2 Redactioneel Inhoud De snelheid van de tijd lijkt recht evenredig te zijn met het plezier van de activiteit. Als je ergens plezier in hebt, moet je er dubbel van genieten, want het is twee keer zo snel voorbij. Ik ben ervan overtuigd dat Sjoerd Verduyn Lunel, die op 31 augustus afscheid nam als decaan van de faculteit, dit zeker zou bevestigen. Terwijl hij terugkeert naar het onderzoek in de wiskunde, wordt zijn functie overgenomen door de bioloog Geert de Snoo. Op pagina 14 staat het afscheidsinterview met Verduyn Lunel, we bedanken hem voor zijn inzet als decaan en wensen De Snoo veel succes voor de komende jaren! Zoals aan de cover te zien is, draait dit nummer rond het thema historie, het schrijven van geschiedenis. In het bijzonder gaat het over vijf wetenschappers, aan wie de gebouwen van de faculteit hun namen ontlenen (lees meer over Van Goorle, Huygens, Oort, Snell van Royen, Van Steenis en Le Boë vanaf pagina 6). Daarnaast werden twee redacteuren aan tafel uitgenodigd door professor Frans van Lunteren, gespecialiseerd in de geschiedenis van de natuurwetenschappen (pagina 18). Hoe snel dingen voorbijvliegen en veranderen, dat merk je in de kleinste dingen. Voor je het weet, stel je alweer het eerste nummer van de achtste jaargang van dit faculteitsblad samen, de laatste voor mij als hoofdredacteur. In mijn nieuwe functie als assessor van het faculteitsbestuur schuif ik op naar de positie van eindredacteur. Daarnaast is het na een plezierige anderhalf jaar ook weer tijd voor een frisse blik. Ik wens het nieuwe redactieteam onder leiding van Carlos de Lannoy heel veel succes en heel veel plezier. 3 Nieuws Nieuws Prof. dr. Geert de Snoo nieuwe decaan faculteit der Wiskunde en Natuurwetenschappen Prof. dr. Geert de Snoo is per 1 september 2012 decaan van de Faculteit der Wiskunde en Natuurwetenschappen van de Universiteit Leiden. De Snoo volgt prof. dr. Sjoerd Verduyn Lunel op. Momenteel is De Snoo hoogleraar Conservation Biology en tevens directeur bij het Centrum voor Milieuwetenschappen (CML) van de Universiteit Leiden. Daarnaast is hij bijzonder hoogleraar Agrarisch Natuur- en Landschapsbeheer aan de Universiteit Wageningen. De Snoo (1961) studeerde biologie aan de Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam en startte zijn loopbaan in Leiden als onderzoeker bij het CML. Vervolgens was hij werkzaam als onderzoeker bij NWO en promoveerde in 1995 op het onderwerp Unsprayed field margins: implications for environment, biodiversity and agricultural practice. Na zijn promotie verwierf hij een NWO Stimulans subsidie, vergelijkbaar met de huidige VENI beurs en werd hij tevens hoofd van de sectie Ecosystemen en Milieukwaliteit bij het CML. In 2003 werd hij benoemd tot bijzonder hoogleraar Agrarisch Natuur- en Landschapsbeheer aan de Universiteit Wageningen. In 2009 werd hij benoemd als hoogleraar aan de Universiteit Leiden. Rob van Wijk aangesteld als assessor Per 1 september neemt Rob van Wijk de functie van assessor van de Faculteit der Wiskunde en Natuurwetenschappen over van Dwayne van der Klugt op. De trouwe lezer kent Rob al, aangezien hij bij de totstandkoming van de laatste zes (inclusief de huidige) Origin Magazines hoofdredacteur van dit mooie blad is geweest. Rob van Wijk zal halverwege dit collegejaar starten met zijn MSc. in Bio-farmaceutische wetenschappen. In zijn nieuwe rol als assessor zal hij voor alle studenten van de faculteit klaar staan en zorgen voor het studentenperspectief bij de besluitvorming binnen de faculteit. Daarnaast blijft hij betrokken bij Origin als eindredacteur, één van de vele andere taken die de assessor op zich neemt. Nieuwe hoofdredacteur Origin Met het afscheid van Rob van Wijk als hoofdredacteur kwam er een vacature vrij bij Origin. Met trots kunnen wij melden dat deze positie snel ingevuld kon worden door een ervaring redacteur, namelijk Carlos de Lannoy. Carlos schrijft al meer dan anderhalf jaar voor de Origin en wil nu graag het stokje van Rob overnemen. In Origin 8.2 die rond 15 januari uitkomt, zal zijn hand te zien zijn. Namens de gehele redactie wensen wij Carlos veel succes! Vier Veni s voor onderzoekers Faculteit der Wiskunde en Natuurwetenschappen Vier pas gepromoveerde onderzoekers verbonden aan de faculteit W&N hebben een Veni-subsidie in de wacht gesleept. Wetenschappers Dr. ir. Jeroen Bussmann, Dr. Irene Groot, Dr. Haili Hu en Dr. David Sobral ontvangen elk een subsidie van maximaal euro om de komende drie jaar te besteden aan hun onderzoek. Een Veni-subsidie is één van de persoonsgebonden financieringsvormen van NWO om wetenschappelijk talent te stimuleren en wordt toegekend aan jonge, veelbelovende talenten. Dit jaar heeft NWO voor 37 miljoen euro aan Veni-subsidies verstrekt. Veni maakt onderdeel uit van de prestigieuze Vernieuwingsimpuls van NWO, bestaande uit Veni, Vidi en Vici. Hiermee biedt NWO wetenschappers in verschillende stadia binnen hun carrière de mogelijkheid om grensverleggend onderzoek te doen. In totaal zijn er dit jaar 14 Veni-subsidies verstrekt aan onderzoekers van de universiteit Leiden. Dr. Anton Akhmerov gelauwerd bij opening academisch jaar Theoretisch natuurkundige dr. Anton Akhmerov heeft bij de opening van het academisch jaar de eerste Gratama Wetenschapsprijs van het Leids Universiteits Fonds ontvangen. Akhmerov kreeg de Gratama Wetenschapsprijs voor jong talent uitgereikt voor onder meer zijn onderzoek aan functionele toepassingen van grafeen, een eenlaags koolstofmateriaal. Dit vakgebied is zeer competitief en het ontwikkelt zich razendsnel. Volgens de jury, het Wetenschapscomité van het Leids Universiteits Fonds, is Akhmerov een creatief en onafhankenlijk denker, en bovendien een excellent netwerker en collega. Akhemerov dankte in zijn reactie zijn vrienden van de Leidse universiteit. Dankzij de prijs kan ik, als ik straks in Harvard werk, de band met hen in stand houden, een voordeel dat niet onderschat moet worden. Origin - Universiteit Leiden 3

4 Studenten Een Leidse student uit het verleden prof. dr. Johan Lugtenburg Ik blijf tot mijn zeventigste wel werken. Of langer! IEen student uit de historie, dat spreekt tot de verbeelding. Terecht, zou je denken, tenzij deze student nog steeds werkzaam is aan de Universiteit Leiden, Faculteit der Wiskunde en Natuurwetenschappen. Professor Johan Lugtenburg (1942), bekend van onder andere colleges Scheikunde voor BFW, begon 52 jaar geleden met de studie Scheikunde en is sindsdien altijd in dienst van de universiteit gebleven. Lugtenburg vertelt over zowel herkenbare zaken als gebeurtenissen die voor altijd geschiedenis zijn. door: Rob van Wijk In 1960 begon Johan Lugtenburg met de studie (de huidige Clusius Laboratoria), gevestigd aan de Scheikunde aan de Universiteit Leiden. Na zich in september ingeschreven te hebben, werd hij samen met De rest van de gebouwen stond meer in het cen- Wassenaarseweg, waar nu het Bio Science Park ligt. alle andere eerstejaarsstudenten uitgenodigd door professor Jonker, de Rector Magnificus, voor een persoon- Karmerlingh Onnes Laboratorium, nu de Faculteit trum: het Academiegebouw aan het Rapenburg, het lijke kennismaking. In die tijd was dat nog mogelijk: er der Rechtsgeleerdheid, en de gebouwen aan de Hugo stonden in totaal 5620 studenten ingeschreven, bijna de Grootstraat. Alle colleges werden aangekondigd op een blad papier van 100 bij 50 cm: de Series evenveel als er dit jaar eerstejaars zijn. Op de vraag wat hij in Leiden kwam studeren, antwoorde Lugtenburg: Lectionum. 5 Studenten ongeluk tijdens de demonstratie. Hij had wel een duidelijke en enthousiaste wijze van college geven. Professor Havinga kende mensen al snel van gezicht, in tegenstelling tot de strenge professor Van Arkel. Diens biologische klok week sterk af van de academische, waardoor hij vaker tien minuten te vroeg begon dan het Leidse kwartiertje te respecteren. De anorganische collegezaal had zitplaatsen op een balkon, dat van achteren bereikbaar was. Nadat Van Arkel tien minuten te vroeg was begonnen, nam één van de studenten vijf minuten later op het balkon plaats, waarschijnlijk door zijn zenuwen maakte hij bij het binnenkomen wat lawaai. Hierop zei professor Van Arkel dat hij het volkomen ongehoord vond dat iemand te laat binnenkwam en zijn concentratie verstoorde! Het verweer van de betreffende persoon, dat hij meer dan op tijd was en de hoogleraar veel te vroeg was gestart, maakte niet de minste indruk op Van Arkel, die daarbij duidelijk maakte dat de hoogleraar het tijdstip van aanvang bepaalde en dat zijn college niet op deze wijze verstoord behoorde te worden. Bij de practica werden het meeste werk op de laboratoriumtafels gedaan. Zuurkasten of speciaal beveiligde ruimtes mochten alleen gebruikt worden bij mogelijk gevaar of te veel stank, waardoor het gebouw afhankelijk van de vakgroep rook naar benzeenverbindingen, zuren of aceton. Afsluitende verslagen werden vaak overgenomen van oudere studenten: Er werd min of meer stilzwijgend vanuit gegaan dat de beste procedure was goede verslagen van een oudere generatie studenten als basis voor het verslag te gebruiken. Ik was zo onverstandig niet in te gaan op dit type plagiaat. Dit heeft dan ook de beoordeling van mijn verslagen ongunstig beïnvloed. Toetsing voor bijvoorbeeld het practicum organische chemie geschiedde in donkerblauw driedeel voor de mannen. In het geval van Lugtenburg vond dit half uur mondelinge toetsing plaats in de kelder van de rechtervleugel, alleen bereikbaar door gebukt toegankelijke gangen. De faculteit kampte met een groeiend ruimtegebrek. Tot slot was er ook ruimte voor ontspanning, zoals het door het CDL georganiseerde Sinterklaasfeest. Op 5 december werden, per jaar wisselend in de organische en de anorganische collegezaal, hoogleraren, assistenten en studenten bij Sint, die zich meestal iets te veel moed ingedronken had, geroepen. In het grote boek stonden dan wat opdrachten voor de hoogleraren. Het was Lugtenburg wel duidelijk: Gedurende het optreden van Sint Nicolaas stond een verklede heilige hoger in status dan een hooggeleerde! Na het carrièreadvies van professor Havinga, om zich te richten op de fotochemie van vitamine D, promoveerde Lugtenburg tien jaar na het begin van zijn studie op dit onderzoeksgebied. Hoewel hij na zijn promotie twee jaar in Groningen en één jaar in Amerika heeft gewerkt, is hij altijd verbonden geweest aan de Universiteit Leiden. Zelfs na zijn vervroegde uittreding, nadat de jongeren hem vroegen nog steeds college te blijven geven. En ik blijf tot mijn zeventigste wel werken. Of langer! Na ruim veertig jaar werkt hij nog steeds aan fotochemische reacties die plaatsvinden bij het zien, met af en toe een uitstapje naar fotodynamische therapie van kanker. Normaal gesproken blikken we in deze rubriek vaak vooruit, maar deze terugblik laat goed zien dat Leidse studenten goed terecht komen! 6 SPECIAL Names that stand like stone Whether you follow a lecture in the Sylvius Laboratory, do some lab-work in the Gorlaeus Laboratory s LCP or try to find some far-off room in another building that resembles a maze, during your time studying at the Leiden University you can find yourself in all sorts of buildings where scientific research is conducted. The names of the buildings - Van Steenis, Sylvius or Snellius - also are somewhat confusing, as the link between the name and the building itself can remain somewhat vague. In the meantime much happens in these mazes; behind every door someone may be planning his or her potential Nobel Prizewinning experiment. In Leiden the buildings are sorted by the research that is conducted in them, so when you are working, your colleagues never will be far. Still the locations of different groups remain well hidden, until that one publication causes a department to receive media attention. The names of the buildings are in the spotlight every day. Every building is named after a recognized scientist who in the course of history has proven his duty in science. But do you know who the man behind the Gorlaeus building was? Or where Snellius conducted his research? In this article we describe how the buildings of the Faculty of Science were build and which is where. 7 SPECIAL The person David van Goorle, better known under his Latinized name Gorlaeus, was a young genius who lived during a time just before the enlightenment, in the 17th century. He was born in 1591 and grew up in Friesland, in the small town of Conjum (now called Koarnjum). He started his study in Leeuwarden, where he was taught Latin and he continued his study doing philosophy at the Franeker University. The University of Franeker was built in order to prevent smart young minds moving from the areas of Friesland to the city of Leiden. Parents could keep an eye on their offspring and the money spent by students was kept in the province. Still Van Goorle moved to Leiden, where he started studying theology in The philosophy of Aristotle was taught here together with bible studies. Van Goorle criticized, amongst other things, the five elements Aristotle proposed to be the basis of everything, with arguments that now seem logical to us. Fire is in our opinion not an independence, but a fortuity, and not different than an intense heat that has light grounded on fatness or oiliness of the burning compound. He came with an alternative for the five elements: the idea of atoms that was picked up by more scientists during the enlightenment era. Due to his revolutionary ideas, he was discredited by the Dutch reformed church, but it never got to a conflict. This was mainly due to the early death of Van Goorle at the age of 21. As his story points out he encouraged unorthodox thinking. A motto of his was: Also when everyone around you has an opposite opinion, the truth should be defended and you should see you teacher as an enemy. This is your eternal task. A point of view that is still encouraged by naming the Gorlaeus laboratory after him. The building The Gorlaeus laboratory as we know it was finished in 1971 and consistsof three complexes: the LCP practical Gorlaeus 'Also when everyone around you has an opposite opinion, the truth should be defended' building, the disk-shaped building with lecture rooms and the ten floor tower where research is conducted. Within the disk shaped building you can find the largest lecture room of the entire university and the Netherlands. The room is really amazing, especially when all the 700 seats are filled with students. The main subject of the tower was originally mainly chemistry, but at this moment research is conducted in many life sciences fields as well. Here research groups specialized in organic chemistry, catalysis, genetics, pharmacology and toxicology are located. The Cell Observatory, situated on the ground level in the back of the building has brand new facilities in cell imaging, making the visualisation of cellular dynamics possible. This facility makes this kind of research possible by sharing the expensive equipment. The collaboration between different fields of work are encouraged by providing shared facilities. Also unique and new in the building is the NeCEN facility, facilitating two new Titan Krios- transmission electron microscopes, which can zoom in to the molecular level and see the dynamics. The facility can be rented, opening access to this expensive laboratory equipment for companies and research groups from all over the country. read more > Origin - Universiteit Leiden 7

8 SPECIAL Huygens The person The Huygens laboratory, situated next to the Gorlaeus laboratory, is named after the Dutch scientist Christiaan Huygens. Christiaan Huygens, born in The Hague in 1629, grew up in an educational rich environment. He was a polymath excelling languages, music and also science. When he was sixteen, he started his study in law and mathematics at the Leiden University and continued studying in Breda. He always was more interested in math and he became a devoted scientist, funded by his father s money. In later periods he received a chair in the Royal Society and he moved to Paris. Here he was at the centre of cultural and scientific Europe in the 17th century. Huygens was mainly fascinated by physical problems concerning extra-terrestrial bodies, wavelike behaviour and optics. He introduced an equation for centrifugal force and the pendulum equation. He described light as wave for the first time and experimented with acoustic interference. Also he invented a combination of lenses which resulted in a minimal colour shift in telescopes. He is of course famous for building the first precise clockworks. His drawings are as instructive and precise as one can expect from a scientist today. The detail of the drawings gives the feeling of looking at a painting, even giving an overview of his thoughts during the process of inventing. At the end of his life, believing in the idea of a deity in the rationalistic world he described all his life became impossible. He fell in depression and went back to The Hague and later to Voorburg. He died in 1695 at the age of 66. Huygens served as a great inspiration for scientists from that time until now. His laws and inventions are still being used by people all over the world. The building In accordance with the person behind the building, the Huygens laboratory has been one of the three physics buildings present in Leiden. When the 375th birthday of Huygens was celebrated in 2004, one of the buildings was named after him. Physics research fields in the physics buildings are theoretical physics, condensed matter physics, quantum optics (Huygens would be proud) and quantum biological and molecular physics. The Huygens building also has a wall with signatures of famous physicists like Erwin Schrödinger and Max Planck, who spoke at the Colloquium Ehrenfestii held once or twice a month. The name and the building itself have physics history written all over it. In the Huygens laboratory (in the picture on the right) research in different fields is conducted, where the Oort building (left) houses physics and astronomy. OORT The Oort building is named after the astronomer Jan- Hendrik Oort, a scientist who lived from 1900 until 1992, who has contributed greatly in astronomy by participating in a project to build the VLT (very large telescope) in Chile and of course by many of his findings. He calculated the distance of the earth to the centre of the milky way (thirty light years) and its mass. Also, he predicted that a cloud of comets had a similar source, and this cloud is now called the Oort cloud. First, astronomy in Leiden was conducted in the astronomy observatory tower in the city centre. The move of a part of the physics department to the Huygens building resulted in a split between physicists and the astronomers. To make sure they could work together, the Oort building was contructed and finished in 1997, reuniting all physicists and astronomers. 8 Origin - Universiteit Leiden

9 SPECIAL Snellius The person In 1580, a very intelligent boy was born in Leiden, named Willebrord Snell van Royen, which we still know under his Latin name Snellius. Snellius got into contact with the academic world at a very early age, because his father was a professor in mathematics at Leiden University. This made it possible for him to start studying there at the age of ten. He did not study mathematics, but law and classics. His father taught him mathematics personally. By the age of twenty, Snellius was already giving lectures. In 1600, Snellius took a two year study trip in which he met a lot of great minds, like Brahe and Kepler. During the years after this trip Snellius made a name for himself by producing excellent publications and translations. His hard work payed off; two years after his father s dead he became professor of mathematics in Leiden, as successor of his father. Snellius produced more great works in his life. Three highlights are worth mentioning. In 1615 his calculations of the radius of the earth by the use of triangulation were only 4% off from the figure we now know to be true. Furthermore, he found a new way to calculate, the first breakthrough since ancient times. The last and probably best known work of Snellius is the law which is named after him: the law of refraction of light. The truth behind this law is a bit bitter; the law was only rediscovered by Snellius. He was the first to have the ability to test the law, which was first stated by Ibn Sahl in 984. Both Ptolemy and Witelo looked at the same law as well, but they both lacked the appropriate tools to test it. In 1626 Snellius died at the age of 45 or 46. The building In the sixties, a new phenomenon reached Leiden University: computers. In 1962 the first of these machines was bought by the Faculty of Science. The computer had an incredibly fast 0,1 MHz processor and 50 kb of RAM memory. The problem in those days was the space required for such a machine and therefore a new building was created in This is the building we now know as the Snellius building. The need for computers grew very fast and the role of the Snellius building became more and more important. Next to the use of computers for scientific purposes, the computers were also used internally. The I-group was founded, so that they could be the key player in all information processes within our university. Not so long ago, the I-group became the ISSC. Next to the mainframes and offices of the ISSC, the Snellius building also houses two of the institutes of the Faculty of Science, namely the mathematicians of the MI and the computer scientists of the LIACS. The Snellius was only named after Willebrord Snell van Royen after the 2003/2004 renovation. During this renovation, the server rooms and the cafeteria were updated. It is said that the architect of the Snellius building used a sombrero as inspiration. With the angel of the main building at 10% and the big rain pipes which also connect to the ground in an angle, it is easy to see this could be true. 10 SPECIAL Van Steenis The person Cornelis Gijsbert Gerrit Jan van Steenis was a botanical biologist, born on the 31st of October in 1901, in Utrecht. In Utrecht he went to high school and after he graduated he went to the university where he got his PhD in Upon finishing his PhD, he moved out of Utrecht to Bogor (Java, Indonesia), where he remained until This was the start of a career that would give him the name of pioneer in Tropical Botany. In Java he worked as botanist in a botanical garden. This botanical garden is now known as Kebun Raya Bogor. It is the oldest botanical garden in Indonesia. It was founded in 1817 by dr. C.G.C. Reinwalt as a botanical garden and experimental station. During his time in Indonesia, Van Steenis became co-editor of the Tropische Natuur, the magazine of the Dutch-Indian association of natural history. When Van Steenis came back to The Netherlands, he became involved in the organization Flora Malesiana, which goal it was and still is to describe the flora of the Malesian area (Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, New-Guinea, Singapore and Brunei). In 1950 he became director of the Flora Malesiana Foundation and he would remain in that position until his death in In 1951 he became professor in Amsterdam and in 1952 in Leiden. Van Steenis published a lot about the flora in the Malesian area and became member of the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences (KNAW). In 1962 he became director of a predecessor of the National Herbarium of the Netherlands (NHN), the Rijksherbarium Leiden. He held this position until The NHN was not founded until 1999, as a decentral merger of three Herbaria, namely the Rijksherbarium Leiden, the Utrecht University Herbarium and the Herbarium Vadense. It now has a collection of over 5.5 million specimens. On May 14th 1986, Van Steenis passed away at the age of 84. Although long passed the age of retirement, Van Steenis remained scientifically active until the very last. The building The building at Einsteinweg 2 is known to many students as the Van Steenis building, but the building was not called after professor Cornelis van Steenis until 9 years after it had been build. In 1987 a company named Infotheek built this office in an eighties style architecture. It was built as a location with both office and storage capabilities. Unfortunately for this company, it went bankrupt in After the bankruptcy, the building was vacant for two whole years. At that time, the Leiden University decided that the predecessor of the NHN, had to move. The NHN was up until that moment located in the center of Leiden, but the buildings in which it was located were no longer suitable for storing the delicate dried plant collections. The building at Einsteinweg 2 was appointed as the new location for the NHN. After renovating and renaming the building after Cornelis van Steenis, the Dutch queen opened the Van Steenis building on June 11 th, The Van Steenis building is still used by the NHN, but is also well known by the first year biology students, who follow some of their courses here. Furthermore, the Institute of Environmental Science is located here as well. The Van Steenis building is not the only thing named after Van Steenis; a street in Oegstgeest and a genus of plants are also named after this excellent professor. 10 Origin - Universiteit Leiden

11 SPECIAL Sylvius The person On May 11 th, 1614 Franz de le Boë was born in Hanau, Germany. In those days it was rather normal to use your Latin name in science, so Sylvius is the Latinization of de le Boë, which both translates as 'of the woods'. Sylvius studied medicine in Sedan, France, but shortly after he went to Leiden to study medicine as well. During the following years he made some tours through Jena and Wittenberg. In 1639 he returned to Leiden to teach. In 1641 he opened a lucrative medical center in Amsterdam, but went back to Leiden in 1658 to be appointed professor of medicine. For this he received an unusual high salary of 1800 guilder, twice the normal amount for a professor. He lived at the Rapenburg 31 and while there, he collected an impressive art collection of over 190 paintings. Sylvius based his medical system on the then recent discovery of the circulation of the blood by William Harvey. Sylvius thought that most of the normal and pathological life took place in the blood and that therefore most medical problem should be explained and treated chemically. Because living matter contains salt, Sylvius was convinced that chemical imbalances consisted of an excess of acids or alkali and he devised drugs to counteract these conditions. During his time as a professor in Leiden, he became one of Europe s most outstanding teachers. He, for instance, introduced ward instruction in medical education. Furthermore Sylvius was the initiator of the first university chemistry laboratory. With this laboratory and his new education of iatrochemistry (chemistry for physicians) he made the Leiden University world famous. Next to his great performance in chemistry and education, Sylvius also made some discoveries. He found the Sylvian fissure in the human brain, for instance. The discovery of the liquor Jenever is also thought to be one of Sylvius, but it cannot be said for sure. The building The construction of the Sylvius Laboratory has quite a history. In the late fifties the drawings of the new large building showed multiple towers. The towers were supposed to be built in a diagonal fashion, but still linked through centrepieces. By the time the construction started, only tower six and tower seven were to be built. Just after the start of the build in 1961, the local authorities of Leiden en Oegstgeest came into play. Because the building is right on the border between Leiden en Oegstgeest, they could not decide who was responsible for the building in case of emergencies. The plan was revised and the build site moved a couple of hundred meters into the Leiden area. After four years of delay the build finally started again in Construction was finished in 1971, but disaster struck again. It could not be decided who should become the new inhabitant of the state of the art Sylvius Laboratory. It took until 1974 to make a decision and up until 1975 to completely finish the building including its interior. In the period from 1974 until 2006 the Sylvius was inhabited by medical researchers, who moved to the new LUMC research building in The Sylvius was then thoroughly renovated to suite the researchers of the Institute of Biology Leiden (IBL) who moved in from different other buildings to be united in this large laboratory. All the biology students come here for their courses. The smaller building in front of the Sylvius Laboratory was built in Construction of this addition was also far from perfect; miscommunications led to delay. In 2001 Biopartner started in the new Building Three. Biopartner is an incubator, a place where start-ups and spin-offs of Leiden University can grow to become an independent company. BY: Carlos de Lannoy Very few current-day natural scientists would consider themselves to be an authority on several sciences; a theoretical physicist does not normally discover new fungal species and a naturalist does not contemplate on the existence of a particle. Also, neither of them would consider crossing pencils with a contemporary painter. In fact, by continuously deepening our understanding of the world and the universe around us, man made it fairly hard for even the brainiest of us to stay on the top of multiple sciences fields, let alone combining this with an artistic career. The result: a modernday scientist specializes himself in increasingly smaller subjects, which makes it easier to learn and understand everything about it. In contrast, scientists from ancient Greece to Renaissance Italy found the time to immerse themselves in a variety of scientific fields and fine arts. Examples of such mastodons of knowledge, who later became known as Homo universalis, polymaths or Renaissance men, include Aristotle and Leonardo da Vinci. Although seemingly necessary, increasing specialisation is also reason for concern, as it may result in tunnel vision; eventually, no-one may be able to connect the dots between separately studied fields. May there still be a place for Homo universalis in our society? Or does the vast amount of available information render such a position impossible? dition, like some suggest? And what about linguistic skills? To set a definition, it may prove useful to analyse the man who is considered the archetype polymath; Leonardo da Vinci. Early biographers describe Da Vinci as more than a few steps above mere mortals. Giorgio Vasari strikingly depicted the spirit in 1562, when he wrote that Da Vinci was an artist of outstanding physical beauty, who displayed infinite grace in everything that he did and who cultivated his genius so brilliantly that he solved all problems that he studied with ease. Although some feats of Da Vinci reported by Vasari are now considered slightly exaggerated such as his alleged ability to bend a horseshoe with one hand there is no denying that his interests stretched far. While his paintings and drawings include widely known masterpieces, his skills in engineering are his best known feat in sciences and are even referred to as prophetic by some. His notes also include work on other subjects, such as mathematics and anatomy, but at the time, he hardly made any impact in these fields, firstly because he was largely unschooled in these subjects and secondly because he never published this work. Thus, if Da Vinci is considered the archetype Renaissance man, then making public contributions to several fields is apparently not necessary. Science and art To answer these questions, a sharp definition of the Renaissance man (or woman, of course) is necessary. However, the title remains an unofficial one, which is granted when someone is publicly thought to deserve it, and usage of the term has been loose. Does a Renaissance man need to make valuable contributions to various scientific areas, or is a deep understanding sufficient? Is he also required to be in top physique con- Another way to define the Renaissance man is given by Baldassare Castiglione, who literally wrote the book on becoming one. In his Book of the Courtier, he depicts the perfect companion for a king as a fighter, musician and scientists, but also an eloquent speaker and passionate lover [1]. Although a courtier is not the same as a Renaissance man, Castiglione s description is frequently mentioned as a recommended literature for beginning Renaissance men. Summarizing, the most important characteristics of a Renaissance man appear to be a thorough understanding of several hard sciences, combined with proficiency in one or more fine arts. Making significant contributions to said scientific fields is optional. Present day specimens With the term Renaissance man sufficiently defined, we can proceed in assessing its chances of survival in the current world. What problems would a person have to overcome to become a modern-day Renaissance man? Is there currently one among us? Whether or not Renaissance men are able to exist depends on the ability of humans to combine absorption of the vast amount of information required to stay on top of several fields, with the ability to express himself creatively. As it turns out, some living and recently deceased people meet these criteria at least partly. Perhaps the greatest almost-modern-day Renaissance man is Richard Feynman; the theoretical physicist best known for his contributions to the Manhattan project (that is, the development of the atomic bomb), also worked on quantum computing and nanotechnology, while occasionally dabbling in microbiology. He also proved to be an excellent writer, producing semi-autobiographies as well as lectures that are still considered the best introduction to physics. Additionally he liked to exhibit his (admittedly modest) musical skills on native-american drums, earning him the nickname Injun Joe Although the term Renaissance man, may be a bit misplaced, the call for more generalist academics can be heard from multiple corners of society. An example is found in medicine, where more integration of social sciences into the study of biological structures is proposed [2]. In biology, this trend is also seen in the rising popularity of systems biology; a new field of study, specifically designed to make connections between other biological fields, from biome to molecular level. Homo universalis 2.0 Although Homo universalis may seem like a species that is continuously on the brink of extinction, some think that our modern information technology will give rise to a new generation. With massive amounts of information at our fingertips on the internet, the new Renaissance man may not necessarily know much, but is able to look it up in an efficient way [3]. Some obvious drawbacks are the disputable reliability of many sources on the internet, and the fact that some information simply is not digitally available (although numerous digitalisation projects are making an admirable effort), but it cannot be denied that access to multiple scientific knowledge is enhanced. 14 Faculteit Afscheid prof. dr. Sjoerd Verduyn Lunel Op 31 augustus heeft de Faculteit der Wiskunde & Natuurwetenschappen afscheid genomen van prof. dr. Sjoerd Verduyn Lunel, die de laatste vijf jaar decaan van de faculteit is geweest. Origin schoof eind augustus bij de decaan aan om te praten over deze vijf jaar, de toekomst van de faculteit en de uitdagingen voor zijn opvolger, prof. dr. Geert de Snoo. Een interview met de nieuwe decaan van de faculteit zal in januari in Origin te vinden zijn. door: Dwayne van der Klugt Dertien jaar na uw komst naar de Universiteit Leiden, waar u bijna vier jaar als wetenschappelijk directeur van het Mathematisch Instituut en vijf jaar als decaan van de Faculteit der Wiskunde en Natuurwetenschappen heeft gefungeerd, neemt u binnenkort afscheid. In dit interview wil Origin graag ingaan op uw vijf jaar als decaan. In deze periode is er binnen de Universiteit Leiden en onze faculteit, maar ook daarbuiten veel gebeurd. Terugkijkend op deze jaren, waar bent u dan zelf het meest trots op? Het is natuurlijk een lastige vraag, maar het meest trots ben ik wel op het de manier waarop de faculteit nu als geheel functioneert. Hoe we met elkaar een vitale science community hebben gerealiseerd. Ik zie het decanaat als rentmeesterschap, je moet koesteren en versterken wat goed is. Dit moet dan gebeuren binnen de geldende randvoorwaarden. Een goed voorbeeld van zo n randvoorwaarde is de organisatiestructuur van de faculteit. Deze is met haar indeling in instituten historisch altijd zo geweest en dat heeft ook altijd goed gefunctioneerd. Het idee is dan om binnen die randvoorwaarde voor een optimaal resultaat te zorgen. Wanneer een decaan samen met de instituten binnen deze en de andere randvoorwaarden de prestaties van de faculteit kan optimaliseren, dan gaat het goed. Ik heb het gevoel dat het optimalisatieproces in de afgelopen jaren goed is verlopen en daar ben ik trots op. Ik had niet durven dromen dat de faculteit er bij mijn afscheid zo goed voor zou staan! Kunt u een misschien nog een voorbeeld uit de praktijk geven? De profileringsgebieden zijn een mooi voorbeeld. Samen met alle instituten zijn we tot een duidelijke profilering van onze faculteit gekomen. Deze profilering, in twee verhalen, zorgt voor een duidelijk gezicht van de faculteit. Enerzijds is er de Bioscience: the biobase of health, waarin de moleculaire basis van het leven centraal staat en al ons onderzoek en onderwijs op het gebied van het begrijpen van ziekten en het ontwikkelen van geneesmiddelen is samengevoegd. Aan de andere kant staat de Fundamentals of science, waarin ons onderzoek en onderwijs op het gebied van de fundamentele natuurwetenschappen is samengevoegd. De profileringsgebieden die tot stand zijn gekomen, geven een waarom, wat en hoe voor onze faculteit, in de huidige tijd. De tijd is nu rijp voor deze manier van profileren, bijvoorbeeld met een duidelijke rol voor W&N in een samenwerkingsverband met het LUMC en Bio Science Park. In de profileringsgebieden zijn de instituten samen meer dan de som der delen, mijn rol daarbij is om die som bij elkaar te houden en de grote lijnen zichtbaar te houden, daar waar instituten de natuurlijke neiging hebben om wat meer individualistischer te werken. 14 Origin - Universiteit Leiden

15 Faculteit Het samenwerken tussen instituten kan natuurlijk verder gaan dan alleen een samenwerkingsverband. Zeker op het gebied van onderwijs ontstaan er door het land brede bachelors, bijvoorbeeld de Science Bachelor in Amsterdam. Hoe ziet u de toekomst van onze opleidingen in dat licht? De academische wereld moet niet collectief hetzelfde antwoord geven op dezelfde vraag. Iedere instelling moet omgaan met de omgeving op een manier zoals dat bij die instelling past. De manier waarop wij met onze instituten werken, dus vanuit een monodisciplinaire basis, is kenmerkend voor Leiden. Dit betekent natuurlijk niet dat wij ook de uitdaging niet zien om multidisciplinariteit invulling te geven binnen onze faculteit en hier is een duidelijke rol voor de decaan. Belangrijk uitgangspunt blijft dat er voor multidisciplinaire samenwerking een monodisciplinaire basis nodig is. Traditioneel hebben we daarom ook het onderwijs bij de instituten ondergebracht zodat al onze studenten in een onderzoeksomgeving les krijgen en gebruik maken van apparatuur en labs die ook door onderzoekers worden gebruikt. Om invulling te geven aan de noodzakelijke multidisciplinariteit maken we in het onderwijs gebruik van minoren; een bachelor student van W&N moet de mogelijkheid hebben om eens aan het bed van een patiënt te staan en een student van het LUMC moet hier kunnen meedraaien in een het lab. Vanaf één september zal Geert de Snoo u opvolgen als decaan, wat zal voor hem een grote uitdaging worden? Zoals ik al zei is het de rol van de decaan om de instituten bij elkaar te houden, als één faculteit. We hebben twee sterke profileringsgebieden, nu is het van belang daarmee verder te gaan. Naarmate de tijd vordert zal het steeds meer energie kosten om alle partijen met de neuzen dezelfde kant op te laten blijven staan. Toch is het belangrijk dat wij onze identiteit versterken, want pas dan kunnen om ons heen gaan kijken om met meer partijen samen te gaan werken. Dan kunnen wij onze lokale sterktes inbrengen in regionale clusters, bijvoorbeeld met de TU Delft en/of het Erasmus (Rotterdam). Ik zie de rol als decaan van W&N eigenlijk als een Wetenschappelijk Directeur Science, alleen heb ik niet een specifieke opleiding of onderzoeksgebied onder mijn hoede. Ik bedoel hiermee te zeggen dat je ook iets van de instituten kan vragen en verwachten. Sommige mensen vinden dat een decaan alleen moet faciliteren, maar dat vind ik niet genoeg. Soms moet er gewoon iets gebeuren. Sommige mensen denken dat je op die manier werkt, je de wetenschappers van hun academische vrijheid berooft. Maar dit is niet het geval; academische vrijheid staat namelijk niet gelijk aan vrijblijvendheid. Vrijblijvendheid kunnen wij ons ook niet meer veroorloven, in onderwijs en onderzoek gaat het namelijk ergens om en dat betekent dus ook dat er verantwoording kan worden gevraagd, zonder dat dat het waardevrije onderzoek in de weg staat natuurlijk. 'Het is tijd om wat verloren tijd als docent en onderzoeker goed te maken!' Rest de vraag, wat gaat u na september doen? Heel mijn leven heb ik het leuk gevonden om nieuwe dingen te doen. Ik zeg ook graag ja tegen nieuwe uitdagingen. Zodoende kwam ik uit bij de Universiteit Utrecht, waar een mooie uitdagende positie vrij kwam, die goed inhoudelijk aansluit op wat ik wil doen. Door vaak ja te zeggen op dit soort uitdagingen, blijf je jezelf ontwikkelen. Zo heb ik enorm veel geleerd in mijn tijd als decaan, zeker op het gebied van de Life Sciences, een gebied waarmee je als wiskundige niet veel mee in aanraking komt. Al deze opgedane kennis wil ik dan ook weer heel graag gebruiken in mijn toekomstige onderzoek. Zo ben ik bezig met een project in samenwerking met het Astma Fonds. Heel spannend voor mij. Natuurlijk heeft ja zeggen ook zijn mindere punten, het heeft als gevolg dat je ook nee moet zeggen tegen dingen waar je tot dan toe mee bezig was. In dit geval betekent dat het stoppen van het decanaat. Ik doe dat dan ook niet omdat ik het niet leuk meer vind, maar omdat ik graag weer ja wilde zeggen tegen een nieuwe uitdaging nu op het onderzoeksgebied, na negen jaar lang besturen. One of the driving forces behind this build was Frederik Kaiser, who wanted this new observatory so that the astronomers could extend their research. Allegedly that Kaiser waited with the build of the Sterrewacht until the prefect of the Hortus Botanicus was away on a two year long trip to Asia. By doing this he was able to build his observatory right were he had planned it, in the middle of the Hortus Botanicus. In 1974 the astronomers of Leiden moved out of the Sterrewacht and therefore the building is nowadays known as the Oude Sterrewacht or old observatory. In 2009 the building was completely renovated and you can see the stunning result on this centerfold.
