Bannink Hoorcollege Niveau 200 Doel van de cursus is om studenten vertrouwd te maken met klassieke en recente normatieve en empirische theorievorming over beleidsvoering en besluitvorming in bureaucratieën. Beleid pakt zelden zo uit als het beleidsmakers voor ogen stond. In dit vak analyseren we enkele mechanismen die vaak tussen droom en daad blijken te staan. Verschillende docenten vertellen over hun lievelingsmechanisme en illustreren de causale werking ervan aan de hand van concrete casus. Studenten kiezen een leespakket van minimaal 750 pagina s uit politicologische klassieken over centrale thema's in de politicologie zoals bijvoorbeeld Democratie, Internationale Betrekkingen, Internationale Politieke Economie, Internationale Veiligheid, Politieke Economie, Politieke Partijen en Partij Systemen, Politieke Theorie, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam - Onderwijscentrum VU - Minoren Pagina 1 van 5

4 Rechtvaardigheid, De (Verzorgings)Staat, of Wat is Politiek?, en schrijven hierover een kritische bespreking. Onderwijsvorm Individuele literatuurstudie. Een werkstuk van minstens woorden (exclusief titelblad, inhoudsopgave, bibliografie, enzovoorts). In de bespreking komen in ieder geval aan de orde de theoretische invalshoeken van de auteurs, de gebruikte definities en concepten, de toegepaste (onderzoeks)methoden, en de resultaten van de onderzoeken of beschouwingen. Voorts wordt van de student verwacht dat de bespreking uitmondt in een beredeneerde evaluatie van de besproken benaderingen. Tenslotte zal gelet worden op diepgang van de analyse en zorgvuldigheid van de argumentatie, op correct taalgebruik en stijl van schrijven, en op ambachtelijke zaken als verzorgdheid, bibliografie, gebruik van referenties en dergelijke zoals vermeld in de facultaire (FSW) Schrijfwijzer. overzicht thema's en politicologische klassieken wordt op Blackboard beschikbaar gesteld. Pennings Hoorcollege, Werkgroep Niveau This course teaches students the basic skills of doing comparative research across a number of political systems (or cases, often countries). - To this end, it introduces students to key issues of research designs, such as conceptualization, case-selection, working with mixed-data (qualitative and quantitative) and mixed methods (e.g. statistical, descriptive, historical and inferential logic). - Teaches students core topics of comparative politics by learning to interpret comparative differences and similarities of political and social actors in institutional settings; - And offers students hands-on experience in applying their knowledge to those topics. - The course is structured by introducing the substance and methods of comparative political science and presenting and discussing a series of Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam - Onderwijscentrum VU - Minoren Pagina 2 van 5

Specifically, the first two weeks serve to provide the students with basic knowledge about the field of comparative political research, particularly the methodology regarding analyzing institutions, actors and policymaking in a comparative (international) perspective. - After the students have been familiarized with comparative methodology, we turn to the substantive topics, including regime types (autocracy vs. democracy), patterns of democracy, and electoral and party systems. - The lecturer will introduce and elaborate the topic; the students are instructed and work individually and in small groups on the topic. By doing so, students practice the basics of doing comparative research. - Although comparative methods are not directly applied to international politics, mastering these methods is an important and valuable tool to enhance our knowledge on impact of and interactions between international actors. E.B. van Apeldoorn Hoorcollege Niveau Acquiring knowledge of and insight into the contemporary global political economy, in particular how the contradictory process of globalization reshapes the relationship between states and markets; - Introduction to and an understanding of rival concepts and theories within International Political Economy and their application to issues in contemporary global political economy; - Learning how to work in groups and enhance presentation skills. This course offers students an introduction to the subject of International Political Economy (IPE). Throughout, the course will be guided by the question to which extent, and how, the current process of globalization is changing the relationship between states and markets, between public regulation and the private economy, between state and capital. Traditionally IPE studies the relationship between the economic and political within the interaction of patterns of cooperation and conflict between national states. If anything, the global financial and economic crisis of 2008 has made clear that this state-centric perspective is no longer adequate. With processes of globalization and transnationalization national economies have become so much integrated, and their governance at various levels so much enmeshed, that what is properly called the global political economy is about much more than just states and their interests but also about private actors such as transnational corporations, NGOs and all of their different relations across and transcending national borders. 6 vulnerable in the face of global market forces, are also crucial when it comes to protecting the workings of global capitalism. This shows that indeed the relationship between states and markets is not a one-way street. In other words, politics and policies are shaped by economic globalization but the latter is also driven by politics, and shaped (indeed enabled) by the policy choices that states make. It is from this perspective that this course will examine first how the contemporary global political economy has evolved historically, and how we have moved from previous waves of internationalization and globalization to the current one. We will then proceed by analysing the current globalization of trade, finance, and production, as well as their global governance through transnational regimes and the role of International Organizations such as the IMF and the WTO within those regimes. We will furthermore do so through various theoretical lenses that discipline of IPE has to offer. Written Exam. To be announced State, Power and Conflict Vakcode S_SPC () Periode Periode 1 Engels dr. E.B. van Apeldoorn Hoorcollege Niveau 100 This course aims to introduce students to the foundations of political science. After completing the course they will have an overview of the discipline and will be able to apply some basic concepts to contemporary issues. The course covers the broad field of political science: it provides a basic overview of basic concepts (state, power, conflict, cooperation), key approaches (liberalism, realism, institutionalism, historical materialism) and sub-disciplines (political thought, national and comparative politics, international relations).
