1 Aan de ouder(s)/verzorger(s) van de leerlingen van vwo 4 kenmerk : egl betreft : Handboek Internationale Oriëntatie Nijmegen, 8 oktober 2015 Geachte ouders/verzorgers, Op de voorlichtingsavond van woensdag 30 september bent u geïnformeerd over de Internationale Oriëntatie. Dit is een vast onderdeel geworden van het TTO-programma op het Kandinsky College. Inmiddels heeft bijna de helft van de leerlingen uit v5 een Internationale Oriëntatie gedaan of plannen gemaakt die op korte termijn te gaan doen. Van de leerlingen die terugkomen horen we positieve signalen: ze hebben zonder uitzondering een leuke en leerzame tijd gehad. Verschillende leerlingen hebben zelfs gevraagd een tweede internationale stage te mogen doen! Zoals toegezegd op de informatieavond stuur ik u bijgaand het handboek Internationale Oriëntatie. Internationale Oriëntatie We spreken over Internationale Oriëntatie om aan te geven dat de activiteit veel breder kan zijn dan alleen een werkstage in een bedrijf. Het is ook mogelijk om als vrijwilliger actief te zijn of om lessen te volgen op (hoge)school of universiteit. De nadruk ligt op internationaal oriënteren, niet op het werk zelf. De Internationale Oriëntatie is ook expliciet opengesteld voor leerlingen die de reguliere stroom vwo volgen en is daarmee niet langer voorbehouden aan leerlingen van het TTO. Oriënteren in een internationale context De Internationale Oriëntatie mag plaatsvinden op een plek waar een moderne vreemde taal de voertaal is. Dit hoeft niet per se Engels te zijn. Dit vergroot de mogelijkheden van het vinden van een plek enorm. Voor leerlingen op het TTO heeft een Engelstalige plek uiteraard de voorkeur, maar dat is niet langer een verplichting. Oriëntatie in groepsverband Leerlingen mogen een voorstel voor een gezamenlijke Internationale Oriëntatie doen. Ze kunnen met één of (bij uitzondering) twee medeleerlingen een plek vinden en zo besparen op inspanning en kosten. Belangrijk is dat het voorstel voor iedere deelnemende leerling een zichtbaar eigen invulling van het begrip Internationale Oriëntatie heeft.

2 Tijdstip van Internationale Oriëntatie Het is nu mogelijk de oriëntatie op een later moment in de opleiding te doen. Leerlingen zijn dan ouder, zelfstandiger en hebben meer ervaring. Aanvankelijk moest de stage afgerond zijn voor de meivakantie in klas 5, maar deze deadline is verschoven naar de zomervakantie in klas 5. In voorkomende gevallen is een Internationale Oriëntatie aan het begin van klas 6 ook bespreekbaar. Schoolactiviteiten binnen Internationale Oriëntatie Verschillende activiteiten die door school worden georganiseerd mogen ook tellen als Internationale Oriëntatie. Te denken valt hierbij aan de vrijwilligersreis naar Cambodja, de uitwisselingen met China, Zuid- Afrika en Duitsland en de talenreizen naar Spanje en Italië. Practical guide In de practical guide die opgenomen is aan het einde van het handboek worden concrete adressen gegeven van organisaties waar leerlingen terecht kunnen voor het regelen van hun Internationale Oriëntatie. Ook staat daar een kort verslag dat een aantal leerlingen heeft geschreven naar aanleiding van hun internationale stage. Onze TTO-afdeling heeft veel contacten in het buitenland en zeker in Groot- Brittannië. De stagecoördinator, mevrouw Gretchen Conrad, helpt leerlingen graag op weg met hun Internationale Oriëntatie. 5 1. Inleiding Als onderdeel van de opleiding aan het tweetalig vwo, doe je in het vijfde leerjaar zelfstandig een activiteit in het kader van internationale oriëntatie. Je gaat minimaal een week naar het buitenland om daar mee te draaien in een school, bedrijf of instelling. Het type werk maakt niet uit, het moet alleen wel bestaan uit minimaal 25 uur aan activiteiten en de voertaal op de werkvloer mag niet Nederlands zijn. Je mag geen vergoeding ontvangen voor je werkzaamheden. Sommige leerlingen kiezen ervoor om de stage al in het tweede semester van het vierde leerjaar te doen, of in de zomervakantie van leerjaar 4 naar leerjaar 5. Dat mag. Waarom internationale oriëntatie? Het Kandinsky College bouwt het onderwijs op de pijlers Onderzoeken, Ondernemen en Wereldburgerschap. Het tweetalig onderwijs wordt landelijk gecertificeerd volgens de standaard TTO. De ambitie in het kader van Wereldburgerschap is om een certificering tot ELOS-school te behalen. Internationale oriëntatie is een belangrijk onderdeel van deze certificeringen en sluit uitstekend aan bij de onderwijspijlers. Daarnaast past het specifiek in het vwo, dat voorbereid op een wetenschappelijke studie. Toelating tot universiteiten wordt steeds strenger en leerlingen die kunnen aantonen dat ze zich onderscheiden van anderen hebben duidelijk een streepje voor. Voor leerlingen van de bovenbouw vwo tto is internationale oriëntatie onderdeel van het onderwijsprogramma, want: Het vergroot internationaal cultureel en maatschappelijk bewustzijn Het vergroot ervaring in een internationale werkomgeving Het verbetert communicatievaardigheden in een vreemde taal Het zorgt voor persoonlijke ontwikkeling, onder andere op het gebied van verantwoordelijkheidsgevoel en zelfstandigheid Voor leerlingen van de bovenbouw vwo regulier is internationale oriëntatie niet verplicht, maar leerlingen worden aangemoedigd deze wel te doen. 3

6 3. Wat wordt van de stagiair(e) verwacht? Het is voor een juiste organisatie en verloop van de stage belangrijk dat je op tijd je zaken regelt. Hiervoor zijn achter in dit handboek formulieren opgenomen, die op de juiste moment moeten worden ingeleverd. Je kunt deze formulieren ook downloaden van Magister. Onderdeel van dit handboek is een practical guide, die concrete handvatten geeft voor het leggen van contacten. 3.1 Het zoeken van een gastgezin Het zoeken van een betrouwbaar gastgezin is meestal de eerste stap in het organiseren van je stage. Je kunt proberen een gastgezin te regelen via familie, vrienden of kennissen in het buitenland. Ook kun je contact opnemen met een gastgezin waar je eerder te gast bent geweest. Als je het gastgezin niet persoonlijk kent, schrijf dan een uitgebreide waarin je jezelf voorstelt: ben je een jongen of meisje, wat is je leeftijd, wat voor schoolopleiding volg je (je kunt voor meer informatie verwijzen naar de website van Kandinsky College), wat zijn je hobby s en interesses. Het is natuurlijk ook belangrijk dat je uitlegt wat de bedoeling is van de stage: het moet meer zijn dan een leuke vakantie waarbij je je Engels oefent; je moet ook naar een school of een bedrijf / instelling. Je kunt de voorbeeldbrief 4.9 gebruiken om de doelstelling van de internationale stage duidelijk te maken. 3.2 Het zoeken van een stageplek De stageplek kan een bedrijf, instelling of school zijn. Je moet uiteindelijk zelf contact leggen en onderhouden met de stageplek, dus niet je ouders (hoewel je ouders natuurlijk best het eerste contact mogen leggen). Je kunt de voorbeeldbrief 4.8 gebruiken om de doelstelling van de internationale stage duidelijk te maken. Het is erg belangrijk dat iedereen een plek heeft waar hij/zij goed past en zich comfortabel voelt. Daarom gaan alle leerlingen zelf, met behulp van hun eigen netwerk, op zoek naar een geschikte plek. Iedereen gaat alleen of met z n tweeën op stage. Uiterlijk twee maanden voor vertrek levert iedere leerling een stageplan in bij de stagecoördinator. Dat plan bevat gegevens over jou, je stageplek en je reis. Verder beschrijf je in het plan duidelijk wat de werkzaamheden zijn die je zult gaan doen en welke persoonlijke leerdoelen je hebt voor de stage. Die doelen kunnen bijvoorbeeld vaardigheden, oriëntatie op studie of beroep, burgerschapsvorming of persoonlijke ontwikkeling zijn. Een belangrijk onderdeel van het plan is tenslotte de ondertekening door betrokken partijen: jij, je ouders en school. Je kunt het formulier 4.1 gebruiken als stageplan. 4

7 3.3 In welke periode vindt de stage plaats? De leerlingen mogen hun stage lopen in de periode vanaf de start van het 2 e semester (februari) in vwo 4 tot en met de zomervakantie in vwo 5. Iedereen mag één schoolweek hiervoor missen. Indien een leerling langer dan één week stage wil lopen, moet de stage dus gekoppeld worden aan een vakantie. De stage kan niet plaatsvinden tijdens een toetsweek en ook niet tijdens het Cross Your Borders-project in vwo 4 (activiteitendagen april/mei). 3.4 Wat kost het? De kosten zijn uiteraard sterk afhankelijk van de bestemming en de accommodatie. Vanuit de TTO-ouderbijdrage wordt maximaal 250,00 beschikbaar gesteld voor de financiering van de stage. Binnen dat bedrag is een stage binnen Europa met verblijf in een gastgezin mogelijk. Indien de kosten van een stage hoger uitvallen is de leerling zelf verantwoordelijk voor het verkrijgen van het benodigde bedrag. Je kunt het formulier 4.7 gebruiken om een deel van je gemaakte kosten op school te declareren. 3.5 Welke mogelijkheden biedt de school? In bijzondere gevallen kan de school ondersteuning bieden bij het vinden van een stageplaats. Deelname aan de reis naar Cambodja, de uitwisseling met China of de (mogelijke) reis naar Uganda mogen ingezet worden als internationale stage. Leerlingen dienen ook in deze gevallen alle relevante documenten uit deze handleiding in te vullen. 3.6 Hoe wordt de stage afgesloten? Tijdens de stage houdt de leerling een (digitaal) dagboek bij. Na afloop geeft iedereen een presentatie over zijn/haar ervaringen tijdens de stage aan leerlingen van t-vwo 3. Zo kunnen zij inspiratie opdoen voor hun eigen stage. Na afloop van de stage lever je ook 3 evaluaties in: een eigen evaluatie, een evaluatie door je gastgezin en een evaluatie door je stagebegeleider. Als het dagboek, de presentatie en de evaluaties in orde zijn, is de stage afgesloten. Je kunt de formulieren 4.2, 4.3 en 4.4 gebruiken voor je evaluatie. 3.7 Verzekering Leerlingen zijn tijdens de stage beperkt door de school verzekerd met een ongevallenverzekering, een reisverzekering en een aansprakelijkheidsverzekering. Deze verzekeringen zijn alleen geldig als je stageplan is goedgekeurd en ondertekend door de stagecoördinator. Het is verstandig na te gaan welke verzekeringen je zelf al hebt (denk aan annuleringsverzekering, reisverzekering, ziektekostenverzekering), welke dekking deze bieden en deze waar nodig aan te vullen. De voorwaarden van de verzekeringen van school zijn op te vragen bij de stagecoördinator. 5

8 In sommige landen is het verplicht een verklaring bij je te hebben waarin staat dat je toestemming hebt om zelfstandig te reizen. Soms is het noodzakelijk of verstandig een verklaring bij je te hebben waarin je ouders toestemming geven voor medische behandeling. Je kunt de formulieren 4.5 en 4.6 gebruiken voor deze verklaringen. 6

9 4. Formulieren In dit hoofdstuk vind je brieven en formulieren die je kunt gebruiken om je internationale stage voor te bereiden. Let erop dat je deze formulieren en brieven op verschillende plaatsen zelf moet aanpassen. Meestal staan er stippellijntjes, soms staat er <tussen haken> iets dat je moet invullen. Doe dit aanpassen op de computer, zodat je nette formulieren en brieven meeneemt. De formulieren die je vóór aanvang van de stage moet inleveren, stuur je via naar de stagecoördinator. 21 5. Host families Important fact: In the UK, all host families who host children for pay must undergo a police background check. Families who work closely with Language Schools are carefully selected. Think internationally. Contact groups or organizations in the city you are interested in that are international in focus, such as language schools, language clubs, or even travel agencies or translators. There are currently three registered accommodation agencies approved by the British Council: 1) Britannia Student Services meets the standards for registration with the British Council as a provider of homestay, private home, residential, hostel and independent self-catering accommodation for adults and under-18s for accredited providers in London. Success stories Kandinsky College My internship in Indonesia, by Meilina Reksoprodjo After a long time of not seeing our family, my parents and I decided that we wanted to go visit our family again in Indonesia. Since I have to do my International Internship this year, my parents thought it would be convenient to combine those two things. And they took the opportunity to do it. I was delighted; I could gain some working experience on an international level at such a young age. So, my parents went onto social media and contacted a lot of family members. They wanted to find the right place for me and where it was possible to do in the period we wanted to. Eventually we found a place where a family member has her connections. It was an international school in Bogor, Indonesia. That family member also invited me to stay with their family. I also contacted several schools, but they all didn t respond. This might be due to the strict immigration/work issue in Indonesia. They don t accept foreign teenagers easily to do an internship. But, in other countries this might be different, so don t lose hope. Just send s to companies, schools and whatever you would like to do and tell them your story, because there is a chance you will be accepted. It s all about networking if you want to find a suitable and enjoyable internship. There will always be a way to find something that interests you. If you don t have a lot of connections, then it s all about taking initiative and having the guts to write a company or a school. I would recommend that you DO NOT spam companies, schools with your story, because that reduces your chance of being accepted at that particular company/school/whatever. 22

25 There were also some other things to consider visiting Indonesia; asking for the school s permission, booking the most affordable ticket and general things to consider: the details of travel, costs, residence during my stay, possible acquired vaccinations and travel papers. There were some problems concerning the immigration/visa/ working issue, but the people at the school have agreed to help us acquire the visa and help us get those other issues solved. As the summer is approaching, the prices for the hotels and the flights become more and more expensive so we thought it was handy to book early in the year. I would suggest you could do some research on the price of the tickets first (online), and then go to a travel agency where there is a possibility that the price of the flights you ve found might be lower if you book the flights through a travelling agency. And trust me, the researching is exhausting, but eventually, the hard work will be worth it. If you think about it, it s weird to be a 15-year old travelling to the other side of the world for an internship, but that is one of the perks of being a bilingual student. Good luck with finding your internship! New York, Here I Come, by Fleur Korzilius I have had quite some progress with my internship. My plan is to go to Larchmont, NY from the 4th till the 18th of May. I will stay at a friend of my mom's. My parents were the ones who brought me the idea to ask her if staying there was a possibility and to do my internship in the USA. My internship will be at the local library in town. The idea is to help around in the 'kids room', read to little kids and help out the librarians. The first contact with the library has been made and the director was very enthusiastic. Now I need to give her the details and I need to make sure that I know what is being expected from me, but I am positive about it! Because of the variety of activities done in the library with for example toddlers and primary school kids, I will be able to speak enough of English during the day. I think it will challenge me on a social and personal level and I will work on social skills (and overcome some 'fears' maybe). I found this place by just searching the internet and after that I also discussed it with my host, so I knew it was legit and contact was easily made. 23

26 Trip to Malawi, by Sophie Groot Zwaaftink In the summer of 2015 I am going to Malawi with Worldmapping, to do charity work; it'll also be my international internship. Malawi is a very poor country, located near the south of Africa. People earn on average about $2 a day. With that amount of money they can just feed themselves. With Worldmapping I'm going to visit villages, where I am going to help the people there, for example by helping build a school or by teaching children some English. This trip will take two weeks. I need around 1400 for this expedition, plus some money I'd like to donate to the people in the villages. To get this money, I've sold old clothes, bags etc. on Marktplaats; I have worked for money, but above all, I have saved a lot of money. Of course, I get 250 from school for my trip as well. International internship 2015, by Charlotte Wijlacker I m going to do my internship in Milan. The company where I will be that week is called BT, which is a British telecom company. They provide especially telecom services for other companies. The reason I chose this company is because my father works for it. After secondary school I would like to do an international study and I think that this is a good opportunity to get to know more about that, so that I will get a good idea of what it is like to work abroad. BT has multiple offices around the whole world. I chose Milan because I really like Italy and I have always wanted to visit Milan. Together with my father we arranged this internship. First he sent an to his employer to see if it would be possible for me to do this internship at BT. They gave us a few locations, in Europe, from which we could choose; Milan was one of them. Then we had to set a date. First we wanted to go in May but then the office on Milan would be closed because of a holiday and I realized that in May we also have an activity week. We decided to go in March because that would be the best option. My father and I started last year November/December with planning this. It took a long time before we could exactly arrange it with the people from Milan. Unfortunately we did not manage to arrange a host family for me, so my parents and I decided that they would spend a week in Milan as a holiday so that I can do my internship. My parents booked an apartment for the three of us. The reason why we did this is that otherwise we had to cancel the whole internship in Milan and that would be a shame because everything is arranged and organised! 24

27 My internship in South-Korea, Emma Scheffer The idea of doing my International Internship in South Korea all started when a good friend of mine, whose parents live there on an American Base, asked me if I would like to come with him there to visit his family. I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to find out even more about the culture, the people and the country itself by doing my internship there. There were a couple of things to consider such as receiving my mother s permission, booking the most affordable ticket, finding a suitable place to work for a week, asking for the school s permission and of course the general facts. Those facts include the details of travel, costs, residence during my stay, in my case if it was okay for my friend s parents if I would stay with them for about three weeks, possible acquired vaccinations and travel papers and some other things that had to be done before I went. This all went quite easy. My mom thought it was an incredible idea, so did the school if I did an extra assignment for I would stay away a week longer than initially allowed. In order to find a low-cost ticket I went to a travel agency and they got me a great deal. Furthermore, my stay would indeed be with my friend and his family and then all there was left was finding the actual place I could work. I did this by researching the facilities at the American Base where I could possibly be of help for one week. Eventually I contacted a High School and after some ing back-and-forth I got myself a place to do my Internship. So that s that. Finding a suitable and enjoyable internship is all about networking. There will always be a way to via via find something which is in your interests. If this really isn t the case it comes to initiative and guts. You have to contact companies, schools, whatever you would like to do and tell them your story, you ve got 50% chance with every you send and let me tell you this: it s a chance you really want to take.
