Rehabilitation Psychology, 43(2), Bron van informatie over dit instrument Bolton & Brookings (1998) Achtergrond Dit instrument is volgens de auteurs gebaseerd op Zimmermans conceptualisatie van psychologische empowerment als een begrip met drie componenten: intrapersoonlijk, interactioneel en gedragsmatig. Het instrument is gericht op de intrapersoonlijke component, waaronder Bolton & Brookings verstaan: intrapsychische processen zoals waargenomen controle, waargenomen competentie, eigen effectiviteit en gemeenschapszin. Op basis van literatuur over empowerment bij mensen met een handicap kwamen de auteurs tot een lijst van 20 relevante kenmerken. Voor elk van deze kenmerken werden 25 items opgesteld, in totaal 500 items. Hieruit werden vervolgens 240 items geselecteerd die het meest relevant waren en het minst overlappend of onduidelijk. De lijst met 240 items werd empirisch onderzocht bij een steekproef van 156 mensen met een handicap. Op basis van o.a. factoranalyse kwam de uiteindelijke lijst van 64 items tot stand.
