1 DAILY SHIPPING NEWSLETTER : Saturday LOOK FOR THE LATEST UPDATE OF THE KURSK SALVAGE AT : At Barents Sea Naval aircraft of the Northern Fleet tighten control over the region of the sunken Kursk submarine Deep-sea divers today (August 3) are to clear out the space between the two hulls in the 7th compartment of the stricken Kursk submarine. The Special Mission Expedition is patrolling the region of the future Kursk lifting operation. Norwegian reconnaissance ships are operating in direct proximity to the area. Divers have already cut two technological holes in the pressure hull of the 5th compartment. All day today, the divers will be cleaning out the space between the two hulls of the 7th compartment since according to the plan, 7 technological holes are to be cut in the pressure hull. A plate that was cut out of the outer hull of the 8th compartment has been dismantled. The divers are cleaning out the space between the two hulls, and are preparing to cut off a fragment of the flooding tank to get better access to the pressure hull and begin the stenciling of technological holes on it. The Special Mission Expedition consists of the large anti-submarine ship Severomorsk for protecting the area, a KIL-143 vessel that is responsible for radiation monitoring around the stricken Kursk, the MB-100 seagoing tug and the Svir hospital ship. 2 Two Norwegian reconnaissance ships, the Sverdrup and the Marjata, are operational in close proximity to the region. They are being watched by the Severomorsk. Naval aircraft of the Northern Fleet are tightening control over the region of the sunken submarine. The water environment is being monitored at regular intervals. The radiation level is less than 3 microroentgen/hr, i.e., normal. Weather in the region: wind velocity 12 m/sec, moderate rough sea. gripper test Today, another gripper test was successfully completed at the Krylov Institute in Russia. The test consisted of a 2000 ton pulling test on the inner hull of the Kursk. Lifting units ( Photo : Left ) This week the assembly street of the lifting units became operational. In this assembly street the strandjack, the strand reel, the inner and outer tube of the heave compensation system, the gripper and the re- entry jack & ring are assembled into one piece. At this moment 3 of these complete lifting units have been assembled. The first lifting unit is expected to be installed on the Giant 4 on Monday the 6th of August. Giant 4 On the giant 4, the lifting units foundation work is completed as well as the reinforcement grillage. Het schip werd in februari geramd door een Amerikaanse onderzeeër en zonk voor de kust van Hawaii. Negen Japanners kwamen daarbij om het leven. Een woordvoerder van Smit Internationale zei woensdagavond dat de berging onder Nederlandse leiding staat. Eerst wordt er onder het schip door geboord, waarna er metalen platen aan kabels onderdoor worden getrokken.,,we vormen als het ware een soort mandje waarin het schip omhoog wordt gehesen'', verklaarde de zegsman. Daarna wordt de Ehime Maru in zijn geheel naar boven gehesen. Omdat de boot op een diepte van ongeveer 600 meter ligt, wordt het werk onder water door robots gedaan.,,er kunnen geen duikers bij, dan zouden de procedures veel te ingewikkeld worden. Die mensen zouden maar kort bij het schip kunnen blijven en zouden daarna de decompressietank in moeten.'' Uiterlijk begin oktober moet het Japanse schip boven water zijn. Inmiddels is Smit Internationale enkele maanden bezig met de voorbereidingen van de berging.,,materiaal en schepen worden gemobiliseerd. Bijna alles ligt in Honolulu, klaar om verscheept te worden.'' De masten en antennes zijn met explosieven van het 499 ton metende vissersschip verwijderd.,,dat is praktischer, zo kunnen we overal bij'', legde de Smit-woordvoerder uit. Volgens hem wil de Amerikaanse marine van de onderdelen een monument maken. Op 9 februari ramde de Amerikaanse onderzeeboot Greeneville de Ehime Maru tijdens een oefening. De onderzeeër kwam op hoge snelheid aan het wateroppervlak, een manoeuvre die in geval van nood levensreddend kan zijn voor de opvarenden ervan. De Ehime Maru had 35 opvarenden, van wie er negen nooit zijn teruggevonden. Kapitein Scott Waddle is niet vervolgd voor het incident. Wel kreeg hij van zijn admiraal een reprimande wegens onprofessioneel gedrag. In oktober wordt zijn carrire bij de marine eervol beëindigd. Het incident heeft de Japanners zo diep getroffen dat de burgemeester van de stad Uwajima half juli besloot de Hollywoodfilm Pearl Harbor te verbieden. 4 U.S. Navy Confident of Raising Japanese Ship HONOLULU (Reuters) - The U.S. Navy said on Thursday it was confident that it would successfully raise the Japanese fishing vessel sunk off Hawaii in February by one of its nuclear submarines, and was hopeful of recovering some of the bodies of the nine people killed in the accident. As final preparations were being made on board a salvage vessel for next week's attempt, Rear Adm. William Klemm, the officer in charge of the $40 million operation to recover the Ehime Maru, rated the Navy's chances of successfully raising the ship as high as 80 percent. ``I have very high confidence that we will be able to get to the point where we can lift the ship,'' Klemm said. ``I think the much greater risk comes at the point where we raise the ship and have to move it.'' ``If we have broken the ship so severely, it will prevent us from continuing the mission,'' he added. The Navy has hired a civilian ship, Rockwater 2, from a Texas company to gently raise the 190-foot Ehime Maru off the ocean floor 2,000 feet below the surface, carry it in a giant sling 13 nautical miles and set it down in shallow 115-foot waters where divers can enter and search for bodies. The Ehime Maru, a trawler used to teach Japanese high school students about the fisheries industry, was about 9 miles off Oahu, Hawaii on Feb. 9 when it was rammed by the USS Greeneville during an emergency surfacing drill and sank. Twenty-six people survived but nine people, including four teen-age boys, were never found. The Navy promised their relatives that every attempt would be made to recover their bodies, but Klemm said he expected divers to only find five to seven of the missing people. Based on their last-known locations on the ship, Klemm said some of those killed may have made it to the outside of the sinking ship but died when it slipped beneath the waves. The Rockwater 2 is expected to head out to sea early next week and Klemm said the Ehime Maru will probably be moved in late August and that divers would attempt to recover bodies in September. More than 45 divers will work from a barge anchored over the ship in shallow waters, and they expect to have to force their way through mangled passageways and watertight doors. Stuart Ramage, master of the 5,991-tonRockwater 2, said his ship had special thrusters to keep it stationary during the recovery operation in which remote submersibles will attach 4-inch thick cables to the Ehime Maru. ``We've picked up aircraft and helicopters, but we have never picked up anything like this,'' Ramage said of the 499-tonship. ``We all appreciate the sensitivity of this and hope we can do a successful job.'' 2 Ehime Maru masts removed, sent to Hawaii navy base HONOLULU, Aug. 2, Kyodo - Two masts, taken from the Japanese fisheries training vessel that was hit and sunk by a surfacing U.S. submarine on Feb. 9, were removed early Thursday from a Navychartered salvage ship and sent to the local naval base, a U.S. Navy official said. The official said the center mast and the forward mast were removed from the ill-fated Ehime Maru as part of the U.S. Navy's plan to raise the ship and move it to shallower waters to allow divers to search for nine missing crew members, including four high-school students, who are believed to be entombed inside the vessel. The center mast is expected to be eventually returned to Japan, probably to be used as a memorial. The 3,390-ton Ocean Hercules, which recovered the two masts, began work on July 14 and has been clearing fishing nets and other obstacles from the Ehime Maru at the site about 14 kilometers off Diamond Head, where the ship now rests on the sea floor about 600 meters deep. The Ocean Hercules, which operates a remotely controlled vehicle, is responsible for clearing the Ehime Maru's decks to make way for a later operation to lift the Ehime Maru and move it to a shallow shoal off the Honolulu international airport. 5 From there, divers from the U.S. Navy and Japan's Maritime Self-Defense Force would search and, if found, retrieve the remains of the missing crew members, their personal effects and other objects. The 499-ton Ehime Maru was struck and sunk by the U.S. nuclear-powered submarine Greeneville, while it was conducting an emergency surfacing maneuver for a group of civilian visitors. Sri Lanka detains fishing boat with 54 illegal immigrants (COLOMBO) Sri Lankan police have detained a fishing trawler and its owner who tried to transport some 54 would-be illegal immigrants to Australia, officials said. Police at the north-western town of Negombo had launched an investigation following the arrest of the man on Sunday when his trawler returned to a fishing harbour unable to make the trip to Australia, police said. 'Our information is that they were on their way to Australia and because of rough seas they were forced to return,' Chief Inspector Gamini Mathurata said on Tuesday. All but two of the passengers escaped before police could get to them, Mr Mathurata said. Small boats packed like sardines with young Sri Lankans seeking greener pastures in Europe, Australia or Japan have frequently been detected or turned back after reaching their destinations. Fees for travelling to Europe or Australia range from 150,000 rupees (S$5,700) to 300,000 rupees for a one-way perch aboard a trawler. In April, police arrested the owner and skipper of a small fishing boat that was packed with 123 men who were on their way to Italy. They were forced to return when their boat collided with an Indian craft. The fishing boats, meant to carry a handful of crewmen, are equipped with deep freezers to store their catch for a few days, but the cold rooms are converted to living quarters for the illegal immigrants. Police reports show that crew sometimes scuttle the boats near foreign shores and decamp together with those trying to enter other countries illegally. In April this year, some 24 Sri Lankans were found wandering in the bush near Exmouth, in Australia's isolated northwest, after they were allegedly abandoned by people-smugglers. Australian police who took the asylum-seekers into custody in mid-april said they were lucky to be alive. Exxon to ship Venezuelan synthetic crude ExxonMobil is seeking new opportunities in petrochemicals and natural gas in Venezuela as it gets ready to ship an initial cargo of synthetic crude from its $2 billion Cerro Negro joint-venture, a spokesman said yesterday. Cerro Negro's crude upgrading unit on the Venezuela s Caribbean coast commenced operations last month, upgrading tarry crude suitable for its US refinery. Cerro Negro is a joint venture between Petroleos de Venezuela and ExxonMobil, each holding 42 per cent and Germany's Veba Oel with 17 per cent. Although Venezuela has ratified its third Opec oil output reduction this year, the Cerro Negro project would gain some time before its production was affected. During startup operations, full production volumes of 120,000 barrels a day of heavy crude will be maintained. Since Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez assumed control in 1999, his government has worked to promote investment in petrochemicals and natural gas. 6 Bulk Carrier Stops To Dump Cocaine The Capesize bulk carrier Anangel Destiny called into Saldanha Bay, Cape Town on Thursday to hand police 155 kg of cocaine that crew had discovered during routine maintenance on a voyage from Brazil. "The vessel's crew were doing routine maintenance on July they were changing the sea suction filters -- when they discovered the packages," the ship's chartering manager Colm Nolan, of Londonbased Agelef Shipping, said. He said that given the location of the packages, they had "undoubtedly been put in from under the hull", probably by scuba-divers. The ship had left Brazil with its 170,000 ton iron ore cargo on July 17. "The moment they discovered it, they reported it to the authorities," said Agelef Chief Financial Officer Dimitri Stylianou. The Anangel Destiny diverted from its journey to China to offload the cocaine and to allow South African police the opportunity to search the vessel and interview the crew. Nolan said that the crew were never regarded as suspects by the South African authorities, who had thanked them for their cooperation. The ship left Saldanha Bay on Thursday and is now underway to China to complete its voyage and unload its cargo at a Chinese steel plant. The discovery follows hot on the heels of the July 21 discovery of 199 kg of cocaine on the tanker Aramis calling in San Fransisco on a voyage from Ecuador. One of the Aramis crew was indicted last Friday on four counts of importing cocaine with intent to distribute. SHIPYARD NEWS Lamprell gains more yard space in reconfiguration "The pads will be used in conjunction with newly acquired tower cranes and forklift trucks to support and service the extended fabrication capability in the yard," explained Peter Whitbread, group chief executive. As part of the overall expansion, the company has also built an additional project office and, in conjunction with the port authorities, repaired and refurbished a 350-metre length of the deepwater quay wall. Rig refurbishment company Lamprell, in conjunction with Sharjah Port Authority, has acquired another 9,000 square metres of yard space as part of a reconfiguration of its South Yard. The additional area, designated largely for storage and logistics, will enable the company to lay down a further 6,000 square metres of heavy duty concrete fabrication pads, bringing up the total to 14,000 square metres of concrete hard standing for fabrication and allied operations. Meanwhile, rig refurbishment activity continues to proceed apace, with Nabors Drilling having awarded three contracts for rig upgrades, even as fabrication of the 80-man North Pailin living quarters module is set for completion in October. The company has also won an order from SBM to fabricate the external turret for the Amenam/Kpono Field FSO, being developed by Elf Petroleum Nigeria Ltd. Scheepswerf Den Breejen groeit uit tot complete nieuwbouwwerf DEVENTER, De van oorsprong in sectie en cascobouw gespecialiseerde Scheepswerf Jac. den Breejen aan de Havenstraat in Hardinxveld Giessendam, is de afgelopen jaren uitgegroeid tot een all round nieuwbouw, afbouw en reparatiewerf. Bouwde de werf vroeger alleen casco s, nu worden complete schepen afgeleverd. Voor de cascobouw moet de werf het vooral hebben van speciaaltjes. We moesten verbreden en zelf klussen aannemen in plaats van onderaannemer zijn, zegt algemeen directeur Jaques den Breejen van de aan de kop van de Beneden Merwede gelegen werf. De laatste casco s waren tankers met RVS tanks, dat was in Daarna moest de werf overschakelen op de bouw van bijvoorbeeld aanmeerpontons en de verlenging van coastertjes. Het maakt niet uit wat we in de hal bouwen, als we maar bouwen. In het verleden hebben we weleens een casco in Roemenië besteld, maar dat doen we liever niet. Onze werf moet zèlf productie halen in de cascobouw. Het gros van onze eigen uren zit in het staal. We bouwen ook secties voor andere werven. De deurmat van de 110 meter lange nieuwbouwhal is achttien meter breed. De werf last de secties eventueel buiten aan elkaar. Er is geen helling. Een helling aanleggen is heel duur, zegt Den Breejen. En nu hebben we het voordeel van een vlakke vloer, op een helling bouw je altijd scheef. Voor zware stukken komt er een bok. Tot veertig ton kan de werf zelf tillen. Den Breejen vindt een lift in de loods het mooist. De schepen binnen in het water laten zakken en zo naar buiten varen. Serie van vier Eén van de speciaaltjes is de bouw van een serie van vier passagiersschepen voor de Rijn en de Donau. Die schepen zijn dunner en moeten een heel strakke huid krijgen. Dan moet je niet te zwaar lassen en het staal opspannen, zegt Den Breejen. We bouwen het dekhuis met zes, de romp met zeven millimeter, het vlak in negen en voor en achterkant in twaalf. En natuurlijk lichtere spanten. De werf levert de schepen, waarvan er intussen één in de vaart is, compleet af. De Scheepvaartinspectie stelt strenge eisen aan de brandveiligheid van passagiersschepen. Elke hut moet tot aan het dek toe dicht zitten met brandvertragend materiaal, dus ook achter de plafonds. De passagiersschepen worden voorzien van twee 800 kw hoofdmotoren van Deutz die via een cardanas twee 360 graden draaibare Aquamaster Z drives aandrijven. Deze hebben twee contraroterende schroeven. Daarmee lopen de schepen 25 kilometer per uur. Twee 300 kva generatoren, eveneens van Deutz, verzorgen de stroomvoorziening. De boegschroef komt van Veth. Om voor de Donau een kruiplijn van zes meter te krijgen, zakt de stuurhut gedeeltelijk in het dek. Ook de verschansing en zonnetent van het bovendek zijn neerklapbaar. En de schoorstenen zakken hydraulisch. Bovendien zitten er ballasttanks in de dubbele bodem van de schepen. De werf is nu bezig met het casco van de River Empress (110 x 11,40 meter). Het is een zusterschip van de onlangs aan de Kamphuizen Holland River Line afgeleverde River Princess en moet in maart volgend jaar klaar zijn. Met de opdracht voor de bouw van de vier passagiersschepen heeft de werf tot begin 2003 werk. PSi-Daily Shipping News Page 7 08/03/01

8 Sinds de werf zich met engineering en projectbegeleiding bezighoudt is er een kleine tekenafdeling die de ontwerptekeningen omwerkt tot werk en constructietekeningen. Sommige dingen, bijvoorbeeld veerponten doen we helemaal zelf, die zijn redelijk eenvoudig. Voor andere dingen werken we samen met architectenbureaus. Zo leverde de werf twee weken geleden een veerpont af aan De Maasveren. We kregen van de opdrachtgever een handgetekende schets. Die hebben we helemaal zelf uitgewerkt. In februari kwam de opdracht en in juli kon de pont varen. Ze vaart op de Maas tussen Appeltern en Megen en kan aan de kabel, maar ook vrijvarend worden gebruikt. Het veer (24 x 13,39 meter) beschikt over twee 95 kw MAN motoren. Nieuwe machines De werf doet het snijwerk voor de casco s zelf. Nu nog met een, via een optisch oog en op ware grote gesneden mallen aangestuurde snijmachine, maar binnenkort met een splinternieuwe computergestuurde plasmasnijder. Drie maanden geleden kocht de werf ook een nieuwe acht meter lange machinedraaibank, een Poolse Poreba. Voor de ervaren bankwerker Ari van Houwelingen, die zestien jaar bij Exalto werkte, reden over te stappen naar Den Breejen. Met de nieuwe draaibank kan de werf grote schroefasinstallaties maken en opdrachten van derden aannemen. Van Houwelingen heeft drie à vier dagen werk aan het maken van een schroefasinstallatie. De draaibank is niet computergestuurd, maar dat zou volgens hem bij de productie van enkele stuks ook geen voordelen bieden. Alleen wanneer je grote series maakt is dat handig. Van Houwelingen, die zelfstandig werkt, heeft er zichtbaar plezier in. Ik zal weer een flinke berg metaalkrullen moeten opvegen vandaag. Sinds de aankoop, vier jaar geleden van de aan het terrein grenzende werkhaven van Baggermaatschappij Holland is ook het reparatie en afbouwwerk sterk toegenomen. Er liggen twee stevendokken. Nu kunnen we uit de voeten met de reparatie en ook casco s afbouwen voor derden, zegt Den Breejen. We nemen twee casco s tegelijk aan, meer is lastig. Het werk valt qua uren mee, in vergelijking met de eigen nieuwbouw. De klant kan zelf de timmerman en elektricien kiezen. Wij doen vooral coördinatie, montage en afwerking. Tussen nu en 2003 staan vijftien afbouwopdrachten op het planbord. Momenteel is de werf bezig met de afbouw van een chemicaliëntanker van 115 x 11,40 meter, waarvan het casco is gebouwd in de Oekraïne. Op vakantie Dit jaar gaat de werf voor het eerst sinds jaren weer drie weken helemaal dicht. Belangrijk nadeel van gespreide vakanties is, volgens Jacques den Breejen, dat drie maanden lang mensen binnen de organisatieketen niet aanspreekbaar zijn. Het is een echt familiebedrijf. Broer neef en nicht van de huidige directeur zijn verantwoordelijk voor respectievelijk productie en nieuwbouw, de reparatieafdeling en het financieel management. Er werken veertig mensen in vaste dienst plus een aantal ingeleende krachten. ROUTE, PORTS & SERVICES Shipping lines revise rates on Far East routes Prices in Dubai will be affected after an increase of $100 for every 20-foot container coming from the Far East to regions in the Gulf and Middle East. The increase will be implemented from 1 September. Half of Dubai's annual imports are from East Asia and the freight increase will be passed on to the importers. The 16 lines operating on Far East to Middle East trade named the hike a "rate restoration" but raised the rates as the volume of trade increased. 9 Celebrity Cruises deploys new ships in Hawaii and Panama Canal Celebrity Cruises will deploy two of its newest, most environmentally advanced ships, Infinity and Summit, in Hawaii and the Panama Canal in 2002, offering 29 varied open-jaw sailings. Eighty percent of the staterooms on both ships offer ocean views; 74 percent of those have their own private veranda, allowing guests to enjoy spectacular views of these regions. Both Infinity and Summit are powered by smokeless gas-turbine engines. Celebrity's 1,950-guest Infinity will reprise her presence in Hawaii next year, offering 12 sailings between May 10, 2002 and May 21, 2003, and visiting five destinations in the Hawaiian Islands. Summit will sail four cruises between May 3 to September 24, Infinity and Summit also will present 13- and 14-night cruises through the Panama Canal to destinations including the Caribbean, Mexican Riviera, Costa Rica and South America. J. Verschelden nieuwe topman bij Wijsmuller Rotterdam/IJmuiden - Directeur J. Verschelden van containerrederij Maersk Sealand wordt de nieuwe topman van sleep- en bergingsbedrijf Wijsmuller in IJmuiden. Met de benoeming van Verschelden, die namens Maersk ruim twintig jaar in Rotterdam heeft gewerkt, is de overname van Wijsmuller door Svitzer, een 'zusje' van Maersk Sealand, een feit. Verschelden (49) is formeel per 1 augustus in dienst getreden bij Wijsmuller. In Rotterdam was hij tot die datum adjunct-directeur van de Benelux-organisatie van de rederij. In die functie was hij verantwoordelijk voor elfhonderd werknemers. Hij blijft voorlopig aan als commissaris bij de Maersk Delta-containerterminal, een joint-venture met de Rotterdamse stuwadoor ECT, en bij European Rail Shuttle (ERS), het spoorbedrijf van enkele grote rederijen dat mede op zijn initiatief is opgericht. Het vertrek van Verschelden uit Rotterdam is een verrassing. Hij was één van de hoofdrolspelers in de discussie over de eigen containerterminal van Maersk Sealand in de Rotterdamse haven. Na slepende onderhandelingen hierover, en na ingrijpen van toenmalig minister Wijers (Economische Zaken), heeft Verschelden de Maersk Delta-terminal uit het vuur gesleept. Onder leiding van Verschelden is de terminal ingericht en in gebruik genomen. Met ECT wordt al onderhandeld over uitbreiding. Bij sleep- en bergingsbedrijf Wijsmuller gaat Verschelden de directie leiden. Andere directieleden zijn M. A. Wijsmuller en C. B. van der Zwan. De nieuwe eigenaar Svitzer is onderdeel van de Deense A. P. Møller-groep, waartoe ook rederij Maersk Sealand behoort. Bij Wijsmuller vertrekken de huidige directieleden V. Muller en G. Philip. Wijsmuller zal binnen de Svitzer/A.P. Møller Groep een eigen positie innemen en verantwoordelijk blijven voor de internationale ontwikkeling van de sleepvaart- en bergingsactiviteiten.
