Dean Karin Laglass held a presentation, reflecting on the faculty s ambitions and the many plans that have been put into motion. The employees engaged with the dean and expressed their views on their role within the long-term strategy of the faculty. Dirk Jan van den Berg and Anka Mulder, members of the TU Delft s Executive Board, were on hand to represent the university s perspective on the faculty s development. DOOR MANON SCHOTMAN In het oude bachelorcurriculum was er een aantal zogenaamde struikelvakken, zoals de informaticavakken, BK4042/4043 en de ontwerpprojecten 2 en 4. Ondanks dat uit de enquêtes naar voren kwam dat studenten ontevreden waren over deze vakken, trad er lange tijd weinig verbetering op. Op een gegeven moment denken studenten: waarom zou ik die enquête invullen? Er gebeurt toch niets mee. TvR: Die vakken zijn mijn persoonlijke frustratie. Een organisatorisch probleem was dat er geen centraal aanspreekpunt was per vak of per leerlijn, noch voor de gehele bachelor. MA vult aan: In het oude curriculum waren er vijfenveertig vakken en vijfenveertig aanspreekpunten. Wij moesten dus met vijfenveertig man communiceren over verantwoordelijkheid. Ook was het soms onduidelijk wie welke verantwoordelijkheid had met betrekking tot de kwaliteit van het onderwijs. Men zei: jullie zijn toch van Kwaliteitszorg, dus jullie zorgen toch voor de kwaliteit? We hebben wel veel gedaan met de informatie die in verschillende evaluaties naar voren kwam. Na jarenlang evalueren zie je wat de sterke en zwakke punten zijn van de bachelor en waar structurele verbeteringen nodig zijn. Die zijn nu opgenomen in het ontwerp van het nieuwe curriculum. Waarom gebeurt er nu meer met de enquêteuitslagen? RR: Alle modules hebben nu coördinatoren, die voor de kwaliteit ervan eerstverantwoordelijk zijn. Wij hebben hen gevraagd om bij Tom en Mirjam aan tafel te komen zitten om mee te helpen bij het maken van de enquêtes. TvR: Met Remon als bachelorcoördinator en de modulecoördinator aan tafel, zullen we samen de modules intensief evalueren. Voorheen deden we dat niet, want Mirjam en ik hadden dat alleen nooit gered. Maar met de bachelor en de modulecoördinator, die bepaalde afgebakende verantwoordelijkheden hebben gekregen, is het mogelijk om het zo intensief te doen. Binnen een jaar willen we met het hele onderwijsteam de grootste kinderziektes uit het programma hebben gehaald. Wat gebeurt er met de uitslagen? RR: Nadat we de uitslagen intensief besproken hebben, hebben de mensen die daadwer-

Het versloeg de prachtige vondst pietitie - symbool van een van de meest bizarre discussies ooit, maar dat terzijde. kelijk het onderwijs ontwerpen, dus de modulecoördinatoren en leerlijnteams, de verantwoordelijkheid om een plan te maken voor het volgende kwartaal. Dat is de filosofie. Deze plannen worden vervolgens besproken met FSR, Stylos en de Opleidingscommissie en geïmplementeerd in het onderwijs. Bevat de enquête ook open vragen? TvR: Meer dan ooit. Bij veel vragen staat: licht je antwoord toe. En er is heel veel ruimte voor opmerkingen. MA: Dat is heel belangrijk. Wij werken veel met stellingen, zoals De studielast vind ik goed verdeeld over het kwartaal. Door de opmerkingen begrijp je beter hoe je een antwoord van de studenten moet interpreteren en kun je beter de vinger op de zere plek leggen. Opmerkingen zijn vaak ook positief, trouwens. Dan schrijft een student: mijn docent was geweldig, daar heb ik veel steun van gehad en veel van geleerd. Remon Rooij, Tom van Rongen en Mirjam Albertz in gesprek (Foto gemaakt door Lun Liu) Wat zien studenten ervan terug? RR: Daar hebben we een aantal leuke ideeën voor bedacht. Ik zal, als bachelorcoördinator, bij het eerste college van een nieuw kwartaal tien minuten de tijd nemen om wat te zeggen over de resultaten van de enquête die de studenten eerder hebben ingevuld. MA: Bovendien krijgen studenten bij de uitnodiging om een kwartaalenquête in te vullen, gelijk een samenvatting van wat er uit de enquête over het vorige kwartaal is gekomen en wat het verbeterplan is. We laten daarmee zien wat er met de enquêteresultaten gebeurt. 1. Vul de enquête in 2. Ga langs Stylos met een print van de bevestigingsmail 3. Krijg een gratis kopje koffie bij de espressobar RR: Ook willen we via Bnieuws en de communicatieschermen in de straat van Bouwkunde iedereen op de hoogte stellen van de enquêteresultaten. Iedereen mag zien en weten dat de zorg voor onderwijskwaliteit hoog op de facultaire agenda staat. Hoeveel tijd kost het invullen van een enquête? TvR: De nieuwe kwartaalenquêtes kosten ongeveer tien minuten à een kwartiertje om in te vullen. Dat is iets langer dan bij de oude enquêtes, maar het zijn er nu ook minder. Vroeger waren er verschillende enquêtes voor losse vakken en daarnaast nog semesterenquêtes. Daar wilden we duidelijkheid in scheppen: per kwartaal is er nu één enquête. Wat moeten studenten doen om de enquête in te vullen? MA: Op 29 november krijgen de studenten een mailtje met het verzoek om, via een persoonlijke link, de enquête in te vullen. Hij blijft dan een week openstaan, tot en met 8 december. Wanneer je de enquête hebt ingevuld, krijg je een bevestigingsmail. Als je die uitprint en ermee naar Stylos gaat, krijg je een bon voor een gratis kop koffie bij de espressobar. Via flyers en posters vragen wij studenten om de enquête in te vullen. Met al die promotie-acties hopen we op een goede respons. RR: Waar het uiteindelijk om gaat, is niet alleen veel meer tevredenheid van studenten, maar ook veel meer betrokkenheid. Dat is cruciaal, want als je meer betrokken bent met elkaar, heb je ook meer respect voor elkaar. En dan kan er meer ontstaan dan alleen maar rode kaarten naar elkaar uitdelen. Samen kunnen we dan echt goed onderwijs realiseren. enquête-uitslagen te vinden op: portal.tudelft. nl/sites/bkkwaliteit/ Zeg participatiesamenleving en je denkt ook aan particulier opdrachtgeverschap. De burger neemt het heft in handen bij het maken van zijn eigen huis. Met nogal wat echtscheidingen tot gevolg maar alla, die huwelijken hadden het welllicht toch niet gered. Nadeel van particulier opdrachtgeverschap is dat het tot op heden vooral iets is voor grondgebonden woningen. Liefst in een ruime wijk met veel groen, want al die allerindividueelste expressies van de allerindividueelste emoties worden wel eens wat veel voor de ogen. Tijd voor een experiment dus. Gestapeld particulier opdrachtgeverschap. Plaats van handeling: Laakhaven in Den Haag. Een ideeënprijsvraag uitgeschreven door de gemeente voor een toren van minimaal dertig meter hoog die organisch moet kunnen groeien. Ik mocht in de jury plaatsnemen, samen met Rients Dijkstra en Elco Brinkman en onder leiding van particulieropdrachtgeverschaps-ideoloog Adri Duivesteijn. Maar liefst 120 inzendingen vielen op de mat. In twee rondes haalden we er toch verrassend eensgezind drie winnaars en twee eervolle vermeldingen uit. Deelnemers worstelden met voorfinanciering omdat de eerste bewoners hogere kosten hebben door overmaatse fundering en lift - en vonden daarvoor een aantal slimme oplossingen. Via aandelenuitgifte bijvoorbeeld. Ander hoofdbreken vormde het bouwsysteem en de regelgeving. Hoe bouw je een huis bovenop een woning waarin al iemand woont? Ook hier oplossingen. Door te werken met prefabricage hoeven de ondergelegen bewoners maar 24 uur hun huis uit als het volgende erop gezet wordt. Daarna is het afbouwen gewoon net als wanneer de bovenburen er een nieuwe keuken inzetten. Opvallend veel teams bestonden uit architecten met constructeurs, bouwers en jawel, zelfs projectontwikkelaars. Samen ontwierpen ze faciliterende systemen gericht op maximale invullingsvrijheid voor toekomstige bewoners. Ik zag gecombineerd en geïntegreerd vakmanschap in ontwerp, proces en techniek. Veel ondernemende en creatieve ideeën. Een duidelijke meerwaarde door samenwerken vanuit meerdere disciplines. Bouwen op elkaars kennis en kunde. WAT IS HET RECEPT VOOR SUCCES VAN DEZE NIJMEEGSE ARCHITECT? DOOR JANE STORTELDER Waar komt die fascinatie voor biobased bouwen vandaan? Ik was altijd al erg met de natuur bezig en wilde eigenlijk bioloog worden. De evolutie, de werking en de groei van bijvoorbeeld een boom, daar lag mijn interesse. Biologie is het niet geworden, want in 95 ben ik naar Delft verhuisd om Bouwkunde te gaan studeren. Tijdens mijn studie was organisch en ecologisch bouwen nog wild en onbekend, maar als liefhebber van de natuur snapte ik niet hoe je de mooiste vormen met de meest smerige materialen kon maken. Een van mijn docenten vond het voormalig woongebouw De Zwarte Madonna in het centrum van Den Haag het beste gebouw dat hij kende. Dat gebouw had niks met mijn fascinatie voor de natuur te maken. Ik heb 8,5 jaar over mijn studie gedaan, maar toen ik stage ging lopen en in de praktijk terecht kwam leerde ik pas echt hoe architectuur en techniek in elkaar zitten. De link met de natuur heb ik altijd gehouden, zo ben ik bij biobased bouwen terecht gekomen. De fascinatie begon dus al ruim voor mijn studie aan de TU Delft. Het is 2007, het begin van de economische crisis. Jij richt in dat jaar ORGA Architect op. Wat is hiervoor nodig? Fascinatie, geluk, talent? Of gewoon een slimme ondernemersgeest? Ik heb bij verschillende bureaus gewerkt en deed sinds 2004 ORGA Architect er een beetje bij. In 2007 kreeg ik veel werk en besloot ik er fulltime voor te gaan. Ik had het grote voordeel dat duurzaamheid in die tijd flink in opkomst was. In 2002 kwam het boek Cradle to Cradle uit en in 2006 de film van Al Gore An Inconvenient Truth. Dit zorgde voor bewustwording van duurzame ontwikkeling. Daarmee was ik al bezig, dus eigenlijk zat ik voorop die golf. Mijn fascinatie voor de natuur heeft tot het biobased bouwen geleid; in een crisis houdt een specialisme stand. Daarnaast ben ik inderdaad een ondernemer, dus het is een combinatie van factoren. Je moet natuurlijk ook op het juiste moment op de juiste plek zijn. ORGA Architect focust zich op biobased bouwen. Wat houdt dat in? Natuurlijke architectuur omvat drie elementen: techniek, vorm en materiaal. Biobased bouwen richt zich vooral op materiaalgebruik en techniek. Er zijn materialen op basis van fossiele grondstoffen en materialen op basis van plantaardige grondstoffen. Het doel is de materialen op basis van fossiele grondstof, bijvoorbeeld piepschuim, te vervangen door een materiaal met een plantaardige grondstof, zoals schapenwol, hout, riet of vezels. Het doel is de natuurlijke kringloop zoveel mogelijk uit te breiden. Dit kan worden toegepast op bijna alles: badkamertegels, isolatie, dakbedekking en ga maar door. Toch is 100% biobased bouwen moeilijk omdat je nog steeds met bijvoorbeeld elektriciteitskabels en glas te maken hebt, maar je kunt er wel heel ver mee komen. Een voorbeeld van een biobased materiaal is de aubergineplant. De aubergine zelf is voedsel, maar in de plant zitten hele sterke vezels. Er is nu een techniek die deze vezels laat verstenen, zoals versteend hout. Het geeft een tegel-achtig materiaal voor bijvoorbeeld een buitengevel. Na de gebruiksfase verpulver je het en strooi je het uit over het land. Een echte biologische kringloop dus. Toch baseer ik mijn keuzes niet alleen op duurzaamheid. ORGA Architect richt zich bewust ook op de vorm. Ik heb eens een overstek op het noorden gemaakt, puur als esthetisch element. Ik vind dit geen materiaalverbruik, zolang je het op een verstandige manier doet. Een ontwerp moet natuurlijk wel mooi zijn en reeël blijven. Mijn doelgroep is de Cultural Creative. Zij eten biologisch, hebben een elektrische auto en willen een duurzaam huis, zonder dat ze moeten wachten op regen om te kunnen douchen. Deze groep leeft dus bewust, maar niet tot in het extreme. Ik noem het modern ecologisch bouwen: het gaat natuurlijk om recycling en het gebruik van duurzame materialen, maar het moet ook mooie en functionele architectuur zijn. Je bent een van de voorlopers op het gebied van biobased bouwen. Is dit wel goed te integreren in de huidige bouwwereld? Technisch gezien is het mogelijk. De materialen zijn aanwezig en er is vraag naar deze manier van bouwen, dat is dus niet het probleem. Ik had vooral met praktische problemen te maken. Het is een heel gedoe om aan de aannemer uit te leggen wat je wilt. Toen ik bijvoorbeeld eens piepschuim wilde vervangen door BioFoam, zei een aannemer: Maar piepschuim is toch veel goedkoper? De bouwwereld is in mijn ogen conservatief; sommigen zijn er nog niet klaar voor om de traditionele markt los te laten. Om dit probleem op te lossen heb ik ORGA Bouw opgericht, dat een intensieve samenwerking tussen aannemer en architect mogelijk maakt. Ik wil een aannemer die mijn ontwerp doortrekt tot een goed gebouw. ORGA Bouw schuift aan bij het voorlopig ontwerp en kent de ontwerp keuzes door en door. Hierdoor ontstaat een veel effectiever bouwproces. "Mijn tip: specialiseren en ondernemen, zonder te vergeten dat je architect bent"

5 5 Wat is het recept voor succes? Soms wordt er gezegd dat ik tegen de stroom in ga, maar eigenlijk ga ik juist met de stroom mee. Ik ga mee met de tijdsgeest en de groei van en vraag naar duurzaamheid. Maar het is ook de kunst om vernieuwend bezig te zijn. Dat doet ik bijvoorbeeld door ORGA Bouw op te starten. Een dergelijke samenwerkingsvorm is niet nieuw maar wel van deze tijd. We zijn ook aan het kijken of we de samenwerkingsverbanden breder kunnen trekken met bijvoorbeeld een groene makelaar en de Triodos Bank. Dat is ondernemen, je moet innovatief zijn. Binnen het bureau doet mijn vrouw de acquisitie. Dit is ook een belangrijk aspect. We maken onszelf en het ecologisch bouwen kenbaar door goed vindbaar te zijn op internet, door lezingen te geven op universiteiten en door artikelen in De Architect te publiceren. Woonark, Ouderkerk aan de Amstel "Ik was altijd al erg met de natuur bezig en wilde eigenlijk bioloog worden. Ik ben architect geworden, maar als liefhebber van de natuur snap ik niet hoe je de mooiste vormen met de smerigste materialen kan maken" Het succes zit hem denk ik ook in het feit dat ik bij de start van een ontwerp, direct de gebruikers wil spreken. Als het om een schoolgebouw gaat, ga ik in gesprek met de directie, de beheerder, de leerlingen maar ook met de buurt. Wat willen ze? Zo ontstaat een gebouw dat past bij de functie. Dit is een bottom-up benadering, vroeger was het veel meer topdown: een projectontwikkelaar heeft niks te maken met de gebruikers en wil zo goedkoop mogelijk bouwen maar toch aan de normen voldoen. Bij bottom-up gaat de bewoner nadenken over wat hij nodig heeft, nu en in de toekomst. Dat is een wezenlijk verschil, wat dat betreft is de crisis een zegen. Er ontstaan ontwikkelingen die anders geen kans hadden gehad. Je richt je vooral op Nederland. Heb je de ambitie om internationaal te gaan? Op dit moment heb ik jonge kinderen, dus ik zit er niet echt op te wachten om maanden in het buitenland te zijn. Maar toen ik TU Delft Alumnus van het Jaar werd, was toch het eerste wat ik dacht: daar kan ik de grens mee over. Toch wil ik eerst hier uitbreiden, maar het is wel iets wat ik zou willen. Het buitenland kan veel leren van Nederland. In Engeland ligt bijvoorbeeld veel potentie; ecologisch bouwen is daar groeiende, maar het biobased bouwen is nog niet zo bekend. In Duitsland en België zijn ze wel meer bezig met duurzaamheid, maar vooral op het gebied van energie. Terwijl voor mij de schaarste van grondstoffen een groter probleem is dan het energieprobleem. Maar als ik morgen gebeld word voor een leuke opdracht in het buitenland, pak ik hem met beide handen aan. Je hebt op jonge leeftijd al veel bereikt. Wat is je droom voor de toekomst? Dat ecologisch bouwen mainstream wordt. En daarnaast de ultieme opdracht uitvoeren. Een voorbeeld hiervan weet ik niet, maar het zal de perfecte combinatie tussen techniek, vorm en materiaal zijn. Ik moet er natuurlijk wel de mogelijkheid voor krijgen. Ik verleg zelf steeds mijn grens; voor mij was mijn eerste aanbouw ook ultiem. Wat is je advies voor de aankomende architect? Specialiseren! Nu is duurzaamheid de focus, maar er zijn heel veel gebieden waar je je op kunt specialiseren. Als je expert op een gebied bent, word je gevraagd. Tegelijkertijd is het handig als je van verschillende vakgebieden iets af weet, zodat je deze op de juiste manier bij je projecten kunt betrekken, zoals wij met de aubergineplant. De verantwoordelijkheid van de architect zal in de toekomst veel breder zijn dan dat deze nu is. Maar je moet het wel zelf doen. Dat betekent ondernemen, zonder te vergeten dat je architect bent. Naast een oorkonde, een persoonlijk bedrag en natuurlijk de eer, mag Daan Bruggink ook een bedrag van euro besteden aan onderzoek naar keuze. Hij wil hiermee een onderzoek door studenten en promovendi starten naar een off-the-grid project in de Ardennen. De plannen staan nog in de kinderschoenen, maar misschien is dit de kans om inderdaad het ultieme project uit te voeren: Geen opdrachtgever en veel verder gaan dan waar je normaal geremd wordt. He is quoted as saying, "Copy paste... and sometimes better" about the undeniably exciting new wave in Danish architecture. Surely, we thought, the Danes must have another story? BY BRIGITTE O'REGAN Just to test the water, Bnieuws sent out a set of questions to the architectural firms invited for the DK@BK Capita Selecta Lecture series organized by guest professor Jacob van Rijs. Together with Nathalie de Vries and Winy Maas, he is founding partner of internationally renowned Dutch office MVRDV. Little did we know that this idea of simply copying the super Dutch generation of the 1990s is a particularly sensitive subject within the Danish architectural world. This is partly because there is some truth to Winy Maas' double-edged comment. But also because, in many ways, what the Danes are up to now can also be seen as quite different to what happened here in The Netherlands in the 90's. The following is our attempt to represent the Danish point of view. Let us begin with the scholarly Boris Brorman Jensen [BBJ]. BBJ, is an architect, intellectual and educator based at Aarhus School of Architecture. He has carefully observed the evolution of Danish Architecture since the beginning of his studies in the late 1980s. He saw the death of the urbanism department at his university, the public disenchantment with redundant box architecture and inwardlooking architects lost in self-referential theoretical mazes. He was part of the first wave of young architects seeking inspiration in Holland in the 90s. BBJ has also been involved in training many of the architects behind what now described as the New Wave in Danish architecture. While many of this talented generation also worked as interns in Dutch offices. "Seen from a Danish perspective, the new wave did something important for the cultural role of the architect in Denmark. These young firms actually managed to transform the status of architecture and urbanism in our society. The new wave was a refreshing reaction against Danish mainstream architecture of the 1990s, which was in a kind of double crisis. One prevailing nonspecific box recipe with redundant facade variations was all the profession seemed to be able to offer the built environment. The legitimacy of architecture was more or less reduced to a question of like or dislike, where ordinary people had no say because of their bad taste. Danish architecture of the late 1990:was stuck in a cul-de-sac of self-referential rhetoric detached from a broader cultural discussion. This has changed due the influence of these young firms."-bbj And then one could also argue that due to the influence of Dutch firms such as MVRDV, West 8 and OMA the cultural role of the architect has changed in Denmark. However the matter isn't so straight forward. BBJ is the first to admit that the impact of such architects has been profound in Denmark. He even adeptly draws the parallels that could have allowed such a phenomenon to flourish in The Netherlands and Denmark but not, for instance, in the United Kingdom, Germany or Belgium. What the two countries perhaps hold in common is a long standing planning culture, and a generous and culturally engaged welfare state. But, he warns us, what has happened in Denmark is not a reproduction of what happened in the Netherlands in the '90s. But hang on a second; before we go further, MVRDV

7 7 The Museum of Liverpool designed by 3XN Photgraphy by Adam Mørk what actually did happen here in the '90s? Well... to grossly, and unfairly oversimplify: PRAGMATISM happened. Pragmatism can be seen as an attitude that arose from disenchantment of inability of the technocracy and theory in architecture and planning to remain relevant to what was happening in reality. It is characterized by an emphasis on cross-disciplinary research into the circumstances of a given assignment. Pragmatism is associated with a conceptual and diagrammatic approach accompanied by a journalistic style of communication, attributed by BBJ, to Rem Koolhaas. In the 90s this new dynamic approach to design was taken up by a generation of young Photoshop and render savvy Dutch architects whom evocatively spread its presence across the globe. In this way, the avant-garde in architecture was able to reassert its relevancy. Martin Krogh, is one of the Danish New Wave, now himself a successful architect and co-founder of ADEPT. ADEPT Is a young firm now collaborating with MVRDV in Denmark. He has come a long way since he worked hard on competitions as an intern at MVRDV 10 years ago. He asserts that if there is anything the Danish inherited from the Dutch it is pragmatism. The Dutch architects made pragmatism avant-garde. Conceptualism they would say. They became the heroes for my generation. Winy Maas and Jacob Van Rijs were my idols. They still are. In one powerful anecdote, he explains: One day, after handing in MVRDV s proposal for the NYC Olympics - where I did the images Winy came to my desk and asked if I could help on the deadline for the Market Hall hand in. I had not slept for 36 hours and could see that the work would require another all-nighter. I told Winy that I would do it if he would do one conceptual sketch for me that would explain the whole NYC project. It took him less than a minute. Yet I felt I had won." Yet Krogh also supports BBJ in his stance that what is happening in Denmark is different. Martin Krogh expresses his exasperation, "Is the obsession of copyism a very Dutch thing? I remember the fights ten years ago between OMA and MVRDV about who made the concepts first. The patent in content and the almost war feeling between the workers. I once showed up at MVRDV wearing an OMA T-shirt and did not have a pleasant day. In Denmark we are friends with our competitors. We have debates and parallel competitions where we share our work and ideas." When the Romans made Greek-looking sculptures, Roman sculpture might have appeared similar. But what it did, what it meant, and even how it was made had important fundamental differences. The same could be said of contemporary Danish Architecture. Take for example the graceful longstanding firms 3XN and Henning Larsen architects who have creatively and professionally evolved with time. They have adopted pragmatism in research and design, but they hold on to humane principles that have always compelled them. These are principles, which many argue are missing in the approach of some Dutch offices that are labeled as cynical. This cynicism seems especially evident in the work of Dutch guru Rem Koolhaas who rejects an overdose of good intentions. "Through the past fifty years our focus has been on basic architectural means such as daylight, human scale and spatiality. These are the foundation stones of our company and our practice. We are working with context-based design. The surroundings, local culture and climate to a building or a larger development are probably our most important inspiration," states Jacob Kurek, partner at Henning Larsen. Kim Herforth Nielsen, founder of 3XN, explains. "When 3XN designed ed the Muziekgebouw/BIMHUIS ebou M in Amsterdam, m, we were also inspired ired by the same conceptual cept way of thinking ing probably because it was situated ted in a master plan designed ed by OMA. However, er, we were e just as much influenced by the Danish way of putting human values at the center of the design. This is the added value of today s contemporary Danish architects. [... ]In this manner, 3XN has developed its own expression and architecture, which is distinct and certainly not a copypaste of someone else s way of doing things. Dutch architecture fifteen years ago was, as I see it, working from more of a conceptual form play. The focus was less about daily life and interaction amongst people, but rather about composition and functionality without a particular contextual connection. Central principles explored in Danish pragmatism include public good, context, sustainability and a tradition of high quality detailing in design "The Danish pragmatism is indeed a little 'happier' than the Dutch variant, but hey, aren't they the happiest people on earth?" In a reaction to the discussion, Jacob van Rijs rejects the cynicism label when it comes to the work of MVRDV. "Our work has sometimes ironical elements and refers to aspects in society that are important for us to comment on, combining theory and practice. This is less strongly visible on the Danish side, I must say. [...] The Danish pragmatism is indeed a little 'happier' than the Dutch variant, but hey, aren't they the happiest people on earth? But that does not make us cynical ADEPT

BY DAPHNE BAKKER On the first of November 2013, a jury consisting of Dean Karen Laglas, Eric Luiten, Dick van Gameren, Inge Bobbink, Marcel Bilow, John Heintz and external critic Janneke Bierman, examined the 47 submitted graduation projects from the previous acadamic year. Based on their analysis, design concept, spatial quality, presentation, and the coherence between their ideas and executions, nine excellent projects were selected. The projects will have to compete with other projects from eight different architectural institutions in the upcoming National Archiprix competition. For more info: archiprix.nl STUDY CENTERS FOR AMSTERDAM Tjerk de Boer This project introduces five study centers spread across Amsterdam, each acting as permanent building blocks to provide tranquility in a turbulent city. The shape of each center is determined by its location, resulting in a diverse yet generic and recognizable design. JURY: The urban plan of this project is innovatory and the application of typology and function is astute. With limited means, an exciting solution was discovered, in which beauty is revealed through its simplicity. MOERWIJK HOFJES This design suggests a subtle but very Oriana Kraemer effective architectonic transformation of typical Dudokian housing blocks in Moerwijk, Den Haag. JURY: The many interventions, such as the thoughtful reorganisation of the plans, the design of the prefabricated extensions and a new ownership strategy, help to make it a complete project - simultaneously ambitious and realistic. The sympathetic and well thought out design is not only applicable to Moerwijk, but throughout the Netherlands. Photography by Lun Liu Photography by Lun Liu INTEGRATING INFORMALITY Photography by Lun Liu Rohan Varma Instead of portraying informal settlements as isolated islands of poverty, Integrating Informality considers them as valid parts within a city in which slumdwellers can integrate within the city of Mumbai. JURY: This project showcases a high level of social involvement with the ambition to change existing slums. It is a thoroughly researched, well-thought out and refined solution expressed on the urban scale. RESPONSIVE RESPONSIVE SUBURBIA SUBURBIA Dominika Linowska The project combines living and working in suburbs such as IJburg. Responsive Suburbia suggests an approach to the design of collective spaces, through the diffusion of the barriers between the public and the private. In times of crisis, the solution lies not in a row of houses, but in DIY. JURY: This is a subtle and thoroughly thought through project with outstanding compositional qualities. It responds to the changing use of dwellings in a aesthetically strong manner.

9 9 RECORDING AND PROJECTING ARCHITECTURE Filippo Maria Doria This project responds to the spatial experience of the blind, whose perception of space is defined by a intermediate phase between the confrontation with the physical reality and the formation of an internal image of this space. JURY: This library for the blind displays a highly artistic quality in which orientation is based on sound. The elaboration of the design is fascinating. The spare use of words in the presentation proves the coherence of the design. DIGITAL DESIGN & DIGITAL FABRICATION FOR ULTIMATE CHALLENGES Pieter Stoutjesdijk This project enlists the new digital revolution to solve the enormous, worldwide demand for (emergency)housing. Through the digital milling of 2D elements, which are attached via friction-fit connections, advancements are made in the areas of adaptation and the efficient use of material. JURY: The design is a reinterpertation of Haitian architecture and goes above and beyond in its attempt to address a current, worldwide issue. Photography by Lun Liu THE RESILIENT RIVER David Klinkhamer City rivers have lost their intimate relationship to the city and have been reduced to physical barriers. Resilient River brings new life to the river and her banks, which now lie lost within the cityscape. Through weaving together urbanity, mobility, architecture and landscape, the banks are once again part of the city. JURY: The monumentality of the design is a continuation of the Viennese tradition. The project is developed with so much depth and care, resulting in a thoroughly designed project. The designer has a deep understanding of his trade. SEDIMENT OF A FRAGMENTED LANDSCAPE Anvina Devi Canakiah Sediment of a fragmented landscape is a collage and assemblage created through retracing the war-torn areas of Kosovo. JURY: It is an intriguing and mystical project. It suggests an architectural city, in which new life arises without having to erase the past. It is socially relevant, humble and subtle. MUIDERPOORT STATION RENEWED Hyeonsu Yang In Muiderpoort Station Renewed, the dikes and train tracks are no longer the dividing elements, but instead the public space which connects the location to the surrounding area. JURY: The unraveled station and the radical move to break open its embankments are a testament to the boldness of this project. The visible relation between old and new is proof of the successful approach to solving a transformation puzzle.

10 10 RESEARCH B NIEUWS 04 NOVEMBER INTERVIEW WITH NELSON MOTA BY BRIGITTE O'REGAN, PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF COMOCO ARQUITECTOS based on this polarization of positions. I want to try and make sense of these two poles. For instance my primary research interest is the apparent polarization of modernity and the vernacular in architectural discourse and practice. These positions have often been seen as opposite poles. What I am currently investigating is the many different ways to bring these two concepts together. Nelson Mota is a multiple awardwinning architect, designer, writer, researcher, educator and PhD candidate here at the TU Delft. After examining with wonder the plethora of his activities in preparation for our interview, I expected to meet a kind of magician or shamanic healer of modern rifts and shattered relationships in architecture, ethics, space, history, tradition and society; a mystic of sorts. But though Nelson s work is often transcendental, there is nothing mystifying about his approach or his research. In fact the opposite is true; he seems to engage in active demystification of architectural ideas and generates highly applicable solutions in terms of design strategy, research methodology and education. What is immediately apparent is his disciplinary rigor, ability to communicate at different levels to different audiences and his no nonsense approach. We are privileged to have Nelson Mota participate as tutor in the Dwelling Design Studio and seminars, in the research program The Architecture Project and its Foundations - Revisions: Changing Ideals and Shifting Realities and as an active contributor to the faculty based publications DASH and Footprint. The following interview excerpts can help us discover for ourselves what might lie behind his successful integration of so many fields and activities. What tools do you use to achieve this? I would say that the most important tools are history and memory. I like this phrase from writer George Santayana: "Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it. This means that I think one of the fundamental instruments for every student of architecture and every architect is to have a solid and sound historical knowledge. And to be relentlessly willing to uncover ever more lessons from the past. So through this pursuit, if you look carefully you will see that these binary polarities become somehow mingled and conflated. Examination of history helps to understand and make sense of complexity and hybridity. But history is often problematic. It seems for instance that historical evidence is often generated by people with a bias of interests. And many stories remain untold, dooming us to forget. How can we learn about these other, less evident narratives? Your role as a student and architect should be more than just that of being a problem solver. You need to be very much aware of what reality is and you should try catering for the real. The way that you make design decisions should be informed by a critical account of your circumstances. In analyzing discourses or historical accounts, it is therefore vital to discern what is produced by partisanship and what reality is. Take for instance the relation of modernist architects with vernacular architecture, and you will find an interesting and paradoxical case. The vernacular was seen as the opposite of the modern movement in architecture, but it was also used to underpin tenants in functionalism. One of the fundamental aspects of my research, which in fact also pervades our design at Comoco Arquitectos, is an attempt to try and bridge the gap between binary polarities. Often architectural discourse is important members of the modern movement to demonstrate a functional approach to the built environment. Pointing to the way local materials were used rationally and efficiently for shelter, but not going much beyond that. It is obvious that there are other readings to be found in the vernacular architecture of the Sketch showing demountability

11 11 ize for Architecture in Wood Hall to change rooms fisherman's hut that can be equally compelling for the architect. Hence, you need to be able to critically reflect on multiple aspects, and thus avoid falling prey to a partisan vision of history. You also point to the interaction between the architect and civil society in your writing and research as a way to resolve binary oppositions, conflictual positions and ultimately integrate multiplicity. In your view what role should the architect play in this kind of interaction? That is a very interesting topic. Indeed part of my research deals with citizens' participation in design and decision-making processes. Civil engagement challenges the notion of the disciplinary autonomy of architecture. This topic was intensely debated thirty or forty years ago. Many were asking to what extent the architect could be engaged in social change. And one of the answers to this was that the architect should be part of a participative process that has multiple stakeholders, first and foremost the residents in the case of housing design. This also brings up an important issue: to what extent should the expert, in this case the architect, give away or abandon his or her expertise, in favor of simply translating the wishes of the people? Should you design for the people or with the people? The first instance, designing for the people, can be seen as a populist issue, where the architect becomes no more than the hand of the people. The second position, designing with the people, is much more challenging and more often than not creates conflicts. Yet as far as I could see in the course of my research, these conflicts are immensely productive in terms of creativity. We can call these conflicts creative conflicts, because in the end it is this kind of relationship that brings out the best of both worlds. So to me this second approach is the preferred model for the social engagement of the architect. In your own design work, the N10 Sports Facility for example, which recently won in Portugal the 2013 prize for architecture in wood, you seem to resolve temporary use with a sense of permanence or continuity. What kinds of creative conflict did you encounter to achieve this? Obviously in this case we didn't have citizens' participation, but we did have a number of conflicts to resolve. We had to articulate the client s specific brief and requirements, the contractor s suggestions and hurdles, and our own disciplinary attitude. It was through a dialectical process that we brought about contributions from different sources to generate the outcome we reached. The N10 project shows an attempt to solve the pressing problems of the assignment, to accommodate the program - changing rooms, showers and a room for parties. To do that with the cheapest budget possible and then to build it very quickly in a way that would allow it to be demounted in two, three or ten years time. Though these may seem like banal circumstances, we believe that architects shouldn't give away their expertise in the face of them. We used the cheapest material we could find but still tried to apply the tools or skills of our discipline to bring it all together. For instance creating spaces that can be experienced in a meaningful way, playing with solids, voids and with the light. Defining space by opening and blurring boundaries. No matter what the assignment is, in architecture there is always a tension between what is permanent and what is transient or temporal. It is extremely important to be aware of the so-called zeitgeist the spirit of our times, the spirit of the moment. When you attempt to merely cater to the spirit of the moment it can become a dangerous and unsustainable way to approach a given project. You run the risk of only answering the problems of the moment. This is why I think it is important to have an account of the long history related to that specific project or topic. It is the mix of these two things, being conscious about history and being critical about the spirit of the moment that will allow you to tackle more pressing problems and also endure in time.

DOOR JANE STORTELDER In januari 2012 is prof. dr. ir. Anke van Hal vanuit haar eigen fascinatie de groep Passie Bestaande Woonomgeving begonnen. Samen met student-assistent Jessica de Boer organiseert zij, als aanvulling op het curriculum, verdiepende lezingen, workshops en excursies op maat voor alle studenten die de passie voor de huidige opgave en de omgevingspyschologische kant van het vak delen. De kennis die Anke van Hal de afgelopen 25 jaar als duurzaamheidsspecialist op heeft gedaan, wil zij nu inzetten om aan studenten te laten zien dat duurzaamheid niet iets is dat er ook nog bij moet, maar dat het juist leuk is. Ik wil graag meegeven dat duurzaamheid heel inspirerend kan zijn en dat het de ontwerpkwaliteit aanzienlijk kan vergroten. De Passiegroep buigt zich onder andere over de vraag hoe op duurzame wijze om te gaan met de bestaande woonomgeving. Een goed voorbeeld is de aanpak van wijken uit de jaren 60 en 70, waar veel mensen met een laag inkomen wonen. Volgens Van Hal is het van groot belang om alle aandacht, energie en creativeit te richten op de bewoners om zo een bijdrage te kunnen leveren aan het wooncomfort en de kwaliteit van de woonomgeving. Mensen moeten zich prettig voelen in hun woonomgeving; ontwerpers kunnen hier een grote impact op hebben. Omgevingspsychologie speelt een belangrijke rol, een onderwerp waar wij als studenten tijdens onze studie vaak te weinig over leren en dus te weinig over weten. Het draagvlak om dit aspect meer te integreren in het bachelorprogramma wordt op de faculteit steeds groter. Vanuit de sector komt ook steeds meer vraag naar kennis over de bestaande woonomgeving, maar ondanks goede ontwik- kelingen, is er op dit moment veel kennis uit de praktijk die de student nog niet bereikt. De Passiegroep heeft ook een praktische ontstaansgeschiedenis: de werkgelegenheid van de architect en de bouwkundige ligt in de toekomst in toenemende mate in de bestaande woonomgeving. De Passiegroep biedt een platform waar extra kansen en kennis wordt geboden aan studenten die zich interesseren voor het onderwerp. Om een verdieping in het studieprogramma aan te brengen, wordt de ervaring van verschillende professionals ingezet. Op deze manier wordt kennis overgedragen aan studenten en wordt een brug geslagen tussen theorie en praktijk en tussen student en professionals. Volgens Van Hal staan zij te trappelen om de nieuwe lichting studenten beter te leren kennen: De professionals uit mijn netwerk vinden het leuk om hun kennis te delen met de student. Bovendien ontmoeten zij graag jonge, enthousiaste mensen om in de toekomst mee samen te werken. Het mes snijdt aan twee kanten. "Er is op dit moment veel kennis uit de praktijk die de student nog niet bereikt" Anke van Hal De groep wordt gekenmerkend door zijn vrijblijvende, open en enthousiaste karakter: iedereen met interesse is van harte welkom. Op dit moment komt een gevarieerde groep studenten eens per maand samen. Zowel bachelorals masterstudenten met verschillende achtergronden ontmoeten elkaar tijdens de georganiseerde lezingen met een hapje en een drankje. Zeker is dat ook eerste-, tweede- en derdejaars studenten juist door hun frisse kijk op de architectuur veel kunnen bijdragen: Iedereen in de sector is op zoek naar antwoorden met betrekking tot de opgave in bestaande woonwijken. Studenten staan vaak open voor nieuwe dingen en kunnen met hun ideeën een enorme bijdrage leveren om zo professionals op een nieuw spoor te brengen, aldus Anke van Hal. De studenten komen zelf met hun interesses en onderwerpen, waarna Anke van Hal een geschikte professional uit haar netwerk uitnodigt. Op deze manier wordt als het ware kennis op maat geleverd: de student vraagt, de Passiegroep antwoordt. In de toekomst wil de groep Passie Bestaande Woonomgeving er ook andere faculteiten bij betrekken, zodat studenten onderling meer kennis kunnen uitwisselen. Het is niet meer het doel om een zo groot mogelijke groep te creëren, maar om juist de gemotiveerde mensen aan te spreken die de passie en het enthousiasme delen. Voor deze mensen wil de Passiegroep zich blijven inzetten zodat idealen verwezenlijkt kunnen worden en een echte kwaliteitsslag kan worden geslagen. De reactie vanuit de huidige groep is erg positief, maar nieuwe enthousiastelingen zijn meer dan welkom! Ook enthousiast geworden? 13 BK IN FOCUS 13 IN SEARCH OF CULTURAL RESILIENCE WITH THE GOVERNMENT PASSING THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE CONSERVATION OF MONUMENTAL BUILDINGS ONTO ITS MUNICIPALITIES, THERE IS A GROWING NEED TO ADAPT MONUMENTS IN ORDER TO PRESERVE THEM. EVERYONE FROM POLITICIANS TO ARCHITECTS SHOULD RETHINK THE WAY THEY APPROACH THE PRESERVATION OF MONUMENTS. MARIEKE KUIPERS, PROFESSOR OF CULTURAL HERITAGE IN DELFT, WILL LEAD A SEMINAR THAT WILL INTRODUCE NEW CONCEPTS AND METHODS TO TACKLE THIS URGENT ISSUE. BY DAPHNE BAKKER What is the aim of the seminar? The seminar s object is a fresh perspective in the ongoing discussion on the value of monuments and how we appreciate them. Recently the Rijksdienst voor het Oudheidkundig Bodemonderzoek (Archaeology), Instituut Collectie Nederland (Art collection and Central Laboratory) and Rijksdienst voor de Monumentenzorg (Monuments care) - three very different heritage preservation sectors with different traditions, merged into the National Agency for Cultural Heritage. This fusion will require a new approach to the preservation of monuments. These aren t always precious antiquities that may not be touched, but historical buildings that just like other buildings have the funcion to accomodate people. This past century, we focused mainly on how to conserve the historical forms and materials of a monument as much as possible. But in the 21st century we need to think of how we can respectfully adapt a monument that will match the needs of its inhabitants while strengthening the building's character. Is there a growing urgency to change the way we deal with the conservation of our monuments? Yes, I think so. Currently there are various theories on conservation, which are primarily based on ethical notions of preserving the original state of the monument. This is the literal definition of conservation. But the greatest challenge we face is to move forward and upcycle the use of a historic building. We need to make monuments function according to current and future demands. To achieve this, intervention is often necessary. Take our own faculty for example. It was always meant for education, originally Chemistry education, but after the previous building burnt down in 2008, it was required to accommodate an Architecture Faculty in the 21st century. Alongside a philosophy based on conservation ethics, we need intervention ethics, which examine the limits and opportunities of a monument. These limits and opportunities can be explored through the analysis of the cultural carrying capacity of a monument. How would you define the cultural carrying capacity of a monument? That s the most difficult question. A monument is a memory shaped by its form and material. We also assign a historical, aesthetic and social significamce to it. It s these material and immaterial aspects that help define the cultural carrying capacity of a monument. It is a term that embraces not just the skeleton, skin and interior of a monument, but also its space and atmosphere. Is finance the most important factor in saving the monuments? Not necessarily. It might sound a bit counterintuitive, but the most important factor is imagination. Take the Olympic Stadium from 1928 in Amsterdam. For their proposal to attract the Olympics to the Netherlands, the Olympic Committee was willing to make enormous investments to enlarge and update the stadium for a one-off event that will leave them with an enormous debt. With imagination you can foresee this kind of problems, how it will impact your future, and make sound and weighted decisions accordingly. Imagination is required to find the most suitable use for a monument. Cultural Resilience - the seminar Prof.dr. On 29 November, RMIT is organising a seminar on cultural resilience. The seminar will focus on the methods and concepts that are available or need to be developed in order to determine the cultural carrying capacity of a monument or listed building. This will involve identifying the parameters, values and architectural approaches that ultimately determine a historical building's cultural capacity to tolerate change. A booklet on cultural resilience, edited by Marieke Kuipers and Wido Quist and published by Delftdigitalpress, will be launched and be made available to participants. Tijdens het instappen is er enige onrust: de chauffeurs constateren te weinig zitplaatsen. Na nog een trekje aan mijn sigaret en de geruststelling dat de chauffeurs niet kunnen tellen, bezet ik de laatste vrije stoel en zijg neer naast een hoogleraar, die ik uiteraard ken, maar voor het eerst groet. De schemering is ons excuus om nog een tijdje te zwijgen. Er wordt een lijst doorgegeven. Naam en geboortedatum moeten worden ingevuld: R. J. Nottrot 9 juni Mijn buurman volgt. Ik ben van 8 juni, de verjaardag ook van Frank Lloyd Wright, zegt hij. Oh, ik bijna ook, want ik werd middernacht geboren, tijdens het verjaarsfeest van mijn grootmoeder, reageer ik. Hé, en mijn grootmoeder is van 7 juni, zegt hij direct. Het ijs is gebroken. Ik ben opgelucht: wij zullen elkaar voortaan groeten. De excursie kent een vol programma. Architecten houden van stress, zo lijkt het. Bus in, bus uit. Gebouw in, gebouw uit. Steeds te kort om goed te kijken en dan fotograferen als surrogaat. Ieder moment een aanleiding om informatie of grapjes te delen met elkeen die toevallig in de buurt is. Soms zeg je iets voor niets, omdat diegene waartoe je je gericht achtte door een andere gebeurtenis ineens je toehoorder niet meer blijkt te zijn. Sans rancune. De algemene stemming is die van opwinding en er wordt veel gelachen. Tijdens de reis retour zit ik naast een bekende. Zij werkt ondersteunend in de hal van vormstudie. Wij werken vaak samen en groeten elkaar op de faculteit veelvuldig. Het is donker in de bus en veel reisgenoten zijn ingedommeld. Wij praten ondertussen intensief. Van alles passeert de revue, veelal zaken die wij nog nooit met elkaar deelden. Mijn interesse voor mijn buurvrouw groeit en neemt de vorm aan van bewondering. Als we stoppen voor het avondeten sta ik op naast een ander mens, een nieuwe vriend. In the past decade, more and more projects, theories and organizations driven by the goal of social transformation have emerged within the architectural discipline. The asymmetric income and resource distribution of global capitalism and the lack of democracy and participation in privatized urban development have led to social and political awareness being increasingly important when approaching the field of architecture. Architecture for Humanity, a nonprofit organization that brings architectural solutions and professional services to communities in need, is a prime example of this growing movement of socially engaged architects 1. The notion of activism, defined as taking intentional action to instigate change on behalf of a neglected group, is closely related to this development 2. The lecture series and debate Activism in Architecture, that took place last Wednesday November 13, are part of a group research conducted within Explore Lab to collectively explore the notion of activism in architecture. Today, in modern capitalist societies building activity is produced as a commodity. This means that the planning, design and construction of buildings have become aspects that are primarily developed to create exchange on the market. The transformation of architecture into a commodity produces a fundamental shift in the functional and social objectives of building production 3. The values and qualities of the commodified built environment tend to be defined in monetary terms and the defense of property 4. Within this context it is increasingly difficult to develop built environments that prioritize the human needs of the inhabitants. In the Dutch TV-program De Slag om Nederland multiple cases of excessive real estate speculation in the Netherlands are exposed, for instance by Dutch city councils and corporations 5. To solely criticize architects and urban planners for the failures in the built environment would miss the bigger picture. However, architecture as a discipline remains inherently political, as architects either negate or confirm a position within the capitalist system 6. Currently, the role architects play in the creation of space tends to be passive, as designers often simply react to short-term market led demands of clients and developers 7. The question is then, how architects can play a more active, socially and politically aware role in the processes related to the creation of space. The afternoon on activism in architecture aimed at investigating issues like these, looking at the topics of public space, participation and the changing role of the architect. The speakers that participated in the debate were architect Hein de Haan, sociologist Katusha Sol of Placemakers and architect Sven Hoogerheide of Space&Matter. One of the main conclusions from the debate is that the role of the architect in transforming capitalist urban development is limited. As the speakers showed with their projects, the scale is mostly rather small, but the impact can be big. The role of the architect changes, because the context is changing; in that sense this role can again become more active. Working (closer) together with other disciplines and clients seems to be the motto. And what about participation? Benjo Zwarteveen, BSc6 The lecture on participation was very enlightening. It revealed to me that architects should engage more with their clients during the design process. I think that architects are afraid of this, because to them it might mean losing the freedom for artistic expression. Janneke van der Leer, starting Urbanism in 2014 The message that stuck with me was that we need to become specialists in the things we enjoy doing. There are so many possibilities if you just grab hold of the opportunities provided to you. The speakers are aware of what is happening within our society and use that as their starting point to improve our built environment. Maarten Kempenaar, Explore Lab, MSc4 The diversity of the speakers was very appealing. The lectures weren t passive and left room for interpertation and debate. And that is important. Katusha Sol, Placemakers, sociologist What struck me the most was the fact that there is a huge gap between what students are taught and the reality of the practice. In real life you have to deal with a context that is shaped by politics, finance and many other factors. The fact that this debate shed light on this was very informative. Sara Maani, architecture student from Aachen and Milan, The themes raised in the debate were all very interesting. I think it is not enough to teach students how to be good architects, but also to be responisble towards society. Sven Hoogerheide, architect Many thought-provoking projects were presented and it made me realize that there is a lot that can be achieved. All the different themes that were touched upon revealed that many exciting possibilities are possible. Thomas Dillon Peynado, BSc6 What struck me the most is that there is so much information available within the faculty, but this is not reflected within our curriculum. The knowledge I was exposed to today would have been very useful in my past projects. Hein de Haan, architect I was expecting to hear counter arguments towards participation and how it limits creativity. Fortunately, this was not the case. I think that architects should make a proposal for spatial organisation, but why would they have the last say in how and where a person should live.
