3 FROM THE EDITOR Dear Bernoullians, While on the doorstep of 2013, it is time for another Groningenieur (GRIR). The first thing that you will probably notice when you look at this edition of the GRIR is that we have changed the layout a bit. Also, although this GRIR has no main theme, we intend to have a main theme in the next GRIR and written pieces in that area. However, to make it ourselves a bit easier we have started with a GRIR offering a broad scope of all recent activities linked to Bernoulli. As you might have noticed Jilles has passed over his scepter of power to the next chairman of the study association and she, and the rest of the board, will introduce themselves in this edition of the GRIR. We have also looked at old editions of the GRIR and we have chosen to re-introduce some old elements of the GRIR,. These are for example a nice movie review and Tim 2 spreading his opinion in his own column. Enjoy reading the new edition of the GRIR. Tim 1, Tim 2, Arjen and me are in the board of Bernoulli for almost half a year now and we really like it! Our first activity as new Bernoulli board was the BBQ in July. When a 3 kg weighing piece of meat is placed on a BBQ it has to be a really good one. And it was! On the 18th of October the famous yearly Bernoulli wokken took place. As always it was an enormous success and everybody could eat and drink as much as they wanted! On the26th of October we had the Karaokeborrel, which was also very awesome. A lot of famous songs were sung and we heard a lot of folk songs in Spanish, Dutch and even Russian! On the 15th of November the constitutieborrel in honor of the new board took place. A lot of other boards from Groningen, but also from Eindhoven and Enschede were present and it was a really good borrel. On the 20th of November there was a case study of the company Technip. It was really an interesting case, with a lot of examples of situations that took place in different companies. On the 4th of December there was a lunch lecture of Teijin Aramid and on the 11th of December we went to Shell Moerdijk. Both activities were very interesting. At the moment we, but especially Tim 2 of course, are very busy with the planning of more excursions and lectures. On the 11th of January we will visit the Gasunie in Ommen. Also, the OSTS casetour is being organized at the moment and I can already tell you that this will take place from the 13th to the 16th of March. We will visit three companies during the casetour: SABIC, Sitech and CB&I. So make a note in your agenda for it! But of course we are also going to do some activities just for fun! On the 15th of January we are going to pubquiz at Het Koetshuys. And we have more activities for you in store, which will be announced as soon as the right time has come for that! 5 THE CHAIRMAN For those of you who do not know me yet, my name is Annienke Kingma. I am 21 years old and I just started with my master Chemical Engineering. I m living in a student house in the centre of Groningen for 4 years now. I am born and raised in Friesland, in a small village near Heerenveen. As you probably already understood from the title I am the new chairman of Bernoulli and I really like to be at the head of such a beautiful association. It is not the first time that I m a member of a board. Last year I was in the board of the Bèta Bedrijvendagen and my function was Public Relations. Two years ago I was the treasurer of De Chemische Binding. So, I have some experience with being a board member. However, I have never been chairman before thus this is a new challenge for me! In my spare time I like sailing and therefore I am a member of G.S.Z. Mayday, the student sailing association of Groningen. I also like swimming, running and playing flute. I really like traveling as well and in May I am going to Ecuador to learn Spanish! Another activity that is taking quite some of my spare time is doing cozy things with my friends or just drinking beer. I am really looking forward to the rest of the year! I think Tim 1, Tim 2, Arjen and me are forming a good team and I hope we are going to make something of it! If you some good ideas for Bernoulli activities, just tell us! 6 THE SECRETARY One day before the official dismantling of the Berlin wall Tim (1) was born in Groningen. After spending the first 4 years of his life in Zuidhorn, he eventually moved to the beautiful Norg in the most beautiful province of the Netherlands: Drenthe. After doing very average/ poor on primary school only due to his cito test results the teachers allowed him to go to VWO, expecting him to fail rapidly. Sick of the small town he chose to start high school in Assen. After passing his high school fairly easy, he chose to start Industrial Engineering and Management, process and product technology in Groningen. In his third year he decided that he liked the chemistry more than the management and followed a pre-master course to gain access to the Chemical Engineering Master where he happily studies now. After starting studying in Groningen he picked up a strange hobby: Triathlon. He found the mixture of swimming, cycling and running really enjoyable. After being active in the board of the Groningen Student Triathlon Club Tritanium, something else was sought after. And since July 2012 he became secretary of G.T.D. Bernoulli. I really enjoy being on the board of G.T.D. Bernoulli and I am really looking forward to the rest of the year with Arjen, Tim (2) and Annienke! P.S. 7 THE TREASURER Hey everyone, my name is Arjen Kamphuis and this year I have got the honor of occupying the position of Treasurer of G.T.D. Bernoulli. Currently I am in the second year of my Master Chemical Engineering, and I have been studying at the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen for almost four and a half years in total. Since I am in last part of my study I am finishing the last few remaining courses and recently I have started my Master research. It was during the, for Dutch standards, real hot summer of 1990 that I was born on the 21st of August. I was born in the small and idyllic town of Marum, which is located in the southwestern part of Groningen, near both Friesland and Drenthe. I grew up having a pretty carefree childhood and at the age of twelve I started attending highschool in the nearby town of Leek. It was only at the end of my high-school period that I started gaining interest in chemistry. Even just before my high-school exams I only had a meager 6 on chemistry. After passing my high-school exams I, just like a lot of other soon-to-be students, still had no idea which study I should chose. After attending a couple of open days and visiting universities across the country I finally decided to subscribe for Chemical Engineering at the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen! Now that I have almost had four and a half years of studying Chemical Engineering I am in the final part of my study. As mentioned before, I have just started my Master research. This is in the combined field of polymer and bio-based products, under the supervision of Francesco Picchinio and Martijn Beljaars. The topic of my research will be the preparation of a thermally reversible crosslinked polyepoxide, via the reversible Diels-Alder reaction. In the next edition of the Groningenieur I will tell more about this! In my spare time I also have a couple of other interests other than Chemical Engineering. One of my hobbies is music, both listening and playing. I play guitar and I am also a small band together with two friends. I also like to do sports, which include fitness, running and wall climbing. As this year s Treasurer of G.T.D. Bernoulli I am really looking forward to the many fun things and challenges this year has to offer us. 8 THE EXTERNAL AFFAIRS More than twenty years ago (twenty-two to be exact) a little boy was born in the village Stadskanaal in the east of Groningen. After completing his high school, also in Stadskanaal, he started studying Chemistry at the University of Groningen. However, during his minor he made the smart choice to do a bachelor in Chemical Engineering as well. After which, as some of you might have guessed he also chose to do a master in Chemical Engineering. Until this day the choice he made to do Chemical Engineering is still a hot topic of discussion with his Chemistry buds as they think he chose for the fast money. But, this is not where his story ends as at the end of 2012 I chose to combine a master in Chemical Engineering with a position in the board of of G.T.D. Bernoulli. Within the board I will fulfill the position of External Affairs and Vice-chairman. In my free time I like to ride my racing bike (though not with this lousy weather) and I also watch a lot of sports (football, rugby, cycling, ice skating etc.). I am positive that the board that has been formed consists of four people that are quite capable to function together and we will try to continue the work that has been done by the former boards of G.T.D. Bernoulli. We want to transform G.T.D. Bernoulli into a stable master study assiociation which will hopefully last for the upcoming years. Tim Meinds 8 January 2013 Groningenieur

10 ONDERZOEK HYDRODEOXYGENATIE VAN LIGNINE Mijn project gaat over de hydrodeoxygenatie van het stofje lignine. Hydrodeoxygenatie is het verwijderen van zuurstof door het toevoegen van waterstof. Planten en bomen bestaan uit drie verschillende soorten materialen, zijnde cellulose, hemicellulose en lignine. Cellulose is een polysacharide en de hoeveelheid ervan geeft de stevigheid van de boom of plant aan. Hemicellulose vormt een celwand rondom de cellulose en is gemaakt van zachter materiaal, dat amorfe eigenschappen heeft. Lignine vult de ruimte tussen de cellulose hemicellulose op en functioneert als een natuurlijke lijm. In Figuur 1 hiernaast is de opbouw van een plant te zien. Het lignine bestaat uit verschillende soorten bouwstenen zijnde p-coumarylalcohol, coniferylalcohol en sinapylalcohol. In Figuur 3 is de structuur van lignine te zien, dit is een voorbeeld van een hardhout. Afhankelijk van de houtsoort en het bereidingsproces worden verschillende typen lignine geproduceerd. Bij dit project worden drie verschillende typen lignine getest. In mijn project gaat het erom dat door middel van hydrodeoxygenatie hoogwaardige chemicaliën uit lignine worden gehaald. 11 worden van de moleculen p-coumarylalcohol, coniferylalcohol en sinapylalcohol, phenol, guaiacol en syringol gemaakt. In Figuur 2 is een typische reactie te zien van lignine naar phenol. Deze reacties vinden plaats onder hoge drukken en temperaturen ( C, bar) in aanwezigheid van een katalysator. Lignine is onder normale omstandigheden een poeder, maar boven de 180 C wordt het vloeibaar. Bij dit project wordt gebruik gemaakt van een geroerde Büchireactor (Figuur 4), die hoge drukken en temperaturen aankan. Het proces waar ik aan werk, wordt semi-continu uitgevoerd. Dit betekent dat de waterstof continu wordt toegevoerd terwijl de lignine aan het begin van het proces als batch is toegevoegd, zie Figuur 5. De waterstof wordt in de reactor gevoerd met een flow van ml/min. De lichte fracties die ontstaan worden met de gasfase meegevoerd naar de zogenaamde bom, een opvangtank die wordt gekoeld met water. Hierin condenseren de lichte componenten. De reactietijd kan variëren tussen 1-8 uur. C6H6.36O H > C6H6O + H2O Figuur 2 Phenol reactie. 12 te testen en de optimale omstandigheden te vinden waarop deze reactie plaatsvindt. Voor katalysator A werd een optimaal resultaat gevonden, maar dit is confidentieel. Katalysator A geeft wel de gewenste producten alleen bleek te reactief. Hierdoor worden de ringen opengebroken en ontstaan er alkanen en aanverwante producten. Er moet dus een katalysator gevonden worden die selectiever is naar de gewenste producten. Een ander doel van het project is om de reactie volledig continu uit te voeren. Zoals eerder aangegeven is lignine een poeder onder normale omstandigheden. Er zijn twee opties, het opwarmen van de lignine tot 180 C of hoger of de lignine oplossen. Wanneer lignine vloeibaar is, is het een hoog viskeuze en plakkerige vloeistof en daarom moeilijk te verpompen. Oplossen is waarschijnlijk een betere optie, maar de kosten van een oplosmiddel kunnen snel hoog oplopen. Deze twee problemen wil ik gaan oplossen met mijn onderzoek, ik hoop in maart klaar te zijn. 13 RESEARCH RESEARCH IN CRETE crete red motorbike rheology COLLABORATION In the beginning of April 2012, I sent my polymer samples wrapped in a big box off to Chania, Crete and followed shortly after. Manthos Kalaitzakis, the PhD of the faculty Sciences in Chania, would pick me up from the airport. After waiting for an hour at the warm and sunny airport, a rambling and overfull blue Seat Ibiza arrived, missing a front-light, the break light, some door handles, and having a smashed back window and some glass shards on the back seat. Besides Manthos, his girlfriend and a street-dog that they had previously adopted from between the garbage, the car was full with pots and pans, several nonmatching shoes, musical instruments and equipment, a huge soundboard, blankets, beach-ball rackets and more garbage in between which me and my luggage had to squeeze ourselves quickly because they were already late for the rehearsal with their band. This first impression was largely representative for the remainder of my stay in Crete. After having organized myself with a place to sleep and a means of transport (a small red motorbike), I spent most of my first weeks at the university looking and asking people for obvious equipment such as spatulas, stirrers 13 January 2013 Groningenieur

14 and beakers to dissolve my polymers. While my polymers were being stirred and shaken, I had to fix the extensional rheometer with which I wanted measure the elongational rheology of my polymers. Five wires of different colors had to be placed in a specific and unknown sequence for the machine to give the correct values. Since the correct sequence was not self-reporting, a measurement was required after every systematic change. This implied 5x4x3x2x1 = 120 different possibilities! After a week of changing wire sequences I found the very last possible sequence to be the correct one! Once I had the machine running, performing the measurements was nice. Heating the equipment to the measurement temperature of 190 C took roughly one hour, which was exactly enough for me to race to a nearby beach on the motorbike, to have a quick swim and return in time for my measurement. What a fantastic working environment, what a Working at the department in Heraklion was very intense as the suppressed PhD s (none of which was Greek) worked daily from 7am to 10pm nonstop (only to eat the ordered pizza s during a measurement). lifestyle! For the shear rheology experiments, I had to contact the experts at the University of Heraklion. I had to rent a car to go there, which broke down underway. After being towed by four different cars for more than 4 hours to cross the remaining 100 km, I finally arrived. Working at the department in Heraklion was very intense as the suppressed PhD s (none of which was Greek) worked daily from 7am to 10pm nonstop (only to eat the ordered pizza s during a measurement). I learned a lot during these tiresome days and was happy to be able to do my PhD in Groningen instead. Because the professor was so interested in my polymers, he came up with many new and interesting ideas and had me perform quite a bit of extra unrelated work. In the end, I had very little time left in Crete to enjoy the country, the nice weather and the beaches. Luckily, on the night before departure, me and my new Cretan friends finally found time to play the long awaited 28 hour long lasting game of through-the-ages. This took place in the presence of five cute newborn pups that were trying to crawl around us all night long. Besides having a very enjoyable stay in Crete, I managed to obtain some publishable results. Therefore, I hope that during my PhD on rubbers here, I will be able to collaborate with the rheology experts on Crete once again. ir. Laurens Polgar 14 January 2013 Groningenieur

15 Mijlpaal in je carriere Je komt ons overal tegen. De paaltjes in het landschap markeren de ligging van onze leidingen. Achter deze paaltjes staat een team van professionals dat er dag in dag uit voor zorgt dat iedereen altijd over aardgas kan beschikken, de schoonste fossiele brandstof van dit moment. Aardgas geeft de minste CO2-uitstoot van alle fossiele brandstoffen. Het vormt de perfecte basis voor een duurzame energiehuishouding omdat het zo snel inzetbaar is. Wanneer de zon niet schijnt en de wind niet waait, kan er met aardgas snel en efficiënt elektriciteit worden opgewekt. Bovendien wordt door toevoeging van groen gas, zoals biogas, aardgas zelf ook steeds duurzamer. Met aardgas kunnen we rekenen op een duurzame, stabiele energievoorziening - nu en in de toekomst. Ons netwerk: spil in de Noordwest-Europese gasrotonde Gasunie is een Europees gasinfrastructuurbedrijf met een van de grootste grensoverschrijdende gastransportnetwerken in Europa. Dat bestaat onder meer uit ruim kilometer transportleiding in Nederland en Noord-Duitsland. We beschikken over een technisch hoogwaardige gasinfrastructuur waarmee we de markt optimaal bedienen. De kwaliteit van deze infrastructuur, de strategische ligging en de vele aansluitingen op internationale gasstromen zorgen ervoor dat ons netwerk het hart vormt van wat de gasrotonde van Noordwest-Europa wordt genoemd. Deze gasrotonde breiden we steeds verder uit met interessante projecten. Daardoor zijn we er ook in de toekomst van verzekerd dat er voldoende gas naar en in Europa stroomt. Onze circa medewerkers werken vanuit vestigingen in Nederland, Duitsland en Rusland. ondergrondse gasopslagfaciliteit bij Zuidwending, nemen we deel aan de bouw van de eerste importterminal voor vloeibaar aardgas (LNG) in Nederland en participeren we in Nord Stream, een kilometer lange leiding die wordt gelegd van Rusland naar Duitsland. Verder zijn we actief betrokken bij duurzame ontwikkelingen, bijvoorbeeld op het gebied van groen gas en efficiënte energienetwerken. 16 ONDERZOEK RECYCLEN VAN AUTOBANDEN Hoe gaan we met afval om? Wat kan er anders? Ook de Europese Unie houdt zich hiermee bezig. In onderstaande figuur staat een schema voor afvalverwerking met hoe groter de schijf, hoe wenselijker de optie. De focus van academisch onderzoek ligt bij de middelste drie opties. Met uiteraard hergebruik als prioriteit. Helaas is voorkomen niet altijd mogelijk en in 2009 werden in Nederland personenauto s naar de sloop gebracht. De huidige regelgeving van autowrakken, sinds 2006, zegt dat tenminste 85% van het gewicht wordt hergebruikt of gebuikt in andere nuttige producten. Echter, in Europa wordt de regelgeving alsmaar strenger en in 2015 wordt dat percentage naar 95% gebracht. De moeilijk herbruikbare bestanddelen zijn de kunststoffen en banden. Daarnaast worden autobanden geregeld verwisseld, voornamelijk door slijtage. In dit project ligt de focus daarom op het rubber van autobanden. Het rubber is opgebouwd uit polymeerketens verbonden met zwavelverbindingen om zo een netwerk te vormen. Deze structuur maakt het recyclen van rubber moeilijk. Tegenwoordig kan het gebruikte rubber in verschillende producten worden hergebruikt. In Nederland zijn drie zelfstandige organisaties, Vereniging Band 16 January 2013 Groningenieur

17 Figuur 1 Weergave project. en Milieu, RecyBEM B.V. en Stichting Fonds Band en Milieu, samengekomen in het Besluit Beheer Autobanden. Een van de toepassingen van het rubbergranulaat is als ondervloer voor kunstgras. Echter er zijn maar een aantal kunstgraszoden nodig in Nederland. Dus andere toepassingen zijn nodig, zoals te zien is in het figuur hiernaast. Als we van onder naar boven werken, zien we dat verwijdering in wezen een andere vorm van opslag is, soms iets creatiever dan normaal. De tweede optie, in beide figuren, is energieherwinning in cementovens. Een voorbeeld van recycling zijn de eerder genoemde kunstgras ondervloeren. Een duurzame mogelijkheid is het recyclen van rubber, of reclaimen, zodat deze kan worden hergebruikt in andere high-quality rubberproducten. Bijvoorbeeld van autoband naar autoband, zoals te zien in de bovenste mogelijkheid. Omdat rubber een netwerk is, is het moeilijk deze te recyclen. Het gebruikte rubber moet behandeld worden. Verschillende processen zijn bekend om rubber te behandelen, zoals ultrasonisch of met microwave. In mijn project kijken we naar de chemische afbraak van de crosslinks in het rubbernetwerk. We kijken naar de kinetiek van de netwerkafbraak op een interne mixer met parameters zoals, temperatuur, shear, concentratie etc. Op basis van het werk op de interne mixer wordt een design gemaakt voor een continu proces op een co-rotating twin-screw extruder. Het doel is om een materiaal te verkrijgen dat geschikt is voor revulkanisatie om zo nieuwe rubber producten te maken. ir. Cynthia Herder 17 January 2013 Groningenieur

18 THE MOVIE TED Peter Griffin plays the bear. On the 25th of October Tim S., Annienke, two externals and myself went to see the movie TED. After the previews were done and all our snacks were long gone, we were ready for the movie. TED starts off with an 8 year old boy wishing for his teddy bear to come alive, and shocker; he does. And apperantly only the wish of a random boy for an alive teddy bear is granted instead of one of the million wishes made on christmas eve which could acctually benefit the world. The teddy bear TED apparently lived the life of Charlie Sheen; popular in the 90 s but now constantly on drugs. That s where the movie really starts, while the now grown up boy (Mark Wahlberg) and his teddy bear are still best friends. Not short after that, classic romcom scenarios start developing and Tim started pointing out to me how much longer the film would take. The fact that TED was directed and written by the man behind Family Guy (Seth MacFarlane) became apparently clear when references to other shows, over-the-top humor and even some of the standard family guy starting with This one time when i was Insert Activity with Insert famous person flashbacks started to pile up. 19 THE MOVIE TED most references were to 1980 s television shows, so not for me The jokes kept us entertained though and the movie gave me a clear insight in how Annienke would look behind the steering wheel (see picture). Fortunately, in the absence of Tim M. a girl behind us was willing to explain all the jokes and gave colorful commentary during the movie, might this be the one Tim? At the end the group was divided on the movie, while Tim S. wanted to get as away from it as possible, Annienke really enjoyed herself. As for me, I m going to give it 2 stars and the next time, watch family guy instead. Finally if you want to see a good Mark Wahlberg movie, you should see Four Brothers Jeroen C. 20 COLUMN PETROLUL Pe tro lul (de; m; meervoud: petrolullen; verkleinwoord: petrolulletje) 1 iemand die al bij binnenkomst op de universiteit weet dat hij in de olie-industrie wil werken. 2 iemand die zich nadrukkelijk afzet tegen de olie-industrie maar ondertussen wel de producten hiervan gebruikt. 3 populaire benaming voor de Roemeense voetbalclub Petrolul Ploiești. Je zou het misschien niet zo snel bedenken maar het bovenstaande woord gaf mij halverwege oktober toch een hoop stof tot nadenken. In de krant viel mijn oog op het woord petrolul en mijn eerste ingeving was dat het te maken had met de olie-industrie. En in het bijzonder dat het ging over de soort mensen dat al bij binnenkomst op de universiteit weet dat hij/zij later wil werken in de olie-industrie. Niet dat ik daar iets op tegen hebt want de oliebedrijven behoren misschien wel tot werelds beste werkgevers wat betreft beloning en werkomstandigheden maar wat mij vaak wel tegen de borst stoot is het volgende. Mensen die bij het kiezen van een masterproject louter kijken naar het bedrijf wat hieraan verbonden is. Mijns inziens moet je altijd, maar dan ook altijd kiezen voor een project dat je leuk vindt. Je doodstaren op een bedrijf dat je uiteindelijk misschien toch niet eens gaat aannemen is een verspilling van je tijd en interesses. Een andere betekenis van het woord petrolul zou kunnen voortkomen uit het volgende. Een vaak gehoorde discussie is het niet al te milieuvriendelijke imago van de olie-industrie en of je dat mee zou moeten nemen in je overweging voor je latere werkgever. De olieindustrie is misschien niet de schoonste tak van sport maar men moet zich ook realiseren dat het winnen van olie altijd al een dirty business was. Echter, het gebruik van de auto om een ritje van 120 km voor een protest tegen de olie-industrie gaat ook zeer zeker nooit de schoonheidsprijs winnen. Misschien is deze persoon wel de echte petrolul. Maar laten we het eens hebben over de echte betekenis van het woord petrolul. Petrolul Ploiești komt uit het Roemeense stadje Ploiești en werd sinds haar oprichting in 1924 drie keer landskampioen. Op zulke momenten probeer ik mij voor te stellen hoe mensen in Roemenië een kampioenschap vieren. Gaan ze net als de Nederlanders de straat op? Mannen én vrouwen als gelijkwaardige burgers? Worden ze met z n allen gehuldigd op het pittoreske dorpsplein van het stadje Ploiesti? Wat wel als een huis boven water staat is dat de gemiddelde voetballer in een Oostblokland moet leven van een schamel salaris dat geenszins in vergelijking staat met wat de gemiddelde petrolul van de eerste categorie gaat verdienen. 22 AGENDA 11th of January - Excursie Gasunie On the 11th of January we will visit the facility of Gasunie BV in Ommen. We will start the day with a presentation of Richard van der Velden (plant manager) and Mark Kwant. We will end the day with a tour over the site. 15th of January - Pubquiz On the 15th of January there will be a pubquiz with G.T.D. Bernoulli at Het Koetshuys. We will gather at Het Koetshuys at 20.45h. The costs are 5,00 for the pubquiz and 3 drinks. 26/27th of February - Bèta Bedrijvendagen On the 26th and 27th of February the 26th edition of the Bèta Bedrijvendagen (BBD) will be held. During these two days you will be able to meet people from recruitment from different companies ranging from consultancy, IT, chemistry and biology.
