecte manier om het raffinement en de finesse van het ontwerp tentoon te spreiden. De greep van een voordeur geeft de eerste indruk bij het betreden van een gebouw; een deurkruk van een binnendeur de eerste indruk van de achterliggende ruimte. Voor FORMANI ontwierp Bob Manders het deurbeslag RIBBON. Een totaalconcept deur-, raam- en meubelbeslag dat zich kenmerkt door het geborsteld roestvast staal dat zich als een gevouwen lint lijkt te wikkelen om de hand. De deurkrukken uit deze lijn hebben geen rozet en zitten rechtstreeks tegen de deur aan gevleid. 48 The buildings of architect Bob Manders are typified by the palpability of the materials, the changeability of spaces, the sight lines, the massive storage space, and the well-thought-out functionality. The character and mood are warm, individual, and nonconformist. Manders is always looking further than where the gaze would normally rest: his minimalist living environments are anything but bare they feel amazingly lavish because one is made to focus on radically different elements than where instinct says the focus should go. A building seems quite simple, until you realise that where you expected to see a column, there is nothing. A room appears empty until a wall is rotated to reveal an enormous bookcase. After graduating with honours from the technical University in Delft, Bob Manders was accepted into the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London, a prestigious school which counts among its alumni some of Manders idols like Zaha Hadid, Pawson and Silvestrin. While studying here, Manders developed a unique vision of a comprehensive architecture of the everyday environment. He became deeply interested in the integration of qualitative architecture with interior architecture, landscape architecture, and urban development. So called total architecture. As soon as you have touched a door handle you have already made contact with the room beyond. Door fittings are an architect s first opportunity to allow people to make genuine contact with a building or room, to allow the users to really feel the design. Door fittings serve as a calling card for the style or attitude to life which permeates a building or room. Manders philosophy is to enrich daily life by designing for all five senses as well as instinct, and by creating a plane of projection for occupants, nature, and surroundings. A building should be felt, heard, smelt, seen, and even tasted and especially understood. A door is the perfect embodiment of this, and the door fittings are the perfect way to project the refinement and subtlety of the design. A front door handle offers the first impression of a building, while the handle of an interior door creates the first impression of the space beyond. For FORMANI Bob Manders designed door fittings, called RIBBON. A total concept of door-, window- and furniture hardware that is characterized by the way the brushed stainless steel seems to wrap itself around the hand as if it were a folded ribbon. The door handles of the line lack a rosette and seem to flatter themselves directly against the door. 49
