A broad scope of disciplines and programmes covers almost anything within the field of applied and fine arts. The curriculum offers a healthy balance between studio practice and supporting (art) theory and drawing classes. This will help you develop your own distinctive artistic practice. ACADEMISCH ÉN VEELZIJDIG Wij bieden een academische bachelor- en masteropleiding in de beeldende kunsten aan. Binnen deze opleiding hebben we een ruime keuze aan afstudeerrichtingen, gaande van vrije kunsten tot meer toegepaste richtingen. Ondersteund door theoretische vakken, tekenen en waarneming werk je in al deze richtingen aan het ontwikkelen van een persoonlijke artistieke praktijk. 4 I L J K M PRACTICE IN THEORY, THEORY IN PRACTICE Art practice and theory became more and more interwoven during the previous century. At the Antwerp Academy reflecting on art and practicing art always go hand in hand. Theory classes offer you a critical and contemporary perspective on art practice. Art history, art philosophy and research methodology are part of framework of tools that help you articulate your autonomous practice as an artist. Your work during the graduate year will culminate in a master s degree project. A team of artists, theorists and visiting lecturers will provide a series of master classes. These master classes will enable you to explore the boundaries of your preferred medium, but also to interact with students from other disciplines. In de master werk je autonoom aan een artistiek afstudeerproject, waarbij je theoretische bagage en artistieke vaardigheden van pas komen. In verschillende masterclasses krijg je, onder leiding van artistieke onderzoekers en (gast) docenten, de mogelijkheid om met studenten uit verschillende disciplines samen te werken. INTERNATIONALE UITSTRALING De Koninklijke Academie Antwerpen heeft een internationale reputatie uitgebouwd en is ook een internationale ontmoetings- en werkplek geworden. De bruisende campus huisvest studenten van ruim 40 verschillende nationaliteiten. We bieden voor elke afstudeerrichting ook een volledig Engelstalige opleiding aan: Master in Visual Arts. De Academie werkt samen met meer dan 45 opleidingen in Europa en daarbuiten. Studiereizen, internationale projecten en Erasmusuitwisselingen bieden de mogelijkheid tot het opdoen van buitenlandse ervaringen. STUDEREN, AFSTUDEREN EN WAT DAN? Tijdens je studies kan je deelnemen aan verschillende tentoonstellingen, shows en performances en leer je de knepen van het presenteren. Aan het einde van de rit studeer je af met een artistiek masterproject. Dit project wordt op professionele wijze getoond in één van de prachtige ruimtes binnen de Academie of zelfs daarbuiten. Daardoor krijgt het publiek de kans om met je werk kennis te maken. Van dan af kan je je profileren als zelfstandig kunstenaar of ontwerper

5 N O INTERNATIONALISATION The Antwerp Academy established a firm international reputation since the 18th century. It became a multicultural work and meeting space for students and teaching staff from over 40 different nationalities. We also offer a complete English master programme in Visual Arts, which is available in every course. The Academy works in close collaboration with more than 45 institutions in and outside Europe. Internationalisation at home is one thing. As a student you will be able to discover international experiences through Erasmus mobility, study trips and workshops abroad. Zodra je je bachelordiploma in handen hebt, kun je ook al starten aan de specifieke lerarenopleiding. Je verwerft dan didactische vaardigheden en loopt stage in alle onderwijsvormen en -niveaus én in de kunsteducatieve sector. Eenmaal je over het masterdiploma beschikt, kun je daarna aan de slag als lesgever beeldende kunsten of als kunsteducatief medewerker. Voor anderen vormt het doctoraat in de kunsten een aantrekkelijke piste. ONDERZOEK IN DE KUNSTEN De Academie is niet alleen een plaats voor studie en creatie, maar ook voor doelgericht onderzoek in de kunsten. Verschillende doctoraten in de kunsten getuigen daarvan. Er werden al verschillende doctoraten in de kunsten uitgereikt. De diverse artistieke onderzoeksprojecten overstijgen de louter disciplinaire invalshoek en bieden ruimte aan kritische reflectie op de artistieke praktijk. Het uitgebreide aanbod van onderzoeksgerichte gastcolleges, workshops, masterclasses en onderzoeksdagen draagt bij tot de ontwikkeling van de onderzoekscompetenties van alle studenten. STUDYING, GRADUATION AND WHAT S NEXT? During your studies you have the opportunity to assist and participate in exhibitions, shows and performances. These learning experiences will refine your presentation skills. At the end of your journey at the Academy, you will present your master s degree project. The degree projects will be shown in one of the several exhibition spaces in or outside the campus. This is a unique opportunity for the general public to become acquainted with your work. From then on, it s up to you to position yourself as an artist or designer. As soon as you have your bachelor of honours degree and when you have the language skills, you are able to enroll the dedicated teacher s training programme. This special programme (in Dutch) enables you to develop didactic skills through seminars and internships in all levels of primary, secondary and alternative educational levels, as well as the expanding cultural and educational sector. Once you are in the possession of your master s degree and the teaching license you are well equipped to work as an art teacher or as an educational employee. But there s also the possibility of entering the doctoral programme. RESEARCH IN ARTS Artistic research at the Antwerp Academy has become one of the more recent challenges. The growing interest and importance in research, has resulted in several artistic doctorates (or Phd s) and research projects. Most of these projects challenge and transcend the more medium specific approach as they invite to even more indepth reflection on your own artistic practice. Research funding helped us to invest in research based seminars, workshops, lectures and symposia. Attending these classes will strengthen your research skills and help you to articulate research questions and proposals

6 VRIJE KUNSTEN FINE ARTS: PAINTING The painting course balances between pictorial proficiency and personal artistic experience. Taking account of the rich tradition of painting, the student is invited to develop his or her personal pictorial language. The studio work in the first and second year Bachelor is based chiefly on working from observation: still life, figure, portrait and landscape. This study allows for various points of reference with old and recent masters. It also forms the necessary reference-bank from (or against) which the student can discover and develop his or her plastic language. Complimentary to this there is also a growing concern for the sociocultural context of art. The image-bombardment that we, as it were, daily undergo needs to be filtered, absorbed and and reworked into relevant images for use within the painting praxis. SCHILDERKUNST PAINTING FINE ARTS ATELIER SCHILDERKUNST 3BA VRIJE KUNSTEN: SCHILDERKUNST De opleiding schilderkunst beweegt zich in het spanningsveld tussen picturale taalvaardigheid en de persoonlijke artistieke beleving. Vertrekkend vanuit een grote aandacht voor het rijke kader waarbinnen de schilderkunst zich tot op heden heeft ontwikkeld, word je uitgenodigd om je eigen beeldtaal te realiseren. In de eerste en tweede bachelor is het atelierwerk voor een belangrijk deel gebaseerd op waarneming: stilleven, model, portret, landschap. Deze studie biedt tal van aanknopingspunten met recente en oudere werken van grote meesters. Met een grote aandacht voor het rijke kader van waaruit (of waartegen) het eigen plastische taalgebruik stap voor stap kan worden ontdekt en ontwikkeld. 8 ATELIER MULTIMEDIALAB GRAFISCH GRAPHIC DESIGN A graphic designer is creative, loves drawing, has a vivid imagination, can analyse, organise, inform and communicate, has an interest in language, literature, society and culture. The curriculum of graphic design is based on the interaction between different artistic, theoretical and practical courses, including design, drawing, illustration, typography, photography, multi-media and digital techniques. GRAFISCH ONTWERP Een grafisch ontwerper is creatief, tekent graag, heeft verbeelding, kan analyseren, organiseren, informeren en communiceren, heeft belangstelling voor taal, literatuur, maatschappij en cultuur. De opleiding tot grafisch ontwerper is een interactie van verschillende artistieke praktische vakken zoals: vormgeving, tekenen, illustratie, typografie, An important competency of a graphic designer is to reflect in terms of conceptual and functional design. A lot of attention goes to innovative ideas, experimental research and critical self-reflection in the development of a particular individual vision and visual language. Vanaf het tweede jaar kan je zelf meer accenten leggen en kiezen met welk medium je grafisch wil communiceren. Om ook zelf mobiel te kunnen werken is het bezit van een eigen laptop zeker een aanrader. Moreover, design processes are often effectuated by means of new techniques and forms of communication, such as digital media and apps. During the first year you will be initiated in graphic design, illustrative design, as well as animated interactif design. In the second year you can narrow things down and choose which medium you want to graphically communicate with. Tijdens je studieperiode volg je een stage van 6 tot 9 weken bij een ontwerpof reclamebureau, een illustrator, uitgever of multimedia bedrijf om praktijkervaring op te doen. Onze afgestudeerde studenten zijn o.m. werkzaam als zelfstandig ontwerper, illustrator, multimediaontwerper, art-director bij ontwerpbureaus, uitgeverijen en andere bedrijven. In this digital era of mobile working, it is strongly recommended to possess a personal laptop. You will also take an internship of 6 to 9 weeks at a design- or advertising company, an illustrator, publisher or multimedia company in order to get some working experience. Our graduates are, among others, active as independent designer, illustrator, multimediadesigner, art-director or they are employed at design companies, publishers and other companies... 10 FINE ARTS FINE ARTS: SCULPTURE You create form and meaning in a threedimensional language. You investigate structures, materials, colors, surfaces, and thus develop a personal view of your environment. To fully be able capture the idea of artistic freedom, you first learn and practice the basic sculpting techniques. On that foundation your own artistic language can evolve: the craft is the basis on which artistic freedom is built. VRIJE KUNSTEN: BEELDHOUWKUNST In een driedimensionale taal vorm en betekenis geven aan je omgeving, dat is de opleiding beeldhouwkunst. Je onderzoekt daarbij structuren, materialen, kleuren, oppervlakten, en ontwikkelt zo een persoonlijke kijk op je leefwereld. Om ten volle artistieke vrijheid te veroveren, leer je en oefen je de basistechnieken van het beeldhouwen. Op dat fundament kan je eigen artistieke taal zich ontwikkelen: het vak is de grondslag waarop artistieke vrijheid stoelt. Door boetseren, tekenen en analyse van de natuur kom je tot boetseren van menselijk figuur en portret, en tot compositie en assemblage met hetzelfde onderwerp. Resultaat is uiteindelijk een persoonlijke inhoud in een persoonlijke, ruimtelijke vormtaal. Tekenen is daarbij de basis en steun onder de vorm van figuur- en anatomisch tekenen en als ontwerp- en onderzoeksschetsen. Zo kom je uiteindelijk tot een eigen handschrift. 11 By sculpting, drawing and analysis of nature you arrive at sculpting the human figure and portrait. The result is ultimately a personal content in a personal, spatial form language. Drawing is the basis in the form of figure and anatomical drawing, and sketching as design and research. Ultimately, you end up with a personal signature. Sculpture is a programme with great emphasis on atelier, where you practice together or individually and study clay, plaster, metal, stone, mixed media. Your fellow students are there for support, encouragement and discussion. You are doing your own research - under individual guidance, complemented by theory courses. We organize custom workshops - in a historical location - busy hotbeds where original sculpture is created. Your work can evolve into a figurative direction, but it can just as well take a totally different turn. The objective of the Master s program is to be able to independently investigate an artistic problem and to present the results of this research both visually and spacially. 12 COSTUME DESIGN Theatre has become a mix in which different disciplines from the stage arts are complemented with visual art forms and multimedia. With its academic bachelor, Costume design wants to offer an education that combines the study of the medium theatre with the study of contemporary art. An extensive theoretical base ensures the student to have a broad vision on theatre in all of its aspects. COSTUME THEATERKOSTUUM DESIGN THEATERKOSTUUM Theater is de laatste jaren een mengvorm geworden waarbij disciplines uit de podium- kunsten aangevuld worden met beeldende kunstvormen en multimedia. De afdeling theaterkostuumontwerpen wil met zijn academische bachelor een opleiding aanbieden die de studie van het medium theater verbindt met de studie van de hedendaagse kunst. Een uitgebreide theoretische basis zorgt ervoor dat de student een brede visie krijgt op het medium theater in al zijn aspecten. 13 Besides the drawing communication skills, the knowhow is taught through practical exercises in which text analysis, dramaturgy, semiotics, character analysis, technical research and practice form the core. The curriculum offers you an extensive package of tools through internships, workshops and assignments. The three year bachelor is short but intensive. The master is focused on theatre work on a professional level. The costume design studies are nowhere near a course costume maker, but lead to theatre costume designer, what contains a lot more baggage. That is why we expect candidates to show an interest in social and cultural issues, as well as some drawing skills. Naast de belangrijke tekenvaardigheden, wordt de vakkennis bijgebracht door middel van praktische oefeningen, waarbij tekstanalyse, dramaturgie, semiotiek, karakteranalyse, technisch onderzoek en praktijk centraal staan. Onder leiding van een team docenten wordt aan de studenten o.a. door middel van stages, workshops en oefeningen, een breed pakket van tools aangeboden. De driejarige bacheloropleiding is kort maar intensief. De master is helemaal toegespitst op het theaterwerk op professioneel niveau. De opleiding is geenszins een scholing tot kostuummaker maar tot theaterkostuumontwerper, wat heel wat meer bagage veronderstelt. 14 PHOTOGRAPHY Photography is a rapidly changing medium with a direct social link and relevance: it works with reality and is embedded in the world. The photography department of the Royal Academy of Antwerp trains the image makers of tomorrow by familiarising them with the technical, conceptual and esthetical aspects of the medium. A passionate team of professional photographers with international careers, and experienced professors in photo-technique and photographic history challenges you to develop a subjective attitude towards visual culture and contemporary art. One of the main parts of the program is making, presenting and interpreting photographs. We don t want to impose dogmas, but value the personal voice and authenticity of the maker. We stimulate an open dialogue between personalities, so that every student can determine and defend his/her own position and conviction. Photography is both craft and communication. A thorough understanding of the photographical technique and history, combined with the understanding of visual codes, symbols and metaphores, stimulate the student to take a critical and visual stand in our modern and complex society. 15 The photography department is known for its direct link to the photographic field by hosting lectures and workshops by internationally renowned photographers and artists (such as Beat Streuli, Peter Bialobrzeski, Charles Fréger, Peter Granser, Gregory Halpern, Christian Patterson, Brian Ulrich, Ria Pacquée, Hans op de Beeck, David Claerbout ). We also work in close collaboration with photo festivals (Breda Photo), museums (FOMU) and galleries. Alumni of our Photography Department find their way as autonomous artists, independant photographers, curators, critics, teachers,... Fotografie is tegelijk een vak en een taal. Door enerzijds een grondig begrip van het métier en haar geschiedenis te verwerven en anderzijds de visuele codes, symbolen en metaforen te doorgronden, stimuleert deze opleiding de student om kritische beeldende posities in te nemen binnen onze complexe samenleving. Fashion is considered as an expression of our time, as a relationship between garments, the body and society, but also as an artistic and creative entrepreneurship. The fashion programme emphasizes the development of an artistic and innovative fingerpint... MODE FASHION MODE De afstudeerrichting Mode aan de Antwerpse Academie is ongetwijfeld dé topschool voor getalenteerde modestudenten. Mode bekijken wij als een vorm van expressie van de emoties van onze tijd, als een relatie tussen kledij, het lichaam en de maatschappij, maar ook als een artistieke en creatieve onderneming. Tijdens de bachelor en master opleiding wordt vooral een innovatieve en een conceptgerichte aanpak gestimuleerd. Je wordt aangemoedigd te improviseren met nieuwe vormen, originele bewerkingen van materialen, en alternatieve creatieve en praktische processen te exploreren. Van nature heb je als modeontwerper een grenzeloze interesse in het nieuwe en het onbekende. 18 JEWELLERY DESIGN & GOLD- AND SILVERSMITHING Our urge for decoration, in which jewels and objects are the most important means of identification and expression, is both universal and timeless. Jewels and objects tell a story about the status and style, mentality, character and culture of the person using them. At the same time they are a witness of social, cultural and technological developments. That is why jewellery design, gold- and silversmithing is such an exciting and many-faceted profession that, although it is founded on a rich craft tradition, is nevertheless subject to ongoing development. The educational programme for the Jewellery design, goldand silversmithing course of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp, closely follows developments in this professional domain. Juwelen en objecten vertellen een verhaal over status en stijl, mentaliteit, karakter en cultuur van de persoon die ze gebruikt. Tegelijkertijd zijn ze de getuigenis van maatschappelijke, culturele en technologische ontwikkelingen. 19 The focus lies on the development of individual talent, creativity and the self-motivation of the student, by means of research, content development and selfreflection. In addition, attention is paid to the technical skills and practical insight needed for the craft. Technology and materials know-how, gemmology, the history of jewels and 3D computer drawing make this study programme an exciting voyage of discovery, where curiosity and imagination are continuously stimulated. Throughout the four years (3 years bachelor and 1 year master programme), visits to crafts and industrially oriented companies, but also inspiring workshops by (international) guest lecturers play an important role. De afstudeerrichting Juweelontwerp en Edelsmeedkunst volgt deze ontwikkelingen op de voet. De ontplooiing van het individueel talent, de creativiteit en het vermogen tot zelfstandig werken van de student staan centraal. Er is veel aandacht voor onderzoek, conceptontwikkeling en zelfreflectie, maar ook voor de ontwikkeling van technische vaardigheden en praktisch inzicht met respect voor het ambacht. Praktijkgerichte theoretische vakken zoals techniek en materialenkennis, edelsteenkunde, juweelgeschiedenis en 3D-tekenen maken van de opleiding een boeiende ontdekkingsreis waar nieuwsgierigheid en verbeelding voortdurend worden geprikkeld. Studiebezoeken, beurzen, tentoonstellingen, evenementen en (internationale) gastdocenten met praktijkervaring maken deze opleiding zeer dynamisch. 20 FINE ARTS: IN SITU³ In Situ³ is a multi-medial study program, which approaches two principles: a particular situation (a topic or an assignment) and individual projects. The students/young artists investigate the visual, social and artistic context and execute, if possible, via diverse materials and/or techniques their ideas/concepts. The overall view is important. FINE ARTS IN SITU3 VRIJE KUNSTEN IN SITU3 VRIJE KUNSTEN : IN SITU³ In Situ³ is een multimediale opleiding die vertrekt vanuit twee invalshoeken: een specifieke situatie (een thema of opdracht) en het vrije werk en individuele projecten. Als student/ kunstenaar onderzoek je de vormelijke, sociale en artistieke context en voer je zo mogelijk, d.m.v. diverse materialen en/of technieken ideeën/concepten uit. 21 In de afstudeerrichting van Situ³ ga je op zoek naar een dialoog of interactie tussen beiden. Het experiment is vitaal in het leerproces. Met vallen en opstaan ontwikkel je samen met je medestudenten/ kunstenaars inzichten en vaardigheden. In het In Situ³-atelier ontvouwen en bediscussiëren studenten, samen met hun docenten, elk een persoonlijk plan, verhaal of waarheid. Bijgevolg krijgen ze een brede kijk op een bepaalde situatie en ontmoeten ze diverse creatieve geesten in ontwikkeling. An artwork has a connection with its environment. In Situ³ is looking for the dialogue or interaction between both. The experiment is vital. With trial and error you will develop, together with the other students and young artists artistic insights and skills. You will share your sustained passion or practice which can lead to unpredictable, personal and moving pictures with your classmates. In the In Situ³ atelier you will unfold and discuss, together with the teachers, your individual plan, story or truth. 22 FINE ARTS: PRINTMAKING In order to create graphic art, it is necessary to master a strong technical background. The Printmaking department will provide you with all the aspects of the printing techniques, such as engraving, block printing, lithography and silkscreen. By combining these techniques with creativity, you will be able to express your ideas in a more exciting and innovative way. Contemporary artists are using printmaking more frequently, sometimes in combination with other media. Our students are using international contacts and exchange programmes to build a network, which will be very usefull in the near future. Besides a career as an independent artist, graduates can find work as an art teacher (with a supplementary course), as an illustrator, as a graphic designer or in any creative job. VRIJE KUNSTEN VRIJE GRAFIEK FINE ARTS PRINTMAKING VRIJE KUNSTEN: VRIJE GRAFIEK Om grafische kunst te creëren is een degelijke technische basiskennis noodzakelijk. Vrije Grafiek reikt je alle aspecten van de druktechnieken (diepdruk, steendruk, hoogdruk en zeefdruk) aan. Door een grafische taal te koppelen aan jouw eigen creativiteit ontwikkel je een persoonlijke opwindende en vernieuwende artistieke uitingsvorm. 23 Onze studenten maken dankbaar gebruik van de internationale contacten en uitwisselingen waardoor ze een netwerk opbouwen dat hen in de toekomst van nut zal zijn. Naast een volledig zelfstandige artistieke loopbaan kan je terecht als lesgever (indien je een bijkomende pedagogische cursus volgt) of in de grafische sector als illustrator of artistiek ontwerper. 24 SPECIFIEKE LERAAR WORDEN? Dan is de specifieke lerarenopleiding (SLO) aansluitend bij de master beeldende kunsten zeker iets voor jou. De specifieke lerarenopleiding sluit naadloos aan op je basisopleiding. Maar je kunt ook al opleidingsonderdelen van de SLO volgen, gelijktijdig met je masteropleiding. Mooi meegenomen, toch? Door les te geven leer je kritisch kijken naar het werk van anderen, maar ook naar dat van jezelf. Je ziet in dat leren een proces is, iets dat stap voor stap moet groeien. (Françoise Beck, alumna) LERARENOPLEIDING BEELDENDE KUNSTEN Je kan je inschrijven indien je een masterdiploma in de beeldende kunsten of een academisch bachelordiploma hebt en je je inschrijft voor een masteropleiding. Alle colleges worden gegeven op de campus van de Academie in de avonduren (vanaf 17.30u) op maandag en dinsdag. Ook als werkstudent kan je de lessen dus zonder al te veel problemen volgen. 25 DE STERKE PUNTEN OP EEN RIJTJE 1. Aandacht voor alle basiscompetenties. De basiscompetenties zoals decretaal bepaald, vormen het uitgangspunt voor de opleiding. Bijvoorbeeld taal- en mediapraktijk, stage schoolgebeuren etc. Hierbij blijft centraal staan dat we werken met leraren in de beeldende kunst en de basiscompetenties worden aangepast aan atelier- en domeinspecifieke situaties. 2. Flexibiliteit. Je kan je opleiding combineren met je studie of werk: de lessen worden immers vooral s avonds gegeven. Ben je ingeschreven voor een masteropleiding, dan kan je al starten met de opleiding. 3. Integratie van theorie en praktijk. Er is een weloverwogen overgang van theoretische naar praktijkgerichte opleidingsonderdelen en omgekeerd. Opdrachten i.v.m. stages worden begeleid door en besproken met vakmentoren, lectoren en stagebegeleiders, zodat theorie en praktijk elkaar organisch aanvullen. De theorie wordt steeds gegeven in functie van de praktijk en is hierdoor praktijkgericht. 4. Stage. De kennismaking met de praktijk gebeurt geleidelijk, zodat de praktijkschok vermeden wordt (observatiestage, participatiestage, doestage, stage schoolgebeuren). 5. Brede voorbereiding op de praktijk. Je doet praktijkervaring op met verschillende en in diverse onderwijsvormen (DKO, KSO, ASO, HKO ), maar ook in de kunsteducatieve sector, waardoor de kans op werkzekerheid wordt vergroot. De opleiding heeft sterke connecties met het werkveld waardoor de opleiding aanpassingen blijft maken in functie van de noden van dit werkveld en de onderwijsvernieuwingen. Wanneer ik enkele dagen in mijn atelier aan mijn eigen artistiek proces werk, voel ik de nood om even afstand te nemen. Het lesgeven is daarvoor ideaal, een andere omgeving, collega s en leerlingen die me stimuleren, inspireren. Elke leerling is anders en vraagt een specifieke begeleiding, zowel persoonlijk, technisch als inhoudelijk.
