1 Read y orld is an annual literary festival in the Tolhuistuin in the North of Amsterdam. Each year, the focus lies on a different region of the world in which big societal changes occur. A Dutch editorial staff puts together a program based on a selection made by authors, brought up by local curators. In this way, Read y orld aims to offer a new, engaged and current perspective on literary developments in countries adrift. Read y orld is een jaarlijks terugkerend literatuurfestival in de Tolhuistuin in Amsterdam Noord. Elk jaar staat een regio in de wereld centraal waar zich grote maatschappelijke veranderingen voltrekken. Een Nederlandse redactie stelt een programma samen op basis van een selectie van auteurs aangedragen door lokale curatoren. 5 Read y orld we were looking for very promising authors with a sharp and autonomous writing style. READ Y ORLD REVUE, see / zie P ho needs another festival? Amsterdam already has it all: an international theater festival, an international documentary festival, a canal festival, a dance festival, and a dancing festival. But it was still lacking an INTERNATIONAL literary festival. hich is strange, considering that Amsterdam holds so many literary institutions and is frequented by a great deal of international authors. Read y orld stems from the idea that the internet and, more specifically, social media allow us to be more informed about the world than ever, to stay connected across all borders, but that in the end, nothing beats a live encounter. Especially when it comes to encounters with people from area s that make the headlines. For the first edition of Read y orld, we decided to focus on Palestine and Egypt, two countries in a region adrift after the Arab Spring. e asked two well-informed writers from Palestine and Egypt to search for talents who in their eyes write documentarily. e did not specify what this writing documentarily exactly should be, but only told them we were looking for very promising authors with a sharp and autonomous writing style. You were able to meet them all before: in the build-up to the festival, Asmaa Azaizeh and Abeer Soliman were present in the OBA, where they introduced their writers. hat lies in front of you now is the rich harvest of these gatherings and the commitment of a Dutch editorial staff. For three days in a row, you can sharpen your mind, be amazed, and feed upon music and good food at the most beautiful spot of Amsterdam, the Tolhuistuin. Ik ontmoette er Asmaa Azaizeh, en we raakten urenlang in gesprek over literatuur en poëzie, over het verschil in betekenis ervan daar en hier. Eenmaal thuis bedacht ik me wat er zou gebeuren als deze gesprekken in een werkverband samen met een redactieteam in Nederland zouden plaatsvinden en niet aan een goedgevulde tafel. ie zou dan in de war raken van welke uitspraken? Hoe zou die ontmoeting kunnen leiden tot een oorspronkelijke programmering? En nu is het zover. Ik ben vooral benieuwd naar de publieke ontmoeting tussen Asmaa en Abeer Soliman, onder leiding van Kirsten van den Hul. Beiden hebben immers los van elkaar op geheel eigen wijze invulling gegeven aan ons verzoek om op zoek te gaan naar mensen die documentair schrijven. Ik hoor graag van hen hoe ze te werk zijn gegaan en hoe ze terugkijken. Bovendien brengt dit programma ook nog eens drie powerladies tegelijkertijd op het podium, dus ik voorzie een meer dan inspirerend gesprek. Tevens kijk ik uit naar de openingsavond, de Read y orld Revue, wat natuurlijk het moment is waarop alles op zijn plek valt: de gasten, het publiek en de sfeervolle Tolhuistuin. Het ontwikkelen van een splinternieuw literair festival is een van de leukere dingen in het leven: je mag het wiel namelijk opnieuw uitvinden. Het nieuwe aan ons wiel is het uitgangspunt documentaire literatuur. Over dat begrip hebben we lang gepraat, of beter gezegd: onze hersens uit onze kop gepeuterd, om de lading ervan scherp in het vizier te krijgen. Het gaat om méér dan het snijvlak van fictie en journalistiek, het gaat om meer dan een beschrijvende weergave van de werkelijkheid: documentaire literatuur is geen genre dat al bestaat, het is bij uitstek een genre dat ontstaat vanuit de zich om wat voor reden dan ook opdringende werkelijkheid. Radicale maatschappelijke veranderingen, een radicale verandering van omgeving, van toeschouwer tot deelnemer aan het wereldtoneel worden gebombardeerd: schrijvers moeten vaak eerst hun eigen positie bepalen in een nieuwe omgeving voor ze zich om kunnen vormen tot een beschouwende (be)schrijver. Het slotprogramma, Gedocumenteerde werkelijkheid, wordt een zoektocht naar de verhouding van fictie tot werkelijkheid, but not as we know it. e willen de twee curators van het festival, Asmaa Azaizeh en Abeer Soliman, aan de hand van vier verschillende persoonlijke, dan wel beschouwende verhalen een aantal vragen voorleggen die naar ons idee aan de kern van het festival raken. elke rol speelt de af- of aanwezigheid van de schrijver in sociaal en politiek complexe omgevingen? Hoe zien schrijvers hun eigen rol in die context? Hoe gaan zij om met politiek gekleurde archieven en bronnen, en in hoeverre valt er literair te documenteren als de werkelijkheid zich op intense wijze aan de auteur opdringt? Ik kijk enorm uit naar de reacties van Abeer en Asmaa op de verhalen van Frank esterman, Jack Segbars, attijs van de Poort en Ghayath Almadhoun. Hopelijk zie ik je daar!

7 Read y orld This writing is inspired by real life events and not coming from isolated rooms. Asmaa Azaizeh Asmaa Azaizeh AND Abeer Soliman The idea of starting the festival Read y orld was inspired by multiple meetings with two remarkable women: Asmaa Azaizeh from Palestine and Abeer Soliman from Egypt. ho are they? And why were these writers selected for the festival? Asmaa is working as a journalist and a cultural manager for multiple literary and art related events, in Haifa and in Ramallah. Besides that, Asmaa is a poet herself and is able to combine this with her daily job as an anchor for Palestinian National Television. Asmaa: The Palestinian authors I introduced mainly write about their daily lives, their difficulties and hopes. Often, their work is associated with their work in the public arena as a journalist, blogger or cultural and political activist. This brings an added value to their text, since this writing is inspired by real life events and not coming from isolated rooms. But next to their activism, they are true aesthetics, trying to bring delight and fun to their audience, but also leave an impact on the mind and soul of the reader. Abeer Soliman is a multitasking woman as well: she works as a storyteller, and is cultural program manager at the Noon Foundation for Culture and Arts. She introduced to Read y orld not only writers, but also an exceptionally courageous publisher, Karam Youssef, and a strong and outspoken documentary filmmaker, Neveen Shalaby. They stand out, since their approach to their business is new and refreshing and reflects the hopes and dreams of a younger generation in the New Egypt. Abeer: In my society, the function of (documentary) literature is to inspire revolutionary activities and express people s realities. The reason for introducing the selected writers to Read y orld is that every one of them has a unique talent and a very distinguished literary voice. Through their literary work, they express Egypt s pains, dreams, disappointments, hopes, grievances, and desire for a better future.

Het is geweldig dat Read y orld zo veel verschillende internationale schrijvers te gast heeft: om te lezen, om naar te kijken, om naar te luisteren en om mee te praten. En ze gaan ook praten over hun werk met Amsterdamse scholieren tijdens het festival. De leerlingen op hun beurt laten weten wat ze denken over het werk van de schrijver of schrijfster. Het mooie van Read y orld is dat de scholieren een volwassen plek hebben in de programmering: ik kijk uit naar het gesprek dat de jongeren van scholen in Amsterdam hebben met Eman Abdel Rahim en Ala Hlehel. Een frisse Amsterdamse kijk op de zaak. Gaat het werken? Kun je dit doen: de programmering van een internationaal literatuurfestival eerst helemaal uit handen geven om het pas in tweede instantie naar je toe te trekken, te gaan stoeien met de oeuvres die tot je zijn gekomen via de curators, waar je dan maar blind op moet vertrouwen? Kun je dit doen: een Egyptische die haar ervaringen met de bloedige revolutie op het Tahrirplein verwerkt in haar poëzie zomaar bij zo n rare Nederlandse discussie over ironie betrekken, die onbevredigende, zwaar ondergetheoretiseerde splijtzwam van de Nederlandse literatuur? Read my orld is het spannendste programmeringsexperiment waar ik ooit over heb mogen meedenken. Het is een live essay: een onderzoek naar de mogelijkheden van de literatuur, van de literaturen die ons steeds maar blijven ontglippen omdat we dit experiment niet eerder aan durfden te gaan. Het zal alle kanten op schieten; het zal niet bij elkaar gebracht worden; Read my orld zal pas slagen als het voldoende lijntjes opengooit om het onderzoek na afloop voort te zetten. Naar dat onderzoek zie ik ontzettend uit. De bizarre leessessie met de op het oog zo verschillende dichters Ghayath Almadhoun en illem Jan Otten. Het gesprek tussen Badr en Van der Graaff, en niet te vergeten: de intensieve leessessies in de zitkuil die ik met partner in crime Joost Baars zal organiseren. De literaire cocktail samengesteld door Christine Otten op de vrijdagavond, waarin de talen en genres over elkaar heen zullen buitelen. De immer vlijmscherpe observaties van Jack Segbars over de verhouding tussen literatuur en journalistiek. En wat zal er over blijven van Lucebert in een buitenlandse receptie?

12 ProgramA Read y orld 2013 Asmaa Azaizeh is een Palestijnse dichter en journalist, en curator voor Read y orld. Ze studeerde Engelse taal en journalistiek aan de Universiteit van Haifa, en werkte voor verschillende lokale kranten en radiostations. omenteel is ze nieuwsredacteur en presentatrice van het radiostation Raya F en op de nationale Palestijnse televisie, en poëzieredacteur op de website Qadita. Als dichter won Azaizeh in 2010 de Young riter Award van de Abdel ohsen Qattan Foundation. In 2011 verscheen haar eerste dichtbundel onder de titel Liwa. omenteel werkt ze aan een tweede bundel over de mythische held Joris. Ze publiceerde in verschillende literaire tijdschriften en bloemlezingen en trad op tijdens poëziefestivals. Haar werk werd vertaald in het Engels, Duits, Perzisch en Hebreeuws. Abeer Soliman is schrijfster, verhalenvertelster en de Egyptische curator van Read y orld. In Egypte treedt ze regelmatig op voor een publiek van alle leeftijden. Zo maakte ze onder andere een Arabische versie van Heidi, maar ook Shaharazad s Duizend en een Nacht behoort tot haar repertoire. Een van de onderwerpen die Abeer na aan het hart gaan is de positie van de alleenstaande vrouw in Egypte. Een kwestie die sinds de revolutie alleen maar urgenter is geworden. Ze schreef er veelvuldig over op haar weblog en deze columns zijn gebundeld in een boek getiteld Diary of a Single Lady. Kirsten van den Hul is The Change Agent. Ze werkte voor verschillende NGO s, studeerde Arabisch en sinds 2006 werkt ze als zelfstandige change agent voor verschillende opdrachtgevers. In 2011 werd ze benoemd tot VN vrouwenvertegenwoordiger namens Nederland. Kirsten schrijft een wekelijkse column voor het AD en legt momenteel de laatste hand aan haar eerste boek. Nathalie Baartman Cabaretière met een Twentse tongval. Nathalie maakt zich zorgen om de wereld en steekt dat niet onder stoelen of banken. Ze denkt hardop en vindt oplossingen waar anderen niet op komen. Haar wereld is niet die van smartphones en pc s. In haar wereld breien en lezen de mensen in de trein. alaka Badr is journaliste voor o.a. The Egyptian Independent en dichteres. In 2012 verscheen haar eerste bundel (niet vertaald): ithout Heavy Losses. Badr is te gast op het Read y orld Festival Frank Boeijen Zanger, dichter, componist en muzikant. In de jaren 80 was hij populair met de Frank Boeijen Groep, een belangrijke band uit de Nederlandstalige golf die de Nederpop uit die tijd doormaakte. Zijn werk kenmerkt zich door poëtische, vaak melancholieke teksten en melodieuze muziek in een stijl tussen pop en chanson. Tarik Hamdan is Palestijns dichter en musicus. Zijn eerste dichtbundel Once when I was a Sperm werd gepubliceerd in Zijn gedichten zijn vertaald naar het Engels, Frans, Spaans en Koreaans. Hij is hoofdredacteur van Filstin Ashahab een maandelijks kunst -en literatuurmagazine voor jonge Palestijnse kunstenaars en schrijvers. Ook is hij actief in diverse media en kunstprojecten in Palestina en de rest van de Arabische wereld. Ala Hlehel bracht vier boeken uit: The circus (Ramallah, 2000); Stories in the time of need (Beirut, 2004); The father, the son and the lost ghost (Cairo, 2008); y secret affair with Carla Bruni (Qadita books, 2012). Hij kreeg drie keer de eerste prijs van the Qattan Foundation. In 2009 won hij de Beirut39 voor beste schrijver van Arabische afkomst. Lieve Joris Internationaal bekend als schrijfster van non-fictie boeken over de Arabische wereld, Oost-Europa en Afrika. Bekende en bekroonde titels van haar zijn ali Blues, De hoogvlaktes en Een kamer in Caïro. In het najaar van 2013 verschijnt Op de vleugels van de draak. Typhoon komt uit een gezin waarin verhalen, taal en muziek een grote rol spelen: zijn beide broers zijn eveneens rapper en zijn zus is zangeres. Zelf brak hij al op jonge leeftijd door met het winnen van de Grote Prijs et zijn experimentele houding en inventieve stijl heeft hij de grenzen van de Nederlandse hiphop opgerekt (juryrapport Zilveren Harp, 2009). Anne Vegter Dichteres des Vaderlands. Naast dichteres is Anne ook toneel- en kinderboekenschrijfster. In januari 2012 won Anne Vegter de Awater Poëzieprijs 2011 voor haar bundel Eiland berg gletsjer. Andere bekende titels van haar hand zijn Spamfighter en Ongekuiste versies. enno igman Stadsdichter van Amsterdam, bloemlezer en vertaler. Zijn officiële debuut verscheen in 1997 onder de titel s Zomers stinken alle steden. In januari 2012 verscheen ijn naam is Legioen, een bundel die goede kritieken kreeg, binnen een maand twee maal werd herdrukt en begin dit jaar genomineerd werd voor de VSB Poëzie Prijs. Juan Pablo Nahar, geboren 1952 in Paramaribo (Suriname), begon al op jonge leeftijd met musiceren en contrabas spelen. Nahar heeft opgetreden en opgenomen met Jan Akkerman, argie Evans, Jamaaladeen Tacuma, Cornell Rochester, David urray, isha engelberg en Han Bennink en vele anderen. Christine Otten et haar roman De laatste dichters (2004), een meeslepend, muzikaal epos gebaseerd op de turbulente levens van een groep Afro-Amerikaanse dichters uit de Black Powertijd, brak Christine Otten door naar een groot publiek. Van haar hand verschenen ook de romans Als Casablanca en In wonderland. Dit jaar verscheen het autobiografische Om adem te kunnen halen. Read y orld trapt op 13 september af met een wervelende revue, waarin we de veelzijdigheid van literatuur vieren. Nederlandse en internationale gasten van het festival presenteren zich en geven alvast een kleine preview van wat je op het festival allemaal tegen kunt komen. Uit Palestina, Egypte, Twente, Amsterdam en waar de wind vandaan waait. Schrijfster Christine Otten presenteert deze literaire revue met schrijvers, dichters, theatermakers en muzikanten uit binnen- en buitenland. Voorafgaand aan de revue maakt het publiek kennis met de eerste twee buitenlandse curatoren Asmaa Azaizeh en Abeer Soliman. Zij gaan in gesprek onder leiding van Kirsten van den Hul. 13

13 12 Friday / Vrijdag Program Read y orld 2013 Asmaa Azaizeh studied English and journalism at the University of Haifa. She worked for various local newspapers and radio stations. She currently holds the position of news editor and is a presenter at radio station Raya F, as well as the national Palestinian television. She is a poetry editor for the website Qadita. Azaizeh is a poet as well. In 2010, the Abdel ohsen Qattan Foundation awarded her with the Young riter Award. Her first collection of poems, Liwa, came out in She has published in various literary magazines and anthologies and has performed at poetry festivals. Her work has been translated into English, German, Persian, and Hebrew. Abeer Soliman is an Egyptian writer and storyteller. In Egypt, she regularly performs for audiences of all ages with a wide range of works, from an Arab version of Heidi to Shahrazad s Thousand and one Nights. One of the subjects Abeer is passionate about is the position of single women in Egypt, an issue that has become more urgent since the revolution. She frequently writes about this on her blog and has collected these articles in a book entitled Diary of a Single Lady. Kirsten van den Hul is the change agent. She worked with several NGO s. She studied Arabic, and since 2006 she works as an independent change agent on a wide range of projects. In 2011 The Netherlands omen s Council appointed her as UN omen s Representative. Together with atthijs Ponte he makes a podcast called VersSpreken that won the national prize at the European podcast Award. He runs a no-budget publishing house called Halverwege Chapbooks. His writings in Poëziekrant and derecensent.nl touch on poetry, film, culture and politics. atthijs Ponte (1982) is a philosopher, poet and director of Read y orld. At the time, he was still studying philosophy and religion, but after he got his degree he became full time editor in chief at the satirical website. Diederik Smit (aastricht, 1987) is a conservative stand-up artist as well as editor at De Speld. In 2009, he won the Groninger Studenten Cabaret Festival and in the same year was asked to write content for diederiksmit.nl. In 2011, he performed at the Cameretten finals. Sake van der all (Amsterdam, 1979) studied philosophy and journalism at the University of Amsterdam. After several detours, he started teaching philosophy at high school and writing articles for, amongst others, De Speld. aarten esterveen (Groningen, 1981) studied History at the University of Utrecht. The students will ask candid questions about the international poets work and lives and the circumstances under which their work is published. She made her debut with the collection of stories Het besluit van Dola Korstjens (The Decision of Dola Korstjens) (2008), which received numerous nominations and was awarded several prizes. In 2010, her second collection of stories Lastmens came out. Geurts is an active blogwriter and is currently working on her third book. Said el Haji (1976) is a writer, publicist, columnist, blogger, and a writing skills teacher. He studied Dutch literature and linguistics in Leiden and won the El Hizjra Encouragement Prize for his story De kleine Hamid ( Little Hamid ). In 2006, he put together the anthology 25 onder de 35 (25 under 35), in collaboration with Annelies Verbeke. That same year his second novel, Goddelijke Duivel (Divine Devil) came out. Since September 2012 he has regularly been publishing articles in Vonk, Dutch newspaper de Volkskrant s readers opinions and background information section. Sanneke van Hassel (1971) made her debut in 2005 with her collection of stories IJsregen (Ice Rain), critically acclaimed for its slightly absurdist atmosphere, poetic style and attention to detail. Van Hassel was asked to spend time in Sarajevo by Vrede van Utrecht (Treaty of Utrecht). She portrayed this trip in Snippers Sarajevo (Shreds of Sarajevo), which was published in the magazine Tirade. In 2007, the second collection of stories, itte veder (hite Feather) was published. In 2012 her third collection of stories came out, entitled Ezels (Donkeys). David Vann (1966) was born on the island of Adak in Alaska and spent his childhood in Ketchikan. He writes for magazines like The Atlantic onthly, Esquire, and Outside. His collection of stories Legend of a Suicide became a worldwide success and has been awarded with, amongst others, the Prix édicis Étranger, the Grace Paley Prize for Short Fiction and the reader s award of L Express. In 2011, his debut novel Caribou Island came out. This August and September, he is staying at the riter s Residence of the Dutch Foundation for Literature at the Spui. aartje ortel (1982) graduated from Rietveld Academy, faculty of Image and Language and made her debut in 2009 with her collection of stories Dit is jouw huis (This Is Your House), for which she was awarded the Anton achter Prize in In 2011 her first novel came out, Half ens (Half Person), which was nominated for the BNG New Literature Prize and the Opzij Literary Prize. ortel writes columns for several magazines. Every other week she reads aloud a new short story for the VPRO radio show De Avonden. Elke Geurts (1973) studeerde dramaschrijven en literaire vorming aan de HKU. Geurts debuteerde met de verhalenbundel Het besluit van Dola Korstjens (2008), dat genomineerd werd voor vele en bekroond met enkele prijzen. In 2010 verscheen haar tweede bundel, Lastmens. Ze houdt actief een weblog bij en werkt momenteel aan haar derde boek. Said El Haji (1976) Schrijver, publicist, columnist, blogger en schrijfdocent. El Haji studeerde Nederlandse taal- en letterkunde in Leiden en won in 2000 de El Hizjra- Aanmoedigingsprijs. In 2006 stelde hij met schrijfster Annelies Verbeke de bloemlezing 25 onder de 35 samen. Van zijn hand verschenen verder onder meer de romans Goddelijke duivel en De aankondiging. Sinds 2012 publiceert hij geregeld opiniestukken in Vonk, het opinieen achtergrondkatern van de Volkskrant. Sanneke van Hassel (1971) Debuteerde in 2005 met de verhalenbundel IJsregen, die werd geprezen om de licht absurdistische sfeer, de poëtische stijl en de aandacht voor details. Sanneke van Hassel verbleef in opdracht van de Vrede van Utrecht in Sarajevo. Over deze reis schreef ze Snippers Sarajevo, dat gepubliceerd werd in tijdschrift Tirade. These pictures grew into stories and inspired us to ask five writers to create a story in words, about the theme: A view. The things we see are always entwined with our thoughts, our memories, our observations. A view broadens our outlook. But at the same time, a view is an abstract idea in the future, something we wait for, something which offers a way out, or not. De buitenlandse gasten op Read y orld maakten op ons verzoek allemaal een foto van het uitzicht vanuit de plek waar ze wonen. De foto s die ze maakten werden verhalen op zich en inspireerden ons ertoe vijf schrijvers te vragen een verhaal in woorden te maken over het thema uitzicht. at we zien wordt altijd vermengd met wat we denken, ons herinneren, observeren. Een uitzicht verbreedt je blik. aar tegelijkertijd is een uitzicht ook een abstract gegeven in de toekomst, iets waar je op wacht, iets wat wel of geen uitweg biedt. Deze gegevens bieden het uitgangspunt voor vijf verhalen van vijf gerenommeerde schrijvers. Zaterdagmiddag kun je ze in een knusse setting komen beluisteren.
