Departement of Information technology Jan Vandewege The role of turbulence and electric fields in the formation barriers and the establishment of impoved confinement in tokamak plasmas through intermachine comparisons Abstract: Investigation of the correlations between on the one hand the occurrence of transport barriers and improved confinement in the tokamaks TEXTOR & T-10 and Tore supra as well as on the smaller-scale tokamaks FT-2, TUMAN-3M and CASTOR, and on the other hand electric fields, modified magnetic shear and electrostatic and magnetic turbulence using advanced diagnostics with high spatial and temporal resolution. Department of applied Physics Guido Van Oost An activity-based approach for surveying and modelling travel behaviour. Abstract: The importance of the transportation area was evidenced by a report from several international organisations, which stated that the demand for transport services is expected to grow considerably as incomes rise, the trend toward urbanization continues and the process of globalisation moves forward. In order to meet this rising demand and because governments cannot afford to allow transport constraints to have a negative impact on the future competitiveness of their products, considerable future long-term investments are indispensable. In order to better guide and substantiate decisions of transportation planners, the use of traffic and transportation models is advocated. From an international research perspective, activity-based transportation models have set the standard for modelling travel demand. Despite the clear advantages of this type of models, they havent however been put into practice in Flanders. This project, coördinated by Prof. Geert Wets, director of IMOB (LUC), intends to develop an activity-based transportationmodel for Flanders. Its innovative in that it introduces computer-aided instruments for data collection on travel behaviour. Respondents travel behaviour will be recorded by a GPS-aid and questionned by computer. The model wil also be dynamic, so to more easily adapt to sudden changes in activities. The specific worktask of TOR consists in exploring how time budget data can be incorporated in the process of simulating travel behaviour. Besides IMOB and TOR, three other research groups participate to this project, namely the Urban Planning Group (TUEindhoven), VITO and Onderzoekscel Architectuur, Mobiliteit en Omgeving (PHL). Department of organic Chemistry (WE) Etienne Schacht Welcome Class for non-native newcomers (SO): basic principles of Dutch for newcomers. Abstract: Early 90s there was a growing realization that the number of foreign language students in the primary and secondary educationn due to the stream of refugees and migration, was increasing and would not stop. Therefore, the reception classes for newcomers (OKAN-class) was established. All young people between 12 and 18 years who have recently arrived in Flanders or Brussels and choose for Dutch education, can in separate classes for one school year,so they can learn Dutch as soon as possible. The objective is to let them enter in the education and discipline that most closely matches their individual capacities. In secondary education, the reception education exists of two parts: for one thing a reception year and for another the flow to and relief in the regular education. The reception year is very much focused on the acquisition of Dutch. For this reason, excluding the teaching hours of religion or non-denominational ethics, culture and religion or cultural considerations, in general, all teaching hours are used to teach Dutch. From the school year,in the context of the professionalization and the nature of the course Dutch, a new general course was created in the reception education: 'English for newcomers'. Center of Applied Linguistics Martine VERJANS Exploring market study: Towards a communication plan for Middle Class(offer Ref: ) Abstract: The city of Lommel wants to serve its middle class by creating a coherent policy to make joint communication efforts, which will increase the number of visitors -and hence potential buyers- of Lommel. Abstract: Classical electro-polishing methods have been already for a long time insufficient to produce all TEM samples, but now they do not even suffice for alloys. One then turns to the alternative of ion milling, but this induces a lot of damage to the remaining material. In order to minimize this damage, a dedicated approach has to be made, for which the experience from intentional radiations is certainly a big advantage. We propose a way to model this phenomenon and diminish its effects. The possibilities of 3D-stacking are analyzed. Context The consumer electronic market is mainly driven by cost reduction, which is facilitated by the increasing miniaturization of the transistors. More and more functionality is therefore integrated on the same die. This leads to the proliferation of single-chip radio implementations which are also called Systems-on-Chip (SoC). One of the most important drawbacks of such an implementation is the substrate coupling, an on-chip interference which is caused by the fast switching of the digital circuitry and is transported by the common substrate. This

7 interfering signal is injected into the substrate, propagates through the common substrate (this is why it is called substrate noise) and finally couples into the sensitive analog/rf receivers residing on the same die. This perturbation can severely affect the performance of these radios and can even lead to malfunction. Goal The purpose of this work is to give the analog designer a deep understanding about how substrate noise propagates through the substrate and how it couples into the analog circuitry. Method The propagation of substrate noise is complex and depends on the circuit layout. Therefore we propose to use a 3D field solver to predict the propagation of substrate noise. The isolation between the digital and analog circuitry can be enhanced by the use of guard rings. Different types of guard rings are investigated and guidelines are provided to help the designer to choose the guard ring that fits the best to his needs. Further, the different substrate noise coupling mechanisms in a single active device are revealed. Measurements and simulations point out that the importance of the coupling mechanism is determined by the resistance of the ground interconnect. To guarantee first silicon pass, it is mandatory to accurately predict the impact of substrate noise into the sensitive analog circuitry. To this end, a methodology is presented that combines both the strengths of the emerging 3D field solvers and the circuit simulators. A large number of examples such as a 5GHz wideband receiver are modeled with this methodology. All the examples are successfully validated with measurements. Finally, this PhD has explored the opportunity of 3D-stacking to reduce the substrate noise coupling. Measurements and simulations have pointed out that a 3D-SoC offers 10x better substrate noise isolation than a traditional 2D-SoC. 2 Electricity YVES ROLAIN Stephane BRONCKERS RADIOTECT : Ultra wideband radio application for localisation of hidden people and detection of unauthorised objects. Abstract: The RADIOTECT project was completed in June The project helped support four SMEs to become more innovative, to adapt their technologies, to develop transnational cooperation and to extend their cooperative relations. This was achieved in the specific area of wideband radio for the detection of hidden people and objects. All the SMEs are innovative in their own right and together they wish to bring new products to the market utilising a world patented technique for ultra wideband technology called the Maximum Length Binary Sequence technology and other specific knowledge. The SMEs required the support of leading universities as RTD providers in order to develop the best data extraction techniques for through wall and through dress imaging products, to advise on hardware development and in general to give a "push" to the development process with their expertise and capacity. The SMEs intend to sell products with results from the project to the security, rescue and other markets. There are a handful of organisations in the world that provide ultra wideband products most of which are in the USA. The support to the SMEs in the project helped to ensure that Europe continues to capitalise on the knowledge and expertise which it has for ultra wideband technology which is proving to be more and more suitable for varying applications. Electronics and Informatics HICHEM SAHLI ESTIMATE: A behavioural analysis and examination of environmental implications of multimodal transportation choice Abstract: In recent years awareness has grown that current aggregate urban development trends, as manifested in land-use patterns and transport systems, are simply not sustainable or desirable. An undeniable driving force behind these unsustainable development trends is the seemingly unbounded availability and popularity of the private car and the travel behaviour associated with car travel. Rising concerns over the continual growth of car use and the increasingly intolerable externalities have generated particular interest in how transport planning policies might at least moderate the pressures in growth in personal mobility and support the principles of sustainable development. For more sustainable travel behaviour to occur, transport planning policies might rely upon other forms of motorized transport which may act as a substitute for car-travel. Public transport is then an obvious choice, but it is important to have this type of transport clearly integrated in a well coordinated multimodal transport chain. For any multimodal transport chain to support the principles of sustainable development, it should (i) fulfil a social development role, it should (ii) support economic growth and development, and it should have (iii) environmental benefits. It is our goal within this project to pay attention to these three pillars of the concept of sustainability within a context of multimodal transport. A well established multimodal transport chain and public transport supports in a base-level mobility for all and overcomes social exclusion. However, the main question with respect to the fulfilment of a social development role is whether multimodal transport serves the interaction requirements of individuals. In order to understand the interaction requirement of individuals (and households) and of the forces at work on these interaction requirements it is important to estimate the demand for travel and quantify the important (causal) factors underlying this demand. To this end, we will consider travel to be a derived demand, derived from the need of individuals and households to participate in activities. We will perform this research in a context of activity-based approaches, which do not adequately capture the impact of multimodal transport make-up on activity and travel behaviour until now. The main added value of activity-based approaches is the ability to predict how individuals respond to planning policies which are commonly referred to as travel demand management (TDM) measures. Examples of such measures may be non-travel-related such as the spreading of peak-period travelling through relaxing working, school and shopping hours, but also direct travel-related measures are possible by providing an improved spatially available public transport system, or by pricing measures such as congestion charging. These measures will be implemented in an activity-based model and its sensitivity will be tested. To examine the second principle of sustainability, we need to have a detailed overview of all the costs and benefits of various TDM-measures. For this purpose we will rely upon a social cost-benefit analysis (SCBA). The SCBA-model is based on the theory of welfare economics, according to which the welfare of a society depends on the aggregate individual utility levels of all members of that society. In order to quantify the expected reduction in congestion costs, we need to introduce the concept of value of time. Stated-preference methods, whereby hypothetical questions are posed to travellers to gain information about trade-offs they would be willing to make, are commonly used to measure these time valuations. The combination of a social cost-benefit analysis with an activity-based model is of great importance. It allows us to differentiate the environmental

8 effects towards time and space, enabling to calculate the environmental and congestion costs. The environmental impact of multimodal passenger traffic will be assessed with the help of a multi-modal Ecoscore passenger model based on wellto-wheel emissions. The Ecoscore rating tool allows assessing the environmental impact of vehicles with different fuels and drive trains. Different types of pollution, such as green house gasses, air quality depleting emissions and also noise pollution, as well as their impact on different damage categories, effects on human health and on ecosystems, are integrated into a single environmental indicator. The weighting factors of the model allows to take into account policy priorities. The existing Ecoscore vehicle rating tool will be adapted to allow the environmental impact assessment of travels with different transport modes. The ESNA (European sensor network architecture) project makes development of wireless sensor network applications more effective by providing a standard architecture, technology and application-development guidelines, as well as proof-of-concept implementations. ESNA establishes wireless sensor networks as a technology discipline serving business needs. This is done in three ways: 1.By exploring and modelling detailed application requirements that drive technology development, 2.By exploring and further develop technologies for sensor network applications; and 3.By exploring methodology and business aspects of sensor networks.

Faculty of Applied Engineering Sciences Department of Textile technology Hannelore Biebaû Geert De Clercq Gregory Haezebrouck The study provides specific tools to make the most of opportunities for sustainable jobs and perpetuating the existence of an R&D knowledge cluster. Abstract: This economic and spatial analysis assesses employment and location strategy of R&D companies in the province of Oost-Vlaanderen based on business economic and geographical characteristics, using various techniques including cluster analysis and accessibility analysis. The study provides specific tools to make the most of opportunities for sustainable jobs and perpetuating the existence of an R&D knowledge cluster. Departement of Geography Frank Witlox Investigation of the ternary fission of Cm and Cf isotopes Abstract: The emission probabilities and the energy distributions of x particles and tritons emitted during the ternary fission of 244, 246, 248Cm(SF), 252Cf(SF), 243, 245, 247Cm(n,f) and 251Cf(n,f) will be determined. This will permit to determine the excitation energy on ternary fission characteristics and on the x-cluster preformation probability. Department of Physics and astronomy Denis De Frenne Cyrillus Wagemans Optimization and scaling-up of succinate production with E. coli to underpin a patent application Abstract: This project aims at elucidating the genes involved in the transport of succinate across the cell membrane of E. coli. Subsequently, the expression of these genes will be fine tuned in order to increase succinate production. Several other strategies such as the modification of byproduct formation and the glucose uptake rate will be evaluated too. The developed production process will be scaled up. Departement of Biochemical and microbial technology Wim Soetaert Marjan De Mey Jo Maertens Margriet Drouillon Implementation of innovative sustainable energy sources and their interaction with the distribution network Abstract: The project includes the analysis of innovative photovoltaic (PV) systems and a comparative technological study of grid-connected inverters. Further, the interaction between distributed generation and the distribution network will be investigated. Finally, an economical and technological feasibilty study will be carried out as function of the existing technologies and their impact on the distribution network. Departement of Electronics and information processing Alexis De Vos Modeling and performance analysis of ARQ protocols Abstract: The project aims at contributing to the contributing to the development of accurate stochastic models and associated analysis techniques to study the performance of various ARQ protocols (ARQ = Automatic Repeat request), and particularly to determine the throughput and the queueing behavior of the transmitter and receiver buffers. Also new protocols will be developed in order to improve the performance.
