2 AS IS AS WAS AS WAS AS IS Het wordt echt heel mooi, romantisch, lyrisch en esthetisch. Ik ben niet meer bang voor esthetiek. G e r va n E l k Op het moment dat ik deze inleiding schrijf, legt Ger van Elk de laatste hand aan zijn jongste werk: As is as was - As was as is. De titel van dit werk had hij al een jaar geleden bedacht. De rijping van het idee is een tijdrovend proces voor een kunstenaar als Van Elk. En nu het zijn voltooiing nadert, krijgt het conceptuele idee zijn definitieve vorm. Al vanaf het begin stond vast dat hij foto-opnamen wilde maken op twee locaties, die daarna zullen dienen als expositieruimtes voor het resultaat. De eerste fotosessie had plaats in de achterzaal van Borzo aan de Keizersgracht; de tweede enkele maanden later bij Galerie Grimm in de Frans Halsstraat. As is as was - As was as is, als zo vaak in het werk van Ger van Elk, gaat over afscheid, over komen en gaan, over in beeld komen en er weer uit verdwijnen. Op beide locaties liet Van Elk vrouwelijke modellen bewegen tussen een centraal punt in de ruimte en een kunstwerk op elke muur. In beeld komen en weer verdwijnen, van helder en scherp naar diffuus en vervagend, het gezicht toegewend dan weer afgewend. Het wordt heel erg mooi, liefdevol, zegt hij, als je op een ander niveau kijkt zijn het net portretjes. As is as was - As was as is herbergt een heel kunstenaarsleven, zijn relatie met vrouwen en het weer afscheid (moeten) nemen... Afscheid nemen, het is een rode draad door het oeuvre van Ger van Elk. Misschien is het wel mijn laatste werk, zegt hij met een mengeling aan gevoelens die, zoals altijd, heen en weer slingeren tussen verwondering en zwaarmoedigheid, tussen humor en nostalgie. Mijn voorlaatste serie schilderijen heten Conclusions. Aan tafel bij ons vertel ik hem hoezeer ik houd van het late werk van grote kunstenaars, dus ook dat van hem. Het late werk van Mondriaan, van Matisse, Willem De Kooning zelfs en de ultieme, bijna zwarte doeken van Rothko. En dichter bij huis, de laatste, verstilde reliëfs van Jan Schoonhoven. Ook in de muziek zijn de mooiste composities ontstaan in het late oeuvre van Beethoven, Mahler en Richard Strauss. Niet meer de jongste experimenten verrassen, de Sturm und Drang, de onbevangenheid, de provocatie wellicht. In het late oeuvre van al deze kunstenaars stapelen zich deze eigenschappen op en resulteren ze in rust, uitgewogen balans en volmaakte zekerheid. Deze kwalificaties gelden nadrukkelijk ook voor Ger van Elk en zijn late werk. Amsterdam, juli 2012 Paul van Rosmalen

G e r va n E l k At the time I write this introduction, Ger van Elk is putting the final touches to his latest work: As is as was - As was as is. He already had the title for this work in mind a year ago. Bringing the idea to fruition is a time-consuming process for an artist like Van Elk. And now, as its completion draws near, the conceptual idea acquires its final form. Right from the start he was certain that he wanted to take photographs at two locations, which would later serve as exhibition space for the result. The first photo session took place in the Borzo back room on the Keizersgracht; the second a few months later at Galerie Grimm in the Frans Halsstraat. As is as was - As was as is, as so often in Ger van Elk s work, is about saying good-bye, about arrival and departure, about coming into the picture and then vanishing from it. At both locations Van Elk had female models move between a central point in the space and a work of art on each wall. Appearing and then disappearing, from clear and in-focus to diffuse and blurred, facing you and then facing away. It s going to be very beautiful, loving, he says, when you view it at another level they are just like portraits. As is as was - As was as is encompasses the whole life of an artist, his relationship with women and then (unwillingly) saying good-bye... Saying good-bye is a theme throughout Ger van Elk s oeuvre. Perhaps this will be my last work, he says with mixed feelings that, as always, swing back and forth between amazement and melancholy, between humour and nostalgia. My last but one series of paintings was called Conclusions. Over dinner with us I tell him how much I love the late work of great artists and that this includes his own. The late work of Mondrian, of Matisse, even Willem De Kooning and the final, almost black canvases by Rothko. And closer to home, the last, tranquil reliefs by Jan Schoonhoven. In music, too, the finest compositions are created in the late works of Beethoven, Mahler and Richard Strauss. No longer taking one by surprise with the latest experiments, the Sturm und Drang, the lack of inhibition, the provocation, perhaps. In all these artists late works the accumulation of these qualities results in serenity, well-considered balance and consummate certainty. 5 De tentoonstelling As is as was - As was as is bij Borzo wordt gecompleteerd met een serie vroegere werken van Ger van Elk. In enkele van deze, vaak nog niet eerder geëxposeerde werken, staat een ander, kenmerkend thema van de kunstenaar centraal: de Horizon. At Borzo the exhibition As is as was - As was as is will also comprise a series of earlier works by Ger van Elk. A number of these frequently never before exhibited works feature one of the artist s other, characteristic themes: the Horizon.
