1 Juli 2015 July 2015 Voorwoord Foreword In 2013 ging de eerste Vlaamse Tier-1 supercomputer in productie. Vandaag maken Vlaamse onderzoekers en enkele bedrijven er intensief gebruik van. Er zijn echter nog inspanningen nodig om de Tier-1 gebruikersgemeenschap verder uit te bouwen. Door onderzoeksvragen met behulp van de Tier-1 naar een hoger niveau te tillen, door nieuwe onderzoekslijnen uit te bouwen en door meer bedrijven te overtuigen om van de geboden rekenmogelijkheden gebruik te maken. In de ICT-sector gaan de ontwikkelingen echter zo razendsnel dat permanente investeringen, zowel in de Tier-2 infrastructuur aan de universiteiten als in de Tier-1 supercomputer, een absolute noodzaak zijn om internationaal een betekenisvolle rol te blijven spelen. Bij de opmaak van de begroting 2015 vroeg de Herculesstichting extra middelen om het meerjarige investeringsplan voor High Performance Computing (HPC) uit te voeren. Omwille van budgettaire redenen was hiervoor echter geen ruimte. Omdat er dringend actie op het vlak van de vervanging van de Tier-1 genomen moest worden, besliste de Raad van Bestuur om 5.5 miljoen euro vrij te maken binnen de bestaande dotatie. Aan de universiteiten werd gevraagd voorstellen in te dienen voor de huisvesting en de technische exploitatie van deze machine. Het voorstel van de enige kandidaat, KU Leuven, werd door een panel van onafhankelijke experten als uitstekend beoordeeld. Momenteel loopt de aankoopprocedure. Bij het opstellen van het lastenboek werd ondermeer gebruik gemaakt van resultaten van de bevraging van de huidige en potentiële gebruikers van de Tier- 1. Het plan voorziet om tegen midden 2016 de nieuwe Tier-1 progressief in gebruik te nemen. Om hiaten in de dienstverlening te vermijden zal de Tier-1 aan de UGent nog gedurende enige tijd beschikbaar blijven. In het kader van een evenwichtige uitbouw van de HPCinfrastructuur worden in 2016 meer middelen voorzien voor de uitbreiding en de vernieuwing van de Tier-2 clusters aan de Vlaamse universiteiten. Today Flemish researchers and some companies use it intensively. However, more efforts are needed to further develop the Tier-1 user community. Through lifting the research to a higher level by using the Tier-1, by developing new lines of research and by convincing more companies to make use of the offered computing capabilities. In the ICT sector, however, the developments happen so quickly that a continuous investment in both the Tier-2 infrastructure at the universities and in the Tier-1 supercomputer, are an absolute necessity to continue playing a meaningful role internationally. When drawing up the 2015 budget, the Hercules Foundation asked for additional funds to carry out the long-term investment plan for High Performance Computing (HPC). Due to budgetary reasons this request could not be granted. Because urgent action for the replacement of the Tier-1 had to be taken, the Governing Board decided to release 5.5 million euro within the existing endowment. The universities were asked to submit proposals for the housing and the technical operation of this machine. The proposal by the only candidate, KU Leuven, was rated as excellent by a panel of independent experts. Currently the purchasing procedure is ongoing. The results from the survey of current and potential users of the Tier-1 were used to draw up the specifications. The plan proposes to start using the new Tier-1 progressively by mid To avoid gaps in service the Tier-1 at Ugent will remain available for some time. In the context of a balanced development of the HPC infrastructure more resources will be provided in 2016 for the expansion and renovation of the Tier-2 clusters at the Flemish universities. Het overzicht van het Tier-1 gebruik toont een nieuw record sinds het begin van de productieperiode: een gebruik van meer dan 85% van de capaciteit van de Tier-1 tijdens drie opeenvolgende weken. Noteer dat een bezetting van 85% overeenkomt met een volzet systeem. Tien aanvragers van rekentijd krijgen heel binnenkort een positief antwoord toegestuurd. En lees door tot het einde van deze VSC Echo en ontdek hoe de nieuwe VSC website er uitziet. Een van de volgende dagen wordt deze online gezet en kun je de ganse inhoud bekijken. Tier-1 nieuws Tier-1 News Aanvraag van rekentijd en afsluitdata Rekenaanvragen voor de Tier-1 kunnen permanent worden ingediend maar de laatste afsluitdatum voor evaluatie in 2015 is 5 oktober. De evaluatie gebeurde op 26 juni. 10 voorstellen werden aanvaard. The overview of Tier-1 use on page 3 shows a new record since the beginning of the production period: a use of more than 85% of the capacity of the Tier-1 during three consecutive weeks. 4 P.4 VSC Echo Een nieuwe Tier-1 in 2016 A new Tier-1 in 2016 Toen vorige zomer de beslissing werd genomen om de nieuwe Tier-1 bij de KU Leuven onder te brengen was dit meteen ook het startsein van de voorbereidende werken. De aankoop van een systeem van deze omvang moet immers zorgvuldig voorbereid worden. Om tot een goede, realistische aanbesteding te komen moet er een goede kennis zijn van wat er op de markt beschikbaar zal zijn op het moment van de aankoop en van de opties die het meest geschikt zijn voor de noden van de VSC gebruikers. SuperComputing 14, waar alle belangrijke HPC leveranciers aanwezig zijn, was dan ook de plaats om een marktoverzicht te krijgen. De meeste leveranciers hebben na het evenement nog een presentatie gehouden aan de KU Leuven. Technologie moet ten dienste staan van de gebruikers. Het historisch HPC gebruik binnen het VSC geeft ten dele een inzicht in de huidige noden. Maar ook met toekomstig gebruik moet rekening gehouden worden. Om hierover voldoende informatie te verkrijgen werd een bevraging gehouden waarbij VSC gebruikers en andere geïnteresseerden de mogelijkheid hadden om de belangrijke HPC factoren voor hun werk te duiden. Daartoe werd de uitnodiging voor deelname aan de bevraging niet enkel naar alle VSC gebruikers verstuurd maar ook naar de Vlaamse onderzoeksinstellingen en via de leden van de industrial board ook naar de industrie. Er kwamen heel wat antwoorden op de bevraging. 90% van de 177 deelnemers zijn academici, 3% werkt in privé instellingen en de overige komen uit de Vlaamse onderzoeksinstellingen. De academici zijn goed verdeeld over alle universitaire associaties en over de verschillende onderzoeksdomeinen en is een goede weerspiegeling van het gebruik van de VSC infrastructuur. Uit de bevraging bleek dat VSC infrastructuur essentieel is voor hun onderzoek en op regelmatige basis gebruikt wordt. Een belangrijk deel van de onderzoekers beschouwt zichzelf eerder als gebruiker van toepassingssoftware dan als software ontwikkelaar. Dit onderstreept het belang van de opvolging van evoluties in de specifieke wetenschappelijke software en vooral de implicaties naar hardware toe. Uit de bevraging bleek ook dat een goede performantie van individuele nodes belangrijk. Is. Voor gebruikers met grotere parallele jobs met internodecommunicatie is het duidelijk dat een snel netwerk met een korte wachttijd van belang is. Maar op de Tier-1 cluster worden ook jobs uitgevoerd waarbij snelle toegang naar de bestandsopslag belangrijk is. Het is duidelijk dat al deze factoren in goede balans moeten zijn, binnen het beschikbare budget, opdat de nieuwe Tier-1 de brede variëteit van rekenwerk met een goede performantie kan uitvoeren. De volledig operationele beschikbaarheid van de nieuwe Tier-1 is gepland voor oktober Het zijn spannende tijden. We hopen alvast dat de komst van een nieuwe Tier-1 onderzoekers zal inspireren om nieuwe facetten van hun onderzoeksdomein te verkennen. When it was decided last summer to host the next VSC Tier -1 at KU Leuven a number of actions were started in order to carefully plan the purchase of a machine of such a size. First, to have a solid and realistic tender, it is necessary to have a good knowledge about what will be on the market at the time of purchase and which of those systems will best suit the needs of the VSC users. The SuperComputing 14 conference, with all HPC vendors present, was the place to start a market survey. As a follow-up, most vendors conducted an information session at KU Leuven. Second, technology needs to serve the users. Looking at current HPC usage within VSC already provides information, but it does not give the complete picture, future needs must also to be addressed. To accomplish this a survey was organized to give the users and interested parties a chance to have their say. The survey invitation was sent not only to all known VSC users but also to different Flemish research institutes and to industry through the Industrial Board. There was a good response to the survey. 90% of the 177 respondents are academics, 3% works in private companies and the rest comes from research institutes. The academics were nicely spread over the different university associations as well as over all research domains. This is in line with what is observed on the VSC clusters. The survey showed that the VSC infrastructure is essential for the researchers and that it is used on a regular basis. A large part of the VSC users are rather application users than software developers. This underlines the importance to closely follow software evolutions in relation with hardware trends. The survey also revealed that performance of individual compute nodes is important. For the highly parallel jobs with a higher communication workload, network performance is a key component for job performance. But the Tier-1 system also executes jobs for which fast access to file storage is important. It is clear that on a Tier-1 all these factors need to be in balance, within the available budget, in order to serve the broad variety of job types. The fully operational new Tier-1 is planned for fall It certainly are exciting times. We hope that the new Tier-1 will inspire researchers to dream of new possibilities to extend their research.

5 VSC Echo P.5 VSC jaarverslag 2014 VSC annual report 2014 In 2014 is het Vlaams Supercomputer Centrum (VSC) als een samenwerkingsverband tussen de Vlaamse universiteiten en de Herculesstichting op kruissnelheid gekomen. De Vlaamse universiteiten bouwden hun Tier-2 capaciteit verder uit. Het aantal opleidingen over het gebruik van de Tier-1 en de Tier-2 die aangeboden worden aan onderzoekers uit de Vlaamse universiteiten, strategische onderzoekscentra en andere publieke kennisinstellingen en die eveneens toegankelijk zijn voor bedrijven, werd uitgebreid. De VSC Echo, de elektronische nieuwsbrief van het VSC, verspreidt de informatie hierover op ruime schaal. In 2014 werden drie maal aanvragen voor rekentijd op de Tier-1 beoordeeld. In totaal werden nodedagen toegekend aan 36 projecten. Om de noden van de gebruikers in kaart te brengen en de ontwikkelingen te bespreken werd een Gebruikerscommissie Tier-1 opgericht was ook het jaar waarin de samenwerking met bedrijven verder vorm kreeg. De eerste contracten voor het leveren van rekentijd werden afgesloten en er werden contacten gelegd met potentieel geïnteresseerde industriële gebruikers. De Industrial Board speelde een belangrijke rol bij het uittekenen van een strategie naar de bedrijven toe. Zo werden de voordelen van een samenwerking met het VSC duidelijk gemaakt: een professionele ondersteuning bij het gebruik van de complexe infrastructuur, de mogelijkheid tot opleidingen op maat en vooral de inbedding in een academische omgeving. Maar de ontwikkelingen gaan bijzonder snel. Na een grondige selectieprocedure besliste de Herculesstichting eind 2014 om met de KU Leuven een overeenkomst af te sluiten voor de aankoop, de huisvesting en de technische uitbating van de tweede Vlaamse Tier-1 supercomputer. Deze universiteit stelt onder meer een volledig uitgeruste computerzaal ter beschikking. Midden 2016 zal de nieuwe machine in gebruik worden genomen voor de eerste gebruikerstesten. Om de activiteiten van het VSC meer zichtbaarheid te geven, besliste de Raad van Bestuur van de Herculesstichting de realisaties van het VSC te bundelen in een afzonderlijk jaarverslag dat elektronisch beschikbaar is: _Jaarverslag_2014.pdf In 2014, the Flemish Supercomputer Center (VSC) as a partnership between the Flemish universities and the Hercules came up to speed. The Flemish universities increased their Tier-2 capacity. The number of courses on the use of the Tier-1 and Tier-2 offered to researchers from the Flemish universities, strategic research centers, other public research institutions, and companies, was extended. The VSC Echo, the electronic newsletter of the VSC, disseminates this information widely. In 2014, the rating of applications for computing time on the Tier-1 happened three times. In total, 123,000 node days were allocated to 36 projects. To map the needs of the users and to discuss developments a Tier-1 User Committee was established was also the year in which the cooperation with companies took expansion. The first contracts for the delivery of computing time were completed and contacts were made with potentially interested industrial users. The Industrial Board was instrumental in outlining a strategy towards the companies. Thus, the advantages of working with the VSC were made clear: professional support for the use of a complex infrastructure, the possibility of customized training and especially the embedding in an academic environment. But developments are moving very fast. After a thorough selection procedure the Hercules Foundation decided at the end of 2014 to conclude an agreement with the KU Leuven for the purchase, the housing and the technical operation of the second Flemish Tier-1 supercomputer. This university, among others, provides a fully equipped computer room. Mid 2016, the new machine will be available for the first user tests. To give more visibility to the activities of the VSC the Governing Board of the Hercules Foundation decided to bundle the achievements of VSC in a separate annual report which is available electronically: _Jaarverslag_2014.pdf

6 P.6 VSC Echo Zoals elk jaar heeft het VSC een groot aantal opleidingssessies georganiseerd, we zetten er hier twee in de kijker. Specialist Workshop on Scientific Programming (SWSP) De SWSP wordt stilaan traditie, het is een jaarlijks terugkerende reeks van workshops en seminaries gegeven door specialisten in hun domein. Hoewel een aantal sessies een vast onderdeel van het programma vormen, organiseren we toch ook elk jaar een aantal nieuwe workshops om de SWSP aantrekkelijk te houden voor gevorderden. Ook dit jaar werden de workshops over Message Passing Interface (MPI) gegeven door prof. dr. Jan Fostier (UGent) en Introduction to multithreading and OpenMP door dr. Reinhold Bader (LRZ, Garching, Duitsland). Een drietal workshops waren echter nieuw. In november gaf dr. Bader een introductie tot Fortran, een programmeertaal die nog steeds erg relevant is in wetenschappelijk rekenen. In april hadden we dr. Georg Hager te gast (RRZE, Erlangen, Duitsland) die een zeer interessante workshop verzorgde over node-level performance engineering. Dr. Hager heeft jarenlange ervaring met de optimalisatie van wetenschappelijke code, hetgeen heel duidelijk blijkt uit de diepgang van de sessies. Ten slotte gaf dr. Bader nog een sessie over de migratie van Fortran oude stijl naar moderne code. Zoals elk jaar werkt het VSC samen met de doctoral schools van de Vlaamse universiteiten voor het organiseren van de SWSC. Spring School Computational tools for Materials Science Deze lenteschool werd georganiseerd door het Center for Molecular Modeling (CMM) van de Universiteit Gent. Specialisten in het gebruik van diverse software pakketten die nuttig zijn in de context van computationeel materiaalonderzoek deelden hun expertise. Er waren deelnemers van de vijf Vlaamse universiteiten maar ook van buitenlandse instellingen zoals de universiteiten van Maastricht (Nederland), Marmara en Bogadici (Turkije). Na een eerste dag die gewijd was aan een inleiding tot concepten en basisbegrippen relevant voor dit type onderzoek kwamen op de daarop volgende vier dagen achtereenvolgens de pakketten VASP, ABINIT, Gaussian en CP2K aan bod, telkens met hands-on sessies. Voor de omkadering van deze hands-on sessies deed het CMM een beroep op het VSC, dat er voor zorgde dat de nodige software geïnstalleerd was en de nodige rekencapaciteit ter beschikking stond voor de 45 deelnemers. VSC-medewerkers van elk van de universiteiten waren permanent aanwezig voor de nodige ondersteuning bij praktische problemen. Opleidingen in de kijker

7 VSC Echo P.7 Training events in the spotlights As in the previous years, the VSC has organized a number of training activities, two of which we would like to put in the spotlights. Specialist Workshop on Scientific Programming (SWSP) The SWSP is almost growing into a tradition, as a series of seminars and workshops presented by specialists in their domain. A number of these sessions are recurring each year, while others are new so as to engage more advanced participants as well. The workshops Message Passing Interface (MPI) by prof. dr. Jan Fostier (UGent) and Introduction to Multithreaded programming and OpenMP by dr. Reinhold Bader (LRZ, Garching, Germany) are examples of the former. Three workshops were organized for the first time. Introduction to Fortran by dr. Bader in November illustrated nicely that modern Fortran is a very relevant programming language for scientific computing. Node-level Performance Engineering by dr. Georg Hager (RRZE, Erlangen, Germany) was a very interesting session for those who need to optimize code. Dr. Hager has years of experience in this field, as illustrated by the depth and scope of the sessions. Dr. Bader gave a one-day session on Migrating old to modern Fortran Code. The SWPC was organized in collaboration with the various doctoral schools of the Flemish universities. Spring School Computational tools for Materials Science This spring school was organized by the Center for Molecular Modeling (CMM), Ghent University. Specialists in using various software packages relevant in the domain of computational materials science shared their expertise with the participants. Researchers associated with each of the five Flemish universities were present, but there were also international participants from the universities of Maastricht (The Netherlands), Marmara and Bogadici (Turkey). The first day was devoted to an introduction of basic concepts required for working in this field. On each consecutive day, a software package was introduced: VASP, ABINIT, Gaussian, and CP2K. Hands-on sessions helped the participants to familiarize themselves with this software. To organize these hands-on sessions, the CMM collaborated with the VSC that ensured the required software was installed on its systems and that sufficient compute resources were reserved for the 45 participants. VSC staff from each of the universities was at hand to provide support if practical problems arose. This initiative was much appreciated by the participants, and the VSC will be happy to collaborate on future, similar events.

8 P.8 VSC Echo VSC Industriedag De economische impact van High Performance Computing (HPC) wordt elke dag duidelijker zowel in de industrie als in de dienstensector. Indien Vlaanderen zijn competitiviteit wil verbeteren is het zonder meer noodzakelijk dat bedrijven overtuigd worden om intensief gebruik te maken van de mogelijkheden die ICT biedt. Supercomputers zijn hiervan een belangrijke component. Eén van de opdrachten die volgens het HPC-decreet aan het Vlaams Supercomputer Centrum (VSC) toegekend werd, is het informeren van bedrijven en instellingen uit de non-profit sector over de toegevoegde waarde die HPC levert bij het ontwikkelen en optimaliseren van diensten en producten. Een andere opdracht bestaat erin hen te ondersteunen bij het gebruik van deze nieuwe technologie. Op 27 januari 2015 werd de VSC Industry Day georganiseerd. Deze dag werd ingericht om bedrijven de mogelijkheden van HPC uit te leggen en aan de hand van concrete voorbeelden de voordelen op een tastbare manier te illustreren. Sprekers uit buitenlandse supercomputercentra die heel wat ervaring hebben in samenwerken met het bedrijfsleven gaven toelichting. Ook Vlaamse bedrijven illustreerden het belang van HPC. Het volledige programma is beschikbaar op nieuws.php#industry-day. Een honderdtal personen schreven zich in waaronder medewerkers van een twintigtal bedrijven. Zowel grote bedrijven, consultingkantoren, KMO s als spin-offs van Vlaamse universiteiten waren vertegenwoordigd. Tijdens deze bijeenkomst werden heel wat spontane contacten gelegd. Op die manier kwamen de vragen naar boven om meer informatie over het VSC te krijgen en om testen te kunnen uitvoeren op de Tier-1. Aansluitend op dit evenement werden een aantal bedrijven gecontacteerd om de mogelijkheden van HPC en de ondersteuning door het VSC nader toe te lichten. Met de Industrial Board werd ook overlegd welke de meest geschikte aanpak is om contacten te transformeren in gebruikers van VSC-infrastructuren en om de unique selling proposition van het VSC beter kenbaar te maken. VSC Industry day The economic impact of High Performance Computing (HPC) becomes clearer every day in both the industry and the services sector. If Flanders wants to improve its competitiveness, it is absolutely essential that companies be persuaded to make intensive use of the opportunities offered by ICT. Supercomputers are hereof an important component. According to the HPC decree, one of the tasks awarded to the Flemish Supercomputer Center (VSC) is to inform companies and institutions from the non-profit sector about the added value provided by HPC in the development and optimization of services and products. Another task is to support them in using this new technology. The VSC Industry Day was held on January 27, This day was set for companies to explain them the capabilities of HPC and to illustrate its benefits in a tangible way by means of concrete examples. Speakers from European supercomputing centers who have a lot of experience in working with the business community presented their experiences. Flemish companies also illustrated the importance of HPC. The full program is available at About a hundred people signed up including employees of about twenty companies. Both large companies, consulting firms, SMEs and spin-offs of Flemish universities were represented. Many spontaneous contacts were made during this meeting. In this way, requests came up to get more information about VSC and to carry out tests on the Tier-1. Following this event, a number of companies were contacted to explore the possibilities of HPC and to clarify the support by VSC. Within the Industrial Board it was also discussed what the most appropriate approach is to transform "contacts" into "users of the VSC infrastructure" and to better disseminate the unique selling proposition of the VSC.

VUB-VSC cloud klaar om getest te worden Een cloud rekenomgeving kan nieuwe mogelijkheden bieden aan gebruikers die omwille van diverse redenen niet terecht kunnen op de Tier-2 infrastructuren. Voorbeelden daarvan zijn toepassingen die enkel in een Microsoft Windows omgeving kunnen gebruikt worden of toepassingen die een specifieke versie van een Linux distributie vereisen of een complexe configuratie vergen. Een ander voordeel van de cloud is zijn flexibiliteit: aan een bestaande virtuele machine (VM) kan gemakkelijk geheugen of een CPU toegevoegd worden. Het VSC heeft geïnvesteerd in een cloud ontwikkeling aan de Vrije Universiteit Brussel en deze zal binnenkort beschikbaar zijn voor alle leden van het VSC. Vandaag zijn we nog in testfase. Tijdens deze testfase zoeken we uit hoe we het best een VM opstarten, hoe we de beschikbare middelen kunnen verdelen en hoe gemakkelijk het is voor gebruikers om deze omgeving te verkennen. Deze cloud is opgebouwd met het platform OpenNebula. Dat platform heeft enkele standaard VMs klaar om op te starten, maar ook andere besturingssystemen of configuraties kunnen opgezet worden als de software beschikbaar is (bv. met een iso-bestand). Wie zich geroepen voelt om te beta-testen kan zich melden bij Stéphane Gérard (sgerard@vub.ac.be) en Bart Verleye (bverleye@vub.ac.be) VUB-VSC cloud reaches testing phase A cloud computing environment can provide new opportunities for users who for various reasons can not use the Tier-2 infrastructures. Examples are applications that can be used only in a Microsoft Windows environment or applications that require a specific version of a Linux distribution or require a complex configuration. Another advantage of the cloud is its flexibility: memory or a CPU can be added easily to an existing virtual machine (VM). The VSC has invested in a cloud development at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel that will soon be available to all members of the VSC. Today, we are still in testing phase. During this test phase, we will find out how we can best start a VM, how we can we distribute the available resources and how easy it is for users to explore this virtual environmrnt. This cloud is built with the platform OpenNebula. This platform has a few standard VMs ready to start, but other operating systems or configurations can be set up as the software is available (eg. with an iso file). 10 P.10 VSC Echo Een nieuwe VSC website Na verschillende maanden intensief werk wordt de nieuwe VSC website gelanceerd! Tussen de bescheiden start van de VSC webstek in 2008 en de huidige versie in 2015 liggen meerdere stadia waarbij de inhoud stelselmatig uitgebreid werd. Denk maar aan de gebruikersdocumentatie, het overzicht van de VSC opleidingen, de documentatie voor aanvraag van rekentijd op de Tier-1 en een aantal voorbeelden van toepassingen van supercomputing. De tijd was echter gekomen om een nieuwe webstek te bouwen. De opdracht werd gegund aan het Leuvense bedrijf Statik. De informatie die reeds te vinden was op de bestaande website kreeg haar plaats in een opgefrist jasje op de nieuwe website en bijkomende informatie werd toegevoegd. Bijvoorbeeld de status van de verschillende clusters alsook de geplande onderhoudsperiodes is nu beschikbaar na login met een instituutsaccount. Inschrijven voor cursussen kan nu vanaf de website gebeuren. De nieuwe website biedt ook specifieke informatie voor de industrie (hoe kan het VSC helpen) en voor het grote publiek (wat is HPC en hoe beïnvloedt het het alledaagse leven). Belangrijk is dat de website steeds geactualiseerd wordt. Daarvoor zijn niet alleen de Herculesstichting en de VSC coördinatoren verantwoordelijk maar rekenen we ook op de gebruikers. We hopen dat de nieuwe VSC website een echt communicatiemiddel mag worden tussen alle betrokken partijen! A new VSC website After several months of intensive work the new VSC website will be launched! Between the humble beginnings of the VSC website in 2008 and the current version in 2015 lay several stages where the content was systematically expanded. Think of the user documentation, the outline of the VSC training, documentation for application of computing time on the Tier-1 and some examples of applications of supercomputing. But the time had come to build a new website. The contract was awarded to the Leuven-based company Statik. The information that was already available on the existing site found its place in a refreshed way on the new website and additional information was added. For example, the status of the various clusters as well as information about planned maintenance periods is now available after login with an institute account. Registration for courses can now be done from the website. The new website also provides specific information for the industry (how the VSC can help) and for the general public (what is HPC and how it affects everyday life). It is important to update the website regulary. This is not only the responsibility of the Hercules Foundation and the VSC coordinators, we also rely on users. We hope that the new website VSC may be a real communicationtool between all parties involved!
