Aan de vooravond van een hopelijk prachtige economische lente rouwen we niet meer om ons verlies aan basisvertrouwen in de fi nanciële sector. Er gloort licht aan de horizon, een licht lentezonnetje. Als we maar de juiste keuzes maken, dan zou het wel eens een pracht voorjaar kunnen worden. Zijn we in staat onze consumptie-gedreven maatschappij bij te stellen richting duurzaamheid? Minder nutteloze spullen op zolder? 2 x afvragen of je iets nodig hebt voor je het koopt? Misschien zie ik het te rooskleurig, maar ik heb het gevoel dat de gekoesterde duurzaamheid een belangrijke motor voor het gewenste economisch herstel gaat zorgen: energieeffi ciënte producten, minder verspilling van grondstoffen per product, etc. Daarnaast zal vergaande transparantie in conventionele productieketens onze ogen gaan openen en zorgen voor publieke afkeer voor wat ons de voorbije economische piek heeft bezorgd: uitbuiting van mens en/ of natuur. We hebben jarenlang niet de werkelijke prijs betaald voor een product. Het gevolg was een overvloed aan nutteloze spullen die we terugvinden in elke hoek van onze woning; treffend gespiegeld door Birgitte Kaandorp en recent in zijn Oudjaar conference door Theo Maasen. Ook Belcampo voorzag reeds decennia geleden in zijn boek De Dingen de Baas wat de spullen met ons voor hebben. Laten we tijdens het WK voetbal deze zomer gewoon de Oranje toeters en bellen van 2012 en eerder hergebruiken. De economie die daar van moet leven willen we immers niet meer terug. Maar laten wij vooral kijken naar de watersector, daar weten we immers het meeste van! De keten moet duurzamer, zuiveringsinstallaties energieneutraal, en grondstoffen krijgen een tweede leven. Het duurde even, maar ook de politiek vindt aansluiting. Teruggewonnen fosfaat kan eindelijk worden vermarkt, waardoor we minder afhankelijk worden van de teruglopende voorraden fosfaatertsen. Er wordt druk gezocht naar synergie in de waterketen en meervoudig watergebruik is een reeds bespreekbare optie die van de keten een cyclus maakt. Met vol enthousiasme doen we hier graag aan mee!! Met een voldaan gevoel hebben we 2013 afgesloten. Maar liefst 4 van de 5 toegekende TKI-STW projecten in de zogenaamde Watertech call zijn binnen gehaald door onze sectie. Niet alleen nieuwe technieken en concepten voor drinkwater en gebruikt water (het vroegere afvalwater), maar ook nieuwe transportmethoden voor alternatieven in de sanitatiesector worden onderzocht. Op de valreep van de jaarwisseling kregen we ook nog te horen dat ons project m.b.t. tot meervoudig watergebruik in de Maputo, Mozambique, door de NWO-WOTRO call Urbanising the Deltas, is gehonoreerd. In de nieuwsbrief worden de nieuwe projecten kort besproken. Verder is het afgelopen jaar de MOOC een begrip geworden. Zo n kleine zijn gestart met het college Introduction to Water Treatment. En van de 1500 actieve studenten hebben zo n 500 met succes het examen gehaald eind november. Diverse MOOC studenten toonden interesse om verder te studeren aan de TUD. Ja, we geven graag onze kennis gratis weg en laten de wereld zien wat we in huis hebben. Dit geeft ons de mogelijkheid om de beste mensen naar Delft te halen en verder te gaan met broodnodige innovaties voor een duurzame waterketen. Jeroen Langeveld Degenen die zich willen aanmelden moeten nog even geduld hebben, want de call for papers is voorzien voor Na de succesvolle organisatie van het 5e Sewer Processes and Networks congres in 2005 in Delft is het de onderzoeksgroep riolering wederom gelukt om dit evenement naar Nederland te halen. In 2016 zal SPN8 plaatsvinden in Rotterdam op de prachtige congreslocatie: S.S. Rotterdam. Het driejaarlijkse SPN congres is met ongeveer 125 bezoekers een kleinschalig congres dat volop mogelijkheden biedt om intensief van gedachten te wisselen over thema s als nieuwe meet- en inspectietechnieken, ontwerp en beheeraspecten, hydraulica en systeemdynamiek Wij houden u op de hoogte! 4 Verslagen Section Sanitary Engineering participating in European Action Group on AnMBR Henri Spanjers The section Sanitary Engineering is participating in an European Action Group Anaerobic membrane Bioreactor for Recovery of Energy and Resources. This Action Group aims to assess the feasibility of anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) technology as a promising sustainable alternative to conventional wastewater treatment. Through a multidisciplinary scientifi c and industrial composition, the Action Group will achieve successful integration into a new design for a sustainable and economic wastewater treatment, and it will offer new marketable wastewater treatment solutions. The Action Group is an initiative under the European Innovation Partnership on Water - EIP Water in short. EIP Water aims to boost opportunities for innovation in the water sector. It facilitates the development of innovative solutions and approaches that contribute to economic growth, solve societal challenges, create jobs and enhance Europe s competitiveness. At the core of EIP Water are its voluntary multi-stakeholder Action Groups. These groups collaborate around themes related to one of the eight EIP Water priority areas, and their activities form the foundation of EIP Water s implementation phase. The first nine Action Groups were selected and established in May Their partners develop, test, scale up, disseminate and stimulate the uptake of innovations by the market and society for major water-related challenges. One of the benefits of an Action Group is that the group can participate indirectly in shaping European innovation policy. The Action Group on AnMBR for Recovery of Energy and Resources is in the EIP priority area Waterenergy nexus. Currently 12 organizations are involved in the group, including academia and industry, and the group is coordinated by the University of Valencia in Spain. Recently the AnMBR group successfully presented their nascent work at the fi rst conference of the EIP on Water themed Networking & interacting Innovating water, in the EU Parliament in Brussels on 21 November The anaerobic research group of our Section carries out various research projects on AnMBR, and participating in this European Action Group provides an excellent opportunity to share our research, and to expand and strengthen our network. 5 Key notes on anaerobic MBR Jules van Lier On November, de biennial of the German Industrietage Wassertechnik, organised by Dechema and DWA was held in Fulda, Germany. The conference is a mix of presentations on wastewater treatment technology, industrial water treatment, regeneration of process water and efficient industrial water management. The language is German which hampers the participation of non-german water professionals. A pity, Germany has a long tradition in water treatment technologies and effi cient water usage is high on the agenda in German industries. Presentation from both universities and large (chemical) companies gave an overview of the state of the art, showing similarities with our own research agenda. Treatment of produce water, cooling water preparation, ceramic membranes are some examples of hot topics. Not surprising I had a meet & greet with Evides Industriewater in their company stand at the conference. With regard to wastewater there is a high interest in highrate anaerobic treatment technologies and I was invited to give a key-note on the novel developments. I took the opportunity to discuss our ongoing research on anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) technology, combining the results of Jixiang Yang who defended his thesis in April 2013, and our Turkish PhD students, Hale, Evren and Kaan. I have to admit that presenting in German was one bridge too far, technical German is a little bit different from holiday chitchatting.. I could elaborate a bit further on our AnMBR results during a key-note in the workshop MBR for the Next Generation on December in Istanbul, Turkey. The workshop was organised by the Membrane Research Institute of the Istanbul Technical University, MEM-TEK, in the framework of a European MBR network project. During the workshop, key-notes were given by Chung- Hak Lee from Korea, Tor-Ove Leiknes from KAUST, Saudi Arabia, Anja Drews from Berlin, Germany and myself. As such, basic science on fluid dynamics near membrane surfaces, general understanding of fouling behaviour, how to use quorum sensing in fouling control, and the potentials of Anaerobic MBR were highlighted and discussed, together with a number of research papers. For me it was an excellent opportunity to visit Istanbul Technical University and its Membrane Research Institute (MEM-TEK). MEM-TEK is both a membrane production research institute and a membrane water treatment centre. Emphasis is put on flat sheet and hollow fi bre membranes for industrial water treatment, using different kinds of coatings for optimising fouling control. MEM-TEK has started end of 2012 and owns the sole membrane production facilities in Turkey. They aim to play a crucial role on membrane water-technology on the bridge between West and East. Obviously, I could dedicate some time to discuss with our PhD students Hale, Kaan and Evren, the ongoing development in their research, which currently comprises writing. They all have double work now: satisfying the their own University and satisfying TUD The experienced boat tour on the Bosporus was again amazing!! 7 Studentverslagen Kan het wat zachter? Over Bachelor Eindwerk in Portugal Nel Schimmer / Niets is wat het lijkt. Bij het lezen van de woorden Kan het wat zachter? denk je in eerste instantie natuurlijk aan geluidsoverlast, aan boze buren, huilende kinderen, politie aan de deur. Nee dus. Het betreft hier de titel van het Bachelor Eindwerk van Niels van Linden en Niels Harent, studenten aan de TU Delft, faculteit Civiele Techniek en Geowetenschappen. Het gaat over water, waterkwaliteit en hoe die te verbeteren. En niet zomaar gewoon leidingwater maar water, opgepompt uit een bron die zich bevindt op het landgoed Monte do Casarão, in de Alentejo, in het zuiden van Portugal, in de middle of nowhere. Kan het wat zachter? is een dik en deugdelijk rapport geworden. Het Bachelor Eindwerk van beide Nielsen is naar alle behoren en tevredenheid afgerond en beloond met een 8. Het rapport staat niet op zichzelf maar heeft als basis een Bachelor Eindwerk uit 2012, over dezelfde materie, van een student van dezelfde faculteit, Michelle Loozen. Hoe begon het allemaal? Wat ging eraan vooraf en hoe kwamen de contacten met de TU Delft tot stand? Waarom in Portugal? Waarom Monte do Casarão? Landgoed Monte do Casarão is sinds 2007 eigendom van de Nederlandse familie Riemslag die van de voormalige eucalyptusplantage een kleinschalig toeristisch bedrijf heeft gemaakt, een paradijsje voor wie van rust en stilte houdt. Monte do Casarão ligt ver van de bewoonde wereld, midden in de natuur. Ver weg ook van alle nutsvoorzieningen met als gevolg dat Monte do Casarão zelfvoorzienend moet zijn op veel gebieden. Eén daarvan is de waterhuishouding. Uit twee bronnen op het landgoed wordt water opgepompt: de ene is 40 meter en de andere is 180 meter diep. De bron van 40 meter diep heeft goed water maar levert in het hoogseizoen niet genoeg. In die periode wordt de bron van 180 meter ingeschakeld. Het water daarvan is minstens honderd jaar oud en bevat veel mineralen, voelt vettig aan en smaakt niet zoals wenselijk is. Is voor de ondiepe bron het nu in gebruik zijnde zuiveringssysteem afdoende, voor de diepe bron is dat absoluut niet het geval. Het toeval wil dat een paar jaar geleden, in 2010 om precies te zijn, een oud-student Civiele Techniek van de TU Delft te gast was op Monte do Casarão. Beroepsmatig was hij uiteraard zeer geïnteresseerd in de stroom- en watervoorziening. Al snel kwam dan ook de kwaliteit van het water ter sprake en onze wens om die te verbeteren. Zou het niet mooi zijn als iemand een onafhankelijk, objectief onderzoek zou kunnen uitvoeren, iemand die zich in het onderwerp zou willen vastbijten, iemand die niet op voorhand in standaardoplossingen dacht? Was het eigenlijk niet een ideaal onderwerp voor een bachelor afstudeerproject? En dat in een zeer aantrekkelijke omgeving, in een geweldig land met een wel zeer aangename temperatuur? Een en ander resulteerde in correspondentie tussen de TU Delft in de persoon van professor Luuk Rietveld en ons met als gevolg een gedegen afstudeeropdracht in de vorm van een nieuwsbrief van Monte do Casarão. De nieuwsbrief had effect. In mei 2012 ontvingen we Michelle Loozen. Zij heeft de samenstelling van het water in beeld gebracht en aanbevelingen gedaan voor een zuiveringssysteem (zie Verbetering watervoorziening Monte do Casarão ). Omdat er nog een aantal onzekerheden en vragen bleven, is 7

8 door ons in 2013 besloten een vervolg te geven aan het onderzoek. Professor Luuk Rietveld was direct enthousiast en stelde uiteindelijk voor dan maar twee studenten te laten komen: Niels van Linden en Niels Harent. En dan niet één week, maar een week of drie, in de zomervakantie, de drukste periode op Monte do Casarão. Na enige aarzeling van onze kant (Wat moeten die knullen hier doen al die tijd, met alleen het geluid van vogeltjes om zich heen, geen kroeg in de buurt, geen vervoer?) die door de Nielsen werd weggenomen (Van Linden: Ik neem het project zeer serieus en ben dus ook niet van plan bij u vakantie te komen vieren, ik kom om aan het probleem te werken. Harent: Aangezien Niels (van Linden, red.) en ik elkaar goed liggen en wij beide harde werkers zijn denk ik zeker dat ik wat kan toevoegen aan het onderzoek en de uitvoering. Verder ben ik me er volledig van bewust dat mijn verblijf onderzoeksgericht zal zijn en geen vakantie. ) arriveerden ze juli 2013 op Monte do Casarão. Het is voor beide partijen alles meegevallen. Het was zelfs een heel gezellige en relaxte periode. Beleefdheidsperikelen werden snel getackeld. ( Eten jullie mee? Als, het niet te veel moeite is en we u niet in de weg zitten, graag. ) Eenmaal per week kookten de Nielsen voor ons en deden daarvoor inkopen. Tevens sloegen ze voor zichzelf een voorraadje in. Wat ze misten of wat op was, haalden ze uit onze koelkast. oog op garantie en onderhoud. Voorafgaand aan een en ander moest ook nog een opslag worden gebouwd. Het hele project liep wel enige vertraging op omdat niemand aanvankelijk in de gaten had dat er niet met hetzelfde meetsysteem werd gewerkt. Portugal hanteert namelijk het Franse systeem en Nederland het Duitse. Ook door miscommunicatie en omdat elk antwoord weer nieuwe vragen opriep, duurde het allemaal wat langer. Bovendien was de Portugese leverancier met vakantie. Begin december is het zuiveringssysteem geplaatst. Niels met (suiker in de koffi e) en Niels zonder hebben dus niet zelf kunnen zien hoe alles is aangelegd en hoe en of het werkt, helaas. Of het systeem doet wat we ervan verwachten, is natuurlijk de volgende vraag. Binnenkort zullen we het water door de desbetreffende instanties laten testen. De meeste mineralen zullen zeker verdwenen zijn, de smaak lijkt ook verbeterd. Even afwachten maar. En anders kunnen we altijd nog doen wat zowel in het rapport van Michelle Loozen als van Niels van Linden en Niels Harent als optie staat: het plaatsen van een omgekeerd osmosesysteem. Dan is er geen vuiltje meer aan de lucht. In het water dus. Drie weken hard werken (met af en toe een beetje vakantie, zoals een weekendje Albufeira) leverde een deugdelijk rapport met aanbevelingen op. Hoewel de Nielsen zich gefocust hadden op materiaal uit Nederland werd toch in gezamenlijk overleg besloten het hele zuiveringssysteem (ionenwisselaars, zakfilters, chloorbehandeling) in Portugal te kopen en te laten aanleggen door de plaatselijke leverancier, dit met het Met dank aan Prof. dr. ir. 9 Waste and Waiting in Paradise Marij Zwart / Raluca Olariu In rural Mozambique, infrastructure for clean water and sanitation in rural areas is either not present or in a very bad state. According to the Mozambique government, the core of the water and sanitation problem is the lack of trained local experts in the area of water and sanitation. In the context of the NICHE programme, the TU Delft is working together with ESUDER, a faculty of the Eduardo Mondlane University in Mozambique, to establish an educational program on water and sanitation in Vilankulo. By means of this educational programme, it is strived to contribute to the training of qualifi ed local water and sanitation professionals. a literal translation of blondie of the waste. I am sure that half of the town thought I was completely crazy and had no idea why I was so interested in their waste (my bad portugues did not help during the first weeks), this search for waste was still a perfect way to get to learn all sides of Vilankulo. In march 2013 I left Delft to start my 5 months project in Vilankulo, Mozambique. The goal of the project was to design and implement an installation that uses biogas as an energy source for the purifi cation of drinking water. The study is performed in collaboration with ESUDER, and after fi nalization of the 5 months, the installation was supposed to be used and managed by the students of ESUDER in order to gain experience with practical work. The fi rst phase of the project consisted out of the performing of an organic waste assessment in Vilankulo. So, in my fi rst weeks in this incredible beautiful sandy town on the coast of the Indian ocean, I was basically in search of waste. It was the best way to fi nd my way and get to know the people of Vilankulo, because I spend these weeks talking to all different types of people. I wanted to know who was producing organic waste in what quantities so I met the fi sher-families that produced waste in their dried-fish production, I met owners of hotels and restaurants, I met the marketpeople, the workers of the backeries and so on. Within my fi rst week I got the name Loira da Lixo, which is Figure 1 Starting-up of the bmp-test with the help of Filo Once I had an idea on the types of organic waste available invilankulo, I started with a bio-methane potential test. This is a test in order to measure how much biogas a specifi c type of waste can produce. Since the waste production in Vilankulo was actually by far not so large as I had expected (poor people really produce less waste and Vilnakulo does not have that much small industries either), I tested different combinations of the available waste. A bio-methane potential test is normally executed in a laboratorium, using all specifi ed equipment and installations, which of course were not available in Vilankulo. Basically it was doing lab work, without a lab. However, with the help of many new friends, at the end quite a realistic biogas production was measured. Once the bio-methane test ended, Raluca arrived. While I was already enjoying the waste, beaches, music 9

10 and people of Vilankulo, Raluca had been testing the membrane installation in Delft and prepared a box holding the bio-digester and membrane in order to send in to Mozambique. Once Raluca arrived (and had fallen in love with Vilankulo within a week) we started searching a brackish ground water well. ESUDER wanted the biogas digester at their new campus area, but the water quality was unfortunately too good there. Therefore, we started a new quest. After the waste, now we wanted bad ground water wells. Samples from most of the private wells in Vilanculos and surrounding villages were taken. The local people and the students from the University were very helpful. People offered their support without expecting anything in return. They would walk with us for hours in the burning sun looking for the next potentially bad well. with the installation left from the Netherlands (missing and broken parts of the pomp, unproffesional air-cargo company). When the box fi nally arrived in Maputo, we had to fi ght with the local bureaucracy. In order to collect the box from the airport the offi cers from the import/export department at the airport were asking a ridiculous amount of money to be paid as custom tax. Because the installation was not meant to make profi t, that customs tax was not supposed to be paid. However, to prove our educational goals a document from the ministry of education was required. By the time we had to return, that document did not arrive. It is very frustrating to know that you are not able to collect your property without paying a tax that is not supposed to be paid. It is also very frustrating to know that the whole little town of Vilankulo was ready so then once the tank would arrive, all students, contractors, friends and teachers were more than ready to collect and built the tank and to start producing biogas. However, with it s beaches, the music, the dancing and it s people, Vilankulo might be the best place on earth to spend time waiting on a box From all tested wells, only one well met the quality limits imposed by the law. That well was located in the beautiful island of Bazaruto, an amazing natural reserve island. People that benefi ted from that water did not even know that the water was drinkable; even more they did not take us seriously when we told them that the water is actually the best be found. Finally we found our required bad well, in a local fi sherman s and businessmen s yard. There was only one thing missing: the installation. Unfortunately, by the time we had to leave from Vilanculos, we were not able to see the installation there. 11 Prijzen/Grants Sustainable freshwater supply in urbanizing Maputo, Mozambique and also (un)treated wastewater is used with all health aspects (for producers and consumers) involved. NWO-WOTRO Urbanising Deltas of the World - Integrated Project Delta areas are more and more becoming dependent on water sources at a distance. In Maputo, clean water is extracted from the Umbeluzi, at a distance of km, with a capacity increasing from 60,000 to (the maximum of) 200,000 m3/d over the last 20 years. Growing demand forced the use of other sources. With the support of the World Bank water will be extracted from the Incomati river (Curumane dam) at a distance of 100 km with a planned capacity of another 100,000 m3/d. In the meantime more than 15% of the water from the Umbeluzi river is industrial, mainly for the aluminium smelter, Mozal (35,000 m3/d). These types of factories could also use alternative sources of water to alleviate the precious drinking water sources. Fresh water shortages in Maputo are identifi ed as a bottleneck for further development. Poor wastewater handling is characterised by the fact that only 10% of the produced wastewater in Maputo is collected and transported to a central wastewater treatment plant in the Infulene valley, consisting of stabilization ponds. These ponds are poorly operated and the wastewater is discharged in the estuary, polluting the environment. Incentives are lacking to better operate the system, while agricultural land and industry are surrounding the treatment plant. Over 75,000 people in Maputo directly depend on agriculture in the zonas verdes of the Infulene valley. These households not only produce for their own consumption, but the crops also fi nd their way to the local market. Irrigation of these crops is not regulated Safe water reuse offers great potential for reducing water shortages in urbanizing deltas. However, suitable technologies and approaches lack for sustainable reuse in the social setting in developing countries. Therefore, the overall objective of the NWO-WOTRO integrated project is to reduce water shortages in Maputo by enabling the local water sector to include water reuse in overall planning and design of the urban water system. To achieve this the research will focus on understanding and testing centralized and decentralized water reuse systems from a technological and social perspective. The reuse of centrally collected wastewater will be studied at the wastewater treatment plant in the Infulene valley (the only large scale treatment plant in Maputo). The goal is to turn this treatment plant into a profi table mine that produces clean water for irrigation and industry, energy by digestion of concentrated waste streams and sludge, and nutrients for agriculture. The reuse of decentralised wastewater will be studied in peri-urban areas, assessing and pilot testing the potential of reuse of domestic waters for small industries, urban agriculture and garden watering, leading to a reduction of the expensive drinking water use and the polluting wastewater fl ows. The two research projects will lead to reliable technologies, tools, models and approaches for local stakeholders who need water reuse strategies and solutions to develop this market. These stakeholders include Governmental organisations, Non-Governmental organisations and private operators, conform the approaches proposed in the Mozambican Water Policy. Within the research project mixed teams of Mozambican social science (2) and water technology 11

12 (2) PhD and Post-Doc (1) researchers will collaborate, institutionalising optimal multidisciplinary collaboration. Focussing on only Mozambican PhD researchers is part of the capacity building strategy that comprises different levels of education, stimulating, in addition to the proposed communication strategy, the uptake of the research in planning and implementation during the project period ( ) and thereafter. 13 Nieuwe manieren van rioleren Francois Clemens / Jeroen Langeveld / Ivo Pothof This project proposal addresses the transportability of domestic slurries, which is the missing link for future sanitation systems. Many investigators of future treatment concepts have claimed that a low dilution is beneficial for the treatment efficiency and essential for the success of future sanitation systems. But the minimum required dilution and other properties of domestic slurries (i.e. toilet fl ushing and biodegradable kitchen slurries) are yet to be determined. A preliminary assessment of transportation concepts for future sanitation systems shows that the most promising transportation concepts are single phase slurry transport (comparable to pressurized sewer transport systems drukriolering ) and a two-phase (air-water) transportation concept. The Dutch Foundation for Applied Research on Water Management and Wastewater Treatment (STOWA) has recently recommended to further investigate new black water transport concepts. Future domestic slurries are likely to contain a significant fraction (> 50%) of kitchen waste. A domestic slurry is a non-newtonian mixture of cohesive solids (faeces), fibers (toilet paper, hair, etc.), non-cohesive solids with a wide particle size distribution and relatively low density ( ~1200 kg/m3, kitchen waste from a grinder) and liquids (water, urine). A number of transportability issues for new sanitation concepts, related to the dilution, or equivalently the solids content, has been largely neglected. These include: 1. Rheological characterization of domestic slurries (i.e. black water and biodegradable kitchen slurries) as a function of solids content, including cohesive properties. 2. Transportability of domestic slurries as a single phase slurry or a two-phase (air-slurry) mixture in relation to the slurry dilution. 3. Feasibility of different transportation concepts (e.g. intermittent pressure transport, two-phase flow with air addition and air pressure) in relation to the scale of the transportation system and the dilution of different domestic slurries. Key elements in the Research proposal include: 1. Rheological characterization of domestic slurries, including cohesive properties, as a function of solids content, particle size and other parameters. To this end 500 samples of domestic sludges are analysed with respect to viscosity, cohesion, surface tension, density at two temperatures (10 and 20 degree Celcius). 2. Experiments on artifi cial sludges will be set-up and carried out in large-scale lab facilities (ALPHA loop at Deltares). The reasons for not using real life sludge in these experiments is that domestic sludges are not stable due to bio-chemical breakdown processes, repeatability of experiments and ARBOregulations 3. Development of a 1D multi-phase simulation model for the transportation of a domestic slurry. 4. A limited number verifi cation lab-experiments with real domestic sludges. 5. Monitoring of transient fl ow properties in the lab and possibly a full-scale vacuum sewer, resulting in slurry slug length, velocity, driving pressure per slug and possibly rheological properties in reality. 6. The transport of domestic slurries will be monitored in small-scale pilots (e.g. DESAH Sneek). These data, including flow regimes, pressure drop, void fraction and water content, will be used for model validation. We will assign two PhD students, one focusing on the experimental part of the project and developing a theoretical framework, based on which simulation software will be built.
