3 Alloul, Houssine Diplomatieke ontmoetingen: een cultuurhistorische analyse van de Belgisch-Osmaanse relaties ( ) Universiteit Antwerpen Promotor: Prof. Dr. H. de Smaele This project studies the diplomatic relations between Belgium and the Ottoman Empire ( ) as cultural encounters, placing the official representatives of both states at the forefront. The dynamics and particular tendencies of these encounters will be uncovered through a close examination of diplomatic practice in its wide diversity, ranging from the ordinary (everyday) duties of emissaries (information-gathering on the host country, exchanging visits, official meetings etc.), to matters of diplomatic convention (protocol, ceremonial). Through the use of a twofold comparative research perspective, equal attention goes to the envoys in Istanbul and those in Brussels. The principal source materials for this research project are the official dispatches sent by the representatives. They offer a unique window to the diplomats world and allow for a nearly ethnographic reconstruction of nineteenth-century diplomacy. By analyzing actual diplomatic encounters in their historical specific settings, this project will (1) enrich our knowledge of the history of Belgian-Ottoman relations from a new and fresh perspective, and (2) contribute to the revision and dedramatization of some of the findings in grand meta-narratives (like Orientalism and the Clash of Civilizations ), that distort and essentialize East-West relations. Alphen, Elise van Hervormers van zedelijkheid. De politieken van de humanistische en homoseksuele beweging in naoorlogse Nederland Universiteit voor Humanistiek Promotor: Prof. Dr. P. Derkx, Prof. Dr. K Hofmeester; Dr. U. Jansz eva@uvh.nl Via een bestudering van de politiek van de humanistische en homoseksuele beweging in het naoorlogse Nederland ( ) wil ik meer inzicht vergaren in de politieke en morele omwentelingen van de jaren zestig en zeventig in Nederland. Berg, Philip van den De NSB in het Westland: haar relatie met en invloed op het lokaal bestuur, de bezettende macht en de samenleving. Promotor: Prof. Dr. J. Kennedy en Prof. Dr. P. Romijn bergpm@kabelfoon.nl Hoewel de laatste jaren een politieke beweging als de Nationaal Socialistisch Beweging (NSB) steeds meer het onderwerp is geworden van wetenschappelijk onderzoek, blijft het functioneren van deze politieke beweging op regionaal en lokaal niveau onderbelicht. Als 3

4 gevolg hiervan is weinig tot niets bekend over de invloed van de NSB op het lokale bestuur ten tijde van de bezettingsperiode Belangrijke vragen zoals: de onderlinge invloeden en verhoudingen; verandering, continuïteit en vernieuwing op lokaal en regionaal niveau tussen de NSB, de bezettende macht en het bestuursapparaat blijven hierdoor grotendeels onbeantwoord op de plank liggen. Voorbeelden hiervan hebben onder andere betrekking op: -de totstandkoming en het functioneren van de NSB en aanverwante maatschappelijke organisaties. -de invloed van de NSB op het lokaal bestuur. -de onderlinge verhoudingen en relaties tussen de NSB, de bezettende macht, het lokaal bestuur en verschillende maatschappelijke organisaties. -het functioneren van het lokaal bestuur en de onderlinge verhoudingen. -de houding, werkwijze en de invloed van de burgemeesters op bijvoorbeeld het bestuurlijk beleid. In het verlengde hiervan laat recent wetenschappelijk onderzoek zien dat juist dit soort vragen een antwoord verdient te krijgen, zoals ook blijkt uit de positie en het functioneren van de burgermeesters ten tijde van de bezetting. Het antwoord van dit onderzoek zal inzichtelijk maken of de NSB een bijdrage geleverd heeft aan bestuurlijke impulsen op lokaal niveau en of ze daarin een sleutelrol speelde en zo ja, op welke wijze de NSB dat eventueel vorm en inhoud heeft gegeven. Blaauw, Jan Censorship of history textbooks Rijksuniversiteit Groningen Faculteit der Letteren Promotor: Prof. D. Bosscher Textbooks constitute a specific platform for the dissemination of historical data. They are authoritative by design and seek, through instruction, to influence new generations of citizens. Because of the potentialeffectiveness of education, the selection of the precise content of textbooks is important and delicate at the same time. As a course in education, history in particular has often attracted political attention because of its usefulness as a source for legitimation of states, governments and policies. This study undertakes a comparative analytical study of the phenomenon of censorship of history textbooks in the context of public controversies over history education. The core of the study will compare primary and secondary education cases from Japan, India, Greece, the US and the Netherlands. One of the key themes for this overall comparison is the so-called chain of authorship, which will highlight the agents involved in the process of producing history textbooks and the mandates they have been given to do their jobs. One example: the Japanese government is by Japanese law empowered to certify history textbooks on educational qualities but also on content. This system choice has triggered numerous public controversies and accusations of government censorship of history. This PhD (aio) research project is one of three projects in the framework of an NWO sponsored research programme with the central theme Censorship of History. The other two projects include a study of the accessibility of archives (aio) and a study into the censorship of posthumous privacy by management of reputation of deceased public figures (postdoc). The project is headed by dr. Antoon de Baets at the University of Groningen. 4

5 Bock, Greet de Aristocratische vrouwen in de wandelgangen van de politiek. Gender, seksuele moraal en de publieke sfeer in Wenen en Londen, Universiteit Gent Promotor: Prof. Dr. G. Deneckere Om een beter zicht te krijgen op de interactie van gender, politiek en mediacultuur in de eerste helft van de negentiende eeuw, analyseert mijn project de effecten van het gebruik van seksschandalen als een politiek wapen. Hiervoor vertrek ik vanuit twee tegengestelde contexten, zijnde Londen en Wenen. Dit laat toe om grip te krijgen op het potentieel van persorganen om via hun berichtgeving elitevrouwen (en mannen) te dwingen om zich te conformeren aan een burgerlijke, preutsere seksuele moraal, geheel in de lijn van het victoriaanse huiselijkheidsideaal. In welke mate leidde een bepaald mediaregime ertoe dat vrouwen die in de hoogste kringen verkeerden politieke zelfbeschikking verloren, behielden of zelfs verwierven? Kort gezegd onderzoek ik, gebruikmakend van seksschandalen als observatorium, de onderhandelde interpretatie van het publieke en het private, en van het formele en het informele. Boer, Hugo den Allieeren door separeeren? Kerkelijke differentiatie en culturele integratie: het debat over de kerk in de negentiende eeuw. Theologische Universiteit Kampen Promotor: Prof. Dr. G. Harinck, Prof. Dr. M. te Velde Vanaf 1840 veranderde het denken en de mentaliteit in Nederland op veel terreinen. Er ontstaat onder andere meer ruimte én waardering voor publiek debat en sociaal-maatschappelijk leven. Daarmee werd ook de organisatie van deze en andere terreinen ter hand genomen. Niet alleen op politiek en maatschappelijk terrein zien we richtingen, partijen en de organisatie hiervan ontstaan, maar ook in de kerk ontstaat een zogenaamd partijenstelsel. Nadat de diverse richtingen en partijen in de kerk rond de jaren 1860 zo n beetje benoemd zijn ontstaat ook de vraag naar de zelfstandige organisatie daarvan, waarbij verschillende partijen een onderscheiden kerkelijke organisatie ontwikkelen, die in nauw verband lijkt te staan niet alleen met de leer van de kerk maar ook met de visies op de historiciteit en traditie van de kerk. Deze organisatorische én historiserende manier van denken en benaderen van godsdienstige verschillen is een nieuw verschijnsel waar in het debat over de kerk op een eigen manier is omgegaan. In mijn onderzoek wil ik de oorsprong en de oorzaken van deze veranderde manier van denken over de kerk als organisatie nagaan vanuit een breed historisch, ecclesiologisch en wijsgerig 5

6 kader, waarbij de gelijksoortige of parallelle ontwikkelingen op politiek en sociaalmaatschappelijk gebied steeds worden bevraagd op hun positie ten opzichte van de kerkelijke ontwikkelingen. Naast de vraag waarom er een organisatiecultuur op kerkelijk terrein ontstond, staat de vraag centraal hoe er tegen deze organisatievorming en -vormen is aangekeken en hoe m.n. gereformeerde kerkelijke richtingen hun organisatorische positie hebben gelegitimeerd. Een onderzoek naar Nederlandse bewindspersonen die wegens een politiek conflict onder vuur kwamen te liggen ( ) Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen Promotor: Prof. Dr. C. van Baalen en Prof. Dr. R. Aerts Wie deel uitmaakt van een kabinet moet bereid zijn overleg te voeren en compromissen te sluiten om de gewenste politieke resultaten te bereiken. Maar wat als een politiek conflict hoog oploopt en een bewindspersoon voor de keuze komt te staan: opstappen of aanblijven? Welke actoren en factoren spelen hierbij een rol? De hoofdvraag van ons onderzoek is: wie, met welke motieven, bepaalt of een bewindspersoon bij een politiek conflict moet gaan of mag blijven? Een minister in Nederland is naast leidinggevende van een departement ook lid van een coalitiekabinet. Die coalitie is vaak een broos bouwwerk van diverse partijen die alleen gezamenlijk kunnen rekenen op het vertrouwen van het parlement. Daarom brengt een individuele politieke crisis, het (dreigende) aftreden van een bewindspersoon, zoveel politieke spanning met zich mee. Het vertrek van een individu kan immers het voortbestaan van de coalitie in gevaar brengen. In Nederland zijn er geen wettelijke regels die bepalen wanneer een bewindspersoon moet gaan. Er zijn twee politieke stelregels van toepassing, de ministeriële verantwoordelijkheid en de vertrouwensregel, maar de interpretatieruimte daaromheen is ruim. Het politieke leven van een bewindspersoon hangt af van de dynamiek van het politieke bedrijf. Deze studie geeft inzicht in het functioneren van het politieke bedrijf in de twintigste eeuw en van veranderingen in de politieke cultuur. 7 An international comparative study into the rise and fall of the federal state structure of Indonesia. Firstly, it examines the motives and interests within and outside Indonesia which led to the new state structure in Secondly, it explores the coming into being of the United States of Indonesia between 1946 and Thirdly, it studies the transition to a unitary state in the nine months between December 1949 and August The study will examine critically the traditional view of the influence of a Dutch strategy of divide and rule, which emerged primarily as an inevitable outcome of a lost colonial war. However, the study will also examine the relative influence on events of other international developments and place them in the context of the wider historical picture of a new world order in the developing Cold War, the decline of Europe s colonial empires and the birth of the European Community and the United Nations as new political entities. Research will start with a thorough analysis of existing historical literature on the subject. The focus of research will be on historical archives, mainly Dutch and Indonesian, which may yield new approaches to this subject. Brand, Charlotte Opstappen of aanblijven? 8 Buuren, Jelle van Doelwit Den Haag Systeemhaat in Nederland Universiteit Leiden Promotor: Edwin Bakker en Beatrice de Graaf Het onderzoek richt zich op systeemhaat in Nederland, opgevat als de radicale weerzin en woede tegen het huidige Nederlandse politieke systeem en haar gezagsdragers, dat zich niet laat begrijpen vanuit bestaande ideologieën en organisatievormen. Het exploratief onderzoek focust op digitale ecologieën waarin complotconstructies floreren, vanuit de gedachte dat in dit empirische veld zowel bruikbare kennis kan worden gedestilleerd over nieuwe ideologische voedingsbronnen, als over nieuwe organisatievormen. Corduwener, Pepijn Het debat over democratie in naoorlogs Europa Universiteit Utrecht Promotor: Prof. Dr. I de Haan p.corduwener@uu.nl Mijn huidige onderzoeksinteresse gaat uit naar het debat over de grenzen van de democratie in West-Europa sinds de Tweede Wereldoorlog. In een internationaal vergelijkend perspectief waarin Frankrijk, Duitsland en Italië betrokken worden, analyseer ik het intellectuele en politieke debat over democratie en bespreek ik de vraag of er wel sprake was van een naoorlogse consensus over de betekenis en grenzen van 'de' democratie. Ik probeer hiermee het gangbare beeld van een diepgewortelde veronderstelde stabiliteit van het democratische systeem te nuanceren. Dalsager, Anders Political adolescents during Cold War and Détente University of Southern Denmark Promotor: Professor Giles Scott-Smith, University of Leiden, Prof. Kristine Kjaersgaard, University of Southern Denmark ada@sa.dk The aim of the dissertation is to clarify the Cold War's impact on the formation of political attitudes among politically engaged Danish youths during the period It will therefore be investigated how the largest youth sections of the Danish political parties the Young Social Democrats (DSU), the Liberal Youth (VU), the Young Conservatives (KU) and the Social Liberal Youth (RU) were affected by at a number of key events in international politics during the first Cold War and the Détente. Inspired by political science and theory on social movements it will specifically be analyzed how I) major political events and II) participation in national and international networks affected the interpretation schemes - called frames through which the youth organizations interpreted the global conflicts in the decades after World War II. 8

Een parlementaire geschiedenis van het socialezekerheidsstelsel, Centrum voor Parlementaire Geschiedenis (Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen) Promotor: Prof.dr. C.C. (Carla) van Baalen en mr.dr. J.C.F.J. (Johan) van Merriënboer In de periode kwamen met horten en stoten de eerste aanzetten tot sociale weten regelgeving tot stand ten aanzien van werklozen, zieken en ouderen. Na de Tweede Wereldoorlog werd het socialezekerheidsstelsel verder uitgebouwd met de Werkloosheidswet (1949), de Algemene Ouderdomswet (1956), de Algemene Kinderbijslagwet (1961), de Algemene Bijstandswet (1963) en de Wet op de Arbeidsongeschiktheidsverzekering (1966). De uitbreiding van het socialezekerheidsstelsel had een sterke toename van de kosten voor de overheid tot gevolg. Al tijdens het kabinet- Den Uyl ( ) werden de eerste voorstellen gedaan om de explosieve kosten en het misbruik van sociale voorzieningen tegen te gaan. Fundamentele hervormingen van sociale wet- en regelgeving bleven niettemin lange tijd uit. Pas in de jaren tachtig vonden de eerste belangrijke aanpassingen plaats en na het rapport van de parlementaire enquêtecommissie- Buurmeijer, dat eind 1993 verscheen, veranderde geleidelijk aan de organisatie en uitvoeringspraktijk van de sociale zekerheid. Dit project, dat wordt gefinancierd en mede begeleid door het Instituut Gak, richt zich op de politieke besluitvorming over de hervormingen in de sociale zekerheid in de afgelopen drie decennia. Op deze wijze zal de parlementaire geschiedenis van de sociale zekerheid vanaf de jaren tachtig in kaart worden gebracht. Derks, Sebastiaan Negotiating Dynasty. Politics and Diplomacy of the Farnese in Habsburg Europe, KNAW Huygens ING Promotor: Prof. Dr. H. van Nierop (UvA), Prof Dr. J. Duindam (UL) This dissertation provides an examination of the political practices of the Farnese in the face of fierce political competition from other rulers of small states in Northern Italy to maintain and extend their dynastic power in Habsburg Europe. What were their politics about, which patterns can be discerned in their political behaviour, and how did their politics develop in this Europe-wide game of dynastic politics? 9

10 Diem, Lisa van Discussing colonial hygiene: transnational networks and knowledge transfer related to colonial hygiene involving Dutch and Belgian actors between the 1880s and Universiteit Maastricht Promotor: Prof. dr. Kiran Klaus Patel (Maastricht University), dr. Nico Randeraad (Maastricht University) & prof. dr. Christophe Verbruggen (Ghent University) Colonial hygiene is a concept that refers to measures to improve public health in the colonies. This topic was discussed during the late nineteenth, early twentieth century, by groups of people with different national backgrounds that were connected to each other via memberships, publications, personal contact and participation in events and that had a shared understanding of this topic. My research analyses why Low Countries actors participated in these transnational networks and how they contributed to knowledge exchange and expertise. I hypothesize that this transnational exchange led to the formation of a specialised body of expertise and knowledge on colonial hygiene, to the consolidation of the legitimacy of colonial rule and to the confirmation of the actors status as experts, nationally and internationally. My project is a joint PhD between Maastricht University and Ghent University and belongs to the larger project TIC-Belgium ( This project operates from the assumption that welfare policies and legal regimes that came into being during the nineteenth century in Europe were deeply embedded in transnational networks and it focusses on the involvement of Low Countries actors these reform networks. I start out from the assumption that reform discussions were not confined to the situation in (Western) European nation states. Discussions on social reform also extended to the colonies, which were of central importance to European nations in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. This makes the colonial dimension key to assess the character and flow of transnational networks at that time Dieterman, Elisabeth Politieke legitimiteit in debat. Democratie en gezag in Nederland in de jaren 1880, 1930 en Universiteit Leiden Promotor: Prof.dr. H. te Velde, Dr. P. Nieuwenburg e.m.dieterman@hum.leidenuniv.nl Elisabeth Dieterman is sinds januari 2011 als promovendus verbonden aan het Instituut voor Geschiedenis van de Universiteit Leiden. Zij werkt aan een onderzoek dat draait om de betekenis van het omstreden 10

11 concept politieke legitimiteit. Aan de hand van (parlementaire) debatten over democratie en gezag uit de jaren 1880, 1930 en 1960 wordt geprobeerd verschillende concepties van legitimiteit te onderscheiden. Het bronnenmateriaal wordt geanalyseerd aan de hand van politiek-filosofische literatuur over politieke legitimiteit. De gedachte is dat het onderzoek niet alleen een beter beeld zal opleveren van de verschillende concepties van legitimiteit die in Nederland in het verleden een rol gespeeld hebben, maar ook zal bijdragen aan het hedendaagse debat over de betekenis van politieke legitimiteit. Gijsenbergh, Joris Gebreken der democratie.' Pogingen tot hervorming van de Nederlandse democratie, Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen Promotor: Prof. Dr. R.A.M. Aerts en Prof. Dr. M. Monteiro Het geijkte beeld in de wetenschappelijke literatuur is dat democratie in de jaren twintig en dertig onder druk stond. Dat beeld is echter te eenzijdig, omdat het over het hoofd ziet dat democratie' op verschillende manieren gedefinieerd werd door de historische actoren. Veel Nederlandse politici, publicisten en intellectuelen wilden de democratie niet afschaffen, maar radicaal hervormen. Dit project richt zich op die complexe omgang met democratie in Nederland tussen 1917 en 1950, waarbij ook oog is voor transnationale invloeden. Geheel in de lijn van het NWO-programma Omstreden Democratie, wil ik 'democratie' in zijn historische context plaatsen. Daarom probeer ik inzicht te krijgen in de ontwikkeling van de verschillende 'repertoires' van democratie, die bestonden uit uiteenlopende acties, symbolen en discursieve uitingen. Met andere woorden, mijn onderzoek richt zich op de verschillende alternatieve vormen van democratie die werden gepropageerd. Ik probeer de omgang met het concept democratie bloot te leggen aan de hand van publieke debatten over de uitsluiting van politieke extremisten en de grenzen van democratie die daarbij werden opgezocht. Deze omstreden kwesties maken namelijk duidelijk met welke democratische dilemma s de historische actoren worstelden. Mijn deelproject, getiteld Strong democracy (1920s-1950s), maakt deel uit van een interdisciplinair onderzoeksproject van de Faculteiten Letteren, Managementwetenschappen en Filosofie van de Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen. Dit onderzoeksproject, Repertoires of Democracy. The Transfer of Democratic Practices and Institutions in 20th-Century Europe, sluit op zijn beurt aan bij het NWO-Programma Omstreden Democratie. 11

Die Bundesrepublik Deutschland, die Niederlande und die Europäische Integration Universiteit van Amsterdam Promotor: My PhD-project focuses on the relations between Germany and the Netherlands during the formative phase of the European integration process. The research particularly concentrates on the interaction between th e actors that were able to influence the official national policies in both countries towards the European integration process. I n the first place, naturally, diplomats and members of the respective national governments come to mind in this respect. However, actors on the European level also started to influence national policies after the first supranational institutions were established in the 1950s. It is evident that interest groups, international preconditions, the parliamentary opposition, transnational networks of different kinds, societal developments and differences in political systems also had their influence on the European polic ies on both national and transnational level. Furthermore, the formulation of a national policy towards Europe can, particularly i n the case of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Netherlands, always be traced back to the shared (though evidently not similar) histor ies of war and occupation. Wolffram l.j.hansma@rug.nl In mijn onderzoek wil ik het orangistische politieke denken gedurende de laatste twee decennia van de achttiende eeuw in kaart brengen. De orangisten hadden geen eenduidige politieke theorie, maar door veel orangistische pamfletten en tijdschriften te lezen, wil ik erachter komen wat hun ideeën en idealen waren met betrekking tot o.a. bestuur, soevereiniteit, vrijheid en gelijkheid. 12

13 Hellendoorn, Elmar De geschiedenis van het Nederlandse nucleaire nonproliferatiebeleid Universiteit Utrecht Promotor: Prof. Dr. D. Hellema Het onderzoek richt zich op de verhouding tussen de Nederlandse benadering van de nucleaire non-proliferatieproblematiek in het Midden-Oosten en Pakistan en de dito benadering van de VS en Frankrijk tegen de achtergrond van strategische context van die regio (oa. geopolitiek en energieproblematiek) gedurende de jaren zeventig en tachtig. Er wordt uitgebreid gebruik gemaakt van bronnen in binnen- en buitenland, waarvan vele tot op heden gesloten zijn gebleven. Het onderzoek wordt financieel ondersteund door het ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken. Heumen, Lennaert van American concepts of federalism and democracy and early European integration, Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen Promotor: Prof. Dr. R.A.M. Aerts, Prof. Dr. H. Bak en Dr. H. Kaal European integration was not an isolated European process, but developed against the background of an intensive exchange of ideas on the structure and organization of a European federation of states. This project studies the different blueprints on European cooperation and integration that were present in the 1940s and 1950s. In particular, it explores the transfer of American ideas of federalism and democracy to the process of early European integration. To what extent was the United States a model for European integration and were the European ideas on integration influenced by American concepts on postwar European integration? The current debates on the democratic deficit of the European Union, have increased the academic interest in democracy within the European Union s institutions. The historiography on early European integration is still primarily approached from a diplomatic and realist perspective, in which the various nation-states and their interests were central. Studies on the American influence on postwar European cooperation have, therefore, hitherto been mainly centered on organizations as NATO and OEEC and have thus ignored the importance of non-state actors. Recent innovative historical research has clearly shown that early European integration cannot be fully explained without thorough study of non-state actors and in particular transnational and transatlantic networks. This proposal uses this approach of transatlantic networks to study the transfer of American ideas on European integration. 13

14 Heyer, Anne The Birth of Mass Political Parties Universiteit Leiden Promotor: Prof. Dr. H. te Velde This PhD project analyzes the emergence of the early political party in Europe at the end of the 19th century. The leading research question is: how and why did political parties emerge? More specifically, the project analyzes the motives, expectations and rationales of party leaders and members to found and join the new organizations. Discourses on organizational development and its connection to internal processes of institutionalization, professionalization and politicization are explored in three case studies: the German Social Democratic Party, the English Liberal Caucus in Birmingham and the Dutch Protestant Antirevolutionary Party. The research project is predominantly based on historical primary and secondary sources such as auto-biographies, biographies and political brochures and other publications composed by party leaders, their supporters and criticizers. Also reports from party congresses and newspaper articles provide information on how party members and criticizers perceived the phenomenon of political organization. Emphasis will be placed on the comments and evaluation of the party organization, internal processes of party foundation and the role of individual leaders by different groups. In addition, theoretical approaches to the foundation of political parties are taken into consideration to facilitate not only empirical, but also theoretical contributions of the dissertation. Hietland, Chris Biography of André van der Louw Rijksuniversiteit Groningen Promotor: Prof. dr. J.W. Renders, Prof. dr. G. Voerman André van der Louw ( ) had a versatile career. He was a journalist, a social democratic politician and a chairman of several public organizations. In the late sixties, Van der Louw became widely known as a leading member of Nieuw Links, a movement that strived for change within the social democratic party. He was chosen in the central committee of the PvdA in 1967, and became the party s chairman four years later. From a rebellious party member, he turned into a professional politician. Van der Louw was sworn into office as mayor of Rotterdam in In 1981 he became Minister of Culture, Recreation and Social Work in the second Van Agt government in After the rapid fall of this unsuccessful cabinet, Van der Louw appeared to be in the running to become Den Uyl s successor as PvdA leader. Instead, he disappeared 14

15 from the political scene in The Hague and became chairman of a number of public organizations. This biographical research aims to show the connection between Van der Louw s personal background and his public activities, and it will put it into a historical context. This will probably shed light on how Van der Louw s various activities related to one another and it will give insight in the development of his political views. Four research subjects are of central importance: Van der Louw s journalistic and cultural activities, his position within the PvdA, his political style and his (self)representation. This research will contribute to the historiography of postwar Dutch social democracy and political culture. Hans-Martien ten Napel (UL) w.l.vanthul@uva.nl Recent controversies in the Netherlands strongly suggest that the relationship between the religious landscape (i.e. faith-based organizations, religious individuals) and the state is being redefined and renegotiated. The Staatkundige Gereformeerde Partij (SGP) can no longer exclude women from passive suffrage, Jewish and Islamic communities nearly lost their prerogative in the Netherlands to engage in traditional ritual slaughter, and Dutch parliament only recently abolished the law on scornful blasphemy. These are but a few issues that illustrate the newly contested relationship between state (both national and local government as well as judicial bodies) and religion. This research offers a historical examination of the grounding for Dutch government policy toward faith-based organizations old and new, from all religions. It offers a longitudinal study of the Dutch public debate about how these organizations should be regulated by government policy. It seeks to uncover the sometimes subtle ways in which faith-based organizations were accommodated in the public square by governmental bodies, and how the claims of these groups were weighed in respect to other groups, and to the rights of individuals. In doing so the project re-examines some central claims of the secularization paradigm, particularly regarding processes of (de-)privatization of religion, and the role of political actors in (re)shaping the religious landscape. The project focuses on the Netherlands particularly, but does so by emphasizing its political-juridical interdependence vis-à-vis the larger European context. This, in sum, enables a more systematic understanding of the shifting frameworks of state-religion interlocution in contemporary western societies. Harinck Komende vier jaar houd ik mij bezig met een biografische studie naar de antirevolutionaire politicus en gouverneurgeneraal A.W.F. Idenburg ( ). Binnen de politieke geschiedschrijving over het begin van de twintigste eeuw is van alles geschreven, maar zeer weinig over Idenburg. Dit terwijl Idenburg als een van de weinige Nederlandse politici en bestuurders een bepalende stempel kon drukken op het Nederlandse koloniale beleid. Drie keer als minister van Koloniën, als gouverneur van Suriname en als gouverneur-generaal van Nederlands Oost-Indië. Binnen mijn biografische studie wil ik vooral kijken naar de betekenis van Idenburg als koloniaal bestuurder. Hierbij heb ik aandacht voor de opkomst van de islam in Nederlands-Indië (waarbij islamoloog C. Snouck Hurgronje ook de revue zal passeren). Romijn Dit project onderzoekt de politieke stijl van massabewegingen tussen circa 1918 en 1940: publieke manifestaties, demonstraties, massabijeenkomsten, collectivisme, leiderschapscultus, symbolen, taalgebruik, etc. De bedoeling ervan is zicht te krijgen op de dominante stijl van politiek of politieke mobilisatie in dit tijdvak van emancipatie en democratisering. Deze politieke stijl en de dominantie ervan worden onderzocht aan de hand van twaalf massabewegingen, de organisatievorm die de politiek in het interbellum karakteriseerde. Koekkoek, René The Transformation of Citizenship Conceptions during the Revolutionary and Post-Revolutionary Era in France, The Netherlands, and the United States, Universiteit Utrecht Promotor: Prof. Dr. Ido de Haan While it is generally acknowledged that the political revolutions of the late eighteenth century in France, The Netherlands, and the United States radically changed the meaning of citizenship, we do not adequately understand how and why this happened, and moreover, what the legacy is of what has been called the age f the democratic revolution. After the Napoleonic era, after all, both France and The Netherlands turned from republics into (constitutional) monarchies. Within a relatively short period of time radical democraticrepublican conceptions of citizenship that emerged during revolutionary times were superseded by post-revolutionary, more moderate and liberal depoliticized conceptions of citizenship. This research project aims to investigate this transnational transformation of the meaning of citizenship in the period , its origins, and the contexts in which it took place. Existing studies have focused either on the revolutionary era itself, discussed citizenship from conceptual-linguistic or socioeconomic perspectives, or studied citizenship in a limited national context. This research project suggests that (1) it is precisely the transition from revolutionary to post-revolutionary conceptions of citizenship that is a crucial, but largely unexplored chapter in the historical development of modern citizenship; that (2) in order to unravel this complex issue a comprehensive approach is required that connects long-term structural (institutional) and intellectual developments with the political 18

19 dynamic of the revolutionary and post-revolutionary period; and that (3) a transnational perspective is needed to explain how transnational intellectual exchange and interaction between revolutionaries have shaped this transition. Nijenhuis l.b.lauret@hum.leidenuniv.nl Between 1780 and 1848 the Dutch Republic transformed into the United Kingdom of the Netherlands. The project studies elements of continuity in the meeting culture of the States General during this revolutionary period in Dutch history. Traditionally, this topic has been studied as a typical element of the long 19 th century. Despite the many constitutional changes witnessed by the Dutch provinces over the course of this period, the practice of meeting at a national level in The Hague, be it in the States General or its revolutionary replacements, continued. The interesting field of historical tensions between constitutional changes and continuity in the political practice of historical actors stands at the project s center of attention. In researching this topic and period from the perspective of the early modern world of the political, looking for elements of continuity rather than revolutionary change, this study transgresses a traditional border in existing historiography. To view these early modern elements as continuations of the early modern institutional political culture rather than as mere signs of momentarily relapses to archaic habits or as slips otherwise correct procedure, makes for an improved understanding of this world of the political and for an innovative addition to the long history of the States General. 20 Veelal wordt de Eerste Wereldoorlog voorgesteld als een katalysator van democratiserende processen. Voor de offers die zij hadden gebracht voor de staat, hoopten bevolkingen in en buiten Europa immers beloond te worden met een toegenomen politieke zeggenschap in die staat. Terwijl tot op heden uitvoerig is onderzocht hoe deze claim is verwoord door georganiseerde bewegingen en politieke elites, wil dit project onderzoeken of en hoe zij tot uitdrukking werd gebracht door gewone, niet-georganiseerde burgers. Concreet wordt, op basis van de bewaarde correspondenties, een grootschalig onderzoek verricht naar de interacties tussen gewone burgers en Volksvertegenwoordigers in België en Frankrijk tussen 1910 en Daarin wordt niet alleen nagegaan of de gewone burgers expliciet democratiserende verzoeken tot de Volksvertegenwoordigers richtten, maar ook of hun taal zelf democratiseerde. Wielenga The core aim of my doctoral research is to write an international comparative history about local public spheres in a border region during the First World War. Public spheres are central spheres of social life. If we want to understand the various changes and its consequences for everyday life, it is absolutely necessary to examine the transformation of the public spheres during wartime. In order to attain significant results, this project deals with three case studies, whose locations are unique in the world. Nowhere else than in todays Meuse-Rhine Euroregion can be found a border triangle in the former composition of a Central Power (German Empire), an Ally of an Entente Power under occupation (Belgium) and a neutral country (the Netherlands). In concrete terms, the areas under investigation are Eupen (which belonged to Prussia/the German Empire until 1920 and today is the capital of the Germanspeaking community in Belgium), Tongeren (Belgian province of Limburg) and Roermond (Dutch province of Limburg). Inspired by the two volumes of Jay Winter s studies about capital cities in wartime, we can regard a town as the meeting point between the imagined community of the nation and the experienced community of the neighbourhood.
