This brochure gives you information about the common enrolment regulation in all preschool education and primary education in Ghent. With this regulation we would like to give everyone an equal opportunity to enrol in a school of choice. Some schools have limited places. To avoid queues at school doors you have the possibility to apply your child online through from 31 January 2014 (12:00 noon) until 21 February 2014 (12:00 noon). Afterwards you will receive a ticket which will allow you to enrol in a school. You can find the calendar with the important dates on the back side of this brochure. What are the advantages of applying online? 1. You will get priority over parents who don t use the website. 2. You can apply for multiple schools. 3. You will be ranked according to distance home-school or schoolworkplace. 4. Your chances for a ticket will increase. The number of disadvantaged and advantaged children has taken into account when distributing the places in the schools. 15 BUITENGEWOON ONDERWIJS SPECIAL EDUCATION Besides schools for General Education there are also schools for Special Education. A certificate is required that has been issued by a CLB (Pupil Guidance Center) for a school of Special Education. The enrolment takes place at the school itself. The CLB s (Pupil Guidance Centers) will help you further with your choice. Special education is intended for children who require special assistance because of a disability or learning or behavioural difficulties. It is classified into different types according to disabilities or difficulties of the child: Type 1. For children with mild mental disabilities Type 2. For children with moderate to severe mental disabilities Type 3. For children with serious emotional and/or behavioural disorders Type 4. For children with physical disabilities Type 5. For children who suffer from an illness and receive medical treatment in a hospital or in a medical-pedagogical institute Type 6. For visually-impaired children Type 7. For hearing-impaired children Type 8. For children with severe learning disabilities This figure refers to the type of education that you can find on your child s certificate. 15

The information about your child will be verified. 2. You have to agree with the school rules and the educational project. 3.You also have to sign the enrolment record. 4. 18 1. Your child s name will be written in the enrolment record. 2. You will receive a notice that the enrolment is not realised and your child gets a rank number. 3. The school has to respect this rank number until the first school day in September 2015 for children born in If the child is born later the school has to respect the rank number until the 5th school day of October Waarom werken we met aanmeldingen? 5 Why do we work with an applying system? More and more schools are getting very quickly filled. Though, we would like to guarantee every child a place in Ghent and that as much as possible in the area where you live, so that you have the opportunity to get your child(ren) within walking distance to school. 6 Mag ik mijn kind bij meerdere scholen aanmelden? 6 May I apply for more than one school? Yes. There are no limits. It increases your chances of a school of your choice. 7 Hebben mensen die zich voor mij aanmelden via internet meer kans op een plaats? 7 Do people have more chance on a place who have applied before me through internet? No. When applying for a place for your child time plays no role as long as it is within the prescribed application period. When there is an excess of demand over supply then the distances to school have to be taken into account. 8 Wanneer maak ik een login aan? 8 When should I create a login? During the application period. 9 Hoe kan ik zien of er nog plaats is voor mijn kind? 9 How do I know if there is a place for my child? When you apply to a school you can see how many places of your child s age group are free at the start of the application period. 10 Wat moet ik doen als ik nog iets wil veranderen tijdens de aanmeldingsperiode (bijvoorbeeld nog een school toevoegen)? 18

(For example to add a new school) You can view or change information with your username and your password. 11 Ik heb geen computer, wat kan ik doen? 11 I do not have a computer, what can I do? Please contact the organisation or the school (see page 8). They will help you further. 12 Hoeveel vrije plaatsen worden ingevuld aan de hand van de afstand thuis - school? 12 How many places are filled on the basis of the distance home-school? Maximum of 25% of the available places are given on the basis of the distance to workplace. 14 Hoe bereken ik welke werkplek het dichtst ligt bij de school? 14 How can I calculate which workplace is the nearest to the school? You don t have to do this, the computer will calculate it. The computer takes the shortest distance. 15 Wat moet ik verstaan onder sociale mix? 15 What does social mix mean? With the online applications we would like to achieve a reflection of the society in which our children live by giving priority to advantaged and disadvantaged children. 16 Mijn kind gaat naar een kinderopvang in een school, heb ik recht op voorrang? 16 My child goes to a child care in the school, do I have the right to get priority? 20 17 Wordt er een school verplicht toegewezen die ik niet wens? 17 Is there a possibility that they assign a school that I do not wish? No. Only the schools you chose are taken into account. To avoid that you have no place, you have to fill all schools of your preference. The more schools, more likely to get a ticket. 18 Wat gebeurt er als ik mijn kind niet aanmeld? 18 What happens if I don t apply for my child? Then you can still find a place from 15 April, but most schools will be fully booked. We certainly recommend you to apply! 19 Als mijn kind aangemeld is, is mijn kind dan ook ingeschreven? 19 If I apply for my child, will he also be registered at the same time? No. You have to go along the school. 20 Wanneer ontvang ik een schooltoelage? 20 When do I receive an education allowance? You have to apply for this.
