4 Inleiding Een bijzonder interessante uitkomst van het Parallellepipeda-project is het ontstaan van een nieuwe cross-over studie tussen Experimentele Psychologie en Nucleaire Geneeskunde. Volgende kunstenaars namen hieraan deel als proefpersoon (naast een groep niet-kunstenaars die hieraan gekoppeld werden, rekening houdend met een aantal kenmerken zoals geslacht, leeftijd, enz.): Vigdis De Cauter, Ronny Delrue, Nick Ervinck, Tin Jacobs, Peter Hulsmans, Wendy Morris, Anne-Mie Van Kerckhoven en Koen Vanmechelen. In de hierna volgende tekst geven Koen Van Laere en Johan Wagemans tekst en uitleg bij dit onderzoek. Maar eerst laten we één van de deelnemende kunstenaars, Wendy Morris, aan het woord die haar ervaringen als proefpersoon heel concreet beschrijft (een perspectief dat men slechts zelden in wetenschappelijke publicaties zal aantreffen). Ook één van de deelnemende wetenschappers schetst zijn perspectief op deze studie. 1. Visies van een kunstenaar en een wetenschapper The perspective of one of the participating artists Wendy Morris: Drawing on demand First a creativity test. Looking at a black egg-shape on the otherwise blank pages of a booklet of a creativity test. Being told to respond to this object with a drawing that is narrative and that needs a title. Seeing this page that needs to be drawn upon, seeing the stopwatch in the hands of the researcher, seeing the pencil waiting to be used. Looking at myself drawing on this piece of paper, knowing that I am being watched. Then the MRI scan. Being claustrophobic probably didn't help. Headphones on, plastic mask-like contraption over my face, cable with bell-button into my hand, and then eased into the tunnel. It is small, feels tight, and is really, really noisy, even with the headphones. I made the mistake of opening my eyes for half a second and felt the panic rising. Headphones, plastic head-cage, plastic see-through something, tunnel. No escape. Very tight, very small space, very scary. So I started to breathe as regularly as I could and started to count each released breath. I seriously thought about pushing the bell to get out - but thought of the team waiting to get on with the PET tests and decided to control myself. I counted breaths until three-hundred while the machine rumbled and cracked and shot and screamed. Then suddenly it went quiet and I was released. Now the drawing trials. Four hours flat on my back with my head immobilized in an aircushion that has been vacuumed-packed around my face and strapped down to the scanner bed. My left arm connected to a set of intravenous drips. Resting on my stomach a digital drawing board. Suspended from the ceiling a monitor that shows what is drawn on that drawing board. A blanket over my legs because it is not warm. I can't look left or right because of the air-cushion and because I have been asked not to move. My head is in the ring of the scanner. Every now and then the scanner makes a noise. Fifteen minute pause between each trial which seems an eternity. New tracer administered, thirty second wait for it to reach my brain and then a new instruction on the monitor. The 'creative drawing' 138

5 trials are the best. There the minute goes very fast, so fast that once I thought the nurse had come back too soon to turn off the tracer. I thought there had been a mistake and that I should keep on drawing. So I did until my arm nearly cramped up. Imagining a drawing is the least interesting. Usually I do that with my eyes closed. In one of the trials I tried to imagine a washing line (dull) and clothes hanging on it (dull) and then thought of washing pegs and a home-made peg-bag that my mother always used and then I felt nostalgic. In the next 'creative drawing' trial I drew her peg-bag. A sense of looking and being looked at. Looking up at the monitor as I make a drawing - seemingly by remote control since I can't see the surface of the digital drawing board on my lap. Looking at two small lines that intersect and imagining what they might become. Looking as a drawing by another artist appears on the monitor and being instructed to follow those lines with my pen on the drawing board. Knowing that in the adjoining room my drawings are being watched on another monitor. Knowing that my brain is being scanned, is exposed, is being looked at as I draw. A sense of flow as the tracer seeps into my veins, into my brain, down through my arm and into the drawing on my monitor, into all the monitors and screens in the adjoining room. A surreal experience. The perspective of one of the participating scientists Johan Wagemans: Serendipity in the arts and sciences As written elsewhere in this book (Anne-Mie s chapter and my chapter), Koen and I did not know each other when we started this collaboration. In fact, neither of us has ever before studied the neural correlates of creativity. Koen came to this research from his background in cannabinoid receptors and novelty seeking in drug-dependency. I came to this research from my background in visual perception. Of course, we share a common interest in the neural basis of all kinds of psychological processes and being together in this Parallellepipeda project also shows our fascination for the arts. And I have been teaching an introductory psychology course to students in science, engineering and architecture, in which I included a chapter on the psychology of creative processes in these areas. But from there to a collaborative study on the neural basis of creativity is still a big jump and one that we would probably not have taken if the circumstances would not have facilitated it. Serendipity does play a role in science. It just so happened that Anne-Mie had invited the two of us to visit her studio in Borgerhout and that we decided to drive there together, so we started to chat and it probably took us less than half an hour to come up with the basic design of this new PET study. We were going to test two groups of participants (artists and non-artists) who would all be doing four tasks while their brain activity was recorded. The four tasks are all versions of the same drawing task. In the most central (experimental) condition (called creative drawing ), participants get some short line fragments on the screen (called a seed ) and they have to use this to create a visually interesting drawing. In the other (control) conditions, they have to perform some reduced variant of this task: They have to look at the same kinds of seeds but just imagine a drawing without actually drawing it (called creative non-drawing or imagining ); they have to look at an animated digital recording of a drawing made by another artist while it is being drawn and follow it by a similar movement of their pen (called non-creative drawing or tracing ); or they VII. 6 just have to look at another drawing (in the same animated fashion) without drawing (called non-creative non-drawing or looking ). Comparing these four conditions allows us to identify the neural correlates of creative drawing, while at the same time controlling for the visual and motor aspects of the task. The basic design is simple but it becomes rather complex and involved when you add all of the other components of the study: the pre-scan tests and questionnaires, the MRI scan to get a good picture of the anatomy of the participant s individual brain, the production and injection of the tracer (the substance that allows us to trace the brain activity), the waiting time, the data analysis, etc. From the researcher s perspective, this is a relatively straightforward type of study, although more time-consuming than some other studies (especially in the data collection and analysis stage). From the participant s perspective, this is a very demanding study, as will be clear from Wendy s description above. It is absolutely not trivial to spend 6 to 8 hours in the hospital to participate in a scientific experiment, to lie still for 3 to 4 hours with an injection needle in your arm and drawing with your other one (or being forbidden to draw in some conditions), looking at simple (stupid?) line fragments or (uninteresting?) drawings by others for a couple of minutes each time (twelve times in total), and doing nothing else but trying to lie still (and resist the pain in your back, your head, not to mention the urge to go to the bathroom). We, as researchers, usually take this for granted as a sacrifice for research because we are interested in the research questions and the answers provided to us by the data being collected. And we also assume most of the time that everyone shares these interests. Some people do, and luckily many of the artists in the Parallellepipeda project (and some of their colleagues and friends outside the project) are among them, but even then it remains a burden (see Wendy s description). And, worse perhaps, some of the participants raised serious questions about the validity of this study: What does completing a simple seed with-in one minute in such a cold and constrained environment have to do with the normal creative processes taking place in the artist s studio? Not much, when you come to think of it, but this is how scientists try to make these fascinating moments observable that are normally unobservable, and control for the other activities that are normally involved (e.g., moving your eyes to scan what is already there and moving your fingers and hand to draw what will be there), and subtract them out because they are not considered to be part of the real creation. Or, are they? Is our way of providing input to the artist (by these seeds ) representative for the kind of input artists normally use? Or is it destroying the serendipity that normally plays a role in art? Is this way of drawing (with a pen on a digital tablet within a minute or so) representative for what visual artists normally do in their studio? To what extent do artists start from what is already there? To what extent do they have an internal image (in front of their mental eye) before they start? Do they have a plan or purpose when they start to draw, or do they draw unconsciously ( the head thinks, the hand draws, cf. Anne-Mie s view on her drawing process)? Do they monitor what they draw and continue from there? How can one use scores for figurative creativity in artists whose creations range from very abstract to realistic? Etc. Of course, our research will only scratch the surface of the neural underpinnings of (one aspect of) creative processes, but we feel we have made a start. We will show some results during the exhibition and perhaps we will also devote one of the Thursday evening sessions to have a debate on the (im)possibility of neuro-aesthetics, i.e. the scientific study of the neural basis of creativity and art (or the aesthetic experience of art). 140

7 2. De studie Wetenschappelijke achtergrond Creativiteit houdt het genereren van iets nieuws in via transformatie van het reeds bestaande. Het creatieve proces omvat sensorische, affectieve en cognitieve componenten, met verschillende vormen van bewustzijn: naast automatische creatie (inspiratie), plots inzicht (verlichting), eventueel bij het uitvoeren van een andere, niet-gerelateerde activiteit, dient ook een bewuste combinatie van elementen te gebeuren (integratie). Hoewel er wetenschappelijke vooruitgang geboekt is op het vlak van sociale, psychologische, pathofysiologische en historische benaderingen, zijn de fundamentele neurobiologische processen die betrokken zijn bij creatieve informatieverwerking in de hersenen nog zeer weinig gekend (Dietrich, 2007). Nochtans pleiten meer en meer studies voor een neurobiologisch substraat van humane creativiteit en esthetiek (Zeki, 2001). Men noemt deze nieuwe tak van de wetenschap neuro-esthetiek. Maar omdat studie van mentale vermogens en/of het creativiteitsdomein een moeilijk onderzoeksveld is, staat deze discipline nog in zijn kinderschoenen. De complexiteit van creativiteit in acht nemend, hebben de meeste onderzoekers zich toegespitst op specifieke karakteristieken van creatieve producten, terwijl anderen specifieke delen van het creatieve proces hebben onderzocht. In een meer recente technische benadering onderzoekt men de neurale activiteit bij creatieve processen in vooraf bepaalde omgevingen te onderzoeken via electrofysiologie en/of beeldvorming (Chavez-Eakle et al., 2007; Geake and Hansen, 2005; Mashal et al., 2007). Dergelijk onderzoek is uiteraard afhankelijk van de premisse dat natuurlijke creativiteit kan gemeten worden door tests die als generisch kunnen worden aanzien (Griffiths, 2008). De methoden die tot nog toe gebruikt zijn voor studie van neurale correlaten van creativiteit zijn elektroencefalografie (EEG), functionele magnetische resonantie beeldvorming (fmri), singlephoton emissie tomografie (SPECT) en positron emissie tomografie (PET). De laatste techniek heeft als voordeel de afwezigheid van een gesloten, oncomfortabele ruimte die bovendien geluidsvrij is (in tegenstelling tot fmri), de mogelijkheid tot dynamische 3D beeldvorming (in tegenstelling tot EEG), en meervoudige acquisitieparadigma s die veel betere sensitiviteit voor veranderingen in activiteit toelaten (in tegenstelling tot SPECT). Voortbouwend op de enige bestaande maar enkelvoudige 3D SPECT perfusiestudie bij proefpersonen die hoog en laag scoren op een gestandaardiseerde psychometrische test voor creatieve verbale performantie (Chavez-Eakle et al., 2007), was het doel om in kader van het Parallellepipeda project een PET hersenperfusie studie uit te voeren naar een welbepaald aspect van creativiteit, met name visueel creatieve performantie. Dit kon gebeuren bij erkende Vlaamse kunstenaars, die aan dit project deelnamen en bij andere geselecteerde collega s. Tevens werden ter vergelijking controlesubjecten gescand zonder opleiding, onderhouden vaardigheid of interesse in visuele, verbale of muzikale creativiteit. Onderzoek naar het neurobiologisch substraat van creativiteit is geen doel op zich, maar laat mogelijks toe pathologische omstandigheden te definiëren waarbij creativiteit verstoord is (vb. frontotemporale dementie, na beroertes) of technieken te ontwikkelen om selectieve functionele connecties te versterken ter bevordering van creatieve performantie. 8 De wetenschappelijke doelstellingen van dit cross-over project waren om: 1. te onderzoeken welke neurale circuits door visuele kunstenaars geactiveerd en welke gedeactiveerd dienen worden bij het uitvoeren van een creatieve tekentaak onder gecontroleerde omstandigheden; 2. te onderzoeken of dit verschilt van niet-creatief aangelegde controlepersonen; 3. na te gaan of deze circuits met de huidige technologie ook op individuele basis kunnen worden bepaald en welke de variatie daarin is; 4. correlaties aan te tonen tussen objectieve creativiteitsdimensies uit een gestandaardiseerde neuropsychologische creativiteitstest, met name vloeiendheid, originaliteit en flexibiliteit uit de Torrance Test of Creative Thinking (TTCT). De hypothese hierbij luidde dat visuele, perceptuele en cognitieve circuits sterker betrokken zijn bij de creatie van nieuw visueel artistiek materiaal, en dat een mate van frontale inhibitie nodig is om vlot tot creatieve performantie over te kunnen gaan. Methoden Het onderzoek werd goedgekeurd door de Commissie Medische Ethiek van het Universitair Ziekenhuis Leuven. In totaal 10 kunstenaars (20-60 jaar, selectie op basis van erkenning door kunstdeskundige Edith Doove) en 10 leeftijds- en geslachtsgematchte controles werden in deze studie geïncludeerd. Een medische vragenlijst ter exclusie van neurologische of psychiatrische afwijkingen werd afgenomen en de links- of rechtshandigheid werd bepaald door een standaard vragenlijst (Briggs & Nebes, 1979). De TTCT is een frequent gebruikte, gestandaardiseerde psychometrische test om creatieve performantie te meten. Bij deze test worden standaard stimuli aangeboden waarbij het creatieve proces gereproduceerd wordt in een gecontroleerde omgeving: meer bepaald gebeurt er een evaluatie van divergent denken en van de productie van een reeks responsen die niet bepaald zijn door de expliciet gegeven informatie. De TTCT is globaal een domeinonafhankelijke test: er kunnen specifieke domeinen worden bepaald, hetgeen vereist is gezien de notie creativiteit verschilt tussen schrijvers/dichters, muziekcomponisten en plastische kunstenaars. Er werd ook een neuropsychologische screeningtest ter bepaling van mogelijke psychiatrische pathologie afgenomen, met name de BSI vragenlijst (Brief Symptom Inventory). Voor de PET studie werd, in tegenstelling tot voorgaande studies met slechts één perfusieconditie (Chavez-Eakle et al., 2007), vier verschillende condities bestudeerd over een totaal van twaalf proefbeurten per subject. Deze condities bestonden uit twee tekentaken en twee imaginaire taken. Hiervoor werd een digitaal tablet gebruikt met directe visuele feedback op een gekalibreerde monitor (zodat 1 cm penuitwijking op de tablet overeenkomt met 1 cm op het scherm). Het hoofd van de vrijwilliger bleef gefixeerd in een vacuümhouder zodat geen bewegingsartefacten konden ontstaan. De opstelling wordt in figuur 1 getoond. Via een zelf ontworpen softwarepakket (Ir. F. Amand, Laboratorium voor Experimentele Psychologie) werden de condities gerandomiseerd en gestandaardiseerd aangeboden aan 142

9 de proefpersoon. 15 De PET scans gebeurden via intraveneuze injectie van ongeveer 300 MBq H 2 O per scan, en gelet op het fysisch halfleven van 2 minuten werd een tijd van 10 tot 12 minuten tussen twee onderzoeken gelaten zodat geen overlappende activiteit meer aanwezig was bij de start van een nieuwe conditie. De beelden werden gereconstrueerd in drie dimensies via gefilterde terugprojectie en geanalyseerd via statistisch parametrische mapping (SPM2). Bij alle deelnemers werd ook een magnetisch resonantieonderzoek uitgevoerd (T1 MPRA- GE en T2 sequenties). De MPRAGE volumetrische scans (1x1x1 mm voxelgrootte) werden gebruikt voor een voxel-gebaseerde morfometrische analyse die globaal hersenvolume en regionale verschillen in grijze stofconcentratie kan aantonen. Resultaten en interpretatie Afbeelding 2 toont de verschillen in cerebrale activatie bij een kunstenaar, geprojecteerd op haar individuele MRI. Bij het ter perse gaan van dit boek waren nog niet alle resultaten verwerkt; deze zullen op de tentoonstelling getoond en toegelicht worden. Afbeelding 1. Afbeelding 2.
