Our design in steel is unique and we were told the material was too difficult and too expensive to work with. The result speaks for itself. Nu gaat hij de stad in met het merk Urbanista. BRANDEXPEDITION Martijn Arets reist in een VW-bus van Camper Experience door Europa op zoek naar de oorsprong van aansprekende merken. Elke week doet hij in De Pers verslag. Martijn Arets... STOCKHOLM Annonser löpande: Rodeo Annonser löpande: Rodeo NYHET! Begin 2000 was daar opeens de populaire Zweedse oerfiets Kronan die het straatbeeld van de grote steden domineerde. Een paar jaar later rommelde het achter de schermen van het bedrijf en verdween het merk van het toneel. Nu lanceert Kronan-oprichter Johan Wahlbäck (40) een nieuw merk: Urbanista. In Stockholm sprak ik hem over zijn ervaringen en dromen. Toen ik na mijn militaire dienst ging studeren kocht ik een oude fiets van het leger. Mijn vrienden reageerden positief op mijn fiets en dat bracht mij op een idee. Ik belde het lokale regiment en wat bleek: daar zaten ze met 200 van deze fietsen in hun maag. Ik besloot de gok te wagen en kocht de hele partij op. Met een lokaal pompstation maakte ik een Varför släpa på tunga kassar när du är ute och shoppar? Med Dramaten New York från deal: in ruil voor een fiets mocht ik hun schuur voor een week lenen. Na Urbanista handlar du alltid med stil. Även perfekt för båten och lantstället. In deze periode werd ik DN.SE/DNGALLERIAN, verliefd op deze fiets. Ik had daarvoor ELLER RING OSS DIREKT eigenlijk nooit gefietst, maar ontdekpå te dat het een snel en gezond vervoersmiddel was. Wat mij het meest in de fiets aansprak was de eenvoud, de betrouwbaarheid en de kwaliteit. Functioneel en good looking. En daarbuiten was het een goedkope fiets. Het succes smaakte naar meer. Van het legermuseum kreeg ik de ori- Johan Wahlbäck hoopt met zijn merk Urbanista-spullen alsnog de wereld van stedelingen te veroveren. Facts - Johan was 26 toen hij met Kronan begon. - Kronan verwijst direct naar het Zweedse leger, de Kroon. - Het originele ontwerp van Kronan stamt uit Met het label made on earth wil Urbanista uitdragen dat het een grenzeloos merk is. - In september 2010 wordt Urbanista in Nederland gelanceerd. ginele bouwtekeningen van de fiets. Samen met een vriend, die meer verstand had van techniek, vonden we een fabriek in Taiwan die de fiets wilde produceren. Dat ging niet zonder slag of stoot: veel fabrieken namen ons niet serieus toen we met tekeningen van een model uit 1939 aankwamen. Door de fiets alleen via mailorder en online aan te bieden haalde ik in één klap de verkoopprijs met 50 procent omlaag. Zo was ik mijn concurrenten gelijk een flinke stap voor. In zes jaar tijd verkochten we Kronan-fietsen, voornamelijk in Zweden, Denemarken en Nederland. Mijn droom was om onder de vlag van Kronan meer producten op de markt te brengen, dus bracht ik een investeerder in voor het nodige kapitaal. Dit was mijn grootste fout ooit. Hij bleek een wolf in schaapskleren en al snel ging hij als een tiran door het bedrijf. Ik stond machteloos aan de zijlijn. Uiteindelijk gooide ik de handdoek in de ring en verkocht ik ook mijn laatste aandelen aan hem. Boodschappentrolley Uiteindelijk heb ik in 2009 samen met een aantal partners het merk Urbanista opgezet. Met Urbanista wil ik producten uitbrengen die het leven van stadsmensen makkelijker en leuker maken. Om te beginnen brengen we dit seizoen de Urbanista vouwfiets, boodschappentrolley en hoofdtelefoon uit. Door het karakter van het merk zijn de mogelijkheden eindeloos; van vakantie tot mobiele telefoons. Dat geeft mij de ruimte om de komende jaren oneindig veel nieuwe producten op de markt te brengen. Onder de vlag van Kronan had dat nooit gekund, de fiets bepaalde te veel het beeld van het merk. Achteraf gezien mag ik dus niet klagen dat het zo is gelopen. 1 5 ONGEBAANDE PADEN HANS CROOIJMANS... Boeren bij Russische kartonmagnaat T rots leidt Anatoli Stainberg ons rond in zijn kolossale kartonfabriek in het dorpje Koevsjinov, 280 kilometer ten noorden van Moskou. Afgelopen voorjaar kocht hij nog enkele hypermoderne Duitse machines. Kostte me 20 miljoen euro, zegt de fabrikant die tien jaar geleden zijn cementfabriek in het Siberische Irkoetsk voor onbeschrijflijk veel geld aan miljardair Oleg Deripaska verkocht. Stainberg verhaalt over de historie van het bedrijf, dat stamt uit de tijd van de tsaren. Na de Russische revolutie wist de heldhaftige dochter van de oprichter tot in de jaren dertig te voorkomen dat de communisten de fabriek nationaliseerden. Uiteraard hebben die lui er daarna toch een puinhoop van gemaakt. Vijf jaar geleden tikte Stainberg de toen zwaar verliesgevende fabriek voor een luttel bedrag op de kop, inclusief een boerderij. De enige voorwaarde van de autoriteiten was dat ik een paar duizend mensen aan het werk houd en de boel niet verwaarloos. De kartonbusiness loopt als een tierelier; het probleem is de boerderij. Meer dan 80 procent van Stainbergs vijfduizend hectaren landbouwgrond ligt braak. In de loodsen vallen sleetse tractors en machines van ellende uit elkaar. Twee van de drie koeienstallen zijn leeg en verlaten. De ooit meer dan stuks omvattende veestapel slonk tot welgeteld 74 koeien en kalveren. Wat raadt u me aan?, vraagt Stainberg. Nederlanders hebben een goede agrarische reputatie, daarom heeft Koevsjonov ons gehaald. Van de grond af opnieuw beginnen, is het advies. Alleen, in de buurt van Tver staat geen grote melkfabriek. Personeel met agrarische kennis is er niet te vinden. En een nieuwe megaboerderij kost kapitalen. Hoeveel dan?, vraagt Stainberg. Tja, al gauw twintig miljoen euro, overdrijven we.
