3 Welcome Welkom Welcome to the Faculty of Social Sciences at VU University Amsterdam. While visiting us you will discover that our highly motivated academic staff and students make the Faculty a true and socially-inspired centre of teaching and research. It makes me proud to be its dean. In 1963 the Faculty was established by merging the Departments of Anthropology, Political Science and Public Administration, and Sociology. Since then the Faculty has expanded considerably, and nowadays we encompass six disciplines: Communication Science, Organization Science, Political Science, Public Administration, Social and Cultural Anthropology, and Sociology. We offer undergraduate and graduate programmes in all these disciplines. International programmes are also available, as are a two-year graduate programme in Social Research and an undergraduate honours pro- gramme. The Faculty fosters a climate of inspiration and challenge where students and academic staff are prepared to question their assumptions, to contribute to public debate, and to affirm their commitment to society. Our aim therefore is to be a centre for high-quality research in a motivational, stimulating and supporting environment. Tijdens uw bezoek zult u ontdekken dat onze gemotiveerde wetenschappers, docenten en studenten de faculteit tot een broedplaats maken van maatschappelijk betrokken onderzoek en onderwijs. Ik ben er trots op decaan te zijn. De faculteit is in 1963 opgericht met het samenvoegen van de afdelingen Antropologie, Politicologie en Bestuurskunde, en Sociologie. Sinds die tijd zijn we flink gegroeid en tegenwoordig huisvesten we zes disciplines: Bestuurskunde, Communicatiewetenschap, Organisatiewetenschap, Politicologie, Sociale en culturele antropologie, en Sociologie. We hebben bachelor- en masteropleidingen aan in alle zes disciplines, waaronder ook internationale programma s, een tweejarige master in sociaal-wetenschappelijk onderzoek en een bachelorhonoursprogramma. De faculteit biedt haar studenten en wetenschappers daarmee een inspirerende omgeving waarin zij worden uitgedaagd hun aannames kritisch te bekijken, deel te nemen aan het maatschappelijk debat en hun betrokkenheid bij de samenleving te tonen. 4 In the heart of society Middenin de samenleving The themes of teaching and research at the Faculty of Social Sciences emphasize its intimate commitment to society. They include the influence of new media and technology on people s well-being, the public role of religion, and security and citizenship. Our students are also part of that commitment. The Faculty is a community of learners where students and staff come together to deliberate on mutual and societal research questions and search for answers that are based on scientific inquiry. Connecting teaching and research An illustration of the close connection between teaching and research at the Faculty are the programmes in Public Administration. Both the Bachelor s and Master s programmes and the research programme centre around the themes of governance, integrity of governance, safety, security and the police, and work and income. Topics that are also firmly grounded in society. Recently graduated, Judith van der Veer, MSc (middle) is now a PhD candidate in Public Administration. During her studies she assisted in several Departmental research projects, and now she has embarked on her own PhD research project on the way cities, health care institutions and stakeholders work together to implement and coordinate optimal social services. Prof. Leo Huberts (left) is Department Chair, teaching courses in Public Administration and Politics and Administration Theory, and supervising research into political and administrative institutions, and the quality and integrity of governance. Emeritus Professor of Policy Prof. Hans van den Heuvel (right) still contributes to the research and teaching in Public Administration. As Department Chair he extended the teaching programme in Public Administration and associated fields of research to include the Organization Sciences, whereas the initial focus was primarily on politics. De thema s in het onderzoek en onderwijs van de Faculteit der Sociale Wetenschappen onderstrepen de aandacht die er is voor de betrokkenheid bij de maatschappij. Dat zijn bijvoorbeeld de invloed van nieuwe media en technologie op het welzijn van de mens, de publieke rol van religie, en veiligheid en burgerschap. Ook de studenten hebben daarin een rol. De faculteit is een community of learners waarin studenten en docent-onderzoekers samen nadenken over gemeenschappelijke en maatschappelijke onderzoeksvragen en antwoorden. Onderwijs en onderzoek met elkaar verbonden Dat het onderwijs en onderzoek aan de faculteit sterk met elkaar vebonden zijn, is te zien bij bijvoorbeeld Bestuurskunde. Dezelfde thema s als in het onderzoek komen terug in de bachelor- en masteropleiding: besturen in algemene zin, integriteit van bestuur, veiligheid en politie, en arbeid en inkomen. Nog niet zo lang afgestudeerd in de Bestuurskunde is drs. Judith van der Veer (midden) tegenwoordig junior-onderzoeker. Tijdens haar studie assisteerde Judith onderzoekers bij hun projecten. In haar eigen onderzoeksproject gaat ze in op de samenwerking tussen de gemeente, zorginstellingen en belangengroepen om de maatschappelijke dienstverlening zo goed mogelijk te organiseren. Prof.dr. Leo Huberts (links) is hoofd van de afdeling Bestuur en organisatie. Hij doceert vakken in bestuurskunde en politiek en bestuurskundige theorieën, en leidt onderzoek naar politieke en bestuurlijke organisaties, en de kwaliteit en integriteit van besturen. Emeritus-hoogleraarin Beleidswetenschappen prof.dr. Hans van den Heuvel (rechts) draagt nog steeds een steentje bij aan de studie van het besturen. Als afdelingshoofd verbreedde hij het onderwijs en onderzoek in Bestuurskunde in de richting van de Organisatiewetenschap, waar dat eerder vooral een focus had op de politicologie. 5 Hans van den Heuvel The beauty of the job is being able to work with and for others, not only within the research group, but also at international conferences, and in de lecture hall. It s a thrilling experience to rouse the students interest for a subject. Leo Huberts Even though my successors run the Department nowadays, I am still part of it all. I can still make a contribution to the study of governance, and I enjoy working together with my young colleagues. Judith van der Veer When I was a student I particularly enjoy ed the courses that combined the practical side of governance with normative questions about what good governance is. 6 Research The main focus of research at the Faculty of Social Sciences are the domains of religion, safety and security, diversity and integration, governance and conflict, networks and organizations, and new media and technology. To stimulate excellent and innovative research in the social sciences, all Faculty research programmes have been integrated in the Centre for Comparative Social Studies. Centre for Comparative Social Studies The Faculty s strengths are consolidated into a robust, cohesive whole in the Centre for Comparative Social Studies. The Centre accommodates strategic chairs, international Fellows, Faculty Fellows and miscellaneous grants. Moreover, the Centre educates and trains the next generation of researchers in the Faculty s graduate school and its Master in Social Research. Studying society Religion and migration are important themes in the teaching and research conducted at the Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology. For instance, the flowering of the charismatic Pentecostal church and the integration of Muslim immigrants in Western society have been included in the Department s research programmes and teaching curricula, together with themes like ethnicity, gender and power. Moreover, poverty and development issues as well as accompanying transformation processes are areas for special attention. The research of Edien Bartels, PhD (left), university lecturer, concentrates on Islam and Moroccan immigrants in the Netherlands and Europe. Her main topics are transcultural assistance, female circumcision, and forced marriages. University lecturer Lenie Brouwer, PhD (right) studies immigrants in the Netherlands. In particular she focuses on Moroccan-Dutch youth, and how using new media has an influence on the connection of migrants to their homeland. Onderzoek De domeinen religie, veiligheid, diversiteit en integratie, besturen en conflicten, netwerken en organisaties, en nieuwe media en technologie vormen de zwaartepunten van onderzoek aan de Faculteit der Sociale Wetenschappen. Om hoogwaardig en vernieuwend onderzoek te bevorderen, zijn alle facultaire onderzoeksprogramma s geïntegreerd in het Centre for Comparative Social Studies. Centre for Comparative Social Studies Het onderzoek aan de faculteit wordt gebundeld in het Centre for Comparative Social Studies. Het Centre huisvest strategische leerstoelen, internationale en facultaire onderzoeksfellows, en heeft diverse budgetten voor onderzoeksstimulering en -ondersteuning. Bovendien leidt het Centre de nieuwe generatie onderzoekers op in de tweejarige Master s in Social Research en het PhD-programma. De samenleving onderzoeken Religie en migratie zijn belangrijke thema s in het onderwijs en onderzoek van de afdeling Sociale en culturele antropologie. De bloei van de charismatische pinksterbeweging en de integratie van moslimimmigranten in de westerse samenleving staan bijvoorbeeld op de onderzoeks- en onderwijsagenda van de afdeling, naast thema s als etniciteit, gender en macht. Ook is er aandacht voor ontwikkelingsvraagstukken in verschillende continenten en de daarmee gepaard gaande transformatieprocessen. Het onderzoek van antropoloog dr. Edien Bartels (links), universitair docent, richt zich op de islam en Marokkaanse migranten in Nederland en Europa. Ze is gespecialiseert in transculturele hulpverlening, vrouwenbesnijdenis en gedwongen huwelijken. Universitair docent en antropologisch onderzoeker dr. Lenie Brouwer (rechts) bestudeert Marokkaans-Nederlandse jongeren, en hoe het gebruik van nieuwe media de binding van migranten met hun thuisland beïnvloedt. 7 Edien Bartels The European city of Sarajevo accommodates a population of mostly muslims. A very European kind of Islam has evolved there, different from the one you find in North Africa. We can learn a lot from researching this variety of Islam. Lenie Brouwer Anthropologists are kept quite busy here in the Netherlands. Since we use the method of participating observation, we mix with the people we study. For instance with migrant groups in the Netherlands, to learn about their view on Dutch society. 8 Research programmes The Centre for Comparative Social Studies accommodates nine discipline-specific research groups, based on the premise that interdisciplinary research will flourish when given a firm foundation in the relevant fields of scientific endeavour. It therefore fosters an atmosphere in which Faculty scientists look beyond the boundaries of their specific disciplines. Communication Science Message characteristics and receiver processes Prof. Peter Vorderer Investigates how people are influenced by media content, and the effects of media use on individuals, groups and organizations. Organization Science Cultural changes in organizational networks Prof. Heidi Dahles Studies the cultural processes in and between (trans- national) organizations and networks, from anthro- pological and organizational perspectives on culture. Strategizing for opportunities Prof. Peter Groenewegen Studies individuals and teams in organizations, how networks are used within and between organizations, and the role of organizations in institutional change processes. Political Science Multi-layered governance in Europe and beyond Prof. Kees van Kersbergen Looks into the emergence of a complex European multi-layered polity, and transnational politics. Public Administration Dynamics of governance Prof. Leo Huberts and Prof. Willem Trommel Undertakes multidisciplinary research into the dynamics of governance of organizations primarily in the public sector. 9 Interfaculty research institutes The Faculty of Social Sciences joins in four interfaculty research institutes at VU University Amsterdam, recently established to stimulate interdisciplinary research inside the university. Center for Advanced Media Research Amsterdam (CAMeRA) CAMeRA is an interdisciplinary research centre that focuses on social, cultural, and psychological aspects of new technology and communication. Scientific director: Prof. Peter Vorderer of Communi- cation Science. Research Institute for the Heritage and History of the Cultural Landscape and Urban Environment (CLUE) CLUE is a centre of expertise on urban and rural heritage in the Netherlands and in the rest of Europe, studying the economic, cultural and academic dimensions of cultural heritage. Faculty representative: Department of Public Administration and Organization Science. The Network Institute (NI) The NI s research mission is to come to a better academic understanding of the emerging networked world in all its technological, economic and social aspects, and to help further its proper development. Faculty representatives: Departments of Communi- cation Science, and Public Administration and Orga- nization Science. VU Institute for the Study of Religion, Culture and Society (Visor) In Visor, anthropologists, historians, theologians and philosophers work together to gain a deeper insight into the role and position of religion in society. Programme leader: Prof. Birgit Meyer of Cultural Anthropology, in particular the study of religion an identity. Social and Cultural Anthropology Constructing human security in a globalizing world Prof. Birgit Meyer Investigates what security means to people, and how they try to realize that themselves through cultural, symbolic and religious processes of sense-making, meaning and identity formation. Sociology Comparative Stratification Research Prof. Harry Ganzeboom Studies patterns of social inequality and social mobility in cross-national and historical perspectives. Social conflict and change Prof. Ruud Koopmans Investigates the relationship between social change and social conflicts from a comparative perspective. The social context of aging Prof. Theo van Tilburg Looks at the networks of personal relationships of people in their third or fourth phase of life, and contributes to knowledge on the community and on civil society. The study of philanthropy Philanthropy and volunteering in civil society Prof. Theo Schuyt Studies the content and determinants of philanthropic efforts at individual, organizational and policy-making level. 10 Student initiatives The Faculty has its own student association, EOS. The association was established in 1996 and is wholly run by students. EOS puts on a number of events for its 1,300 members each year, including lectures by experts in the field, workshops, job fairs, parties, cultural excursions and sports activities. Education The Faculty of Social Sciences educates students to become skilled professionals and academics who are committed to society. Point of departure is the student s curious and questioning attitude. The Faculty incorporates the students from the start of their Bachelor s in its community. The FSC represents students at the Faculty level and participates in policy-making processes. The council defends the interests of students and is charged with monitoring the quality of teaching. The Faculty publishes a journal called Essay. It is produced by students and distributed among students and staff members at the Faculty of Social Sciences. Essay includes articles on the teaching and research going on at the Faculty and human interest stories. It also provides a wealth of information on all kinds of topics. Onderwijs De faculteit leidt goede professionals en bekwame wetenschappers op die betrokken zijn bij de maatschappij. Centraal staat het principe van het onderzoekend leren. 11 International collaboration The Faculty works together with universities in the regions of South Africa, Brazil and Southeast Asia. Special programmes have been set up to bundle activities in the areas of research, publications, student and teacher exchange and seminars/workshops. The Paulo Freire Programme (Brazil, 2003) Several Brazilian universities are part of this programme for exchanging Bachelor s students, Master s students, and PhD students. It also promotes international cooperation in research. South Africa - VU University Amsterdam - Strategic Alliances (SAVUSA, 2002) This alliance was developed to actively encourage academic cooperation between faculties at VU University Amsterdam and universities in South Africa by facilitating scientific publications on both staff and student level. Southeast Asia-VU University Amsterdam alliance (SEAVU, 2005) SEAVU is a network of universities that selected religion, politics and good governance, and trans- national networks as themes for collaborative research activities. Student exchanges are also part of the programme. Methodology An important component of the academic development of the students are their research skills. The Faculty can boast of an internationally renowned Department of Social Research Methodology. The Department s staff members are engaged in both education and independent research. Pre-Master s courses The Faculty designed pre-master s programmes for those students who need to gain additional know-how before they can enter the Master s proper. It provides students from diverse backgrounds with the academic skills and substantive knowledge they need to participate successfully at Master s level. Minor Bachelor s students have the opportunity to spend a semester or two abroad, on a work placement in the Netherlands or further afield, or on a minor. The Faculty offers minors that emphasize social commitment, such as in the multidisciplinary thematic minors Culture, Religion and Diversity, Entrepreneurship and Philanthropy. Alumni The well-being of students continues to be of the Faculty s concern even after their graduation. The Faculty therefore offers its alumni a network to keep in touch with each other and staff members. The yearly reunion, faculty alumni newsletter and website serve to strengthen the network ties. Multidisciplinary minor in Entrepreneurship The VU Centre for Entrepreneurship provides a platform where a number of faculties and university institutes can join forces for research and teaching on the subject of entrepreneurship. The Centre offers a multidisciplinary minor in Entrepreneurship that focuses on entrepreneurship as an economic, social and cultural phenomenon, and emphasizes themes such as social innovation, social responsibility and societal application and relevance. Onderzoeksvaardigheden Een belangrijk onderdeel van de academische vorming zijn de onderzoeksvaardigheden. De faculteit kent een afdeling Methoden en technieken die op het gebied van onderzoek nationaal en internationaal hoog staat aangeschreven. De docenten en onderzoekers van de afdeling verzorgen zowel onderwijs als onderzoek. Premasterclass De faculteit heeft premasterclasses ontwikkeld voor studenten die extra kennis nodig hebben voordat ze kunnen instromen in een masteropleiding. De premasterclasses leggen de nadruk op het aanleren van academische vaardigheden en kennis, en stellen daarmee studenten met een hbo-diploma of een andere achtergrond in staat een opleiding op masterniveau te volgen. Minor Bachelorstudenten kunnen een gedeelte van hun studie benutten voor studie in het buitenland, stage in binnen- of buitenland, of een minor. In de minors die de faculteit aanbiedt komt de maatschappelijke betrokkenheid duidelijk tot uiting, zoals in de multidisciplinaire thematische minors Cultuur, religie en diversiteit, Filantropie, en Ondernemerschap. Alumni Ook na het afstuderen wil de faculteit haar studenten iets blijven bieden. Daarom krijgen alumni de mogelijkheid om via het facultair alumninetwerk contact te houden met elkaar en met medewerkers van de faculteit. 12 Unique teaching programmes The Faculty s commitment to society is reflected in its teaching. A number of programmes that are unique to the Faculty of Social Sciences at VU University Amsterdam are specifically devoted to contemporary social topics, like the Master s programme in Sociology of Diversity and Globalization, which examines the consequences of globalization among individuals and groups. An exclusive combination is the expertise on management and organizations with scientific insights into culture, identity and power in the international Master s programme in Culture, Organization and Management, and in the specialization Organization Anthropology of the Bachelor s programme in Cultural Anthropology. Moreover, the turbulent field of international security and peace is studied in the interdisciplinary Master s programme in Law and Politics of International Security. Education in safety and security The Master s programme in Public Administration has two unique tracks. Governance of Third Sector Organizations focuses on strategic management and policy development within social organizations, and the track Governance of Safety and Security concentrates on complex matters of safety and security and the way in which public and private security organizations deal with them. Expert in the field of governance of safety and security is Prof. Hans Boutellier (left). He holds an endowed chair in Security and Citizenship, and specializes in public ethics, security, crime, police and the judiciary, the social function of criminal law, and the implementation and coordination of security. Ruth Prins, MSc (middle) is a student in the Master s specialization in Governance of Safety and Security. She already holds a Master s degree in Public Administration, and is pursuing her second Master s by studying security. Ruth also participates in the Security and Citizenship research group. The coordinator of the endowed chair in Security and Citizenship is Ronald van Steden, PhD (right). He is a lecturer in the same Master s specialization, and researches security and the police. Unieke opleidingen Ook in het onderwijs komt de betrokkenheid met de samenleving terug. Een aantal unieke programma s richt zich heel specifiek op actuele maatschappelijke onderwerpen, zoals de masteropleiding Sociologie van diversiteit en mondialisering, die de gevolgen van mondialisering voor individuen en groepen mensen onder de loep neemt. Op een uitzonderlijke manier worden kennis over management en organisaties gecombineerd met sociaal-wetenschappelijke inzichten in cultuur, identiteit en macht in de internationale master Culture, Organisation and Management en in de variant Organisatieantropologie binnen de bachelor Culturele antropologie en ontwikkelingssociologie. Ook het roerige gebied van internationale vrede en veiligheid krijgt aandacht in het onderwijs, in de interdisciplinaire master Law and Politics of International Security. Onderwijs in veiligheidskwesties De master Bestuurskunde heeft twee speciale maatschappelijke varianten. Besturen van maatschappelijke organisaties richt zich op strategisch management en beleidsontwikkeling bij maatschappelijke organisaties. De variant Besturen van veiligheid behandelt complexe veiligheidsvraagstukken en hoe organisaties als de politie en beveiligingsbedrijven daarmee omgaan. Expert op het gebied van het besturen van veiligheid is prof.dr. Hans Boutellier (links). Hij is bijzonder hoogleraar Veiligheid en burgerschap en is gespecialiseerd in de publieke moraal, veiligheid, criminaliteit, politie en justitie, de maatschappelijke functie van het strafrecht en de organisatie van veiligheid. Drs. Ruth Prins (midden) is student in de master Besturen van veiligheid. Ze heeft al een master Bestuurskunde afgerond en wilde zich nog verder verdiepen in het thema veiligheid, waar deze master zich bij uitstek voor leent. 13 Ruth Prins The teaching covers more than just the principles of safety and security. We also look at avenues for practical application. As part of a course on physical security we held questionnaires among citizens in a town that was cut off from power for several days to study how they manage disasters. Hans Boutellier Research and teaching in security and safety are of great importance. For instance in the collaboration between people and organizations. We also analyze the causes of unsafe conditions and other risks, and people s reactions to them. Ronald van Steden The field of safety and security is professionalizing rapidly. The government, as well as firms and non-profit organizations therefore need highly educated people that can survey the full sphere of action. 14 Talent Talented students are provided with special opportunities for further development. VU University Amsterdam offers the Bachelor Honours Programme, for example. The honours track goes beyond the regular programme and is reserved for the university s best students. A number of top-ranked researchers from the Faculty teach themes in the honours programme that reach outside the scope of Faculty-specific domains. Students who intend to pursue a career in advanced social research are the target of the two-year Master s programme in Social Research. The programme teaches them the principles and practices of qualitative and quantitative research methodologies, and offers a multidisciplinary perspective on the social sciences. The Faculty also offers a PhD programme. It trains PhD students on an individual basis to become independent, fully qualified researchers in the social sciences. The training consists of a combination of courses offered at the Faculty and courses offered by a number of (inter)national disciplinary networks and associated research schools. Passion for social research One of our students in the Master s programme in Social Research is Bianca Suanet, BSc (right). She specializes in social gerontology, and conducted a small research project within the Longitudinal Aging Study Amsterdam, a long-term study among Dutch people aged 55 and older. Bianca focused on the question of why the new generation of older people play a more active role in society than the older generation did. Bianca s supervisor, Marjolein Broese van Groenou, PhD (left) is a senior lecturer at the Department of Sociology, and a researcher at the Longitudinal Aging Study Amsterdam. Her specializations are in the personal networks of elderly people, their socio-economic health differences, and the care they receive from their partners and children. Marjolein emphasizes that the students projects are a true addition to the ongoing research projects. Talent Getalenteerde studenten kunnen zich op verschillende manieren verder ontwikkelen. De Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam biedt bijvoorbeeld een honoursprogramma bovenop het reguliere bachelorprogramma voor haar beste studenten. Toponderzoekers van de faculteit verzorgen daarin onderwijs in thema s die over facultaire grenzen heen gaan. Voor studenten die meer wetenschappelijke diepgang zoeken in hun studie is de tweejarige internationale onderzoeksmaster in Social Research opgezet. Die leidt studenten op in de theorie en praktijk van kwalitatieve en kwantitatieve onderzoeksmethoden, en biedt een multidisciplinair perspectief op de sociale wetenschappen. Een vanzelfsprekende vervolgstap na de onderzoeksmaster is een aanstelling als assistent-in-opleiding aan de universiteit. De faculteit traint haar jonge onderzoekers in wat zij nodig hebben om bekwame sociaal-wetenschappers te worden. De training bestaat uit een combinatie van cursussen bij de faculteit en bij een aantal (inter)nationale vaknetwerken en gelieerde onderzoeksscholen. Passie voor sociaal-wetenschappelijk onderzoek Een van onze studenten in de master Social Research is Bianca Suanet (rechts). And I really enjoy the fact that there is more emphasis on research than in other programmes. Marjolein Broese van Groenou The Master s students in Social Research can really work on their future. For their projects, they can collect data themselves, or use the large datasets that are already available. 16 Strategic alliances Strategisch samenwerken When scientists get together and engage in debate, new and revitalized concepts and methodologies are the product. Interdisciplinary collaboration is the idea behind this motto at VU University Amsterdam. The Faculty of Social Sciences recognizes these efforts, and also engages in international and other strategic collaborations. Interdisciplinary cooperation The Faculty s Centre for Comparative Social Studies has recruited highly talented researchers to occupy strategic chairs. These chairs have an interdisciplinary character and develop innovative programmes of comparative research. Moreover, with interfaculty research institutes VU University Amsterdam wishes to stimulate interdisciplinary cooperation between its Faculties. The Faculty of Social Sciences joins in these efforts when research themes from other faculties mesh with social sciencespecific research. The Faculty participates in four interfaculty research institutes of VU University Amsterdam. The Center for Advanced Media Research Amsterdam, the Research Institute for the Heritage and History of the Cultural Landscape and Urban Environment, The Network Institute, studying the networked world, and the VU-Institute for the Study of Religion, Culture and Society. New media in various disciplines The Center for Advanced Media Research Amsterdam studies the influence of new media on individuals and society. Its scientific director is Prof. Peter Vorderer (right), also Chair of the Department of Communication Science. He specializes in media users exposure to communication content and on media effects, in the context of entertainment, new technologies and video games. Matthijs Pontier, MSc (left) and Ghazanfar Farooq Siddiqui, MSc (middle) are working together on an interdisciplinary PhD project in CAMeRA. The project deals with the modelling of human emotions in virtual agents. Matthijs has a background in Psychology and Artificial Intelligence, and Ghazanfar in Computer Science, which makes the project fundamentally interdisciplinary in nature. Waar wetenschappers elkaar ontmoeten en met elkaar in discussie gaan, ontstaat inhoudelijke en methodologische vernieuwing. Met dit motto zet de Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam nadrukkelijk in op interdisciplinaire samenwerking. De faculteit herkent die ambitie en zoekt ook internationaal en buiten de academische wereld naar samenwerkingspartners. Interdisciplinaire samenwerking Bij het Center for Comparative Social Studies van de faculteit zijn vijf strategische leerstoelen opgezet. The additional focus on collaboration with academic institutions in other countries gives our research a strong international character. Matthijs Pontier and Ghazanfar Farooq Siddiqui One of our subprojects is to build a virtual therapist for an online self-help programme, an animated face that shows empathy with the users. For this project we implement models from behavioural and social sciences in computer applications. And we work together with clinical psychologists. 18 Partner universities disciplinaire karakter geeft. International collaboration The Faculty not only supports interdisciplinary research, but also international collaboration. International relations at the Faculty include teamwork with partner universities world-wide to bundle activities in the areas of research, publications, student and teacher exchange and seminars/workshops. Moreover, several international research fellows are affiliated with the Centre for Comparative Social Studies. They participate in master classes, other coursework and the supervision of PhD students. They also coach members of the Department who are working on drafts for international publications and they regularly engage in joint research and writing. Studying in the Netherlands The Faculty offers several international teaching programmes, one of which is the Master s programme in Political Science. It focuses on politics in our age of globalization. One of our international Master s students in Political Science is Letshani Ndlovu, BSc (right), from Zimbabwe. She chose the programme at VU University Amsterdam for its focus on both comparative politics and international relations. Monique van der Linden (middle) works at the Faculty s International Office. She takes care of all kinds of facilities for international students, like accommodations, visas, insurance, bank accounts, and even rides from the airport. Responsible for curriculum development and the internationalization of the Political Science programme is Prof. Henk Overbeek (left). He is a Professor of International Relations, and specializes in international political economy, transnational relations and global governance. Internationale samenwerking Naast interdisciplinair onderzoek wordt ook internationale samenwerking gestimuleerd. De faculteit onderhoudt daarvoor betrekkingen met universiteiten in het buitenland om activiteiten op het gebied van onderzoek, publicaties, studenten- en docentenuitwisseling en seminars/workshops te bundelen. Bovendien heeft het facultaire Center for Comparative Social Studies internationale onderzoeksfellows aangetrokken. Zij spelen een rol in masterclasses, begeleiden junior-onderzoekers, coachen leden van de afdeling in het schrijven van internationale publicaties en zijn betrokken bij gezamenlijk onderzoek en publicaties. Internationaal studeren in Nederland De Faculteit der Sociale Wetenschappen biedt verschillende Engelstalige opleidingen aan, waaronder de master Political Science. De master leert studenten de politiek in deze tijd van globalisering beter te begrijpen. Een van onze internationale Political Science masterstudenten is Letshani Ndlovu (rechts), uit Zimbabwe. Ze koos voor Political Science aan de Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam omdat de opleidiing zich richt op zowel de vergelijkende politiek als internationale betrekkingen. Zij regelt alles om internationale studenten te kunnen laten studeren aan de faculteit, zoals hun aanmelding en inschrijving, woonruimte, visum, verzekering, bankrekening en de opvang bij aankomst op het vliegveld. Verantwoordelijk voor de ontwikkeling van het onderwijsprogramma en het internationaliseren van Political Science aan de Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam is prof.dr. Henk Overbeek (links). 20 External partnerships The Faculty has entered into alliances with social organizations to encourage fruitful research synergies on topics that are based in society. For example, the Faculty works together with the Socio and Cultural Planning Office, the Firebrigade, Police and Municipality of Amsterdam and the Netherlands Demographic Institute. Most of these alliances are represented at the Faculty by endowed chairs. Furthermore, the Faculty collaborates with other Dutch universities and research institutes in overarching research schools. Examples include the Netherlands Institute of Government (NIG) and the Amsterdam School for Social Science Research (ASSR). These alliances are primarily in place for PhD students. Capacity building in Cambodia The Cambodia Research Group represents a joint effort between Dutch, Cambodian and Thai academics with the aim of putting together a research programme in order to contribute to local capacity building. The group is in close collaboration with international and Cambodian NGOs, Cambodian government, diaspora groups, business associations and other stakeholders. At the Department of Culture, Organization and Management, Prof. Heidi Dahles (right) is a Professor of Organization Anthropology, with a special focus on the ethnography of organizations. She has initiated talent programmes in Cambodia, including PhD and Master s programmes, mainly intended as training for entrepreneurship. The primary purpose behind these efforts is to contribute to reconstruction and further development of the country. Gea Wijers, MSc (left) is a lecturer at the same Department, and she supervises students who are writing their Bachelor s thesis, or doing research in Cambodia. She specializes in how Cambodian remigrants make use of social entrepreneurship to have a positive effect on Cambodian society. Electoral compass Kieskompas BV ( electoral compass ) is set up by Associate Professor in Political Science, André Krouwel, PhD. He developed an on-line application during the Dutch parliamentary elections of 2006 that helps voters discover which political party bests suits their own political views. The successful launch was soon followed by other applications, including one for the US presidential elections, an educational website that gives young people the opportunity to explore their own political orientation, and the EU Profiler, an application for the European parliamentary elections in Kieskompas BV works together with the media, publishing houses and other European organizations that produce voting aids. Partners buiten de universiteit De faculteit werkt samen met onderzoeksinstituten en maatschappelijke organisaties om onderzoekssamenwerking in maatschappelijke kwesties te stimuleren. De groep werkt nauw samen met internationale en Cambodjaanse NGO s, de Cambodjaanse overheid, de diaspora en bedrijven, en andere belanghebbenden. Hoogleraar Organisatieantropologie prof.dr. Heidi Dahles (rechts) van de afdeling Cultuur, organisatie en management bestudeert in het bijzonder de etnografie van organisaties.
