Deze tweede uitgave van Imagine brengt het in beeld. Met interviews, reportages, met facts & figures. We blijven onze alumni volgen en informeren, simpelweg omdat afgestudeerden vanuit welke hoek dan ook een bijdrage blijven leveren aan het zijn van NHTV. Dat zijn is geen constante, we blijven in beweging. De nieuwe strategie is bepaald, waarin wordt voortgebouwd op de speerpunten internationalisering en excellentie. Er is definitief gekozen voor de verdere academische ontwikkeling van NHTV. Er zijn al essentiële stappen gezet, zoals de succesvolle accreditatie van de wo-bacheloropleiding Vrijetijdwetenschappen. Nieuwe masters zijn in ontwikkeling, nieuwe lectoren zijn aangesteld en tal van medewerkers zijn gepromoveerd of werken aan een proefschrift. Over al deze academische ontwikkelingen leest u in dit magazine. En er is meer gebeurd sinds het verschijnen van het eerste nummer. NHTV heeft zich in 2008 mogen verheugen in twee koninklijke bezoeken. Hare Hoogheid Prinses Laurentien bracht een bezoek in het kader van de campagne Tijdgebrek, waarmee het belang van aandacht voor studeren met een functiebeperking nog eens extra is onderstreept. In december opende Hare Majesteit Koningin Beatrix het vernieuwde gebouw van de Academy of Hotel and Facility Management aan de Sibeliuslaan in Breda. Een locatie waar velen van u hebben gestudeerd, en die wellicht onherkenbaar is geworden. 100% NHTV! Travel Inventive: Als organisatie willen we sprankelen. That is why we opt for an NHTV graduate How are our graduates doing? This second edition of Imagine, NHTV s Alumni Magazine, will tell you. By means of interviews, articles, facts & figures. We like to keep track of our alumni and provide them with information, simply because our graduates from whatever perspective continue to contribute to the being of NHTV. This being is not a constant, as we are always in a state of flux. For the next four years, a new strategy has been determined. This new strategy builds on the priority areas of internationalisation and excellence and sets out the further academic development of NHTV. Essential steps have already been taken, such as the successful accreditation of the academic Bachelor programme in Leisure Sciences. New Master programmes are currently being developed, new associate professors have been appointed, and countless employees have obtained their doctoral degrees or are working on their dissertations. You can read more about all these academic achievements in this magazine. And more has happened since the first edition of Imagine. In 2008, NHTV was delighted to receive two royal visits. In November, Princess Laurentien visited NHTV within the framework of the Lack of Time campaign, the aim of which was to underline the importance of attention for students with a disability. In December, Queen Beatrix opened the renewed building of the Academy of Hotel and Facility Management at Sibeliuslaan in Breda. Het vakgebied ontwikkelt zich dan ook razendsnel en als je de beste opleiding op het gebied van vrije tijd wilt blijven, is een cultuuromslag noodzakelijk. Je moet blijven voortborduren op wat je bent en jezelf continu verbeteren. De organisatie is binnen bepaalde grenzen wel een stuk zakelijker geworden, maar met meer verschillende mensen ook een completer instituut. Vooral het eigen gebouw van de Academy for Leisure aan de Archimedesstraat in Breda werkt mee aan die eigen identiteit. Ik ervaar de leisurestudenten als prettige studenten, ze zijn wel enigszins veranderd door de jaren heen, het is allemaal iets meer mainstream geworden. Maar toch blijf je de leisurestudent nog steeds duidelijk herkennen binnen NHTV. NHTV is still a young and dynamic organisation, where a lot is possible. Although they ve changed over the years, it has all become a bit more mainstream. But the leisure student is still clearly recognisable within NHTV. Ze is manager van een aantal Nederlandse sterren zoals Nikki en Nathalie, de nummer 1 en 2 van Idols Hoe ziet zo n baan er nou uit? Kijk mee in de overvolle agenda van Annejet. Annejet graduated in 2008 from International Media and Entertainment Management. After her graduation she got a job straight away with Jan Vis Agency (Dutch entertainment agency). She manages a number of Dutch celebrities, such as Nikki and Nathalie, the numbers 1 and 2 of the Dutch Pop Idol contest in What s involved in a job like this? Take a peek in the overfull diary of Annejet. Annejet van Elderen De Efteling is altijd mijn doel geweest. Het is altijd een constante en inspirerende factor in mijn leven geweest. Ik had vroeger een abonnement en ging zo vaak mogelijk. De verwondering werd waardering en uiteindelijk erkenning voor wat de Efteling doet. Ik raakte gefascineerd door de kracht van de Efteling, welke betekenis het heeft in het leven van mensen. Ik ging er vakantiewerk doen en kwam tot de conclusie dat ik van mijn passie mijn werk wilde maken. Daarom ging ik Vrijetijds - management studeren. Ik word ooit directeur van de Efteling durfde ik hardop te zeggen en ik heb mijn hele traject daar op afgestemd. Ik heb in m n derde jaar heel bewust gekozen voor een stage bij Reinoud van Assendelft de Coningh, lector aan NHTV en oud-directeur van de Efteling. Hij heeft een adviesbureau op het gebied van leisure en cultuur. Ik heb voor mijn afstuderen een Business Transformation Plan geschreven. Hoe groeien we door strategische innovatie uit van een attractiepark naar een breed georiënteerd media- en entertainmentbedrijf? Hoe maken we sprookjes actueel en relevant zonder onze identiteit te verloochenen. Dat is de uitdaging. In mijn huidige functie bij de Efteling houd ik me bezig met imagineering en strategische merkontwikkeling. Wij zijn bezig met nieuwe producties. Misschien dat we in de toekomst een eigen digitale tv-zender gaan neerzetten, dat ligt tegenwoordig allemaal binnen de mogelijkheden. Waar ik naar kijk is, past het binnen het kader van de Efteling, maar ik onderzoek ook hoe we het kader kunnen vergroten. Hoe blijven we ons vernieuwen met behoud van de historische essentie en zonder identiteitsverloochening. NHTV heeft mij een omgeving geboden waarin ik mijn droom kon realiseren. Ik heb optimaal gebruikgemaakt van wat mij werd geboden aan coaching en ondersteuning. Ik heb verder gekeken dan alleen het aangeboden programma, ik heb m n eigen kansen gecreëerd. Je kunt je eigen verhaal maken! The Efteling has always been my goal. Ever since I was a child, it has been a constant and inspirational factor in my life. I used to have season tickets and went there as often as possible. At some point in time, the wonder changed into appreciation and recognition for what the Efteling does. I became fascinated by the power of the Efteling, the meaning it has in people s lives. I did holiday jobs there and soon came to the conclusion that I really wanted to make my passion my work. That is why I decided to study Leisure Management. Once I will be the director of the Efteling was something I dared to say out loud and something to which I directed my entire course of studies. In my third year I opted for a work placement with Reinoud van Assendelft de Coningh. He is an associate professor at NHTV and former director of the Efteling. He has his own consultancy firm in the field of leisure and culture. My graduation project was to write a Business Transformation Plan for the Efteling. This entailed: how can we grow, by means of strategic innovation, from an attraction park into a broadly based media and entertainment business? Several initiatives to this end have already been developed, such as the Sprookjesboom, a children s television programme on the Z@ppelin channel. This is also where our first challenge lies, how do we make fairy tales contemporary and relevant without renouncing our identity. The Efteling does not sell entrance tickets, but memories and emotions and that is what makes the Efteling so magnificent! I am still working with the Efteling at present. My current job mainly involves imagineering and strategic brand development. We are working on new produc - tions. Perhaps we are going to launch our own digital television channel in the future, this is well within the range of possibilities nowadays. What I consider, is: does it fit into the scope of the Efteling, but also: how can we broaden this scope. How do we keep innovating, while maintaining the historical essence and without renouncing our identity. NHTV offered me an environment in which I was able to realise my dream. I made optimal use of the available coaching and support services. I looked beyond school, I created my own opportunities. You can write your own story! Nathalie's video is going to be recorded tomorrow; today clothes are tried on and selected. Een keer in de twee weken bespreek ik met de artiest hoe het gaat, wat er op de planning staat en hoe het met de shows gaat. Als manager ben je er namelijk niet elke show bij. It is important to coordinate the performance schedule with your artist once every two weeks and talk about how the concerts/performances are going. After all, as a manager, you won t attend every single one of them. Binnenkort wordt de nieuwe single van Nikki gereleased. Hiervoor moet ook een video worden opgenomen. Er hebben verschillende bedrijven gepitched en ik neem met Nikki door welke pitches ze leuk vindt en welke niet. Dit bespreek ik daarna met de platenmaatschappij. Nikki s new single will be released soon. And of course, a music video will be recorded too. Several companies have pitched for the project and I go over them with Nikki to see which ones she likes, and discuss the results with the record company afterwards. I go over the details with a colleague. Ik ga even kijken bij het promo optreden van Nikki in Mediamarkt. I drop in at Nikki s in-store performance at Mediamarkt. 5 Hotshot in the Picture Mies van Grunsven Een hotshot kun je hem zeker wel noemen. Op zijn 25ste al senior, een topcarrière bij Adidas, maar hij zegt zelf dat hij ook veel geluk heeft gehad Ik kan niet leren. Ik heb een extreem lage denkdiscipline. Ik moet iets dus écht leuk vinden, wil ik er iets mee kunnen. En logistiek vind ik leuk! Ik behoorde tot de laatste lichting van de VAT in Tilburg. Ik heb goede herinneringen aan NHTV. Mijn vrienden en ik waren continu aan het stangen en aan het rellen. Leo Kemps was de beste leraar. Met Leo kon je lachen. Geluk Ik heb in mijn loopbaan veel geluk gehad. Ik begon bij Jongeneel met de perfecte baan voor een schoolverlater. Onder Luc Beijer (huidige financieel directeur van de RAI) had ik veel vrijheid. Beijer coachte op een hele positieve manier. Mijn taakomschrijving: In jaar 1 moet je jezelf terugverdienen, in jaar 2 moet je geld verdienen voor het bedrijf. Via hem ben ik ook daarna bij HEMA aan de slag gegaan waar Beijer toen finan - cieel directeur was. Was ik gewoon al senior als snotneus van 25. Geld Geld is natuurlijk heel leuk en ook best belangrijk, maar is lang niet alles. Na twee jaar HEMA tekende ik bij ALIS een contract voor een salaris van 25% minder! Dat moest standaard iedere nieuwe werknemer bij ALIS. In ruil daarvoor kreeg je allerlei psychologische tests en mocht je bij ALIS werken aan je sterke kanten en ook je zwakkere punten ontdekken. Heel erg waardevol en daardoor een geweldige werkgever. Spelen Blijven spelen, dat is mijn motto. Je moet plezier blijven hebben in wat je doet. Spelen heb ik geleerd bij Bruna. Hier moest ik hun magazijn - dat een enorme puinhoop was - op de rails krij- gen. Een heerlijke klus, want het liep voor geen meter dus het kon alleen maar beter. Het magazijnteam bestond uit 50 man, precies een goede grootte. In een half jaar tijd had ik al mijn targets gehaald. Een heel leuke en leerzame tijd. Ik ben in 2006 ook gestopt bij Adidas, omdat ik het gevoel had dat ik daar niet meer kon spelen. Financieel moest ik een stap terugzetten, maar dat vind ik niet het belangrijkste. (Over) de top Bij Adidas heb ik negen banen in zeven jaar gedaan. Ik kwam er binnen via een ex-collega van ALIS. Hij vroeg of ik een keer in mijn vrije tijd naar het magazijn in Moerdijk wilde komen kijken, omdat hij dacht dat dat niet goed liep. Ik beloofde eens 2 dagen mee te gaan lopen, dat zijn uiteindelijk zeven jaar geworden. Ik begon als chef van dat magazijn in Moerdijk. In een jaar zorgde ik dat we van 300 man naar 90 man teruggingen. Het roer ging helemaal om. Uiteindelijk mocht ik deelnemen aan het Campus - project voor leidingschap van Adidas. Een hele eer want hier werden slechts 15 man voor uitgenodigd. Ik was de enige uit logistiek. Dit project was echt over de top. Alles kon, the sky was the limit. Geld geen issue. Helicopters werden ingezet om ons op een berg af te zetten. De hele technische staf van Bayern München werd ingevlogen om ons een sessie over presteren onder druk te geven. Geweldig. Ik werd uiteindelijk de nummer 1 van de club. Daar ben ik wel trots op. Hierna kreeg ik een directiefunctie in Italië. Een geweldige ervaring om in het buitenland te mogen werken. Auto s Auto s zijn mijn passie. Als hobby rijd en bouw ik race kit cars. Ik heb in 2006 dan ook een sabbatical genomen om me op deze hobby te kunnen storten. Inmiddels ben ik gestart met een Top Gear Westfield Cup ( Hier racen 50 auto s in mee. Ik race zelf ook. Het is geen dure hobby meer, want ik heb het voor elkaar dat ik kiet kan draaien en ik denk dat ik er snel ook winst mee kan maken. Droom Ik wil graag met mijn vriendin (bijna vrouw) weer in Italië gaan wonen. Daar komt zij ook vandaan. Italië is een heerlijk land. Verder ben ik bezig met het opzetten van een nieuwe luchtvaartmaatschappij. Dat is gaan kriebelen toen ik bij Eindhoven Airport werkte. Ik denk dat ik weet op welke manier mensen graag willen vliegen en dat kan ik ze bieden tegen een schappelijke prijs. Het zal geen prijsvechter worden zoals Ryanair, maar een maatschappij waar eenvoudige luxe hoog in het vaandel staat. Vaste prijzen voor een vlucht en dan acht vluchten op een dag naar dezelfde bestemming. En het belangrijkste is dat je maar een kwartier van tevoren aanwezig hoeft te zijn. Twee uur van tevoren is echt onzin! I was part of the last group of students of VAT in Tilburg. I have good memories of NHTV. My friends and I were constantly playing pranks and stirring up trouble. Leo Kemps was the best teacher. With Leo, you could have a laugh. Lucky I have been very lucky in my career. I started with Jongeneel in the perfect job for a recent graduate. Under Luc Beijer (who is currently director of RAI) I had a great deal of freedom. Beijer coached me in a very constructive manner. One of the things he said to me was, In year 1 you have to earn yourself back, in year 2 you start making the company money. It was via him that I found my next job with HEMA, where Beijer was financial director at that time. So, despite being a 25-year old rookie, I already held a senior position. Money Of course, it s nice to earn good money, and also rather important, but it isn t everything. After two years with HEMA, I signed a contract with ALIS, which set me back 25% in salary! This was standard procedure for every new ALIS employee. In exchange, you were given the opportunity to take all sorts of psychological tests and were allowed to develop your strengths and discover your weaknesses. A very valuable time for a great employer. Keep playing Keep playing, that is my motto. You must always enjoy what you do. Playing is what I learned in my job with Bruna. I had to get their warehouse which was in a complete shambles back on track again. A fantastic job, because things were so bad that they could only get better. The warehouse team consisted of 50 people, just a right size. Within six months time, I achieved all my targets. A fun and instructive time. I quit my job with Adidas in 2006, because I felt I had no more room to play there. I had to take a step back financially, but that was not the most important thing to me. Adidas With Adidas I fulfilled nine jobs in seven years. I entered the company via an ex-colleague of ALIS. He asked me to come and check out their warehouse in Moerdijk, because he thought it didn t run well. I promised to see what went on there for a couple of days, but stayed there for seven years. I started as manager of the warehouse in Moerdijk. In one year, I downsized the workforce from 300 to 90. We made a U-turn. In the end, I was invited to take part in Adidas campus project for leadership. Only the best 15% of 5,000 employees were allowed to participate in this project. I was the only one from logistics. This project was over the top. Everything was possible, the sky was the limit. Money was not an issue. Helicopters were used to drop us on a mountain. The entire technical staff of Bayern München was flown in to talk to us about performing under pressure. Fantastic. Ultimately, I made it to number one of this group. This is something I am rather proud of. After this, I was offered a management position in Italy. A terrific experience, to be given the opportunity of working abroad. Cars Cars are my passion. My hobby is building and driving kit cars. As a matter of fact, I took a sabbatical in 2006 to throw myself into this hobby. Meanwhile, I started a Top Gear Westfield Cup ( Some 50 race-drivers take part in this race, including me. It is no longer an expensive hobby, because I managed to achieve a break-even result, and I think there will even be some profit in it soon. Dream I would like to live in Italy again, with my girl-friend (wife to be). She is from Italy. Italy is a wonderful country. In addition, I am in the process of setting up a new airline company. This idea has been simmering in my head ever since I worked at Eindhoven Airport. I think that I know how people would like to fly and I can offer what they want at a reasonable price. It will not be a price fighter, like Ryanair, but a company that attaches great importance to simple luxury. Fixed prices for a flight and then eight flights a day to the same destination. And the most important thing would be that you can check in only fifteen minutes before your flight leaves. Two hours in advance is absolute nonsense! Met het instellen van deze prijs geeft Reiswerk Opleidingen, het opleidingsfonds van de reisbranche, een impuls aan de verbreding en verdieping over de kennis van de reiswereld. Winnaar 2008: Kim van Loon van de Academie voor toerisme De Ed. De Groodprijs wordt toegekend aan de schrijver van de beste scriptie binnen de Academie voor stedenbouw, logistiek en mobiliteit. Criteria zijn innoverend karakter, originaliteit, diepgang, presentatie en waarde voor het beroepsveld en onderwijs. De prijs is vernoemd naar Ed. de Grood, oud-wethouder van onderwijs van de gemeente Tilburg, oud-voorzitter van de Stichting Verkeersonderwijs en bestuurslid van de SIROV. Winnaar 2008: Diewertje Dekker van de Academie voor stedenbouw, logistiek en mobiliteit. Het John van der Puil stipendium is een prijs die wordt uitgereikt aan degene die de beste scriptie op hbo-niveau over inkoop heeft gerealiseerd, beschikbaar gesteld door Nevi (Nederlandse vereniging van inkoop). Winnaar 2007: Jos Nellen, Academie voor stedenbouw, logistiek en mobiliteit. De Verkeerskundeprijs 2008 is uitgereikt tijdens het congres Verkeerstechnische Leergang 2008, georganiseeerd door het vakblad Verkeerskunde en de ANWB. Winnaar: Jos Hollestelle, Academie voor stedenbouw, logistiek en mobiliteit. De InBev/ISPC Hospitality Award wordt uitgereikt aan de student die zich volgens de vakkundige jury het meest ontwikkeld heeft tijdens de studie en bovendien in zijn of haar afstudeertraject toonaangevend is geweest op het gebied van hospitality. Winnaar 2008: Sebastian Zimmermann, Academy of Hotel Management. Sebastian won ook de Academy of Hotel Management Research Award Voor hun inzet in studentenvereniging Xenia hebben Hannelore van den Bosch, Winanda van der Steen en Susanne Bisschops, Academy of Hotel Management, de Allegro Award 2008 gewonnen. Deze prijs wordt jaarlijks uitgereikt door INCH (International Network Connecting Hospitality). De Jones Lang LaSalle - Amphia Facility Award wordt uitgereikt aan de student die zich volgens de vakkundige jury het meest ontwikkeld heeft tijdens de studie en bovendien in zijn of haar afstudeertraject toonaangevend is geweest op het gebied van facility management. Winnaar 2008: Frans van Eersel, Academy of Facility Management. De Facility Management Onderzoeksprijs is in 2008 gewonnen door Marcel Broumans, Academy of Facility Management. 7

6 NHTV accelereert! Academic Bachelor programmes accelerates! De speerpunten uit het strategisch plan van NHTV: academisering, internationalisering en excellentie. The priority areas from NHTV s strategic plan: academic development, internationalisation and excellence. Academisering is een van de strategische speerpunten van NHTV. Academisering voegt een nieuwe dimensie toe aan onderwijs en kennisontwikkeling. Kennisontwikke ling schuift op naar een abstracter niveau. Er komt meer nadruk te liggen op het stimuleren van onderzoek en naast hoger beroepsonderwijs wordt in de toekomst ook wetenschappelijk onderwijs aangeboden. Zowel bachelors als masters. Wetenschappelijke bachelors Vanaf september 2009 biedt NHTV de wo-bacheloropleiding Vrijetijdwetenschappen aan. Er loopt ook een accreditatieaanvraag voor een wo-bachelor Toerisme, in samenwerking met Wageningen Universiteit. Masters NHTV biedt op dit moment drie masters aan, Imagineering, Tourism Destination Management en European Tourism Management. Er zijn twee masters in voorbereiding: een master International Real Estate and Facility Professional (in samenwerking met Hochschule Kufstein, Austria) en een master Media Innovation. NHTV wil ook wetenschappelijke masters aanbieden. Er wordt op dit moment een master voorbereid op het gebied van toerisme in samenwerking met Bournemouth University (UK). Samen met de Open Universiteit wordt bekeken of er een gemeenschappelijke master - opleiding op het gebied van cultureel erfgoed ontwikkeld kan worden. Academisch klimaat Onderzoek binnen en buiten NHTV wordt gestimuleerd. De diverse lectoraten van NHTV werken aan concrete onderzoeksprogramma s die toepassingsgericht zijn en inspelen op vraagstukken die relevant zijn voor het beroepenveld, maar die ook leiden tot wetenschappelijke publicaties en bijdragen aan wetenschappelijke congressen. Mede - werkers van NHTV worden aangemoedigd een master degree te halen of te promoveren. Academic development is one of NHTV s strategic priority areas. Academic development adds a new dimension to professional education and the development of knowledge. Academic education, and the development of knowledge through research, demands a higher degree of abstraction. Greater emphasis will be placed on the stimulation of research and, in addition to education at higher professional level, education at academic level will be offered in the future. Bachelor as well as Master programmes. As from September 2009 the academic Bachelor programme in Leisure Sciences will be offered by NHTV. An accreditation procedure for an academic Bachelor programme in Tourism, in conjunction with Wageningen University, is currently being conducted. Master programme At present, NHTV boasts three Master programmes, one in Imagineering, one in Tourism Destination Management, and a European Tourism Management Master programme. The plans for setting up a Master programme in International Real Estate and Facility Professional (in conjunction with Hochschule Kufstein, Austria) are at an advanced stage, and there are also concrete plans for a Master in Media Innovation. NHTV also wants to offer academic Master programmes. At the moment, a Master programme in the field of tourism is being prepared together with Bournemouth University (UK). Theo Hutten: Het is niet eenvoudig om commerciële doelen en idealen te combineren. Je moet naar waarden en betekenis geving kijken. Dan kunnen succes en passie samengaan. In een organisatie, in de ontwikkeling van een gebied of in geval van een evenement werken mensen gezamenlijk aan een doel. Maar heeft iedereen werkelijk hetzelfde plan voor ogen? Zeker als er meerdere partijen betrokken zijn, is samenwerking een complex proces. Het lectoraat onderzoekt nieuwe businessmodellen waarin deze complexe netwerken succesvol kunnen samenwerken. In a business or institution, in the development of a region, or in the organisation of an event, people work together towards a common goal. But does everyone really have the same plan in mind? Especially when several parties are involved, cooperation is a complex process. The associate professorship studies new business models which are supposed to facilitate successful cooperation between these complex networks. Associate professor dr. Theo Hutten: It is not easy to combine commercial goals with ideals. You have to look at values and meaning. Only then can success and passion blend together. Travel Industry Management Lector Susanne Stolte: Het is typerend voor de professional in de reisindustrie dat hij tegelijkertijd strategisch moet kunnen denken en operationeel sterk moet zijn. De sociaaleconomische en sociaal-culturele ontwikkelingen in de samenleving maken het ook voor de reisbranche noodzakelijk zich continu te blijven ontwikkelen. Het lectoraat is een vooruitstrevende partner voor de reisindustrie in haar volle breedte. Socio-economic and socio-cultural developments in society require the travel industry s continued re-evaluation and adjustment. Om hen te bereiken en te motiveren zijn games geweldige instrumenten. Dit is waar het gebied van serious games een onschatbaar hulpmiddel wordt. Daarnaast kun je virtuele omgevingen creëren die normaal onbereikbaar zijn, zoals simulaties voor het leger, de luchtvaart of de ruimtevaart. Serious games zijn computerspellen die niet worden gebruikt voor entertainment. Het lectoraat volgt alle ontwikkelingen over serious games op de voet en stelt als doel de kloof te vernauwen tussen opleidingsniveau en werkveld. Serious games are designed for learning rather than entertainment. The associate professorship closely follows developments in the field of serious games and one of its aims is to narrow the gap between the level of education and industry needs. Associate professor dr. Penny de Byl: Young people today are digital natives. To reach and motivate them, games are marvellous instruments. This is where serious games become an invaluable tool. In addition, you can create virtual environments that would otherwise be unaccessible, such as simulations for the army, for aviation or for space travel. Door theorie en praktijk één basis te geven, wordt wetenschap direct relevant voor praktijk en andersom. Hans Bouwknegt Hans Bouwknegt, associate professor in Digital Media Concepts at the Academy for Digital Entertainment, started with his research at the University of Bayreuth at the end of 2004, with Prof. Dr. J. Wessel J. Pienaar, hoogleraar aan het Departement Logistiek. Na ruim 30 jaren werken bij NHTV wilde ik me in iets nieuws vast bijten en dat werd een promotietraject. Onderwerp Mijn onderwerp is The resilient transport organisation. Hoe kunnen transportorganisaties zich weerbaarder opstellen in allerlei ontwikkelingen die op de orga - nisatie afkomen? Dat kunnen extreme dingen zijn, bijvoorbeeld een terroristische aanslag, en minder extreme dingen, zoals het failliet gaan van een toeleverancier. Ik ga uit van twee fundamentele factoren, vulnerabilities en capabilities, en ontwikkel een model dat internationaal toepasbaar is. De gedachte is te komen tot een balanced resilience, dat wil zeggen een balans tussen risico s die er zijn en de maatregelen ertegen. Energie! Ik heb ervaren dat er veel meer facetten zijn aan ieder onderwerp dan je in eerste instantie kunt bedenken. Verder is het een nieuw onderwerp in de sector en iedereen reageert enthousiast. I have found that, whatever topic you are involved in, there are so many more facets than meet the eye. Jochem Nuij Facility Manager with ISM ecompany Graduated in 2007 Verantwoordelijkheid, afwisseling en vrijheid; met die woorden typeert Jochem zijn werk als Facility Manager bij ISM, een internetbedrijf in Rotterdam. Jochem geeft leiding aan de facilitaire afdeling waar negen mensen zaken regelen als wagenpark, beveiliging, inkoop, arbo en telefonie. We regelen op vier locaties in binnen- en buitenland alle faciliteiten die nodig zijn om de medewerkers van ISM met focus hun werk te laten doen. Hoe ziet een werkdag van Jochem eruit? Responsibility, diversity and freedom; these are the words that Jochem uses to typify his job as Facility Manager with ISM, an internet company in Rotterdam. Jochem leads the facility support team, consisting of nine people who look after the company fleet, security, purchase, human resources and telephony. In four locations, at home and abroad, we provide the support and services that enable the employees of ISM to work more efficiently. What does a working day for Jochem look like? Mijn man komt uit India, we hebben zes jaar in Maleisië gewoond en voor m n werk heb ik over heel de wereld gereisd. In mijn boek Hoe wikkel je een sari om (2007) geef ik als insider en outsider mijn kijk op de Indiase samenleving, maar het beschrijft ook mijn worsteling met een andere cultuur. Uit ervaring weet ik hoe belangrijk het is om zelf te ontdekken hoe andere mensen de wereld zien. Ervaar het zelf, luister naar het verhaal van de ander, trek geen conclusies vanuit je eigen perspectief. Dat probeer ik studenten te leren. Ze moeten de diepte in, onderzoeken, interviewen, op zoek naar het verhaal achter bijvoorbeeld een immigrant en betekenis geven aan dat verhaal. Niet voortborduren op het bekende of het veronderstelde, laat die stereotypen los. Journalistiek en onderwijs verschillen niet zoveel van elkaar. Ik vind het leuk over te brengen wat ik in al die jaren heb ontdekt. Brigitte Ars Between Cultures Tussen culturen perfect place for me. I really like NHTV s innovative character, always venturing new paths, daring to refute the old. Ze is journalist, schrijver en docent interculturele communicatie aan NHTV. Alumna Brigitte Ars graduated in She is a journalist, writer and lecturer in intercultural communication at NHTV. Waar nieuwsjournalisten stoppen, wil ik verder gaan. Dat moet ook in de reisjournalistiek, anders kom je nergens. Je moet in alles een stap verder gaan. Wat mij interesseert is het verhaal achter het nieuws, het verhaal van mensen en daarom heb ik niet gekozen voor een studie journalistiek. Schrijven en me verdiepen in andere culturen, dat wilde ik. En met die combi zat ik bij NHTV prima op m n plek. Het leuke van NHTV vind ik het innovatieve karaker, het streven naar vernieuwing, oude dingen durven weerleggen. Dat was toen al en nu nog sterker. Ik heb na NHTV een studie antropologie en sociologie van nietwesterse samenlevingen gedaan en ik begon al tijdens die studie heel idealistisch als internationaal journalist voor het Rode Kruis. Daar was ik snel klaar mee en ik ging aan de slag als freelancer. Between cultures, that is the connecting thread in my life. I don t feel typically Dutch. My husband is from India, we lived in Malaysia for six years, and I have travelled all over the world for my work. In my book How to Drape a Sari (2007) I present my view of the Indian community, as insider and out - sider, but it also describes my personal struggle with a different culture. I know from experience how important it is to discover for yourself how other people see the world. Experience it yourself, listen to the other one s story, don t draw conclu - sions based on your own perspective. That is what I try to teach my students. They have to take the plunge, do research, hold interviews, look for the story behind, for instance, an immigrant and give this story meaning. Look beyond what is known or assumed, let go of those stereotypes. Journalism and education are not that different from each other. I like to communicate to people what I ve discovered over the years. Where news journalists stop, I want to go further. In travel journalism, you simply have to, or else you won t get anywhere. You have to take that extra step in everything. What I find interesting, is the story behind the news, the story of the people behind it and that is why I did not opt for a course in journalism. Writing and exploring other cultures, that was what I wanted to do. It didn t take me long to realise that that wasn t really my thing, and I set up as a freelancer. I did radio reports for Radio Nederland Wereldomroep (radio station for Dutch expats) and wrote articles for Volkskrant and IS Magazine. Most of the time I would set out with a photographer. Sometimes, however, I pursued stories on my own, which was rather tricky really. In Burma I interviewed human rights activist Aung San Suu Kyi at her home. This was strictly forbidden by the authorities, and when I came out, I saw police everywhere. I quickly jumped into a taxi and had it drive me to a market. I criss-crossed the place for what seemed like ages, until I had shaken off my pursuers. I do miss the excitement and adventure! Studenten hadden in mijn begintijd een bredere achtergrond qua werk- en buitenlandervaring, daar werd je zelfs op geselecteerd. Studeren was een Our Seasoned Pros bewustere keuze, naar mijn idee. Nu zie je dit trouwens nog wel, bij studenten die instromen vanuit het mtro bijvoorbeeld. Er is veel veranderd. Het modulesysteem is afgeschaft. Twee uur achtereen hoorcollege geven aan een grote zaal studenten is er echt niet meer bij. Vroeger had je veel minder persoonlijk contact met studenten, eigenlijk alleen tijdens excursiereizen of wanneer je ze begeleidde tijdens een stage of bij het afstuderen. Met het huidige projectonderwijs vindt er veel meer interactie plaats tussen docenten en studenten. Je leert de studenten veel beter kennen en je leert van elkaar. They had a broader-based background in terms of work experience and experience abroad; these were even among the selection criteria. Studying was a more conscious choice, in my opinion. Het Bredase publiek en NHTV hebben het Glazen Huis omarmd en gedurende zes dagen heeft miljoen Enorme drukte op de Grote Markt Het Glazen Huis Breda op z n kop gestaan. Er is een recordbedrag van d 5,6 miljoen opgehaald voor de vluchtelingenhulp van het Rode Kruis. You cannot have missed it In December 2008, the Glass House of the 3FM Serious Request campaign was located in Breda! The Breda audience and NHTV embraced the Glass House, and for six days Breda was upside down. A record amount of d 5.6 million was collected for Red Cross aid to refugees. NHTV heeft zeker haar steentje bijgedragen. Studenten van de opleiding Vrijetijdsmanagement coördineerden alle activiteiten die op de Grote Markt in Breda rondom het Glazen huis plaatsvonden. Ren, beleef en geef De studenten hebben zelf ook een actie op touw gezet om zoveel mogelijk geld binnen te halen. In een portocabin op de Grote Markt konden bezoekers van Het Glazen Huis onder het motto Ren, beleef en geef geld inzamelen door een minuut lang zo hard mogelijk te rennen op een lopende band. Bekende Nederlanders, zoals Minister Bert Koenders van Ontwikkelingszaken, renden hun longen uit t lijf op de lopende band. Ook de burgemeester van Breda, Peter van der Velden, zette z n beste beentje voor. In totaal werd op deze manier een bedrag van ruim d opgehaald. Met ruim 80 studenten die op allerlei manieren hebben meegewerkt, stond NHTV bijzonder goed in de belangstelling en 3FM was ook erg tevreden over de samenwerking met NHTV. NHTV certainly did its bit. The wheel has come full circle back to the essence! Na bijna 40 jaar nam Koert de Jager in maart van dit jaar afscheid van NHTV. Toerisme verbroedert Als coördinator recreatie-economische studierichting maakte Koert de overstap van puur vak - inhoudelijk bezig zijn naar meer managementgerichte taken. Na de fusie in 1986 met de VAT werd hij directeur van de faculteit toerisme en vrije tijd. Internationalisering had van meet af aan zijn bijzondere belangstelling. Oud-directeur Theo Bodewes en oud-bestuurder Martinus Kosters waren hier altijd al groot voorstander van, vertelt Koert. Al was het destijds geen gepland beleid, activiteiten vonden vooral plaats in het idealistische kader van toerisme verbroedert. Onder zijn leiding kwam er binnen de faculteit een Engelstalige studierichting en werden de contacten met buitenlandse universiteiten steeds verder uitgebreid. In die tijd heb ik Internationalisering Met de komst van nieuwe opleidingen is NHTV steeds internationaler geworden. In 2000 werd internationalisering speerpunt van beleid en Koert werd directeur van het nieuwe Strategisch Centrum Internationalisering. Lange tijd lag de nadruk op studentenmobiliteit. NHTV heeft inmiddels banden met meer dan 60 internationale partners en onder leiding van Koert kwam er steeds meer aandacht voor inhoudelijk samenwerken en gezamenlijk onderzoek. Co-creatie En nu is Koert bijzonder lector op het gebied van co-creatie. Officieel heet het lectoraat cocreation and tourism experience. Koert: Consumenten en ook toeristen worden steeds mondiger, zijn steeds beter geïnformeerd en zijn op zoek naar zelfexpressie en zingeving en kwaliteit van het leven. Hierdoor is er een kloof ontstaan tussen de consument van vandaag en de ondernemingslogica van gisteren. Veel bedrijven zijn nog steeds gericht op massaproductie voor massaconsumptie en hebben niet in de gaten dat de manier waarop we consumeren ingrijpend is veranderd. Consumenten willen meer interactie met bedrijven. Voor mij is het kringetje rond. Ik kan weer lekker inhoudelijk aan de slag! Koert: I started in 1970 at NWIT, which was situated at Haagweg in Breda. Overeenkomst: Ze studeerden allebei aan NHTV. Hun ervaringen? Totaal verschillend! Mother and daughter. In common: They both studied at NHTV. Their experiences? Totally different! Hoe heb je je studententijd ervaren? Ik vond het geweldig. Ik zat in de derde lichting van het NWIT, de voorloper van NHTV. Die lichting bestond uit zestig studenten, het was een hechte club. Naar mijn idee nogal anders dan toen Maartje aan NHTV studeerde. In haar tijd was alles een stuk minder kleinschalig. Ik heb nog veel contact met mijn studiegenoten. We houden elke vijf jaar een reünie. Het grappige is dat een aantal van mijn studiegenoten later docent waren van Maartje, zoals Marc Permeke. How did you experience life as a student? I enjoyed it tremendously. I was among the third intake of students of NWIT, NHTV s predecessor. This intake consisted of sixty students, we were a close group. Things were very different then from the time when Maartje studied at NHTV. By the time she started, the institute had assumed a more large-scale character. I still have regular contact with my former classmates. We organise a reunion every five years. It s rather funny that a number of my former classmates became lecturers of Maartje later, such as Marc Permeke. Aparte ervaring? Met al mijn studiegenoten was wel iets aparts. Het was bepaald geen doorsnede van de samenleving. Mijn studententijd stond echt in het teken van loskomen van thuis. We waren allemaal flink aan het puberen. Ik woonde op kamers met vijf vriendinnen aan de Paul Windhausenweg, een chique buurt. Uiteindelijk zijn we allemaal uit het huis gezet. Er werd veel over ons geroddeld in de buurt, want er kwamen geregeld jongens bij ons over de vloer. Experience to remember? Each of my fellow students had something distinctive. We weren t precisely a representative cross-section of society. My study period was really all about disconnecting yourself from home. We were all going through adolescence. I lived in a student house together with five friends on Paul Windhausen - weg, a high-class neighbourhood. In the end, we all got kicked out. People in the neighbourhood gossiped about us all the time, because we regularly had male visitors. Leukste herinnering? De excursies! Aanschouwelijk onderwijs, zoals we dat noemden, maakte een groot deel uit van het curriculum. De mooiste en indrukwekkendste excursie was die naar het Olympisch Dorp in München. Wij waren daar met Pasen in 1972, zagen de voorbereidingen voor de Spelen die in de zomer werden gehouden. Interessant, omdat we daar achter de schermen mochten kijken en zo ook zagen wat München allemaal heeft gedaan om een aantrekkelijke stad te worden. Als je je dan realiseert dat daar de Israëlische sporters zijn vermoord, is dat erg heftig. Special memory? The field trips! Teaching by visual aids, as we called it, dominated the curriculum. The most memorable field trip of all was that to the Olympic village in Munich. We were there at Easter 1972, to witness the preparations for the Olympic Games, which were to be held that summer. It was very interesting, because we were allowed to have a peek behind the scenes, and in this way, we could see the efforts that the city of Munich made in order to become an attractive city. When you realise that this was where the Israeli athletes were killed, it is an all the more intense and emotional experience. Na je studie? Wist ik eigenlijk niet goed wat ik wilde. Ik kon ook niet echt snel een baan vinden. Ik verhuisde naar Utrecht voor het werk van mijn man, kreeg drie kinderen en ben toen in 1981 aan een studie rechten begonnen in Utrecht. En daar viel alles op zijn plek. Ik heb me gespecialiseerd in sociale geografie en ruimtelijk bestuursrecht, een vak waarvan ik de beginselen al op het NWIT had opgedaan. Uiteindelijk ben ik juridisch beleidsmedewerker bij de Gemeente Utrecht geworden en ben in de politiek gerold met het woordvoerderschap Ruimtelijke Ordening. Het NWIT heeft mij hiervoor een goede basis gegeven. After your studies? Actually, I didn t really know what I wanted. Nor did I find a job very quickly. I moved to Utrecht, because of my husband s work, got three children, and took up a law course in 1981 in Utrecht. It was then that everything fell in place. I specialised in social geography and spatial administrative law, the basic principles of which I had been taught about at NWIT. In the end, I became a legal policy officer with the City of Utrecht and entered the world of politics by acting as the spokeswoman for Spatial Planning. Ik ben op kamers gaan wonen, dat werd door mijn ouders enorm gestimuleerd. Het was een gezellige tijd, al heb ik in tegenstelling tot mijn moeder helemaal geen contact meer met studiegenoten. Als ik de verhalen van mijn moeder hoor, moet ik concluderen dat het bij mij toch echt heel anders was. Veel grootschaliger en minder close. Er zaten wel zes keer zoveel studenten in mijn eerste jaar dan bij haar. How did you experience life as a student? Stimulated by my parents, I left home to go and live in a student house. It was a great time, although unlike my mother, I don t have contact with my fellow students any more. When I hear my mother s stories, I have to admit that things were quite different in my time. A much greater scale and less closeness. In my first year, there were six times as many student than in hers. Aparte ervaring? Ik denk met gemengde gevoelens terug aan NHTV en aan de opleiding zelf. Ik ben gewoon niet gemaakt om in de collegebanken te zitten. De laatste twee jaar waren eigenlijk het leukste, toen ben ik namelijk amper op school geweest en dat is toch best apart. Ik studeerde in het buitenland, liep stage en deed allerlei projecten bij bedrijven. Aan die periode denk ik met veel plezier terug. Experience to remember? I think back about NHTV and my studies with mixed feelings. I am just not cut out to sit in school all day. I enjoyed the last two years the most, because I hardly went to school in that period, which is rather special. I studied abroad, did my work placement, and carried out all sorts of projects for companies in the industry. That was without a doubt my best experience at NHTV. Leukste herinnering? Studeren in Flagstaff! Eigenlijk heb ik daar pas echt het studentenleven beleefd. Studeren was bijzaak. Ik was daar met vijf andere meiden van NHTV, we zijn echte vriendinnen geworden. Ik was pas 20 jaar en mocht nog geen alcohol drinken. Van een Fries paspoort, dat je in Friesland bij elke VVV kunt krijgen, flanste ik een eigen paspoort in elkaar en zo kon ik toch aan alcohol komen. Het mooie aan Amerika is dat je op de campus echt alles kunt doen, werken, uit eten gaan, noem maar op. Special memory? Studying in Flagstaff! This is in fact where I got a real taste of life as a student. Studying was of secondary importance. I went there with five other girls from NHTV, and we became real friends. At the time, I was only 20, which meant that I wasn t allowed to drink any alcohol. I solved this problem by rustling up a passport out of a Friesian passport, which you can get at any tourist information office in Friesland. The great thing about the US is that you don t have to leave campus for anything: working, going out to dinner, you name it, it s all there. Na je studie? Heb ik met mijn studie aan NHTV eigenlijk weinig gedaan. Ik ben twee jaar intercedent geweest, maar dat was het niet voor mij. Uiteindelijk ben ik, net als mijn moeder, weer gaan studeren, Cultuur, Organisatie & Management in Amsterdam. Ik was toen al in verwachting van mijn eerste kind. De studie was puur uit interesse. Ik werk nu bij een organisatieadviesbureau. Het organiseren zit in mijn bloed. Dat heeft mijn moeder ook. Wij staan altijd vooraan om uitjes en feestjes te organiseren. Ook de basis hiervoor ligt bij NHTV. Daar heb ik geleerd pragmatisch te zijn, alles begint bij een goed stappenplan. After your studies? Eventually, I did not do much with my NHTV degree. I was an intermediary with an employment agency for two years, but that wasn t really my thing. In the end, I took up studying again - Culture, Organisation and Management in Amsterdam, out of pure interest - just like my mother. At the time, I was expecting my first child. At the moment, I am working with an event consultancy firm. Organising is in my blood, I take after my mother in that respect. We are always eager to organise outings and parties. This is also something you learn at NHTV: being pragmatic. After all, everything starts with a good step-by-step plan. Als je er niets leuks uit kunt halen hier, dan doe je echt iets compleet verkeerd. De verhuizing van Tilburg naar Breda vond ik in eerste instantie vreselijk. Inmiddels ben ik van Our Seasoned Pros mening dat het nu niet slechter of beter is dan vroeger, maar gewoon anders. Gelukkig zijn de lijnen tussen studenten en docenten even kort gebleven. Mijn leukste herinnering? Het optreden als The Beatles tijdens de introductieweek, samen met collega s Maarten van Rijn, Sjef de Jong en Ben Post. De introductieweek geeft overigens meteen het verschil aan tussen de student van vroeger en de huidige student. Twintig jaar geleden was het een hele eer als je gevraagd werd voor de introductiecommissie, nu wordt eerst gekeken of t wel in de agenda past. 12 EERSTE LICHTING 100 pioniers Samen met 99 andere pioniers begon ik in 2001 aan de nieuwe hotelopleiding van NHTV. Het was een uitdaging voor iedereen. Ook voor het management, dat ons genoeg ruimte gaf onze mening te ventileren. Vanaf het begin is een realistisch beeld neergezet door docenten uit t échte werkveld die ons een prima mix van theorie en praktijk aanboden. Ik was altijd al geïnteresseerd in hospitality, maar door deze uitdaging is mijn passie pas goed aangewakkerd! Na mijn buitenlandstage in Cuba werd ik klaargestoomd voor het afstudeertraject. Competentiegericht leren en afstuderen -wow- moesten we ineens onszelf beoordelen. Bewijsmateriaal aandragen, aantonen dat je competent bent voor t vak. In mijn afstudeerproject werd ik ernstig gestimuleerd verder te kijken dan examens en tests en door dieper in te gaan op de materie vond ik een hele andere kant van mezelf. Ik leerde beslissingen nemen, plannen en analyseren. Na m n afstuderen heb ik 18 maanden in Amerika gewerkt. 505 kamers, 8 restaurants, 5 sterren en 1 van de langste stranden van Dubai Ik werk nu als Reception Manager bij Le Meridien Mina Seyahi, een 5-star beach resort in Dubai. Het hotel is open sinds 1999, wat een eeuwigheid is in Dubai waar de hotels als paddenstoelen uit de grond schieten.
