7 Summaries of presentations: Stefan Binder: Non religious movements in South India: Critics of religion and affective revolutionaries This presentation gives an overview of my current PhD project on atheist, rationalist, and humanist movements in South India (Andhra Pradesh and Telangana) I will discuss the structure of my thesis and some related methodological issues concerning the study of secularity and non religion in general. I will use ethnographic material to highlight a particular genealogy of atheism in India as well as the interface of social imaginaries and affective economies within the atheist movement. Yme Horjus: De tucht als instrument van accountability in discipelschap binnen de kerk De tucht wordt in de kerkelijke wereld steeds minder uitgeoefend in weerwil tot de seculiere wereld waar de tucht een geducht instrument is om kwaliteit en integriteit te bewaken. Allerlei beroepsgroepen kennen tuchtcolleges en tuchtcommissies. Gele en rode kaarten binnen de voetballerij worden door de tuchtcommissie van de KNVB bestraft. In de kerkelijke wereld is grote terughoudendheid ontstaan door misbruik in het verleden. Deze misbruik heeft gezorgd voor onbruik. Maar ook gelovigen kunnen niet zonder accountability. Hoe kan deze weer op een gezonde manier binnen de kerken terugkeren? Albertina Oegema: Family Relations in Jewish and Christian Parables My PhD-project deals with the ways family relations have been depicted in parables in early Christian and early rabbinic (Jewish) literature from the first centuries CE. These parables are a certain kind of comparison stories in which elements from reallife situations have been used. In my presentation I would like to present and discuss the general set-up of my PhD-project, including its aims and interdisciplinary approach.

8 Matthias Mangold: The Tree of Life: Developing sacramental interpretations in Reformed Orthodoxy This paper consists in a historical inquiry into a neglected aspect of early modern Reformed dogmatics, namely the role of the tree of life in the pre-fall state of mankind. Having sketched the medieval and Reformation background of this issue, attention will be given to key discussions and developments in the course of the seventeenth century, particularly concerning the sacramental interpretation of this tree in the context of a prelapsarian covenant between God and man. Hans Meerveld: Wat nemen catechisanten mee van de catechese? Onderzoek in vier catechetische praktijken in protestantse kerken, waarin catechisanten van 16 jaar en ouder rapporteren over wat ze geleerd hebben van de catechese. Cees-Jan Smits: God was in Christus. Over het pro nobis in de godsleer en verzoeningsleer van Eberhard Jüngel Op welke wijze kan Christus sterven toen en daar de vergeving van de schuld van mensen hier en nu betekenen, gegeven hun morele autonomie? In mijn proefschrift zoek ik naar een antwoord op die vraag in het werk van Hans Joachim Iwand ( ) en Eberhard Jüngel (1934). Voor NOSTER beperk ik me tot Jüngel en diens interpretatie van het kruis als zelfidentificatie Gods. Ik zal betogen dat deze identificatie de structuur heeft van vergeving. Femke Siebesma-Mannens: Language Variation and the Hebrew of the Dead Sea Scrolls My study aims at expanding the knowledge of the much-debated nature of the Hebrew language in the Dead Sea Scrolls (DSS) by the computer-assisted analysis of the patterns the verb forms with its arguments. Thus linguistic variation will be studied both within the DSS and in comparison with other Classical Hebrew texts to determine the position of DSS Hebrew within the development of the Hebrew language.

9 Annemiek de Jonge: Missie en Gemeenschap Wanneer men nadenkt over kerk-zijn in deze tijd wordt vaak gesproken over missionaire gemeenschapsvorming. Het vormen van een gemeenschap wordt als essentieel gezien bij 'het-werkenaan-missie'. In veel gevallen grijpt men hiervoor terug op een uitspraak van Newbigin die zei: 'de gemeenschap is de hermeneutiek van het evangelie'. In dit onderzoek ben ik op zoek naar de voorwaarden waaronder christelijke gemeenschappen, hermeneutische gemeenschappen kunnen zijn op een manier die ook missionair effectief is. Nienke Fortuin: Embodied and encultured signification of death Abstract: This presentation will outline a theoretical framework for embodied and encultured signification, that will be applied to death. Central in this theoretical framework are the concepts of cultural affordance and cultural niche. We assume three cultural niches (structured sets of cultural affordances for interpreting death) from which people with a terminal disease can derive meaning: a traditional, modern and postmodern cultural niche. These niches will be described from a socio-historical and empirical perspective. Sung-Eun Yoo: John Chrysostom s Understanding of Faith and Justification in his Homilies on Romans Although there are many themes that John Chrysostom (350(?)- 407) dealt with in his 32 homilies on Romans, I want to focus on his understanding of faith and justficiation, since there are ongoing debates on them among the modern scholars. Because of our own contexts, it is hard to admit unconditionally Chrysostom s whole interpretation. However, for a better understanding of them, it will be meaningful to examine how he interpreted faith and justificiation in his days. Mirjam Hofman: Evangelische en gereformeerde protestanten in Nederland,

10 Hoe verhielden de evangelische beweging en gevestigde protestantse kerken in Nederland zich tot elkaar in de vooroorlogse periode? Welke grieven koesterden zij ten opzichte van elkaar? Op welke terreinen werkten zij eensgezind samen? Door de rol van geschiedbeelden en toekomstverwachtingen bij hun eigentijdse plaatsbepalingen onder de loep te nemen, probeer ik deze vragen te beantwoorden. De hernhutters, vrije evangelische gemeenten en de maranatha-beweging passeren de revue. Marijn Zwart: Het land Israël in joods en christelijk zelfverstaan in de tweede eeuw Dit onderzoek bestudeert welke rol het land Israël speelt bij het vormen van het zelfverstaan van joden en christenen in de tweede eeuw. Dit gebeurt door twee joodse en twee christelijke geschriften onder de loep te nemen en hun visies op joods en christelijk zelfverstaan uiteen te zetten, daar waar het het land Israël betreft. Deze presentatie zal de algemene opzet van het onderzoek uit de doeken doen. Ook zal het pogen een aspect van het nut ervan te laten zien. Dave Vliegenthart: Franklin Merrell Wollf: A reasoned flight beyond reason New Age religions often emphasize experience, at the expense of reason. James Webb even refers to them as a flight from reason. And yet, many New Age ideo-logies show considerable intellectual sophistication. How to explain this tension? Using the life and teaching of Franklin Merrell-Wolff ( ) as a typical example, I argue that an emerging (awareness) of proximate others during the first ( ) and second ( ) New Age led founders of new religious move-ments to develop their unique worldviews into reasoned flights beyond reason.

11 Martijn Stoutjesdijk: Slavernij in vroegrabbijnse en vroegchristelijke parabels Bij slavernij in de joodse en christelijke context denken we wellicht al snel aan de progressieve slavernij-wetgeving in de Torah, of aan uitspraken als die in Galaten 3 dat er in Christus geen onderscheid meer is tussen slaaf en vrije. In mijn PhDproject onderzoek ik dit positieve beeld van slavernij aan de hand van vroegrabbijnse en vroegchristelijke parabels. In mijn presentatie zal ik ingaan op de precieze opzet van mijn project, mijn methodologie én de bijzondere aard van de joodse slavernij. Suzanne Roggeveen: De verhoudingen tussen joden en moslims in Amsterdam Dit onderzoek gaat over de factoren die van invloed zijn op de relaties tussen moslims en joden. Voorbeelden van factoren zijn bijvoorbeeld: het conflict tussen Israël en Palestina, maar ook de bindende werking van verhalen rondom de sociale identiteiten van joden en moslims. De bevindingen worden geïnterpreteerd aan de hand van sociaal wetenschappelijke theorieën, zoals social identity theory of the theory of practice van de socioloog Pierre Bourdieu.
