As Ryan and his entourage boarded their plane to leave, Temple gunmen ambushed them and killed five, including Congressman Ryan. While these murders were occurring, Jones gathered the member of the community together and told them that their enemies were everywhere and that the time had come to commit "revolutionary suicide". While his most trusted followers armed themselves and stood guard, others passed out Kool-Aid laced with cyanide. Jones instructed parents to first give the poison to their children and then drink it themselves. A few people tried to argue with Jones against mass suicide but were shouted down by the rest of the congregation. When authorities reached the scene the found the members of the congregation dead, lying in each other's arms. More than eight hundred people died that day by their own hand. The world was shocked and horrified by the events at Jonestown. How could people so mindlessly follow such a leader, conforming to his wishes and obeying his order to the extent that they killed their children and committed suicide?
