8 UTOPIA AN EXPERIMENTAL ART AND SCIENCE GARDEN FOR CHILDREN Professor Burvenich considers himself a lucky man. From a very young age his mother and aunt, grandmother, uncles, nephews, nieces and family friends all knew how to continually fire his enthusiasm for art and sciences. All children should be given that same opportunity: a chance to taste the beauty our world has to offer. Utopia, an experimental art and science garden for children wants to introduce the youngest residents of Ghent s city districts to passionate scientists and willful artists. Ghent University will therefore tour the 19th century streets of Ghent throughout the summer with a mobile workshop for children, packed with instruments of scientists and artists. Utopia refers to the ideal world of Thomas More, the ideal society towards which we all strive. Together we can make this happen! The realisation of an experimental art and science garden for children will undoubtedly contribute to their creative development and interest in art and sciences. The university community would welcome your support for this project set up by the Science Communication Unit of Ghent University via donation to the University Funds account: BE (BIC: BBRUBEBB). Please quote Utopia as a reference. If you donate 40 euros or more, you will receive a certificate of exemption for your personal income tax which will allow you to deduct 45% of your donation. UTOPIA EEN PROEFTUIN MET KUNST EN WETENSCHAP VOOR KINDEREN Prof. Burvenich beschrijft zichzelf als een geluksvogel. Moeder en tante, grootmoeder, ooms, neven, nichten en familievrienden wisten hem van jongs af aan dagelijks te enthousiasmeren voor het schone in de kunst en de wetenschappen. Alle kinderen zouden diezelfde ervaring moeten meekrijgen; de kans om te proeven van de schoonheid die de wereld te bieden heeft. Utopia, een proeftuin met kunst en wetenschap voor kinderen wil de jongste bewoners van de Gentse volksbuurten in contact brengen met gepassioneerde wetenschappers en eigenzinnige kunstenaars. Met een mobiel atelier boordevol creatieve en wetenschappelijke instrumenten zal de Universiteit Gent een zomer lang door de straten van de Gentse 19de-eeuwse gordel toeren. Utopia verwijst naar de ideale wereld van Thomas More, een maatschappij waar wij allen naar streven. Samen kunnen we dat verwezenlijken! De realisatie van een proeftuin met kunst en wetenschap voor kinderen zal ongetwijfeld bijdragen tot hun creatieve ontwikkeling en interesse voor kunst en wetenschap!
