1 Dossier Abdullah Al-Mansouri DOSSIER ABDULLAH AL-MANSOURI English version below Op 14 mei 2006 werd de Amnestygroep Maastricht door Adnan, zoon van Abdullah, gebeld met de mededeling dat op 11 mei zijn vader gearresteerd was in Syrië. N.a.v. dit telefoontje werd meteen een steungroep opgericht voor Abdullah, actief lid van de Amnestygroep in Maastricht. Deze steungroep ging vanaf dat moment de acties voor Abdullah voorbereiden. Het nationale secretariaat in Amsterdam en het internationale secretariaat in Londen werden op de hoogte gesteld. Al snel kwam er vanuit Londen een Urgent Action zodat er brieven konden worden geschreven naar de autoriteiten in Syrië. De steungroep besloot spoedig om een actie te gaan organiseren bij de ambassade van Syrië in Brussel. In het overleg met de politie van Brussel om een verguning te verkrijgen, bleek dat de ambassadeur bereid was om met een delegatie van Amnesty te spreken op voorwaarde dat er vooralsnog geen demonstratie zou plaatsvinden. In overleg met het secretariaat in Amsterdam, besloot de steungroep de uitnodiging van de ambassadeur te aanvaarden. Op maandag 12 juni 2006 was er een gesprek waarbij 3 leden van Amnesty Maasricht aanwezig waren. Tevens was een vertegenwoordiger van het nationaal secretariaat aanwezig en de directeur van de Waalse Amnestysectie. Ondanks herhaaldelijk aandringen, hebben we tevergeefs zitten wachten op de informatie die ons door de ambassadeur in dat gesprek beloofd was. In overleg met het secretariaat werd na enige weken alsnog besloten om de demonstratie bij de ambassade te gaan houden. Op vrijdag 4 augustus 2006 ging vanuit Maastricht een bus met een 60-tal actievoerders naar Brussel, waar in de stromende regen gescandeerd werd: wij willen Al-Mansouri zien. Kort na deze demonstratie kwam de officiële bevestiging dat Abdullah al op 16 mei 2006 was uitgeleverd aan Iran. Vanuit het secretariaat in Amsterdam werd een actieteam samengesteld om uitgebreid te gaan demonstreren voor de Iraanse ambassade in Den Haag. Besloten werd om gedurende 3 weken een Amnesty actie-caravan voor de ambassade te plaatsen. Tevens werd gekozen voor 3 specifieke actiedagen. Op 2 oktober 2006 was de openingsactie waarbij Eduard Nazarski, directeur van Amnesty Nederland en Adnan, zoon van Abdullah, aanwezig waren. Op 9 oktober 2006 was er opnieuw een bus met actievoerders vanuit Maastricht aanwezig voor een lawaaidemonstratie bij de ambassade. Naast Amnestyleden bestond de Maastrichtse delegatie o.a. uit de familie Al-Mansouri en hun vrienden en ook een aantal leden van Groen Links Maastricht, waarvoor Abdullah actief was geweest. Bij de demonstratie op 9 oktober was ook weer Nazarski aanwezig. Ook burgemeester Leers was naar Den Haag gekomen om aandacht te vragen voor de situatie van zijn stadsgenoot. Tijdens de demonstratie hebben Nazarski en Leers samen met de kamerleden Koenders en Karimi een gesprek gehad met de ambassadeur. Op 16 oktober 2006 was de afsluiting van de ambassade-actie met de aanwezigheid van advocaat Spong die bereid was om een visum aan te vragen om Abdullah in Iran te verdedigen bij een eventueel proces. In november 2006 kreeg de Amnestygroep Maastricht van Groen Links Maastricht de Gezonde Stadsprijs vanwege haar inzet voor Abdullah Al-Mansouri. Het geldbedrag dat aan deze prijs verbonden was, werd door de groep aan de familie van Abdullah gegeven om hen een kleine financiële ondersteuning te geven in deze periode waarin men de steun van echtgenoot en vader zo moet missen. De jaarlijkse fakkeltocht van Amnesty Maastricht t.g.v. 10 december, Internationale Dag van de Rechten van de Mens stond in 2006 geheel in het teken van de acties voor Abdullah Al-Mansouri. Ondersteund door sympathisanten en opnieuw Groen Links liepen een 60-tal demonstranten op zaterdag 9 december 2006 door het centrum van Maastricht naar de muurschildering op de Kakeberg. Ook in 2007 gingen de acties voor Abdullah onverminderd door. Adnan maakte in de landelijke media (Netwerk) bekend dat hij telefonisch contact had gehad met zijn vader waardoor de familie in ieder geval wist dat Abdullah nog in leven was. Ook lokaal en regionaal kreeg deze bekendmaking veel aandacht in de media. De Amnestygroep Maastricht kreeg van burgemeester Leers de toezegging dat hij bereid was om lokaal de landelijke collecteweek van Amnesty (11-17 februari 2007) te openen. Ook deze collecteweek stond in het teken van Abdullah.. Op zaterdag 10 februari 2007 werd door burgemeester Leers symbolisch de collecteweek geopend in bijzijn van een 40- tal actievoerders en collectanten. De collectanten kregen actiekaarten mee om uit te delen aan degenen die een bijdrage in de collectebussen deponeerden. Op 28 februari maakt burgemeester Leers bekend voorlopig pas op de plaats te maken in de zaak Al Mansouri. Dit besluit viel naar aanleiding van de bekendmaking in een Netwerkuitzending dat er regelmatig contact is tussen Adullah en zijn familie en ook de politieke context helder is geworden. Op de achtergrond blijft Leers echter actief en blijkt regelmatig goed op de hoogte van de nieuwste ontwikkelingen. Op vrijdag 11 mei jl. werd door het secretariaat van Amnesty International in Amsterdam een actie georganiseerd bij de ambassade van Iran in Den Haag omdat het die dag precies 1 jaar geleden was dat Abdullah Al-Mansouri, lid van de Amnestygroep in Maastricht, werd opgepakt in Syrië. Zoals bekend, werd hij kort daarna uitgeleverd aan Iran, waar hij nog steeds gevangen gehouden wordt. Omdat de actie bij de ambassade gepland was van uur, vertrok de delegatie vanuit Maastricht al voor 7.00 uur met de trein en met de auto. De amnestygroep Maastricht was met een aantal leden aanwezig en ook de familie van

2 Abdullah (zijn vrouw en 4 kinderen) was in Den Haag aanwezig. Tevens waren een aantal secretariaatsmedewerkers van Amnesty aanwezig, de directeur van Amnesty Nederland, Eduard Nazarsky en een grote groep vertegenwoordigers van de ALO (Ahwaz Liberation Organisation). De politiek was vertegenwoordigd door het 2e kamerlid van Groen Links, Mariko Peters. Al met al stonden we met een groep van ruim 40 personen voor de Iraanse ambassade. Ook de caravan, die in oktober weken voor de ambassade stond, was aanwezig ter ondersteuning van de ambassade-actie. De pers was goed vertegenwoordigd (TV: o.a. netwerk, radio: o.a. Wereldomroep en kranten: o.a. Trouw). Om uur startte de actie met het scanderen van de leus wij willen Abdullah Al-Mansouri zien, wij wachten al 1 jaar. Ook werd er een gedicht voorgedragen in het Farsi, waarna de Nederlandse vertaling gezongen werd. Daarna volgden korte toespraken van Eduard Nazarsky en Mariko Peters. Rond uur belden Eduard en Mariko bij de ambassade aan met het verzoek om een gesprek te hebben met de Iraanse ambassadeur. Nadat zij de ambassade waren binnengegaan, gingen wij nog een half uur door met het scanderen. Om uur werd ons door de aanwezige politie verzocht om de spandoeken te verwijderen en te stoppen met het scanderen. Daarna moesten we nog ruim 1 uur wachten op Nazarsky en Peters die rond uur weer naar buiten kwamen. Nazarsky vertelde de aanwezige demonstranten en persmensen kort de inhoud van het gesprek, dat hij kenmerkte als pittig en soms vervelend. De belangrijkste resultaten van het gesprek waren de toezeggingen van de ambassadeur dat hij ons gaat informeren over de plaats waar Abdullah gevangen zit, zijn gezondheidstoestand en de stand van zaken rondom zijn proces en waarvan hij beschuldigd wordt. Tevens zou het mogelijk zijn dat Abdullah consulaire bijstand krijgt. De ambassadeur gaf aan dat Abdullah verdacht wordt van terrorisme, dat hij goed behandeld wordt en dat hij medische hulp kan krijgen, als dit noodzakelijk is. Eduard Nazarsky en Mariko Peters gaven aan dat zij nauwlettend in de gaten zullen houden of de ambassadeur zijn beloftes nakomt. Mariko zal de minister van Buitenlandse Zaken vragen om ervoor te zorgen dat de consulaire bijstand ook daadwerkelijk tot stand zal komen. Al met al kunnen we terugkijken op een demonstratie die opnieuw de situatie van Abdullah in de publiciteit heeft gebracht. Ook de druk op de ambassade is opgevoerd. In het gesprek gaf de ambassadeur te kennen dat hij niet blij was met de demonstratie. Maar zolang wij geen informatie krijgen over de verblijfplaats van Abdullah, over zijn gezondheidssituatie en zolang consulaire bijstand geweigerd wordt, zullen wij actie blijven voeren bij de ambassade. Op zaterdag 12 mei jl. had de Amnestygroep Maastricht een lawaaitocht georganiseerd door de binnenstad van Maastricht. Om uur vertrok de tocht vanaf het centraal station. Ruim 60 personen waren aanwezig. Leden van Amnesty Maastricht, familieleden, ALO-mensen en vertegenwoordigers van de politiek liepen mee en scandeerden dezelfde leuzen zoals in Den Haag, afwisselend in het Nederlands en het Engels. Onderweg werden honderden actiekaarten uitgedeeld aan het publiek, dat ondanks de winkelsluiting, nog massaal aanwezig was. Via het Vrijthof bereikte de stoet het eindpunt: de mensenrechten-muurschildering op de Kakeberg (Tongersestraat). Op de Kakeberg sprak Adnan, zoon van Abdullah, de demonstranten kort toe en bedankte allen voor hun aanwezigheid. Namens Amnesty Maastricht gaf Gérard Prickaerts aan dat we ook de komende tijd actie zullen blijven voeren voor Abdullah en bedankte iedereen voor de ondersteuning bij de acties. Behalve alle bovengenoemde activiteiten werd ook nog veel geschreven voor Abdullah Al-Mansouri en medelotgenoten d.m.v. urgent acties en het versturen van vele duizenden actiekaarten. Het landelijke secretariaat deed een oproep aan alle Amnestygroepen in Nederland om zoveel mogelijk actiekaarten te verspreiden en te laten ondertekenen. Op donderdag 31 mei 2007 woonde een delegatie van de groep Maastricht de lezing bij die de pas aangetreden nieuwe minister voor Buitenlandse Zaken, Maxime Verhagen, in zijn geboorteplaats.maastricht hield. Tijdens de lezing zette de minister zijn beleid uiteen en benadrukte dat mensenrechten een eikpunt zal zijn daarin. Hij begon zijn speech met het noemen van Abdullah Al Mansouri. Na afloop kreeg de groep gelegenheid om de minister vijf minuten te spreken en hij zegde toe in elk contact met Iran de zak aan te kaarten. Er zijn gedurende de zomermanden vele activiteiten waarbij de groep Maastricht en daarom hen aandacht heeft gevraagd voor Al Mansouri. Regelmatig kregen we ook berichten van andere groepen dat ze actie voerden voor A. Zo was er het virusfestival in Eindhoven. (3 juni) Ook was er de onthulling van het mensenrechtenmonument van de groep Westelijke Mijnstreek in het bijzijn van Eduard Nazarski.(30 juni) En er was de manifestatie Heerlen in de Wereld.(september) In Maastricht werd door de studentengroep en bijeenkomst georganiseerd (9 juni). Ook maakte de lokale omroep een uitgebreide reportage van de zaak. In Maastricht werd nog actiegevoerd tijdens het Manus festival (24 juni), BoerderijPop(10 augustus)en Welkom in maastricht (2 september) Op zondagavond 28 oktober werden we opgeschrikt door het bericht van en Syrische mensenrechtenorganisatie dat het doodvonnis tegen Abdullah Al Mansouri, Rasoul Mazrae, en Mr. Said Saki. Onmiddellijk werd er op alle fronten actie ondernomen. Behalve de massale mediabelangstelling werden er op dinsdag 30 oktober kamerbreed vragen gesteld aan minister Verhagen en zegde deze toe een topdelegatie van BZ naar Iran te sturen om meer duidelijkheid te krijgen over het lot van Abdullah. Avonds werd er in Den Haag en in Maastricht een wake gehouden. In Maastricht was dit het startschot voor een estafettewake die we drie weken hebben volgehouden elke avond, daarna elke donderdag en na 10 december elke laatste donderdag van de maand. Op zaterdag 4 november werden er in anderhalf uur tijd 700 handtekeningen opgehaald voor het intrekken van het doodvonnis en een eerlijk proces voor Abdullah. Half november bracht de Nederlandse delegatie een bezoek aan Iran en heeft ongeveer drie kwartier met Abdullah gesproken. Dit was het eerste echte contact tussen Abdullah en de nederlandse autoriteiten sinds zijn arrestatie anderhalf jaar daarvoor. Opnieuw heeft Nederland haar eisen overgebracht aangaande een eerlijk en openbaar proces

3 en aangaande de consulaire bijstand. Op 8 en 10 december voerde de groep Maastricht een geslaagde actie voor Abdullah. Rondom mensenrechtendag. Op 10 december was er een manifestatie met kooroptreden in het Stadhuis. Hieraan werkten mee wethouder en hoogleraar Internationaal Recht. Er waren ongeveer 250 mensen aanwezig. Begin januari 2008 werden we weer opgeschrikt door de executie van 4 Ahwazi. Bij de onrust die daarna volgde werden vele honderden mensen opgepakt. Op 1 februari volgde nog de executie van een prominent ALO lid en bevestigde de hoofdaanklager dat het leven van de drie gevangenen direct in gevaar is. Sinds die tijd is er geen nieuws meer vernomen. We gaan door met actievoeren zolang het nodig is. We zullen Abdullah niet vergeten en blijven vragen om een eerlijk en openbaar proces en consulaire bijstand. Peter van Neer Groep 324 Amnesty International Maastricht PERSONAL INFORMATION Name: Faleh Abdoullah Al-Mansouri Date of birth: September 23, 1945 Place of birth: city of Ahvaz, Iran Place of residence: Maastricht, the Netherlands Probable whereabouts: Karoun prison in the city of Ahvaz, Iran Nationality: Dutch (since 1997) Marital status: married, four children After leaving secondary school, Abdoullah Al-Mansouri entered the Military Academy and subsequently became a military officer. FROM IRAN TO THE NETHERLANDS While still in Iran, Abdoullah Al-Mansouri became active in politics. He struggled for the independence of the ethnic minority group of Ahvazi. In the late 1980ies, during the war between Iran and Iraq, Mr. Al-Mansouri deserted Iranian army. For fear of severe punishment, he left Iran in He was granted refugee status under the UNHCR's Mandate and finally came to the Netherlands. Abdoullah Al-Mansouri settled in Maastricht where he became an active member of the Committee for Assistance to Refugees, Amnesty International and the Green-Left political party. He did a lot of volunteer work, including assistance to the inhabitants of an elderly people's home and to refugees. For his important social work the Queen awarded him membership in the Order of Orange-Nassau in When in the Netherlands, Abdoullah Al-Mansouri still continued fighting for independence of 'Al-Ahvaz'. He was one of the founders of the Ahvaz Liberation Organization (ALO) and became its Chairman. AHVAZI Ahvazi is one of the numerous ethnic minority groups residing in Iran. Ahvazi consititute from 3 to 8 per cent of the total population of that country. Most Ahvazi live in Khuzistan, the province abounding in oil. Ahvazi call Khuzistan 'Al-Ahvaz'. Ahvazi are being oppressed and discriminated by Iranian authorities. For example, Ahvazi do not enjoy the same rights as the majority of the population in what concerns housing, education and employment. Social and economic deprivation among Ahvazi has resulted in public unrest in the province of Khuzistan for decades. The most recent persecution campaign began in the spring of 2005, when, according to rumors, all Ahvazi were to be exiled to other provinces and thus to be scattered all over Iran. The rumors were followed by numerous protest marches and demonstrations. Meanwhile, the law-enforcement authorities were becoming increasingly aggressive. Dozens of Ahvazi were killed, hundreds were wounded. In addition, hundreds of Ahvazi were imprisoned. Many prisoners are believed to be tortured. The 2005 and 2006 bomb attacks were followed by mass detainment campaigns when hundreds of Ahvazi, including wives and children of the suspects, were kept in custody. Dozens, if not hundreds of Ahvazi were also arrested during peaceful demonstrations. After the court proceedings which had nothing to do with a fair trial, dozens of people suspected of organizing the bomb attacks were sentenced to death. DETAINMENT AND IMPRISONMENT

4 Abdoullah Al-Mansouri was arrested in Syria on May 11, He had come to Syria in order to meet Ahvazi refugees. Five days later, on May 16, Syrian authorities extradited him to Iran. His whereabouts are unknown. He is believed to be in the Karoun prison in the city of Ahvaz. After extradition, nothing was known about Mr. Al-Mansouri until March 2007, when he was allowed to have a short telephone conversation with his wife and children who live in the Netherlands. They say that he seemed to be 'weak and exhausted'. The trial took place in June and July 2007 behind the closed doors. It is unknown what were the accusations. It was very unlikely that Mr. Al-Mansouri could choose the lawyer. Representatives of the Dutch embassy were not allowed to enter the building of the court, in spite of the fact that, back in December 2006, Mr. Mottaki, the Iranian Minister of Foreign Affairs, had promised his Dutch colleague, Mr. Bot, that there would be 'an open trial' for Mr. Al-Mansouri and that Dutch observers would be invited to the court. According to the rumors which reached mass media in October 2007, Abdoullah Al-Mansouri was sentenced to death. Iranian authorities denied it, but provided no further details concerning the case of Mr. Al-Mansouri. In November 2007, the ambassador of Iran in the Netherlands said that Mr. Al-Mansouri had confessed organizing several terrorist attacks. Amnesty International asked the ambassador to provide more information about the case. No evidence of Mr. Al- Mansouri being involved in terrorism has been provided. In the autumn of 2007, a representative of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs was allowed to meet Mr. Al-Mansouri. They talked for 45 minutes under the supervision of Iranian officials. During the conversation, Mr. Al-Mansouri seemed to stress that he was in good health. According to international laws, Iranian authorities are obliged to allow support of Dutch authorities for Mr. Al-Mansouri because he is a citizen of the Netherlands. The short conversation with a representative of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs is far from being what the term 'support of Dutch authorities' implies. Iranian authorities have never fulfilled their obligation. They deny the fact that Mr. Al-Mansouri is a Dutch citizen. For two years, Amnesty International and Dutch authorities have been asking Iranian officials to provide whatever definite information about the case. This demand was expressed during several official visits, as well as during demonstrations held at the Iranian embassy. Among those who tried to arrange for negotiations with Iranian authorities in connection with the case of Abdoullah Al-Mansouri were Mr. Nazarski, director of the Dutch section of Amnesty International, and Mr. Leers, Mayor of Maastricht, as well as the former PMs Mr. Koenders, Ms. Koser Kaya, Mr. Wilders, Mr. Van Bommel, Ms. Karimi and Ms. Peters. Representatives of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs have many times asked Iranian authorities to provide explanations concerning the case of Mr. Al-Mansouri. Representatives of the European Commission and Mr. Kofi Annan, the former UN Secretary-General, have also discussed this matter with Iranian authorities. For two years, Iranian authorities have refused to provide whatever exact information concerning the case of Abdoullah Al-Mansouri. CAMPAIGNING FOR ABDOULLAH AL-MANSOURI Brief information about the campaigning Since his imprisonment in May 2006, representatives of Amnesty International have been trying to learn what has really happened to Abdoullah Al-Mansouri. Many people, including political leaders, have signed Amnesty's petition demanding the permission to see Mr. Al-Mansouri. On Monday, June 12, 2006, a delegation of the Dutch section of Amnesty International and the French-speaking Belgian section of Amnesty International met the Syrian ambassador in Brussels. In spite of the promises of the Syrian ambassador, Amnesty International received no concrete evidence of what had happened to Mr. Al-Mansouri. Soon it was officially confirmed that Mr. Al-Mansouri had been extradited to Iran on May 16, Since learning about Mr. Al-Mansouri's extradition to Iran, representatives of Amnesty International have many times reminded Iranian authorities about their international obligations connected with the case of Mr. Al-Mansouri. About twenty letters and fax messages with questions about Mr. Al-Mansouri's situation were sent to Iranian authorities. Iranian authorities paid no attention to the letters sent by Amnesty International. Then delegations of Amnesty International visited the Iranian embassy and demanded the following: - information concerning Mr. Al-Mansouri's whereabouts; - making it possible for Mr. Al-Mansouri to choose the lawyer; - making it possible for Dutch authorities to have access to all evidence connected with the case and to be present in the court; - fair trial for Mr. Al-Mansouri; - torture prevention; - medical aid for Mr. Al-Mansouri whenever he needs it.

5 In October 2006, a campaign for Abdoullah Al-Mansouri began in front of the Iranian embassy in the Hague. Surrounded by posters with portraits of Mr. Al-Mansouri and with the words: 'We want to see Mr. Al-Mansouri!' (in Dutch and in Farsi), Eduard Nazarski, director of the Dutch section of Amnesty International, and the MP Fatma Koser Kaya (of the D66 political party) conducted the opening ceremony of the Al-Mansouri Visitors' Center - a caravan where newspaper articles, photographs of Mr. Al-Mansouri and the slogan of the campaign were exhibited. Then Mr. Nazarski and Ms. Koser Kaya asked the ambassador to ensure that it would be possible for Dutch officials to meet Mr. Al-Mansouri. Mr. Nazarski and Ms. Koser Kaya also said to the ambassador that Iranian authorities should tell what Mr. Al-Mansouri was accused of, and, if there were no accusations, Mr. Al-Mansouri should be freed. The Al-Mansouri Visitors' Center remained in front of the Iranian embassy for two weeks. On MOnday, October 2, 2006, Eduard Nazarski, director of the Dutch section of Amnesty International, applied for an Iranian visa in order to visit Mr. Al-Mansouri. Mr. Nazarski has never received the visa. On Wednesday, October 4, 2006, Mr. Bozorgmehr Ziaran, the Iranian ambassador in the Hague, received a CD with a recording of Mr. Leers, Mayor of Maastricht speaking over the radio. Mr. Leers expressed his concern about the dangers faced by an inhabitant of Maastricht - Mr. Al-Mansouri. Together with the CD the ambassador received a letter written by Eduard Nazarski and an English translation of the recording. On Monday, October 9, 2006, Mr. Bozorgmehr Ziaran, the Iranian ambassador in the Hague, met a delegation consisting of Mr. Leers, Mayor of Maastricht, Eduard Nazarski and the MPs Bert Koenders (of the PvdA political party) and Farah Karimi (of Green-Left). The ambassador did not deny the fact that imprisonment of Mr. Al-Mansouri contradicted international laws and regulations. Yet the ambassador said that he had received from Teheran too little information about the case. So he could not answer the two most important questions of the representatives of Amnesty International: 'In what prison is Abdoullah Al-Mansouri?' and 'What are the accusations?' At the same time, people were campaigning for Abdoullah Al-Mansouri at the entrance to the embassy. On Thursday, October 12, 2006, in the evening, members of the Hague group of Amnesty International campaigned in front of the Iranian embassy in the Hague. About 200 candles placed at the entrance to the embassy formed the sentence 'We want to see Mr. Al-Mansouri!' On Friday, May 11, 2007, it was precisely one year since detainment of Faleh Abdoullah Al-Mansouri in Damascus (Syria). Members of Amnesty International and many other people gathered in front of the Iranian embassy on May 11 in to express their concern about the case of Mr. Al-Mansouri and also to try and find out what had really happened to him. People who were in front of the embassy listened to the speeches of Eduard Nazarski and the MP Mariko Peters (of Green-Left). Mr. Nazarski gave to the ambassador a petition in support of Mr. Al-Mansouri with three thousand signatures. Among those who campaigned in front of the Iranian embassy were members of the Maastricht group of Amnesty International (of which Mr. Al-Mansouri was also a member) and the family of Mr. Al-Mansouri. Amnesty International received sad news from a number of different sources. According to some sources, the trial of Mr. Al-Mansouri took place on June 13, on July 13 and on July 30 behind the closed doors. In spite of the promises of Iranian authorities, Dutch diplomats were not allowed to be in the court. Mr. Al-Mansouri must have had no chance to choose the lawyer. On October 28, 2007, sadder news came from Syria: according to rumors, Abdoullah Al-Mansouri, Rasoul Mazrae and Said Saki had been sentenced to death. After hearing about it, many people began to act immediately. The case of Abdoullah Al-Mansouri and the threat of death penalty were covered by most Dutch mass media. On October 30, members of the Dutch Parliament asked Minister Verhagen for help. He said that a delegation of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs would be sent to Iran in order to find out what had happened to Mr. Al-Mansouri. Every evening, people were campaigning in front of the Iranian embassy in the Hague and in front of the Mayor's Office in Maastricht. These campaigns were attracting increasingly great attention of mass media to the case of Mr. Al-Mansouri. Petitions with thousands of signatures were sent to Iranian authorities. In November 2007, the delegation of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs visited Iran. Members of the delegation were allowed to meet Mr. Al-Mansouri and to talk to him for 45 minutes. For the first time since his detainment, Mr. Al- Mansouri was allowed to meet Dutch officials. Once more Dutch authorities demanded that Mr. Al-Mansouri have an open and fair trial, as well as a possibility to meet Dutch diplomats and to benefit from their assistance. Friday, May 16, 2008: two years in Iranian prison. Campaign in the Hague On May 16, 2008, it was precisely two years since the day when Abdoullah Al-Mansouri had been sent to Iranian prison. For two years, there has been no fair trial. On May 16, 2008, members of the Dutch section of Amnesty International came to the Iranian embassy one more time. On 9.00 a.m., they began to make a wall in front of the embassy. Stripes were placed on the wall (symbolizing a prison wall). The number of the stripes was the same as the number of the days that Mr. Al-Mansouri had spent in prison. The ambassador 'was too busy and had no time' to meet Eduard Nazarski and

6 three MPs who were waiting for him at the entrance to the embassy building. The ambassador also refused to receive the petitions under the pretext of being 'too busy'.
