Het schip, dat onder Zweedse vlag vaart, vertrok twee weken geleden uit Liberia, waar een burgeroorlog gaande is. Hoewel de vluchtelingen de juiste papieren hadden, werd hen de toegang tot Ghana geweigerd. Ook in Benin konden ze niet terecht. Eerder vrijdag dreef het schip stuurloos rond voor de kust van Togo doordat een vissersnet in de schroef was geraakt. Aan boord was inmiddels een groot gebrek aan drinkwater ontstaan. De VN-vluchtelingenorganisatie UNCHR heeft de Togolese regering om toestemming gevraagd met de Liberiaanse vluchtelingen te praten. Sleepboot 'Zeeland' gedoopt TERNEUZEN - De Unie van Redding en Sleepdienst (URS) in Nederland heeft 21juni in Terneuzen een nieuwe sleepboot gedoopt, met de naam Zeeland. De boot die gebouwd is in 1983 is overgenomen van de URS in België en had als thuisbasis Antwerpen. Het is de zevende sleepboot van het bedrijf die onder Nederlandse vlag gaat varen. Het is niet de eerste sleepboot die de naam Zeeland krijgt. Directeur-generaal W. de Schepper van URS: "In het verleden zijn al drie boten geweest die de naam Zeeland hadden. Deze sleepboot is echter een stuk krachtiger. De trekkracht is groter dan zijn vorige twee naamgenoten. Bovendien heeft deze boot een brandblusapparaat aan boord met een zeer grote capaciteit." Turkey Finds 277 Illegal Migrants on Ukraine Ship TEKIRDAG, Turkey--The Turkish coast guard detained 277 migrants, including 35 women and 22 children, on board a Ukrainian cargo ship Saturday before the vessel headed to Italy, local officials said. "Those who had illegally entered Turkey wanted to go to Italy on board of a ship whose first destination was given as Malta," the governor of the northwestern province of Tekirdag, Cemalettin Sevin, told reporters. An official, who declined to be named, told Reuters coast guard officers received a tip-off that wouldbe migrants were boarding a cargo ship from fishing boats in the Marmara Sea. 2 the migrants were from Iran, Iraq, the Palestinian territories, Pakistan and Turkey. Turkey is a transit point for people hoping to make their way from Asia, Africa and the Middle East to more affluent European countries. At least eight people died and dozens of others were presumed to have drowned after a Georgianflagged cargo ship carrying would-be migrants broke up and sank off Turkey's Mediterranean coast in January. The first explosion took place at 8.45 a.m. But when contacted by the Coast Guard, the Korean master, Mr Choe Kwan Yell, said he did not need any assistance. It was only after the ship was rocked by a second explosion at p.m. that he said the vessel had broken into two and was sinking. Two ships, the M.V. Clovely and the M.V. Aztec rescued 38 crew but did not see the bow which had already drifted away. After a Coast Guard Dornier spotted the bow drifting in the sea on June 16, the area was declared off limits for ships. The Coast Guard later requested the Indian Navy for assistance in sinking the bow which was moving at a speed of one knot per hour towards the Goa coast. A missile boat, the I.N.S. Nipat left on Wednesday evening to commence sinking operations, but later had to leave for another destination. The I.N.S. Nirghat, another missile boat reached the site where the bow was floating on Thursday. The I.N.S Nirghat fired several rounds in such a manner as to ensure that the bow did not disintegrate but went down in one piece. The bow sank in about 150 metres of water, 50 nautical miles south west of Goa. The I.N.S. Nirghat which continues to patrol the area has reported no oil seepage or pollution in the area. Coast Guard ships also continue to patrol the area to report if there is any pollution following the sinking. 10,000 TEU ships "uneconomic" MOVING to larger container ships over 10,000 TEU capacity does not provide overall economic gains, according to a US transport and port analyst. Speaking at the TOC conference in Lisbon, Asaf Ashar, group manager for port and intermodal systems at the National Ports and Waterways Institute, asserted that ship owners, not taxpayers, should pay for the additional costs borne by US ports. Recent calculations indicate that savings to owners from using ships of 10,000 TEU and over are less than the costs incurred by US ports, he said, suggesting that transhipment via Freeport, Bahamas would be preferable. Ashar said an international organisation should be set up to argue the case effectively and fight uncontrolled growth that will begin generating overall dis-economies of scale. Financiële details over de fusie en de overname worden niet bekendgemaakt. ZNS is in Nederland groot in de staalskeletbouw. Hollandia beschikt juist over een groot netwerk in het buitenland. Bailey is weer bekend van de staalbouw in stadions, de offshore en kranen. Door de fusie en de overname verwacht het nieuwe bedrijf een aantal synergievoordelen. Hollandia verhuist de dochters Kloos in Alblasserdam en Kloos Merofac in Sliedrecht naar het terrein van Bailey in Nieuw-Lekkerland. De werkgelegenheid blijft gewaarborgd. CASUALTY REPORTING Grounded ship stuck for seven hours A Maltese-flagged freight ship ran aground in 20 feet of water as it was navigating the narrow entrance to the Port of Miami-Dade Friday afternoon. It sat stranded for seven hours on a shallow shoal while the Coast Guard waited for the rising tide to lift it from the seabed. The problem started when the hydraulic steering failed on the Alma, which was bearing a load of lumber from Savannah, Ga., to Miami. The pilot was left with no way to control the 503-foot ship as it motored through a channel just a few hundred yards from the rocky jetties that mark the port's mouth, PSi-Daily Shipping News Page

The pilot hurriedly dropped anchor to slow the vessel, but it turned starboard and ran into the sandy-shell shoal on the north side of Government Cut. ``We heard the noise right away and we said, `Whoa, what's that?' We looked up and saw the smoke coming from the anchor room,'' said South Beach carpenter Max Rey, who was fishing with friends when the ship hit bottom. Smoke is a common sight when a ship drops anchor quickly. NAVIGATION TROUBLE During the day, the Coast Guard held back two container ships preparing to enter the port as the Alma's stern drifted toward the 30-foot deep channel used by large ships going in and out of the port, said Ensign Nicole Arroyo. The Coast Guard was concerned the container ships -- heavily laden vessels whose hulls extend relatively far below the waterline -- would have trouble navigating around the Alma in the 400-foot wide channel. Tugboats escorted cruise ships that were leaving the port Friday afternoon to make sure they stayed clear of the grounded vessel, and the accident caused no major disruptions to the port's operation, said Gerry Cafiero, an assistant port director. NO MAJOR DAMAGE The vessel's hull appeared not to be severely damaged and no fuel was leaking into the water, the Coast Guard said. A marine safety team from the Miami Beach Coast Guard Station inspected the Alma Friday evening and found no safety problems. After it was freed from the shoal, two tugboats towed the vessel into the port. The Alma, built in 1980, is a 12,230-gross-ton general dry cargo ship registered to Zenith Maritime of London, according to the Equasis international registry system. Records show the Alma had been cited for 16 deficiencies over five port inspections since 1998; none was serious enough to detain the ship in port. PSi-Daily Shipping News Page

5 SHIPYARD NEWS HARDINXVELD-GIESSENDAM - Bij Shipyard K. Damen BV te Hardinxveld-Giessendam is op woensdag 20 juni jl. een sleepboot/jacht met succes te water gezet. De tewaterlating is uitgevoerd door middel van de drijvende bok "Taklift 1". Het sleepbootjacht heeft een lengte van 33,50 meter, een breedte van 9,60 meter, een holte van 5,60 meter en een diepgang van 3,60 meter. Het gewicht van de sleepboot, bij de tewaterlating, bedraagt 430 ton. Hoewel bij Shipyard K. Damen in de afgelopen jaren reeds tientallen sleepboten zijn gebouwd is deze sleepboot uniek in haar soort. Het schip heeft een luxe interieur en zal dan ook niet gaan functioneren als werkschip maar meer als jacht. De betimmering, de inrichting en het schilderwerk zijn dan ook van een hoge kwaliteit. Teakhouten dek Het schip is voorzien van twee stuks Caterpillar hoofdmotoren van elk 750 kw, twee vaste schroeven met een diameter van 1800 mm, een boegschroef en een Blohm&Voss stabilisatiesysteem. Dit laatste systeem, bestaande uit twee intrekbare vinnen, zorgt voor het meest optimale zeegangsgedrag. De sleepboot is voorzien van twee stuks zeer luxe betimmerde en ingerichte verblijven. De grote salon is erop gebaseerd dat er een groot aantal daggasten aan boord kunnen verblijven. Uiteraard is er een teakhouten dek aangebracht. Verder zijn er uitgebreide navigatie middelen aanwezig voor het mogelijk maken van reizen van onbeperkte omvang. Op het boot dek zijn twee waterjet speedboten geplaatst die elk met een eigen davit overboord gezet kunnen worden. Verder zijn de nodige accommodatie ruimten voor de bemanning aangebracht waaronder eigen sanitaire voorzieningen, een eigen messroom en een eigen kombuis. PSi-Daily Shipping News Page

6 Vanwege de robuuste uitstraling van een sleepboot alsmede de veiligheidsaspecten van toepassing op een sleepboot, heeft de eigenaar gekozen voor deze unieke combinatie. Dit type schip heeft zich reeds bewezen doordat Shipyard K. Damen een eigen, bestaand ontwerp heeft gebruikt van een sleepboot die enkele jaren geleden is gebouwd en nog steeds aan de gestelde verwachting voldoet. Het is de bedoeling dat de sleepboot eind juli zal vertrekken naar haar thuishaven in het Midden Oosten. Orderportefeuille De orderportefeuille van Shipyard K. Damen BV is goed gevuld. In september zal een sleepboot bestemd voor Bangladesh worden opgeleverd. Medio 2002 zal een zestal sleepboten worden overgedragen aan een klant in Afrika. Bovendien is onlangs de opdracht verkregen voor twee sleepboten voor een klant in het Midden-Oosten. De herstructurering van de scheepswerf, welke samenvalt met de dijkverzwaring werkzaamheden, is nagenoeg afgerond en eind september zal er een open dag worden georganiseerd waarbij een ieder kennis kan nemen van de veranderingen op en om de scheepswerf Uniglory launches its tenth P-type containership Uniglory Marine Corporation christened and launched its tenth P-type full containership in a ceremony held at the Evergreen Shipyard in Nagasaki on June 22. Uniglory Chairman Loh Yao-fon named the new vessel Uni-Prosper while Mrs Loh Chu Chih-lan, Chairman Loh s daughter-in-law, cut the rope in the ceremony. Uniglory has ordered a total of ten P-type full containerships from Evergreen Shipyard, Uni-Prosper being the final ship in the series. The P-type has a container capacity of 1618 TEU. She has an overall length of 182 metres, a breadth of 28 metres, a draft of 9 metres and a service speed of 18.7 knots. The ship is also equipped with the latest navigational systems and has 256 reefer plugs. Uni-Prosper is scheduled to be delivered in September 2001 and will immediately join Uniglory s Far East/Middle East fixed-day service. This will bring Uniglory s fleet of owned ships to 42 vessels. RCL defers newbuilding options Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. says it has deferred its options to purchase a fifth and sixth ship within its new Radiance class. Royal Caribbean and Meyer Werft, Papenburg, Germany, builder of the Radiance-class ships, agreed to extend the options to July 26, Both options were to have expired on June 27, ROUTE, PORTS & SERVICES Protesters jeer tankers in Bosphorus straits A flotilla of small boats assembled in the narrowest section of one of the world's narrowest waterways yesterday to draw attention to the environmental threat posed by growing oil traffic in Istanbul's Bosphorus Straits. "It takes just three minutes for a crash to happen here that could burn for hours," Bulen Topaoglu, chairman of the Turkish Environmental Caucus told Reuters under the shadow of one of two bridges linking Istanbul's Asian and European sides. 7 the Mediterranean. Around 40 fishing boats, speed boats and launches jostled as people on board let off flares and jeered passing tankers. A Kazakh-Russian oil pipeline opened this year is expected to carry an average 800,000 barrels per day (bpd) which will have to pass through the Bosphorus by sea to be exported beyond the Black Sea. The Turkish government warned in April waiting times for ships passing through could be radically increased by the new shipments of Kazakh oil. Turkey is promoting an alternative route to Europe for Caspian oil, via a pipeline to the Turkish Mediterranean port of Ceyhan, bypassing the Bosphorus. Police earlier detained 13 environmentalists after protests against petrol companies taking part in an Istanbul energy conference, environmental group Greenpeace said. Three activists unfurled a banner from a hotel reading: "Oil industry fuels disaster here." Executives from oil companies BP, Shell and Chevron were at the conference on oil resources in the Caspian, eastern Mediterranean and Black Sea. The Bosphorus boat protests echoed the Turkish government line, which has become increasingly concerned with the prospect of oil shipments through the narrow straits. Turkey plans a new radar system for the straits but says it resents the risks and responsibilities of managing the waterway. "While Turkey and the people of Istanbul take on all the risks, they gain nothing. Petrol firms profit from this cheap transit route," Foreign Ministry official Mithat Balkan told the energy conference. Navigating the Bosphorus requires at least 15 changes of course. At its narrowest, the straits are 672 metres wide at a point where there is also a 45 degree bend. Currents and winds can be treacherous. Scores of passenger ferries ply back and forth between Asia and Europe across the path of large vessels. Major oil companies say they recognise the danger. "BP is of the opinion that we and the industry cannot rely solely on the Turkish straits for oil exports. We cannot rely on the Turkish straits due to the risks of disruption from accidents and spills," Linda Adamany, BP chief executive for shipping, told the conference. BP said it recommended all tankers take on Turkish pilots for the Bosphorus, something not compulsory under the 1936 Montreux Treaty and other regulations governing the straits. According to BP statistics, for every million transit miles on the Bosphorus there are six accidents, compared to three on the Suez Canal and 0.2 on the Mississippi River. More than 50,000 vessels navigate the Bosphorus every year. Of the 150 ships passing through each day, around 15 to 17 are tankers carrying oil, gas or other hazardous cargo. 'ECT wacht nog woelige jaren' Rotterdam _ Hans de Ruiter, directeur personeel & organisatie bij het Rotterdamse containeroverslagconcern ECT, heeft een bewogen half jaar achter de rug. Het grootste bedrijf van de Rotterdamse haven (2100 werknemers) was maandenlang het toneel van arbeidsonrust. Er was een conflict met het personeel over de zogeheten overhevelingstoeslag, dat zelfs tot voor de rechtbank werd uitgevochten. Het afsluiten van een CAO kostte opnieuw veel moeite. Pas na een week van stakingen en andere acties en weer een rechtszaak kon het akkoord worden afgesloten. De ingrijpende reorganisatie bij beide terminals loopt nog steeds door. Tot slot vreesden de medewerkers dat bij de nieuwe EuroMax-terminal van P&O Nedlloyd, waaraan ECT ook meedoet, de arbeidsvoorwaarden onder druk komen te staan. PSi-Daily Shipping News Page

Ik voorspel een woelige tijd, met zeker nog vijf jaar fundamentele veranderingen.'' De 40-jarige directeur uit Nieuwerkerk aan den IJssel wijt dat onder meer aan de moordende concurrentie op zee en de toename van het aantal eigen terminals van rederijen. Ook de nieuwe eigendomsverhoudingen en de grote in- en uitstroom van personeel zullen zijn sporen nalaten. De Ruiter zal dat zelf niet meer meemaken. Hij neemt komende dinsdag afscheid van ECT en wordt met ingang van 1 september directeur personeel & organisatie bij Heineken Nederland. De in Den Haag opgegroeide manager begon in 1989 bij ECT in een periode dat de fusie met de stukgoedbedrijven Quick Dispach en Müller-Thomsen net rond was.,,het was een complete chaos. Drie verschillende bedrijven die samen gingen. Eerst moest er fors worden gecentraliseerd om vele complexe zaken in goede banen te leiden.'' Hij somt op: verschillende CAO's, andere werkwijzen.,,bedenk dat stukgoed en containers eigenlijk niets met elkaar te maken hadden. Werken met containers is een zaak van organisatie, zwaar geautomatiseerd, bijna procesindustrie. Zoiets moet zeer gestroomlijnd gebeuren. Stukgoed daarentegen is vooral improvisatie,'' stelt De Ruiter.,,ECT werkte vol- continu, de anderen niet. We hadden opeens vijftien of zestien directeuren. Krankzinnig toch.'' Samen met de vakbonden en de ondernemingsraad werd gewerkt aan het integreren van de arbeidsvoorwaarden.,,we hadden zo veel verschillende regelingen, voerden bijna wekelijks overleg met de OR, die in korte tijd zestig adviezen moest geven. Ik noem het resultaat een sociale smeltkroes.'' Vriend en vijand bevestigen het positieve beeld. In 1993 volgde een fusie met Unitcentre, in de tussentijd was ook Kramer erbij gekomen. De Ruiter telt hardop en komt tot een onderneming waar in totaal 3700 werknemers hebben gewerkt. De Ruiter legt uit dat de deal voor ECT een goede zaak is geweest.,,ik denk dat Hutchison net op tijd is gekomen. Was het niet gebeurd, dan hadden we alarm moeten slaan. Dan zou ECT veel kwetsbaarder zijn geworden. Het personeel op de werkvloer zal weinig van de machtswisseling merken,'' is de overtuiging van de directeur.,,de arbeidsvoorwaarden zouden bedreigd worden. Wij geloven dat dat meevalt. Vaak denken mensen: het is slecht, want het is anders dan vroeger.'' ECT kan zichzelf blijven, onderstreept De Ruiter.,,Mede dankzij Hutchison, want in je eentje red je het vandaag de dag niet meer. De concurrentie neemt alleen maar toe.'' Door de toename van het aantal eigen terminals die rederijen in Rotterdam hebben, is de invloed van ECT afgenomen. De Ruiter herhaalt dat de werknemers daar niet minder van zijn geworden.,,ik hou staande dat wij nooit mensen in de kern van de bestaanszekerheid hebben aangetast. Een ECT'er verdient goed, we hebben hier een goede CAO.'' Waarom ECT dan vaak synoniem staat voor arbeidsonrust?,,ach, dat is het lot van de grootste. Als er iets gebeurt bij een klein bedrijf in de Europoort, dan is dat geen nieuws. Een actie bij ECT is dat wel.'' NS ECT-topman Carel van den Driest vergeleek het havenbedrijf eerder dit jaar met de Nederlandse Spoorwegen. De Ruiter is het daar niet mee eens.,,bij de NS leek sprake van een vertrouwensbreuk tussen medewerkers en management. Dat is hier niet het geval. De bonden waren daar de controle over de achterban kwijt, wij hebben te maken met sterke sociale partners. Als Van den Driest vindt dat we moeten uitkijken voor NS-achtige situaties, dan ben ik het daar mee eens. Maar bedoelt hij dat we hier eenzelfde situatie hebben, dan schrik ik daar van. Dan wordt ECT tekort gedaan. Ik ben van mening dat de arbeidsverhoudingen goed zijn.'' Volgens De Ruiter kan ECT langzaam gaan werken aan een herstel van de winst.,,we hebben over het jaar 2000 een bedrijfsresultaat bereikt van vijftien tot twintig miljoen gulden. Dat lijkt veel, maar een rendement van twee procent is natuurlijk veel te laag. We willen zware investeringsprogramma's PSi-Daily Shipping News Page

9 blijven uitvoeren, maar dan moeten we wel blijven groeien.'' Hij stipt aan dat de Home-terminal in het Eem-Waalhavengebied, de afgelopen jaren het zorgenkindje van ECT, toch uit de rode cijfers is gekomen. Het bedrijf blijft afhankelijk van de marktontwikkelingen, stelt De Ruiter.,,En die markt laat zich niet regulieren, niet door ECT, niet door de vakbonden of de OR. Dat besef moeten we hebben.'' Dankzij zijn 'rijke netwerk' kwam De Ruiter begin dit jaar in contact met Heineken. Bij de bierbrouwer gaat hij in Zoeterwoude dezelfde functie bekleden als bij ECT.,,Was deze betrekking bij de NS vrijgekomen, dan had ik dat misschien ook wel gedaan. Ik hou van uitdagingen.'' De Ruiter geeft aan dat hij Rotterdam zal missen.,,vooral het moment als ik 's morgens om half acht de Maasboulevard op rij.'' De directeur trof twaalf jaar geleden een chaos aan, maar stelt dat ECT er nu beter voorstaat.,,al zijn er nog wel bureaucratische trekjes. Ach, over tien jaar is het weer heel anders. Dan zijn er zevenhonderd mensen uitgestroomd. Er komt een hele nieuwe generatie personeel aan. Die zullen het fenomeen van rederij-terminals als heel normaal beschouwen.'' Lauwersoog vreest voor toekomst haven LAUWERSOOG - De Visafslag Lauwersoog b.v. beraadt zich op acties tegen plannen van de provincie en Groningen Seaports om in de Eemshaven een compleet nieuwe visserijhaven te ontwikkelen. De haven wordt ingericht voor Urker vissers die momenteel voor een deel Lauwersoog aandoen. Woordvoerder Harry Koning van de visafslag, de enige in de provincie:,,als die plannen gerealiseerd worden heeft dat zeker gevolgen voor de haven van Lauwersoog. We zien het dan ook met argwaan tegemoet en beraden ons op mogelijke stappen. Binnenkort hebben we overleg met het gemeentebestuur van De Marne en dan zullen we wel zien wat we kunnen doen. De visafslag staat nummer vijf op een landelijke ranglijst. De afslag in Urk is de grootste. De afslag in Lauwersoog heeft een jaaromzet van 76 miljoen gulden. Er werken in totaal 55 mensen, van wie er 40 als vissorteerder.,,daarnaast zijn er de tientallen toeleveringsbedrijven, die direct afhankelijk zijn van onze visafslag. De plannen voor de Eemshaven hebben dus niet alleen gevolgen voor ons, maar indirect ook voor de rest van onze regio. Het gemeentebestuur van de Marne is al in overleg met de provincie. Verantwoordelijk wethouder N. Bakker hoopt nog voor de zomer duidelijkheid te krijgen van de provincie.,,want we kunnen niet hebben dat een deel van de vis niet meer in Lauwersoog voor de klok komt. Een deel van het geld namelijk dat in de afslag wordt verdiend komt ten goede aan de haven.,,en dan spreken we jaarlijks over een bedrag van zeker een paar miljoen gulden. Vijf jaar geleden is de haven geprivatiseerd en zijn de aandelen in handen gekomen van een besloten vennootschap. Behalve de gemeente De Marne, de Friese gemeente Dongeradeel, hebben ook de provincies Friesland en Groningen een deel van de aandelen in handen. Bakker:,,het is e bedoeling dat de provincies hun aandelen eind dit jaar overdoen aan de beide gemeenten. Maar als de plannen met de Eemshaven doorgaan, hoeven wij die niet. De provincie heeft zich namelijk niet allen druk te maken over de Eemshaven, maar is ook verantwoordelijk voor Lauwersoog. [ LaLine-dienst op Noorwegen loopt meer havens aan De Noorse rederij LaLine zet een tweede schip in op de dienst die ze onderhoudt tussen een aantal West Europese en noorse havens. 10 Het nieuwe schip in de dienst is de 'Navigia' een zusterschip van de 'Rosita Maria'. Elk van beide loopt in één week een aantal havens aan. Voor de 'Rosita Maria' zijn dat Frederikstad, Larvik, Felixstowe, Rotterdam (vrijdags) en Oslo. De rotatie van de 'Navigia' is Larvik, Fredrikstad, Zeebrugge (donderdags), Antwerpen (vrijdags) en Immingham. NAVY NEWS NETHERLANDS TASK GROUP ARRIVED AT PLYMOUTH Devonport Naval Base will host five ships of the Netherlands Navy, for a four day visit from Friday 22 June onwards. Under the command of Commodore Jan Willem Kelder, the task group consists of the guided missile frigate HNLMS De Ruyter (flagship), the air defence frigate HNLMS Witte de With and the multi purpose frigates HNLMS Tjerk Hiddes and HNLMS Willem van der Zaan, with the support ship HNLMS Amsterdam. The combined ships companies total approximately 935 men and women. Having left their home port of Den Helder in May for a six week deployment, the purpose of the visit to Plymouth will be for well earned rest and recreation. They are due to return home in July. The Royal Netherlands Navy is capable of operating in open ocean as well as closer to shore. Major elements include air defence frigates, anti submarine warfare specialised multi purpose frigates, submarines, fast combat support ships and a landing ship-dock as well as a substantial mine countermeasures capability. The naval air arm comprises of Orion maritime patrol aircrafts and shipborne Westland Lynx helicopters. U.S. Navy to Commission Seventh LHD Amphibious Assault Ship The U.S. Navy's seventh WASP Class multipurpose amphibious assault ship, USS IWO JIMA (LHD 7), built by Northrop Grumman Ingalls Shipbuilding, Pascagoula, Miss., will be commissioned into Atlantic Fleet service on June 30, 2001, in Pensacola, Fla. The new ship will be homeported in Norfolk, Va. 11 Three U.S. Ships Depart From Jordan's Aqaba Port AMMAN (Reuters) - Three U.S. amphibious vessels left the Red Sea port of Aqaba on Saturday only a few days after they docked and troops disembarked for military exercises with the Jordanian army, army sources said. They said hundreds of U.S. Marines were sent back to USS Harpers Ferry, USS Cleveland and USS Boxer after they cut short a training exercise with the Jordanian army. No other details were given. On Friday, U.S. officials said forces in the Gulf had been put on Threat Condition Delta on Thursday based on a non-specific but credible threat linked to exiled Saudi dissident Osama bin Laden U.S. warships in Bahrain, headquarters of the U.S. 5th fleet, had been ordered to sea and a U.S. Marine Corps training exercise in Jordan was being cut short. Commander Jeff Gradeck, spokesman for the U.S. Naval force in Bahrain, on Saturday declined to comment on military movements or security measures. A high level of alert requires base guards and troops as well as families of service personnel to carefully watch for any threatening or unusual activities. In worst-case scenarios, U.S. warships leave their bases and put out to sea and troops are confined to bases. NBC television reported on Friday there had been at least three threats of attacks on U.S. forces in the Gulf on June 25, the fifth anniversary of the 1996 bombing of the Khobar Towers bombing, which killed 19 U.S. servicemen. The U.S. government has said it is unaware of any specific threats in response to the grand jury indictment. A similar worldwide caution has been in effect since May 29 after a New York court convicted bin Laden's associates of bombing U.S. embassies in U.S. embassies in Saudi Arabia and Qatar said on Saturday they were warning Americans to be on guard after U.S. forces in the Gulf were put on the highest alert against an ``increased risk of terrorist action.'' Royal Navy Surveys Freetown Peninsula HMS Beagle, a Royal Naval ship, is on its third and final survey mission of Sierra Leonean waters, state-owned SLENA reported on Thursday. The survey, described as the "most significant" undertaken for Sierra Leone, will update the Freetown harbour entrance chart to make it more accessible to commercial shipping, SLENA reported. The areas on the chart were last surveyed in The Beagle's captain, Commander Derek Turner, said the ship had worked primarily in the river, but also along most of the Freetown Peninsula. Slena reported that the ship's executive officer, Lt. Mike O'Sullivan, added that the vessel's role had been to provide a presence while collecting oceanographic and hydrographic data for the Sierra Leone government and harbour authorities. These will go to the Hydrographic Office in Taunton, southwest England, where the new charts will be produced and navigation publications updated for mariners worldwide.
