5 Voortgangsverslag van de programmaleider De start van het programma is iets trager verlopen dan aanvankelijk was gepland. PhD1- project is als eerste gestart per 1 april 2009, gevolgd door PhD2-project per 1 september In de loop van 2011 zijn enkele van de overige projecten opgestart, zodat het programma inmiddels concrete vormen krijgt. Lopende projecten PhD1 'Coalescence and break-up of droplets: flow in and around the droplets' Promovendus: Oldenziel; begeleiding: Westerweel / Boersma; start 1 april De experimentele faciliteit is in bedrijf en de eerste goede meetresultaten zijn verkregen: metingen aan botsing tussen twee druppels in een brekingsindex-gematchte vloeistof. Er zijn snelheidsmetingen uitgevoerd in het stromingsveld tussen en in de bellen tijdens het 'kissing & tumbling'-gedrag. Deze resultaten zullen binnenkort gepresenteerd worden bij een internationale conferentie. PhD2 'Resolved DNS of droplet coalescence and break-up in turbulence' Promovenda: Talebanfard; begeleiding: Boersma / Portela / Mudde; start 1 september Alles verloopt volgens de gemaakte planning: na de inwerkperiode wordt nu gestart met de eerste simulaties. De samenwerking tussen PhD1 en PhD2 verloopt goed. Het ligt in de planning om in 2010 te beginnen met de studie van het coalescentie- en condensatiegedrag van een druppel bij een Reynoldsgetal Re = O(100), als bouwsteen voor implementatie in een groter model met veel druppels O(1000). Planning voor 2011 In het jaar 2011 zijn / worden enkele van de overige projecten opgestart: PhD5 'Droplet-turbulence dynamics under heterogeneous conditions' Promovendus: Perrin; begeleiding: Portela / Mudde / Westerweel; start 1 januari Er zijn reeds goede vorderingen gemaakt, zowel met de numerieke simulatiecodes en de experimentele opstelling. PhD6 'How gravity, shear and coalescence modify the droplet size distribution' Promovendus: van Hinsberg; begeleiding: Toschi / Clercx; start 1 februari Dit project loopt zeer voorspoedig, en de eerste resultaten worden binnenkort gepresenteerd in de vorm van conferentiebijdrage en artikel. PhD3 'Dynamics, collisions and coalescence of droplets in turbulence' Promovendus: vacature; begeleiding: Clercx / Kunnen / van Heijst; start medio Er lijkt een uitstekende kandidaat voor deze vacature beschikbaar te zijn. PhD7 'Clustering in turbulent droplet ensembles: the role of phase transitions' Promovendus: vacature; begeleiding: Geurts / Kuerten / Lohse ; start 1 juli Er is een uitstekende kandidaat voor deze vacature beschikbaar. PhD8 'Global heat transfer in turbulent flow with droplets' Promovendus: vacature; begeleiding: Lohse / Toschi / Geurts; start najaar

6 Er is een uitstekende kandidaat voor deze vacature beschikbaar. Voortgang Weliswaar is de start enigszins vertraagd ten opzichte van de aanvankelijke plannen, samenhangende met de moeilijkheid om voor bepaalde vacatures uitstekend gekwalificeerde invulling te vinden, momenteel is het programma goed in gang gezet. Er is in dit stadium nog niet veel aan concrete wapenfeiten (publicaties in journals, presentaties, etc.) te melden, maar naar verwachting zal dat over het verslagjaar 2011 wel het geval zijn. Het programma is zodanig opgezet dat de projecten onderlinge samenhang hebben. De inmiddels opgestarte projecten laten die kruisbestuiving al in enige mate zien, maar deze zal naar verwachting pas echt goed zichtbaar worden als alles in volle gang is, dus eind Het project PhD4 'Clustering of small droplets in turbulence' (vacature; begeleiding: Van de Water / Van Heijst) zal in de loop van 2012 worden opgestart, waarmee dan alle projecten binnen het programma actief zijn. Verder dient hier vermeld te worden: PhD-project 'The sling effect: clustering of inertial turbulence' Promovendus: Bocanegra Evans; begeleiding: van de Water / Van Heijst; start 1 oktober Dit is een flankerend project gefinancierd vanuit de FOM-Projectruimte, en er is directe aansluiting met de PhD3- en PhD5-projecten in het DROP-programma. In dit project is een 'turbulentie-machine' ontwikkeld en gebouwd, waarmee een wolk druppels in turbulente gasstroming kan worden gegenereerd en bestudeerd. Met behulp van fosforescerende druppels is het gedrag van de druppelwolk onderzocht. De eerste resultaten worden in de loop van dit jaar tijdens de 13 th European Turbulence Conference (Warsaw, Poland) gepresenteerd, en een publicatie is in voorbereiding

G.J.F. van Heijst Duration Cost estimate M 2.6 Concise programme description a. Objectives The programme focuses on the key fundamental issues of turbulent droplet dynamics. For example, on the smallest turbulent length scales, droplets are spun from vortices, collect in regions of strain, and, in turn, influence the turbulent flow itself. Droplets mutually interact, split and coalesce, and can undergo phase transitions such as evaporation and condensation. On macroscopic length scales, gravity-induced settling, mean shear and temperature gradients will influence the dynamics and size distribution of the droplets. The aim of the programme is a better quantitative and fundamental understanding of the dynamics of droplets in turbulent flows. b. Background, relevance and implementation Fundamental insight on how turbulent flows and phase transitions affect the droplet size distribution is of vital importance for enhancing the energy efficiency of internal combustion engines. Understanding turbulent droplet dynamics is also important for optimized production of natural gas and CO 2 capturing. On larger scales, the dispersion and merging of droplets in turbulent atmospheric clouds is crucial for describing the influence of clouds on our climate. Other applications, involving droplets in liquids, can be found in the food industry (e.g., properties of dispersions and suspensions) and in biomedical applications. The programme is carried out by a number of 3TU fluid-dynamics groups. In recent years these groups have built up various new experimental techniques (such as 3D particle tracking velocimetry, 3D particle image velocimetry, Lagrangian tracking, hot-film anemometry) and computational tools (such as front-tracking, volume of fluid methods, spectral Euler- Lagrangian codes) in the context of the FOM programme 'Dispersed multiphase flow' and the FOM programme 'Turbulence and its role in energy conversion processes'. This experimental and computational expertise is now combined and further developed in this programme
