In On Denoting (1905): I take the notion of the variable as fundamental; I use C(x) to mean a proposition [footnote: more exactly, a propositional function] in which x is a constituent, where x, the variable, is essentially and wholly undetermined. Is dus een propositionele functie een complex van realia dat ook variabelen bevat? Wat maakt dat dan tot een functie? Is de variabele hier iets essentiëel anders dan een letter in een rol? 2. In Introduction to Mathematical Philosophy (1919): A propositional function, in fact, is an expression containing one or more undetermined constituents, such that, when values are assigned to these constituents, the expression becomes a proposition. Merk op dat dit past bij de syntactische opvatting van propositie. Merkwaardig is echter dat Russell hier niet spreekt van substitutie van namen voor de variabelen maar van het toewijzen van waarden. Maar een formule plus een toewijzing is geen form of words, tenzij je wilt zeggen dat de toewijzing de variabele tot een woord maakt. Problemen met Russell s definitie van propositional function. 1. Hij verwart term met functie 2. Hoe onderscheidt je een propositie betreffende de variabele van een propositionele term met de variabele? De expressie [Jan loopt op straat] staat voor de propositie dat Jan op straat loopt. Ik zal [Jan ziet x op straat] schrijven voor de propositionele term. Deze term kan op twee manieren gelezen worden. 3

4 1. De moderne: hier heeft het symbool x de rol van variabele. 2. De manier van Russell: hier is het symbool x een naam voor een willekeurig object. [Jan ziet x op straat] is een term op het niveau van de complexen. Problemen met deze manier van beschouwen zijn de volgende. (i) Wat is de ware metafysische aard van deze onbepaalde objecten? (ii) Hoe slagen we er in ze te benoemen? Hoe slagen we er in om er meerdere te benoemen, bijvoorbeeld x en y? (iii) Hoe moeten we x is een variabele begrijpen? λx [Jan ziet x op straat] voor de propositionele functie. Het belang van het onderscheid tussen term en functie wordt geïllustreerd door het volgende voorbeeld. λx [[Jan ziet x op straat] is een propositie], [λx [Jan ziet x op straat] is een propositie] Het eerste item is een propositionele functie die voor elke input waar geeft, het tweede is een onware propositie. 6 Aanhaling We zetten dubbele aanhalingstekens om een rijtje symbolen heen om een naam van dat rijtje symbolen te vormen. Russell gebruikt in On Denoting aanhalingstekens op allerlei manieren. Merk op dat Jan ziet x op straat geen term is met vrije variable x. De variabele x wordt genoemd en niet gebruikt. Bovendien is x in Jan ziet x op straat een variabele die loopt over objecten en niet over termen. We kunnen het effect van een term-variabele krijgen met Quine quotes: Jan ziet α op straat betekent: het resultaat van eerst Jan ziet te schrijven, dan α en dan op straat. We moeten dan wel afspreken dat de letter α niet voorkomt in de aangehaalde teksten! 7 Enige Passages Ontrafeld p162,+15 I use C(x) to mean a proposition.... We moeten dus C zien als een variabele die over proposities (eigenlijk propositionele functies) loopt. Hier gebruikt Russell enkele aanhalingstekens om een syntactisch object te benoemen. p162,+20 C(everything) means C(x) is always true. Tsja, ik zou denken dat dit moet zijn (met enkele aanhalingstekens voor syntactische objecten): C(everything) means that C(x) is always true. Dan is er nog steeds 4

5 een probleem: je zou geneigd zijn dit te lezen als for all propositional functions C, C(everything) means that C(x) is always true. Maar de kwantor in een aangehaalde context bindt niet, omdat de C daar alleen een letter denoteert. De beste optie is helemaal niets aan te halen en te zeggen: for all propositional functions C, C(everything) : C(x) is always true. In mijn notatie: for all propositional functions C, C(everything) : C. p165,-1 Waarom hier ineens wel C(a man)? p167,+6,+7 Dus C is hier een variabele die loopt over denoterende expressies. Merk op dat dit afwijkt van eerdere conventie, waar C liep over propositionele functies. Russell gebruikt C hier niet als naam van de letter C, maar voor: het resultaat van enkele aanhalingstekens rond expressie C zetten. Hier zou hij dus eigenlijk Quine quotes nodig hebben. (Die waren toen nog niet uitgevonden.) 1 C tussen enkele quotes gezet is een denoterende term voor de betekenis van C. Hier zou ik C tussen vierkante haken gebruiken. Een poging tot reconstructie van de Gray s Elegy passage. Je moet er de oorspronkelijke tekst wel naastleggen. Mijn reconstructies kunnen natuurlijk fout zijn. Te meer daar ik uit één passage onverklaarbare nonsens krijg. The relation of the meaning to the denotation involves certain rather curious difficulties, which seem in themselves sufficient to prove that the theory which leads to such difficulties must be wrong. When we wish to speak about the meaning of a denoting phrase, as opposed to its denotation, the natural mode of doing so is by square brackets. Thus we say: The center of mass of the solar system is a point, not a denoting complex; [The center of mass of the solar system] is a denoting complex, not a point. Or again, The first line of Gray s Elegy states a proposition. [The first line of Gray s Elegy] does not state a proposition. Thus taking any denoting phrase, say γ, we wish to consider the relation between γ and S(γ), where the difference of the two is of the kind exemplified in the above two instances. We say, to begin with, that when γ occurs it is the denotation that we are speaking about; but when S(γ) occurs, it is the meaning. Now the relation of meaning and denotation is not merely linguistic through the phrase: there must be a logical relation involved, which we express by saying that the meaning denotes the denotation. But the difficulty which confronts us is that we cannot succeed in both preserving the connexion of meaning and denotation and preventing them from being one and the same; also that the meaning cannot be got at except by means of denoting phrases. This happens as follows. The one phrase γ was to have both meaning and denotation. But if we use M(γ), that will denote the meaning of the denotation of γ. 2 We have: M(the first line of Gray s Elegy) = M(A); M(the first line of Gray s Elegy) M(B). Thus in order to get the meaning we want, we must speak not of M(γ), but of MQ(γ). Similarly D(γ) does mean what we want, but means something which, if it denotes at all, denotes what is denoted by the denotation we want. For example, let C := [the first line of Gray s Elegy]. Then, C = A But what we meant to have as the denotation was B. Thus we have failed to get what we wanted. 3 The difficulty in speaking of the meaning of a denoting complex may be stated thus: The moment we put the complex in a proposition, the proposition is about the denotation; and if we make a proposition in which the subject 2 Dus D( M(γ) ) = MD(γ). 7 is M(γ), then the subject is the meaning (if any) of the denotation, which was not intended. This leads us to say that, when we distinguish meaning and denotation, we must be dealing with the meaning: the meaning has denotation and is a complex, and there is not something other than the meaning, which can be called the complex, and be said to have both meaning and denotation. The right phrase, on the view in question, is that some meanings have denotations. But this only makes our difficulty in speaking of meanings more evident. 4 For suppose that C (γ?) is our complex; then we are to say that C (γ?) is the meaning of the complex. Nevertheless, whenever C (γ?) occurs without square brackets, what is said is not true of the meaning, but only of the denotation, as when we say: The center of mass of the solar system is a point. Thus to speak of C (γ?) itself, i.e. to make a proposition about the meaning, our subject must not be C (γ?), but something which denotes C (γ?). Thus S(γ) 5, which is what we use when we want to speak of the meaning, must not be the meaning, but must be something which denotes the meaning. And C (γ?) must not be a constituent of this complex (as it is of M(γ)); for if C (γ?) occurs in the complex, it will be its denotation, not its meaning, that will occur, and there is no backward road from denotations to meaning, because every object can be denoted by an infinite number of different denoting phrases. Thus it would seem that DS(γ)) and D(γ) are different entities, such that DS(γ)) denotes D(γ); but this cannot be an explanation, because the relation of DS(γ) to D(γ) remains wholly mysterious; a nd where are we to find the denoting complex DS(γ) which is to denote D(γ)? Moreover, when γ occurs in a proposition, it is not only the denotation that occurs (as we shall see in the next paragraph); yet, on the view in question, D(γ) is only the denotation, the meaning being wholly relegated to DS(γ). This is an inextricable tangle, and seems to prove that the whole distinction between meaning and denotation has been wrongly conceived. 4 In de nu volgende passage lijkt R consequent syntax en semantiek te verwarren.
