Prof. Mechoulam: Yes, it has already been shown that both cannabidiol (CBD), the major, non psychoactive constituent in cannabis, and THC have important therapeutic effects. They should be used in the clinic. Like all drugs their use should be well regulated.

35 MC VS OPIATEN IN YOUR OPINION, DO CANNABIS AND CANNABIS-BASED PRODUCTS HAVE PROVEN ADVANTAGES OVER OPIOIDS, IN GENERAL? Dr. Ethan B. Russo: There are situations in which opioids are superior, such as in acute traumatic pain, and situations in which cannabinoids are superior, such as chronic neuropathic pain. The two approaches are best combined in others. Dr. Jeffrey Raber: Absolutely. Far safer in many ways. Can't overdose with cannabis. No where near the addition potential or associated problems with cannabis either. Cannabis is exceptionally useful for many types of pain and should be the first-line choice for [chronic] pain management instead of opioids.

36 MC VS OPIATEN IN YOUR OPINION, DO CANNABIS AND CANNABIS-BASED PRODUCTS HAVE PROVEN ADVANTAGES OVER OPIOIDS, IN GENERAL? Prof. Roger G. Pertwee: Yes, e.g. because cannabis and cannabisbased products (1) have or are likely to have better efficacy or better benefit-to-risk ratios than opioids for some disorders and (2) are likely to ameliorate disorders not ameliorated by opioids. Prof. Raphael Mechoulam: Morphine is much more potent and general. Cannabinoids (mostly THC) are less potent and more specific. It should be possible to use both for various conditions.
