Je spreekt het uit als sabbakoe, met de klemtoon op de laatste lettergreep. Sabaku is het Surinaamse woord voor reiger. In Suriname leven achttien soorten reigers, waarvan er vier sabaku worden genoemd. Deze kleine, sierlijke vogels zijn uitgerust met lange poten en een lange, krachtige snavel. De verschillende soorten leven vaak met elkaar samen. Bij zonsopkomst verlaten de sabaku s collectief de gemeenschappelijke slaapverblijven in de mangrovebossen langs de rivier. Een kolonie vliegende reigers biedt een indrukwekkende aanblik. Aan het eind van de dag keren de vogels opnieuw in groepen terug naar hun onderkomens voor de nacht. Het wit van hun veren steekt dan mooi af tegen het roze of purper van de avondhemel. Sabaku s zijn sociale vogels: ze slapen en broeden gemeenschappelijk. In Paramaribo vinden we een broedkolonie en slaapplaats van sabaku s langs de Surinamerivier aan de monding van de Van Sommelsdijckskreek. The stream of sabakus flying to their feeding grounds forms an impressive spectacle. At dusk, they return again in flocks to spend the night in the mangroves. The white wings of the sabakus then form a startling contrast with the pink or purple colour of the early evening sky. Sabakus are social birds. In Suriname, tens of thousands of sabakus breed and roost communally in the mangrove forests along the Atlantic coast. In Paramaribo, a breeding colony and nocturnal roost of sabakus, among which several snowy egrets, is found in the mangroves bordering the Suriname River at the mouth of the Van Sommelsdijckskreek. Geeft u borstvoeding drink dan zelf ook meer dan normaal. Geef uw baby bij start en landing een fopspeen of flesje met drinken, om de druk op de trommelvliezen te verminderen. Een ouder kind geeft u een zuigsnoepje of een stukje kauwgum. Zelf kunt u eventueel ook geeuwen of slikken om de druk te verminderen. ELEKTRONISCHE APPARATUUR In het vliegtuig mag u geen apparaten gebruiken waarin een zender of ontvanger zijn verwerkt. Radio s, mobiele telefoons, laptops en televisies werken namelijk storend op het gevoelige navigatiesysteem van een vliegtuig. HANDBAGAGE Iedere passagier mag één (1) stuk handbagage meenemen. Het moet van een dergelijk formaat zijn dat u het kwijt kunt onder uw stoel. De bergplaatsen boven uw hoofd zijn alleen bestemd voor lichte artikelen, zoals hoeden, mantels en andere lichte artikelen. In addition, radios, cellular phones, laptops and televisions disrupt the sensitive navigation system and are not allowed. HAND LUGGAGE Every passenger is allowed one (1) piece of carry on hand luggage that fits easily under the aircraft seat. 8 portrait TYPHOON ONDANKS SUCCESSEN BLIJF IK NEDERIG, DIENSTBAAR EN DANKBAAR Glenn de Randamie (Typhoon) De cirkel is rond Alles wat muzikant en rapper Glenn de Randamie (Typhoon) op dit moment aanraakt, verandert in goud. Zijn veelgeprezen laatste album Lobi Da Basi (Liefde Is De Baas) werd met talloze prijzen overladen waaronder zelfs een Edison voor het beste album van De inspiratie voor deze cd deed hij op tijdens een bezoek aan Suriname in Muzikaal en creatief zat hij op een dood spoor. Diep in het binnenland van Suriname zag hij een bord op een huisje hangen met de tekst Lobi Da Basi. Deze reis naar het land van zijn voorouders had een enorme impact op Typhoon die geboren en getogen is in Gelderland. Zijn bezoek aan Suriname betekende een keerpunt voor Typhoon. Mijn verhalen waren een beetje op. Ik had alles wel gezegd zowel in interviews als met mijn platen. Ik dacht: ik ga New Year s Eve is the perfect opportunity to meet old friends and to make ones! chillen in Suriname en onderzoek doen naar mijn familiehistorie. Pas toen ik weer thuiskwam, werd mij duidelijk wat het voor me betekende en kwam de inspiratie terug met het album Lobi Da Basi als resultaat. Over zijn laatste bezoek aan Suriname, waar hij een aantal spetterende optredens verzorgde met zijn band, is hij nog enthousiaster. Dit laatste bezoek heeft mijn kijk op het leven veranderd. Ik zie dingen in een ander perspectief. Typhoon komt uit een muzikale familie en is het jongere broertje van de rappers Blaxtar en O-Dog, en broer van de R&B-zangeres Dinopha. Hij behaalde in 2004 zijn vwo-diploma aan het Carolus Clusius College te Zwolle en won in datzelfde jaar de Grote Prijs van Nederland in de categorie R&B-Hiphop. Een eerste teken dat Typhoon over een ongelofelijk talent beschikte en een belofte was voor de toekomst. Die belofte heeft hij anno 2015 ruimschoots ingelost en Typhoon wordt door muziekkenners algemeen beschouwd als het beste wat Nederland op het gebied van hiphop heeft voortgebracht. Met optredens op de grootste festivals (Lowlands, North Sea Jazz) en een indrukwekkende performance in de Ridderzaal voor Koning Willem-Alexander en Koningin Máxima met het door hem zelf gecomponeerde nummer Van de regen naar de zon werd hij ook bekend bij het grote publiek. Typhoon maakte veel indruk met zijn ingetogen optreden in het kader van de viering van 200 jaar Koninkrijk der Nederlanden. Glenn de Randamie, geboren op de Veluwe en beroemd geworden in Zwolle, heeft Surinaamse roots die hij beter leerde kennen en waarderen tijdens zijn bezoeken aan zijn moederland. Let wel, zo laat Typhoon weten, ik hou van Nederland. Ik ben hier geboren en ben dankbaar voor wat ik hier door hard werken heb weten te bereiken. Maar ik ben ook ontzettend trots op mijn Surinaamse roots. Toen ik als zestienjarige voor het eerst voet op Surinaamse bodem zette, kwam ik echt als een toerist naar Suriname. Ik vond het leuk om mijn familie te bezoeken maar verder deed het me weinig. Maar elk bezoek daarna was telkens thuiskomen en toen ik ouder werd, ging ik Suriname enorm waarderen en deed ongelofelijk veel inspiratie op. Ik ging ook materiële zaken relativeren. Wat heb je nou eigenlijk meer nodig dan heerlijk onder een boom te genieten van de schitterende Surinaamse natuur en cultuur? De Suriname Rivier is magisch en inspireert enorm. De combinatie van Nederland en Suriname in mij inspireert en maakt mij spiritueel enorm rijk. Tijdens ieder bezoek aan Suriname vind ik weer een nieuw stukje van mijzelf terug, aldus Typhoon. Over het album Lobi Da Basi schreef een recensent: Zijn tweede album Lobi Da Basi wordt overal geprezen als een enorm rijk album. Het is een plaat met muzikale gelaagdheid en variatie en met een persoonlijk en universeel karakter. Het zit vol details die de plaat interessant maken. De rode draad door alle elementen is de invloed van Suriname op Lobi Da Basi. Een recensie om van naast je schoenen te gaan lopen. Maar sterallures zijn Typhoon vreemd. Dat zit in mijn opvoeding, legt hij uit, ik ben dankbaar voor alles wat ik heb bereikt en blijf dienstbaar en nederig. Om die reden was mijn laatste bezoek aan Suriname samen met mijn band, broers en zus zo emotioneel. Alles kwam samen. De ontvangst in Suriname was vol liefde en respect. Onze optredens zijn stuk voor stuk onvergetelijk. We hebben zelfs een optreden gegeven van meer dan 3 uur. Mijn langste concert ooit en aan het einde zat ik nog vol energie. Die energie koester ik en wil ik vasthouden. Ik heb hier weer zoveel nieuwe contacten en vriendschappen opgedaan dat ik popel om weer naar Suriname te komen, aldus Typhoon enkele dagen na zijn terugkomst in Nederland. His acclaimed album Lobi Da Basi (Love Is The Boss) received numerous awards, even including an Edison for best album of He got the inspiration for this CD during a visit to Suriname in Musically and creatively, he was at a dead end. Deep in the inlands of Suriname, he saw a sign on a house with the text Lobi Da Basi. This journey to the country of his ancestors had a huge impact on Typhoon, who was born and raised in the Dutch province of Gelderland. His visit to Suriname was a turning point for Typhoon. I had rather run out of stories. I had said pretty much everything both in interviews and through my records. I thought: I ll do some chilling in Suriname, researching my family history. Only when I got back, it became clear what it meant to me, and the inspiration returned, with the album Lobi Da Basi as a result. He is even more enthusiastic about his latest visit to Suriname, where he gave a number of spectacular performances with his band. This latest visit has changed my view of life. I see things from a perspective. Typhoon comes from a musical family, and is the younger brother of rappers Blaxtar and O-Dog, and his sister is R&B singer Dinopha. In 2004, he obtained his high school diploma at the Carolus Clusius College in Zwolle, winning the Grote Prijs van Nederland in the category R&B-Hip hop. The Suriname River is magical and very inspiring. The combination of the Netherlands and Suriname within me inspires, making me very rich, spiritually. During every visit to Suriname, I keep finding a piece of myself, Typhoon says. One reviewer wrote the following about the album Lobi Da Basi : His second album Lobi Da Basi is widely acclaimed as an enormously rich album. It s a record with musical layers and variation, and with a personal and universal touch. It s full of details that make the record interesting. The leitmotiv in all the elements is the influence Suriname had on Lobi Da Basi. A review to make one walk with one s head in the clouds. But Typhoon doesn t act like a star. That s because of how I was raised, he explains, I am grateful for everything I have achieved, and stay subservient and humble. For that reason, my latest visit to Suriname, together with my band, brothers and sister, was so emotional. It all came together. We were received in Suriname with a lot of love and respect. Each of our shows is unforgettable. We even gave a performance that lasted more than 3 hours. My longest concert ever, and at the end I was still full of energy. I cherish that energy and want to retain it. I found so many contacts and friends again here, I can t wait to come to Suriname again, Typhoon said a few days after his return to the Netherlands. 10 CASSAVE ONMISBAAR IN DE SURINAAMSE KEUKEN Culinary CASSAVA Cassave AARDVRUCHT IS VERRASSEND VEELZIJDIG Wat kun je met cassave bereiden? Als je van Surinaamse afkomst bent of al eerder in Suriname bent geweest, dan heb je nu al vier of meer gerechten bedacht. Best begrijpelijk. Cassave is onmisbaar in de Surinaamse keuken. Cassave is de eetbare wortelknol van een plant die vooral op savannegronden goed groeit. De wortel bevat veel zetmeel en is daardoor voedzaam. In Suriname heb je twee varianten van de cassave, namelijk de zoete en bittere cassave. De laatste bevat een giftig blauwzuur en kan daarom niet rauw worden gegeten. Na de oogst worden de wortels daarom vaak geschild, geraspt en met water uitgespoeld om het blauwzuur te verwijderen. Na het drogen worden ze verpulverd tot meel. De na de oogst geschilde zoete variant, die in water aan de kook wordt gebracht, is direct eetbaar. Cassave kan verwerkt worden tot verschillende gerechten en snacks. Cassave versus cultuur Hoe cassave bereid wordt, is afhankelijk van wie het maakt. Vanwege de diversiteit in cultuur heeft elke bevolkingsgroep een eigen manier van bereiding. Het Javaanse deel van de bevolking frituurt de cassave meestal tot dikke frieten. De teloh, zoals het gerecht bekend staat, wordt opgediend met pittige trie, groenten en soms pindasaus. De op deze manier klaargemaakte cassave is krokant en heerlijk. Een andere kenmerkende snack van cassave uit de Javaanse keuken is dukun*. Een zoetigheid van cassave, kokos en rozijnen gewikkeld in bananenbladeren. Verder behoren krupuk*, chips en pap ook tot het assortiment van snacks gemaakt van cassave. In de Creoolse keuken wordt de cassave bojo, een koeksoort, gebakken. In Creoolse warme maaltijden is de cassave ook te vinden. Heri Heri, een maaltijd die dateert uit de slaventijd, is heel bekend. Dit gerecht bestaat uit verschillende aardvruchten zoals cassave, rijpe en groene bananen, aardappel, napi, zoete patat, gezouten vis, groenten, een gekookt ei, peper en zuur. Creoolse soepen, zoals cassave- en de grietbanasoep, hebben cassave als belangrijk bestanddeel. Rijst kan vervangen worden bij soepen door cassave tom tom. De gekookte cassave wordt gestampt tot een soepele massa en er worden bolletjes van gemaakt die tom tom worden genoemd. De tom tom wordt ook gemaakt van gekookte groene of halfrijpe bananen. Bedoeld om met de vingers te eten en te gebruiken bij oker-, pinda- en erwtensoep. Binnenland In het binnenland is cassave het hoofdvoedsel voor de marrons en inheemsen. Zij gebruiken het meer in de vorm van bakakesaba of parakorantie, het zogeheten gebakken cassavebrood. Ook maken zij er kwak van. Hier wordt de cassavemeel als losse korrels droog gebakken. Het wordt veel op lange tochten meegenomen omdat het maanden houdbaar is. De marrons maken daarnaast nog kokori. Dit is een soort cassavemeel. Van de geraspte cassave wordt het vocht uitgeperst in een matapi en gedroogd boven de rook van een houtvuur. De bereiding is te vergelijken met de tom tom maar dan met kleinere balletjes die worden meegekookt in soep met vis of wild. Een aparte bruine saus is Kasripo die wordt gemaakt van het sap van de uitgeperste cassave. Verder is zeer bekend de dosi, een lekkernij van bakakesaba met gestoofde kokosnoot en soms met gestoofde ananas en gember erin. De inheemsen gebruiken voornamelijk de bittere cassave om kasiri te maken, een alcoholisch cassavebier. Tijdens maar ook na de afschaffing van de slavernij maakte men van cassavemeel stijfsel voor kleding. Het meeste wordt dit stijfsel gebruikt voor het stijven van de anjisa s en de verschillende soorten hoofddoeken die door de Creoolse vrouwen worden gedragen als zij de koto (Creoolse klederdracht) aan hebben. Fusies Tegenwoordig maken koks fusies van de traditionele cassavegerechten. Een voorbeeld is cassave puree dat lekker is opgeklopt met melk, margarine, zout en nootmuskaat. Of de cassavesla, een salade van kleine blokjes gesneden cassave, pompoen en gekookte eieren. Met een mayonaise dressing wordt dit alles gemengd met klein gesneden kousenbandjes. Top! Cassave is te vinden op de markt. Je zult de cassavewortel wel zelf moeten wassen en schillen. Tegenwoordig vind je voorgekookte en ingevroren cassave ook in de koeling van vrijwel elke supermarkt. 11 CASSAVA INDISPENSABLE IN SURINAMESE CUISINE Culinary CASSAVA Cassava TUBER IS SURPRISINGLY VERSATILE What can you cook with cassava? If you re of Surinamese origin, or you have previously visited Suriname, you ll have thought of four or more dishes already by now. Quite understandable. Cassava is indispensable in Surinamese cuisine. Cassava is the edible tuber of a plant that thrives mainly on savannah soil. The root contains a lot of starch, which makes it nutritious. In Suriname, there are two types of cassava, namely the sweet and bitter cassava. The latter contains toxic cyanide, and therefore cannot be eaten raw. That s why, after harvest, the roots are often peeled, grated, and rinsed with water to remove the cyanide. After having dried, they re ground up into flour. The sweet variety, peeled after harvest and cooked in water, is immediately edible. Cassava can be used to prepare a range of dishes and snacks. Cassava versus culture How cassava is prepared, depends on who s cooking it. Because of the cultural diversity, every population group has its own preparation method. The Javanese part of the population usually cuts the cassava into thick chips that are fried. The teloh, as the dish is known, is served with spicy trie, vegetables and sometimes peanut sauce. The cassava prepared this way is crunchy and delicious. Another typical cassava snack from Javanese cuisine is dukun*. A sweet treat of cassava, coconut and raisins wrapped in banana leaves. Krupuk*, crisps and porridge are some of the other snacks that are made from cassava. In Creole cuisine, the cassava bojo, a type of cake, is baked. Cassava can also be found in Creole hot dishes. Heri Heri, a dish that has its origins in the slavery era, is very famous. This dish consists of various tubers such as cassava, ripe and green bananas, potato, napi, sweet chips, salted fish, vegetables, a boiled egg, pepper and vinegar. Creole soups, like cassava and grietbana soup, have cassava as a main ingredient. Rice can be replaced in soups by cassava tom tom. The cooked cassava is mashed into a smooth mass, from which little balls are made, which are called tom tom. The tom tom can also be made from cooked green or half-ripe bananas. Meant to be eaten using your fingers, to be used along with ochre, peanut and pea soup. Inland In the inland, cassava is a staple food for the maroons and indigenous people. They use it more in the form of bakakesaba or para-korantie, the so-called baked cassava bread. They also make kwak from it, with the cassava flour being baked dry as loose granules. It is often taken along on long treks, since it can be kept for months. In addition, the maroons also make kokori. This is a type of cassava flour. The liquid is pressed out of the grated cassava, and dried in a matapi over the smoke from a wood fire. 13 Culinary STREET FOOD Come Back gegarandeerd! Als je gedurfd wilt snacken is streetfood een must-do. Dit fenomeen is al generaties onderdeel van de Surinaamse eetcultuur. Het aanbod is in de loop der tijd enorm toegenomen. Voor een betere introductie van streetfood is het handig te beginnen met een aperitief. Durf pittig gekruide lekkernijen aan, geserveerd vanuit een stalletje op wielen die het straatbeeld opvrolijken en zorgen voor een glimlach en een voldaan gevoel. Streetfood In Paramaribo en daarbuiten kun je langs de weg vanuit je auto een stuk warm vlees, bloedworst, fladder (runderpens) of bere kopen. De worsten zijn bereid in een warme bouillon met flink wat kruiden zoals ui, selderij en hete pepers. De verkopers staan in de volksmond bekend als de worstmannen. Door de jaren heen is het hen gelukt vaste klantengroepen op te bouwen van wie zij de voorkeuren kennen. Floyd Koulen is zo n worstman. Hij werkt in een vijftien jaar oude stand aan de Kasabaholoweg. De worsten die hij aan de man brengt, worden gemaakt door Slagerij Flora volgens een geheim familierecept. Dankzij de kwaliteit van hun worst is de onderneming uitgegroeid naar drie verkoopadressen. Ik verzeker mijn klanten van de come back. Hiermee garandeer ik ook goede kwaliteit en de hygiëne. Het is zo lekker dat je terugkomt, vertelt hij. Eerste gehaktballen Volgens Steven Dinmohamed, slager en eigenaar van Slagerij Stedin, is de verkoop van eten uit een pot langs de straat in de jaren 50 geïntroduceerd door een slager genaamd Wijngaarde. Hij verkocht als eerste gehaktballen uit een pot langs de Zwartenhovenbrugstraat. Ongeveer vijf jaar later werd bloedworst aangeboden in slagerijen. Dit bracht een geloofskwestie met zich mee. Moslims en Hindoes eten geen bloedproducten. Om deze groep tegemoet te komen, is de vleesworst ontstaan. Nu is het assortiment uitgebreid met visworst, sausages, eieren, kippenpoten, bere en fladder, zegt Dinmohamed. Slagerijmedewerkers, die bekend waren met de worstrecepten, zagen een mogelijke bijverdienste door worst aan de man te brengen vanuit de straat. Het aantal worstmannen is enorm toegenomen en zij letten sterk op de presentatie, smaak en kwaliteit. De warme worsten worden in stukjes gesneden en in een zak of bak aangeboden. Soms met wat hotsaus en zuurgoed erbij. De worst zit in een runderdarm die te dik is om door te slikken. Je knijpt de heerlijke vulling er dus het beste uit. Alhoewel, na lang kauwen net als op kauwgum wordt het vel steeds dunner en kun je het ook doorslikken. Eet smakelijk! Straatmenu Om de pittige smaak te neutraliseren, is schaafijs als streetdrink een verfrissend tussendoortje. Vanuit een karretje kun je een beker geschaafd ijs kopen met verschillende zelfgemaakte stropen zoals Tamarinde, Markoesa, Orgeade of Cola. Dit fleurige ijsje is perfect op een warme dag. Wil je het straatmenu ietwat uitgebreider, dan is een street intermediate course het advies. Wat je naast de worstverkopers zal opvallen, zijn de vele BBQ bordjes langs de weg. De verleidelijke geur van smakelijk, mals gebarbecuede kippenbouten, burgers, spareribs, saté en vlerken is bijna niet te weerstaan. De maaltijden worden opgediend met patat en koolsalade en afgemaakt met mayonaise, ketchup en pindasaus. Dit moet je proberen! Streetfood kenmerkt zich door de kwaliteit. Het is in veel gevallen verantwoord, hygiënisch en smaakvol. Daarnaast is de beleving belangrijk. 14 Culinary STREET FOOD Come Back garanteed! If you want to have an adventurous snack, street food is a must. This phenomenon has been part of the Surinamese food culture for generations. Over time, the range of available products has increased Streetfood enormously. For a better introduction to street food, starting with an aperitif is recommended. Don t be afraid to have spicy snacks, served from one of the portable booths that add colour to the streetscape, providing a smile and a satisfied feeling. In and around Paramaribo, along the road, from your car, you can buy a piece of warm meat, black pudding, fladder (beef tripe) or bere. The sausages are cooked in a warm broth with lots of herbs including onion, celery and hot peppers. The sellers are colloquially known as the sausage men. Over the years, they ve succeeded in establishing groups of regular customers whose preferences they know. Floyd Koulen is one such sausage man. He works in a fifteen year old stand at the Kasabaholoweg. The sausages he sells are made by the Flora butchery according to a secret family recipe. Thanks to the quality of their sausages, the company has grown to include three points of sale. I ensure my customers comeback. With this, I also guarantee good quality and hygiene. It s so tasty that you ll come back, he says. First meatballs According to Steven Dinmohamed, butcher and owner of the Stedin butchery, selling food from a pot along the streets was introduced in the 1950s by a butcher named Wijngaarde. He was the first to sell meatballs from a pot along the Zwartenhovenbrugstraat. About five years later, black pudding was offered in butcheries. This brought with it a religious issue. Muslims and Hindus do not eat blood products. To cater to this group, the meat pudding was developed. Now the product range has been expanded with fish sausage, sausages, eggs, chicken legs, bere and fladder, Dinmohamed says. Butchery employees, who were familiar with the sausage recipes, saw potential for earning extra cash by selling sausages out in the street. The number of sausage men has increased enormously, and they keep a close eye on presentation, flavour and quality. The warm sausages are cut into pieces and offered in a bag or tray. Sometimes with a bit of hot sauce and pickles on the side. The sausage is wrapped in beef casings, which are too thick too swallow. So you d best squeeze out the delicious filling. Although, after enough chewing just like chewing gum it will become thinner and thinner, and you can swallow it as well. Enjoy! Street menu To neutralize the hot flavour, shaved ice is a refreshing street drink. You can buy a cup of shaved ice from a stall, with various homemade syrups such as tamarind, passion fruit, orgeat or cola. This colourful ice cream is perfect on a hot day. If you want a somewhat more extensive street menu, your best bet is a street intermediate course. In addition to the sausage sellers, you ll notice the many BBQ signs along the road. The tempting smell of tasty, tenderly barbecued chicken legs, burgers, spare ribs, satay and wings is almost irresistible. The meals are served with fries and coleslaw and finished with mayonnaise, ketchup and peanut sauce. You just have to try it! Street food is characterized by its quality. In most cases, it s healthy, hygienic and tasty. In addition, the experience is important. The decoration and look of the vending booths says a lot about the atmosphere and the quality and taste of the food. 15 Information DO s & DONT s HANDIG OM TE WETEN GOOD TO KNOW In Suriname wordt Nederlands gesproken, maar dat wil niet zeggen dat alles er hier hetzelfde aan toe gaat als in Nederland. Handig om te weten wat je wel en wat je beter niet kunt doen. i ALGEMEEN Beleefd zijn is belangrijk. Spreek iemand die je niet kent in eerste instantie met u aan. Veel huizen hebben geen deurbel, roep in deze gevallen klopklop of rammel aan de poort. Als je bij iemand thuis op bezoek gaat, trek dan voor het binnengaan van de woning je schoenen uit. Een auto huren in Suriname is mogelijk, maar hou wel rekening met het wat chaotische verkeer, soms slechte wegen en het feit dat er links wordt gereden. + GEZONDHEID De zon is fel in Suriname, bescherm daarom je hoofd én je huid. Door bewolking of wind duurt het soms lang voordat je merkt dat je verbrandt. Controleer altijd of je malariatabletten moet innemen. Dat kan bij de GGD in Nederland of bij het Bureau Openbare Gezondheidszorg (BOG) in Suriname. Bij verblijf in een malariagebied is het verstandig om de huid vooral s avonds te bedekken, een product met deet te gebruiken en onder een klamboe te slapen. Krijg je na verblijf in een malariagebied last van hoofdpijn en koorts, meldt dit dan direct bij de huisarts. Gebruik je speciale medicijnen? Neem dan een reservevoorraad mee. De kans bestaat dat deze medicijnen niet voorradig zijn in Suriname. Een aantal internationale verzekeringen wordt geaccepteerd bij opname in de grote ziekenhuizen in Suriname. Het kan ook voorkomen dat je zelf bepaalde kosten ter plekke moet voldoen en deze bij aankomst in Nederland dient te declareren bij je verzekeringsmaatschappij. WATER Het kraanwater in Suriname is schoon en smaakt goed, maar informeer eerst of het wel kraanwater is! Niet iedereen is aangesloten op de waterleiding en regenwater kan vervelend vallen. Neem altijd een flesje water mee als je naar buiten gaat. Je verliest in de tropen meer vocht dan gewoonlijk, dus het is belangrijk voldoende te drinken. ETEN Het is verstandig altijd aan te geven of je ergens peper (sambal) bij wilt of niet. Surinamers eten over het algemeen vrij gekruid. Was groente en fruit voor consumptie en let op als je buiten de deur eet. Door de hoge temperaturen vermenigvuldigen bacteriën zich snel. BINNENLAND Neem bij een bezoek aan het binnenland altijd zwemkleding, zonnebrandcrème, hoedje of pet, anti-muskietengel met deet, lange broek en shirt met lange mouwen, regenjas en een zaklamp mee. Stop camera s en andere spullen die niet nat mogen worden eerst in een plastic zak voordat je in een bootje stapt of het bos in gaat. Souvenirs zijn overal verkrijgbaar in alle soorten en maten. Hou bij aankopen wel rekening met wat wel en wat niet in Nederland ingevoerd mag worden. Producten gemaakt van bijvoorbeeld schildpadschild, reptielenhuid of koraal zijn niet toegestaan. Wil je foto s maken van binnenlandbewoners of hun bezittingen? Vraag het dan eerst. Niet iedereen stelt het op prijs, en sommige culturen kennen een taboe op fotografie. Ga binnen een besloten gemeenschap nooit zomaar in je eentje op pad. In het binnenland is het gebruikelijk je eerst te melden bij de plaatselijke gezagsdrager. It s good to know what s allowed and what you d rather avoid. i GENERAL Being polite is important. Address people you don t know very politely. Many homes don t have a doorbell; in those cases call out klopklop or rattle the gate. When you visit someone at home, take off your shoes before you enter. You can rent a car in Suriname, but be aware of the somewhat chaotic traffic, bad roads and the fact that there is left-hand traffic. + HEALTH The sun is blazing in Suriname; therefore you must protect your head and skin. Because of the clouds and the wind it sometimes takes longer before you realize that you re getting burnt. Always check whether you have to take malaria tablets. Contact your local health authorities or the Bureau for Public Health Care (BOG) in Suriname.When you re in a malaria invested area, it s good advice to cover your skin especially in the evening, use a deet product and sleep under a mosquito net. If after your stay in a malaria area you get headaches and fever, please see your doctor immediately. Are you using special medicines? Take a spare supply with you.there s a chance that these medicines are not available in Suriname. A number of international heath insurances are accepted when you re admitted in one of the large hospitals in Suriname. Sometimes you have to pay cash for some procedures; upon your arrival in Holland you can ask for a reimbursement from your insurance company. WATER Tap water is clean and tasty, but always verify if it s really tap water. Not all households are connected to the water main, and rainwater could cause problems. Always take a bottle of water with you when you re going outside. In the tropics you loose more fluid than usual, so it s important to take in sufficient amounts of fluid. FOOD Always say whether you d like hot pepper (sambal) with your meal. Surinamese people usually like spicy food. Always wash vegetables and fruits before consumption and be careful when eating out.the high temperatures cause bacteria to multiply rapidly. INTERIOR When you visit the interior, always take along swimming clothes, sun block, hat or cap, mosquito gel containing deet, pants and long-sleeved shirt, raincoat and a flashlight. Store cameras and other articles that shouldn t get wet inside a plastic bag before you step into a boat or go into the forest. Souvenirs are for sale in all varieties and sizes. Before you buy, take into account what kind of goods may or may not be imported into the Netherlands. For instance, products made from tortoise shell, reptile skin or coral are not allowed. Do you wish to photograph native people or their belongings? Then ask them first. Not everyone appreciates it and some cultures consider photography taboo. When you are in a closed community, never venture out alone. In the interior it s the custom to first report to the local authority. Zomaar een selectie van plaatsen waar Peggy Tjin haar leven in de afgelopen jaren heeft doorgebracht. Als één van zeven kinderen groeide Peggy Tjin op in de wijk Zorg en Hoop in Paramaribo. Haar studie, werk en de liefde zorgden ervoor dat Peggy Tjin een echte wereldburger werd die zich in alle werelddelen thuis voelt, en dan vooral in de wereld van de jetset. Na onderwijzeres en model is Peggy nu een succesvol Global Food Critic met culinaire en lifestyle publicaties op haar internetsite die elke dag wereldwijd door tienduizenden mensen wordt bezocht. Een eenvoudig Surinaams meisje met grote ambities uit een gezin met zeven kinderen en voor wie het begrip kan niet geen optie is. Her studies, work and love caused Peggy Tjin to become a true global citizen who feels at home in all parts of the world, particularly in the world of the jet set. After having been a teacher and model, Peggy is now a successful Global Food Critic, with culinary and lifestyle publications on her internet site, which is visited by tens of thousands of people from all over the world each day. A humble Surinamese girl with big ambitions from a family with seven children, the word impossible isn t in her dictionary. That s how Peggy Tjin describes herself during one of her rare visits to her native country of Suriname. During her stay in Suriname, she has a jam-packed schedule with TV appearances, interviews with spapers and visits to Surinamese top restaurants she reviews for her culinary blog as Global Food Critic. She also contributes to the show So you think you can cook. Peggy was an ambitious girl who left for the Netherlands in the 1970s with her family, ending up in Breda.
