2 Luisteren, hoe leren kinderen dat? Obedience: how do children learn to listen? Kinderen hebben grenzen en regels nodig. Ze zorgen voor duidelijkheid en veiligheid en ze leren hen omgaan met anderen. Verwacht niet van kinderen dat ze altijd luisteren. Maar als je ze leert om te luisteren, wordt de opvoeding ook voor jou wat gemakkelijker. Children need boundaries and rules, providing them with clarity and safety and teaching them how to treat others. Don t expect children to always listen to you. However, if you teach them to listen, it will make it easier for you to raise them. Waarom luisteren kinderen niet? Omdat: - ze er hun zin door kunnen krijgen. - ze kunnen ontsnappen aan iets dat ze niet willen doen. - ze ongewild extra aandacht krijgen wanneer ze niet luisteren. Blijf dus niet herhalen. Dat is enkel extra aandacht. - ouders niet rechtlijnig zijn. De ene dag laten ze toe dat hun kind niet luistert. De andere dag verwachten ze dat het onmiddellijk alle instructies opvolgt.

3 Why do children disobey? Because: - it helps them get their way. - they can escape from something they don t want to do. - they unconsciously get extra attention by not listening. Therefore, don t keep repeating things. That merely means more attention. - parents are not straightforward. One day their child is allowed not to listen; the other day they expect it to immediately follow all the instructions. Richtlijnen of opdrachten geven. Hoe doe je dat goed? Let op je lichaamstaal Het is verwarrend voor kinderen als je met een lachend gezicht zegt dat ze ergens mee moeten ophouden. Roep ook niet vanuit een andere kamer. Zo kan je de opdracht nooit genoeg kracht bijzetten.

5 Mind your body language It is confusing for children when you tell them to stop doing something with a smile on your face. Don t yell at them from another room either, because in that way you will never be able to enforce your instructions. 6 Hoe ga je om met ongehoorzaamheid? How do you deal with disobedience? Niet luisteren heeft gevolgen Blijven waarschuwen zonder dat er iets gebeurt, helpt niet. Als je kind niet binnen de 5 seconden doet wat je zegt, heeft dat gevolgen. Laat je kind bijvoorbeeld 10 tot 15 minuten niet meer spelen. Leg uit waarom je dat doet, maar negeer protest en ga niet in discussie. Voer de straf gewoon door. Disobedience has consequences Repeatedly warning children without anything actually happening, doesn t help. If your child doesn t do what you ask within five seconds, that behavior should have consequences. You could for instance not allow your child to play for ten to fifteen minutes. Explain why you are doing this, but ignore protest and don t go into a discussion. Simply carry out the punishment. Als je kind toch niet luistert en doorgaat met zijn ongewenste gedrag of als het zich binnen een uur opnieuw slecht gedraagt, herhaal je de straf, maar dan langer (bijvoorbeeld de rest van de dag). Tijdens die minuten geef je het geen aandacht. Als je kind niet wil stilzitten, kies je beter voor een time-out. Bij een timeout zet je je kind even apart in een saaie maar veilige ruimte. Zo laat je merken dat je het echt meent. Zeg tegen je kind dat het 2 minuten rustig moet zijn voordat het weer binnen mag. Probeer rustig te blijven, hoe

7 heftig je kind ook protesteert. Herinner je kind eraan dat de tijd pas ingaat als het rustig is. De eerste time-outs kosten misschien wat moeite, maar na een paar keer zal je zien dat ze werken en dat je ze steeds minder nodig hebt. A quiet moment or time-out If you can t think of a logical punishment or your child keeps acting up, opt for a quiet moment. Put your child somewhere else in the same room to sit still in a quiet place of your choice. Tell your child to remain calm and quiet in that place for two minutes. Pay no attention to the child during those two minutes. If your child doesn t want to sit still, you are better off with a time-out. A time-out means putting your child away in a dull but safe environment, so as to show that you re serious about this. Tell your child it has to remain quiet for two minutes before it can come back inside. Try to keep your calm, no matter how fiercely your child reacts. Remind the child that the time only starts running when it is quiet. The first time-outs may cost you some effort, but after a while you will notice that this method truly works and you will need to apply it less. Een nieuwe kans Is de time-out gedaan, breng je kind dan weer naar de plek waar het allemaal begon. Zeg nog eens wat je verwacht en geef je kind een complimentje als het meteen doet wat je zegt. Als je kind niet binnen 5 seconden luistert, herhaal je nogmaals het stilzitten of de time-out. Zeker bij kinderen die slecht luisteren, kost dat in het begin veel inspanning en lijkt het allemaal erg geforceerd. Maar als je volhoudt, word je beloond. Na een tijdje zal je kind leren om te doen wat hem wordt gezegd. A new chance When the time-out is finished, bring your child back to the place where it all started. Repeat once more what it is you expect and give your child a compliment if it immediately does what you ask. If your child doesn t listen within five seconds, repeat the quiet moment or time-out once more. Especially with children who don t tend to listen well, it takes a great effort in the beginning and it all seems rather artificial. But if you persevere, you will be rewarded. After a while, your child will learn to do as you say.

8 Aandachtspunten Het is normaal dat een kind af en toe niet luistert. Het wordt pas een probleem wanneer je kind minder dan de helft van jouw aanwijzingen opvolgt. In discussie gaan met een kind dat weigert te luisteren, heeft geen zin. Argumenteren geeft kinderen extra aandacht en dat werkt als een beloning, ook al bedoel je dat niet zo. Je moet je niet iedere keer verantwoorden. Doe je dat wel, dan moet één keer uitleggen genoeg zijn. Het is belangrijk dat kinderen ook zelf dingen kunnen bepalen. Je kan ze meer vrijheid geven door hen te laten kiezen uit wat jij voorstelt. Laat ze bijvoorbeeld kiezen of ze hun speelgoed voor of na het eten willen opruimen. Alleen bij dagelijkse gewoontes werkt het beter om niet te veel keuze te laten. Die moeten gewoon gebeuren. Focal points It is normal for a child not to listen once in a while. It only becomes problematic when your child hardly listens to half of your instructions. There is no use in trying to argue with a disobedient child. For children, arguing means extra attention. They perceive it as a reward, even though you don t mean it that way. You shouldn t have to justify everything. If you do want to justify something, explaining it once should suffice. It is important for children to be able to decide certain things themselves. You can give them more freedom by allowing them to choose between the options you propose. Let them for instance choose whether they want to pick up their toys before or after dinner. Only for everyday habits too much choice is not conducive. Those things simply have to be done.
