Postpropedeuse Na het eerste jaar kies je voor een specialisatie. In het derde jaar loop je een half jaar stage en ga je je verder verdiepen in specifieke keuzemodules op het gebied van: klantbeleving, productiviteit, beleid en planning, online marketing, e-business, product design, business innovation en ondernemerschap. Het vierde jaar staat in het teken van een minor en afstuderen. De vier specialisaties in het tweede jaar zijn: Tourism & Travel Industry (Nederlandstalig en Engelstalig) Internationale bedrijven in de reiswereld werken in een sterk concurrerend werkveld. In deze sector is het belangrijk je te verdiepen in nieuwe (online) business modellen voor bijvoorbeeld reisorganisaties en luchtvaartmaatschappijen. Je leert hoe je deze modellen kunt toepassen en nieuwe reisproducten kunt blijven ontwikkelen, en hoe je door middel van creativiteit en innovatie nieuwe online customer journeys kunt creëren, waarmee je uiteindelijk jouw product verkoopt. Er ligt een focus op innovatie en hoe moderne technologieën te gebruiken om commercieel succesvol te kunnen zijn in de reisindustrie. Wil je weten hoe toerisme een bijdrage kan leveren aan duurzame ontwikkeling van een bestemming? Waarom zijn Travelbird, Booking. com en KLM zo succesvol met hun reisproducten en online klantbenadering? Wat kun je leren over het recreatiegedrag van consumenten en hoe kun je hierop aansluiten met nieuwe concepten, zoals glamping of een unieke B&B? Hoe vergroot je de bezoekersbeleving in een attractiepark? Toeristisch-recreatieve bedrijven moeten innoveren op basis van nieuwe ontwikkelingen in consumentengedrag en technologie. Traditionele bedrijven moeten zich staande houden in een wereld van e-business; nieuwe producten en een andere manier van klantbenadering zijn belangrijk. Je leert het tijdens je managementopleiding in toerisme aan NHTV. Propedeuse Deze opleiding wordt in het Nederlands en Engels aangeboden. In het eerste jaar leg je de theoretische basis. Drie thema s staan centraal: de reisindustrie, de recreatieve sector en de toeristische bestemming. Het jaar is opgebouwd uit twaalf modules, waarin je werkt aan een vraagstuk uit de praktijk, gekoppeld aan basisvakken zoals marketing, organisatie en bedrijfseconomie. Je krijgt les in Entrepreneurship in Recreation & Hospitality (Nederlandstalig en Engelstalig) In de (internationale) wereld van de recreatie- en accommodatiesector gebeurt veel. Nieuwe trends als glamping, de deeleconomie, maar ook veranderende consumentwensen en nieuwe markten zorgen voor een continue uitdaging om bedrijfsconcepten te blijven vernieuwen. Om dit succesvol te kunnen doen, ligt de focus in deze specialisatie op ondernemerschap, productiviteit, bedrijfseconomische en financiële aspecten, waarbij gastvrijheidsconcepten, concurrentie en innovatie een belangrijke rol spelen. Tourism Destination (Nederlandstalig en Engelstalig) Iedere toeristische bestemming, of het nu in Thailand of Noord-Holland is, houdt zich bezig met ontwikkeling en vormgeving gericht op een duurzame toekomst, zodat toeristen (blijven) komen. Hiervoor is het belangrijk publieke en private partijen op een bestemming op waarde te schatten en te leren omgaan met tegenstrijdige belangen. Je leert hoe je economische, politieke, sociale en milieu aspecten omzet in beleid. Je zorgt voor een sterke identiteit die je door middel van een gerichte marketingstrategie uitdraagt. Dit alles om succesvolle ontwikkeling van toerisme in een gebied te bewerkstelligen. 3

5 Attractions & Theme Parks (Engelstalig) Eén van de belangrijkste factoren voor succes in deze bedrijfstak is het vermogen om te blijven vernieuwen. Dierentuinen bouwen bijvoorbeeld klimparken en grote attractieparken groeien uit tot resorts met meerdere hotels. In deze specialisatie leer je de markt te doorgronden en business modellen te ontwikkelen voor nieuwe producten of diensten bij bestaande attracties. Je leert hoe je de bezoekersbeleving kunt vergroten en krijgt onder andere inzicht in marketing, financiën, personeelsplanning, hospitality en veiligheid. Associate degree NHTV biedt ook een tweejarig programma van deze opleiding aan. Je volgt een groot deel van het reguliere traject en sluit dit in het tweede jaar af met een half jaar stage. Met een Associate degree in toerisme kun je direct aan de slag in het werkveld of doorstuderen voor je bachelor. Internationaal In de opleiding is veel aandacht voor internationaal zakendoen, samenwerken en vreemde talen. Je hebt diverse mogelijkheden om naar het buitenland te gaan. Denk aan studiereizen, een uitwisseling, een buitenlandse stage of een afstudeerproject over de grens. Verkort traject Voor vwo ers, mbo ers met een toerisme diploma (niveau 4 van een 4-jarige opleiding) en studenten met een hbo- of wo-propedeusediploma zijn verkorte trajecten mogelijk. 6 hbo-bachelor 3 of 4 jaar Vrijetijdsmanagement relatiebijeenkomsten en beurzen. Events zelf kunnen ook sterke merken zijn, zoals Mystery Land, de Huishoudbeurs, Zwarte Cross en Extrema Outdoor. Deze track leert je creatieve en vernieuwende concepten voor events te bedenken en deze vanuit een business perspectief uit te werken tot nieuwe business- en verdienmodellen. Natuurlijk moet je de events ook kunnen produceren. Attractions & Theme Parks (Engelstalig) Eén van de belangrijkste factoren voor succes in deze bedrijfstak is het vermogen om te blijven vernieuwen. In 3 of 4 jaar word je opgeleid tot professional in deze dynamische en creatieve sector. Na je afstuderen ben jij als vrijetijdsmanager in staat creativiteit, zakelijk inzicht en organisatievermogen te combineren bij het ontwikkelen van betekenisvolle vrijetijdsproducten! Propedeuse In de propedeuse maak je kennis met het brede werkveld. Je komt in aanraking met evenementen, creatieve industrie, sport en multifunctionele leisure locaties. Je werkt in je eerste jaar aan projecten voor echte opdrachtgevers. Aan het einde van het eerste jaar kies je voor een richting waarin je je wilt specialiseren. Cultural Venue (Nederlandstalig) De rol van culturele instellingen, zoals musea, poppodia en theaters, is aan het veranderen. Digitalisering en concurrentie nemen toe, het publiek heeft steeds hogere verwachtingen, maar de subsidies nemen af. en medewerkers in de culturele sector moeten dus op zoek naar nieuwe samenwerkingsverbanden en nieuwe activiteiten, ook buiten de eigen locatie. Deze track onderzoekt de nieuwe rol van de culturele sector. Er is aandacht voor creativiteit en ondernemerschap, marketing en conceptontwikkeling, innovatie en duurzaamheid. Social Innovation (Engelstalig) Bij Social Innovation gaat het om het samen vinden van creatieve oplossingen voor problemen in de maatschappij. We noemen als voorbeeld de vervuilde grachten in Amsterdam. Als creatieve oplossing voor dit probleem is het georganiseerd afval vissen bedacht, wat inmiddels is uitgegroeid tot een groot evenement. In deze track leer je de juiste mensen bij elkaar te brengen en leer je hoe je effectief kunt samenwerken. Vanuit o.a. marketing, projectmanagement en imagineering worden technieken aangereikt waarmee je bruikbare ideeën kunt ontwikkelen en uitvoeren. Postpropedeuse Vanaf het tweede jaar ga je verder in één van de volgende tracks. International Event (Nederlandstalig en Engelstalig) In de promotie van merken worden steeds vaker events ingezet. Denk aan productpresentaties in de auto-industrie, netwerk- en Leisure (Nederlandstalig) In deze brede track komen alle onderdelen uit het vrijetijdswerkveld aan bod. Uitgangspunt is dat al deze onderdelen, denk aan evenementen, culturele locaties, multifunctionele leisure locaties (zoals de Amsterdam Arena), niet op zichzelf staan, maar juist verbonden zijn. Door je brede oriëntatie op het werkveld en je kennis van de verschillende thema s 5

7 ben je in staat als verbinder in het werkveld op te treden. Je gaat op zoek naar het leggen van relaties en naar creatieve business- of samenwerkingsmodellen. Praktijkgericht De postpropedeuse is sterk praktijkgericht. Net als in het eerste jaar werk je aan projecten van echte opdrachtgevers. Het derde jaar staat in het teken van je stage. Vervolgens sluit je je studie af in het vierde jaar met een minor en een afstudeeronderzoek bij een bedrijf of je start een eigen onderneming. Honoursprogramma Een honoursprogramma is een uniek en uitdagend plusprogramma. Per jaar verwerf je hiermee meer studiepunten dan de reguliere student. Binnen deze opleiding zijn er honourstrajecten op het gebied van ondernemerschap en imagineering. Daarnaast is er een traject waarbij je onderdelen van zowel de Engelstalige professionele bachelor (International Leisure ) als de Engelstalige academische bachelor (Bachelor of Science Leisure Studies) volgt. Na dit laatste traject kun je zonder premasterjaar doorstromen naar de Master of Science Leisure Studies. 8 Professional Bachelor 3 or 4 years International Tourism case studies, linked to general courses such as marketing, organisation and business economics. Additionally, you will attend English classes and one other modern language course. Training in professional skills will also be part of the propaedeutic phase. Throughout your academic career, you will receive support from a coach. Main phase After the first year you will choose a specialisation according to your interest. Half of the third year consists of a work placement and in the other half you gain in-depth knowledge through specific optional modules in the fields of: customer experience, productivity, policy and planning, online marketing, e-business, product design, business innovation, and entrepreneurship. The fourth year will revolve around a minor programme and the graduation project. The four specialisations in the second year are: Would you like to know how tourism can contribute to the sustainable development of a destination? Why are Travelbird, Booking.com and KLM so successful with their travel products and online customer approach? What can you learn about consumer leisure behaviour and how can you align new concepts with this such as glamping or a unique B&B? How do you enhance the visitor experience in an attraction park? New developments in consumer behaviour and technology are forcing tourism and recreation businesses to rethink their business models and innovate their operations. Maintaining their position in the fast-paced world of e-business is a challenge which requires traditional companies to develop new products and alternative customer approaches. This is what you will learn during your degree programme in tourism management at NHTV Breda. Propaedeutic phase You can opt for a Dutch-taught or English-taught programme. In the first year, you will develop a theoretical foundation for the rest of your studies. This first year comprises three central themes: the travel industry, the recreation sector and tourism destinations. The year is constructed of twelve modules, in which you will work on real-life industry Tourism & Travel Industry International businesses in the travel industry are operating in a highly competitive market. In this sector, it is important to explore new online and offline business models for, for instance, travel organisations and airline companies. You will learn how to apply these models and how you can keep developing new travel products, as well as how you can create new online customer journeys - to ultimately sell your product - through creative and innovative approaches. Special emphasis will be given to innovation and how you can use modern technologies to achieve commercial success in the travel industry. Entrepreneurship in Recreation & Hospitality There is a lot going on in the national and international world of the recreation and accommodation sector. New trends such as glamping, the sharing economy, but also the ever-changing consumer needs and new markets present a challenge that requires continuous innovation of business concepts. To succeed in this task, this specialisation focuses on entrepreneurship, productivity, business economics and financial aspects, in which hospitality concepts, competition and innovation play an important role. Tourism Destination Every tourism destination, whether in Thailand or in Noord-Holland, engages in development and design aimed at a sustainable future, so that tourists will keep coming. In this process, it is important to appreciate the significance of public and private sector stakeholders at a destination and learn to deal with (potential) conflicting interests. You will learn to integrate economic, political, social and environmental aspects into policy. You will 7

9 create a strong identity which you promote by means of a targeted marketing strategy. The purpose of all this is to develop successful and sustainable tourism destinations. Attractions & Theme Parks One of the key success factors in this line of business is the ability towards continuous innovation. Zoological parks, for instance, are building climbing parks, and major attraction parks are evolving into holiday resorts featuring several hotels. In this programme, you will learn to understand the market and develop business models for new products or services at existing attractions. You will learn how to enhance the visitor experience and you will gain insights into marketing, finances, personnel planning, hospitality and safety. Double degree You have the possibility of a double degree programme by studying abroad at a partner institution of NHTV during the last year of your studies. After graduating you will receive two degrees: NHTV s and the partner institution s. International opportunities International business, collaboration and modern languages are key concerns in the programme. You will have several opportunities to go abroad. 10 Professional Bachelor 3 or 4 years International Leisure Post propaedeutic phase In the second year you have the opportunity to focus on one of the following tracks. International Event Events are used increasingly in the promotion of brands. Just think of product presentations in the car industry, networking meetings and corporate events, and trade shows. Events themselves can also be strong brands, like Extrema Outdoor Ibiza, ID&T New York and Rio Music Conference (Rio de Janeiro). This study track will teach you to design creative and innovative concepts for events and develop these into new business and revenue models, from a commercial perspective. Of course, you will also have to be able to produce the events yourself. At NHTV Breda you can enrol for an English-taught programme in leisure management. You learn how to create memorable and meaningful experiences which contribute to a more beautiful world. In 3 or 4 years time, you will become a professional in this creative and dynamic industry. After your graduation as a leisure manager you will be able to combine creativity, business insight and organisational skills in creating meaningful leisure products! Propaedeutic year The International Leisure programme is delivered thematically. This means that subjects such as economics, psychology, management, communication and market research are dealt with in content-related projects, rather than in separate topics. Examples of modules are: Project, Leisure Basics, Leisure Direction, Event Organisation, Imagineering, and Marketing and Communication. For instance, zoological parks are building climbing parks, and major attraction parks are evolving into holiday resorts with several hotels. In this track you will learn to understand the market and develop business models for new products or services at existing attractions. You will learn how to enhance the visitor experience and you will learn about marketing, finances, personnel planning, hospitality and safety. Social Innovation Social Innovation is about people or organisations finding creative solutions together to problems in society. Just think of the littered canals in Amsterdam. As a creative solution to this problem, litter clearance days were organised, which by now have grown into major events. From the perspectives of marketing, project management and imagineering, you will receive tools and techniques by means of which you will be able to develop and execute useful ideas. International Leisure This broad-based track addresses various leisure industry sectors. The starting point is that all these different elements, such as events, cultural venues, multifunctional leisure locations (e.g. Amsterdam Arena) and attraction parks are interconnected rather than independent from each other. Due to your extensive orientation of the industry and your knowledge of the different themes, you will be capable of acting as a connector in the industry. Creating relationships and looking for creative business or collaborative models will be your key concerns. 9

11 Practice-oriented In this, strongly practice-oriented, phase you work on real-life projects. You can also complete part of your course at a university abroad during an exchange programme. You do your work placement (about seven months) for either a company in the Netherlands or abroad. Besides, you work on a large-scale project, commissioned by the leisure industry and work on your individual graduation project. Honours programme An honours programme is a challenging programme for students who are willing to go the extra mile. As a result you will earn extra study credits. Themes are entrepreneurship, imagineering and academic skills. 12 Academic Bachelor 3 years Bachelor of Science Tourism (BSc) Year 1 NHTV Breda Introduction to the phenomenon of tourism You get introduced to the social, economic and environmental sciences and their contribution to tourism. In the disciplinary courses you get an overview of concepts, theories and their application in practice. The main teaching methods used are lectures, tutorials and field assignments. Year 2 NHTV Breda Deepening your knowledge You will deepen your knowledge of tourism development, policy, governance and law, organisational behaviour and business management. You also expand your academic skills and study philosophy of science. In the interdisciplinary courses in the fourth semester you will explore directions for sustainable tourism development. This year includes a four-week international research project. The Bachelor of Science Tourism is an English-taught academic programme offered jointly by Wageningen University and NHTV Breda. In 3 years time, you will become an expert at researching tourism. Your focus is on exploring tourism from a social, economic and environmental perspective.the first two years of the programme take place in Breda, the third year takes place in Wageningen. After your graduation, you can apply your knowledge to the sustainable development of tourism or continue your education by following an academic master. Year 3 Wageningen University Broadening your view In the first semester you choose a minor - this may be towards your master s study or following your personal area of interest. You can - for instance - choose a minor in international development studies, management studies or environmental sciences. You can also choose to do your minor at another university in the Netherlands, or abroad. In the final semester you get an insight into the principles of entrepreneurship and the latest innovations in policy, technology and sustainability. 14 Academic Bachelor 3 years Bachelor of Science Leisure Studies (BSc) Year 1 Introduction to the core disciplines of the leisure field You will get a solid introduction to different branches of business and social science, as well as research methods, underscoring the varied nature of the leisure field. In semester 1, the courses will focus on the consumer perspective, whereas in semester 2, the business side is more prominent. You will learn to apply your knowledge in several practical cases. Year 2 Deepening your knowledge You will strengthen your knowledge on what kinds of activities people choose in their leisure time, and how companies can organise those activities and profit from them. In addition to theoretical lectures, practical seminars, debates and case studies, you will work on projects for commissioners from the leisure field. In these projects, you will apply the research techniques and theoretical insight learnt in the various courses. The Bachelor of Science Leisure Studies is an English-taught academic programme in leisure. In 3 years time, you will become an expert at finding and understanding answers to complex issues in the leisure sector. The programme combines Business Administration (marketing, economics, innovation and organisation studies) with Social Sciences (sociology, psychology and anthropology). After your graduation, you will be a flexible and all-round bachelor of science (BSc) with a broad background in business and social science, specialised in the diverse leisure field. Year 3 Knowledge expansion In semester 5, you will choose a minor at another university in the Netherlands or abroad. In semester 6, you will apply everything you have learnt by: > considering leisure activities across different cultures > studying fundamental philosophical questions about the relevance of leisure and the ethical questions it raises > investigating the contribution leisure can make to the development of urban space and city culture In the last semester, you write a thesis, in which you will investigate a complex leisure issue.
