1 TV als mogelijkheid Jan Dibbets Weert (NL), 1941 Woont en werkt in Amsterdam (NL) TV as a Fireplace, 1969 Video, televisie (kleur, geluid), Schenking kunstenaar, 1979 Jan Dibbets maakte Tv as a Fireplace in opdracht van tv-galeriehouder Gerry Schum, in Het werk werd datzelfde jaar uitgezonden, in de laatste week van december. De eerste nacht werden de houtblokken aangestoken en in de daaropvolgende nachten zagen de kijkers hoe het vuur langzaam aanwakkerde, om vervolgens weer te doven tot gloeiende kooltjes overbleven. Het werk van Dibbets maakt ons ervan bewust dat in die tijd de kijkkast het haardvuur als centrale plek in het huishouden had vervangen. Langer geleden zaten de gezinsleden voor de haard en amuseerden ze zich door elkaar verhalen te vertellen. Door beelden van vuur uit te zenden, voerde Dibbets de passief tv-kijkende gezinnen op de bank in de huiskamer terug naar het pre-televisietijdperk. TV as a Fireplace werd uitgezonden in kleur, maar omdat in de jaren 60 bijna niemand een kleurentelevisie bezat, zagen de meeste kijkers het werk in zwart-wit. When the work was screened over the course of a week in December of that year, the first program featured a fireplace containing wooden logs that were lit; over the subsequent evenings, viewers watched as the flames grew in intensity before slowly fading and finally dying out completely, leaving a pile of glowing embers. In the past, families gathered around the open hearth, entertaining each other by telling stories, but Dibbets s work makes us aware that at the time, television had replaced the fireplace as the center of the home. By broadcasting images of an open fire, Dibbets transported TV-watching families, passively sitting in their living rooms in front of the screen, back to another era. TV as a Fireplace was aired in color but as few people owned a color television during the 1960s, most viewers would have seen it in black-and-white.

De nevel die op het scherm verschijnt, verdoezelt het gezicht van de kunstenaar die ons strak blijft aankijken totdat alle wasem opgetrokken is. Boezems handeling heft de transparantie van het medium televisie op. Het beslagen glas vormt een fysieke scheiding tussen ons en de wereld erachter. Hoe overtuigend en realistisch de tv-beelden ook zijn, de wereld van de televisie zal de wereld de kijker nooit werkelijk bereiken. Deze film produceerde de NOS voor een programma naar voorbeeld van de Fernsehgalerie van Gerry Schum. In een serie van drie uitzendingen, die werd uitgezonden onder de titel Beeldende kunstenaars maken televisie, kregen behalve Marinus Boezem Stanley Brouwn, Jan Dibbets, Ger van Elk en Peter Struycken de gelegenheid om op primetime moeilijke conceptuele kunst te tonen. De versie van Het beademen van de beeldbuis die hier te zien is, het ruwe materiaal voor de uitzending van op 21 februari 1971, werd aan het museum geschonken door de cameraman van het programma, Joes Odufré. TV as opportunity Marinus Boezem Leerdam (NL), 1934 Lives and works in Middelburg (NL) Breathing on the picture tube, 1971 Video (color w. sound), 3 26 Gift of Joes Odufré, 1987 Inhalating deeply and exhaling so that his breath clouds over the screen of the television, Marinus Boezem seems to gaze at us unwaveringly as the resulting fog appearing on the glass blurrily obscures his features and then vanishes. Boezem s action interferes with the supposed transparency of the medium of television. Misted-over, the glass acts as a physical barrier between the viewer and the world of television. His work serves as a reminder that, however convincing and realistic TV images may be, they are ultimately separate from the world of the viewer. The Dutch broadcasting company NOS produced this film for a program that followed the example of Fernsehgalerie by Gerry Schum. In a series of three broadcasts that aired under the title Visual artists make television, Marinus Boezem, Stanley Brouwn, Jan Dibbets, Ger van Elk and Peter Struycken were given an opportunity to present difficult conceptual art on prime-time television. The version of Breathing on the picture tube shown here was raw material edited for broadcast on February 21, 1971, and was donated to the museum by the cameraman who worked on the program, Joes Odufré.

Gerry Schum maakte in 1969 de film Land Art, over het werk van Land art-kunstenaars, die werd uitgezonden op de Duitse televisie. Ter aankondiging ontwierp Schum dit affiche met stills uit de film. Een bekender werk van Schum is wellicht het televisieprogramma Identifications. Fernsehausstellung II. Net als Land Art werd ook deze film uitgezonden op de Duitse televisie. Een twintigtal kunstenaars, onder wie Mario Merz, Joseph Beuys, Ger van Elk en Stanley Brouwn droeg aan dit programma bij met een registratie van een korte performance. Anders dan het Nederlandse VARA-programma Signalement bevat Identifications geen ironisch commentaar bij de kunstwerken. De meeste bijdragen volgen de principes van de Arte Povera ( arme kunst ), een stroming waarbinnen het kunstwerk als product niet telde. In 1969, Gerry Schum made the film Land Art, about the work of artists associated with the Land Art movement. To promote the film, which was aired on German television, Schum designed this poster, using stills taken from it. Schum is perhaps better known for his television program Identifications: Fernsehausstellung II, which, like Land Art, was also screened on German television. Twenty artists including Joseph Beuys, Stanley Brouwn, Ger van Elk and Mario Merz were featured with a registration of a short performance. While Signalement, a similar program featuring artists produced by the Dutch broadcasting company VARA, included an ironic commentary, Identifications did not. All contributions show a kinship to the principles of Arte Povera ( poor art ), a movement that placed no value on the artwork as product. The artists used television purely as a platform to communicate their ideas.

Schippers en Willem de Ridder een bijdrage aan het kunstprogramma Signalement van de VARA. Daarin introduceren de kunstenaars eigentijdse stromingen zoals Arte Povera, Zero, de Nul-beweging en Fluxus, een en ander voorzien van ironisch commentaar. Schippers en De Ridder kozen bij voorkeur kunststromingen met nadruk op het gebruik van alledaagse materialen of voorwerpen. Schippers zelf giet onder overweldigende belangstelling van de plaatselijke bevolking een flesje limonadegazeuse leeg in de zee bij Petten. En we maken kennis met De Ridders papieren konstellaties (pk s), die we de vorm van een reusachtige prop onder politie-escorte door Amsterdam zien rijden. De Ridder en Schippers zijn enerzijds de auteurs van het programma, anderzijds doen zij verslag van werk door andere kunstenaars. Signalement is tegelijkertijd televisie over kunst en televisie als kunst. Schippers beschouwde televisie niet voor niets als de grootste galerie van Nederland. Via dit massamedium kon kunst doordringen in het dagelijks leven van de kijker. TV as opportunity Wim T. Schippers produced Signalement, an art program aired by the Dutch broadcasting corporation VARA. With their customary dry wit, the two artists talk about contemporary art movements such as Arte Povera, Zero and Fluxus as if they were hosting a news program. De Ridder and Schippers discuss artistic trends that emphasize using common objects and materials. In one scene, Schippers empties a bottle of lemonade into the sea near the Dutch village Petten, watched by local residents. Later on, viewers are introduced to De Ridder s paper constellations (spelled konstellaties in seventies Dutch language and referred to as pk s), one of which appears as a gigantic paper confection driving through Amsterdam, escorted by police motorcycles. In presenting their own work, De Ridder and Schippers also present the work of other artists. In this way, Signalement is simultaneously television as art and television about art. Schippers once rightly observed that television is the largest art gallery in the Netherlands. Through the mass medium of television, art is able to filter through into the ordinary lives of viewers.

Zodoende smeert de kunstenaar gekleurde gels op de cameralens, projecteert hij gekleurde dia s op de muur en draait aan televisieknoppen om de kleuren op het beeldscherm aan te passen. R-G-B heeft de opzet van een puur kleuronderzoek, maar het is tevens een zelfportret, waarin de kunstenaar zijn eigen relatie tot het verschijnsel video verkent. Campus zelf beschouwde dit werk als het onderzoek van een performer naar het kleurensysteem waarin hij zelf gevangen zit, zoals een gevangene die de grenzen van zijn cel aftast. De invloed van videotechnologie op de menselijke perceptie en identiteit stond vanaf 1973 centraal in diverse werken van Campus. TV as color bar Peter Campus New York, NY (US), 1937 Lives and works in New York, NY (US) R-G-B, 1974 Video projection (color, sound), Acquired in 1982 In the video performance R-G-B Peter Campus explores and manipulates video s electronic color system. He places colored gels onto the camera lens, projects colored slides onto the wall and adjusts the television s color switches to play with the colors of the monitor. R-G-B is structured along the lines of a pure color study, and yet the piece is also a self portrait in which the artist investigates his relationship with the medium of video. Campus himself considered this work the exploration by a performer of the color system in which he is trapped, much like a prisoner pacing off his cell. The impact of video technology on human perception and identity was a central concern in Campus work as early as 1973.

6 TV als testbeeld General Idea Groep opgericht in Toronto (CA), actief Test Tube, 1979 Video (kleur, geluid), Verworven in 1981 Centraal in Test Tube staat het decor van de Color Bar Lounge: een studio annex cocktailbar waar het Canadese kunstenaarscollectief General Idea als in een tv-programma de rol van de media op de kunstwereld becommentarieert. Test Tube ontstond tijdens een verblijf in kunstencentrum De Appel in Amsterdam. De gekleurde banen van het decor refereren aan het testbeeld (Engels: color bar ) van de kleurentelevisie. De video zelf is een soap opera over een geïsoleerde kunstenaar, worstelend met de vraag hoe haar werk aan de man te brengen. De humoristische blaséhouding van de presentatoren, maar ook de parodiërende reclames voor de gekleurde cocktails van de Color Bar Lounge, maakt de toon van deze scherpzinnige parodie op de kunstwereld extra ironisch. Zontal: Wij beschouwen de Color Bar graag als een soort cultureel laboratorium, waar we kunnen experimenteren met nieuwe culturele cocktails en die opdienen aan onze vrienden. Het collectief hanteert televisie als een eigen test tube, een experimentele omgeving om kunst met anderen te delen. In de vitrine is een aantal edities te zien van het roemruchte FILE Megazine, dat het collectief uitgaf tussen 1972 en Ondersteund door een uitgesproken grafische vormgeving bespreekt én parodieert dit tijdschrift de eigentijdse kunst en populaire cultuur met eenzelfde scherpzinnigheid in woord als in beeld. TV as color bar General Idea Group founded in Toronto (CA), active Test Tube, 1979 Video (color, sound), Acquired in 1981 A key element of Test Tube, a video conceived as a television program, is the Color Bar Lounge. Through this cocktail-barcum-studio, Canadian media-based artist collective General Idea commented on the role of the media in the artworld. Test Tube was produced during a residency at the Amsterdam arts centre De Appel. The color bar refers to the test pattern used in television, while the video itself is a soap opera about an artist struggling to establish her career. The tongue-incheek humor of the presenters, as well as spoof commercials for Color Bar Lounge cocktails, adds to the irony of this perceptive and timely artworld parody. As Zontal explained: We like to think of the Color Bar as a sort of a cultural laboratorium, where we can experiment with new cultural mixes, and serve them up for our friends. General Idea used television as its own test tube, an experimental format with which to share art with people. The cabinet holds a selection of issues of the acclaimed FILE Megazine published by the collective between 1972 and With its colorful, zany design the magazine commented on and parodied contemporary art and pop culture in equally sharp-minded visuals and texts.

7 TV als testbeeld Raul Marroquin Bogotá (CO), 1948 Woont en werkt in Amsterdam (NL) R.G.B, 1989 Televisie (z-w), papier, kunststof Verworven in 1991 R.G.B bestaat uit een kleine zwart-wit televisie waarvan het beeldscherm is beplakt met rode, groene en blauwe stickers. De titel verwijst naar de beeldopbouw van een kleurentelevisie in rood, blauw en groen licht. De stickers geven de ruis op het scherm letterlijk kleur. Deze grofstoffelijke transformatie van zwart-wit naar kleur is op te vatten als een demystificatie van de voortdurende drang tot innovatie van de televisie. Deze kritiek is in meer werken van Raul Marroquin te herkennen. In 1980 organiseerde de kunstenaar bijvoorbeeld de First World TV Convention, een evenement waarbij hij televisietoestellen met elkaar liet communiceren in een geregisseerde conferentie. Als kunstenaar en mediacriticus publiceert Marroquin regelmatig in tijdschriften over de relatie tussen kunst en technologie. Zo maakte hij tussen 1971 en 1978 het tijdschrift Fandangos, met daarin artikelen over actuele ontwikkelingen binnen de videokunst. Een selectie exemplaren van dit invloedrijke tijdschrift is in de vitrine te zien. The title refers to the fact that red, green and blue light combine to produce images on a color television. The stickers transform the empty screen into a collage of color. The crude conversion of the television from black-and-white to color can be read as a critique of the demand for innovation in and through television, a view expressed in Marroquin s other works. In 1980, for instance, the artist organized the First World TV Convention, an event in which he instigated a conversation among television sets along the lines of a moderated conference. As artist and media critic, Marroquin s writings on the relationship between art and technology regularly appear in print. Between 1971 and 1978, he edited a magazine titled Fandangos that featured articles on video art. Issues of this influential magazine are presented in the display cabinet.

Het is een zelfportret, waarbij de handen een kritische metafoor zijn voor de mythische en scheppende kracht van de kunstenaar. Door het eigenaardige camerastandpunt en de wisselende kleuren van het beeld, gaat van deze alledaagse handeling een biologerende werking uit. De kleurenafwisseling in Washing Hands Abnormal doet sterk denken aan het kleurenspel in het videowerk R-G-B van Peter Campus, elders in deze tentoonstelling: eveneens een kritisch zelfportret waarin de kunstenaar zijn relatie tot het medium video onderzoekt. Bruce Nauman is vooral bekend vanwege zijn video per - form ances uit de jaren 70, waarin hij zijn lichaam centraal stelt in geïmproviseerde en herhalende handelingen. Vanaf de jaren 80 maakt hij sterk geënsceneerde video-installaties met acteurs in toneelachtige settings. Washing Hands Abnormal is te beschouwen als een combinatie van deze twee werk vormen, met zowel een herhalende handeling als een strakke regie. Hands often figure in Bruce Nauman s work as a metaphor for the mythical and creative potency of the artist. In Washing Hands Abnormal, the unusual positioning of the camera and the changing colors of the images make the everyday ritual especially compelling. Its chromatic transitions recall the manipulations of color in Peter Campus s video R-G-B (1974) a self-portrait in which the artist critically explores his relationship with video technology. This work relates to Nauman s early performative videos of the late 1960s and 70s, in which his body is the focus of improvised and/or repetitive acts. During the 1980s, Nauman s video installations became more explicitly political and more colorful, often featuring actors in costume as clowns. Washing Hands Abnormal extends these two approaches, as a tightly directed sequence that concentrates on a single action compulsively repeated.

De razendsnelle opeenvolging van beelden en de grote energie in haar werk versterken de identiteit van het televisiemedium als hypnotiserende verleider. Door de montage te benadrukken, verslaat Birnbaum de commerciële televisie met zijn eigen wapens. In Pop-Pop-Video: General Hospital /Olympic Women Speed Skaters toont Birnbaum een van de belangrijkste tvevenementen: de Olympische spelen. Daarnaast verschijnen fragmenten uit een van s werelds meest populaire soaps: General Hospital. Het paar uit de soap probeert begrip voor elkaar op te brengen, maar hun dialoog wordt voortdurend onderbroken. De Olympische schaatsers halen nooit de eindstreep en belanden telkens opnieuw aan de start. De combinatie van frustratie en krachtinspanning met de van te voren opgenomen discodreun brengt de twee televisieprogramma s samen in een schijnbaar eindeloze loop van televisiemomenten, waarin niets ooit wordt afgerond. The rapid succession of images and prodigious energy that fills her work reinforce the perception that, as a communication medium, television is a hypnotic seducer. By emphasizing the montage, Birnbaum uses the weapons of commercial television to beat it at its own game. In Pop-Pop-Video: General Hospital /Olympic Women Speed Skaters, Birnbaum showcases one of television s most iconic events, the Olympic Games, alongside fragments from one of the world s most popular soap operas, General Hospital. In the soap opera, a couple are trying to understand each other, but their dialogue is constantly interrupted. Similarly, Olympic skaters keep finding themselves back on the starting line, apparently never making it to the finish. The frustration and sheer physical effort evident in the two incomplete sequences is combined with a pre-recorded disco beat, melding the two television programs into a seemingly never-ending loop in which nothing ever reaches resolution.

Met het blootleggen van deze stereotypen stelt zij vanuit feministisch oogpunt de overdreven hoge eisen aan de kaak die de Westerse cultuur aan vrouwen stelt. Although the original episodes of Wonder Woman last approximately an hour, minus commercial breaks, Birnbaum reduces a selection of them to six-minute sequences. Distilling the original footage through fragmentation and repetition, Birnbaum presents the protagonist s metamorphosis from one female stereotype, the secretary, to another, Wonder Woman. Beyond simply deconstructing stereotypes, however, Wonder Woman conveys a strident feminist message regarding the overblown expectations of women in western culture.

11 TV als sculptuur Leendert Janzée Gouda (NL), 1940 Amsterdam (NL), 1972 Zuil, 1968 hout, kunststof, behang, gemodificeerde televisie (z-w, geen geluid) Verworven in 1968 Zuil, van de Nederlandse beeldhouwer Leendert Janzée, is de vroegste televisiesculptuur uit de collectie van het Stedelijk Museum misschien wel de vroegste Nederlandse televisiesculptuur ooit. In dit werk maakt Janzée gebruik van de technische werking van een televisie. De beeldbuis van een televisie toont plaatjes door het uitgestuurde signaal verticaal en horizontaal op te rekken: dit proces heet verticale en horizontale afbuiging. Janzée zette de verticale afbuiging op nul, zodat het beeld samengeperst blijft tot een horizontale streep. Deze beeldlijn kan nu gemanipuleerd worden door de verticale afbuiging te activeren via de microfoon in de zuil. Hoe harder het geluid, hoe verder de streep verticaal uitslaat. De gevoeligheid van dit signaal is in te regelen met de twee draaiknoppen op de zuil. Janzée s sculptuur is te vergelijken met vroege werken van Nam June Paik, waarin deze met magneten televisiebeelden manipuleert. Ook Janzée lijkt kritiek te uiten op het onvermogen van de kijker om een interactie aan te gaan met het massamedium televisie. Door de technische eigenschappen te manipuleren, biedt de kunstenaar gelegenheid om het voorgeschotelde beeld wél naar eigen hand zetten. De techniek van Zuil is zeer kwetsbaar en de inmiddels zeldzame beeldbuis functioneert helaas sinds kort niet meer. Er wordt nu gezocht naar een vervangend exemplaar. TV as sculpture Leendert Janzée 1940, Gouda (NL) 1972, Amsterdam (NL) Plinth, 1968 Wood, plastic, wallpaper, modified television (b/w, silent) Acquired in 1968 Plinth, by Dutch sculptor Leendert Janzée, is the earliest television sculpture in the collection of the Stedelijk Museum and is perhaps the first Dutch television sculpture. In this piece, Janzée exploits the way that televisions with cathode-ray tubes work: images are produced by stretching the transmitted signal vertically and horizontally in a process referred to as vertical and horizontal bending. Janzée set the vertical bend to zero, which compresses the picture into a horizontal band. This visual line can be manipulated by activating the vertical curve using the microphone incorporated into the plinth. The louder the sound, the more strongly the vertical extension of the line. The sensitivity of the sound signal can be modified by turning the two knobs built into the plinth. Janzée s sculpture can be compared to the early work of Nam June Paik, who used magnets to manipulate television images. The work also calls attention to the role of the viewer in particular, her or his lack of ability to interact with television as a mass medium. By manipulating its technical features, Janzée offers the viewer a means of affecting the images that are presented, anticipating present-day issues of interactivity. The technology used in Plinth is extremely delicate and the now rare the cathode-ray tube (CRT) recently broke down. Our restorers are now searching for a replacement. Een camera filmt het antieke beeld, zodat dit live op het televisiescherm te zien is. Op die manier is sprake van een gesloten circuit, waarin heden en verleden maar ook Oosterse transcendentie en Westerse technologie elkaar lijken aan te staren in eeuwigdurende contemplatie. Deze rust wordt alleen verstoord als bezoekers binnen het bereik van de camera lopen en eveneens in beeld verschijnen. Nam June Paik stelt in TV-Buddha vraagtekens bij het vermogen van de massamedia tot zelfbeschouwing. Ook raakt hij aan de essentie van het fenomeen televisie. Hoe verhoudt het medium zich tot de toeschouwer? Is deze gedoemd tot passief toekijken of is participatie echt mogelijk? Toen Nam June Paik TV-Buddha voor het eerst exposeerde, tijdens de tentoonstelling Projekt 74 in Keulen, nam de kunstenaar zelf de plaats van het Boeddhabeeld in. Daarmee suggereerde hij dat de tegenstelling transcendentietechnologie ook in hemzelf aanwezig is. Filmed in real time by a small video camera, the antique statue appears on the TV screen, such that the Buddha seems to watch his videotaped image on the television opposite. Past and present and Eastern transcendentalism and Western technology now appear to gaze upon each other in eternal contemplation. All that disrupts this meditation is the encroachment of visitors into the picture as they walk into the camera s range. In TV-Buddha, Nam June Paik questions the capacity of television for self-reflection, as well as its very nature. What is television s relationship with the viewer? Is the viewer fated to be a passive spectator, or can he or she actively participate? When Paik first exhibited TV-Buddha at the Project 74 exhibition in Cologne, the artist took the statue s place, suggesting that the contradistinction between transcendentalism and technology, as well as between subject and object, is also present within himself.
