Zechstein, locations of salt domes (Schoonloo, Gasselte Anloo) Tertiary: 2. Surface Tertiary deposits (Schoonloo, Gasselte, Anloo) Quatenary: 3. Holocene: for instance peat areas, raised bogs, stream valleys and soils 4. Pleistocene a. Elsterian: Peelo Fm. and pottery clay (Lauenburger Ton) b. Saalian: especially Late Saalian (MIS 6) c. Weichselian: (cover sand and various permafrost features are present throughout the area) Clearly defined rock types This geopark has no hard rock but soft sediment, due to its position in a glacially deformed sedimentary basin. The sediments found are: river sand, cover sand, till, clay, pottery clay, melt-water sediment, gravel. Raised bog or high peat moor is also present, formed during the Holocene. Apart from that, there are more than 150 different types of erratics in the area Distinct geological or geo-morpholigical features The geological or geo-morpholigical features are: 1. More than 150 different types of erratics 1.3 Public interpretation of the Geopark s sites of interest Number of sites with public interpretation There are 27 sites with public interpretation. Eleven of these are designated as Geopark hotspots, and two also as Geological Monuments by the Province, and these therefore have specific geological interpretation panels. The other sites have panels combining geological and natural/cultural interpretation. In addition to the sites with panels, many of our sites are also described in the many guidebooks for walking and biking trails. These often give a popular public interpretation of the surroundings and the landscape, both geological and cultural. Geosite nr.
