3 Introductie Sinds haar eerste tentoonstellingen begin jaren negentig (Museum Moderner Kunst, Wenen; Offenes Kulturhaus, Linz; Salzburger Kunstverein) wist Aglaia Konrad aan de term 'architectuurfotografie' een nieuwe dimensie te geven. Zij ontwikkelde haar beelden - foto s van wereldsteden als Peking, Caïro, Chicago of Mexico-Stad - op een translucide folie en plakte deze vervolgens op vensters. Daardoor ontstond een montage waarin twee beelden de foto en de stedelijke impressie met het royale uitzicht - in elkaar overvloeiden en het eenduidige karakter van de plek ondermijnden. Met deze al vroeg toegepaste werkwijze wist Aglaia Konrad niet alleen de gelaagdheid van het stedelijke letterlijk en op een innemende manier te visualiseren maar legde zij ook de basis voor haar latere, vaak monumentale in situ werk dat zij in een gegeven architecturale context integreerde. Dit voor haar werk zo kenmerkend stilistisch principe paste zij toe tijdens een veelvoud van internationale kunstmanifestaties, gaande van Tokio ( Another Continent, Metropolitan Museum of Photography, 1994) tot Kassel ( documenta X, 1997), van Shanghai (biënnale, 2000) tot Venetië (architectuurbiënnale, 2004). Vertegenwoordigt een conventioneel ingelijste foto een soort venster op de wereld, zo vervaagt bij Konrad de afstand tot dat venster waardoor de kijker zichzelf direct in de wereld waant. De drie begrippen afstand, venster en wereld definiëren onmiskenbaar het wezen van haar fotografie. Zo benadert Aglaia Konrad haar motieven met een zekere afstandelijkheid, zelfs nonchalance. Haar foto s - en recent ook films - zijn niet strak geregisseerd en gecomponeerd met het voornemen de ultieme of geïdealiseerde stadsfoto vast te leggen. Ze zijn met de losse hand, al lopende of rijdende door of vliegende over s werelds grootste stedelijke agglomeraties opgenomen. Toch worden al haar verschillende ruimtelijke toepassingen van fotografische beelden van het afgelopen decennium voor het eerst samengebracht. Naar aanleiding van deze tentoonstelling verscheen bij de uitgever Walther König in Keulen in samenwerking met desingel het kunstenaarsboek Iconocity. Met haar werk veroorzaakte Aglaia Konrad in zeker zin een revolutie in de fotografie, althans de presentatievorm daarvan. 2 3

Vanwaar komt het idee van een objectieve openbare ruimte? Daar komen we later op terug. Prefabfaçade, betonbouw, structuralisme of huid rond een skelet. Zo is de wereld van Aglaia Konrad een pregnante indruk van onze wereld, gedroomd in stoutste dromen, gepland in alle denkbare fases, gebouwd in de (harde) realiteit. Beton vormt in die wereld een ongeslepen diamant. De werking van de zwaartekracht is voelbaar, voor beton geldt zeker dat je iets moet willen, de ultieme sculpturale conditie. Bij velen gaat fotografie daar te gemakkelijk aan voorbij. De zwaartekracht lijkt geen optisch fenomeen. De zwaartekracht in de beelden van Konrad lijkt eerder een horizontaal fenomeen door de manier waarop ze haar onderwerp voorbij scheert. Interessant is vooral het belang van de tegenspraak in de stedenbouwkundige planning voor de fotografie van Aglaia Konrad; is tegenspraak planbaar? De stad is de ultieme gemeenschap, de tastbare uitdrukking van een economische regio (4) en wat er in deze beelden wordt samengebracht is de visuele neerslag van die uitdrukking. De categorieën waarin deze neerslag in haar werk worden onderverdeeld is van een droogkomische en zelfobserverende eenvoud. URBAN CREATURES: een schier eindeloze serie beelden van individuele gebouwen door Aglaia Konrad gefotografeerd in hun stedelijke omgeving. De opmerkelijkheid ten opzichte van de objecten wordt over het algemeen bepaald door een karakteristieke verhouding van omgeving, volume, gevel. In de Urban Creatures wordt, het meest van al, de architectuur zelf ornament. Soms echter even geen Urban Creatures. De afstand toont geen object als creature. De hele twintigste-eeuwse architectuurdiscussie wordt gedomineerd door de strijd voor of tegen het ornament. De lange strijd ter verwerping van het ornament door de modernisten is strategisch en geheel verwacht verworpen door de postmodernen van de jaren tachtig. China is echter de bakermat van zowel het fast-foodprincipe als van het gedachteloze ornament; volkomen vanzelfsprekend hangen draken, lampions of flarden typografie op plaatsen die zelfs niet meer verwijzen naar een oorspronkelijke plaats van het ornament. Een alternatief zou zijn: niet plaatsen: dat zou leegte tot gevolg hebben. Die is echter ongewenst. De epoche van non-architectuur als groeimiddel, waarbij het ene volume gebreid wordt aan het andere, alleen als de vraag er is, heeft in de hedendaagse stad zijn langste tijd gehad.
