Compressors & vacuum technology As Europe is gearing up to achieve its ambitious but necessary goals on reduction of greenhouse gasses, the Belgian compressor industry is making important progress on the eco-design of its products. Reduced energy efficiency is achieved through more energy efficient drive trains (IE 2, EI3 motors) and better control of the drive trains via extensive use of VSD. Also, new compressors are getting more compact through improved design of the drive train and integration of VSD and transmission into one shaft. Increased energy efficiency also comes via better production techniques that allow for smaller tolerances 3

6 on the critical components of the compressor. Also, continuous progress is made in the cooling systems and increased possibilities are developing for heath recuperation. Pumps As for compressors, the Belgian pump industry is moving forward with the ecodesign of its solutions. Fundamental trends similar to those in the compressor industry, drive the pump industry forward. The integration of IE2 and IE3 electro motors combined with VSD explain for significant progress on the energy efficiency. But also the mechanical design of pumps is developing to reduce friction and abrasion such that higher hydraulic efficiency levels are achieved. The Belgian industry is already ahead of the new European legislation on energy efficiency of pumps (EC 547/2012 and EC 622/2012). Currently, the industry is working on methods to measure and reduce the resource consumption (environmental footprint) of its products throughout the product life cycle. Valves The world of valves is very wide. Valves are developed for the oil & gas industry, hydraulics, pneumatics, process industry Valves find their way into semiconductor industry but also in carpet weaving machines. Some segments are conservative and focus on cost, other segments are more demanding and require the valve industry to push ahead. Examples of that progress are the developments of membrane or diaphragm valves. Mechanical design, material selection, coatings, actuation are all dimensions on which progress is made. Also new valve designs are being developed such as C-rex type trunnion mounted double eccentric ball valves that guarantee perfect closure in tough conditions. New control and actuation technology allow more precise control of valves. Mechanical design, material selection and coatings, reduce friction and abrasion such that mean time between failure increases. Also intelligent design of installation kits, make the inclusion of valves in existing pipe networks easier. 4
