22 Lessons learned (1) 78 One of the strengths of service design is its flexibility + techniques are constantly evolving -> Toolkit has to evolve over time (value of online resources) Design techniques don t come naturally to non-designers -> Effort around buy-in and adoption has to be part of toolkit process Templates are great, knowing how to use them is even better Need to Make a clearer distinction in the methodology between completely new and improved services

23 Lessons learned (2) 79 Framing the problem is a key step, and one where external facilitation can help There is generally a need for better framing, better understanding of the business model and context by for example adding the drivers of the business model canvas tool or the purpose pyramid tool This phase should also be more explicit about the knowledge gaps and research questions The service design exercise should take into consideration the culture and the possibilities of the organization without being constrained by it

24 Lessons learned (3) 80 Collecting user insights is easy and difficult at the same time -> Finding key insights can make all the difference

25 Lessons learned (4) 81 Storytelling comes naturally, other ideation techniques are more difficult to apply Low level of comfort with low fidelity of prototypes Still a lot of text based communication within public institutions in our increasingly visual world

26 Lessons learned (5) 82 Everybody understands the value of testing but few make time and resources available to do it Testing requires skills and preparation and this is not easy to get across through a toolkit Effective service design cannot stop at the level of the user interface but making back-office changes requires transformation, skills, and resources The service design process should lay the groundwork for implementation (the toolkit can be improved in this area)
