2 Dia 1: titel Dank je wel <voorzitter> voor het introduceren van ons en deze emogramworkshop. Laat ik eerst onszelf kort introduceren en wat vertellen over de achtergrond van deze onderzoeksmethode. Thank you <chair person> for introducing us and this emogram workshop. 3 Dia 2: introductie Gerard en Karin Daar staat Karin van Beurden en mijn naam is Gerard van Os. Beiden werken voor Saxion University of Applied Science, of hogeschool zoals dat in het nederlandse bestel heet, hier in Enschede. Karin is daar lector Industrial Design en ik werk als docent bij de afdeling Industrieel Product Ontwerpen en als onderzoeker in de groep van Karin. Het lectoraat Industrial Design heeft twee belangrijke onderzoekslijnen: materialen en technologie in ontwerp en doelgroepgericht ontwerpen. Mijn focus, zowel in het onderwijs als in het onderzoek, is op de gebruiker van elk soort product, en niet op de mensen die die producten kopen. Een van de doelen van het lectoraat is om kennis over en ervaring met onderzoeksmethodieken beschikbaar en bruikbaar te maken voor kleine en grote lokale en regionale ondernemingen en ontwerpbureaus This is Karin van Beurden and my name is Gerard van Os. We both are working for Saxion University of Applied Science (hogeschool in Dutch) here in Enschede, Karin as the Chair Industrial Design (in Dutch we say Lector Industrial Design) and me as a lecturer in the Industrial Product Design department and as a researcher in the group of Karin. The Chair Industrial Design has two main research subjects: Materials and technology in design and target group centered design what is usually called 'user centred design'. but which we changed to 'design for target groups', as we feel it better covers what we want to achieve. My focus, both in education and in the Chair is on focus, therefore, is on the users of products of whatever type, and not on the people that buy these products. One of the goals of the Chair Industrial Design is to make knowledge about and experiences with user centred research and design methodology available and applicable to local and regional production businesses, entrepreneurs and design agencies. 4 Dia 5: websites 55plustoolbox en ontwerpenvoorzorgverleners Voor een belangrijk deel wordt dit gedaan in gesubsidieerde onderzoeksprogramma's als RAAK-MKB Vitale Ouderen en RAAK_-MKB Ontwerpen voor Zorgverleners. Het eerste project was gericht op de vitale ouderen tussen 50 en 70 jaar terwijl het ander project gericht was op de professionele thuiszorgverlener en mantelzorger. In beide gevallen met de vraag: hoe en welke producten kun je producten voor die specifieke groepen van gebruikers. Het lectoraat heeft veel meer projecten gedaan als deze en doet die nog, maar ik noem deze twee omdat het emogram in het Vitale ouderen project is ontstaan en verder verfijnt in het zorgverlenersproject. To a large extend this is done in subsidized research programs like the RAAK-MKB Designing for Healthy Seniors project and RAAK-MKB Design for Caregivers. The first project focused on vital elderly people between 50 and 70 years of age, while the latter focussed on the professional and informal (mantelzorger in Dutch) home care givers. In both cases the main question was about which and how to design products for these specific group of target users. Obviously, we did and do many more projects, but the reason I mention these two is that we started the development of the emogram tool in de Vital Seniors project and adapted it with the experiences during the Caregivers project. 5 Dia 6: Oorsprong 1 van 2 Voor u misschien een open deur voor u, maar een belangrijk onderdeel van productontwikkeling is het achterhalen de mening van de gebruiker over een product: hoe werkt het voor haar, waarom vindt ze het mooi of lelijk, hoe graag wil ze het hebben of gebruiken? Er zijn wel gereedschappen als bijvoorbeeld 'cultural probes', observatie en interview en dagboeken die helpen om dat boven tafel te krijgen, maar we merken ook dat daarmee niet de diepere zielenroerselen aangeraakt worden. Bij het lezen van een artikel van Sabrina Duda van eye square in Berlijn en dat ging overeen mindmap methode om merkbeleving te onderzoeken, zagen we mogelijkheden om dat om te bouwen tot een gereedschap om meer grip te krijgen op die lastig te meten onderwerpen als gevoelens en emoties. Als gezegd: we zagen daarin mogelijkheden en zo ontstond het emogram, een methode te gebruiken bij gebruiksonderzoek voor het in kaart brengen van emoties, gevoelens en andere lastig te meten onderwerpen. Obvious as it may be to you, bu an important part of product development is eliciting the ideas and feelings of a user about a product: how does it work for her, why does she find it beautiful or ugly, how eager is she to buy and use it? There are tools like cultural probes, observation an interviews and diary studies, but even then we feel that we don t always get to the core of their thoughts. While reading an article by Sabrina Duda from eye square in Berlin that described a minmaplike method for research of brand experience, we saw opportunities to redesign it to a tool to het a grip on the those hart to measure issues like feelings and emotions. As said: we saw opportunities and that is how the emogram came into our toolbox. It is a method that can be used during user research to map emotions, feelings and other hart to measure issues.. 6 Dia 7: Oorsprong 2 van 2 In essentie gaat het om een onderwerp dat in het midden van een vel papier wordt gezet en waaromheen dan woorden die gedachten, associaties, gevoelens, emoties en wat dies meer zij uitdrukken worden geplaatst door de deelnemer. Afstand tot het onderwerp zegt iets over het gewicht van die uitspraak: hoe dichter bij het onderwerp hoe belangrijker het is. Ook belangrijk: deze methode werkt optimaal als het twee maal wordt uitgevoerd: bijvoorbeeld voor en na een interventie, of voordat en nadat de deelnemer een nieuw product ziet of een dienst gebruikt. Wanneer het emogram toepassen? Wij denken misschien wel altijd, maar in ieder geval in die onderzoekssituaties waarbij je grip wilt krijgen op gevoelens, gedachte, emoties of associaties die mensen hebben of krijgen door het gebruik van een product of dienst. Het is geen gereedschap voor harde data als taaktijd of aantal en ernst van fouten (als gebruikers die al kunnen maken, fouten bedoel ik). Het is een gereedschap waarmee we proberen inzicht te krijgen in lastig te meten menselijke mogelijkheden. In essence the tool is about a subject that is placed in the centre of a piece of paper. The participant then writes and positions words that express thoughts, associations, feelings, emotions and what have we more around the subject. The distance to the subjects says something about the importance: the close a word is to the subject, the more important it is. Also important is the way the tool is applied. The best way is to generate an emogram before and after for instance an intervention or before and after a participant is exposed to a new product or using a service. When to apply an emogram? We think maybe always, but especially in research situations where emotions, associations, thoughts or feelings that participants have while using a product or service are of importance. It's not a tool for measuring hard data like task time or number and severity of errors (although they obviously never make mistakes). 7 Dia 8: Voorbeeld World Usability Day : tekst bij presentatie - workshop 'emogram' Deze dia toont een voorbeeld van een eerdere versie van het emogram. Hier staat het onderwerp in het midden en kon alleen met de afstand tot het onderwerp gespeeld worden. In een latere versie, en die gaan we hier ook gebruiken, kan ook aangegeven worden of een emotie of associatie positief of negatief is. Dit voorbeeld laat de gedachten en associaties zien van een drietal kopers van kunstgras. This slide shows an example of an earlier version of the emogram. The subject is in the centre, and participants could only use distance to the subject while ordering their notes. In a later version, and that is the one we will be using today, it is also possible to indicate whether an emotion or association is positive or negative. 8 Dia 10: stap 1 World Usability Day : tekst bij presentatie - workshop 'emogram' De eerste en voorbereidende stap bestaat uit het trekken van een lijn van links naar rechts. Het onderwerp van het onderzoek kan dan aan de linker kant worden geschreven of geplakt. De bovenste helft van het papier is voor de positieve dingen; de onderkant voor de negatieve. Dit is iets waar alleen de onderzoeker bij betrokken is. In preparation, the thing to do is to draw a line from left to right in the middle of a piece of paper. The subject of research is then written at the left side. The part above the line is for the positive things; below the line is for the negative ones. This part only concerns the researcher. 9 Dia 11: stap 2 World Usability Day : tekst bij presentatie - workshop 'emogram' Dan begint de eerste associatie. Zonder het onderwerp aan te raken schrijft de deelnemer wat in haar opkomt aan losse gedachten, emoties, gevoelens, associaties, etc. op geeltjes (of roodjes, groentjes, blauwtjes, etc.). Vervolgens worden die notities ergens op het papier geplakt. Daarbij geldt dat hoe dichter bij het onderwerp, hoe belangrijker de notitie is. Positieve notities worden aan de bovenkant van de lijn geplakt waarbij de afstand tot de lijn aangeeft wat het gewicht van de notitie is: hoe hoger hoe belangrijker. Hetzelfde voor de negatieve notities, maar deze worden onder de lijn geplakt. Tijdens vooral het plakken kan de deelnemer uitleg geven over de notitie en plakpositie. In de praktijk kan de onderzoeker een foto nemen van het resultaat. Dit emogram wordt vervolgens even aan de kant gelegd. Now the first associations begins. Without touching the subject, the participant writes down any thought, emotion, feeling, association, etc. on sticky-notes. Next the stickies are glued on the paper. The closer a note is to the subject, the more important it is. Positive notes are glued above the line, where the distance from the line is a measure of its weight: far from the line means that it is a heavy emotion for instance. The same applies for the negative notes: These are put below the line. While putting notes on the paper, the participant explains why the note and why it is put where it is put. 10 Dia 12: stap 3 World Usability Day : tekst bij presentatie - workshop 'emogram' Vervolgens mag de deelnemer het onderwerp aanraken, er mee spelen, etc. Na enige tijd worden nieuwe gedachten, emoties, gevoelens, associaties, etc. op geeltjes genoteerd. Die nieuwe notities worden op een nieuw emovel geplakt op dezelfde manier als de eerste keer. Ook nu wordt met de deelnemer gesproken over de notities en plakposities. Ook nu kan de onderzoeker weer een foto nemen van het resultaat. Now the participant can touch, play, etc. the subject of research for some time. After a while, new thoughts, emotions, feelings, associations, etc. are noted on stickies. These new notes are glued the same way as before on a new sheet of paper. Also, the participants explains why the note and why it is put exactly there. Like before, the researcher can take a picture of the end result. 11 Dia 13: stap 4 World Usability Day : tekst bij presentatie - workshop 'emogram' Voor de vierde stap wordt het eerste emogram er bij gehaald en bespreekt de deelnemer wat ze ziet: wat zijn de overeenkomst en verschillen tussen de eerste en tweede emovellen en waarom is dat zo. Het kan zijn dat er notities bijgekomen of verwijderd zijn, het kan zijn dat er notities van plaats veranderd zijn: waarom is dat? Voor alle duidelijkheid, en dat geldt voor alle stappen en voor dit soort onderzoek: er zijn geen foute antwoorden! In this fourth step, the first emogram is brought back to the table. The participant, then, explains what she sees: The similarities and differences between the two and why that is. It is possible that new notes appeared, that notes are removed from the first to the second, or that notes have changed position. In all cases the question is why. 12 Dia 14: stap 5 World Usability Day : tekst bij presentatie - workshop 'emogram' De laatste stap gaat over de conclusies die door de onderzoeker te trekken zijn naar aanleiding van de resultaten uit alle interviews over het onderwerp en waarbij het emogram gebruikt is. Vragen die beantwoord kunnen worden zijn bijvoorbeeld wat komt er uit de resultaten, hoe beïnvloedt dat het herontwerp van de product of dienst, etc. Ook van belang is om steeds te reflecteren op het proces en het gereedschap: bijvoorbeeld hoe ging het, wat ga je de volgende keer anders doen (als data nodig is). This last step is only for the researcher. He has to draw conclusions from all the interviews about the subject and where the emogram is used. Questions that can be answered include what general conclusions van be drawn from the emograms, how these conclusions driver redesigning the product or service, et. 13 Dia 16: workshop Zijn er vragen over de beschreven methodiek en voordat we er hier mee gaan werken? Before we practice the tool, are there any questions? Dan gaan we nu over tot het praktijkgedeelte. Ik wil graag groepen van drie of vier. Dat is op zich niet handig en realistisch: normaliter doe je dit soort dingen één-op-één, maar voor nu is drie of vier handiger. Elke groep kiest één van de producten die hier op tafel staan. De methode is op zich ook voor zachtere onderwerpen als beleving, maar voor nu kiezen we voor fysieke onderwerpen. Het mag een eigen onderwerp zijn, maar de voorkeur is wel dat gedurende het spel dat onderwerp aanraakbaar is. Een van de deelnemers is dan de onderzoekernotulist. De belangrijkste functie is om het proces gaande te houden. Zonder het onderwerp van onderzoek aan te raken wordt dan het eerste emogram opgesteld. Dit emogram wordt even aan de kant gelegd. Dan kan er even worden gespeeld en gesproken met en over het onderwerp. Onthoud daarbij welke gedachten en associaties opkomen of welke emoties het veroorzaak. Daarna wordt het tweede emogram opgesteld. Het eerste emogram wordt er bij gepakt en de overeenkomsten en verschillen worden besproken. De groepsoefening sluit af met een reflectie op het gereedschap zelf, de ervaringen tijdens de oefening, de mogelijke toepassing, etc. Voor ons vooral interessant is hoe we het gereedschap kunnen verbeteren, er van uitgaande dat het een nuttig gereedschap is natuurlijk! We het praktische gedeelte plenair af waarbij elke groep hun reflectie kan delen met de alle aanwezigen. Then we start with the workshop. I 'd like to have groups of three or four. Obviously this tool is normally used in a oneon-one situation, but for this workshop three or four is more convenient. Every group selects one of the products in front of me. The tool can also be used for softer subjects like brand experience, but for this workshop we will work with physical products. You are allowed to select a subject of your own, but I recommend that the subject is physically available here. One of the members is assigned the job of interviewer-observer mainly to keep the process active. Without touching the subject, the first emogram is drawn. This emogram is put aside for the moment. Then all take the possibility to touch and play with the subject and to talk about it. Take note of your thoughts, emotions, associations etc. Then a second emogram is drawn. The first emogram is than compared to the second one, and the similarities and differences are discussed. The group part of the workshop than closes with a reflection on the tool itself, the experiences while applying the tool, how it could be used in your own work, etc. To us, Karin and myself, it is good to know how we can improve the tool, obviously in the assumption that it is a useful tool to begin with! Every group than has a couple of minutes to explain to all here how they think about the tool. We will take 20 minutes for the research part. The plenary part will take about 10 minutes.
