2 Voorwoord Foreword Vandaag eren we de leden van het Korps Commandotroepen met de hoogste dapperheidsonderscheiding die Nederland kent, de Militaire Willems-Orde. Dat is een uitzonderlijke gebeurtenis. De lat ligt hoog bij de Nederlandse krijgsmacht. Wie dan een dapperheidsonderscheiding krijgt uitgereikt, heeft iets uitzonderlijks gepresteerd. Zijne Majesteit de Koning heeft deze onderscheiding toegekend voor de inzet van het Korps Commandotroepen in Afghanistan. In de periode van maart 2005 tot en met september 2010 heeft het Korps een belangrijk hoofdstuk geschreven in de Nederlandse krijgsgeschiedenis. Met kleine en zelfstandige eenheden brachten zij, niet zelden in diep vijandelijk gebied, grote veranderingen teweeg en stelden zij anderen in staat zich te concentreren op wederopbouw en ontwikkeling. Het Korps Commandotroepen heeft zich onderscheiden door uitstekende daden van moed, beleid en trouw. Elders in dit boekje wordt hier nader op ingegaan. Today we honour the members of the Commando Corps with the Netherlands highest award for bravery, the Military Order of William. This is a very special occasion. The Dutch armed forces set high standards, so those who receive an award for their bravery have done something exceptional. Today, His Majesty King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands will present the Military Order of William in recognition of the actions of the Commando Corps in Afghanistan. In the period from March 2005 to September 2010, the Commando Corps wrote an important chapter in Dutch military history. In small and independent units and often deep in enemy territory, they brought about great change and enabled others to concentrate on rebuilding and development. The Commando Corps has distinguished itself by exceptional acts of bravery, skill and loyalty. These acts are described in more detail later in this booklet. Today, you will bear witness to a ceremony prescribed by law. It is a ceremony that uses music, words and imagery to honour the exceptional actions of the Commando Corps. A ceremony that is worthy of the achievements of everyone who serves and has served the Corps. 3 Binnenhof: historische en symbolische grond The Binnenhof: historic ground with symbolic value De uitreiking van de Militaire Willems-Orde vindt plaats op historische en symbolische grond. De geschiedenis van het Binnenhof gaat terug tot op de Middeleeuwen toen graaf Floris IV grond kocht om een kasteel te bouwen. De bouw van dit kasteel werd uiteindelijk voltooid door de kleinzoon van Floris IV, graaf Floris V. Het kasteel bestond toen uit een woongebouw (het Rolgebouw) en een grote zaal (de Ridderzaal). Vanaf dat moment gold het kasteel als de residentie van de graven van Holland. The presentation of the Military Order of William will take place on historic ground that holds deep symbolic meaning for the Netherlands. The history of the Binnenhof goes back to the Middle Ages, when Floris IV, Count of Holland, purchased land to build a castle. The construction of the castle was completed by his grandson, Count Floris V of Holland. At the time, the castle comprised a mansion (the so-called Rolgebouw), and a large hall (the Ridderzaal or Knight s Hall). From that time on, the castle served as the residence of the counts of Holland. 4 5 In de loop van de eeuwen ontstond het Binnenhof zoals we dat nu vandaag de dag kennen. Centraal op het plein staat nog steeds de Ridderzaal waar Zijne Majesteit de Koning jaarlijks op de derde dinsdag van september het parlementaire jaar opent door het uitspreken van de Troonrede. In deze Troonrede maakt de regering haar plannen voor het komende jaar bekend. In de gebouwen aan het Binnenhof zijn de Eerste en de Tweede Kamer van de Staten-Generaal ondergebracht. Daarnaast zijn de kantoren van de Minister-President gevestigd in het zogenaamde Torentje. In de Trêveszaal vergadert het kabinet iedere vrijdag. Het Binnenhof bevindt zich dan ook letterlijk midden tussen de symbolen en vertegenwoordigers van onze democratische waarden en normen. The Binnenhof as we now know it was developed over the centuries. The Ridderzaal, which still stands in the heart of the inner court, is where the parliamentary year is officially opened on the third Tuesday of September by His Majesty King Willem Alexander with the King s Speech. In the Speech, the government unfolds its plans for the coming year. The complexes adjoining the Binnenhof accommodate the Senate and the House of Representatives of the States-General. Next to these buildings is the office of the Prime Minister, which is located in what is referred to in Dutch as the Torentje (turret). The Trêveszaal is where the Council of Ministers hold their weekly Friday meeting. The Binnenhof is therefore situated literally at the heart of the symbols and representatives of our democratic standards and values.

4 Aangetreden eenheden Mauritshuis Ridderzaal Bij de ceremonie op het Binnenhof staan diverse militaire eenheden aangetreden. Voor de Ridderzaal staat een collectieve vaandelwacht van alle eenheden aan wie in het verleden een Militaire Willems-Orde is toegekend. Delegaties van deze eenheden staan tegenover de tribune. Op de tribune bevinden zich de aanwezige Ridders Militaire Willems- Orde. Tegenover de Ridderzaal staan de Commandant der Strijdkrachten generaal Tom Middendorp, zijn operationele commandanten en andere vlag- en opperofficieren. Naast hen staan delegaties van de vier krijgsmachtdelen aangetreden. De Korpscommandant, kolonel Jelte Groen, treedt op als vaandel voerend commandant. Het vaandel van het Korps Commandotroepen wordt gedragen door de Korpsadjudant, Aart Groenendijk. De algehele leiding over de ceremonie berust bij luitenantkolonel Huub Smeets, plaatsvervangend commandant van het Korps Commandotroepen. De aangetreden eenheden onderscheiden met een Militaire Willems-Orde zijn: - Het Regiment Van Heutsz van de Koninklijke Landmacht dat de traditie voortzet van het Koninklijke Nederlands-Indisch Leger. In respectievelijk 1849, 1877 en 1930 werd aan drie eenheden van dit Koninklijk Nederlands-Indisch Leger de Militaire Willems-Orde toegekend; - De Koninklijke Luchtmacht die de traditie voortzet van zowel het Wapen der Militaire Luchtvaart als het Wapen der Militaire Luchtvaart van het Koninklijk Nederlands-Indisch Leger. Beide Wapens werd in 1940 en 1942 de Militaire Willems-Orde toegekend voor de inzet tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog; Koninklijke 6 Luchtmacht 7 Ridders Militaire Willems-Orde Muziekkorps Vaandelgroep Vaandelwacht KCT Korps Commandotroepen Regiment van Heutsz - De Marine Luchtvaartdienst van de Koninklijke Marine werd in 1942 onderscheiden met de Militaire Willems-Orde voor de inzet in de Tweede Wereldoorlog; - Het Garderegiment Fuseliers Prinses Irene van de Koninklijke Landmacht dat de traditie voortzet van de Koninklijke Nederlandse Brigade Prinses Irene. De Koninklijke Nederlandse Brigade Prinses Irene werd in juli 1945 onderscheiden met de Militaire Willems-Orde voor de inzet tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog; - De Amerikaanse 82nd Airborne Division werd in oktober 1945 geëerd voor haar rol in operatie Market Garden in 1944; Tribune Fontein Marine Luchtvaartdienst Garderegiment Fuseliers Prinses Irene 82nd (US) Airborne Div. Korps Mariniers Onderzeedienst - Het Korps Mariniers van de Koninklijke Marine kreeg de Militaire Willems-Orde in 1946 voor de inzet in de Tweede Wereldoorlog; 6e Poolse Air Assault Brig. - De Onderzeedienst van de Koninklijke Marine werd in 1947 onderscheiden met de Militaire Willems-Orde voor de inzet in de Tweede Wereldoorlog; Commandant der Strijdkrachten Koninklijke Marechaussee Koninklijke Luchtmacht Koninklijke Landmacht Koninklijke Marine - De Poolse 6e Air Assault Brigade die de traditie voortzet van de 1e Zelfstandige Poolse Parachutistenbrigade. 5 Military units on parade Mauritshuis Ridderzaal (Hall of Knights) Various military units are formed up at the Binnenhof during the ceremony. In front of the Ridderzaal is a Colour Guard formed by all units which have been awarded the Military Order of William in the past. Delegations of these units are positioned opposite the stand. The Knights of the Military Order of William are seated in the stand. Positioned opposite the Ridderzaal are the Chief of Defence, General Tom Middendorp, his Operational Commanders and other flag and general officers. Next to them are delegations from the four Services. The Commander of the Commando Corps, Colonel Jelte Groen, is also the guardian of the colour. The colour of the Commando Corps will be carried by the Senior Corps NCO, Aart Groenendijk. Lieutenant Colonel Huub Smeets, Deputy Commander of the Commando Corps, will act as the master of ceremonies. The units on parade which have previously been awarded the Military Order of William are: - The Van Heutsz Regiment of the Royal Netherlands Army, which continues the traditions of the Royal Netherlands East Indies Army. The Prinses Irene Royal Netherlands Brigade was awarded the Military Order of William in July 1945 for its actions during the Second World War; - The US 82nd Airborne Division, which was honoured in October 1945 for its role during Operation Market Garden in 1944; Stand Prinses Irene Fusilier Guards Regiment 82nd (US) Airborne Division Marine Corps - The Marine Corps of the Royal Netherlands Navy, awarded the Military Order of William IN 1946 for its actions during the Second World War; - The Submarine Service of the Royal Netherlands Navy, awarded the Military Order of William in 1947 for their deployment during the Second World War; Fountain Submarine Service 6th (Polish) Air Assault Brigade - The 6th Polish Air Assault Brigade, which continues the traditions of the 1st Independent Polish Parachute Brigade. Na het in ontvangst nemen van het traditionele eerbetoon met de volledige Mars van de Jonge Prins van Friesland inspecteert Z.M. de Koning de aangetreden eenheden en begroet aansluitend de Ridders der Militaire Willems-Orde. Na de inspectie zal de minister van Defensie, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, Z.M. de Koning en overige aanwezigen welkom heten en de ceremonie inleiden. De vaandelwacht van het Korps Commandotroepen zal uittreden en het vaandel overdragen aan de Korpscommandant. Hij neemt positie in front van Z.M. de Koning. Na een toespraak zal Z.M. de Koning overgaan tot het aanhechten van het versiersel van de Militaire Willems-Orde aan het vaandel. Het aanhechten van het versiersel wordt gevolgd door het Wilhelmus. De vaandelwacht zal aansluitend de Ridders Militaire Willems-Orde begroeten als nieuw toegetreden tot de Orde, met het eerbewijs in den arm geweer. Na de rondgang van de vaandelwacht wordt dat deel van de ceremonie afgesloten. Vervolgens nemen de vaandelwacht en het detachement van het Korps Commandotroepen positie in voor het defilé. De Ridders Militaire Willems-Orde en de Korpscommandant sluiten aan bij Z.M. de Koning, waarna ook het cortège van de Commandant der Strijdkrachten aansluit. 8 De Militaire Willems-Orde The Military Order of William De Militaire Willems-Orde is de oudste en tegelijk hoogste onderscheiding van het Koninkrijk der Nederlanden. Zij werd ingesteld bij de wet van 30 april 1815, no.5. Deze wet, die uit twaalf artikelen bestond, was van kracht tot 30 april 1940, toen zij met behoud van haar deugdelijk gebleken grondslagen werd herzien. Het eerste artikel luidt nu: 1. Er is een Orde, strekkende tot belooning van militairen, in dienst van het Koninkrijk der Nederlanden, die zich in den strijd door het bedrijven van uitstekende daden van moed, beleid en trouw hebben onderscheiden. 2. In bijzondere gevallen kunnen ook niet-militaire Nederlandse onderdanen alsmede vreemdelingen, die zich door zoodanige daden hebben onderscheiden in de Orde worden opgenomen Knights of the 1st Class, or Knights Grand Cross, De Militaire Willems-Orde bestaat uit vier klassen: - Knights of the 2nd Class, or Commanders, 15 - Ridders der 1e klasse of Ridders-Grootkruis, - Ridders der 2e klasse of Commandeurs, - Ridders der 3e klasse, - - Knights of the 3rd Class, Knights of the 4th Class. - Ridders der 4e klasse. A Knight of the Order who again distinguishes himself by an outstanding act of bravery, skill and loyalty may be considered for promotion within the Order. Een Ridder der Orde die opnieuw in de strijd een uitstekende daad van moed, beleid en trouw heeft verricht, kan voor bevordering in de Orde in aanmerking komen. De eerste die de eer ten deel viel in het register van de Orde te worden ingeschreven, was de Prins van Oranje de latere koning Willem II die in 1815 bij Quatre Bras en Waterloo de Nederlandse troepen had aangevoerd. In totaal vonden er naar aanleiding van deze twee veldslagen meer dan duizend benoemingen plaats. In de negentiende eeuw zouden nog talrijke benoemingen volgen. Zo leverde de Belgische Opstand in 1830 en de Tiendaagse Veldtocht, die een jaar later plaatsvond, een groot aantal nieuwe ridders op. Nederlands-Indië was bij uitstek het gebied waar men het ridderschap der Militaire Willems-Orde kon verdienen. Atjeh, waar vanaf 1873 een guerrillaoorlog werd gevoerd, spande in dit opzicht de kroon. De talloze militaire acties daar brachten in het tijdvak een oogst op van in totaal twee grootkruizen, zes commandeurskruizen, 42 ridderkruizen derde klasse en meer dan 800 ridderkruizen vierde klasse1. In totaal werden in de periode tot personen en eenheden met de Militaire Willems-Orde gedecoreerd. The Military Order of William is the oldest and the highest honour in the Kingdom of the Netherlands. It was established by Act of Parliament no. 5 on 30 April This Act, consisting of 12 sections, remained in force until 30 April 1940, when it was reviewed while retaining its proven sound foundations. The first section now reads: 1. There is an Order, which serves to reward military personnel in the service of the Kingdom of the Netherlands who have distinguished themselves in battle by acts of exceptional bravery, skill and loyalty. 2. In exceptional cases, Dutch nationals who are not in military service and non-dutch nationals, who have distinguished themselves by such acts, may be admitted into the Order. The Military Order of William comprises four classes: The first person to have the honour of being entered into the register of the Order was the Prince of Orange later to become King William II who had led the Dutch troops at Quatre Bras and Waterloo in A total of more than one thousand appointments were made as a result of these two battles. Many appointments were to follow during the course of the nineteenth century. For instance, the Belgian Revolution in 1830 and the Ten Days Campaign a year later produced a large number of new Knights. In the period that followed, the Netherlands East Indies was the area where soldiers were most likely to be awarded the Military Order of William. The region of Aceh, where a guerrilla war had been raging since 1873, topped the list. The countless military operations carried out there in the period from 1873 to 1927 yielded two Knights Grand Cross, six Commanders, 42 Knights of the 3rd Class and more than 800 Knights of the 4th Class1. In the period before 1940, a total of 5,866 people and units were awarded the Military Order of William.

9 Sinds 1940 zijn nog 208 personen en eenheden aan de registers van de Militaire Willems-Orde toegevoegd. Onder hen bevonden zich twee leden van het Koninklijk Huis, vanwege hun inspirerend leiderschap tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Prins Bernard werd op 15 juni 1946 tot Commandeur benoemd en prinses Wilhelmina op 4 september 1948 tot Ridder-Grootkruis. Zij was de eerste vrouw die in de registers van de Orde werd ingeschreven. Since 1940, another 200 names and unit names have been added to the register of the Military Order of William. Among them are two members of the Royal House. Het Regiment van Heutsz zet de tradities voort van het Koninklijk Nederlands-Indisch Leger (KNIL) en voert aan haar vaandel het ridderkruis 4e klasse op een rozet naar traditie van het KNIL. De Koninklijke Luchtmacht doet dit voor het Wapen der Militaire Luchtvaart (1940) en het Wapen der Militaire Luchtvaart van het distinguished themselves in battle to be awarded the Knight s Cross of the 4th Class. Similarly, the traditions of the disbanded 1st Independent Polish Parachute Brigade, awarded the Military Order of William in 2006, are being 16 KNIL (1942). 10 De Militaire Willems-Orde The Military Order of William Grootmeesterschap Grand Master Voor iedere Nederlandse ridderorde is bij de instelling bepaald dat het grootmeesterschap onlosmakelijk aan de Kroon der Nederlanden is verbonden. De koning is dus de Grootmeester van de Militaire Willems-Orde. De Grootmeester draagt de versierselen van Ridder-Grootkruis. Dit is het ordelint en écharpe (als sjerp) van de rechterschouder naar de linkerheup, eindigend in een strik waaraan het ordeteken is bevestigd. Links, beneden de borst en boven het middel, een achtpuntige ordester (plaque) met daarop het versiersel zonder kroon. Indien de koning is gekleed in militair uniform draagt hij bij passende gelegenheden (bijvoorbeeld de Nederlandse Veteranendag of herdenkingen) een aangepaste versie van het versiersel. Dit bestaat uit het ridderkruis 3e klasse opgemaakt met gouden barrette (galon) en rozet. Deze toevoeging duidt de graad van Ridder-Grootkruis aan. Dit geldt ook voor de opmaak van de grootkruizen van de andere Nederlandse orden. De opgemaakte versierselen maken deel uit van de spang modeldecoraties (decoratiegesp). Indien het versiersel van de Militaire Willems-Orde op deze wijze wordt gedragen, vervallen het ordelint en de plaque. Majoor Gijs Tuinman trad toe tot de Orde wegens zijn inzet in Afghanistan. Als commandant meervoudig ploegoptreden bij het Korps Commandotroepen gaf toenmalig kapitein Tuinman in 2009 leiding aan speciale operaties in de Taliban-bolwerken in Zuid-Afghanistan. Hij opereerde daarbij meermaals tactisch vernieuwend en flexibel. Na het sneuvelen van een collega gaf hij op doortastende wijze invulling aan het motto Never leave a man behind. 12 Korps Commandotroepen Het Korps Commandotroepen is de elite-eenheid van de Koninklijke Landmacht. Commando s voeren in kleine, zelfstandige ploegen speciale operaties uit in vijandelijk gebied. Ook verlenen ze steun aan bondgenoten en eenheden van landmacht, luchtmacht en marine. Speciale operaties vallen uiteen in 3 hoofdtaken: 1. Militaire bijstand Buitenlandse veiligheidstroepen assisteren met opleidingen, trainingen en advies. Ook kunnen commando s samen met deze opgeleide eenheden operaties uitvoeren. Communicatie De communicatiespecialist is de technische man van de ploeg. Met behulp van radio, tactische satellietapparatuur en andere middelen legt hij over grote afstanden contact met het hoofdkwartier. Sniper De sniper kan doelen ongezien naderen, in kaart brengen of uitschakelen. Hij is gespecialiseerd in camoufleren, observeren en schieten. Met zijn speciale wapens en richtmiddelen kan hij een doel tot op meter afstand uitschakelen. 2. Speciale verkenningen Gezien en ongezien inlichtingen verzamelen. De ploeg vertrouwt in het inzetgebied op de medic voor medische zorg in brede zin Inzetspecialisaties De operationele commandotroepencompagnieën beschikken behalve over de reguliere ploegen ook over teams voor bijzondere inzetten. Specialisaties Commandoploegen moeten gedurende langere tijd zelfstandig kunnen optreden achter de linies, zonder directe steun van buitenaf. Daarom krijgt elke commando tijdens zijn fysiek en mentaal zware commando-opleiding ook een eigen specialisatie. Iedere ploeg telt 4 specialismen. Demolitie De demolitiespecialist is de ploegdeskundige op het gebied van explosieven. Hij zet springstoffen in om objecten te vernietigen. Maar ook om gericht en zonder nevenschade toegang tot gebouwen te forceren. Geïmproviseerde explosieven kan hij ontdekken en onschadelijk maken. Paraploegen Iedere KCT-ploeg is inzetbaar per parachute. Daarnaast telt het KCT ook speciale vrijevalploegen die vanaf grote hoogtes kunnen worden ingezet. Zo kunnen ze een gebied ongezien binnendringen. Deze parachutisten kunnen met speciale zuurstofapparatuur springen tot op maximaal 10 kilometer hoogte. Er zijn 2 soorten sprongen: high altitude high opening (HAHO) en high altitude low opening (HALO). Bergploegen Voor optredens in bergachtig terrein heeft het KCT specialistisch opgeleide teams. Met hun klimapparatuur en klimopleidingen kunnen ze alle vormen van speciale operaties uitvoeren in Alpine terrein. Ook kunnen ze andere eenheden assisteren in hun bergoptredens.

13 Korps Commandotroepen Commando Corps Waterploegen De rivieren en binnenwateren zijn het domein van de waterploegen. Ze maken gebruik van verschillende vaartuigen. Sommige hiervan kunnen ook samen met de ploeg vanuit de lucht worden afgeworpen. Ook kunnen de waterploegen zich met hun specialistische duikapparatuur ongezien onder water verplaatsen. De commando s opereerden in drie verschillende Taskforces met elk een eigen mandaat. Op 12 mei 2005 meldt de commandant zijn Special Forces Taskgroup (SFTG), gestationeerd op Kandahar Airfield, gereed voor inzet. De Taskforce zal helpen in de jacht op Talibanstrijders en Al-Qaida terroristen. Daarmee begint de inzet van het Korps Commandotroepen in Zuid-Afghanistan die uiteindelijk vijf jaar zal duren. Het is een bijzonder moment. Voor het eerst in de geschiedenis wordt een formatie in het model van een Special Operations Taskgroup uitgezonden. Dat houdt in dat een Commandotroepencompagnie zelfstandig operaties gaat uitvoeren. Ondersteunende eenheden zoals helikopters, logistiek, genie, Explosieven Opruimingsdienst etcetera worden om de commando s heen gegroepeerd. 16 Taskforce Orange Task Force Orange Uit de verkenningen van TF Orange bleek dat er weinig vijandelijke activitiet was in het zuiden van Kandahar. Door de afwezigheid van vijandelijke strijders kwamen de commando s maar beperkt in conflictsituaties terecht. Maar TF Orange gaf het KCT de mogelijkheid om uitgebreid ervaring op te doen. Niet alleen met het opereren als Special Operations Taskgroup maar ook met het land Afghanistan en haar inwoners. De hitte, het terrein en de complexe stammenstructuur. Allemaal waardevolle lessen die van pas zouden komen tijdens de intensievere operaties in de jaren daarna. Na maart krijgt TF Orange een andere taak toebedeeld en richten de commando s hun vizier op de provincie Uruzgan. Nederland heeft besloten om zich onder ISAF-vlag te committeren aan de provincie Uruzgan en de Canadezen nemen de verantwoordelijk voor Windmill over. De NAVO-geleide ISAF missie heeft tot doel te assisteren bij de wederopbouw van Afghanistan. TF Orange speelt een belangrijke rol bij de eerste verkenningen in de nieuwe provincie. In Uruzgan begint het KCT aan een nieuw hoofdstuk. De commando s zullen een cruciale rol spelen in het verkrijgen van bewegingsvrijheid voor ISAF-troepen in de roerige provincie. TF Orange wordt TF Viper. The reconnaissance operations of TF Orange revealed little enemy activity in the south of Kandahar. 18 TF Viper 22 april 2006 Een peloton van Taskforce Viper nadert het dorp Surkh Murgab in de Chora-vallei. Doel: het in kaart brengen van de tegenstand in het dorp. Hoe dichter de commando s bij het oord komen, hoe meer de vijandelijke activiteiten toenemen. Het duurt dan ook niet lang voordat de commando s worden aangevallen. De tegenstand is fel en goed georganiseerd. Van alle kanten wordt het peloton onder vuur genomen. Er ontstaat een vuurgevecht dat zo hevig is, dat luchtsteun nodig is om te kunnen blijven manoeuvreren. Uiteindelijk schakelen twee 500-ponders het zwaartepunt van de Talibanstrijders uit. Surkh Murgab ligt maar 15 kilometer van Kamp Holland. De actie is exemplarisch voor het optreden van TF Viper: in dienst van Taskforce Uruzgan (TFU) de provincie in kaart brengen. Verkennen en waar mogelijk de vijand ontwrichten is daarbij het devies. In pelotons van ongeveer 30 man sterk worden de commando s erop uitgestuurd om te achterhalen waar de vijand zich ophoudt en, als het even kan, uit te schakelen. De wijze van optreden past in de inktvlekstrategie van de TFU. Het KCT wordt ingezet aan de buitenranden van deze inktvlek. Gebied dat de Taliban niet snel op zal geven en waarvoor ze bereid zijn hard te vechten. Vanuit hoofdstad Tarin Kowt moet de provincie stap voor stap veilig gemaakt worden, anders kan wederopbouw niet starten. En die inktvlek is dus behoorlijk klein in het begin. Het is een manier van optreden waar de KCT ers bij uitstek voor zijn opgeleid. Als eerste met hun MB-terreinwagens een gebied ingaan totdat ze op tegenstand stuitten, deze uitschakelen en weer doorgaan. Met de terreinwagens kunnen de commando s weliswaar snel verplaatsen maar ze bieden weinig bescherming. Maximale omgevingsbewustzijn is dan ook cruciaal voor de eigen veiligheid. Meerdaagse verkenningen door onherbergzaam gebied met weinig directe steun zijn aan de orde van de dag voor TF Viper. Het brengt de commando s vele malen in gevaarlijke situaties en in talloze TIC s (Troops in Contact) met de Taliban. Bij een van mijn eerste acties in Afghanistan raakten we volledig omsingeld, vertelt een commando later. Welkom in Uruzgan, dacht ik. We hebben hier te maken met een serieuze vijand. De Taliban zijn lui die er volledig voor gaan. TF Viper A Task Force Viper platoon approaches the village of Surkh Murgab, in the Chora Valley. Eventually, two 500-pound bombs take out the Taliban forces point of main effort. Surkh Murgab is only 15 kilometres away from Camp Holland. This is a prime example of the operations conducted by TF Viper: mapping the province for Task Force Uruzgan (TFU). Their motto: to reconnoitre and disrupt the enemy where possible. In platoons of roughly 30 men, the commandos were sent out to discover where the enemy was based and, if at all possible, to negate the threat. Their method of operation corresponded with the TFU s ink spot strategy. The Commando Corps was deployed at the outer limits of this ink spot. Areas the Taliban were unlikely to surrender easily and for which they were willing to fight hard. Starting from the capital Tarin Kowt, the province needed to be secured step by step in order to allow reconstruction to start. And that ink blot was quite small to begin with. This is a method of operation commandos have been trained for. They are the first to enter an area with their 4x4 soft tops, until they hit resistance, which they eliminate before moving forward. Although terrain vehicles allow the commandos to move quickly, they do not offer much protection. 19 TF Viper TF Viper De Taliban beperkt zich niet alleen tot de verdediging. In juni 2006 overrompelen zij de Afghaanse politietroepen die het bestuurscentrum van het district Chora verdedigen. Er lijkt sprake van een groot offensief met de duidelijke intentie om de macht in het district te grijpen en te houden, en wellicht ook om het veroverde gebied als springplank te gebruiken voor een aanval op de provinciehoofdstad Tarin Kowt. Multiple-day reconnaissance missions through rough terrain, with little direct support, were the order of the day for TF Viper. It regularly led the commandos into dangerous situations and countless TICs (troops in contact) with the Taliban. Het blijkt dat 300 goed getrainde Talibanstrijders zich ophouden in de Chora vallei. Een peloton van TF Viper treedt op, samen met Australische collega s. Aan het begin van de Baluchivallei raken de coalitietroepen slaags met de Taliban. Het regent mortieren en raketgranaten op de stellingen van de commando s. 36 Talibanstrijders naderen de Nederlandse commando s tot op korte afstand en er ontspint zich een vuurgevecht waarbij alle mogelijke middelen werden ingezet. De commando s moeten zich terug laten vallen. De Taliban weet niet van opgeven en zet een zware aanval in op het Nederlandse en het Australische peloton. Via een omtrekkende beweging komen ze terecht op de hoge linkerflank van het Nederlandse peloton. Een Australische commando raakt zwaargewond en moet geëvacueerd worden. Om dat mogelijk te maken, moeten de Nederlanders koste wat het kost de Taliban tegenhouden. De Nederlandse commando s dringen de vijand vechtend terug en stellen zo de Australiërs in staat om hun gewonde collega af te voeren. In one of my first actions in Afghanistan, we became completely surrounded, a commando recounted later. Welcome to Uruzgan, I thought. We re dealing with a serious enemy here. The Taliban are the kind of fighters who really go for it. The Taliban did not limit themselves to defensive measures. In June 2006, they caught the Afghan police troops defending Chora s administrative centre off guard. It appeared to be a major offensive with the clear intention of gaining and maintaining control over the district and possibly using the captured area as a springboard for an attack on the provincial, capital Tarin Kowt. 300 well-trained Taliban fighters turned out to be based in the Chora Valley. A TF Viper platoon sprang into action, together with Australian colleagues. At the beginning of the Baluchi Valley, coalition troops engaged with the Taliban. Mortars and rocketpropelled grenades rained down upon the commando positions. Taliban fighters approached the Dutch commandos until just a short distance away and a firefight ensued in which all possible means were deployed. The commandos were forced to retreat. The Taliban would not give in and launched a major attack on the Dutch and Australian platoon. A flanking movement allowed them to reach the high left flank of the Dutch platoon. An Australian commando was seriously injured and had to be evacuated. To enable this, the Dutch troops had to hold the Taliban back at all costs. 37

20 TF Viper TF Viper Hierna breken ook de Nederlanders het gevecht af en trekken ze zich terug. Tijdens het urenlange gevecht verschieten de Nederlanders duizenden patronen. Het lange gevecht vergt veel van de manschappen maar ze blijven scherp. Ze houden je niet voor niets zolang wakker tijdens de opleiding, vertelt een Afghanistanveteraan in Ik heb het nut ervan gemerkt tijdens de langdurige gevechten, die ook s nachts plaatsvonden. Je blijft alert. In totaal levert TF Viper, van maart 2006 tot en met december 2007, 80 vuurgevechten met de Taliban in 117 operaties. Gezien het aantal gevechten en de hevigheid daarvan, is het bijzonder dat er weinig verliezen zijn. Commando s zelf wijten dat voor een groot deel aan de zeer strenge selectie en de gedegen opleiding bij het korps. Bij Viper-2 werd ik op het laatste moment aangewezen als ploegcommandant, aldus kapitein Arthur. Een aantal mannen kende ik daarom amper. In total, TF Viper undertook 80 firefights with the Taliban in 117 operations, from March 2006 to December Considering the number and intensity of the fighting, it is remarkable how few losses were suffered. The commandos themselves believe this is due to the Corps very strict selection process and the thorough training they undergo. In Viper-2, I was appointed as a team commander at the last minute, recalls Captain Arthur. A few of the men I hardly knew. They came straight from training but fitted in perfectly. Omsingeling dreigt en dus rest pelotonscommandant luitenant Marco Kroon niets anders dan de hulp in te roepen van een AC-130 gunship. De afstand tussen de strijders en de special forces is maar een steenworp en het gevaar eigen troepen te raken is dus bijzonder groot. Kroon weet echter met zijn Forward Air Controller het vliegtuig naar de juiste doelen te dirigeren, waarbij de scherven hen letterlijk om de oren vliegen. Het is een van de acties waarvoor luitenant Marco Kroon de Militaire Willems-Orde ontvangt. In totaal krijgen 12 commando s een dapperheidsonderscheiding voor hun inzet tijdens Viper. De 117 operaties die Viper uitvoert, dringen de Taliban terug uit de belangrijkste bevolkingscentra en zorgen ervoor dat de TFU voet aan de grond krijgt in de provincie. Met name in het begin voert Viper vaak zijn operaties uit zonder externe steun, zoals search-capaciteit van de genie of een quick reaction force van de TFU. Voor het Korps zelf zorgen de ervaringen van Viper voor een schat aan geleerde lessen die tijdens de commando-opleiding gelijk worden overgebracht aan nieuwe lichtingen commando s. Daarnaast leveren de ervaringen van Viper een solide basis voor de laatste Nederlandse special forces-missie in Afghanistan, TF 55. Sometimes though, you need a bit of luck. This was shown when a Viper platoon on foot encountered a contingency of Taliban fighters. The enemy was so large in number that the commandos literally had to fight for their lives. They risked being surrounded, leaving platoon commander Lieutenant Marco Kroon no other option than to call in the assistance of an AC-130 gunship. The distance between the Taliban fighters and the Special Forces was no more than a stone s throw and the risk of friendly fire was exceptionally high. With his Forward Air Controller, Kroon nonetheless managed to direct the aircraft to the correct targets, with shrapnel literally flying all around them. This is one of the actions for which Lieutenant Marco Kroon received the Military Order of William. A total of 12 commandos are to receive an award for gallantry for their contribution to Viper. The 117 operations carried out by Viper forced the Taliban out of the main population centres and allowed the TFU to gain a foothold in the province. Particularly in the beginning, Viper often carried out operations without external back up, such as the engineers search capabilities or a TFU quick reaction force. 38 For the Corps itself, the experiences from Viper have given them a wide array of lessons learned. These will be directly taught to new classes of commandos during Commando 39 training. The experiences drawn from Viper also formed a solid foundation for the last Dutch special forces mission in Afghanistan, TF 55.
