5 PREFACE The interfaculty research institute AZIRE was founded in the autumn of This annual report describes AZIRE s activities, output and input during 2009, the first year of its existence. In 2009 much effort was put into building the financial and organisational structure of the institute and setting the course for its scientific policy, mission and goals has laid the foundation for transforming AZIRE into a Societal Top Institute in the years to come. A Societal Top Institute that combines excellent educational research with active involvement in the most important questions facing society. 5

6 1. DESCRIPTION OF THE RESEARCH INSTITUTE AZIRE s mission is to improve insights and knowledge concerning education in the broadest sense of the word. AZIRE focuses on learning processes in school children, students and adults, in which biological and psychosocial development plays a key role. In addition, AZIRE assists teachers and teacher educators in strengthening and extending their professional skills in the field of teaching, preparing children for later life and knowledge transfer. AZIRE operates as a centre for multidisciplinary knowledge and expertise with scientific and societal relevance. It has an outstanding research training programme and comprises both fundamental and applied research. Through dedicated intervention studies AZIRE aims to facilitate evidence-based education by translating insights from research into educational practice. Research within AZIRE aims both at learning and teaching. In the case of teaching research focuses on the effects of innovative learning environments and learning and teaching strategies. With respect to learning large-scale questionnaire studies are carried out to examine determinants of school performance in the social (i.e., parental background), biological (i.e., nutrition, sleep) and psychological (i.e., motivation) domain. In addition, experimental neuropsychological studies are performed, combined with functional imaging techniques, in order to explore the neural and cognitive underpinnings of learning. Researchers work closely together with a great number of national societal and commercial organisations: o Universities of Groningen, Maastricht, Leiden, Amsterdam UvA, Utrecht o Universities of Applied Sciences such as Avans, INHolland, Saxion and Windesheim o schools for primary, secondary, vocational and higher education o educational publishers o teacher organisations o education support organisations o mental health institutes o food industry 2. STRUCTURE OF THE RESEARCH INSTITUTE Research programmes The following research programmes participate in AZIRE: Teaching and Teacher Education (TTE) The research programme focuses on three sub-themes: a) knowledge development of pupils and students; b) knowledge development of teachers and teacher educators; and c) knowledge development and assessment in higher education. The mission of the research programme is to develop knowledge that both contributes to educational theory and is grounded in and useful for the improvement of - educational practice. Educational Neuropsychology (EduNP) The mission of the Educational Neuropsychology programme is to employ knowledge from brain and cognition research to improve education. Its aims are twofold. Firstly, to improve scientific knowledge of teaching, education, and learning by conducting fundamental and applied neuropsychological research. Secondly, to facilitate evidencebased education by translating insights from research into educational practice. 6

7 Social and Emotional Development (SED) The research programme focuses on the development of social relations and their influence on academic success and psychopathology. The three key issues are: a) the impact of developing social risk factors on academic success; b) the interaction of social risk factors and their influence on child development and c) the impact of the interaction between vulnerabilities, (congenital) cognitive skills and social risk factors on academic success and psychopathology. Cultural and Ethical Perspectives on Education (CEPE) This research programme consists of two research lines: Education, Morality and Religion and Developmental Education in the school context. The central research theme of the programme is the search for educational practices that best facilitate the development of children into thriving adults, i.e. adults who are able to participate in a range of cultural practices and can critically contribute to the welfare of society. The research programme aims to elucidate which (cultural) practices positively influence the development of children and how their participation in these practices facilitates their development. The answers to these normative questions are informed by empirical research and reflected upon by philosophical investigation. Organogram AZIRE Organisation The governing board of AZIRE consists of Prof. dr. J. Passchier (chair) and Prof. J. Beishuizen. There are two vacancies. The Programme Committee consists of Prof. dr. S. Miedema, Prof. dr. J. Jolles, Dr. L. Krabbendam and Prof. dr. P. van Lier. The position of Principal Investigator for the Centre for Educational Training, Assessment and Research is vacant. 7

8 AZIRE employs both support and research/teaching staff and has a research office that provides training courses and research and data management support to PhDs. 9 AZIRE s goals for the coming period Professionalising the internal organisation and support structure; Expanding and setting up strategic alliances with minimally four universities of applied sciences, tens of schools for primary, secondary and vocational education and educational publishers, companies and governmental institutions; Becoming an active and competitive player in the educational and policy research market through a) acquisition of governmental research grants in the field of education and b) setting up an office that offers training and consultancy to societal partners on a commercial basis; Becoming the leading centre on educational research in the Netherlands with a special emphasis on, on the one hand, brain and learning and, on the other hand, evidencebased education ; Expanding research projects with respect to Research in Higher Education in both institutes for applied sciences and universities; Striving for fundamental and applied research aimed at increasing the quality of students, students choice behaviour, study results and motivation. This requires large scale research into neuropsychological determinants (skills) and evidence-based interventions in educational practice; Attracting more BA and MA students by revising and updating the educational programme and making it more societally relevant; Offering an international top master course on Mind Brain & Education from 2011 onwards in close collaboration with leading research institutes in the field of education; Creating synergy between the research topics learning, teaching and development with a focus on children, adolescents and teachers. 4. INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATION In 2009 international collaboration was intensified and initiated in each of the research programmes. This resulted in: - involvement in international research communities (TTE); - collaboration through the recently founded International Mind Brain Learning Society (IMBES), specifically within the committee for the development of educational neuroscience, and the steering group Brain, Learning and Education instigated by the OESO (Centre for Educational Research and Innovation, CERI). Further collaborations have been set up in the field of neuroimaging of cognitive functions with the Institute of Psychiatry, Kings College London, and the Institute of Neurology, University College London, both of which are internationally recognized for their excellence in functional neuroimaging (EduNP); - fruitful collaborations with renowned scientists at the Universities of Pittsburgh, British Columbia, Sussex, Montreal, Alabama and Kings College London on adolescent personality problems, autism, peer relations and antisocial development, respectively. These contacts have resulted in substantial research grants for longitudinal research and PhD student exchange; - a joint international project with a.o. Michigan University into the use of new methods of systematic video-data-analysis (CEPE, Developmental Education in the school context); - a successful contribution to the European Commission funded 3-yrs project within Framework 6 Religion in Education: A contribution to Dialogue or a factor of Conflict in transforming societies of European countries (CEPE, Education, Morality and Religion). 9

Members of AZIRE have been invited to join extra-academic committees, for example in the field of educational policy. In addition, national collaborations with academic, societal and commercial organisations have been set up and extended. Among the societal partners are schools for primary and secondary education, mental health institutes, food industry, educational publishers, teacher organisations and education support organisations.
