2 Visitors guide arts Horst Arts & Music is an arts festival that combines experimental electronic music and in-situ visual arts. For the second year in a row, curator Gijs Van Vaerenbergh (Pieterjan Gijs en Arnout Van Vaerenbergh) invites a selection of artists and designers to create art that makes use of the context, namely that of the historic and rural character of the castle, but also that of the two day music festival. The festival dedicates itself to present various pieces of art, each within its own tempo, ranging from digital, performance or video art to sculptures and temporary installations. During the festival weekend the focus will be on the pieces that bridge both components of the festival. A prime example of this approach is the work that pioneering architectural duo Robbrecht & Daem architects designed for this edition: a pavillion that will be used as a stage during the festival. The music festival takes place on Friday the 11 th and Saturday the 12 th of September. The arts festival will start on that same weekend and will be continue until the 11 th of October. Bezoekersgids kunst Horst Arts & Music is een kunsten-festival dat experimentele elektronische muziek en in-situ beeldende kunst combineert. Voor het tweede jaar op rij nodigt curator Gijs Van Vaerenbergh (Pieterjan Gijs en Arnout Van Vaerenbergh) een tiental kunstenaars en ontwerpers uit om een werk te ontwikkelen en te realiseren dat inspeelt op de context: die van het historische en landschappelijke kader van het kasteel, maar evengoed die van het twee dagen durende muziekfestival. Daarbij wordt ingezet op een diversiteit aan werken met een eigen tempo: van digitaal over performance en videokunst tot sculpturen en tijdelijke installaties. Tijdens het festivalweekend staan vooral de werken centraal die een brug slaan tussen de twee luiken van het festival. Zo ontwerpt het toonaangevend architectenduo Robbrecht & Daem architecten een paviljoen dat als tweede podium gebruikt wordt tijdens het festival. Het muziekfestival vindt plaats op vrijdag 11 en zaterdag 12 september. Het kunstenfestival gaat datzelfde weekend van start en kan je doorlopend bezoeken tot 11 oktober. Horst Arts and Music

4 A collection of in situ work Gijs Van Vaerenbergh of visual art in a place like this and think up a way to coincide all of that with a music festival. The acquired experience made us ready for a second edition that is more ambitious in many different ways. Autonomy and common grounds [4] A second edition As Gijs Van Vaerenbergh we were invited to curate the artistic part of the first edition of the festival in To deepen the artistic program and vision year after year, it became a long term collaboration. An engagement that creates room for ideas to ripen and to set up lasting trajectories with artists. Participating artists can opt for a short and intense collaboration, but also engage in a long term trajectory that exceeds a single edition. By consciously choosing for longer collaborations, an involvement grows that offers a fascinating surplus value. Last year s edition was in a certain way a trial edition. A test that allowed us to get to know the context, to find out the significance The autonomous character of both parts of the festival is crucial to us. Purposefully opting for substantive and critical works of art, we want to counter the trend of narrowing down art on festivals to decoration that only serves commercial purposes. The works of art on the Horst site function autonomously separate from the musical part and form a fully independent part of the festival. Whereas a musical performance is a relatively short event inducing a short and intense experience, the visual arts as physical objects - are permanently present. Their meaning is often ambiguous and reveals itself more slowly. Horst Arts & Music explicitly aims to expose the fragile tension between music and the visual arts. That relative autonomy did not keep us from purposefully looking for common [5] EN

5 grounds. During the opening weekend both disciplines not only coincide in time, a number of pieces deliberately bridge both art forms. A prime example of that is the festival s second stage. Each year an artist or designer is invited to reflect on an experimental stage that questions the classic relation between artist and audience. In 2014 Jozef Wouters reinterpreted a circular shaped amphitheatre that he initially designed for a dance performance. This edition Robbrecht & Daem architects i.c.w. Mouton continue that tradition. Their interpretation of the stage is a great contribution to the visual arts part of festival, where it functions as a fascinating pavillion. We also explore different experimental possibilities regarding the scenography of a music festival and look for innovative ways to approach classic festival elements such as an entrance, fencing and lighting. [6] Art that questions the context Our background as practicing artists/architects is a major influence on our vision for the arts festival. For Horst Arts & Music we start from the same reading of the location as we do with our own work, but instead of developing a work ourselves, we now question the spatial and intrinsic insights together with the participating artists. We invite them to make new work that interacts with the context or reinterpret existing work in function of the location. By doing so, they don t focus on a theme but on the context of the castle and the music and arts festival itself. The location has various interesting spatial features that co-define the artistic program: the castle itself with its intimate courtyard, the castle pond as an abstract horizontal canvas, the walk around the castle with its changing viewpoints, the green tree line in the background, the alley flanked by monumental trees and so on. A number of pieces immediately originated as a direct response to that specific location. But the specific circumstances of the music festivals also have their influence: a nocturnal context with a large concentration of visitors the ideal context for video projections and lighting installations. 6 Of course, the artists are invited to challenge the suggestions and propositions of the curators. The result is a collection of in-situ work that allow the visitor a fresh look at the century old image of the castle and its surroundings. Een collectie van in-situ werk Gijs Van Vaerenbergh Gijs Van Vaerenbergh is an artistic collaboration, established by Pieterjan Gijs and Arnout Van Vaerenbergh (both 1983) after they graduated as architects. Their work mainly consists of public sculptures, site-specific interventions and experimental constructions. Central to their practice is a research into the fundaments of constructing and their impact upon the viewer. The duo misappropriates the language of architecture to use it as a medium for relatively autonomous and self-reflexive projects. Een tweede editie In 2014 werden we met Gijs Van Vaerenbergh uitgenodigd als curatoren van het artistieke luik van de eerste editie van het festival. Om de artistieke visie en het programma jaar na jaar te verdiepen, werd het een samenwerking op lange termijn. Een engagement waarin ideeën kunnen rijpen en duurzame trajecten met kunstenaars kunnen worden opgezet. Want deelnemende kunstenaars kunnen kiezen voor een korte en intensieve samenwerking, maar zich ook engageren voor een parcours dat verschillende edities overschrijdt. Door bewust in te zetten op langere trajecten, ontstaat een betrokkenheid die een boeiende meerwaarde biedt. [8] [9] NL

7 De editie van vorig jaar was voor ons in zeker zin een proefeditie. Een test die ons toeliet de context te leren kennen, na te gaan wat beeldende kunst op een plek als deze kan betekenen en te bevragen hoe dat alles met een muziekfestival kan samenvallen. Vanuit de ervaring die dat ons gebracht heeft, zijn we dit jaar toe aan een tweede editie die op verschillende vlakken verder gaat en ambitieuzer is. [10] Autonomie met raakvlakken De autonomie van beide luiken van het festival is voor ons van groot belang. Door resoluut te kiezen voor inhoudelijke en kritische kunstwerken, willen we met Horst Arts & Music ingaan tegen de tendens om kunst op muziekfestivals te reduceren tot inkleding ten dienste van een commerciële logica. De beeldende werken rond het kasteel staan op zichzelf als tentoonstelling los van het muzikale gedeelte en vormen samen een volwaardig onderdeel van het festival. Beeldende kunst en muziek zijn dan ook elk op hun eigen manier werkzaam. Zo is een muzikaal optreden een relatief kort evenement dat meestal een directe, intense beleving teweegbrengt. Beeldende kunst daartegen is als fysiek object blijvend aanwezig in de ruimte. Haar betekenis is meestal meerduidig en onthult zich eerder traag. Die relatieve autonomie belet echter niet dat we bewust een aantal raakvlakken tussen muziek en beeldende kunst opzoeken. Tijdens het openingsweekend vallen de twee luiken niet alleen samen in tijd, ook in een aantal werken wordt uitdrukkelijk een brug geslagen tussen beide disciplines. Het beste voorbeeld daarvan is het tweede podium van het festival. Elk jaar wordt een kunstenaar of ontwerper gevraagd om na te denken over een experimenteel podium dat de klassieke relatie tussen muzikant en publiek in vraag stelt. In 2014 herinterpreteerde kunstenaar Jozef Wouters een cirkelvormige tribune die hij initieel voor een dansvoorstelling maakte. Deze editie zetten Robbrecht & Daem architecten die traditie verder. Hun ontwerp van een podium blijft ook na het muziekfestival staan als paviljoen. Daarnaast zetten we ook in op andere experimenten met de scenografie van het muziekfestival. Zo proberen we op een vernieuwende manier om te gaan met de [11] NL

8 vaak klassieke elementen als een afsluiting, een inkom en verlichting. [12] Kunst die de context bevraagt Onze achtergrond als praktiserende kunstenaars/architecten is zeer bepalend in onze visie op het kunstenfestival. Voor Horst Arts & Music vertrekken we van eenzelfde lezing van de plek als bij ons eigen werk, maar in plaats van er zelf een werk te realiseren, bevragen we nu de ruimtelijke en inhoudelijke inzichten in dialoog met de kunstenaars. We nodigen ze uit om een nieuw werk te bedenken of om een bestaand werk te herinterpreteren in functie van de plek. Ze werken daarbij niet rond een thema, maar spelen in op de context van het kasteel en het muziek- en kunstenfestival zelf. De plek heeft een aantal bijzondere ruimtelijke kenmerken die sturend werken voor de artistieke programmatie: het kasteel zelf met zijn intieme binnenkoer, de kasteelvijver als een abstract horizontaal canvas, de wandeling rond de vijver met de wisselende zichten op het kasteel, het groene bomenfront op de achtergrond, de toegangsdreef die geflankeerd is door monumentale bomen enzovoort. Een aantal werken ontstaat dan ook als een directe reactie op de plek. Daarnaast hebben ook de specifieke omstandigheden van het muziekfestival een invloed: een nocturne-achtige, nachtelijke context met een grote concentratie aan bezoekers. En dat is een context die zich goed leent voor lichtinstallatie en videoprojectie. De kunstenaars worden uitgenodigd om in te spelen op voorstellen en aanzetten van de curatoren. Ze krijgen de ruimte om daar op voort te denken of de suggesties in vraag te stellen. Het resultaat is een collectie van in-situ werken die de bezoekers een nieuwe blik gunt op het eeuwenoude beeld van het kasteel en omgeving. Gijs Van Vaerenbergh is het samenwerkingsverband dat Pieterjan Gijs (Leuven, 1983) en Arnout Van Vaerenbergh (Leuven, 1983) startten na hun studies architectuur. Hun werk bestaat in de eerste plaats uit publieke sculpturen, site-specifieke interventies en experimentele constructies. Dat levert een praktijk op die in het teken staat van een onderzoek naar de fundamenten van het construeren zelf en de impact daarvan op de toeschouwer. [13] NL

9 [14] Exhibition Overview The various proposals of the artists have produced many different approaches to the location, coming from the individuality of the artist s oeuvre. Filip Dujardin, known for his surreal photo edits, creates an impossible reality. Starting from the romantic post card image of the castle he simulates a series of photorealistic imaginary edits. By setting up the image at a similar position where the picture was taken, he suggests an alternative reality for the caste. This piece is also the starting point of an in-situ installation he plans to build next year. Artist Lodewijk Heylen has a similar authentic vs artificial approach but uses the medium of sculpting. His sculpture Übermenschlich: Diestiaan consists out of an artificial reconstruction of iron sandstone that was used as raw material in the building of the castle. He thought up a process by which iron grains go through the process of oxidation and fossilization faster. By doing so, his setup demonstrates the full cycle of the origination of the raw material all the way to its usage in the castle. Video artist Alexandra Crouwers was fascinated by the decorative patterns she encountered in the stucco of the castle. Her video Rosetta shows a psychedelic video projection that is projected onto the castle tower during the festival, visually linking exterior and interior. With the work of sculptor and cabinet-maker Kaspar Hamacher and architectural collective 88888, the focus shifts from the castle to its surroundings. Kaspar Hamacher uses a fallen tree he found on the site. Using an intensive treatment process, he was able to transform part of it into a fascinating black sculpture. The architects of make a subtle and abstract incision in the face of the water. An estranging intervention that interrupts the continuity of the water and responds to the experience of walking around the castle s pond. Next to the installations that use the spatial context as a starting [15] EN

10 point, there is also work on display that clearly connects to the music festival. One of the eye catchers is the Castra pavillion by Robbrecht en Daem architecten i.c.w. Mouton that will be used as a second stage during the festival weekend. With simple architectural means they define elementary architecture that shelters and closes. The shell in translucent corrugated sheet captures and filters light, showing a deformed and suggestive image of what s going on inside. The artists of Children of the Light also make a link between visual arts and music festival by way of a scenographic intervention. The work connects music experience to spatial conditions and can be seen as an experiment with the format of a festival. And then, there s the work of writer Koen Sels and the duo Wim Goossens and Arnaud Hendrickx. Koen Sels was invited to design a neon sculpture that will be on display at the waterfront, with the green tree line as its backdrop. Sels was asked to tackle the challenge of handling two problematic genres: that of neon art and that of poetry in the public domain and looked for ways to go beyond their clichés. Wim Goossens [16] and Arnaud Hendrickx used the Isopleth installation that they made for the previous edition as a starting point: the first result of a long term collaboration. [17] EN

11 [18] Overzicht van de kunstwerken Uit de verschillende voorstellen van de kunstenaars komen zeer diverse strategieën naar voren om met de plek om te gaan, steeds vanuit de eigenheid van het oeuvre van de kunstenaar. Filip Dujardin, bekend van zijn surrealistische fotomontages, creeert een impossible reality. Op het romantische postkaartbeeld van het kasteel simuleert hij een reeks fotorealistische fictieve ingrepen. Door het beeld op te stellen op een positie van waar de foto werd genomen, suggereert hij de mogelijkheid van een nieuwe werkelijkheid voor het kasteel. Dit werk is de aanzet voor een in-situ installatie die op de volgende editie wordt gerealiseerd. Kunstenaar Lodewijk Heylen werkt op een vergelijkbaar register van authentiek versus artificieel, maar hanteert het medium van de beeldhouwkunst. Zijn sculptuur Übermenschlich: Diestiaan bestaat uit een artificiële reconstructie van een ijzerzandsteen die als bouwmateriaal werd gebruikt in het kasteel. Daarvoor bedacht hij een procedé waarbij ijzerkorrels het proces van verroesten en verstenen versneld doormaken. Zijn opstelling toont op die manier de volledig keten van de totstandkoming van de natuurlijke grondstof tot en met de verwerking ervan in het kasteel. Videokun-stenares Alexandra Crouwers was op haar beurt gefascineerd door de decoratieve patronen die ze aantrof in het stucwerk van het kasteel. De video Rosetta toont een psychedelische videoprojectie die tijdens het festival zal geprojecteerd worden op de kasteeltoren en die een visuele link legt tussen exterieur en interieur. Met het werk van beeldhouwer en meubelmaker Kaspar Hamacher en architectencollectief 88888, verschuift de focus van het kasteel naar zijn omgeving. Kaspar Hamacher vond een omgevallen boom op de site die hij via een intensief proces transformeerde tot een fascinerende, gitzwarte sculptuur die voor hem de exploitatie van de natuur door [19] NL

12 de mens symboliseert. De architecten van maken een subtiele en abstracte incisie in het watervlak. Een bevreemdende interventie die de continuïteit van het water onderbreekt en inspeelt op de ervaring van de wandeling langs de kasteelvijver. Naast de installaties die vertrekken van de ruimtelijke context, wordt er ook in-situ werk getoond dat brug maakt met het muziekfestival. Eén van de blikvangers is het paviljoen Castra van Robbrecht en Daem architecten i.s.m. Mouton dat tijdens het festivalweekend als tweede podium wordt gebruikt. Met eenvoudige architectonische middelen definiëren zij elementaire architectuur die beschut en afsluit. De schil in translucente golfplaat capteert en filtert licht en toont een vervormd en suggestief beeld van wat zich binnenin afspeelt. Ook kunstenaars Children of the Light maken de brug tussen beeldende kunst en festival door middel van een voor HORST ontworpen scenografische interventie. De werken verbinden de beleving van muziek aan de beleving van ruimte en kunnen beschouwd worden als experimenten met het format van een festival. Tot slot is er het werk van schrijver Koen [20] Sels en duo Wim Goossens en Arnaud Hendrickx. Koen Sels werd uitgenodigd om een neonsculptuur te bedenken die getoond wordt aan de rand van de kasteelvijver, tegen de achtergrond van het groene bomenfront. Sels werd uitgedaagd om te gaan met twee problematische genres: die van de neonkunst en die van de poëzie in publieke ruimte. Hij zoekt naar een manier om aan hun clichés te ontsnappen. Wim Goossens en Arnaud Hendrickx vertrekken van de installatie Isopleth die ze op de vorige editie maakten en denken daarop verder. Meteen het eerste resultaat van een editie-overschrijdende samenwerking. [21] NL

13 Artists 1 Robbrecht en Daem architecten i.c.w. Mouton Castra is an inviting ring-shaped pavilion that creates expectation. The outer layer, made out of translucent corrugated sheet, captures and filters the light and shows a distorted and suggestive image of the inside. Using simple architectonic features, the lustrous and blurry halo defines elementary architecture that covers and seals. In the context of landscape and castle, it makes you wonder about the actual determination of the site, relating to fencing and covering, but also about the more precariously option of embowering. As delimited pavilion in a green environment, the sculpture can also be used as intimate dance floor that creates fascinating interaction between spectator and artist. Since 1975, Ghent based duo Robbrecht en Daem architecten has been producing work that implies a constant relationship between architectural design and the visual or performing arts. Their architecture takes an outspoken contemporary and humane position that always expresses their inner personalities and relates to the wider cultural context of science and art. 14 2 Filip Dujardin Before/After is a provocative digital reconstruction of the Horst castle. Placing the image on the exact spot where it was taken, it manipulates both time and space and renders a radically new and fascinating view on the well-known, picturesque and romantic image of the castle and its green backdrop. This impossible reality of the castle can be seen as the precursor of the installation Dujardin is planning to build next year. Filip Dujardin (1971) lives and works in Ghent. He operates in and between the disciplines of architectural photography, visual arts and large scale installations. Capturing, deconstructing and reconstructing fragments of architecture and landscape, he creates impossible realities. 3 Lodewijk Heylen Übermenschlich: Diestiaan shows a natural object and its replica. Artificially duplicating the ironstone that is found in the Hageland region, called Diestiaan, the work refers to the industrial and cultural heritage of the area. At the same time, it exposes the industrial, manufactured world, exploring the idea of a feasible earth. Located in the middle of the domain, the ochre, rust-coloured objects lie brotherly as a pair, directly connected to the ground and their surroundings. Lodewijk Heylen (1989) lives and works in Turnhout and Berlin. As a visual and contextual artist, fascinated by the human urge to imitate, improve or harness the forces of nature, he uses existing materials and formats to construct large scale installations that transpose between the natural and the artificial. 15 4 Kaspar Hamacher A fallen tree near the castle is the starting point of Black Tree. The work reads like a sculpture, but is accessible for the public. With branches that have a horizontally cut surface at the bottom, the stem is able to find stability in an elegant and fragile way. The remarkable appearance is the result of a special treatment process whereby the bark and the outer wood layer are removed to burn and oil the tree. At the banks of the pond one can find a penetrating, coalblack sculpture that stands out against the green environment and calls up all sorts of associations s untitled intervention is situated in the water surrounding the castle. The rectangular shaped excision borders on the water surface and forms an abstract interruption in the water, suggesting an unphatomable depth. It feels like an unnatural, almost impossible gesture of which construction and materiality are unclear, surrounded by the natural, indifferent dynamics of water and wind is a collaboration between Karel Burssens (1984) and Jeroen Verrecht (1984). They share a general interest in spatial conditions which they establish in a practice of installation art, scenography, architecture and photography. With nature as his starting point, Kaspar Hamacher (1981) focuses on physical rather than conceptual design and considers himself a craftsman rather than a designer. While exploring the limits of his material, he looks for authenticity in every step of his work process. In doing so he sublimates craftsmanship and art into poetic industrial design. 16 6 Alexandra Crouwers Rosetta is a video installation inspired by the castle s decorative patterns. The 3D-animated projection shows a seamless animation loop based on the ornamental 17 th century ceilings of the castle s interior. Like a psychedelic moving super-ornament it lights up against the background, creating depth and the illusion of a hologram. During the festival Rosetta is projected on the outside of the castle wall. Later, the work will be installed on the inside of the castle and projected above one of the antique fireplaces. Alexandra Crouwers (1974) is a visual artist living and working in Antwerp and the Netherlands. Primarily using digital (3D) animation and video post production, her work mainly focuses on the concept of time. Her multi layered films alter the viewer s perception of the fourth dimension and captivate with their otherworldly darkness. 7 Koen Sels Kdrrssjt is a stuttering, dadaesque neon sign that tries to say the only right thing by avoiding the weightiness a word attracts when isolated in space. It tragicomically aims at the nonsensical and anti-poetic in order to retain a sense of meaning and poetry. Kdrrssjt doesn t mean anything, but it could very well be a comic book sound depicting the work s failed attempt to say the most meaningful thing possible: an infinite stutter, a crashing (language) machine. Quoting a non-word that in its original context a piece of fiction described the sound of a slow motion fist bump, it tries to save the idea of poetry by being overtly anti-poetic. Dada being an important frame of reference, the work also has an apocalyptic undertone. It is infinitely about to crash into the water, a cartoon comet nearly crashing into a context that is, in some way, looking for a tabula rasa. Koen Sels (1982) is a writer and an editor for the literary magazine *ny*. He has written fiction, reviews, essays and other kinds of texts for several (artist) publications. His first novel, *Generator*, will be published in October. [28] ARTISTS [29] EN

17 8 Children of the Light Diapositive is all about light and darkness. Super bright daylight LEDs are mounted and directed both in- and outwards on a rotating black metal frame. The animated light illuminates smoke and creates shapes in the air. As it continually transforms, the image is brought to life. Viewers can not only walk around it and see it from different perspectives, they will also have the feeling they can touch the image: with strong bright shapes, the dark parts function as black holes, resulting in an almost tactile darkness. The hypnotic sensation that Children of Light bring about, is a continuation of their research into treating light as matter. Children of the Light is the collaboration of Amsterdambased visual artists Christopher Gabriel (1980, Oslo) and Arnout Hulskamp (1978, Amsterdam). Using decor, light, haze, reflections and animations, the duo tends to entrance and mystify the public with abstract and highly spherical scenographies and installations 9 Wim Goossens & Arnaud Hendrickx Lux@580nM consists of two parts: Lux major, a highway lighting pole placed in the pond, and Lux minor, a concrete model with a small scale version of the same lighting pole. Both parts of the work refer to each other. While the experience of the yellow light of sodium lamps and its interaction with the water surface, is permanently present in Lux Major, in Lux minor it will only be experienced on a small scale after a rain shower. The alienating scale and proportion of the lighting pole Lux major presents, is represented in Lux minor. Arnaud Hendrickx (1970) and Wim Goossens (1975) both work as architects/researchers at the department of Architecture KULeuven and teach at the faculty of Architecture LUCA school of Arts (KULeuven). They share an academic practice with a focus on the spatial affect in architecture on the one hand and the potentiality of curating knowledge production in architecture on the other. 21 Kunstenaars 1 Robbrecht en Daem architecten i.s.m. Mouton Castra is een ringvormig paviljoen dat uitnodigt en verwachting uitstraalt. De schil in doorschijnende golfplaat capteert en filtert licht en toont een vervormd en suggestief beeld van wat zich binnenin afspeelt. De schitterende en wazige halo definieert met eenvoudige architectonische middelen elementaire architectuur die beschut en afsluit. In de context van landschap en kasteel, stemt het tot nadenken over de daadwerkelijke bepaling van de site die over omheining en overwelving gaat, maar ook over de meer precaire mogelijkheid van omhulling. Als afgebakend paviljoen tussen het groen leent de sculptuur zich ook tot intieme dansvloer waar een fascinerende interactie tussen toeschouwer en artiest ontstaat. Sinds 1975 heeft het in Gent gevestigde duo Robbrecht en Daem architecten werk gemaakt dat een voortdurende relatie inhoudt tussen architecturaal ontwerp en de visuele en dramatische kunsten. Hun architectuur neemt een uitgesproken hedendaagse en menselijke positie in die steeds hun persoonlijkheid uitdrukt en zich verhoudt tot de brede culturele context van wetenschap en kunst. 22 2 Filip Dujardin Before/After is een provocatieve digitale reconstructie van het kasteel van Horst. Door het beeld op te stellen op de positie vanwaar de foto werd genomen, manipuleert het tijd en ruimte en genereert het een radicaal nieuwe en fascinerende kijk op het gekende, pittoreske and romantische beeld van het kasteel in een groen kader. Deze onmogelijke realiteit van het kasteel kan beschouwd worden als een proloog op de installatie die Dujardin volgend jaar zal bouwen. Filip Dujardin (1971) woont en werkt in Gent. Hij opereert in en tussen de disciplines van architectuurfotografie, beeldende kunst en grootschalige installaties. Door het vastleggen, deconstrueren en reconstrueren van architecturale en landschapsfragmenten, creëert hij onmogelijke realiteiten. 3 Lodewijk Heylen Übermenschlich: Diestiaan toont een natuurlijk object en een replica ervan. Door op een artificiële manier ijzerzandsteen te reconstrueren, verwijst de sculptuur naar de letterlijke bouwstenen van het kasteel die in het Hageland rijkelijk aanwezig zijn onder de naam Diestiaan. Naast het industriële en culturele erfgoed van de streek, maakt het werk ook de industriële, vervaardigde wereld tot onderwerp. Door het gebruikte procedé waarbij ijzerkorrels het proces van verroesten en verstenen versneld doormaken, wordt de idee van een maakbare aarde verkend. Lodewijk Heylen (1989) woont en werkt in Turnhout en Berlijn. Als visuele en contextuele kunstenaar die gefascineerd is door de menselijke drang om de natuurkrachten te imiteren, te verbeteren en te temmen, maakt hij gebruik van bestaande materialen om grootschalige installaties te bouwen die schipperen tussen het natuurlijke en het artificiële. 23 4 Kaspar Hamacher Een omgevallen eik in de buurt van het kasteel vormt de basis van Black Tree. Het werk leest als een sculptuur, maar je kan de boom ook gebruiken en betreden. Met takken die aan de onderzijde volgens een horizontaal vlak afgesneden zijn, vindt de stam op een elegante en fragiele manier stabiliteit. De opvallende verschijning is het resultaat van een apart bewerkingsproces waarbij de schors en de buitenste houtlaag verwijderd werden om de boom te verbranden en te oliën. Aan de oever ligt nu een doordringende, gitzwarte sculptuur die op een afgetekende manier contrasteert met de groene omgeving en heel wat associaties oproept De tittelloze interventie van situeert zich in de kasteelvijver. Het is een abstracte uitsnede in het water die op een abrupte manier het watervlak onderbreekt en een onpeilbare diepte suggereert voor de toeschouwers aan de oever. Een onnatuurlijk, bijna onmogelijk gebaar, waarvan constructie en materialisering onduidelijk blijven, omgeven door een natuurlijke, nagenoeg onverschillige dynamiek van water en wind is een samenwerking tussen Karel Burssens (1984) en Jeroen Verrecht (1984). Beiden delen ze een interesse voor ruimtelijke constellaties die ze in de praktijk brengen met kunstinstallaties, scenografie, architectuur en fotografie. Met de natuur als basis kiest Kaspar Hamacher (1981) resoluut voor fysiek, eerder dan conceptueel ontwerp. Meer ambachtsman dan designer, tast hij de limieten van het materiaal af. Of het nu een boomstronk of een stuk leer is, het gaat hem steeds om authenticiteit in elke schakel van zijn ontwerpproces. Daarbij sublimeert hij ambacht en kunst tot poëtisch industrieel design. 24 6 Alexandra Crouwers Rosetta is een video-installatie die geïnspireerd is door de decoratieve patronen van het kasteel. De geanimeerde 3D projectie laat een naadloze animatie-loop zien die gebaseerd is op de sierlijke zeventiende-eeuwse plafonds die het kasteelinterieur rijk is. Als een bewegend psychedelisch superornament licht het op tegen de achtergrond en creëert het diepte en de illusie van een hologram. Tijdens het festival wordt Rosetta aan de buitenkant van de kasteelmuur geprojecteerd. Later wordt het werk binnen in het kasteel geïnstalleerd en geprojecteerd boven een van de antieke schouwen. Alexandra Crouwers (1974) is een beeldende kunstenaar die woont en werkt in Antwerpen en Nederland. Ze maakt vooral gebruik van digitale (3D) animatie en video post-productie en haar werk focust hoofdzakelijk op het concept tijd. Haar meerlagige films veranderen de perceptie die de kijker heeft van de vierde dimensie en beklijven door hun bevreemdende duisternis. 7 Koen Sels Kdrrssjt is een stotterende, dadaïstische neon die het enige juiste tracht te zeggen door de gewichtigheid van een geïsoleerd woord te vermijden. Op een tragikomische manier mikt het op het nonsensicale en antipoëtische om een gevoel van betekenis en poëzie te bewaren. Kdrrssjt betekent niets, maar zou zomaar het geluid uit een stripverhaal kunnen zijn dat de mislukte poging van het werk omschrijft om het meest betekenisvolle te zeggen dat er is: een eindeloze stotter, een vastlopende (taal) machine. Door een non-woord te citeren dat in zijn oorspronkelijke context een fictief verhaal het geluid beschreef van een vuistslag in slow motion, probeert het de poëticale notie te redden door onomwonden anti-poëtisch te zijn. Koen Sels (1982) is schrijver en redacteur voor het literaire magazine *ny*. Hij schreef eerder al fictie, recensies, essays en andere soorten teksten voor verschillende (artistieke) publicaties. 25 8 Children of Light Diapositive gaat over licht en donkerte. Superheldere daglicht-leds zijn bevestigd aan een zwart- metalen ronddraaiende cirkel en staan zowel naar binnen als naar buiten gericht. Omdat het animerende licht rook zichtbaar maakt, creëert het vormen in de lucht. Door haar voortdurende transformatie, wordt het beeld tot leven gebracht. Toeschouwers kunnen er niet alleen rond wandelen en het vanuit verschillende hoeken bekijken, ze zullen ook het gevoel hebben dat ze het beeld kunnen aanraken: de wisselwerking tussen de extreem helder oplichtende vormen en de onverlichte delen, resulteert in zwarte gaten die je als een bijna tactiele donkerte ervaart. De hypnotiserende sensatie die Children of Light daarmee tot stand brengen is een voortzetting van hun onderzoek naar het gebruik van licht als materiaal. Children of the Light is de samenwerking tussen Christopher Gabriel (1980, Oslo) en Arnout Hulskamp ( 1978, Amsterdam). Door het gebruik van decor, licht, rook, reflecties en animaties durven ze het publiek in trance te brengen met abstracte en zeer sferische scenografieën en installaties. 9 Wim Goossens & Arnaud Hendrickx Lux@580nM bestaat uit twee componenten: Lux major, een verlichtingsarmatuur voor een autostrade die in de kasteelvijver is geplaatst, en Lux minor, een betonnen maquette met een kleine schaalversie van diezelfde verlichtingspaal. Beide elementen van het werk refereren naar elkaar: terwijl de beleving van het gele licht van de natriumlampen en de interactie daarvan met het wateroppervlak in Lux major op grote schaal permanent aanwezig is, valt die in Lux minor enkel op verkleinde schaal te ervaren na een regenbui. De vervreemdende schaalverhouding van de autostradeverlichting die Lux major presenteert, wordt op die manier gerepresenteerd in Lux minor. Arnaud Hendrickx (1970) en Wim Goossens (1975) zijn beiden actief als architect, onderzoeker en docent aan de campus Sint Lucas van faculteit architectuur van de KULeuven. Ze ontwikkelden hier een ontwerpmatige academische praktijk met een focus op het ruimtelijk affect in architectuur enerzijds en de potentie van cureren als een vorm van kennisproductie in architectuur anderzijds.
