6 1 Algemene inleiding op het rapport 1.1 Doel en werkwijze Werkgroep Richtlijnen RDA In het kader van de introductie van RDA (Resource Description & Access) in Nederland is door de Programmacommissie SLIM 3.0 de Werkgroep Richtlijnen RDA in het leven geroepen. Deze werkgroep tracht door middel van dit rapport RDA beter toegankelijk te maken voor de catalogiseerders in Nederland; dit document is primair voor hen geschreven. De Werkgroep Richtlijnen RDA heeft de volgende uitgangspunten gehanteerd: - De structuur van de RDA Toolkit is leidend voor de structuur van het document. Als een catalogiseerder de RDA Toolkit raadpleegt, kan hij of zij snel in dit rapport opzoeken of, en zo ja, wat de Werkgroep Richtlijnen RDA over het betreffende onderwerp heeft opgemerkt. - De werkgroep heeft gekozen voor een praktische focus. Omdat RDA in de plaats komt van de huidige Regels voor de titelbeschrijving (RT) was een belangrijk aandachtsgebied het in kaart brengen van de verschillen tussen RDA en de Regels voor de titelbeschrijving, die in Nederland zijn uitgegeven door de FOBID. - De werkgroep is er vanuit gegaan dat de catalogiseerders in Nederland vertrouwd zijn met Beschrijvingsregels voor niet-seriële publikaties (RT/NS) en Beschrijvingsregels voor seriële publikaties (RT/S). Het rapport heeft het karakter van een inventarisatie. Het is niet leesvervangend voor de RDA Toolkit. Het is een hulpmiddel bij het zich eigen maken van RDA. 1.2 Structuur van dit rapport Na deze algemene inleiding komen de volgende onderwerpen aan bod Inleidende opmerkingen over RDA (hoofdstuk 2) Hoofdstuk 2 bevat enkele aanwijzingen en aandachtspunten die van belang zijn bij het raadplegen van de RDA Toolkit Alternatieven en opties binnen RDA (hoofdstuk 3) RDA bevat een aantal richtlijnen en instructies die als alternatief ( ) of als optie ( Optional Addition of Optional Omission ) zijn geformuleerd. De Werkgroep Richtlijnen RDA heeft vanuit een internationale visie zeer zorgvuldig de alternatieven en opties binnen RDA besproken. De werkgroep heeft niet voor weglatingen maar juist voor toevoegingen gekozen ten behoeve van identificatie en matching. Door voor toevoegingen te kiezen wil de werkgroep het uitwisselen van descriptieve metadata in bibliografische records met zo min mogelijk dubbele en onjuist gematchte records mogelijk maken. Naast het gemak voor de gebruikers om publicaties goed en snel te kunnen identificeren, denkt de werkgroep dat een snelle identificatie van manifestaties ook van groot belang is voor de catalogiseerders. Zij kunnen daardoor gemakkelijk en ondubbelzinnig een keuze maken tussen manifestaties onderling zodat de koppeling aan bibliografische records sneller kan worden uitgevoerd. De keuzes van de werkgroep voor of tegen alternatieven en opties zijn vanuit deze optiek gemaakt. Als de Stuurgroep GII en de FOBID de keuzes van de Werkgroep Richtlijnen RDA onderschrijven, en de keuzes daarmee veranderen in besluiten, dan houdt dit in dat leidend worden voor alle catalogiseerders in Nederland en daarmee onderdeel zijn van het officiële 6 van 81

7 Nederlandse RDA profiel; dit impliceert dat de individuele catalogiseerder of catalogiserende instelling niet zelf meer hoeft te beslissen over de alternatieven en opties. Dit is geheel in lijn met de algemeen geuite wens van catalogiserend Nederland voor eenduidigheid en uniformiteit in het toepassen van RDA. De keuzes van de Werkgroep Richtlijnen RDA staan in hoofdstuk Aandachtspunten voor de praktijk (hoofdstuk 4) De Werkgroep Richtlijnen RDA heeft een aanzienlijk aantal aandachtspunten voor het werken met RDA in de praktijk, op een rijtje gezet. Een belangrijk onderdeel hiervan zijn de punten waarin RDA afwijkt van de Regels voor de titelbeschrijving die in Nederland zijn uitgegeven door de FOBID. Omdat de Werkgroep Richtlijnen RDA slechts een beperkte tijd tot zijn beschikking had, heeft de werkgroep zich geconcentreerd op de volgende hoofdstukken van de RDA Toolkit: - 0 Introduction - Section 1: Recording Attributes of Manifestation & Item - 1 General guidelines on recording attributes of manifestations and items - 2 Identifying manifestations and items - 3 Describing carriers - 4 Providing acquisition and access information Ook vanwege de hierboven genoemde reden heeft de werkgroep zich (voorlopig) in principe beperkt tot de delen 1 en 2 van de Regels voor de titelbeschrijving: Beschrijvingsregels voor niet-seriële publikaties, kortweg RT/NS, en Beschrijvingsregels voor seriële publikaties, kortweg RT/S. In enkele gevallen zijn er verwijzingen opgenomen naar andere regelwerken van de FOBID. Hoofdstuk 4 behandelt de aandachtspunten voor de praktijk Core Elements van Manifestaties en Items (hoofdstuk 5) Hoofdstuk 5 is een kopie van paragraaf 1.3 Core Elements uit de RDA Toolkit. Deze Core Elements worden in het hoofdstuk genoemd waarin de aandachtspunten voor de praktijk in kaart zijn gebracht, maar het is praktisch om ze ook nog een keer in een apart overzicht bij elkaar te hebben Indexen op paragrafen uit RT/NS en RT/S (hoofdstuk 6) Aan dit rapport zijn twee indexen toegevoegd waarin verwezen wordt vanuit paragrafen uit Beschrijvingsregels voor niet-seriële publikaties (RT/NS) en Beschrijvingsregels voor seriële publikaties (RT/S) naar de verwante paragrafen in de RDA Toolkit. Voor de duidelijkheid: de indexen betreffen alleen die onderwerpen die anders in RDA worden benaderd dan in de RT of die naar het oordeel van de Werkgroep Richtlijnen RDA belangrijk zijn om te vermelden. De indexen staan in hoofdstuk Bijlage 1: In GGC worden facsimile s en reproducties anders behandeld dan in RT Het GGC wijkt af van RT/NS en RT/S wat betreft het beschrijven van facsimile s en reproducties. In het GGC fungeert de originele uitgave als uitgangspunt voor de 7 van 81

8 bibliografische beschrijving en de gegevens van de facsimile of reproductie worden daaraan toegevoegd. In RT/NS en RT/S, maar ook binnen RDA, zijn de gegevens van de facsimile of reproductie primair en de gegevens van het origineel secundair. Bijlage 1 is aan bovenstaand onderwerp gewijd. 1.3 To do list Werkgroep Richtlijnen RDA De Werkgroep Richtlijnen RDA hoopt in een later stadium toe te komen aan het toevoegen van verwijzingen naar de Regels voor de titelbeschrijving voor de overige materiaalsoorten. Ook het onderwerp catalogusbouw (RT/CAT) met betrekking tot de zoekingangen (entries) is tot nu toe buiten beschouwing gebleven. 9 2 Inleidende opmerkingen over RDA RDA maakt een duidelijke scheiding tussen het vastleggen van descriptieve metadata in bibliografische records en het presenteren ervan (RDA 0.1 Key Features): In order to optimize flexibility in the storage and display of the data produced using RDA, a clear line of separation has been established between the guidelines and instructions on recording data and those on the presentation of data. in de tekst van de RDA Toolkit zijn er ter illustratie. Paragrafen over de presentatie zijn alleen in de bijlagen te vinden, namelijk in Appendix D Record Syntaxes for Descriptive Data en Appendix E Record Syntaxes for Access Point Control. RDA richt zich niet alleen op bibliotheken, maar de scope is veel breder: Consideration has been given to the metadata standards used in other communities (archives, museums, publishers, semantic web, etc.) to attain an effective level of alignment between those standards and RDA. (RDA 0.2 Relationship to Other Standards for Resource Description and Access). RDA is een uitgebreide regelset gebaseerd op de conceptuele modellen Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR) en Functional Requirements for Authority Data (FRAD). (RDA 0.3 Conceptual Models Underlying RDA). Terwijl de ISBD/RT een nadere uitwerking zijn van de Paris Principles uit 1961, is RDA een uitwerking van de Statement of International Cataloguing Principles van de IFLA uit 2009 (RDA 0.4 Objectives and Principles Governing Resource Description and Access). RDA biedt een minimumset van elementen die in een beschrijving opgenomen dient te worden, passend bij de bibliografische eenheid. Dit wordt RDA Core genoemd (RDA 0.6 Core Elements). RDA bevat een aantal richtlijnen en instructies die als alternatief ( ) of als optie ( Optional Addition of Optional Omission ) zijn geformuleerd. In dit rapport is hieraan een apart hoofdstuk gewijd. 9 van 81

10 3 Alternatieven en opties binnen RDA: keuzes van de Werkgroep Richtlijnen RDA RDA bevat een aantal richtlijnen en instructies die als alternatief ( ) of als optie ( Optional Addition of Optional Omission ) zijn geformuleerd. In de algemene inleiding op dit rapport (hoofdstuk 1) staan de overwegingen van de Werkgroep Richtlijnen RDA bij het maken va n de keuzes voor of tegen alternatieven en opties. Als de Stuurgroep GII en de FOBID de keuzes van de Werkgroep Richtlijnen RDA onderschrijven en de keuzes daarmee veranderen in besluiten, dan houdt dit in dat zij leidend worden voor alle catalogiseerders in Nederland en daarmee onderdeel zijn van het officiële Nederlandse RDA profiel; dit impliceert dat de individuele catalogiseerder of catalogiserende instelling niet zelf meer hoeft te beslissen over de alternatieven en opties. Dit is geheel in lijn met de algemeen geuite wens van catalogiserend Nederland voor eenduidigheid en uniformiteit in het toepassen van RDA. 33 4 Aandachtspunten voor de praktijk De Werkgroep Richtlijnen RDA heeft een aanzienlijk aantal aandachtspunten voor het werken met RDA in de praktijk op een rijtje gezet. Een belangrijk onderdeel hiervan zijn de punten waarin RDA afwijkt van de Regels voor de titelbeschrijving die in Nederland zijn uitgegeven door de FOBID. Omdat de Werkgroep Richtlijnen RDA slechts een beperkte tijd tot zijn beschikking had, heeft de werkgroep zich (voorlopig) geconcentreerd op de volgende hoofdstukken van de RDA Toolkit: - 0 Introduction - Section 1: Recording Attributes of Manifestation & Item - 1 General guidelines on recording attributes of manifestations and items - 2 Identifying manifestations and items - 3 Describing carriers - 4 Providing acquisition and access information Ook vanwege de hierboven genoemde reden heeft de werkgroep zich (voorlopig) in principe beperkt tot de delen 1 en 2 van de Regels voor de titelbeschrijving: Beschrijvingsregels voor niet-seriële publikaties, kortweg RT/NS, en Beschrijvingsregels voor seriële publikaties, kortweg RT/S. In enkele gevallen zijn er verwijzingen opgenomen naar andere regelwerken van de FOBID. De Werkgroep Richtlijnen RDA hoopt in een later stadium toe te komen aan het toevoegen van verwijzingen naar de Regels voor de titelbeschrijving voor de overige materiaalsoorten. Ook het onderwerp catalogusbouw (RT/CAT) is tot nu toe buiten beschouwing gebleve n. Ook de overige hoofdstukken van RDA onder meer over expressies en werken, en over ingangen staan op de to do list van de werkgroep. Bij enkele paragrafen hebben we daarom de zinsnede Valt buiten de scope van RT/NS en RT/S. toegevoegd. Een belangrijk verschil tussen RDA en RT is dat RDA de elementen van een bibliografisch record beschrijft, zonder zich uit te laten over de interpunctie e.d. tussen de diverse elementen; in RT is dat wel het geval en wordt de ISBD interpunctie voorgeschreven. Onderstaande inventarisatie is ook van belang voor de verschillende systeemleveranciers. Er zal een vertaalslag naar de verschillende systemen en catalogiseerformaten nodig zijn. In onderstaand overzicht wordt aangegeven welke elementen nieuw of gewijzigd zijn; dit zowel met het oog op eventuele aanpassingen van de verschillende catalogiseerformaten, maar ook ten behoeve van databaseconversies. Onderstaand overzicht is als volgt opgebouwd: - Het nummer en de naam van de paragraaf uit RDA. - Een verwijzing naar een of meerdere paragrafen uit RT/NS en/of RT/S, gevolgd door de naam van het hoofdstuk waarvan de paragrafen een onderdeel vormen. - Een eventuele toelichting.
