1 NL De jonge Belgische kunstenaar Wouter Feyaerts (1980, Brasschaat) neemt met 452 plakkaten de Kunst Nu-ruimte van S.M.A.K. bijna volledig in. De ruimte wordt letterlijk ingepakt, haast claustrofobisch geïsoleerd. De plakkaten worden aangebracht in een dichte rasterstructuur, als een tegelwand. Naar aanleiding van deze tentoonstelling voerde Wouter Feyaerts (F) een correspondentie met kunstcriticus Wim Van Mulders (VM). In dit boekje worden enkele citaten uit het gesprek gelicht, zonder echter te raken aan de geest van de correspondentie. De citaten werpen een aantal vragen en bedenkingen op waar beiden mee worstelen, de één als kunstenaar, de ander als criticus: het is een fragmentarische duiding van een totaalkunstwerk. De integrale dialoog werd opgenomen als cruciaal onderdeel van het gelijknamige kunstenaarsboek, dat werd gerealiseerd als een samenwerking tussen S.M.A.K., Bluebird Conspiracy en Galerie Transit. VM ( ) Je maakt een grote reeks plakkaten. Een plakkaat bezit verschillende betekenissen: poster, aanplakbiljet, affiche, ordonnantie, bevelschrift,... maar ook oorveeg of slag. 2 vaardigt in 1520 een plakkaat uit tegen de geschriften van Luther. Het zijn verordeningen uitgevaardigd onder een opgedrukte zegel. De term plakkaat werd gebruikt voor een overheidsvordering zodat elke burger van de inhoud kennis kon nemen. Die plakkaten hingen aan het gemeentehuis of zoals men nu zegt in de openbare of publieke ruimte : dus leesbaar (hoewel, wie kon er lezen in 1520?) of zichtbaar voor iedereen.( ) In de veronderstelling dat een kunstenaar zijn tijd uitdrukt of vertegenwoordigt, hoe situeer je jouw abstracte composities met toegevoegde icoonachtige beelden, labels en (soms) een lapidaire tekst? Kan ik dit interpreteren als een individueel onderzoek naar codes en hun eindeloze dubbelzinnigheid? ( ) F ( ) Plakkaten hebben een spannende dubbelheid. Ze zijn zowel ingezet geweest vanuit de macht als vanuit de underground, het verzet. Het is een middel van het establishment maar ook van het anti-establishment. 3 een vereiste om ze in de macht te tonen. ( ) Het gebruik van bedrieglijke slogans, iconografische en plastische elementen uit de reclame- en verpakkingswereld is tevens een manier om de macht die op mij (en bij uitbreiding op gans de maatschappij) wordt uitgeoefend te counteren, te bufferen, te filteren, bij te sturen. Het gaat over macht en onmacht, individu tegenover groep ( ). Ik heb zelf het gevoel dat ik dingen uit de vulgariteit wil evacueren, dingen die waardeloos geacht worden wil herwaarderen. Revalideren is hierin een mooie term omdat revalideren wijst op het beter worden, op krachten komen maar er zit ook valideren in. Ik maak hiermee geen aanklacht tegen de consumptiemaatschappij maar probeer op deze manier wel om er mee om te gaan, om perspectieven te doen kantelen en schuiven. Schoonheid genereren waar de samenleving het al lang opgegeven heeft. Hoop vinden waar niemand hoop ziet. Ik werk met verworpen, verbannen, verloren en gevonden voorwerpen, dozen of verpakkingen. ( ) ( ) De plakkaten zijn zeker geen doetjes of aaibare charmeurs. Integendeel zelfs, het is een behoorlijk obscuur en brutaal werk in zijn geheel, waarin zowel boven- als onderhuids een aanmoediging naar ethiek, stijlvolheid en waardigheid schuilgaat. Er is een groot verschil tussen schofterigheid en brutaliteit. Ik ervaar de brutaliteit die ik (niet zo zeer bewust) hanteer als een voertuig om mijn werk op te laden en de intensiteit te verhogen. De kwantiteit van de plakkaten is hierin één facet. Het maniakale karakter van die massa zegt niet alleen iets over mij als maker maar is even goed een manier om vraag- en uitroepteken bij elkaar te plaatsen. ( ) VM ( ) Je passus over ethiek verrast mij. ( ) Je associeert ethiek met stijlvolheid en waardigheid en dat siert je. ( ) Je griezelt voor een uiterlijke schijn daar dingen nooit zijn wat ze op het eerste gezicht lijken. Die spanning tussen een zuivere natuur en hoe we door de beschaving verminkt en vervormd worden klinkt door in je schrijven en denken. ( ) Ik zou graag ingaan op je materiaalgebruik. 4 Je zei dat de plakkaten veeleer tekeningen zijn en geen schilderijen. ( ) F ( ) Als ik de plakkaten eerder als tekeningen dan als schilderijen zie, wil ik daarmee niet alleen de snelheid en het suggestieve benadrukken maar ook het informele naast het formele plaatsen. De tape is naast een afbakening ook een instrument om te reduceren, te isoleren, te verbergen of herbergen. Over de tape zal nog een laag boekbinderslijm komen, een transparante glazuur: de verzegeling van de ordonnantie en tevens een manier om het moment te verstillen, te versterken en te bewaren. ( ) Ik ben naast een wandelaar met mijn voeten in de buitenwereld, ook een wandelaar in tape. Na al die jaren met tape werken, zijn de kilometers die ik in plakband heb afgelegd al veel meer dan een grote wereldreis. ( ) Zonder dat ik autobiografisch hierover moet uitweiden, ben ik de eerste om te (h)erkennen dat mijn werk een persoonlijke wandelstok is voor mijn eigen leven. Maar naast dit persoonlijke belang probeer ik ook een hand te reiken naar de buitenwereld toe. ( ) Er zijn altijd blinde vlekken maar door het werk te maken en te tonen probeer ik die te ontmantelen, zowel voor mezelf als voor anderen. ( ) VM ( ) De relatie massacultuur en hoge cultuur loopt als een rode draad door de geschiedenis van het modernisme en bij nader inzien ook door je monumentale plakkatenwerk. ( ) Kunst stelt vragen bij ingesleten patronen. Massacultuur bevestigt die patronen juist. ( ) Kan men bij jou pastiche, parodie, hommage, karikatuur, citaat, ontlening en toe-eigening nog van elkaar onderscheiden? Beelden worden nochtans analytisch opgebouwd met eindeloze meters plakband waartussen zich stripachtige figuren en korte uitdrukkingen en citaten wringen. ( ) Toen Kurt Schwitters zich de techniek van de assemblage en materiaalcollage had toegeëigend, schreef Arp een ironische commentaar: Wat voor de Griekse goden nectar en ambrozijn waren, dat was voor Schwitters de lijmpot. 5 transformeert zich bij jou in kilometers kleefband. Het woekerende karakter van de Merzbau gaat over in de slierten kleurige plakband die in vele lagen over elkaar heen aan elkaar gelast worden. ( ) De stigma s van de wereld worden dicht gekleefd in de hoop dat het kleven geen pleister op een houten been is. ( ) F ( ) Ik overtreed zeer veel regels en ik veeg mijn voeten aan heel veel codes, maar toch doe ik dit niet out of the blue of per ongeluk. Wanneer ik ergens mijn voeten aan veeg, is het om met propere schoenen ergens binnen te wandelen. Vraag me niet waar ik precies binnen wandel want een agnost kan hier enkel ik weet het niet op antwoorden. ( ) De macht wordt op verschillende manieren gehanteerd en aangeraakt in de plakkaten. Naast de historische benadering van het fenomeen (bekendmaking van wetten, propaganda instrument, maar even goed aanklacht middel), is het voor mij ook een vorm om de kleine dictator in mij te laten gaan en bestaan, zonder dat het drammerig wordt of is - dat hoop ik dan alleszins. Het wordt gevaarlijk als de plakkaten louter als reactie-instrument worden bekeken. ( ) Ik werk in het atelier en werk daar dagelijks. Het is langzaamaan een tweede natuur geworden.( ) Intuïtie is iets dat dagelijkse training verreist zodat denken en doen samenvallen, samenwerken, samen-zijn, zonder elkaar de das om te doen. Ik geef gerust toe dat mijn werk op een bepaalde manier ook Mystiek is. ( ) Het leven heeft al de uitnodigingen in zich om de ogen definitief te sluiten, cynisch en verbitterd te worden. De kunst bestaat erin de ogen open te houden, ontvankelijk te blijven, om verwonderd te kunnen zijn. Dit is mijn levensambitie maar ik nodig iedereen uit onder andere met de plakkaten en zonder belerend of moralistisch te zijn om dit aan te gaan. ( ) De plakkaten zijn zowel politiek als religieus. Het herhalende karakter van het raster, de veelheid en de gelijktijdigheid zullen hopelijk naast een directe ervaring ook een contemplatieve ervaring oproepen, eentje waar je licht duizelig van wordt. 6 VM ( ) De ruimte in S.M.A.K. werkt vermoedelijk als een immens, veelkleurig glasraam waarbij we ontwapend, overmeesterd, bezworen en van onze taal beroofd worden. Het volle licht van je plakkaten suggereert een controle die bescherming biedt. Je maakt een abstract architectonisch en optisch model dat geldt als een totaal maatschappelijk lichaam. ( ) Men kan stellen dat macht uitsluiting is. Concreet: vandaag hanteert men het criterium van de productiviteit. Al of niet arbeiden, fungeert als scheidslijn tussen insluiting en uitsluiting. Zo wordt leegloperij beschouwd als de voornaamste bron van wanorde en sociale onrust. De gek incarneerde het dier in de mens. Gek doen of zijn werkte ook besmettelijk volgens sommigen. ( ) F ( ) Gek is gek wat gek genoemd wordt - of het citaat van Dostojevski: De psychiatrie is een monoloog van de rede over de waanzin die enkel op zwijgen kan gebouwd zijn. ( ) Ik heb voor mezelf zeer lang de kantlijn gecultiveerd en bejubeld vanuit een toch wel ambitieuze zolderkamerromantiek ( ). De Marge heeft mij toegelaten te doen wat ik moest doen. Ik durf gerust zeggen dat het zijn prijs en offers meer dan waard was en is. ( ) De marge heeft mijn persoonlijke revalidatie (in alle betekenissen) mogelijk gemaakt en mij gesterkt om mij als individu tot de samenleving en dus ook tot de kunstwereld te kunnen verhouden. De mechanieken van samenleving en kunstwereld zijn trouwens zeer nauw verbonden. ( ) De kudde heeft geen lef. Het feit dat dit project in S.M.A.K. mijn werk op een bepaalde manier legitimeert, zegt vooral iets over die mechanieken. Dat het werk daar nu ook op inspeelt, is voor mij een evidentie. Almacht en Onmacht wonen hierin dichtbij elkaar. ( ) ( ) Zoals je de praktijk van het maken van de plakkaten beschrijft zit daar geen heldendaad aan vast. Doch de wens om met kunst te overleven vertoont een bijzondere ambachtelijke heroïek. Het is weifelen en beslissen en zonder andermans hulp is het dus tevens een hyperindividueel offensief. 7 je plaats in de maatschappij onzeker en tot op zekere hoogte onbezet. ( ) Zovele plakkaten maken lijkt op de uitbarsting van een epidemie die de kijker besmet en hem/haar en plein public met irritatie en gêne opzadelt. ( ) Het hangt van de souplesse van de toeschouwer af of het beeld tot stralen en spreken komt. ( ) VM ( ) De plakkaten zijn in zeker zin een glasraam, een donker glasraam waarin het licht en de transparantie op meta-niveau door schemeren. En ja het is vreedzaam, het is humaan, het is met liefde maar ook met balorigheid en met vrijpostigheid. Het is zeker ethica, verder nog, het is ethica meets esthetica. 8 EN The young Belgian artist Wouter Feyaerts (1980, Brasschaat) almost completely fills the Kunst Nu space at S.M.A.K. with his 452 placards. The space is literally packed, insulated in a way that is almost claustrophobic. The placards are arranged in a dense grid structure, like a tiled wall. In the context of this exhibition Wouter Feyaerts (F) had an correspondence with art critic Wim Van Mulders (VM). Several excerpts from their dialogue are highlighted in this booklet, but without changing the spirit of the correspondence. The quotations raise several questions and considerations that both of them struggled with, one as an artist, the other as a critic: it is a fragmented interpretation of a total work of art. The whole dialogue has been included as a crucial part of the artist s book, which was produced as a joint venture by S.M.A.K., Bluebird Conspiracy and the Transit Gallery. VM ( ) You are engaged in making a major series of placards. Placards can be used for many purposes: decoration, entertainment bills, official decrees, warrants but (in Dutch) also a box on the ear or a blow. When I was studying art history I learnt about the placards of the sixteenth century. In 1520 Charles V issued a decree in placard form against the writings of Luther. They carried an overprinted seal. The placards were used for government orders so that every citizen could read their contents. These placards were put up outside the town hall or, as the phrase now goes, in the public space : meaning available for everyone to read (although how many people could read in 1520?). ( ) Assuming that an artist expresses or represents the times he is living in, how would you situate your abstract compositions with their added icon-like images, labels and (sometimes) a laconic text? May I interpret this as an individual investigation into codes and their endless ambiguity? ( ) EN SMAK_Feyaert.indd 8 22/11/11 12:57

9 F ( ) Placards have an exciting ambiguity. They have been used both by those in power and the underground, the resistance. They are a tool of the establishment but also of the anti-establishment. For this series to function optimally as a whole, it had to be displayed in a place of power. ( ) Moreover, the use of deceptive slogans, iconographic and visual elements from the world of advertising and packaging is also a way to counter, buffer, filter and steer the power that is exercised over me (and by extension over society as a whole). It is all about power and powerlessness, individual against group. ( ) I myself feel that I would like to evacuate extract things from vulgarity, and reassess things that are considered worthless. A good term to use here is revalidation as it suggests becoming better and regaining strength, but it also contains the verb to validate. This is not an indictment of the consumer world, but an attempt to deal with it, to overturn it and change perspectives. To generate beauty where society EN SMAK_Feyaert.indd 9 22/11/11 12:57

10 has long given it up. To find hope where no one sees it. I work with objects that are rejected, exiled, lost and found, pieces of boxes, of packaging. ( ) ( ) The placards are certainly not just a soft touch or endearing charmers. On the contrary, this is a fairly obscure and bold work as a whole, and both above and below the surface conceals an encouragement towards ethics, stylishness and dignity. There is a big difference between beastliness and boldness. I experience the boldness that I use (not so consciously) as a vehicle for charging up my work and boosting its intensity. The number of placards is only one facet. The maniacal nature of this massive quantity not only says something about me as a creator but is just as much a way of bringing the question mark and the exclamation mark together. ( ) VM ( ) Your passage on ethics surprised me. ( ) You associate ethics with stylishness and dignity, and that is to your credit. 11 since things never are what they first appear to be. This tension between a pure nature and the way we have been mutilated and deformed by civilisation rings out in your thinking and writing. ( ) I would like to discuss the materials you use. Does that adhesive tape have an added value? You said that the placards are drawings rather than paintings. ( ) F ( ) If I regard the placards more as drawings than as paintings, I do so not just to emphasise the aspects of speed and evocation but also to juxtapose the informal and the formal. The tape is a demarcation as well as a tool to reduce, isolate, conceal or harbour. The tape will be covered with a layer of bookbinder s glue, a transparent glaze: the sealing of the decree as well as a way of bringing the moment to rest, and reinforcing and preserving it. ( ) Apart from being a walker with my feet in the outside world, I am also a walker in tape. After all these years of working with tape, the miles that I have covered in tape far exceed an extended trip around the world. ( ) Without elaborating on this autobiographically, I am the first to recognise that my work is a personal walking stick for my own life. However, apart from this personal interest, I also try to reach out to the outside world. ( ) There are always blind spots, but by creating and displaying the work I try to eliminate these, both for myself and for others. ( ) VM ( ) The relationship between mass culture and high culture runs like a thread through the history of modernism and on reflection through your monumental placard works too. ( ) Art questions embedded patterns. Mass culture confirms these patterns. ( ) Is it still possible to distinguish pastiche, parody, homage, caricature, quotation, borrowing and appropriation in your work? The images are after all analytically composed using endless metres of adhesive tape between which wriggle cartoonlike figures and short sayings and quotes. 14 material collage, Arp wrote an ironic comment: What was nectar and ambrosia to the Greek gods was for Schwitters the gluepot. ( ) In your work, Schwitters gluepot is transformed into kilometres of adhesive tape. The rampant nature of the Merzbau becomes the ribbons of colourful tape that are spliced together, overlapping in many layers. ( ) The world s stigmas are taped over in the hope that it is not a pointless exercise. ( ) F ( ) I may violate many rules and wipe my feet on many codes, but I do not do this out of the blue or by accident. When I wipe my feet on something, it s to make sure I enter somewhere with clean shoes. Don t ask me to describe the places I enter, as the only answer an agnostic can give you here is I don t know. ( ) Power is used and alluded to in different ways in the placards. Apart from the historical approach to the phenomenon (publication of laws, as a propaganda tool, but also a means of indictment), it is also a way for me to free the little dictator in me, without it becoming or being insistent. 15 ards are viewed purely as an instrument of reaction. ( ) I work in the studio and do so every day. It has gradually become second nature to me. ( ) Intuition is something that needs to be exercised daily so that thinking and doing coincide, work together and can be together without destroying each other. I do feel that there is a certain Mysticism in my work. ( ) There is so much in life that invites you to permanently close your eyes, and become cynical and bitter. The trick is to keep your eyes open, to remain receptive so that you will be astonished. This is my life s ambition and I invite everyone including the placards and without being preachy or moralistic to follow suit. ( ) The placards are both political and religious. It is to be hoped that the repetitive nature of the grid structure and its multiplicity and simultaneity will, apart from a direct experience, also evoke a contemplative experience, one that makes you feel slightly dizzy. ( ) VM ( ) The space in S.M.A.K. probably acts as a huge, many-coloured stained-glass window in whose presence we are disarmed, overcome, enthralled and robbed of words. The full light of your placards suggests a control that offers protection. You make an architectural and optical model that counts as a complete social body. ( ) One might say that power is exclusion. To put it in concrete terms, the criterion used today is that of productivity. To work or not to work, this creates the dividing line between inclusion and exclusion. In this light, idling is seen as the chief source of chaos and social unrest. The lunatic embodied the animal in man. Some people said that being or acting mad was infectious. ( ) F ( ) Madness is what you call mad, or, to quote Dostoyevsky: The language of psychiatry, which is a monologue about madness, has been established only on the basis of such a silence. ( ) I myself have long cultivated and celebrated the sideline on the basis of the quite ambitious romantic idea of the artist in his attic. 16 do. I can safely say that it has been well worth the price and sacrifices it entails. ( ) The sideline facilitated my personal rehabilitation (in all senses) and gave me the strength as an individual to relate to society and therefore also to the art world. The mechanics of society and the art world are also very closely linked. ( ) The herd has no guts. The fact that this project in S.M.A.K. gives a certain legitimacy to my work says something about those mechanisms. And the fact that the work now responds to this is self-evident as far as I am concerned. Omnipotence and impotence are closely connected here. ( ) VM ( ) The way you describe the making of the placards, there is nothing heroic about it. Yet the wish to survive by means of art has an extraordinary craftsmanlike heroism. It is a matter of wavering and taking decisions and, with no help from anyone else, it is therefore also an utterly individual offensive. 17 unoccupied. ( ) Making so many placards looks like the outbreak of an epidemic that infects the viewer and saddles them with irritation and discomfiture in full public view. ( ) Whether the image radiates and expresses something depends on the viewer s flexibility. ( ) F ( ) In a sense the placards are like a stained-glass window, a stained-glass window through which light and transparency shine on a meta-level. And yes, it s peaceful, it s humane, it contains love but also petulance and audacity. It is certainly ethics, but even more than this, it is ethics meets aesthetics. 18 FR Le jeune artiste belge Wouter Feyaerts (1980, Brasschaat) investit presque entièrement avec ses 452 placards l espace Kunst Nu du S.M.A.K. La salle est littéralement emballée, confinée dans un isolement presque claustrophobe. Les placards sont appliquées dans une structure dense de grille, comme une paroi de carreaux. Wouter Feyaerts (F) a mené en vue de cette exposition une correspondance de mails avec le critique d art Wim Van Mulders (VM). Quelques citations de leurs entretiens sont reprises dans ce carnet, sans toutefois révéler l esprit de la correspondance. Les citations soulèvent un certain nombre de questions et de réflexions qui ont occupé les deux hommes, l un comme artiste, l autre comme critique d art : c est une interprétation fragmentaire d une œuvre d art totale. Le dialogue intégral a été transcrit comme un élément vital du livre d artiste, fruit d une collaboration entre S.M.A.K., Bluebird Conspiracy et la Galerie Transit. VM ( ) Tu réalises une grande série des placards. Le mot plakkaat peut avoir plusieurs significations : poster, pancarte, affiche, ordonnance, avis... mais c est aussi une claque, un coup. Pendant mes études d histoire de l art, j ai découvert des placards du dix-septième siècle. Charles-Quint fit publier en 1520 un avis contre les écrits de Luther, des ordonnances sous sceau. Le terme placard était utilisé pour un avis des autorités à la population. Ces placards étaient exposées devant la maison communale ou comme on dit aujourd hui, dans l espace public : elles étaient donc lisibles (mais qui savait lire en 1520?) ou visibles par tous ( ). En supposant qu un artiste exprime ou représente son époque, comme situes-tu tes compositions abstraites contenant des images iconiques, des étiquettes et parfois un texte lapidaire? Est-ce que je peux y voir une recherche individuelle des codes et de leur ambiguïté constante? ( ) FR SMAK_Feyaert.indd 18 22/11/11 12:57

19 F ( ) Les placards ont une ambiguïté intéressante. Elles ont servi aussi bien la cause du pouvoir en place que des rebelles, des résistants. C est une arme pour l establishment mais aussi pour l anti-establishment. Pour que cette série fonctionne de manière optimale dans sa totalité, il fallait la montrer au pouvoir. ( ) L utilisation de slogans trompeurs, d éléments iconographiques et plastiques de l univers de la publicité et de l emballage est aussi une manière de contrer, de filtrer et de dévier le pouvoir qui est exercé sur moi (et par extension sur toute la société). Il s agit de la puissance et l impuissance, de l individu face au groupe. ( ) J ai même le sentiment que je veux évacuer des éléments de la vulgarité, que je veux revalider des choses qui sont considérées sans valeur. Revalider est un beau terme car il implique aller mieux, prendre des forces, mais contient aussi l idée de valider. 20 des objets, des boîtes ou des emballages abandonnés, rejetés, perdus et trouvés. ( ) ( ) Les placards ne sont certainement pas des objets anodins, des objets de charme. Au contraire même, c est une œuvre plutôt obscure et brutale dans son intégralité, dont les couches successives cachent une invitation à l éthique, à l élégance et à la dignité. Il y a une grande différence entre l infamie et la brutalité. Je considère la brutalité que j utilise (de manière pas très consciente d ailleurs) comme un outil pour charger mon œuvre et en augmenter l intensité. La quantité des placards en est une facette. Le caractère maniaque de cette masse non seulement dit quelque chose sur moi, le créateur, mais est tout autant une manière de placer des points d interrogation et d exclamation. ( ) VM ( ) Ta démarche à propos de l éthique me surprend. ( ) Tu associes l éthique à l élégance et la dignité et c est tout à ton honneur. Ce ruban adhésif a-t-il une valeur ajoutée? Tu as dis que les placards sont plutôt des dessins, et non des tableaux. ( ) F ( ) Comme je considère plutôt les placards comme des dessins que des tableaux, je veux non seulement souligner la vitesse et le suggestif, mais aussi placer en parallèle l informel et le formel. Le ruban adhésif est un bord, mais aussi un instrument pour réduire, isoler, cacher ou abriter. Le ruban sera encore recouvert d une couche de colle de reliure, d un vernis transparent - le sceau de l ordonnance - qui est en même temps une manière de saisir l instant, de le renforcer et de le conserver.
