Voorwoord Vlaams minister van Sport Preface Flemish minister of Sports De Vlaamse overheid erkent de belangrijke maatschappelijke rol van sport en de bijdrage die sport levert aan de fitheid en de gezondheid van een individu en de samenleving. Het Vlaamse Regeerakkoord stelt daarom dat sport een vaste gewoonte moet worden in het leven van elke Vlaming. Om deze doelstelling te realiseren is het promoten van sport van essentieel belang. Hiervoor ondersteunen we onder andere organisaties die via een sterk onderbouwd concept innovatieve evenementen organiseren van sporten die een beperkte mediaaandacht genieten. Op die manier kan de sport gepromoot worden bij een groter publiek. We willen hierbij via een breed sportaanbod de mensen de kans geven om kennis te maken met diverse sporten en zo hun sportparticipatiegedrag bevorderen. Belangrijke sportevenementen zijn het instrument bij uitstek om een voorbeeldfunctie te vervullen. De Vlaamse overheid reikt sportevenementen met een internationale uitstraling, zoals de Flanders Judo Cup 2016, daarom graag de hand. Philippe Muyters Vlaams minister van Sport 3

4 2. Voorwoord voorzitter Vlaamse Judofederatie Preface President Flemish Judo Federation De Flanders Judo Cup is dit jaar aan zijn 11de editie toe. Wat ooit begon als een groot avontuur is vandaag uitgegroeid tot een vaste waarde binnen het judogebeuren. Op een professionele manier ontvangen wij delegaties van over de hele wereld en dit in samenwerking met vele vaste partners. In bijzonder willen we Judoteam Agglorex Lommel en de stad Lommel bedanken voor hun trouwe samenwerking. Ook voor onze Vlaamse judoka s is dit evenement een unieke kans om in contact te komen met de internationale top. Als voorzitter van de VJF vind ik het alvast een eer om jullie te mogen verwelkomen in Lommel. The Flanders Judo Cup will be held for the 11th time this year. What started as a big adventure today has become a fixed value in the world of judo. In a professional manner, we receive delegations from all over the world in collaboration with many loyal partners. In particular we want to thank Judo Team Agglorex Lommel and the city of Lommel for their loyal cooperation. This event is a unique opportunity for our Flemish judokas to get in touch with the international top. As the president of the VJF I'm looking forward to welcome you in Lommel. 5 3. Voorwoord van de Burgemeester stad Lommel Judo doe je niet alleen, je hebt altijd een ander, een partner, nodig om verder te kunnen komen. 'Judo is duo', is dan ook een gevleugelde zegswijze binnen deze sport. Als Stad Lommel willen we graag die partner zijn. Met onze uitstekende sportinfrastructuur bieden we de clubs en hun atleten de kans zich optimaal te ontplooien. In de toekomst zal de Stad Lommel daarom blijven investeren in nieuwe en verbeterde sportaccommodatie. We willen daarmee onze positie als sportieve stad verstevigen en hebben de gezonde ambitie de sporthoofdstad van Vlaanderen te worden. De sportclubs zijn onze ambassadeurs en de belangrijke tweede man in dit duo. Als partners streven we dezelfde doelen na: sport een belangrijke plaats geven in onze samenleving! Ook voor de organisatoren van de Flanders Judo Cup willen we de juiste partner zijn. Stad Lommel is daarom erg tevreden dat De Soeverein voor de 11de keer de rol van gastheer voor de Flanders Judo Cup kan zijn. Tijdens het weekend van 29 en 30 oktober zullen bijna 800 judoka s uit meer dan 20 landen met elkaar de sportieve strijd aanbinden. Het evenement bewijst dat organisatoren in Lommel de steun krijgen die ze verdienen. Lommel wil blijven groeien in sportbeleving en vindt in de Flanders Judo Cup een belangrijke partner om deze ambitie waar te maken. 7 3. Preface of the Major of the city of Lommel You can t do judo alone, you always need someone else, a partner in order to come further. Judo is duo is a correct saying within this sport. We, the city of Lommel, want to be that partner. With our excellent sports infrastructure, we offer clubs and their athletes the chance to develop optimally. This is also the reason why the city of Lommel will keep on investing in new and improved sports infrastructure in the future. We want to strengthen our position as a sportive city and we have the healthy ambition to become the sports capital of Flanders. The sports clubs are our ambassadors and the important second man in this duo. As partners we are aiming for the same goals: to give sport an important place in our society! We also want to be the right partner for the organizers of the Flanders Judo Cup. The city of Lommel is very satisfied that the Soeverein Arena can host the 11th edition of the Flanders Judo Cup. During the weekend of the 29th and 30th of October, 800 judokas from over 20 different countries will fight for the titles. The event proves that organisers in Lommel get the support they deserve. Lommel wants to keep on growing in sports experience and thinks the Flanders Judo Cup is an important partner to make this ambition come true. Voorwoord/ Preface JC Agglorex Lommel In aanloop naar onze 11de editie van de Flanders Judo Cup kunnen wij met fierheid stellen dat onze slogan: The Place to be for Champions de ideale slogan is voor onze organisatie, want met een sterk internationaal deelnemersveld van 800 judoka s uit meer dan 20 landen moet je een echte kampioen zijn om het podium te bereiken. De 3 belangrijkste ingrediënten zijn ook aanwezig om een perfecte organisatie te realiseren. Vooreerst beschikken wij met sportarena De Soeverein over een prachtige accommodatie en verder met Center-Parcs over een prachtig atletendorp, maar het allerbelangrijkste blijven de mensen achter de organisatie. Met de steun van de stad Lommel, de sportieve ambitie van de Vlaamse judofederatie en de ervaring van de vrijwilligers van JC Agglorex Lommel, beschikken wij over een dreamteam. Tot slot zou ik alle atleten, coaches en toeschouwers veel succes willen wensen en vooral een zeer prettig verblijf in onze gastvrije stad Lommel. In the run-up to our 11th edition of the Flanders Judo Cup we can proudly say that our slogan: The Place to be for Champions is a perfect slogan for our organisation because with a strong international field of 800 judokas from over 20 different countries you need to be a real champion to reach the podium. The 3 main ingredients are also present to make a perfect organisation. First of all is the Soeverein Arena a wonderful accommodation and secondly Center Parcs facilitates a beautiful athlete village. But the most important are the people behind the organisation. With the support of the city of Lommel, the sportive ambitions of the Flemish Judo Federation and the experience of the volunteers of JC Agglorex Lommel, we have a dream team. Finally, I would like to wish all athletes, coaches and spectators a lot of success and above all a very pleasant stay in our hospitable city of Lommel. 10 5. Japan at the Flanders Judo Cup 2016 As a judoka and a poet, I would like to compare judo as a journey - you do not know what will happen, yet courageously put yourself in it and pave the way. Each moment of the journey is unique and temporary, and it is only when you reflect on the experiences that you realize the significance of the journey taken. Judo has inspired me to appreciate and challenge myself in such unique moments in life. When I was first invited to the Flanders Judo Cup 2013 as a winner of the Fourth Japan-EU English Haiku Contest, I never knew how the journey was going to unfold. Today, on the special occasion of the 150 years of friendship between Belgium and Japan, I feel pure joy to be able to come back to Lommel and welcome the first Japanese delegation to the Flanders Judo Cup. Judo, which we say is more than a sport, has been a significant guide in my life; it has not only taught me about defeat, but also to accept and grow from such challenges. Furthermore, it is the people I have connected through judo who have given me faith and strength to live life fully. That is why I feel thankful that the journey has taken me back here to create another history as a part of the international judo family. Finally, I would like to share with you a haiku I have written with a hope that 11th edition of the Flanders Judo Cup will be the beginning of an extraordinary journey for each of us: Judo brings us together Sharing deepens friendship Here, begins the journey As a token of the 150 years of friendship between Japan and Belgium Ms. Misato Oi will accompany the Japanese delegation of the Tokyo Women s College of Physical Education during the Flanders Judo Cup and International Training Camp. 10

11 6. Ontstaan van de Flanders Judo Cup 11 Op zondag 29 oktober 2006 ging de eerste hernieuwde editie van de Trofee van Vlaanderen door onder de nieuwe naam Flanders Judo Cup. Anno 2016 is Flanders Judo Cup uitgegroeid tot één van de belangrijkste internationale tornooien in de regio. De traditie van 35 jaar ervaring, in combinatie met nieuwe impulsen heeft de Flanders Judo Cup naar een hoger niveau getild over de jaren heen. De ambitie om een toptornooi in Vlaanderen te organiseren was in 2006 reeds geruime tijd door de wandelgangen van de Vlaamse Judofederatie aan het sluimeren. De Trofee van de Vlaamse Liga, later omgedoopt tot de Trofee van Vlaanderen was 36 jaar geleden met deze visie ontstaan. Echter werd de doelstelling van een tornooi met internationale uitstraling met de Trofee van Vlaanderen volledig bereikt. Om ook Vlaamse topprestaties in de toekomst te kunnen verzekeren was het onze plicht onze Vlaamse beloftevolle jongeren de kans te geven zich in eigen land te laten meten met de buitenlandse concurrentie op een tornooi met internationale uitstraling. De Flanders Judo Cup was geboren en wij zijn blij en fier dat de we 10 jaar later zijn uitgegroeid tot één van de belangrijkste internationale tornooien in de regio. Vanaf 2012 kende de FJC een succesvolle uitbreiding naar 8 wedstrijdmatten. Vorig jaar namen 750 judoka s uit 14 verschillende landen deel; kwantiteit én kwaliteit verzekerd! Daarnaast nemen jaarlijks aan de internationale stage tussen tot 350 judoka s uit een vijftiental landen deel (incl. Belgisch Nat. Team). Locatie: Arena De Soeverein - Lommel Met de Arena Soeverein werd gekozen voor een eigentijdse hypermoderne topevenementenhal die aan alle eisen van een toptornooi voldoet. Met Lommel als gaststad, gelegen midden in de Euroregio, heeft deze locatie voor de 11 de maal de Europese interesse gewekt. Historiek Op 1 mei 1970 werd voor het eerst de Trofee van de Vlaamse Liga ingericht te Brugge. Meer dan 250 judoka s namen deel, met vertegenwoordiging uit Nederland, Engeland en Frankrijk. Met de fusie van de Vlaamse Liga en de Vlaamse Judobond in 1981 is de naam omgevormd tot Trofee van Vlaanderen. De voorbije jaren was de belangstelling bij de jeugd nog altijd zeer groot, met jaarlijks zo n 550 deelnemers en een veelvoud aan supporters. Met de 36ste editie van de Trofee van Vlaanderen kon de Vlaamse Judofederatie met fierheid terugkijken naar een rijk verleden. Eind jaren negentig koesterde de Vlaamse Judofederatie reeds de ambitie om de Trofee van Vlaanderen op de internationale kalender te plaatsen. Met de 36ste editie van de Trofee van Vlaanderen zagen wij de kans deze droom te realiseren onder de vorm van de Flanders Judo Cup.

12 6. The beginning of the Flanders Judo Cup On the 29th of October 2006 the first renewed edition of the Trophy of Flanders continued under the new name The Flanders Judo Cup. Anno 2016 the Flanders Judo Cup has become one of the major int. tournament in the region. The tradition and experience of 35 years, combined with new impulses made the Flanders Judo Cup climb to a higher level over the years. In 2006 the Flemish Judo Federation had the ambition to organize a top tournament in Flanders already for some years. The Trophy of the Flemish League, later renamed the Trophy of Flanders was originated 36 years ago with the same vision. The objective of creating a tournament with an international reputation was achieved with the Trophy of Flanders. In order to ensure Flemish high level performances in the future it was our duty to our Flemish talented youth to give them an opportunity to compete and train with international opponents in a tournament with an international reputation in their own country. The Flanders Judo Cup was born and we are pleased and proud that after 10 years this tournament has become one of the major int. tournament in the region. In 2012, we successfully expanded to 8 tatami. 750 judokas from fourteen different countries took part in the last edition; quantity and quality guaranteed! Beside the tournament between up to 350 judoka s of 15 nations participated at the Int. Training Camp in the previous years (incl. the Belgian Nat. Team). Location: The Soeverein Arena - Lommel The Soeverein Arena was chosen for its ultramodern high level sports venues fulfilling all the requirements of a top tournament. Lommel the host city, located in the Euregion, received once again European interest with this 11th edition. History On May 1, 1970, The Trophy of the Flemish League was organized for the first time in Bruges. More than 250 judokas participated, with representation of the Netherlands, England and France. With the fusion of the Flemish League and the Flemish Judo Federation in 1981, the name was changed to the "Trophy of Flanders". The interest of the youth was the last years still very big, with annually almost 550 participants and a multitude of supporters. With the 36th edition of the "Trophy of Flanders", the Flemish Judo Federation could look back with pride to a rich past. At the end of the nineties, the Flemish Judo Federation already cherished the ambition to put the "Trophy of Flanders" on an international calendar. With the 36th edition of the Trophy of Flanders we saw the chance to realize this dream in the form of the Flanders Judo Cup. 12
