10 Psychologische Methodenleer, Bachelor Cursusbeschrijvingen Causality Credits 6 EC BM22 Semester Semester 2, periode 1 Prerequisites Propedeuse & Onderzoekspracticum Lecturers Dr. D. Borsboom & dr. L.J. Waldorp Information D.Borsboom@uva.nl, L.J.Waldorp@uva.nl To learn how to model causal relations in the real world. In science nearly all interesting relations are causal. Questions like Why is Joe depressed? refer to a causal relation between several factors of Joe s environment and his personality. Because these kinds of questions are so important in science, it is essential that you learn how to answer them. In this course you will learn how the idea of a counterfactual can be used to make a statistical model of reality which can be interpreted causally. This is a counterfactual: If Joe had not smoked he would not have been depressed. A statistical model of a counterfactual can be used to interpret both experimental (i.e. randomized experiments) and purely observational data. Circumstances will be given under which a purely observational study can be interpreted causally. Furthermore, by using these tools we shed light on more traditional models in psychology, like latent variable models. Lessons Lectures and computer exercises. Take-home questions/assignments. 11 Psychologische Methodenleer, Bachelor Cursusbeschrijvingen Personality for the next century Punten 6 EC Tentamencode BM28 Plaats in het rooster Semester 2, periode 1 Toelatingsvoorwaarden Propedeuse en Onderzoekspracticum Docent Drs. 19 LISREL Credits 6 EC RM07 Semester Semester 2, period 1 Prerequisites Bachelor of Psychology, ACMA Lecturer Dr. C.V. Dolan Information C.V.Dolan@uva.nl The aim of this course is to introduce the student to the theory and practice of LISREL (Linear Structural Relations) modeling, and to instruct students in actually carrying out LISREL modeling using the LISREL program. The LISREL model comprises a large number of specific statistical models, such as multiple and multivariate regression, pathmodels, factor models, longitudinal models, and certain random effects models. The LISREL program can be used to test specific hypotheses concerning the linear relationships between variables. These relationships may be specified among observed variables (e.g., in linear regression, or path models) and/or latent variables (latent regression). In addition such linear relationships are used to link observed variables to latent variables. The possibility to investigate hypotheses concerning the relationship among latent variables is very useful, as most psychological theory is formulated in terms of latent variables, i.e., hypothetical constructs. Multi-group analyses and LISREL models including structured means will also be discussed. During this course the specification of a variety of linear statistical models as LISREL models will be discussed. The emphasis is on hands-on experience in model specification, and on the interpretation of results. Technicalities are limited to mainly elementary matrix algebra and the decomposition of variance, as is carried out in simple regression analysis. In fact, all models can be interpreted in terms of simple regression analysis. The student will practice model specification and the interpretation of results in weekly assignments. 20 Mathematical Psychology Credits 6 EC RM14 Semester Semester 1, period 1 Prerequisites Bachelor of Psychology, ACMA, Calculus Lecturer Guest lectures, different teachers Psychological Methods Information H.L.J.vanderMaas@uva.nl The objective of this course is to impart knowledge of the past and present state of the field of mathematical psychology. The emphasis is on the current main theoretical approaches and areas of substantive application. Mathematical models are applied in all fields of psychology. They are becoming more and more popular, because psychologists recognize that scientific progress in psychology depends largely on the ability to formalize the often informal (verbal) theories used in psychology. Formalization of psychological theories serves two purposes. First, by formalizing theories we are forced to be concrete and precise. This is useful because formalization of informal theories often reveals implicit assumptions, ill-defined details, and unforeseen consequences. Second, formal (mathematical, computational, or statistical) models often lend themselves to empirical testing. That is, we can derive quantitative predictions, or fit models directly to data. This facilitates the empirical investigation of informal theories. The main part of the course is devoted to an overview of formal modeling traditions in psychology, including neural networks, symbolic models, non-linear dynamical systems, cognitive models, psychometric models, and Bayesian models. Model fitting and model verification will also be discussed. Teaching Format Lectures, presentations, assignments. To be announced. Textbooks Hunt, E. (2007). The Mathematics of Behavior. 22 Measurement Invariance Credits 3 EC RM20 Semester Semester 2, periode 2 Prerequisites Bachelor of Psychology, LISREL Lecturer Dr. J.M. Wicherts & others Information J.M.Wicherts@uva.nl To gain insight into the theory of measurement invariance. To learn how to test for measurement invariance across groups in various areas of psychological research. Measurement invariance refers to the situation in which a test measures the same thing across groups. Measurement invariance (i.e., the absence of measurement bias) across groups can be tested by using measurement models such as Item Response Theory models and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (or LISREL) models. The study of measurement invariance can shed light on group differences in various fields of psychology, such as crosscultural, experimental, educational, clinical, and applied psychology. In this course, we will focus on the theoretical and statistical foundations of measurement invariance in a non-technical fashion and we consider various ways to conduct analyses of measurement invariance at the item and (sub)test level. After completion of the course, the student will understand the central statistical aspects of measurement invariance and will be able to conduct a rigorous test of measurement invariance using LISREL. Teaching Format Mandatory lectures with discussion of articles and assignments. Assignments consist of the reading of articles and performing analyses of measurement invariance using LIS- REL. 25 Modern Test Theory Credits 3 EC RM17 Semester Semester 2, period 2 Number of participant Max. 30 Prerequisites Bachelor of Psychology, Programming skills: R recommended Lecturer Prof. dr. P. de Boeck & prof. dr. H.L.J. van der Maas Information P.deBoeck@uva.nl, H.L.J.vanderMaas@uva.nl To provide insight into, and practical experience with, models for item responses. Tests and test scores play a very important role in psychology, both in research and in applied work. Traditionally, test scores are analyzed using classical test theory. This theory is still very influential, yet it has serieus limitations. Modern test theory allows us to develop and test advanced models of item responses. With these models we can test for item bias, solve equating problems and develop computer adaptive tests. In computer adaptive testing items are administered depending on the success on earlier items in the test, which makes test much shorter. In this course students will be introduced to modern test theory and learn to work with software for practical data-analyses for item response models. Teaching Format Lectures and practical sessions. Weekly assignments. Textbooks Hambleton, R. K., Swaminathan, H., & Rogers, H. J. (1991). Fundamentals of item response theory. Newbury Park: Sage. ISBN ,- Examination Dates Will be announced later. Dooremalen Information D.Borsboom@uva.nl To advance understanding of central theoretical problems in scientific psychology. The proper conceptualization of psychological theories, as well as the relation between psychology and the biological and physical sciences, has received much attention from philosophers and theoretical psychologists. Central issues include the mind body problem, the problem of free will, the measurement problem, the possible reduction of psychological concepts to neural states, and the associated question whether psychology is an autonomous scientific discipline or should rather be conceptualized as a subdiscipline of neuroscience, biology, or physics. This course offers a systematic introduction into theories on these problems, by the study and discussion of original texts on theoretical psychology such as Skinner, Hempel, Fodor, Lewis, Nagel, Jackson, Davidson, Peirce and Libet. Teaching Format Lectures and discussions. On the basis of presentations and assignments. Textbooks Literature will be made available during the course.
