2 6 7 #1 #1 In 1989 verscheen het eerste nummer van het in eigen beheer uitgegeven kunsttijdschrift Het heeft tot doel collega-kunstenaars een podium te verschaffen. Daarnaast dient het soms als toelichting bij een van mijn exposities. En sommige nummers zijn een reactie op een actualiteit, zoals nummer 10, waarin ik mijn aquarel-collages die ik maakte in de herfst van 2001 als reactie op 9/11 New York, bijeen heb gebracht. Recent was nummer 14 een toelichting op de expositie Mapping out Paradise met Claudy Jongstra in De Pont, museum voor hedendaagse kunst te Tilburg. Het was een zeer snel gemaakte uitgave, meteen na de opening, met als doel een uitleg van de installatie, omdat al in de eerste dagen van de expositie bleek dat veel bezoekers vragen hadden over symbolen in de installatie. Naast dit tijdschrift wordt er nu in eigen beheer een serie cahiers uitgegeven, waarin thema s en technieken van de laatste decennia gearchiveerd worden. Het eerste cahier handelt over glas. Hierna volgt er een uitgave over mijn modelabel Stop Bleeding (i.s.m. Diane Schouten), een uitgave over alle politiek-religieuze aquarelcollages, en een uitgave over alle in de loop der tijd gemaakte portret- en atelierfoto s van collega s en vrienden. In 1989, the first issue of my privately published art magazine - 100,000,000 - was published. Its purpose is to provide fellow artists a media platform. At times it also provides explanatory notes to one of my own exhibitions. In addition, some issues were published in response to contemporary events, such as number 10, which featured a collection of the watercolour collages which I made in the autumn of 2001 in response to 9/11 New York. More recently, number 14 provided explanatory notes to the exhibition - Mapping out Paradise - together with Claudy Jongstra in the De Pont Museum of Contemporary Art in Tilburg. The issue was put together very quickly, immediately after the opening of the exhibition, and was intended to explain the installation, as it immediately became apparent during the first few days after the opening that a great many visitors had questions about the symbols in the installation. In addition to this magazine a series of separate issues are being published under our own private label, in which themes and techniques from the last several decades are being archived. The first issue is devoted to glass. This will be followed by an issue about my fashion brand Stop Bleeding (together with Diane Schouten), an issue devoted to political/religious watercolour collages, and an issue about all the portrait and atelier photographs by colleagues and friends. Het eerste Archive geeft een overzicht van de glas-in - loodramen en van andere glaswerken, alle vervaardigd in het Glasbewerkingsbedrijf Brabant (GBB) te Tilburg. Daar is de liefde voor dit eeuwenoude ambacht nog springlevend. Daar mogen kunstenaars samen met de ambachtslieden aan deze dragers van het licht werken.mijn grote dank gaat dan ook uit naar Frank Coolen, Ad van de Hoven en Peggy Hermans voor hun creatieve adviezen en begeleiding, naar Willem van der Eerden voor de technische ondersteuning en naar Marcelo Garrido Ayala, de meester-snijder die voor mij de meest onmogelijke vormen glas weet te bevrijden uit de glasplaat. Een speciaal woord van dank gaat uit naar Carlo Storimans, zeefdrukker van al het fotowerk op glas; hij was het die mij in contact bracht met de wereld van het glasblazen. In alle ramen is gebruik gemaakt van zowel mond geblazen antiek glas, als machinaal vervaardigd stuctuurglas glas. Ze zijn beschilderd met le- en grisailleverf. De vazen en schalen zijn geblazen in de glasblazerij te Leerdam door de meester blazers Henk Verweij, Marinke van Zandwijk en Marek Effmert. Vervolgens heb ik in het GBB bedrijf te Tilburg de le schildering aangebracht. GOD IS LICHT, en het valt een ieder ten deel. Marc Mulders The first such issue of Archives provides an overview of the stained glass windows and other glass pieces, all of which were manufactured in the glass processing company - Glasbewerkingsbedrijf Brabant (GBB) - in Tilburg. There, the love for this centuries-old craft is alive and well. Artists work side-by-side with skilled craftsmen to fashion these symbols of light. I am therefore greatly indebted to Frank Coolen, Ad van de Hoven and Peggy Hermans for their creative advice and guidance, to Willem van der Eerden for his technical support, and to Marcelo Garrido Ayala, the master cutter who has been able, at my request, to fashion the most impossible forms and figures from glass plates. A special word of thanks is owed to Carlo Storimans, the silkscreen printer of all the photographic work on glass. It was Carlo who brought me into contact with the world of glassblowing. All the windows are made using hand-blown antique glass as well as mechanically manufactured pieces of structural glass. They have been painted using enamel paint and grisaille paint. The vases and dishes were blown in the glassblowing facility in Leerdam by the master glassblowers Henk Verweij, Marinke van Zandwijk and Marek Effmert, after which I applied the enamel paints at the GBB company facilities in Tilburg. 6 14 15 rhoon 1 rhoon 1 Toelichting op de opdracht van het College van Kerkvoogden een gekleurd geschilderd glas in lood raam te maken voor de kerk in Rhoon. Explanatory notes on the commission received from the college of prelates to create a coloured and painted stained-glass window for the church in Rhoon. Anno 1999 is het voor mij nog immer zaak in geduld en lering beelden te houwen uit het licht, uit de lichtval en de schaduw, uit de wortel en de vacht van bloem en dier. Het is licht, diffuus licht, tegenlicht, de regenboog, wat mijn ultiem motief is. Dit alles toont zich in een manifestatie van de natuur; De dauwdruppels, het tegenlicht wordt zichtbaar op het gebladerte en de bloemen. Mijn motieven zijn dan ook van aanvang af het wild, de pioenroos in bloei en verval, hun geschapen stof. Als ik en het merg en de aderen van een herfstblad wil schilderen, zal de materie van olieverf moeten vervluch - tigen om het doorzichtig karakter van het gebladerte te kunnen tonen. Dat gebeurt door tijdens het schilderen (is corrigeren) hele foute passages weg te schrapen. De dan ontstane bodem vormt de ondergrond waarop het herfstblad geschilderd zal worden, echter met zo veel terpentinenat dat het blad nu met een aquarel-substantie boven op die ondergrond van zware olieverven rust. Doorschijnend licht wordt zo opgeroepen. Een vervolg zou zijn om op een ondergrond van gekleurd glas nu het doorschijnend licht zodanig tegen te houden, dat nerven en levenslijnen met kerven, lood en verf zich aftekenen. Mijn verlangen om een glas in lood te maken komt wezenlijk voort uit het hierboven beschreven samengaan van techniek en inhoud. (Reeds in 1991 schilderde ik op staande formaten van 240cm hoog vallend gebladerte met bovenin een cirkel met de centrifugerende kracht van nerven, stelen, stampers en bladeren, en noemde deze doeken dan ook Roosvenster. Dit jaar heb ik in de zomer In 1999, I am still occupied with patiently perfecting the art of creating sculptures from light, from the play of light and shadow, from the roots of plants and the skins of animals. Ultimately, the subject that preoccupies me is light in all its forms: diffuse light, backlight, rainbows of colours... All of this is manifested in the world of nature, as is evident from dewdrops lit up from the back and made visible on leaves and flowers. From the very beginning, I have found my subjects in the wild - in the peony as it flowers and decays and returns to the dust from which it was created. If I wish to paint the flesh as well as the veins of an autumn leaf, the oil paint which forms the material basis of the painting has to become somewhat volatile in order to depict the translucent nature of the leaf. This is realized by first scraping away the components that are not in harmony during the process of painting (i.e. correction). The resulting underground then forms the basis on which the autumn leaf will be painted. But this is done with the addition of so much white spirit that the leaf appears to be resting as an aquarelle film on top of the underlayer of heavy oil paints, creating an impression of transparent light. A follow-up to the above would be to filter out some of the light falling on a surface of coloured glass in such a way as to ensure that the veins and other vital lines are made visible with the help of incisions, lead and paint. My desire to create a stained-glass window is essentially based on the integration of technique and content described above (As early as 1991, I was making vertical paintings, 240 cm tall, of falling leaves with a circle on top representing een serie schilderijen gemaakt wederom met de titel Roosvenster. Deze schilderijen zijn voor mij een waardevolle opmaat voor deze glas in loodopdracht). Dit continu najagen van gebrandschilderd licht is een rode draad in mijn werk. Ik ben zeer gebiologeerd door het adembenemend lichaam van licht in Chartres. Zoals Bataille zegt dat wij niet meer de religieuze gesteldheid bezitten om waarlijke religieuze werken te scheppen, is het de kunstenaar nu niet meer mogelijk het getoonde realisme, waarmee de bijbel en het scheppingsverhaal verteld werden, te hanteren. In de jaren zestig hebben wij gemeend het geloof te kunnen heenzenden. Ik zie dan ook de hierboven beschreven motieven uit de natuur als scherven om dan toch een nieuwe ordening binnen het glas in lood te componeren, een begin. Het glas in lood te Rhoon zal als thema het scheppingsverhaal dragen, dus de elementen van water en dier zullen het licht dragen. In the summer of this year, I made a series of paintings which were again given the title of Rose Window. They are compilations of stains and spots of flesh and ascending roses. I also made paintings with the title Scarface and the subtitle rose window, in which the base layer depicts a tissue of scars as it were, serving as a background to irises and roses reaching upwards. For me, these paintings were a valuable exercise in preparing for this stained-glass commission). This continual search to capture and depict stained-glass light is a unifying theme throughout my work. I am very much fascinated by the breathtaking body of light which is visible in Chartres. Bataille has said that we no longer possess the religious mind needed to create truly religious works of art. Similarly, it is no longer possible for artists to create works in the realistic tradition in which the story of the Bible and creation were told. In the 1960s, it was even thought that we could dispense entirely with faith. I view the themes and patterns from nature referred to above as fragments which can be used to again try to create a new order within the realm of stained-glass art, a new beginning as it were. The stained-glass window in Rhoon will deal with the story of creation, whereby the water and animal elements will carry the light. Marc Mulders, 24 October 1999

7 16 17 rhoon 2 De dorpskerk van Rhoon uit 1430 heeft niet alleen een prachtig aangezicht, maar is zeker zo mooi van binnen. Hier wordt een prachtig binnenvallend licht gevangen gehouden, bewaard en gekoesterd. Het licht gaat spreken, het licht wordt taal. In de lente van 2000 heb ik in het koor, aan de zuidzijde, een zin in glas-in-lood mogen toevoegen, die spreekt over het scheppingsverhaal. Het is naar het zich nu laat aanzien, een geslaagde poging. De alom aanwezige vormen en attributen als de grote opengeslagen Bijbel, de preekstoel, het kleurig tapijt, de fonkelende kroonluchters en het barokke grafmonument hebben door dit raam een medestander gekregen. Echter door dit nieuwe glas-inloodraam is de kerk als het ware uit balans. Het lichaam aan licht binnenin mist als het ware zijn linkeroog. Het is wenslijk een nieuwe zin in glas-in-lood toe te voegen, recht tegenover dat van de schepping. Een raam waarin wederom het water verbeeld zal worden, echter nu niet als het scheppend leven schenkend water, maar een water dat al handelend optreedt in het verhaal van de Ark van Noach: het wassende water, bedreigend ook, maar voor anderen reinigend en hun redding; voor Noach en alle dierenparen. Marc Mulders, 25 september 2001 rhoon 2 The town church of Rhoon, dating from 1430, not only has a beautiful exterior. It is surely just as beautiful on the inside, where the light softly enters and is captured, retained and cherished. The light seems to find a voice here and speaks in many languages. In the spring of 2000, I had the privilege of making an addition to the chancel on the south side in the form of a sentence shaped in a stained-glass window, which deals with the story of creation. This new addition appears to have been a successful effort on my part. The various shapes and attributes which are present on all sides - including the large opened Bible, the pulpit, the colourful tapestry, the sparkling chandeliers, and the baroque memorial stone - have been given a companion in the form of this new window. However, this new stained glass window has also thrown the church out of balance, as it were. The body of light inside the church now seems to be missing its left eye. Accordingly, it would make sense to add a new sentence in the shape of a stained-glass window, right across from the story of creation. This second window would again depict water but, instead of the water of creation which gives life, it would depict water which plays a part in the story of Noah s ark: rising floodwaters which present a threat to some but are a cleansing source of salvation for others - for Noah and all the animal pairs. A Gesamtkunstwerk by Claudy Jongstra and Marc Mulders: some notes. Het idee voor de expositie werd geboren in het glasatelier van het GBB (Glas Bewerkingsbedrijf Brabant) bij het bezoek van Hendrik Driessen aan het glas-in-loodraam Het Laatste Oordeel -in wording- voor de Sint Jan Kathedraal te Den Bosch, november Driessen had eerder de wens uitgesproken t.z.t. een expositie te willen maken van de werken op papier. Ik stelde hem voor in plaats van de aquarellen te tonen, nu in glas een soort Guernica van de elfde september te maken voor de binnenruimte van het De Pont museum. Dit eerste (hoogmoedig) idee is uitgegroeid tot Mapping Out Paradise, een thema waar meer dan in het eerste idee ook plaats is voor de verbeelding van het goede naast het kwade. En het zegt ook meer over de droom, de wens en het verlangen de herinnering levend te houden aan dat Paradijs eens, om die verwoeste eenheid te herstellen. Daarnaast was er de wens om samen met Claudy Jongstra een vervolg te maken op de expositie Lusthof, waarvoor de Tilburgse school Piet Hein Eek en Claudy Jongstra uitnodigden voor de Art Rotterdam 2004 om samen een waarlijk lusthof te creëren. Deze expositie zal aansluiten op een aantal eerdere activiteiten van mij waarin kunst, politiek, religie en ambacht tezamen het verhaal vertellen: 1 De collages over 11/09 gemaakt in de herfst 2001 en gegroepeerd in mijn tijdschrift nummer Het glas-in-loodraam de Apocalypse voor het museum Catherijneconvent te Utrecht The idea for the exhibition was born in the glass workshop of the GBB ( Glas Bewerkingsbedrijf Brabant ) during the visit made by Mr. Hendrik Driessen in November 2006 to the stained-glass window The Last Judgment. This piece was in the process of being created for the St. John s Cathedral in Den Bosch. Mr. Driessen had previously expressed a wish to present an exhibition, when the time was ripe, of these works on paper. Instead of exhibiting the aquarelles, I proposed creating a kind of Guernica of 11 September for the inner space of the De Pont museum. This initial (rather brazen) idea developed into Mapping Out Paradise, a theme which, more than the initial idea, makes it possible to represent good alongside evil. Next to this, it focuses much more on the dream, the desire and the longing to keep the memory alive of that Paradise in order to someday restore the unity which was shattered. In addition, I wished to work together with Claudy Jongstra to create a follow-up to the Garden of Eden exhibition. The latter was the result of an invitation given by the Tilburg School to Piet Hein Eek and Claudy Jongstra to work together to create a true Garden of Eden for Art Rotterdam This exhibition is also a logical follow-up to several of my previous activities in which art, politics, religion and traditional craftsmanship are all used to tell a story: 1 The collages focusing on 11/09 made in the autumn of 2001 and grouped under number 10 in my magazine 100,000, Het glas-in-loodraam voor de Sint Jan Kathedraal te Den Bosch De expositie Liturgie en Typografie in het Van Abbe Museum En op de wens, missie zogezegd, om Jezus en Maria weer onder de mensen te brengen via o.m. ons modelabel Stop Bleeding (Diane Schouten en Marc Mulders, opgericht in 2005 te Tilburg, een stad waar van oudsher het katholicisme en het textiel- en glas-in-loodambacht dominante factoren waren. Stop Bleeding werkt vanuit deze geestelijke en picturale erfenis. Het wil een alledaags gebruiksvoorwerp als een tas versieren met elementen en herinneringen aan deze erfenis, niet om weemoedig om te kijken, maar juist vooruit te kijken, door te pogen een feestelijkheid hand in hand met een symboliek of herinnering aan dit gedachtegoed in borduursel of print op een kledingstuk de wereld in te sturen. Een voorbeeld hiervan zijn de tassen met daarop een vis geborduurd, waarbij binnen in de buik een afbeelding van Maria is te ontwaren. De vis fungeert dan a.h.w als. een schuilkerk, als een Ark van Noach; een waardevol teken wordt zo gekoesterd en herinnerd, bewaard voor betere tijden. 2 The stained-glass window the Apocalypse for the Catherijneconvent Museum in Utrecht The stained-glass window for the St. John s Cathedral in Den Bosch The exhibition Liturgy and Typography in the Van Abbe Museum The wish, i.e. mission, to bring Jesus and Mary down to earth for everyone, for example via our fashion label Stop Bleeding (Diane Schouten and Marc Mulders, established in 2005 in Tilburg, a city where Catholicism as well as the textile and stained-glass window trades were traditionally the dominant influences. Stop Bleeding works on the basis of this spiritual and traditional crafts-related heritage. It takes a day-to-day object such as a handbag and decorates it with elements and reminders of this heritage, not with the intention of looking nostalgically backwards in time but rather of looking forward to the future by attaching a woven or printed symbol of this heritage and bringing it into the public domain. An example of this is the handbag displaying an embroidered fish, inside of which an image of the Virgin Mary is visible. The fish here functions as a place of refuge or Noah s Ark. In this way, a valuable symbol is cherished and its memory is preserved for better days to come.

9 20 mapping out paradise 6 In Mapping Out Paradise komen meerdere ambachten technieken en disciplines samen: textiel, glas-in-lood, en zeefdruk. In Mapping Out Paradise, various traditional skills, crafts and disciplines are combined, including the textile, leaded glass and silkscreen printing crafts. VILT De vilten gewaden van Claudy Jongstra gedragen zich a.h.w. als herfstbladeren doordat wol, zijde en de bewerking met plantaardige verfstoffen doorademen in nerf en textuur. Stof wordt in haar handen een kleed. En wol en zijde vervilt een taal die spreekt over stoffelijkheid en uitnodigt tot aanraken, niet als een tasten in het duister, maar juist een tasten aan het licht. Net als het herfstblad kleurt de zon het met plantaardige verfstoffen bewerkte vilt het kleed verder. GEBRANDSCHILDERD GLAS Vanuit de wereld van galerie en museum heb ik de laatste jaren (m.n. voor de protstantse) Kerk ramen mogen maken. Nu neem ik het glas-in-loodraam a.h.w. weer mee terug naar het museum alwaar ik het ontmantel, breek en verstrooi. En zo een onderwereld voor de bovenwereld, de vilt stromen creëer. INHOUD De beelden in Mapping Out Paradise zullen uitgaan van enerzijds de klassieke Bijbelse iconografie van het paradijs, goed en kwaad bijeen op een en hetzelfde grondgebied, en zijn anderzijds een verwijzing naar het nu: de hel op aarde nu, zoals die bijvoorbeeld ervaren werd door de 9/11-attack, decadentie en hedonisme om ons heen. Zo heeft het glas-in-loodraam de Apocalypse te Utrecht, naast het uitbeelden van heel specifiek hoofdstuk 12 uit de Openbaring van Johannes, tevens een element van het Laatste Oordeel NU, namelijk een eigentijds Apocalypse now -scenario, met dit maal geheel nieuwe acteurs als kruisvaarders; zowel de terroristen als ook de George Bushpresidenten... En er is in het glas-in-loodraam Het laatste oordeel in de Sint Jan Kathedraal te s-hertogenbosch naast de klassieke helse Jeroen Bosch taferelen ook een nine eleven citaat afgebeeld in de hellemuil. FELT The felt-like garments created by Claudy Jongstra behave more or less like autumn leaves, as her use of wool, silk and vegetable dyes breathes life into the grain and texture of the garment. In her hands, material is transformed into a garment. The wool and silk used by her speak a language devoted to the tangible and physical aspects of reality. They invite you to touch them, not as you would reach for something in the dark but rather as you would reach for something in the light. Like autumn leaves lit by the sun, the vegetable dyes in the felt garments are further transformed and coloured by the sunlight. STAINED GLASS In recent years, after spending a great deal of time in the world of galleries and museums, I have been privileged to create windows for (primarily Protestant) churches. Now I am taking the stained-glass window back into the museum, as it were, where I take it apart, break it and scatter it. And in doing so, I make the subterranean world visible to the world above. CONTENTS On the one hand, the images in Mapping Out Paradise will be based on the classical biblical iconography of Paradise, where good and evil are present in the same place. On the other hand, they will point to the present, to hell on earth as we know it, as embodied by the 9/11 attack and the decadence and hedonism all around us. The stained-glass window The Apocalypse in Utrecht, for example, not only specifically illustrates Chapter 12 of the Revelation of John; it also contains an element of the Last Judgment NOW, namely a modern Apocalypse now scenario, inhabited by entirely new actors playing the role of crusaders: the terrorists as well as the George Bush presidents... And, in Mapping Paradise zal gaan over de afwezigheid van geloof, utopie en troost... Maar elk herstel, elk begin, begint bij de herinnering aan... Nu blijkt dat het modernisme met een van haar belangrijkste leerstellingen oftewel dogma s, nl. het immer willen doorbreken van taboes, heeft bijgedragen aan een desolaat geestelijk landschap, is het nu zaak voor de kunstenaar de brokstukken bijeen te rapen, taboes te gaan helen en te beginnen met een nieuwe maquette, rekwisieten, décor van het paradijs. De vilten gewaden zullen worden uitgevoerd in verzadigde, zgn. Rothko-tonen tinten, van voornamelijk violet roden oranje en witten. addition to the classical Jeroen Bosch type scenes of hell, the stained-glass window The Last Judgment in the St. John s Cathedral in s-hertogenbosch displays a 9/11 quotation in the jaws of hell. Mapping Out Paradise will be about the absence of faith, utopia and consolation... But every restoration, every new beginning starts with a memory of... Now that it has become evident that modernism, via one of its most important concepts or dogmas, namely the wish to continually overthrow taboos, has contributed to the creation of a spiritual wasteland, the time has come for artists to start picking up the pieces, to heal the rifts caused by broken taboos and to create a new decor (with appropriate props and scenery) for Paradise. The felt garments will be created in saturated so-called Rothko tone tints, consisting primarily of violets, reds, oranges and whites.

10 22 mapping out paradise 23 aantekeningen Notes Het paradijs is allereerst een gevaarloze tuin voor de zondeloze mens. Maar hier toont het gebrandschilderd glas de tuin nadat de zonde is begaan. En is a.h.w. een grote kronkelende slang. Het bestaat uit vier lange stromen van gebrandschilderd glas en elf dieren. En boven deze lage wereld verheft het vilt zich. Het vilt laat de blik omhoog, Hemelwaarts gaan. Originally, Paradise was a garden free of any danger for man in his innocence. But here the stained-glass depicts the garden after the fall of man, in the form of a large twisting snake, as it were, consisting of four long flowing sections of stained-glass and eleven animals. And above this lower world, the felt elements rise upwards with their gaze fixed on Heaven. In deze tweedeling in de lage en de hoge wereld is echter ook in het lage, verborgen in de muil of maag van de slang en Leviathan, (en in de foto s van alle bloemharten op de muur) de stroom uit de zijdewond van Christus aan het kruis, als vruchtbaar en levenschenkend principe, als het gebaar van voorgaan in naastenliefde. De vier grote stromen die het Paradijs verdelen zijn de Pison, de Gihon(Ganges), de Hiddekel(Tigris) en de Eufraat. Echter in onze verbeelding van de Paradijstuin gaan die rivieren al gauw onderaards, omdat na de verleiding van Eva door de slang het water aan de bron al vergiftigd is, en daarmee nu misère en verderf op de oevers van de rivieren brengt. Onderaards staat hier ook symbool voor chaos, de stromen van glas verbeelden het kwade, de zondeval, dat wat laag ligt aan onze voeten, terwijl het vilt met haar verticale stromen zich omhoog, hemelwaarts richt. Het verbeeldt het uit de hemel vallend stromend regenwater dat leven-schenkend is. But within this overall division into the lower and the upper world, we see in the lower world, hidden in the jaws or belly of the snake and Leviathan (and in the photographs of all the flower hearts on the wall), the stream flowing from the wound in the side of Christ on the cross as a nourishing and creative force, as a gesture of one who leads by showing brotherly love. The four major streams dividing Paradise are the Pison, the Gihon (Ganges), the Hiddekel (Tigris) and the Euphrates. Here they are depicted in four flowing stained-glass sections: 1 magnolia branches 2 thorn branches 3 ferns 4 fossils These symbolize the four rivers which flow from their source in Paradise and make the riverbanks fruitful. However, in our depiction of the Garden of Eden, the rivers quickly go underground, since soon after the snake seduced Eve, the water from the source became poisoned and brought misery and destruction alongside the banks of the rivers. Here the Underground is also a symbol of chaos. The flowing sections of glass symbolize evil, the fall of man, and that which lies low beneath our feet. In contrast, the vertical flows of the felt elements point upwards towards Heaven. As such, they symbolize the rain which flows and falls from heaven, giving life on earth. Daarin is hij een toonbeeld van de huichelaar. Is de zwaan van zijn witte gevederte ontdaan dan wordt zijn zwarte vlees in het vuur geroosterd. Zo wordt ook de huichelaar bij zijn dood van alle wereldlijke praal ontdaan en daalt hij af in het vuur van de hel. In de buik van de zwanen zijn beelden te zien van het nachtmerriescenario te Irak... Een foto toont een Irakees die een masker van president Bush in het vuur gooit. In the belly of the beast there is a silkscreen print with a picture of 9/11: a fireman praying at Ground Zero 2 Jellyfish, the ghost... 3 Swan In the medieval animal books (bestiaria), the flesh of the swan beneath its white dress of feathers is black, which is why the swan stands for the hypocrite. After its white feathers have been removed, its black flesh is roasted in the fire. Similarly, upon his death, the hypocrite is also deprived of all his worldly splendour and descends into hell-fire. In the belly of the swans, pictures can be seen of the nightmare scenario in Iraq. One picture shows an Iraqi throwing a mask of President Bush into the fire: Bush as the new crusader/ fundamentalist who speaks just like the terrorists he is fighting: I have God on my side. 4 Snake Symbol of evil, the snake in the tree of Paradise tempts Eve to disobey and is the cause of the fall of man.

Lucretia echter zei: Ik bevrijd mij niet van straf, geen zedeloze vrouw zal voortaan in leven blijven met een beroep op het voorbeeld van Lucretia, en stak vervolgens een dolk in haar hart. In de scherpe snavel staat Lucretia gegraveerd. Deze vogel verwijst naar dat mechanisme van kwaad waarbij het slachtoffer het geweld niet met vergeving maar met geweld beantwoord. The Stork refers to Christ and his disciples who resisted the devil. 8 Walrus 9 St. John bird 10 Leviathan The Leviathan is a biblical monster in the form of a writhing sea snake. In apocalyptical writings, the devil is represented by the Leviathan. His jaws are called the gates of hell, and at the end of times he will fight the last great battle with Archangel Gabriel. From the four mouths of the stained-glass Leviathan, the river again flows four times. Four times, the water and blood flow from the wound in the side of Christ leaving the jaws of the supine monster. In contrast, the flowing suspended felt sections and the stamens and pistils bending downwards in the flower hearts on the wall, from which the side wound flows, symbolize that which is higher, conquering that which is lower, the crawling snake of evil. 11 Lucretia bird Lucretia was raped by Tarquinius. Her husband consoled her by assigning the guilt not to her who was raped but to he who committed the crime. The spirit, he said, sins, not the body. Where there is no intention, there is no fault. Lucretia however said: I do not acquit myself from punishment. In future, no immoral woman will stay alive by invoking the example of Lucretia, and then stuck a dagger into her heart. Lucretia s name has been engraved into the sharp beak. This bird represents the mechanism of evil, whereby the victim does not respond to violence with forgiveness but with violence. It also refers to the present spiral of violence in the Middle East - the location of the lost Garden of Eden? 12 Heron Many herons are either white, the colour of innocence, or ash-grey, the colour of penance. 13 28 mapping out paradise 29 Kunstrecensie Mapping Out Paradise In het FINANCIEEL DAGBLAD van vrijdag 23 augustus stond een recensie van de expositie Mapping Out Paradise in museum De Pont te Tilburg. Daarin legde de recensent Ormeling onder meer een verband tussen het gedachtegoed van de schilder Marc Mulders en het gedachte goed van communisten en nazi s. Zulk een uitgesproken stellingname vraagt natuurlijk om een reactie. Het stuk van Ormeling druipt van het cynisme en zie ik daarnaast als een sterk narcistisch gekleurd berijden van een eigen stokpaardje. De slotzin ( Communisme en nazisme bijvoorbeeld waren moderne, seculiere varianten van de religieuze utopie ) heeft natuurlijk bij aanvang af zijn kijken gevormd en vervormd. Ik leest geen enkele poging tot werkelijk gevoelsmatig proberen te ervaren wat het werk met je doet als beschouwer. Cynisme is per definitie psychologisch gezien altijd een wijze van weerstand en geforceerd afstand nemen i.p.v. involveren. Ook wordt niet echt gebruik gemaakt van wat er in de stukken over de tentoonstelling (op de website van De Pont en Marc Mulders na te lezen) geschreven wordt over de intenties. Ik vind het bijna te bizar voor woorden dat Ormeling de nazi s erbij haalt in het kader van dit werk en de gedachtegang van Mulders. Christelijk denken in het algemeen en Mulders motivatie in het bijzonder, stelt hij zo veel te ongenuanceerd in het verlengde van de nazi-praktijken. Weinig andere kunstenaars hechten zo sterk aan het werken in verbond met anderen en schatplichtig voelen aan de traditie dan Mulders. Daarnaast is bijna alle andere grote kunst steeds geboren uit een toewijding aan hogere idealen en het idee zo dichter bij een betere wereld of God te komen. De maatschappelijk betrokken kunstenaar moet iets met wat hij om zich heen ziet. Bij Mulders is natuurlijk bekend dat hij dat vanuit een sterke RK levensovertuiging doet. Steeds zijn daarbij het lijden en het zoeken naar mogelijkheden troost te bieden in en door de schoonheid zijn Leitmotiv. Als hij een reclame ziet van Tom Ford waar zijn nieuwe parfumflesje de kaalgeschoren vagina van een jonge vrouw bedekt, moet Mulders iets met dat vulgaire beeld. Het beeld dat hij dan maakt is niet puur op het esthetische gericht (integendeel zou ik bijna willen zeggen) maar Critic s review of Mapping Out Paradise THE Financial Daily newspaper issue of Friday 23 August contained an art critic s review of the Mapping Out Paradise exhibition in the De Pont Museum in Tilburg. In this piece, the art critic Ormeling also establishes a link between the body of ideas formulated by the painter Marc Mulders and the intellectual legacy of the Communists and Nazis. Of course, such a striking opinion deserves some kind of response. Ormeling s review is loaded with cynicism and, as I see it, is also a very narcissistic exercise in promoting his own little pet theory. It is obvious that the idea expressed in the last sentence ( Communism and Nazism, for example, were modern and secular variants of the religious utopia ) has influenced and distorted his perspective from the very start. I could not discover the least attempt at trying to experience and find out what impact the artist s work actually has on the viewer. From a psychological viewpoint, cynicism is always, by definition, a way of creating resistance and forcibly distancing oneself instead of involving oneself. In addition, no real use is made of what is contained in the articles devoted to the exhibition (available on the websites of De Pont and Marc Mulders) concerning the intentions of the artist. I find it almost too bizarre for words that Ormeling points to the Nazis within the framework of the artist s work and body of thought. In doing so, he adopts an overly simplified approach in linking Christian thinking in general and Mulders motivation in particular to the practices of the Nazis. Very few artists are so committed to working in a spirit of cooperation with others and feel such a sense of indebtedness to tradition as does Mulders. Besides, almost all great art springs from a dedication to higher ideals and the intention to come closer to a better world or to God. Any artist who is socially involved feels compelled to do something with what he sees in his surroundings. In the case of Mulders, it is well known that he does so within the framework of a strongly religious and Roman Catholic philosophy of life. His leitmotiv in this regard is always based on the concept of suffering and the search for ways of finding consolation in and through beauty. Upon seeing an advertisement by Tom Ford in which his newest perfume probeert wel het vulgaire te vangen en te vergelijken met het duivelse/monsterlijke. We kijken daardoor weer anders naar het ons omringende. Die perversie van deze tijd dienen we tegengas te geven, vindt Mulders en dat is iets heel anders dan wat communisme en fascisme beoogden. Hij moordt en verbrandt niet, stelt niet Kalt ieder wie anders denkt, heeft het niet over uitverkoren ras, maar probeert juist bruggen te slaan over rassen en culturen heen. De wijze waarop hij dat doet is daarbij niet onderdanig maar wel dienend. Vaak kun je de werken van Mulders ook genieten zonder van dat al te weten, met name bij zijn schilderijen (hoewel er ook daar altijd iets te zien is van het donkere, van een vuile veeg, van het onvolmaakte). Bij het in de recensie beschreven werk Mapping Out Paradise -wat ik zelf trouwens het meest gecompliceerde, in de zin van meervoudig te interpreteren, vind dat ik ooit van hem zag- kun je nauwelijks kijken zonder na te denken over waar je zelf staat met het leven en met het geloof. Dat is dus voor de beschouwer in deze tijden duidelijk een opgave waar we liever niet aan willen. De Nijmeegse filosofische antropoloog Tom Lemaire schreef laatst, geïnspireerd door Levi-Strauss, over het thema religie in de moderne samenleving en zei daarbij dat de huidige mens, gefixeerd op het bestaan van het individu de kosmische omgeving van het bestaan nauwelijks kan bevatten als hij er al aandacht voor heeft. Zeker Ormeling heeft zichzelf dat soort vragen duidelijk niet durven stellen. Hij zat al vast aan de uitkomst. Op die manier ben je alleen in staat te kijken naar kunst die in jouw eigen straatje past. Verbazing en verwondering is dan niet mogelijk. Hij roept Mulders dus op belerende toon op om maar eens een boek van Oscar Wild of Rainer Maria Rilke te gaan lezen. Bob van Eerd, Klinisch Psycholoog Voorschoten, 2008 bottle is seen covering the shaved vagina of a young woman, Mulders has to do something with this vulgar image. The image he then creates does not focus purely on the aesthetic aspects (quite the opposite I would almost say), but it does try to capture the element of vulgarity and compare it with the devilish/monstrous aspects. As a result, we end up seeing the objects around us in a new way. In Mulders view, we need to counter this modern-day perversion, but this is something completely different from what Communism and Fascism tried to accomplish. He does not murder and burn, does not eliminate everyone who thinks differently and does not talk about a superior race. Instead, he actually tries to build bridges between different races and cultures. The manner in which he does so is not submissive or servile but rather very much intended to serve others Often, one can simply enjoy the works created by Mulders without knowing any of this, particularly in the case of his paintings (although these also always contain some hint of darkness, some kind of dark smudge and sense of imperfection). It is almost impossible to view the work which is the subject of the review, Mapping Out Paradise - which, by the way, I find to be the most complicated work I have ever seen by him, in the sense that it can be interpreted in several different ways - without thinking about where you stand in terms of your own life and beliefs. This is definitely a challenge which the modern-day observer would prefer not to take up at all. Inspired by Lévi-Strauss, the philosopher-anthropologist from Nijmegen, Tom Lemaire, recently wrote a piece on the theme of religion in modern society and stated that modern-day man, as focused as he is on the existence of the individual, is hardly able to appreciate the cosmic significance of our existence, even in those rare instances when he actually gives it some of his attention. Ormeling, at any rate, has clearly not dared to ask himself any such questions. In fact, he already knows the result beforehand. He is therefore condemned to seeing and experiencing only those works of art which fit neatly into his own private world view. Experiencing any sense of surprise or wonder is then out of the question. All he can do, in the end, is to call on Mulders, from the vantage point of his own so-called moral high ground, to go and read a book by Oscar Wilde or Rainer Maria Rilke. 17 36 37 Oranjefonds raam Aantekeningen van Marc Mulders bij zijn gebrandschilderd glas-in-loodraam voor het Oranjefonds, Amor proximi, en de vijf panelen gezandstraald glas, Paradijs. Onthulling door H.K.H. Prinses Máxima en Z.K.H. Prins Willem-Alexander In opdracht van het Oranjefonds heb ik voor het nieuwe kantoor aan de Maliebaan te Utrecht een zes meter hoog gebrandschilderd glas-in-loodraam gemaakt, Amor proximi. Voor de entree en een bovenlichtraam op de bovenste verdieping heb ik vijf panelen vervaardigd in de techniek gezandstraald glas, getiteld Paradijs. Het Oranjefonds spreekt over zijn missie in termen van sociale participatie, en sociale cohesie. Prachtige projecten realiseert het dan ook in onze samenleving. Het Oranjefonds maakt middels haar financiële bijdragen aan ideële initiatieven uit de samenleving ontmoetingen mogelijk tussen mensen, zodat zij elkaar de hand geven, de handen ineen slaan en elkaar bij de hand nemen. Daarom zijn verdeeld over het raam handen te zien die in gebaar en handeling deze gedachte van zorg voor elkaar aanschouwelijk maken. De afbeeldingen zijn afkomstig uit een aantal barok- en renaissanceschilderijen. De uitgescheurde fragmenten zijn neergevleid in het bloemhart van de Amaryllis, daar waar de stamper en meeldraden een mystiek hart vormen, een oord waar het handgebaar huizen mag. De taal van de Amaryllis, haar bloei en verwelking, haar fragiliteit, haar geheimenisvol Hart, geeft mij het juiste dragende lichaam dat het collagefragment, de fotografische afbeelding van het handengebaar, bewaren zal. Orange Fund window Notes by Marc Mulders on his stained-glass window for the Oranjefonds (Orange Fund), Amor proximi, and the five panels of sandblasted glass, Paradise Unveiling by HRH Princess Máxima and HRH Prince Willem-Alexander At the request of the Oranjefonds, I made a 6 m high stained-glass window for the new office on the Maliebaan in Utrecht, titled Amor proximi. For the entrance and for an overhead window on the top floor, I made five panels titled Paradise using the sandblasted glass technique. The Oranjefonds describes its mission in terms of social participation and social cohesion. It is therefore not surprising that it realizes beautiful projects in society. By subsidizing idealistic initiatives anchored in society, the Oranjefonds makes it possible for people to meet each other so that they can give each other a hand, work together and guide each other. That is also why hands are visible in the window which, in gesture and action, illustrate this concept of caring for each other. The images have been taken from several Baroque and Renaissance paintings. The torn out fragments have been very gently placed in the flower heart of the Amaryllis, where the pistil and stamens create a mystical heart - a place where the hand gesture is very much at home. The language of the Amaryllis, its flowering and wilting, its fragility, and its heart full of secrets provide me with the appropriate vehicle for carrying and storing the collage fragment, the photographic image of the hand gesture. De Goddelijke deugd liefde omvat volgens het dubbelgebod van de liefde in Math. 22:37-40 zowel de amor dei, de liefde van God, als wel de amor proximi, de naastenliefde. Het is deze arbeid aan zorg en omkijken naar, en opbouwen met elkaar die het wezen en de vrucht van het Oranjefonds is. Deze zorg voor elkaar, deze naastenliefde, wordt door zowel de islam als het christendom verkondigd als een groot goed, en als de missie voor de gelovige in het dagelijks leven. In de Islam betekenen de vijf vingers van de hand; geloofsverkondiging, gebed, pelgrimage, vasten en Liefdadigheid. Henri Nouwen, eindelijk thuis gedachten bij rembrandts terugkeer van de verloren zoon...het echte middelpunt van Rembrandts schilderij wordt gevormd door de handen van de vader. Daarop is alle licht geconcentreerd. Daarin wordt de genade tastbaar en concreet. Daarin vallen vergeving, verzoening en genezing samen....het waren die handen die mij bij mijn geboorte verwelkomden, mij vast hielden op de schoot van mijn moeder, mij voedsel gaven en met dekens toedekten. In tijden van gevaar hebben zij mij beschermd en in tijden van verdriet getroost. Zij hebben mij uitgewuifd en welkom geheten. Die handen zijn Gods handen. Het zijn ook de handen van mijn ouders, leraren, geneesheren, van alle mensen die God mij gegeven heeft om mij daaraan te herinneren hoe veilig ik vastgehouden werd. It is this work of caring for and looking after and working together with each other which is the essence and the fruit of the Oranjefonds. This caring for one another, this love of one s fellow-man is declared by Islam as well as Christianity to be a great virtue and the mission for the believer in daily life. In Islam, the five fingers of the hand stand for the following: proclamation of the faith, prayer, pilgrimage, fasting and Charity. Henri Nouwen - Finally at home - thoughts on Rembrandt s Return of the lost son... the real centre of Rembrandt s painting is formed by the hands of the father. That is where all the light is focused. It is where the quality of mercy becomes tangible and concrete, where forgiveness, reconciliation and healing come together.... it was these hands which welcomed me upon my birth, which held me on my mother s lap, which gave me food and covered me with blankets. In times of danger, they protected me, and in times of sorrow, they comforted me. They waved to me when I left, and welcomed me on my return. These hands are the hands of God. They are also the hands of my parents, teachers, and doctors - of all those people whom God has given me to remind me of how safely I am being held and protected. 19 het laatste oordeel The Last Judgment Aantekening bij het glas-in-loodraam Het Laatste Oordeel voor de Sint Jan Kathedraal te Den Bosch, en wel specifiek over het paneel geheel linksonder; het vliegtuig van N.Y. ondergebracht in een omgekeerde Iris in de hel. Al sinds 2001 is het terrorisme een van de thema s binnen mijn iconografische agenda. Indertijd maakte ik hierover al collages in mijn in eigen beheer uitgegeven kunstenaarstijdschrift ( Politieke collages bevinden zich onder meer in de collecties van het Van Abbe Museum te Eindhoven, het De Pont museum te Tilburg en het Stedelijk Museum te Amsterdam). Elke kunstenaar die in zijn tijd een Bijbels thema verbeeldt, zal zowel zijn handen als zijn ziel bij de arbeid gekleurd weten door de dan aanwezige tijdszenuw en die vertalen in een persoonlijke iconografie. Ook zal de kunstenaar zijn dagelijkse arbeid plotseling onderbroken weten door een voor hem ingrijpende en dramatische gebeurtenis buiten zijn atelier, zal hij het geziene leed en menselijk tekort vervolgens willen, ja moeten noteren, registreren, afdrukken en documenteren, en zo ook tevens behoeden voor de vergetelheid (zie Constant met Nieuw Babylon, Gerhard Richter met de Baader Meinhof werken, Picasso met de Guernica, Goya met de executie van Keizer Maximiiaan). Daarom heb ik voor het Laatste Oordeel, naast de gebruikelijke verdeling Hemel-Vagevuur-Hel, ook in de hel een beeld willen tonen wat voor ons allen juist nu spreekt en ook handelt over de uitdrukking een hel op aarde. Since 2001, terrorism has been one of the themes on my iconographic agenda. At the time, I was already making collages devoted to this theme in the artists magazine which I published myself (my political collages can also be found in the collections of the Van Abbe Museum in Eindhoven, the De Pont museum in Tilburg and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam). The hands as well as soul of every artist depicting a biblical theme in his own day and age will be impacted by the crucial events of his time, which will then be transformed into his own personal iconography. And every artist whose daily work is suddenly interrupted by a far-reaching and tragic event outside his workshop will feel a need and even compulsion to note down, register, codify and document the suffering and human shortcomings he has seen, thereby also preventing them from being forgotten (e.g. New Babylon by Constant, the Baader-Meinhof works by Gerhard Richter, Picasso s Guernica, and the execution of Emperor Maximilian by Goya). This is also why, for the Last Judgment, in addition to the generally accepted division between Heaven, Purgatory and Hell, I wished to depict an image in hell which is recognizable to all of us and which gives meaning to the expression a hell on earth.

20 42 6 het laatste oordeel the last judgment 43 En voor mij is dat vooral mijn ongeloof dat gelovigen, zowel terroristen als geestelijke en politieke (wereld)leiders, menen met bloed aan hun handen de trap omhoog naar de Hemel te kunnen betreden. Immers in de Koran en de Bijbel staat dat die tocht omhoog gepaard zal gaan in liefde voor de naaste, en op de sporten van die ladder zijn er ter initiatie en oefening onder meer de schuldbelijdenis, de treden van vergeving en die van verzoening met de naaste en de vijand. Het mag dus niet gaan om handen gedoopt in haat, maar onze handen moeten juist zorgende en schenkende handen zijn. Dat geldt voor terroristen en ook voor gelovigen die binnen hun eigen religie elkaar bestrijden: de protestanten en katholieken bijvoorbeeld in Ierland, de soenieten en sji ieten in Irak, President Bush die zijn jongens tot een nieuwe kruisvaarderstocht aanzet. Want al dezen doen niet wat de Heilige schrift ons voorhoudt: raak Uw naaste en Uw vijand aan met de liefde die uit de ziel geboren is en in de ogen waarheid wordt. Zij allen denken het laatste oordeel van de liefhebbende God al te kennen, nemen in hun blindheid een voorschot op dat laatste oordeel en dat is de aardse hel van bloed vergieten. De hel op aarde is juist voor mij de duivel die in de gedaante van een gelovig zijn de boodschap van liefde uit de Bijbel en de Koran omkeert om dood en verderf te zaaien; Ga weg van Mij vervloekten, naar het eeuwige vuur, dat aangelegd is voor de duivel en zijn engelen (Math. 25, 31-46). Daarom heb ik ook een vogel in de hel gesitueerd, die omziet naar zijn eigen staart en daarin de duivel ontwaart. Daarom ook heeft de omgekeerde Iris in de hel wel zijn schone kleuren behouden, immers het kwaad is er in verleidelijke en zelfbewuste vorm For myself in particular, this is primarily a result of my disbelief that people who call themselves believers, including terrorists as well as spiritual and political (world) leaders, think that they will be able to climb the ladder to Heaven with blood on their hands. After all, the Koran as well as the Bible makes it clear that this ascent must be accompanied by love for one s fellow man and that the rungs of the ladder can only be passed with the help of initiation and exercise, which also include confession and acts of forgiveness and reconciliation with one s fellow man as well as the enemy. Our hands may therefore never be dipped in hate; instead, they must be hands that care for others and serve others. This is true of terrorists as well as believers who fight each other within the framework of their own religion, for example the Protestants and Catholics in Ireland, the Sunnis and Shiites in Iraq, and President Bush encouraging young Americans to participate in a new crusade. All these are not doing that which the holy Scriptures command us: touch your fellow man and your enemy with the love which springs from the soul and becomes truth in the eyes. All of them are convinced that they know the last judgment of the loving God and, in their blindness, act in accordance with their preconceived notion of this last judgment. The end result is the spilling of blood and a living hell on earth. For me, hell on earth is the devil who, while pretending to be a believer, turns the message of love to be found in the Bible and the Koran upside down in order to sow death and destruction: Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels (Math. 25, 31-46). That is also why I have placed a bird in hell, which looks around at its own tail and recognizes the devil in it. It is also why the upside down Iris depicted in hell retains its beautiful colours. After all, evil can also be found in very alluring and deceptive shapes.
