1 CHECK Pointers for your formal letter Denk om de juiste adressering, datering, aanhef en afsluiting. (Staan ook op het examenblad zelf.) Zeg geen punten achter adressen, behalve als het een afkorting is zoals Ltd. (Limited). Maanden, dagen (en seizoenen) schrijf je met een hoofdletter: May / Wednesday. Verdeel de briefinhoud in alinea s. Sla na elke alinea een regel over. De inhoud van de deelopdrachten vormt een geode leidraad voor de verdeling in alinea s. Hoofdletter in adressen altijd letterlijk overnemen in je eigen brief. Ik = I. Altijd met een hoofdletter. Ook midden in een zin! Gebruik in een formele brief geen straat- of spreektaal zoals wanna (bestaat niet! = want to) en gonna (bestaat ook niet! = going to). Ook geen sms-taal of andere afkortingen! Gebruik geen afkortingen in een formele brief. Dus geen: I m, don t, he s Maar: I am, do not, he is Schrijf op je eigen niveau. Ga niet bewust ingewikkelde zinnen maken of dure woorden gebruiken! Gebruik een woordenboek. Al is het alleen maar om je spelling te checken! Check of je alle deelopdrachten op de juiste manier in je brief hebt gezet. Tel de opdrachten dus of streep ze af! Na de slotzin kom je afsluiting, dan je handtekening en daarna je naam in letters. Voorbeeld: I am looking forward to hearing from you soon. Yours sincerely, Signature Your Name

4 NOTES How to write an English letter Algemeen Verdeel je brief in alinea s. Alinea s zijn groepjes zinnen die bij elkaar passen (qua onderwerp). Vaak worden de deelopdrachten al aangegeven in de briefopdracht. Schrijf een goed leesbare brief. Laat de alinea s goed op elkaar aansluiten en soepel in elkaar overlopen. Gebruik daarvoor verbindingswoorden als and, but, also et cetera. Voorkom dus dat je hele plotselinge (abrupte) overgangen krijgt. Zorg voor een goede inleiding. Je kan misschien een standaardzin bedenken, bijvoorbeeld (informeel): - Hello, how are you? Do you remember me? I m the girl/boy - Hello, here s a letter from Thanks for the letter you wrote last week. - It was nice to read that. - In your letter you asked me if Zorg voor een goede afsluiting van je brief. Soms doen mensen het heel plotseling en dan wordt je als lezer een beetje overvallen. Kijk eens naar deze opties (informeel): - Well, this is it for now. I hope - Okay, this is about all I had to tell you right now. I m looking forward to your next letter. - Plesae, write me back soon and give my regards (send my love) to In het Engels kun je voor een zelfstandig naamwoord alleen het lidwoord the gebruiken. Het huis wordt the house en niet it house Een zin begint altijd met een hoofdletter en eindigt met een punt of een vraagteken bij een vragende zin. Ook dagen van de week, maanden van het jaar, seizoenen worden met een hoofdletter geschreven.. Schrijf ik in het Engels altijd met een hoofdletter I. Namen beginnen uiteraard ook met een hoofdletter. Gebruik in een brief nooit spreektaal als gonna, wanna, ain t et cetera! Schrijf woorden voluit: going to, want to, am/is/are not. Gebruik je woordenboek! Zorg dat je je woordenboek meeneemt tijdens de lessen/examentrainingen en tijdens je (school)examen. Gebruik je woordenboek om woorden op te zoeken die je niet kent of om de spelling te checken. Weet hoe je moet zoeken (zodat het niet te veel tijd kost)! Soms staan er meerdere mogelijkheden betekenissen achter een woord. Zoek de betekenis die je nodig hebt in jouw brief. Het is niet altijd het eerste woord dat je ziet staan!!! Briefopzet Alles links uitlijnen! Adressering Eerst jouw adres (zonder naam) (witregel) Waar je naartoe / aan wie je schrijft Aanspreektitels Let erop: geen punt na Mr of Ms!!! (Vrouwen kunnen ook worden aangeschreven met miss of Mrs, maar om verwarring te voorkomen kan je beter de neutrale vorm Ms gebruiken! Dit is voor zowel getrouwde als ongetrouwde vrouwen.)

5 Datum De Engelsen gebruiken geen plaatsnaam, alleen de datum. Schrijf de maand voluit en let op de hoofdletter! Bijvoorbeeld: 28 May 2013 Aanhef Begin met Dear, Als je de naam niet weet schrijf je: Dear Sir/Madam, (let op hoofdletters en de komma!) Weet je de achternaam, schrijf dan: Dear Mr Johnson, of Dear Ms Holmes, Je moet na de aanhef WEL een komma gebruiken. Inhoud Hier schrijf je waarom je uberhaupt een brief schrijft. Bekijk ook de HINTS! voor handige zinnen! Afsluiting Hier een paar voorbeelden van hoe je een brief kan eindigen: I look forward to hearing from you. Should you need any further information, please do not hesitate to contact us again. Many thanks in advance for your assistance in this. Ondertekening Als je je brief begonnen bent met Dear Sir/Madam, gebruik dan Yours faithfully, als afsluiting. Heb je je brief gericht aan een persoon van wie je de achternaam kende, zeg dan Yours sincerely,. Let ook hier weer op de komma!!! Bij een peroonlijke brief kan je iemand gewoon bij z n voornaam noemen en begin je je brief zo: Dear Katy, of Dear Brad, Je eindigt je persoonlijke brief bijvoorbeeld zo: Kind regards, Love, Best wishes, Grammatica Zet nooit will direct voor of achter hope. Fout: I ll (I will) hope you write back soon. Goed: I hope you ll (you will) write back soon. Tijdsbepalingen zet je (over het algemeen) achteraan de zin. Fout: I hope you ll write soon back. Goed: I hope you ll write back soon. Wanneer een plaatsbepaling en tijdsbepaling achter elkaar (naast elkaar) staan, dan altijd eerst de plaats en daarna de tijd, dus eerst P, daarna T (net als in het alfabet). Let s meet at Times Square tomorrow. 1. plaats 2. tijd Have (got) = hebben à Bij he/she/it gebruik je has (got) Ontkennende vorm: not à I don t have of I haven t got He doesn t have of he hasn t got Fout: I haven t many bad marks of I don t have got many bad marks. Goed: I haven t got many bad marks of I don t have many bad marks.

6 In het Nederlands gebruiken we heel veel komma s bij meervoud: 1 auto/2 auto s. In het Engels worden geen komma s gebruikt bij meervoud: 1 car/2 cars, 1 house/2 houses. Als woorden eindigen op een -y krijgen ze in het meervoud vaak -ies. Family -> families. Baby -> babies. Let ook op andere meervoudsvormen zoals: One man -> two men. One woman -> two women. One mouse -> two mice. Ken de onregelmatige werkwoorden! Achter in je boek staat een hele lijst, leer ze uit je hoofd! Shall & Will. Shall wordt niet veel (meer) gebruikt, alleen in de 1e persoon enkelvoud en meervoud bij een vraag: Shall I open the window? Shall we go to France? In alle andere gevallen gebruik je will. False Friends etc. Er zijn een aantal woorden in het Engels die qua schrijfwijze en/of betekenis erg op elkaar lijken: Were was/waren We were there. Where waar Where is my hat? Where do you live? We re Wear wij zijn dragen We re in trouble now! He is wearing a blue shirt. Their hun (bezittelijk) It s their dog. There daar There is my hat. They re zij zijn They re here. Then dan/daarna First we go to the cinema and then to the pub. Than dan (vergelijking) A Ferrari is faster than a Twingo. With met With or without you. White wit Snow White and the seven dwarfs. Which die/welke Which one do you like best? Witch heks That witch wants to kill Snow White! I ve(got) ik heb I ve got a TV of my own. If of/als What would I do if I didn t have a TV? 9 ORAL TEST In pairs; the test takes about 25 minutes This test consists of four parts: Part 1: Reading aloud Part 2: Describing an object Part 3: Describing a picture Part 4: Discussing Part 1: Reading aloud: You will get a text which you can practice reading for a couple of minutes. Then you will read the text for your teacher. He/she will check your pronunciation. Part 2: Describing an object: Your teacher will choose an object for you to describe. You will tell which colour it is, the shape of it, what it is made of (material) and the usage. (See appendix A.) Part 3: Describing a picture: Your teacher will show you a picture which you are going to describe. You have to talk about the picture and tell at least 5 things about it. Don t forget to use full sentences when describing. Part 4: Discussing: In appendix B will receive a couple of statements (10 statements) from your teacher. You will choose 5 statements that you are going to prepare together with your partner. You have to tell at least 3 cons and 3 pros about these topics. On the day of the test your teacher is going to choose 2 statements from the ones that you have prepared, and tell who is going to be for and who is going to be against this statement. Therefore it is very important that you prepare both cons and pros. You will have a discussion using these points that you prepared. So, if someone tells a con, the other person has to react to that before he/she brings her own point of view. You also need to come up with your own (1) statement! It can be about anything: surprise us! Here you also need to come up with 3 pros and 3 cons. In any case: make it a conversation! Talk to each other, learn to react to one another et cetera If you want to see how we are going to grade you with this oral test, check appendix C.
